The Phillies beat the Mets on Tuesday night, easy win, easy win, nine to three. They now have a nine game lead over the Mets in the National League Eest, which is seventeen games to play. The magic number is nine, guys. If the Phillies go just eight and nine, the rest of the way to finish ninety three and sixty nine, the Mets would need to go seventeen to oher is to finish with a first place tie. We've got more on the NL East Race. We've got a new Shive vintage sports giveaway, but let's start with Kyle Schwarber's milestone home run on Tuesday night. It's time for the Park's First Pitch. Speaker 4: I agree it was perfect. It was very fitting because his evolution as a hitter. He's become a better hitter the last couple of years right before our eyes, and part of that is his commitment to using the middle of the field. So I thought it was fitting that it jetted out of the ballpark to the middle of the field. He absolutely crushed it, and he clearly had been pressing to get it done after that for homer game even talked about a little bit after the game, but this is one where he can exhale now and you know, get his swing right and get it in order and make final push for that MVP. See if you can get that. But more importantly, it's all about October and going to October with that swing in good shape and his eyes working and his hands working, because it's the whole package with a hitter. But hats off to Kyle. What a remarkable year, and the manager gave him a nice toast, and he should give the manager a nice toast too, you know, because hitting in front of Bryce Harper this year, with that construction of the lineup, I think has.

Speaker 2: They've got to bring him back. They want to bring him back John Milton. As Jim said many times, he listens to his fans. He understands his fan base, customers, customers, this customer. Yeah, absolutely, he listens to his customers, and he's got to bring it back. So my question, you guys, is seventeen games to go. He needs eight home runs in the final seventeen games to tie Ryan Howard. Now it's gonna be tough to do, there's no doubt. I mean, eight home runs in seventeen games is a hell of a run. But in his career he has hit fifteen homers a career high fifteen homers in a seventeen game stretch before, and he has hit as many as ten homers in a seventeen game stretch this season. So he's capable of these runs as we know. As we know, do we think he can get to Ryan Howard?

Speaker 4: Do I think he can? Yes, I think he can do. I think he will. I think it's going to be very tough unless he drops a four spot on you one night, which we know he's capable of doing. You know, I wonder if Raef Rob's gonna get a couple of his starters off their feet, you know, once they clinched. I would imagine he would, But maybe he'll play him right through because they are you know, That's why it's important to get that buye. Maybe the rest comes in those few by days. But if Kyle Schwarber is going to do that, he needs to be in the lineup, probably every night. It would be a great thing if hopefully, you know, Schwarber's not making it his be all and end all, and I don't think he is, because I don't think you should try to hit home runs. I think that can mess up things for you. They happen like last night's home run happened. He squared it up and he's big, strong man, So I don't know if he'll get there. I tend to doubt it, but this has been a remarkable, great season for him.

Does this guy remind you of it a little bit? I think Howard was such a young player at the time in some ways maybe it was more captivating. Yeah, but this is pretty special. I was watching that game with some friends last night, and everybody knew that he was on the threshold of fifty and every avad is this, it is this it, and then yet boom, that was it. I mean, but it does feel a little bit different. And Ryan's chased down of fifty you.

Yeah, like you said, because Howard won Rookie of the Year of the year before and then that You're like, oh my gosh, is this guy going to be one of the greatest home run hitters of all time in baseball history. I remember one game where he got intentionally walked. The Reds like intentionally walked him once to load the bases to put the winning run on third base because they didn't want to face you know, he was all sorts. Managers were doing all sorts of crazy things to Ryan Howard, like they were so scared to death of that guy the final two months of the season. But I mean, Schwarbert demands that same type of respect a little different with Harper behind him.

I know the starting pitching is has been hit hard by Zach Wheeler, but by Zach Wheeler's loss, but there's still pretty darn good, especially if if Nola can step forward like he did in his last start, you know, and the fact that they've actually organized.

He deemphasizes the cutter because he had trouble with it in his previous starts, and then decides, Hum and JT throw one and it gets Sodo. Aaronola was really really good. Six six sharp innings. Ranger with six great innings on Tuesdays. I guess I was a little selfish. I'd love to see him get to seven if that pitch con was a little different. He gets to seven, and now I think that changes the complexity of the bullpen. But who's the quibble. I mean, twelve strikeouts absolutely surgical with this location of his of his fastball and his sinker. Just had a great night.

Speaker 2: Well, that that, to me is such an interesting question because you have Wheeler locked up obviously making forty plus million a year for the next couple of years. You don't know what he's going to be like, you have five more years of Aaron Nola and this last start super encouraging. Now you're sitting there going, wow, if you can finish strong? Does he start in the Division series? Does he knock Jesus Lozardo? You know, do you punt punt him to move him to the NLC? A lot of interesting questions, But man, you make a long term commitment, and it would and it would take a long term commitment. It's I don't believe you're gonna be able to sign Ranger Suarez to a even if you bump the AAV up to whatever, a two year deal, a three year deal. I think he's gonna try to get more than that. I think Scott Boris is going to try to get more than that. Right, So, I don't know. I don't know, even if there's interest, if they're gonna be able to go as far as they want to go. I don't think so.

So I think what's gonna happen is he's not gonna get that deal. He he's going to sign a pillow contract with the Philadelphia Phillies for a number that starts with either a high three or.

Stroms on the mound run around base, Sotos have to play and Bryson Stott makes that diving defensive play going to his gloves side to you know, take away base hit, and that inning snuff it out. You know, we focused so much on pitching and offense, but defense is crucial and that was that was a game turner for me. That you know that Bryson stop play. You remember that play.

I'm really happy for this guy because there was some question about whether or not he'd even be tender to contract, becoming an arbitration a number that's pretty high for the for the man in his third or fourth year in the big league. But he's turned it on. I love it because I like this player. I love his instinct like the way he goes about it, and I hope he's he's in that keystone spot for a long time.

And then they but the Phillies also plays Alec Bohm on the injured list. Maybe I'm crazy, but I thought the Trey Turner news was about as good as you could have possibly imagined. You know, they said grade one, MRI said grade one. They're talking about him maybe possibly being back before the end of the regular season. If it happens, great, if it doesn't, they seem to think that he's gonna be back for sure by the postseason. That's why this first round by is important because the first round the NL Wildcard Series. The Phillies right now have a four game lead over the Dodgers. Next week's series against the Dodgers is important for that reason. But the Crande Jim Barry Grande. The the NL Wildcard Series begins Tuesday, September thirty, and that's two days after the final game of the regular season. The NLDS, which you would play in the if you get the first round by, is Saturday, October fourth, So you give yourselves five x five full extra days to rest if the Phillies get that first round by. But you guys have any thoughts on Turner's injury, Alec Bohm's injury, all things considered, do you feel blessed the Phillies feel blessed? I should say I'm yeah.

He's not gonna be playing major league baseball for two or three weeks, and that's a big deal to get him back into rhythm and be at that a top of the lineup with the timing and all the things that are necessary. So that concerns me some. I know he's been around a long time. I know he can get back into it quickly, but that concerns me. And the fact that you know he's gonna have to use his legs to range, to play the.

So maybe the fact that it's a Grade one well make him feel more comfortable running at top speed if he needs to run at top speed go from first to third or you know, leg out an infield hits. So we'll find out about that and Alec Bolm should be back shortly or you know, after the ten days is up, which also is important. As part of this, we're gonna do a this Week in Phillies base This Week in Philly Baseball History, and this week we're highlighting the Philadelphia Negro League. Specifically, it's the one hundredth anniversary of the Hilldale Daisies Negro League championship in nineteen twenty five. Actually, the Phillies are honoring the Hilldale Daisies on Friday night. I think you can buy is it Friday Night? You can buy a themeed ticket to the ballpark as part of the promotion, and you can get a T shirt, a Hilldale t shirt. So kind of cool, kind of cool. As I think most fans are familiar with the Philadelphia Stars, they've had some of the old Philadelphia Stars at the ballpark for years and years and years. So that's funny.

Speaker 4: Cool if like Eagles fans are going to Kansas City this weekend, like a lot of Philadelphians are going to Kansas City. You're looking for something great to do, go to the Negro League's Museum. It's in Kansas City. It's right by downtown. I went there a few years ago with a few Phillies, including Andrew McCutcheon. They hosted Andrew McCutcheon and we had a great tour of the place. A gentleman named Bob Kendrick as the president of it. He gave us a great tour, and he mentioned the Hilldale Daisies a lot. And he also mentioned that Pennsylvania was a hotbed.

Speaker 4: Negro League baseball teams all over the state, obviously the Crawfords in Pittsburgh and then the Stars and the Hilldale Daisies. And but it is such a worthwhile place. I mean, you could go out to Kansas City this weekend, chug beer and eat ribs. It's a good city to do that. But use your mind and your soul and go to the Negro Leagues Museum and you will not regret it. It's a great way to spend an afternoon.

And I'm sure it was a cool moment for you for a lot of reasons, but partly because Aaron Nola pitched in that game, who you helped draft and Zach Eflin close that game. As I recall, right who you.

And one year they were having this horrible year, and and I remember writing that, you know, he provided the he broke wind and provided the perfect soundtrack for this odious season. And but so many funny things happened during in the clubhouse that you just you can't, you know, you just kind of.

Speaker 4: But yeah, a lot of h the one I remember really happened to like I used to do like a pregame hit on TV when I was at NBC and Tom McCarthy would try to break my concentration every night, and he would often, you know, I'm not the tallest guy on the planet. He would often yell, you know, open the door and yell, Jimmy, stand up. Well, one night he he opens the door and he walks in with a step ladder. As I'm on live TV. He walks in with a step ladder, and he's like, you know, and I don't know how I kept it together that night, but I did.

One time, Shane Victorino grabbed a garbage can. He was kind of holding it up and gesticulating with it, and I lost I totally lost all concentration, and I went up to him afterwards and I basically yelled at him. I said, don't do that again.

Speaker 2: And then another time, Chase and Ryan Howard were doing a photo shoot or maybe it was I think it was chasing Ryan Howard. It's definitely Chase, and they started like provided some antics behind the camera while I was doing my hit as well, and I also lost my concentration. Especially it was more mostly because Chase, you know, he has no Chase as a player. He was all buttoned up in all business all the time, but he was actually messing around when you saw I was doing a live hit, and I also lost my concentration, so I was like, can you please please stop. I'm not that good at this. I'm not that I can't. I need to focus. I need to focus.
