Spurg Pirates, it's for pirates are in on Kyle Schwarber. ESPN's Jeff Passon, who is one of the best in the business. Through that nugget out there and it's big long off season preview column. And I've been getting a lot of questions, a lot of questions about Kyle Schwarber. To the Pirates, and what is your reaction to Kyle Schwarber and the Pirates. Jim, I recall, well, you go, Jim, I'm gonna I'll see if you mentioned he.

I remember when the Mets signed Tim Tebow to a minor league contract and the Mets came out and I get I guess why they I understand why they said they when we think this guy can make the big league one day and Jim You went on NBC Sports Philadelphi until Michael Barkan, If Tim Deebow makes the big leagues, I will eat my shoe. And that's exactly what I thought when this report service that the Pirates are interested in Kyle Schwarburn might make a run at him. So I don't I don't see it happening. I don't see it happening. So apparently the Pirates have about they're going to spend maybe thirty to forty million dollars more in payroll this year. That only gets them up to like maybe a little over one hundred million dollars. Kyle Schwarber wants to win, no doubt.

Speaker 2: The Pittsburgh the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Tampa Bay Rays, there's the Miami Marlins. Those teams that have not paid anything in their payroll are getting a ton of heat from the rest of the owners to lift up their payrolls. They know that if they have any chance, any chance at all, over these next couple of years, during the court or this next year to get an actual cap any chance that a floor will have to be implemented. And the fact that these teams are so low in their payroll is embarrassingly low. They're making money, they're in the black. Some other teams, as we've seen already that our larger market teams are in the red operating wise. And so I mean this is a fight between ownership.

Kylis Schwarber wants to win a World Series, he wants to win two World Series, he wants to win three World Series. So I think the money has to be there, but he also has to go to a place that he feels like, you know, they're going to continue to do everything they can.

Speaker 2: That also and when you look at the teams that are going to be interested in him, the Cincinnati Reds is one that actually is realistic because they're close. They're they're pretty darn close. They've got good young players, They've got a hell of a pitch young pitching staff. As far as their rotation is concerned. That bullpen needs a little work, I think. But I mean you're talking about you know, you're talking about teams that are gonna be contenders, and Cincinnati, Boston, Boston, those are the teams that are in on them. At the end of the day, I still think there's a seventy five to eighty five percent chance that Kyle Schuver is.

Speaker 1: Jim will be eating his shoe. So stand by for that. So on one big move, one big free agent fell off the board this week. It was Josh Snailor goes to the Mariners five years, ninety two and a half million dollars. What do you guys think that does to the market or.

Speaker 2: I think it's a good thing for the market, for the Phillies as far as Schoorber is concerned, this guy had a really good season. He was super important to them as far as you know down the stretch and what he meant to their team. Left handed, power bat, you know, first base DH you can't minimize like some of the similarities. He's much much younger now physically, you know, does that play because he's a little he's a bigger guy. He's always sort of managed his weight. But one of the things that you know, one of the things that Kyle Schwarber has done really really well is put himself in a position physically to be able to perform, and dhing helps him do that. But I think the numbers themselves just what is it, like a nineteen million dollar AAV right around that number, just under twenty, I think that is a I think it bodes well for the Phillies guy. I still think it's going to be a five times thirty number and that helps put that in the right spot.

Just the way things roll these days, you kind of give guys that extra year and I hope you can get four good ones then you're happy with the deal. Naylor had a hell of a run in Seattle. It was good to see them go out and be aggressive and bring him back. He's important piece. The thing that sticks out for me about Josh Naylor is the first well I remember hearing that name in the draft. He was a really good prospect coming out of the Toronto area. But the Phillies do you remember when Oh, I remember.

But but the bat was special, and uh what he was like a mid round draft, wasn't he. I think he was right around fifteenth or nineteenth or something like that. I believe maybe higher. But damn good prospect man and made himself a made himself a very very good offensive player, and he moves well for a big man at first base.

I think they ended up moving him to Baltimore, but there was a chance he was going to go to Miami, and Josh Naylor was like this a ball player and he was the guy that might come back. That was what I was hearing when I was keeping my eye on and it just never happened. So he's a guy that I've always kind of watched a little bit for that reason.

Speaker 1: So earlier this week was the couple things happened earlier this week. The players said that were that received qualifying offers had to accept or reject them. As expected, Kyle Schwarber and Rangers swore As rejected their one year twenty two point zero two five million dollar qualifying offers. JT. Real Muto had been offered one a few years ago when he was first a free agent, so he was ineligible to receive one. Just wanted to run over some of the details on this and why it matters. So if Schwarber and swore As signed with other teams, the Phillies receive a compensation pick after the fourth round of the twenty twenty sixth draft. Now Here are the guys that also rejected those offers, and the Phillies could sign on any one of these guys Zach Gallon, Kyle Tucker, Franbervaldez, Edwin Diaz, Dylan Cees, Michael King, and Bo Bishett. The Phillies sign one of those guys, the Phillies will lose their second and fifth highest picks in the twenty twenty sixth draft, plus a million dollars from the international bonus pool for the upcoming signing period. If they sign two of those players, they'll also lose their third and sixth highest picks. That's always a consideration when it comes to signing one of those guys. Now that said, if money were no object, any of those guys, I think Bobachett would be on that list, right, Guys, you guys love Bobachett, like them, Yes.

Speaker 2: I'd like them a lot, and I would lose picks for him. It's also the difficulty of trying to continue to be a dynasty rights and that's where you're scouting. You're scouting folks have to do a good job from you know, not just in the first couple of rounds, but they have to be solid for the next you know. Now it's only what fifteen rounds? Is it twenty?

So uh, that's where you have to really rely on your scouts to help fill in some of the folks that are that are gonna have to help them later on.

The Phillies same day on Tuesday, they had to protect players from the Rule five draft, and they protected three players Andrew Painter, no surprise there, Gabrielle and Raconis Junior, No surprise there. Dave Dombrowski said in October that he thinks he could play a role on the twenty twenty six Phillies will see. And then the third guy that they put on the put on the forty man roster was right handed Alex McFarlane, who was their number twenty prospect according to MLB pipeline. He was up there as well when we had Josh Norris from Baseball America on. So they protected those three guys from the Rule five draft. No real surprises out of.

So you may see him get pulled off the board. Some team might work try to grab him, but we'll see. Who knows. He might get traded to and another piece as a piece, so and then somebody could. I think if you acquire a guy, I think you can put him on the forty man roster before the Rule five draft. I believe that's still the rule. Just so you don't you're not subject to losing that player in the draft if he's not protected right now by your original team.

And Andrew Baker was like once a prospect and just a couple of couple of names I wanted to not saying that they're gonna take get taken, but just some names that they had maybe kicked around. You think this guy could taken, Probably not for they left him off the they left them.

Anybody in that list do you think could be non tendered.

That documentary does a good job, you know, documenting what what killed it? People up there loved baseball and was really sad walking out of that building. I mean, what what you know, what a great Uh, it wasn't a great ballpark. Great memories there, you know, taking the taking the subway over from downtown and walking right up under the ballpark and.

Speaker 1: That clubhouse was so by the end in two thousand and four, I mean, they pretty much let that stadium go. I remember watching that clubhouse the linoleum tile they had in the ground over some parts that had started to bubble up. So you'd walk in the clubhouse and you'd step on a big linoleum bubble in the tile.

Speaker 2: The one thing I used to I used to get on the fans about was that there was a pop up in the stands. They never caught it, like zero the time. I used to say, if it was a puck, you'd catch it, they would, but a baseball they can't catch.

That's Mickey Mantle and my dad in the bottom and then my dad, my brother and I when my dad and one of his last years with the Angels.
