Speaker 2: So so I came home and my wife Ryan asked me how it was, and I said, I would really like to go back and do it again. And it was a lot of fun. And I thought about it. It was a lot of fun for a couple of reasons. One is I never get to swing a bat. I'm not going to go to a batting cage down the road and get in the cage for twenty minutes and just you know, get in the sixty mile an hour machine and try to hit some balls off with a luminum bat. It's a competition. I got a real wood bat in my hand. I hit with a torpedo bat on Monday. It was fun. Didn't help me much. But you're in a minor league park where Aaron Judge played, Derek Jeter played, Chase Utley played, Jimmy round. You know, all these great big leaguers came through and played. It was a competition, So you're not just up there hacking at it. You gotta try to pull it. You gotta try to hit it the opposite field. You gotta try to hit it up the middle. It was a lot of fun. And I said to my wife and said, this is this would be perfect for like fiftieth birthday, fortieth birthday, bachelor party, big family event, like a family reunion type thing. Let's go down and do some slug ball. It was a lot of fun. Rubin. I gotta say so thanks for thanks to the I'm glad you.

The funniest moment for me. So with a lot of people were there, Dominic Brown was there, yep. And I'm standing maybe twenty feet from the cage, and Jim's in there taking some practice swings right and dom is maybe in between Jimmy in the cage and me where I'm standing, and Jimmy's in there taking a couple of hacks, and I go, uh, I go, how about that soul Verry? I dropped a big Charlie manual impression on and Dominic Brown here's it. And he slowly turns his head and smiles at me because he caught it right away. It was so funny, like someone's dropping the Charlie impression. He knew exactly what I was doing.

Speaker 3: That is great. Yeah, that was so I'll never I'll never forget the day, Dominic I think they were playing in clear Water against the Detroit Tigers. Remember he took Verlander deep twice, didn't he? In the in the spring training? Yeah, spring training button.

Speaker 3: It was pretty impressive, pretty beautiful. And I think that was also the spring. Didn't he break the hook of his handmade bone that spring? And I remember we poked our head into Charlie's office to get a medical report back when you could do those type of things, and and and Charlie goes dominic dominic broke his handbone.

Speaker 3: It was but it was fun for me. I enjoyed it as well. That's a great idea. I love the college alum replaced in the alumni game. You guys would love that because they those kids can all play five, ten, fifteen years coming out of college. You can still swing it and they would have some hooting and holler and some competition.

I think Larry Anderson's gonna be part of, you know, one of these events at some point and some other alums. But we have some other people that are involved in certain areas, but we're gonna start scale it small and try to build them there.

Speaker 2: So well, I really did enjoy myself and I was like, man, you know again, I hadn't swung a bat in like ten fifteen years, I feel like, and it showed. But when I did make some solid contact and I did once or twice hit, I hit like one good line drive into the outfield, and I was like, man, this is.

Speaker 2: That's kind of good. It was good coming off the bat when you hit one solid But anyway, so yeah, that was a lot of fun. We had that slug ball on Monday. Tuesday night, though, guys, this game the Phillies won in extra innings. It was absolutely insane. They won seven to six, and this was the first time the Phillies won a game on a walk off wild pitch since April twenty sixth, nineteen ninety three.

Speaker 2: Yeah, April twenty sixth, nineteen ninety three. I looked this up and it was one Bell scoring on a wild pitch by Gino Muntali of the San Francisco Way, a veteran stadium. Yes, Wan Bell scored on a wild pitch. That was the last time it happened. Then last night Bryce and Scott scores on a wild pitch, gets his hand stepped on his hand is okay, but just just absolute sanity, Jim, you were there till the bitter end? What was that like?

Speaker 3: I'm not necessarily a better man for it either. There were times when that thing was painful to watch.

Speaker 3: There was there was, There was some highs, and there was some lows, and ultimately they walked off with smiles and handshakes. But man, getting there was a trip through the meat grinder. And you know the highs they hadn't they just haven't you know, hit home runs, they haven't really slugged. And they get a couple of home runs. Turner actually swings the bat really good RBI double, Rojas hits a home run, Schwarmer hits an early home run, wheels his wheels, Jose Alvarado like he climbs up on a high on a high wire, and then you know, bases loaded, no outs and you know, just power stuff Cutter, power sinker, power Cutter gets out of it with three strikeouts. Absolutely incredible. I feel like it should have been his night, and that was in the eighth and then in the ninth. You know, it's always kind of in the back of our mind. I think the defense that this team plays is a concern, and it's always, you know, one errow there always seemed to be one er away from breaking your heart, and especially a shortstop in Turner. Rojas makes his second misplay of the night in center field, can't happen, misplays a you know, catchable ball, a ballish me in his back pocket into an RBI double, and then Trey throws a ball away on a routine ground ball that should have got no Ryan Kirkering out of the inning, game over handshakes first save of his career. But nope, this is the major leagues, and you give extra outs, they come back to bite you right in the ass. And that's what happened. Nathaniel Lowe three run home run. The life goes out of the ballpark. That said, they kept clawing in the bottom of the ninth and walk it off with a couple daring base running plays, the sacrifice fly with Boem coming home, the wild pitch with Stock coming home, and they pull off a really good win on an opening night of a six game Homestand but you know, driving home, I just couldn't stop thinking about the defense and how I feel like it. At some point it's going to break your heart. And Turner is a major concern at shortstop. You know, his first two years in philadelp you forty errors at shortstop, and last night he threw away two balls, only one of them was scored an era. He drops down, he slings it and he gets away from him. You just hope it doesn't, like I said, bite you in the ascid at the absolute wrong time. And if and you can't get these thoughts out of your head, that it might just happen, because that's how much of an issue it has become. At shortstop, in the middle of the diamond the most important to me, the most other than catcher, and I mean the middle of the field. You know, it's such an important defensive position. It's where you put your best typically put your best defender, and he's not their best defender.

Speaker 4: Yeah, what's scary about it? A little bit, and he had been working hard at it all spring long last spring.

Speaker 1: He's been struggling with his throws and struggling at the position at times. But the thing overall for me about that game, it showed their flaws and also showed some of their their pluses and their minuses. Won the flaws in the middle of the field defensively, not Stott. Stot's outstanding and and JT's really really good behind the plate. But when you have your you mentioned the gym, and the guys in the middle of the field are supposed to be your best defenders, and when they don't play well, it really can't affect the outcomes of the games. Fortunately for the Phillies, they showed enough resilience that they put themselves in a position to be able to win it, even though that they basically coughed it up. And it also takes away from the brilliance of what a Wheeler was all about yesterday. And he really pitched well again, doesn't get a win out of it.

Speaker 1: The defense let him down, but you got to be able to pitch over that kind of stuff and make your pitches. And he ended up, you know, throwing spinning one of those breaking balls. I was questioning, like the choice the pitch prior he had just swung at a fastball up out of the zone.

Speaker 1: They spent a little breaking ball right in his wheelhouse, down and in into the into the love zone for those left handers and you know, golf the ball out of the ballpark, and uh, you know, the execution and.

Speaker 1: I just, uh, you know, to me that that's kind of stuff can't happen because it really can break your heart. But the fact that they came back and won that game after all those misplays and all the crappiness, uh, tells you about their resilience and what they were able to do to come back and win a baseball game.

Speaker 3: Alec ball Alec. I talked to him after the game. I thought he had a really good quote. He's like, you know, you look at that ninth inning, you know, we blow a lead, and it would have been easy to go back to the bench, sit down and say, all right, that sucked, we'll get him tomorrow. But you know they didn't. They came out and found a way to win the ball game. But the trade turn of defense just continues to be troubling. We talked about it all winter, and it's going to continue to follow him and continue to get talked about. And moving him to the outfield is going to continue to be an issue here and something that gets pondered unless he can develop some consistency. And you know, you look looking at the recent track record, you wonder can he developed that consistency? You know, Tod, yeah it.

Speaker 2: Yeah. So the defense of course struggling in an example here, guys, of making the numbers work for you. There's like two defensive metrics, and this kind of shows you how like not locked in defensive metrics are I guess you could say if you go by outs above average the Phillies right now, I think this was entering last night's game for the season as a team zero outs above average. That means they're and that's tie for thirteenth in baseball. That means they're a league about a league average defense, league gaverage defense. If you go by defensive run saved, which is on fangrafts, they are negative fifteen defensive run saved, which is twenty eighth in baseball. So if you're a optimist, you go phillies about a league average defense. If you are a more of a pessimist, you would say they're the third worst defensive team major League Baseball according to defensive run saves. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. I mean, there are some games. Rob Thompson said it last night where you see games and you go, okay, they're they're okay, you know they they don't they don't kill you all the too much. And then you watch a game like last night and Jim you mentioned it, Rojas miss played two balls. Uh, you know, Turner had two defensive miscues, and you're going, oh my gosh, and yeah, your head does spin forward to October NLDS NLCS World Series and you go, oh my goodness, gracious, you know it's this possibly happened in the World Series in the NLCS old season. Yeah, the final week of the season, in a big game that they have to win, and there's somebody airmails a throw from the outfield, or somebody you know, lets a ball go between their legs, or somebody doesn't doesn't execute a double play, and they lose a game. They don't make the playoffs, they get knocked out of the playoffs. So yeah, that's.

Speaker 3: It's like, I mean, you you fast forward to the biggest points of the season, you know, October. I think we all think the team's going to play in October. The good enough, but yeah, one miss c missque like this can break the team's heart and send him home. It's like, I remember when the Phillies lost the World Series in ninety three, and I mean Mitch Williams walked a tight rope all season, right, Rubin. I mean you were there, and I remember reading Frank Fitzpatrick's lead and the Inquirer at the morning after Mitch Williams and Joe Carter. And I'm not criticizing anybody here, I'm just stating a fact, but Frank Fitzpatrick's lead to me was absolutely brilliant on his game story. The Phillies season ended last night just the way you always feared it would, you know, with Mitch Williams giving up a bomb or something in the ninth inning, you know, ended up ended the way you always feared it would. With with Mitch Williams walking off the mound and the game off, that was kind of always in the back of your mind that that was going to bite you at the wrong time. And Turner's defense up the middle now is I think in the back of people's minds that it's going to bite you. It's like Rubert always talks about and this Dallas Green had that great expression about, you know, Jimmy Rollins is a two out shortstop, meaning when that ball is hit to Jimmy Rollins, you know it's in his back pocket. It's the third out of the inning walking off the diamond. And you can't say that about Trey Turner. And it's unnerving. It makes people anxious. It's I'm sure it makes everybody from the dugout upstairs to the front office anxious, and it's something that they're going to have to continue to deal with and ponder the solution here because he's here for a long time and you gotta win the games. You're supposed to win, and a lot of times you do that by making the routine play.

Speaker 1: And certainly, I mean, he's one rings playing at that position, and so it's not like he cannot you know, he cannot necessarily win with him, but the way that he's playing, the inconsistency, you know, makes it makes it a little difficult, and he and.

Speaker 1: He does a lot of things to try to get himself to the point where he's more consistent, but it's you know, at times it becomes a struggle and and you know, that's the last thing you want to have happen as a team is to have the defense let you down, because that's a little bit like you know, losing a game late in the game. It's you know, this has the same sort of effect on the team, like like it's an xal like, oh my goodness, And so you don't want to have that happen, you know, consistently. So, uh, we'll see what happens over the course of the season, whether that improves as they as they go or if they make a change. And I can't imagine that they make a change in the middle of the season that drastic unless it really becomes a glaring, glaring problem. I just can't imagine that that he would move off that position.

I know he works his ass office see him in clear Water. He mentioned last night he feels like he's improved. He flat out admitted he's got to clean it up. I feel like a change like that would be more of an off season thing because you'd have to deal with it and with conversations face to face. You have to have a solution. You have to figure out who's going to go there? You know, is it the Miller kid next year? Is he ready? I don't know, he's awfully young. Is it is it stop?

Speaker 2: Trey in his last nine games is batting four twenty one with a nine to fifty ops, so he's he's been swinging the bat pretty well. But Jim, yeah, Jim, you mentioned at the top of the show, how after Alvarado got out of that eighth in and you're going, that shit, that's the story of the night, right, So I always think, you know, I'm sitting at home watching the game, and I'm going, that's that's probably who I'm taking a run at in the clubhouse, Jose Alvarado. He strikes out Josh Bell swinging on a cutter. He strikes out Dylan Cruz swinging on a cutter. He strikes out Alex Call swinging on a cutter, and he has a great reaction coming off the mound. He has fired up again. Basses loaded outs, you know, a couple defensive you know, uh one one miscue there by by Tray kind of loads the bases with nobody out. And that was the first time here's another great little uh trivia trivia question. First time since July seventh, nineteen sixty eight, that Phillies pitcher struck out three straight batters with the bases loaded in the eighth inning. Or later, Dick Hall did it against the Mets.

So entering last night's game, his whiff rate, that's swings and misses on on the cutter this season going into last night, forty one and a half percent. So too, what I have, every five swings at his cutter are just whiffs. That's the highest rate whiff rate of any cutter in Major League Baseball of I think at least fifteen cutters thrown or something like that.

Even mott Strom showed league in a little bit of oil, not as dominant, of course, difficult to be as dominant as he was last year. As in All Star I was kind of curious what was the story on Romano being a Romano being available yesterday on Tuesday Night that's a good question.

Speaker 2: And so then in the ninth inning, real quick you when I mentioned how they keep it alive, Alec Bohm hits that leadoff single to right field. He gets to third base. Uh, he scores on a sack fly to shallow right field. Johann Rojas gets one, puts the bat on the ball, gets it to shallow right field. So you only have two guys in the in the bullpen right now, that have options, so you're kind of limited. And then you also have to go, well, who are you calling up? You know Maxwell's are is down there. They just converted Seth Johnson into a relief.
