00:00:00 Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio. 00:00:04 Speaker 2: I know we love the Cinderella story, and please don't tell me that Texas is a Cinderella story as an eleven seed. Now, they have rumored to have spent around five million dollars on their roster this season. Just to give you an idea, these aren't official. I'm trying to find out how much teams have spent. Kentucky they have spent I think over twenty twenty two million dollars, but Arkansas over ten million. BYU they spent maybe five to seven on one player, Duke Indiana. Indiana missed the tournament. They rumored to have spent at least ten million dollars. Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan, North Carolina, Saint John's and Texas Tech back to North Carolina. Going to be an interesting week for Hubert Davis and North Carolina. And it's strange to hear analysts say, is this a desirable job? And to me, this feels like, you know, they're the blue bloods. These are you know, those stocks that you invest in and you keep them forever, and then all of a sudden you go, why isn't it a great job. Are they spending the money you have? Of course, the comparison eight miles down the road with Duke Hubert Davis bows out, they blow a big lead in the second half, and it feels like and once again, these are just analysts who have been speaking. He might have to make changes to his staff now. Sometimes when they say that, the coach will make those changes, or the coach will say I can't do that. I can't fire these people. But it might be last call for Hubert Davis. Maybe it already has been last call, and we might have some movement there as early as today. Iowall knocks out be defending champ Florida Gators, Saint John's against Ku at the buzzer, and it sounded like this. 00:02:00 Speaker 3: Down comes to golf three seconds, two seconds, stone all the time. 00:02:03 Speaker 4: Take the whim. Play up is good? Play up is good? 00:02:07 Speaker 5: Saint Choge? 00:02:08 Speaker 4: What's it? 00:02:09 Speaker 1: Sixteen seven sixty time the Saint John's. 00:02:14 Speaker 5: Red storm storm under. 00:02:16 Speaker 6: The Sweet sixteen. So the first time since nineteen ninety nine. 00:02:23 Speaker 2: That's courtesy of Westwood one Radio, second straight year in which every Sweet sixteen comes from the five major conferences. You know, major conferences became a thing in nineteen ninety seven with the formation of the Big Twelve. But that's why you can't look at Texas and say they're a Cinderella story. I know they're eleven seed, but you're playing in a big Boy conference there. You know they underachieved maybe during the year, but that doesn't make them a Cinderella story. Miami of Ohio Cinderella story, High Point Cinderella story. We don't have those Cinderella stories. It doesn't take away these are still great games. Kansas Saint John's. There's no Cinderella story there. It was just a great game that felt like a Big East game back in the nineteen eighties. It was, you know, back and forth, physical, low scoring, and the guy who hadn't scored a bucket all game says, I want to have the ball. Here is Rick Patino on that play. 00:03:28 Speaker 7: He is the amazing thing and the funniest thing I've ever been involved with. So we're gonna run a play, but they got vouls to give and Bells comes up to me and says, run Powett, which is a high backscreen pick and roll. So I walk away. I said, okay, Powell walk away and said wait a second, he hasn't scored a bucket and he wants to run a play for himself. And the I'm thinking as I walking, I said, but he's Bells And not only did he do with his right hand. 00:04:02 Speaker 2: Yeah, Dylan Darling, his nickname is Bells. I think people have talked about how he got that nickname. It was a great game strategy. Two Hall of Fame coaches, and that's what you want. I mean, March Madness is all about the coaches. When you think about how great these coaches, how many great coaches are in the tournament, still in the tournament. 00:04:24 Speaker 5: But I started to. 00:04:25 Speaker 2: Think about John Caliperi and Rick Patino, and today's athletic landscape is all about adapting, and some guys can't do it and won't do it, and they bow out, they retire. But you look at Patino and Caliperi. Certainly Patino he's a lifer, but you know, here they are in the sweet sixteen and they have, you know, such a great track record of winning. Cali Peri turned UMass into a force, took Memphis to a national title game one at all at Kentucky, Arkansas won the SEC title. Patino's resume he took Providence to a final four championships at Kentucky and Louisville, and then he went overseas and won a championship in Greece. Then he turned Iona into a tournament team, and now he's got Saint John's back in the national spotlight. Different programs, different decades, same outcome because neither coach stayed the same. They all adjusted. And that's what coaching is nowadays, not just having a system, but knowing when to adapt and change. That's the system and that's why you see tom Izzo. You know, it's no accident his teams get better in the tournament, but maybe it's he's better in the tournament than your coach. And I think that's something to be said to still have the energy to do it. And that's the first thing that goes I think with a coach or even player, sometimes it's us that willingness to you know, or the energy that it takes. Certainly with the coach. I mean, tom Izzo is a Hall of Famer and he could retire, he could walk away, but there's part of him that it feels like, hey, I can do this again. And a lot of his players aren't great pros. But they're great tournament players. And that says something about Tom Izzoe, you know, Cali Peri, Patino, They and I always, and this has been said about other coaches. They could take their players and beat you. They could take your players and beat you. That's how good a coach they are. But when you get college basketball, when you can really it feels like college football. I mean, Nick Saban, most of the work that he did was prior to playing the game. Patino, it's the game. It's it's Cali Perry, it's the game. Hurley, it's the game. It's what do I do right now? With this play? Bill self almost pulled off a really interesting strategy there. He just left a little too much time on the clock, and the last guy in the building you thought was going to take the shot beat you to the hoop. 00:07:10 Speaker 8: Yes, Marvin, especially with somebody like Izzo, I think it's a lot of energy with recruiting transfer a portal, it's never ending. Those guys in the summer, they're running around all over the country looking at players and things like that. And then and I yell, and now you just add a whole other dimension to being a college coach. 00:07:29 Speaker 2: You got to adapt, you have to embrace it. You may not like it. You know, the old Saban wasn't going to do it. Jay Wright didn't want to do it. Tony Bennett didn't want to do it. Jay Wright and Tony Bennett should still be coaching, but they were like, I don't want to do this. I don't want to I don't want to do this. The coaching part is the easy part. It's all the other moving parts where you're going, oh my god, what have we got to do? 00:07:53 Speaker 4: Wait? The kid wants what? 00:07:55 Speaker 5: Wait? 00:07:55 Speaker 4: Do we get him? How much do we got to get him? How much more? Wait? 00:08:00 Speaker 2: He wants to he'll stay. But you're a CEO, not an X and O. And that's the difference here. And you got a cater to the collectives, and then you got coaches, and then you got agents, and then you're dealing with and then you get out there and you get to coach. It's a breath of fresh air. You're like, Okay, this is what I built. But there is no Cinderella story. You may not know Texas team, the Iowa Nebraska Oh awesdude, Yes, Seaton comes in today and he goes, do you know how much they hate each oib oh Man, I said, well, download and he goes. 00:08:44 Speaker 5: Well. 00:08:44 Speaker 2: Driving cross country a couple of times when you go into Iowa, you're told I got directions for you to avoid Nebraska. 00:08:52 Speaker 9: Yeah, they're like, at some point, very soon you have to stop driving west and either go north or south because there's there's just a. 00:08:59 Speaker 4: Piece of the country that you do not want to go. 00:09:02 Speaker 2: That's great, that's great. Poll question today, what are we going to start out with? 00:09:06 Speaker 4: Seton? We got a few options here. One of them, well, two of them. 00:09:09 Speaker 9: Actually we need some help with I need help freezing this one because it sounds more rude than I mean it too. But the biggest losers this weekend were dot M, Florida, Kentucky, Kansas or the lower seeds. 00:09:26 Speaker 2: I'd say Florida def anding national champs. I'd say Florida plus. 00:09:38 Speaker 9: Is there any other time of year that you get more frustrated with basketball than this? 00:09:45 Speaker 4: Okay, I'm. 00:09:50 Speaker 2: I'm just watching and I'm going, okay, that I wouldn't pick them up full court. Then it's going to be a three on two and then Iowa has a jumper from the corner, they break the. 00:10:01 Speaker 4: Press, pick them up in a half court. Huh, it's light pressure. 00:10:09 Speaker 2: Don't let them get an advantage and you let them get an advantage on you. But they're kids, but they're they're coached by grown ups. That's where I go, No, you don't press them, because all they have to do is beat. If they beat it, then they're going to beat you. And they either make a two or they make a three. You gave them the opportunity to size up a three an uncontested three. 00:10:42 Speaker 4: Kid drained it though I did. Kid, that's awesome. 00:10:47 Speaker 2: They're just times when I go, why, why why. 00:10:54 Speaker 4: The give credit to Iowa? 00:10:55 Speaker 2: I mean, it's an unbelievable you want to play that, Marvin. Here's the call on the Hawkeye Radio Network, Hull Park pressure. 00:11:05 Speaker 3: Cots gets it into shirts to hell Fulgarris for three in the league? 00:11:08 Speaker 4: God, God, what three point nine to go? 00:11:12 Speaker 10: No timeout, Lorna's not a timeouts, Iowa, We'll use this last time out? 00:11:18 Speaker 5: My god. 00:11:19 Speaker 4: All you gotta do is beat. 00:11:20 Speaker 2: If you beat it, then it's three on two and then you decide what shot you want. 00:11:28 Speaker 8: Yes, Mark, and this is the national championship coach, you know he just won it last year. I know I. 00:11:35 Speaker 2: Can have some pressure. I just want you in front of me. I can't let you behind me. You got what hey, you got what you deserved, you know, and give Iowa credit. And no, they're not a Cinderelli story either. You can't be in the Big ten and say oh, we're a Cinderella story or the sec You're not a Cinderella story. 00:11:57 Speaker 4: Yes, Mart, what. 00:11:59 Speaker 8: Makes you more angry? Not doubling the best player or just messing up? When a play like that with Floora yesterday. 00:12:05 Speaker 2: Both they're equal. They drive me crazy. It's like, oh, that guy's got the ball. I don't want him to have the ball. I want somebody who is not used. That's why you can look at the Saint John's play and say that's probably the guy you want to shoot. I just don't want an uncontested layup. And it felt like Kansas didn't know what was happening. They're like they had strategy foul, foul, foul, Well now you can't foul, and they almost forgot, like wait a minute, No, you just play good defense and don't let somebody get a backdoor cut or go to the hoop. Oh I couldn't be a coach now, I wouldn't be like mc cronin, uh, you got a technical for clapping, I know, but he clapp with the attitude. Mikes got to win a little more to be that kind of personality. Like Danny Hurley, he's firing, he wins titles. Mick Cronan, it's like he's kind of goofy and kind of crazy, but he's entertaining. 00:13:10 Speaker 4: Yeh see. 00:13:11 Speaker 9: Dan Hurley is aware enough to know like, yes, I'm a lunatic. I wouldn't trust me. I wish I wasn't this way. I'm sorry that I'm this way, but it's who I am and I'm trying to be better. Mick Cronan is sort of like, yeah, you're welcome. You're welcome, that I am who I am. 00:13:26 Speaker 4: You're welcome. There's a very different energy between the two. 00:13:30 Speaker 2: But if you yeah Hurley kind of when he comes on, you'll be like, I know, I know, I know, I just I wish I didn't. 00:13:37 Speaker 4: I know. Mick Cronan is not apologizing. He not. 00:13:41 Speaker 1: Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan Patrick Show week days at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio w app. 00:13:51 Speaker 4: Pauly Fools Go ahead with Tony Foolsco. 00:13:53 Speaker 6: Yeah, as everybody knows, we're the hosts of the award winning Paully and Tony Foolsco Show. But instead of us telling you how great we are, here's how Dan Packrick described us when he came on our show. 00:14:03 Speaker 4: Quick, knowledgeable and funny, opinionated. 00:14:07 Speaker 5: What what are you doing interrupting our promo? 00:14:09 Speaker 1: Yeah, you wasn't talking about you. You took those clips totally of context. 00:14:14 Speaker 6: Oh yeah, well after this promo, I'm gonna take you out and beat you. 00:14:18 Speaker 4: Let me put this into context. 00:14:20 Speaker 5: Shut up. 00:14:20 Speaker 6: Yeah, anyway, just listening to the Pauly and Tony Fusco Show on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. 00:14:27 Speaker 1: Yeah. 00:14:29 Speaker 2: Charles Barkley, Hall of Famer. Eh, haven't seen you, Charles. You been on TV lately here you're doing commercials. Haven't seen much of you. 00:14:39 Speaker 11: Like a real job right now, just like a real Thursday and Friday. Like that's like the only time in my life I had like a real job was you're on from noon to midnight. Once you get to Thursday and Friday. But man, right now my life feels like a real job. But you know, all the heavy lifting is over. Man, It's just fun for here on out. 00:15:01 Speaker 2: But do you like watching college or the NBA if you had to choose, There's. 00:15:07 Speaker 5: Nothing like Mars madness. 00:15:08 Speaker 11: I've said this before, especially the Final four is the greatest thing ever other than the Olympics. I've been honored and blessed to play in the Olympics twice, and it's on a whole other level against any sporting event because I tell people, like, in the playoffs or anything, you have seven games, you never know which game is going to be iconic. But when you go to the Olympics, man, it's unbelievable. But I'll tell you this, man, the Final four is the second best thing I've ever been a part. 00:15:37 Speaker 5: Of, other than the Olympics. 00:15:39 Speaker 4: What frustrates you the most when you're watching these games. 00:15:43 Speaker 11: Well, I can't watch it like a regular fan, Like I'm just like you have to always say, like, what was that guy thinking? 00:15:52 Speaker 5: What was that guy thinking? So like I'm like, and I'm not. 00:15:56 Speaker 11: Trying to say that I was the greatest thing, but I know how to play really good basketball. But you see yourself guys doing stuff and like it was so funny. Yesterday Clark Kellogg, who it was an amazing dude. Man, He's an amazing dude and I love working with him. In Adam Zucker and Nate Berlinson was great and self, Johinna and Renee Montgomery. But Clark says to me, you think they're gonna pressure. I said, no, hell no, they're not gonna put pressure. He said, why would you not pressure? I said, well, you got to lead. But I said, if you put pressure, you're just gonna start a fast break and give up a wide open three more than likely. And five ten seconds later, because I was saying, I said, well you got to lead. Why would you pressure? Just keep the ball in front of you, make them make a shot. I said, if they press, they just gonna start a fast break. And I'm it was just like I I didn't know they I said, they probably gonna end up getting the three too, because that guy's gonna be coming downhill fast. 00:16:57 Speaker 5: And like in the NBA, nobody goes and shoes the layup. They spread to the three. 00:17:01 Speaker 11: So uh, it was really cool moments I had exactly like it worked out. I said, they gonna I said, oh, they better not pressing. They're just gonna be a fast break starter. But I hate watching bad basketball. Uh, that's that's probably my one of my really weaknesses, to be honest with you, I hate bad basketball. 00:17:19 Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm with you on the pressing. Iowa, I didn't understand it. I want everything in front of me. Make them have to work it a little bit. All you gotta do is beat one guy. Yeah, if you beat if you beat the. 00:17:31 Speaker 4: Press, it's three on two and all you got to do is sit in the corner. 00:17:35 Speaker 5: And you got to lead. Dad. 00:17:37 Speaker 11: I know, I was like, because I said, if the press is just gonna be a fast breakstarter, and it was just one of the worst defensive calls. 00:17:46 Speaker 5: Uh, it was just a bad play. And then he compounded it after the. 00:17:49 Speaker 11: Game and said, well we were gonna file. I'm like, that makes it even worse. Are you chasing dudes if you're gonna fout? 00:17:57 Speaker 5: You know? I wish I would. 00:17:58 Speaker 11: I wish she had said, and I think coach Golden is a terrific coach. You know what, because I will actually outplayed them, A deserve to win the game. That's what he should have said. He said, you know what, they outplayed us. Because they outplayed them, they deserve to win. 00:18:14 Speaker 5: That game. Yeah, yeah, they I mean. 00:18:16 Speaker 11: They beat their front line up with a bunch of little dudes. They out worked them, they out hustled. The coach had a great game plan, so listen, that's what he should have said. And saying something like, uh, we like we were gonna file that was a bad look. 00:18:31 Speaker 2: What about Kansas Saint John's with I mean, I like the strategy that Bill self had a foul take time, foul take time, foul take time, but then they kind of forgot what they were doing with that last play. 00:18:47 Speaker 11: Well, first of all, hats off to Kansas were coming back. There's no way they should have even been in that game. 00:18:52 Speaker 5: That game was over. They played terrible. 00:18:56 Speaker 11: They got four offensive rebounds in a row and put back the only reason they were in the if if Saint John's getting one of those rebounds, the game is over. I didn't I didn't mind the strategy. I just thought they should have saved one file. But that was just that was a straight line drive. You can't give up a straight line drive. I know people talking about come help. If you come help, you're gonna give up a three. But there's no way you should get beat on the state. The guy didn't have to veer at all. He just got the ball and drove right down the lane and shot the layup. 00:19:30 Speaker 5: So that was bad defense on his part. 00:19:32 Speaker 12: Uh. 00:19:32 Speaker 11: But you know what, they outplayed Kansas and they deserve to win that game. They almost gave it away now, but they played well. If that team could shoot, they would be dangers. 00:19:43 Speaker 10: Well, they shoot a lot of threes and they're not making them. Hey, you know what it's like, they're like. See, that's one of the reasons I get first at the NBA. Dude, everybody can't shoot threes. And I don't mind you shooting threes. If you're a good three point shooter. 00:19:59 Speaker 4: Would you be s shooting threes if you played in the NBA. 00:20:04 Speaker 11: No, but I probably would have to adapt to shoot some threes. 00:20:08 Speaker 5: But I would work on it, work on it. 00:20:11 Speaker 11: I try to be realistically, if you could get to forty percent. Uh, if you're shooting thirty or less, you shouldn't be shooting threes. 00:20:21 Speaker 5: So uh, no, I would you probably have to adapt. To be honest with. 00:20:25 Speaker 2: You, I got you at thirty four percent when you were in Phoenix for one year. 00:20:30 Speaker 5: That's not good, Dan, But I didn't take a lot I would. 00:20:36 Speaker 11: I bet you can count on one hand the times I took more than three. 00:20:41 Speaker 5: I'm pretty sure of that. 00:20:42 Speaker 4: Lay You had Marley, so you didn't need to be taking threes. 00:20:45 Speaker 5: I did have Martin, that's my man. But like you don't have to shoot. 00:20:49 Speaker 11: Arizona my pictor went off shoots at least amount of threes of any team in the country, there and there. 00:20:55 Speaker 5: And to me them in Michigan. I've always said this. 00:20:58 Speaker 11: I thought Arizona and Michigan were the two best teams all year, no disrespect to Duke or Florida or Yuka. Those are the ones, the number ones. But I thought I've said it from the beginning. I think Arizona is gonna win this thing. I think Michigan is right there with him, and Arizona shoots at least amount of two threes in the in the whole country. Huh. So it's gonna be. It's gonna be. Interests gonna be a great tournament going forward. Man, Mars Madden has never ever less us down. It's always spectacular. 00:21:31 Speaker 2: Talking to Charles Berkley, how do you explain Rick Patino still doing what he does and doing it at a high level and He's been everywhere NBA Europe, small college, medium college, big college. 00:21:46 Speaker 11: He's just a great coach. His players are really good players that developed. I saw Jamal Mashbarn talking about like he coaches the team, but he makes you do individual stuff to work on your basketball skills. And I think that's genius because you have two components of a team. 00:22:06 Speaker 5: You have the team, but you got to work, like, no, you need to go work on this. 00:22:12 Speaker 11: I mean, I just happened to be listening, because you know, we have tend TVs on during the game, watching four games at a time. But I was clicking on in the studio in Atlanta and he was talking about how and Jamal played for him thirty years ago. Patino was the best I've ever seen here. He says, we have a team practice and then he has an individual thing later, and I'm like, how many coaches I know that. 00:22:39 Speaker 5: Greg Popovich always did that. I know pat Riley does that. 00:22:43 Speaker 11: When I was in the finals, a couple of times I saw those guys working on stuff. They didn't come out there just to shoot and get loose. They were working on individual skills. I think that's one thing that's lost, Like, yeah, you can play basketball, but you've got to get better at doing individual things because then you want to come together as a team. 00:23:06 Speaker 2: North Carolina feels like they're at a crossroads with Hubert Davis. 00:23:12 Speaker 11: You're surprising, surprising just quickly. Did he play for the championship like two years ago? 00:23:17 Speaker 4: Yeah? Yeah, in two years. 00:23:19 Speaker 11: But you know, Dan, college sports have changed forever. And what I mean by that these people are not gonna let you pay kids. They're not gonna let you pay them all these millions and lose. It's unfortunate that after being in the championship game two years ago. But I said this, you know, we were talking about Bill sep who's one of the great dudes, great coaches. 00:23:44 Speaker 5: Like the game has changed, man. 00:23:46 Speaker 11: These coaches, you're not gonna get a long runway anymore. These boosters who are coming up with all this money, they're like, wait, you're coming to me every year for millions and millions of dollars. 00:23:58 Speaker 5: And we're not winning. 00:24:00 Speaker 11: The whole the whole landscape has changed, and uh, it'll never be the same again. And that's just the way it is. Is it right or wrong? No, it's not right or wrong. But if you're gonna pay these kids, all this money, you're gonna have to win. 00:24:15 Speaker 5: Uh. And that's just the way it is. It's unfortunate, but that's the way it is. 00:24:18 Speaker 4: Brother, Does Kenny Smith want the North Carolina? 00:24:21 Speaker 5: John? 00:24:23 Speaker 11: Kenny could even make it through the weekend? Dan, he got sick this weekend. No, No, I listen. 00:24:30 Speaker 2: Man, his son's going there because he he didn't want to coach North Carolina. 00:24:35 Speaker 11: Let me tell you two jobs that I would not want any coach right now, but with these players. And I'm not bashing the players because it's different. It's we got two different things going here. In college, you got to pay all these guys every year, and if they don't produce, you the one gonna get to blame. In the NBA, you can't even coach these guys. They're making so much money. Like if they don't like you, you're gonna be gone. 00:25:05 Speaker 5: You can see. It's funny. I was. 00:25:07 Speaker 11: I haven't been watching a lot of NBA, but I've been reading the story what's going on in Orlando between the coach. 00:25:12 Speaker 2: Even when you're supposed to be watching a lot of NBA. You don't want to watch a lot of NBA. 00:25:16 Speaker 5: No, I watched the good teams. I don't watch. I don't, I don't know. My mind won't let me fixate the watch of basketball. They just won't. 00:25:24 Speaker 11: But I see that the coach and what the rumors are true. The coach and Paulo Bankero are not getting along. So the coach can start packing his stuff up, because Paulo Bankero is a heck of a player and he's probably gonna be making fifty sixty seventy million dollars in the next couple of years, and the guy who's making the least amount of money is gonna be packing his bags. 00:25:46 Speaker 5: I think coach Mosler is a good coach. 00:25:48 Speaker 11: I don't know what's going on behind the scenes, but the players have so much power now it's crazy. 00:25:56 Speaker 5: You can't even yell at him anymore. 00:25:57 Speaker 11: You can't, like I don't, when you yell at somebody when they do something wrong, that's called being a coach. Like you can't even people talking about you can't yell at your kids. Yes, hell, you can yell at your kids. You whooped their ass too with. 00:26:12 Speaker 5: Let me tell you. 00:26:13 Speaker 2: Think you're allowed to do that. I don't think you can whoop ass anymore. 00:26:17 Speaker 5: Yes you can. 00:26:17 Speaker 11: That's why these kids are crazy and the kids, let me tell you this, don't ever get no damn hot wheelor race tracks because those things are dangers and they leave whips. 00:26:27 Speaker 2: Uh because oh wait, who like your grandma? Did you take a piece of the try to whip you? 00:26:35 Speaker 5: Listen. 00:26:35 Speaker 11: Once I got once I got too old for switches, oh yeah, and for your white folks switches or tree limbs. Once I got too big for their switches, and then I actually became a switch expert. I would get one that would break after about the fifth or six. You have to get one of those. You can't get one of those that are kind of wet because they don't break. You got to get one that's kind of dry. They break after five or six. In one year, Dad, I made the mistake of getting those hot wheel race tracks, and man, that was one of the worst decisions ever. 00:27:07 Speaker 5: So kids never get through hot wheel race track. 00:27:13 Speaker 4: I loved hot wheels, man, Hey. 00:27:15 Speaker 5: I did too, until it became a weapon. 00:27:19 Speaker 2: I gotta give your grandma a credit for looking at it. You know I got I got spanked with uh with a switch. 00:27:28 Speaker 11: Yeah, listen, I believe in discipline. I don't want I'm not going around telling people to beat their kids. But I think if you don't spank your kids and discipline them, they turn into some of these brats that we got today. I'm not here insist saying I'm not here for child abuse. But how are kids gonna know they're doing something wrong? First of all, you can't rationalize with kids. They're dumbering rocks. They don't know they doing stuff wrong. But when you spank them, that gets the message across, and they because they don't want that. And listen, all these foods are gonna be called. 00:28:03 Speaker 5: Listen. 00:28:05 Speaker 11: You can blast me on social media. You guys know I don't do social media. I don't ever read in the comments. I don't care what you think. Y'all can kiss my big black ass. I'm gonna say what I gotta say. Some of y'all gonna like it, and some of y'all not, and y'all get over it. 00:28:23 Speaker 4: How do we go from Rick Patina? 00:28:26 Speaker 11: And I said, what a great guy is? You know, you know he has you know what, he has a great speech online coaching his team talking about competitive fire. 00:28:37 Speaker 5: I love that speech. 00:28:39 Speaker 11: You all your coaches out there, go get Rick Pottino's speech. He's talking about competing. Where's your competitiveness? When things go bad, that's when you grind that ain't no time to quit. I've always been a big Patino fan. I think he's one of the great And him and Tom is oh Or probably my two favorite coaches because you they gonna get on their players. 00:29:06 Speaker 5: Uh uh. They're probably my two favorite coaches. Yes, hell yeah. And the best coach I played for. 00:29:15 Speaker 11: Some really good coaches, but probably the best coach I played for was Son Smith was great. I love that dude, but probably Billy Cunningham. He didn't take let me tell you something. He would leave Doctor J like if the bus and this one thing like and I'm a firm believer that you you're never supposed to be late, because when you're late, you don't respect other people's time. There have been times when I played for the six Ers, the bus leaving at five. I could see Doctor J off into the bus at five. We're taking off, and that's part of discipline. He like, he say, al al Dominico, what time is He says five? You can see Doc twenty yards away from the bus. We take it off. I want coaches because there's no great player who don't want to be coach. That's why Greg Popovich, to me is one of the greatest ever. You talk to Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, Genobi Lee, David Robinson. He got on their case all the time. And you know why you do that, Dan, Because the other players are paying attention. They're like you let Tim Duncan and David Robinson, Genovl and Parker, who are all Hall of. 00:30:30 Speaker 5: Famers, get away with it. 00:30:32 Speaker 11: You don't have You lose the ability to yell at the other guys. That's why coaches have to hold because there's a responsibility that goes with being a star. I can promise you this, Dan, there's not one single coach and I and you can call them all or player that said to me that you can call that I played with, said I was hard to coach, or I was a painting ass as a teammate. 00:31:00 Speaker 5: I guarantee you that you can. 00:31:03 Speaker 11: Go ask any coach or any player I wanted to be coached. I wanted to be a great player. But you go ask anybody in Phoenix. Now Houston don't count because I sucked out a player. But when I was a great player in Philly and Phoenix, you go ask any coach or any player. I was easy to play with. I just wanted to win. I can go to my grave knowing that. 00:31:30 Speaker 2: Do you wish that the Houston chapter never happened? If you could go back and race that, would you? 00:31:37 Speaker 5: Yes? 00:31:37 Speaker 11: I wish the Signs had never traded me to Houston. That caught me off guard. Probably that probably caught me. Not the Philadelphia thing. I've told that story. I was ready to get the hell out of here. But when I got the call from the Rockets, we had just lost to them in the playoffs. And I get a call from the Rockets at the end of the season, and they. 00:31:59 Speaker 5: Say that. 00:32:01 Speaker 11: Robert Barr, who's a friend of mine. I says Charles. I said, what's up, man? He said, if we trade for you, are you gonna want a new contract? I said, first of all, they're not gonna trade me. I'm the only player we got. Hi And I said, this true story, dam I says, they're not trade me. He says, Charles, if we trade for you, are you gonna want on a new contract? I said, dude, They're not trade me. I'm the only player we got. I called the Sons, I said, you guys thinking about trade me. They're like, no, did you hear that rumor? I says, I can breathe easy now. Two days later, the Rockets called me back and I says Robert, They're not gonna trade me. I'm telling you I'm the only player we got. They're like, Charles, just answer my question. If we trade for you, are you gonna hold out? I says Robert. I've never held out because you know, at that time, me and Michael were really close, and me and Michael made a pact because Scottie Pippen and I think Hardest Brant were making more than him for the Bulls, and I think some guys in Philly and Phoenix were making more than me at the time. And we said we would never complain or hold out. And I said, we have a pack and none of us, neither one of us ever did, and I said it, I would never hold out. 00:33:27 Speaker 5: I have a contract. 00:33:29 Speaker 11: Five days later, I'm packing up going to Houston, and it just you know, no. So I wanted to finish my career in Phoenix. All I wanted was a chance to win. I had four years. Well, we lost to the Bulls and then we lost to the Rockets in seven games. One of us team was going to win the championship. We were the best two teams. We lost to them in seven games. Both times. I was happy with my career and I wanted to just finish it out because I knew my body was starting to give out. And uh, but no, to answer your question, yes, I wish the Houston chapter because you know I played good my first two years. My last two years I sucked as a player, but you know I was done. 00:34:14 Speaker 2: Uh, speaking of done, can we get rid of that basketball on the set? 00:34:18 Speaker 4: The talking basketball I had? 00:34:20 Speaker 5: I did? I just worked there. I don't control anything. 00:34:25 Speaker 2: If that was a TNT, you guys would have thrown that thing. 00:34:29 Speaker 4: You You and Shaq would have beat it up. 00:34:33 Speaker 11: Right, You're okay, But when you work for other people, you have to do what the other people tell you to do. Then the found then you should come to the Founder four one time. Come on, man, it is the coolest event. I'm telling you that Saturday. You got to come to the Founder four. Dan. 00:34:52 Speaker 5: It is a cool thing, brother, it is amazing. 00:34:56 Speaker 4: Where is it this year? 00:34:58 Speaker 5: Indianapolis? 00:35:01 Speaker 4: Now are we hanging out or like? 00:35:05 Speaker 2: Hell, yeah, you can get in trouble in Indianapolis. 00:35:10 Speaker 5: You can get in trouble anywhere. 00:35:11 Speaker 4: Brother, No, you can not me if you with me, we can't. 00:35:16 Speaker 11: So Friday night is on, Saturday is the game. 00:35:23 Speaker 5: Sunday is on and the game is Monday. 00:35:26 Speaker 4: I have to get back for Monday for the show. 00:35:31 Speaker 11: Well, you got to stay because we do a concert every year. I think Zach Brown is a concert this year, and I'm looking forward to it because Zach Brown has a song called the Man who Loves You the Most. So I was on Me and Earnest podcast and I was asking the public and they gave me great songs. But there's a song that Zach Brown saying caused the Man who loves you the Most? And if you got a daughter. I've actually had five or six of my friends use that song. It's the most poignant song for a daddy daughter and I picked it out. They picked it out, and I said, yeah, that's the song for me and my daughter at her wedding. And I'm looking forward to seeing Zach Brown. I've never met him before, but I want to tell him how special that song is to me and my daughter is called a Man who loves you the Most? So does anybody out there get married and plan to for the father, daughter, Dan, the man who loves you the most. You got to listen to the words too, because they're very poignant. 00:36:31 Speaker 4: Good to talk to you, all right, brother, a man. 00:36:34 Speaker 5: You know I appreciate you. Brother. Keep doing your thing. 00:36:37 Speaker 1: Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. When we last left you, or you left us, you would hit eight of eight out of a ten team, Parlay, I was going to pay out over five thousand. 00:37:01 Speaker 4: Dollars, that is correct? Then all right, well you seem despondent. So what happened? 00:37:11 Speaker 13: So I needed Akron plus eight and Arizona minus thirty one. 00:37:18 Speaker 4: Okay, it was a long time ago now. 00:37:21 Speaker 13: But if I recall correctly, Arizona covered the thirty one, Akron did not, and I did not cash out. 00:37:32 Speaker 2: If the games weren't running concurrently, would you have tapped out before the last game. Let's say Arizona won that and they covered, and you still had the Akron bet. Would you have cashed out for what one thousand dollars. 00:37:49 Speaker 13: Well, it's assuming at that point it would be even higher, Like say it was like, you know, twenty five hundred and three, I probably would have cashed out and then just lied and said I didn't. It seemed tougher. 00:38:01 Speaker 4: How was social media treating you? 00:38:03 Speaker 13: They were very rude to me, Dan, Actually, there's a lot of a lot of keyboard warriors who after the fact were like, should have cashed out? 00:38:10 Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, because. 00:38:10 Speaker 4: It lost, Yeah, yeah, Paulie. 00:38:13 Speaker 3: Ackron was down five and a half to Texas Tech the end of the game ninety one seventy one Red Raiders over your. 00:38:19 Speaker 4: Zips, yes, Todd, So. 00:38:21 Speaker 14: John came away with zip because of that, I'm gonna give you a blue one. Feel though he could have won, like what fifty six hundred. 00:38:27 Speaker 13: Dollars was on the line, Yeah, I would have shared with you too, Todd. 00:38:30 Speaker 4: And until, uh, do you have any bets coming up? 00:38:35 Speaker 13: Well, Dan, I actually I genuinely didn't bet anything over the weekend. I legitimately was so mad on Friday that despondent. Some would say, yeah, like, I know, no one cares about your parlay that lost by one leg, But like I believed I also told the entire nation ahead of time that it was hanging in the balance, which probably in the gambling god's eyes, was not a great idea. True, But I'll be back. I'm just I didn't even want to look at the board after that. 00:39:03 Speaker 4: The current favorite to win it all is still Duke. 00:39:08 Speaker 13: Yet still Duke. The the three one seeds that are left are all favored in their region, and then Houston is favored in the South because I guess I could call him Pauli's Gators got bounced. 00:39:22 Speaker 2: Now they're my Gators, they're your Gators. I had him in the championship game. Yeah, I had him losing to Arizona. 00:39:28 Speaker 13: Yeah, Paul had Gonzaga in his Final four. And Seaton had Miami, which actually looked like they were gonna maybe pull one over on Purdue for a bit there. 00:39:36 Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, I thought, what does Seaton know that I don't know when he picked Miami, and I'm going, I don't know if I watched any Miami. 00:39:43 Speaker 4: Basketball and of us. Sometimes it's better that way. 00:39:51 Speaker 9: Hey, You know, like when you go through the bracket matchup by matchup and you look sort of not at the big picture and you just go who do I like better here? 00:39:59 Speaker 4: The name you end up with Miami in the fun anything else you'd like to add, Dylan. 00:40:06 Speaker 13: Yeah, Dan, we actually have updated standings for the disappointment draft. 00:40:10 Speaker 4: Okay, you want to explain the disappointment draft. 00:40:13 Speaker 13: Yes, So you guys each picked three teams among the one through four seeds, and the goal is to win the fewest games with those teams. So you got you started off negative based on who he picks. If you picked the one seed, you start off negative four to negative three. It's so on and so forth. So the goal is to lose. Okay, So in the lead right now is Pauli at four under that Florida loss was big for him, but he still got Houston and Michigan State in there. And then Dan, you and Todd tied for second at three under m HM Todd gonzag and Virginia loss for Todd, but he's got Iowa State. All three of yours are still in play, which that's not good, Neil. Yeah, and then followed up by Marvin, he's got Arizona, Yukon, Nebraska, Nebraska sneaky Nebraska thing there, and Seeden is at one under Kansas lost it's big for him, and then he's got Duke and Bama. So Seedn's got a little ground to cover, but it's a long tournament. 00:41:14 Speaker 2: Thank you, Dylan, Sorry about your parlay. Dave in Indianapolis, Hi Dave, what's on your mind today? 00:41:25 Speaker 4: Hey Dave, Hey Dave. Jeff in Indianapolis, Hi Dan, how are you good? 00:41:37 Speaker 12: Jeff? 00:41:39 Speaker 5: Good? 00:41:40 Speaker 12: So my daughter got married and right in the middle of COVID in twenty twenty, and as we were preparing for the wedding, we were going to have three hundred and fifty four hundred guests, and by the time COVID did its thing, we were down to sixty some odd people and my daughters, of course in a full freak out mode. And I have this id to use the Zach Brown song Oh, that you're going to use as our dad daughter dance, and she did not want me to tell her what it was ahead of time. I have told my son in law and or yeah, my son in law to be at the time, and I said, Hey, there's a part in the song where there's out of one minute instrumental and when that happens, I want you to walk out and I'm going to kind of ceremonial, ceremonially, and you off and watch the rest of the song. I make it through walking her down the aisle. I know you're worried about that. I make it through that, no problem, because we're down to fifty people. It's like nobody there. I'm singing to her. I'm singing every word of the song, and these my son in law walks out there and mouse like a puddle. I literally can barely get to my seat, sit down and cry. Everybody's laughing at me, So good luck. Don't sing it, don't do it. Find another song, do some Metallica something, Do something a little more upbeat. 00:42:53 Speaker 2: And I'm not worried about the first dance because I can hide. I just put my head, you know, on your shoulder or something, and it's over by then. But walking down the aisle and then you give that speech. Oh I remember the first time I. 00:43:10 Speaker 4: Saw no I wonder if they would let me tape it. We could produce it up. 00:43:21 Speaker 2: Maybe we tape it and then they then they show the video. We bring out video screen and then I and that's that's not a crazy thing. Steven Houston, Hi, Steve, oh Dan, don't tape it don't do that to the girl. 00:43:38 Speaker 15: Come on, listen the beta blockers. 00:43:41 Speaker 5: Brother. 00:43:42 Speaker 15: Imagine have your daughter asking you to officiate her wedding, which happened to me last November. I cry at people's weddings when. 00:43:49 Speaker 4: I don't even know them. 00:43:50 Speaker 15: So in finding a way to get through this, my friend, you're dealing with a flood of adrenaline. You only usually associate adrenaline with fear or sports or something like that. Overwhelming joy and adrenaline not a usual association. 00:44:04 Speaker 4: This pill, this beta. 00:44:06 Speaker 15: Blocker, allows you to not feel the effects of that adrenaline for a few moments, so you can actually take a breath. It doesn't check you out emotionally. It allows you to be there in the moment and be there as your kid wants you to be there for her. It's the greatest thing ever. 00:44:22 Speaker 4: Man. 00:44:23 Speaker 2: All right, thank you, Steve. I'm gonna get a prescription for beta blockers. Yes, Marvin, did you cry at your wedding? 00:44:32 Speaker 10: Uh? 00:44:33 Speaker 4: When I saw my wife? Yes, I did. Yeah. 00:44:37 Speaker 2: But the weird part was she's walking down the aisle and she is stunning, and I see her lean back like she's going to fall, and I go, oh my god, she's fainting. Well, it turns out that she had a relative who was trying to get a picture, and he stepped out into the aisle all on her dress, and she nearly fell back because Timmy had to get a great picture. But yeah, I did. I did tear up when I saw her. But then I laughed because well I didn't laugh. I laughed after I realized that they you know, this guy stepped on her gown. 00:45:19 Speaker 4: Yeah, Paul, damn, we've talked about this before. 00:45:21 Speaker 3: I'm proposing there should be an enforcer at all weddings, like almost like a wedding cop that prevents Timmy from walking out with this camera or someone do takings away from the bride and groom, especially the bride. 00:45:33 Speaker 4: Well, Timmy wasn't trying to do that. 00:45:35 Speaker 3: Right, But do you have an enforcer at your daughter's wedding? 00:45:38 Speaker 4: No, I don't think I'll need it. 00:45:40 Speaker 3: I say the big german. 00:45:41 Speaker 4: Yes, Ton, maybe a little electric fence along the aisles. 00:45:44 Speaker 5: Then steps out of line, quick shocked. 00:45:46 Speaker 2: Everybody's got to wear a collar? Why, okay, zap him better? 00:45:50 Speaker 14: Been like a dress getting ripped in the middle. 00:45:52 Speaker 4: Brad in California, Hi, Brad, what's on your mind. 00:45:56 Speaker 12: Ni there, good morning here. I got an idea for you. You know how practice makes perfect, Well, what you need to do is the rehearsal dinner. At the rehearsal, do it over and over and over again, and just get rid of all your tears at thin. 00:46:13 Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm not responsible for the rehearsal dinner. I have to give the speech after the wedding, at the actual ceremony. 00:46:24 Speaker 4: So when you go after the wedding, yes. 00:46:27 Speaker 14: And it's not the same. You could practice a game winning shot in the playground or in your backyard, but when it's actually time and everyone's there and you're in the moment, I'm sure that is not going to replicate practice. 00:46:37 Speaker 2: Yeah, because the reception and it's you're going to see people and they make the trip and it's, oh my god, and then all of a sudden, you know, I found I think I have stage fright. 00:46:48 Speaker 4: I do. 00:46:50 Speaker 2: I think I might be diagnosed as having stage fright, and it and what it is is when I have the microphone and I hear my voice and nothing else, something happens to me. 00:47:06 Speaker 4: So I don't I never thought of it. 00:47:08 Speaker 2: My wife goes, do you have stage fright, and I had never thought of it. But if I if I hear my voice on a microphone, While other people may melt when they hear that. 00:47:22 Speaker 4: For me it's I'm like, oh my god, what Todd. 00:47:27 Speaker 14: How is that possible? You've given out super Bowl trope? Is in all these events with hundreds of millions of people tuning in, you would be like the last person on the planet I would think would have experienced something. 00:47:36 Speaker 4: But this is different. 00:47:38 Speaker 2: I don't know what stage fright consist of. But if I'm I don't know, I can get emotional in a second, and it's you know. I went to see Book of Mormon on Broadway. It's a comedy, original cast, original cast. Oh see, yes, Josh Gadd was in it. And they went to intermission and I'm crying, and my kids are and my wife, my wife, who is very short on emotion, she goes, what. 00:48:10 Speaker 4: Is wrong with you? 00:48:11 Speaker 2: Like not nothing's you know, sympathetic, like why is this affecting you? But it was a live performance, and they's just something about you see somebody doing it right in front of you. It's not like hey, take three take you know, a concert. When you see people doing things in real time right in front of you. That gets me too, So I don't know if I have stage fright, but there's something that happens and I go out and I turn on that microphone and I'm going to be at the rehearsal, or I'll be at the reception. And that's why I'm gonna bring my son up to interpret. 00:48:50 Speaker 4: Yes, boom. 00:48:51 Speaker 3: Or we could treat it like hosting Sports Center or Football Night in America. We get an IFB in your ear, we get you a script, a nice teleproper in the background, and we'll give you a couple ofhighlights. First I Cubs cards bottom second, and then you switch right to the speech. 00:49:04 Speaker 2: No, because I was hosting the Olympics in London and it was the last day hosting the Olympics, and I remember thanking all of the people who were there and I got emotional. 00:49:16 Speaker 4: It was weird. I'm like, damn, you know. 00:49:19 Speaker 2: I said, hey, I just want to show you all the people, make you know all this, you know where it can happen, And all of a sudden, I'm falling apart. And if I could cry and only have tears, I'd be okay. But when you have that guttural oh my god, what's wrong with him? 00:49:38 Speaker 14: Yes, hut, But the word stage fright sounds like a terrible thing or a bad thing or a negative quality. It was actually a very sweet thing that you're experiencing. No, no, no, you'd rather not be going through that type of emotion in the moment. I think people I know would I would appreciate seeing someone get that emotional over. 00:49:52 Speaker 2: No nothing like no, no, no, not at all. Stage fright isn't a good thing. No, because I can't get through the speech. 00:50:01 Speaker 14: People understand what the the no, no, how huge the moment is and how much it means to you. 00:50:06 Speaker 2: You know what they're gonna do, and to be like I thought, he spoke for a living like what what happened to him? 00:50:15 Speaker 4: Man? I didn't know? He cried. 00:50:17 Speaker 2: We were at ESPN. I didn't even want to be at ESPN for that reunion. And I went to that reunion and sat up on the dais with Robin Roberts and Chris Berman and Bobby and I started crying because I saw all those people that I worked with out in the audience, and Robin Roberts even said, Man, are you okay? 00:50:41 Speaker 4: I'm like, why am I crying? 00:50:43 Speaker 5: Get it together. 00:50:44 Speaker 4: Charlotte Absie, you're a big baby. Why didn't you have those tears go back, back, back back bad? Yeah, I'm crying. 00:50:56 Speaker 8: Yes, Marvin, have you always been emotional like this? Or has this become your thing later in life? 00:51:04 Speaker 2: I think it's later, but I don't know when it No, I've had it for yeah, I've had it for a while. Yeah, but I don't know why. Although I come from a family of criers, like they all cry. Now, I'm hoping all of them cry at my daughter's wedding and then I'll feel a little better. So I don't know if I can say to everybody, hey, before I start this speech, could everybody cry along with me? 00:51:37 Speaker 4: They're going to be going that is wrong with that guy? And he used to be Onny Good. 00:51:42 Speaker 3: Yeah, Paul, I'm really starting to think that video backup is the play, because then if you don't make it past syllable too, you just point I point to the big man, and we don't know. 00:51:52 Speaker 4: No, I'm pointing to my son. 00:51:54 Speaker 2: I'll just say Jack, just I'll have him, and people say wow, I say, got his son up there, and let's say Jack's here to interpret. And then if I can't make it, and then I'll just fill in the blanks, you know, I'll come back for two or three words and then I love you. 00:52:09 Speaker 4: Then I'll give it to him. 00:52:12 Speaker 2: All right, take a break.
