As an eleven seed now, they have rumored to have spent around five million dollars on their roster this season. Just to give you an idea. These aren't official. I'm trying to find out how much teams have spent. Kentucky they have spent I think over twenty twenty two million dollars, but Arkansas over ten million. BYU they spent maybe five to seven on one player. Duke Indiana. Indiana missed the tournament. They rumored to have spent at least ten million dollars. Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan, North Carolina, Saint John's and Texas Tech back to North Carolina. Going to be an interesting week for Hubert Davis and North Carolina. And it's strange to hear analysts say is this a desirable job? And to me this feels like, you know, they're the blue bloods. These are you know, those stocks that you invest in and you keep them forever, and then all of a sudden, you go, why isn't it a great job? Are they spending the money you have? Of course, the comparison eight miles down the road with Duke Hubert Davis bows out, they blow a big lead in the second half, and it feels like and once again these are just analysts who have been speaking he might have to make changes to his staff.

You know, major conferences became a thing in nineteen ninety seven with the formation of the Big Twelve. But that's why you can't look at Texas and say they're a Cinderella story. I know they're eleven seed, but you're playing in a big boy conference there, you know, they underachieved maybe during the year, but that doesn't make them a Cinderella story. Miami of Ohio Cinderella story, High Point Cinderella story. We don't have those Cinderella stories. It doesn't take away these are still great games. Kansas Saint John's. There's no Cinderella story there. It was just a great game that felt like a Big East game back in the nineteen eighties. It was, you know, back and forth, physical, low scoring, and the guy who hadn't scored a bucket all game says, I want to have the ball.

So we're going to run a play, but they got fouls to give and Bells comes up to me and says, run Powett, which is a high backscreen pick and roll. So I walk away. I said, okay, Powell walk away and said, wait a second. He hasn't scored a bucket and he wants to run a play for himself. And then I'm thinking as I'm walking, I said.

Speaker 3: Dylan Darling his nickname is Bells. I think people have talked about how he got that. It was a great game strategy. Two Hall of Fame coaches, and that's what you want. I mean, March Madness is all about the coaches. When you think about how great these coaches, how many great coaches are in the tournament, still in the tournament. But I started to think about John Caliperi and Rick Patino, and today's athletic landscape is all about adapting. And some guys can't do it and won't do it, and they bow out, they retire. But you look at Patino and Caliperi. Certainly Patino he's a lifer. But you know, here they are in the sweet sixteen and they have, you know, such a great track record of winning. Cali Peri turned UMass into a force, took Memphis to a national title game one at All in Kentucky, Arkansas won the SEC title. Patino's resume, he took Providence to a final fourampionships at Kentucky and Louisville, and then he went overseas and won a championship in Greece. Then he turned Iona into a tournament team, and now he's got Saint John's back in the National Spotlight. Different programs, different decades, same outcome, because neither coach stayed the same. They all adjusted. And that's what coaching is nowadays, not just having a system, but knowing when to adapt and change. That's the system and that's why you see tom Izzo. You know, it's no accident his teams get better in the tournament, but maybe it's he's better in the tournament than your coach. And I think that's something to be said to still have the energy to do it. And that's the first thing that goes I think with a coach or even player. Sometimes it's just that willingness to you know, or the energy that it takes, certainly with the coach. I mean, tom Izzo is a Hall of Famer and and he could retire, he could walk away, but there's part of him that it feels like, hey, I can do this again. And a lot of his players aren't great pros, but they're great tournament players. And that says something about tom Izzoe. You know, Cali Peri, Patino, they and I was, and this has been said about other coaches. They could take their players and beat you. They could take your players and beat you. That's how good a coach they are. But when you get college basketball, when you can really it feels like college football. I mean Nick Saban, most of the work that he did was prior to playing the game. Patino, it's the game. It's it's Cali Perry, it's the game. Hurley, it's the game. It's what do I do right now? With this play? Bill self almost pulled off a really interesting strategy there. He just left a little too much time on the clock and the last guy in the building you thought was going to take the sht beat you to the hoop.

Speaker 6: Yes, Marvin, especially with somebody like Izzoh, I think it's a lot of energy with recruiting transfer a portal, it's never ending. Those guys in the summer, they're running around all over the country looking at players and things like that. And then and I yell. And now you just add a whole other dimension to being a college coach.

Speaker 3: You got to adapt, you have to embrace it. You may not like it, you know, the old Saban wasn't gonna do it. Jay Wright didn't want to do it. Tony Bennett didn't want to do it. Jay Wright and Tony Bennett should still be coaching. But they were like, I don't want to do this. I don't want to I don't want to do this. The coaching part is the easy part. It's all the other moving parts where you're going, oh my god, what have we got to do?

You're like, Okay, this is what I built. But there is no Cinderella story. You may not know Texas team, the Iowa Nebraska Oh awesdude, Yes, Seaton comes in today and he goes, do you know how much they hate each ob man? I said, well, download and he goes, well, driving cross country a couple of times when you go into Iowa, you're told I got directions for you to avoid Nebraska.

Speaker 3: Now, if I'm coaching a mid major, I look at my team and I treat it like it's a junior college. I'm going to get you for one or two years, and I'm probably going to lose you. If you're a good player, I'm probably going to lose you. And this is where and I heard Seth Greenberg talk about this. Can I get you for two years? And then let's say a big powerhouse comes in and wants you to transfer? Can I get a finder's fee for you taking my guy? Can the mid major get some money from, you know, one of these big conferences and say we're going to pay you whatever, like a buyout? Is there a way that you could look at mid majors and say how do we survive here? Miami Ohio was a great story. But once again, if I'm a power five conference, I'm not scheduling those guys. Now, I could do it because I have some kind of relationship maybe with a coach or maybe I coached there, But I have everything to lose, they have everything to gain. And I'm just going by what I would be doing. If I'm coaching at a big school, I'd be like, no, it's dangerous. Are we gonna play on a neutral site. They're gonna come down to our place. We're not going to their place. But you're hearing these mid majors these coaches saying, hey, we'll play anybody. High Point coach, We'll play anybody. VCU coach, We'll play anybody. Miami, Ohio, We'll play anyone. By the way, the State of Ohio did not have a good tournament. I think that was Miami of Oho, Ohio State Akron. Is there another team I think they went over. I don't know if is there another Ohio team that I missed in the tournament. But I would treat my school my team like it's two years, two years, and I'm going to lose some of these guys. Now, we find the mid majors do damage normally when they have their collective stay for about four years, three years. Like Purdue's players are good enough, but they're not great enough. So they're good enough to play high level and they stay, I mean Zach ed stayed. Plus the amount of money that you're going to get most of them aren't playing in the NBA, and you could still get sort of a mid major feel to a team like Purdue.

So let's say James Madison has a really good quarterback and Texas takes him. Texas has to pay a fee to James Madison to go from the Group of Five to the Power four conferences.

I think that's that's the important part of what I'm looking at. I don't want the mid majors to go away, but they are. They're going to Yes Ton By.

And I love how mick Rick Patino has what my pop used to call Italian Alzheimer's. All you remember are the grudges. He wants some March madness, revenge against Duke and Christian Latner and best to Lebron, passing the Chief Robert Parrish for most regular season games played with sixteen hundred and twelve. He may never catch Michael as far as NBA titles, in fact, Michael may end up with more NASCAR titles as well, but as far as longevity and sustained excellence, Lebron is definitely the goat and my worst as. Coach Mark Fugh alluded to in his press conference that in the age of Nil, a powerful basketball program like in Zaga may now have a hard time competing in the future, and if Carolina does move off of coach Hubert Davis, there may be a mutual interest in Mark Fugh taking over a program that hasn't hired a basketball coach outside of Carolina family in seventy four years. This may be the perfect time for it. And to me, you're still North Carolina get a big name.

Watching college basketball this time of the year is so fun because just how important every possession is and how much it means means to those kids. Man, the drama is always fantastic. Best of the weekend in how terrible the last place press defense was against Iowa. It's my best because he like, he knocks down the corner three with confidence, and then he left. He leaves his left hand up in the air, saluting his pops in the DDC. That was special, man. And worst of the weekend in I was watching the games and I was channeling my inner DP.
