So we have basketball coming up tonight and I have some points spreads for entertainment purposes only Duke minus six and a half against Saint John's, Michigan minus eight and a half against Alabama, Iowa State minus three and a half against Tennessee, and Yukon minus one and a half against Michigan State. Now looking ahead to the Elite eight odds, I was curious you got Iowa and Illinois another Big Ten matchup. Big ten's having a really nice tournament and really nice year when you factor in Indiana football, and now you've got Purdue advancing. Purdue is getting six and a half against Arizona, Iowa getting six and a half against Illinois. Satan, what's the first hour poll question today? I got one here from Paul after last night's games, which is worse. Too many players on the court, are not enough players.

Speaker 2: And you know, it was a great year for Nebraska, you know when you consider that that is a football school and what they did with basketball, and they were a good team from start to finish, and we thought it was going to be a great game. It turned out to be a great game going against Iowa and It's just tough to end that way because if I said to Nebraska fans at the beginning of the year, hey, you're going to go to the Sweet sixteen, but you're going to lose in dramatic fashion, and you're going to lose to Iowa, you're still signing up for that. But this is your hated rival. And give credit to Iowa. They hung in there. They just lingered. They just lingered long enough, and they end up picking up the win, all right. You've got a couple of teams that can advance. Couple more Big Ten teams that can advance tonight Michigan State, Michigan. If I'm Greg Sanke in the SEC and I'm watching this and I go, okay, all right, you're kind of piling on here a little bit. You know, we can take Michigan or Ohio State winning a national title in football, now Indiana, and then we got basketball basketball dominating, and a couple SEC teams bounced. Certainly with Arkansas, it was a great run for John Kelli Perry. But here's the hard part. You know, you're not going to have Acuff back next year. He's going into the NBA. That's the hard part. Because John has never had a problem recruiting, and we've talked about this. I've talked about this with him. Can you get players who are going to stay for two years or three years? Because I think the wave of the future is these kids are going to make enough money to stay in college that they're not going to leave early and maybe be a second round pick or not get drafted. They might stay if they can make five hundred thousand dollars or somebody makes seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars and they'll stay an extra year, or maybe they'll stay for two extra years. Your mid majors are going to lose their players, you know, their star player that might appear on the radar. Then all of a sudden, you know, these big schools will swoop in and pick them up. You know, John still needs to be able to get that core that can be there the next year. You want to have a Cuff. He's a tremendous player and he was wonderful throughout the tournament. The last tournament run. I can remember for somebody like this, Steph Curry at Davidson. I think Steph scored one hundred points in the tournament. Acuff had around ninety. I think he surpassed his eye on Williamson's debut with the NCAA tournament. But he's a great coach when you think about it, and look what's happening so far with March Madness, I mean, Tom Izzo one of the greatest coaches of all time. Patino, you can make an argument there's no greater coach strategy wise and x'es and o's than Rick Patino. And that's incorporating NBA and college. His ability to do what he does every place that he goes is really remarkable, unmatched. But you have you know, Danny Hurley's got a couple of titles there. There are a lot of high end coaches who have gotten this far. And the tricky part is North Carolina is sitting there open and you wonder what coach in the NCAA Tournament might end up at North Carolina because it feels like, and I was told this yesterday, North Carolina wants to get out ahead of the Kansas situation because if Bill self steps down. Who could then fill that void? And North Carolina knows you're kind of on the clock. You want to make sure you get your guy. You want to get your guy before that opening happens at Kansas. By the way, Bill Murray's son, Luke Murray, he's the offensive coordinator basically for Yukon basketball. He's going to take the BC job. Now that's e me because yesterday I had Dan Hurley on and I should have asked him, now, are you prepared to lose Luke? And you know it was rumored there. I got caught up and ran out of time and when we got done, I made it. I should have asked him about that, because you know, you have this odd you know, this tournament run, and you're going to lose a really, really, really valuable person on that coaching staff. It's inevitable. But then you know, I got the heads up that he was probably taking the BC job and I didn't ask, So that that's on me.

They lease it out and I go, if you get pulled over, you're in trouble, like get reeked. And the guy go, I don't smoke, but I drive this I've been driving this car for three weeks now. I'm like, does it get you know, the fine Corinthian leather gets absorbed there in the carpet. I don't know how much. They're smoking there, but somebody maybe got hot boxed in that. Speaker 4: Wondering one thing about college basketball. Do you think the schools that take these one and dons would prefer not to take the one and dons and have guys that stay? Like you asked Danny Hurley yesterday, do you want these big names or you want guys for years and years. He's had years and years like Ioways got a bunch of twenty one year olds on the roster.

Speaker 2: Yeah, Purdue, same way. Yeah, you get that experience. And I still believe in that it's nice to have that freshman. And but we've seen you gotta have other players. You can have the freshman, I gotta have, you know, some juniors and seniors in there because of these moments right now, March madness, because we've seen, you know, these freshmen and they're only there for six months, and they may be approaching it that way that it's not the end of the world if they don't win a title, because they're going to the NBA. It's the end of the world to these Purdue kids who were going to I've been there three or four years, or the Nebraska players who have been there three or four years.

You know, at worst you'll be a second round draft pick. So they believe that, and then you'll find a lot of these guys and it's only two rounds. I mean the draft used to be like eight or nine rounds. But now you know, you got to decide, am I really ready to go or do I need another year? Hey I can stay another year because they're gonna pay me X amount of money, yes, Martin.

Robbie part of the broadcast team last night for Iowa and Nebraska, Houston and Illinois. Thanks for joining us. I know you had a late night. At what point do you realize Nebraska has four players on the floor.

Speaker 3: Well, first off, you know, you did arrest Adam Sandler in the longest yard, so he may have something to say about that for the eulogy. But I realized that when coach Van Gundy pointed out. Honestly, I was in the middle of a thought and then I just was like, oh my god, he's wide open, and that's you know, coach with the eyes right there. He saw that, and that was a great catch by him. I don't think Dan and I've ever seen in a high major college or you know, NBA at this level, I've never seen four guys on the floor all of the time out that. That was shocking.

Speaker 2: Okay, but give me accountability for something like that. How does that happen with coaches, assistant coaches, and the players themselves.

Speaker 3: Well, you see now in these broadcasts where there will be an assistant coach with a board and there will be five names on it with five numbers, and that's who you're guarding. I can only imagine that it's just a total miscommunication where coach puts somebody in and that guy's not paying attention, and then you get to the floor and Rank mast was sort of standing up and trying to get in the game. But I just think it's on both. You know, it's on the players to listen, it's on the coaches to double check, and it's just a it's a total failure all the way around in that situation.

Speaker 2: Does the official can he play a role in this to say to coach, hey, you only got four on the floor?

Speaker 3: Can that That is a good point right there? And a lot of those you'll see the officials in all of these games where they're counting guys to make sure there's not six. And I'm sure that a lot of officials would say to that bench, hey you've got four guys out here. Yeah, that's that's a great point. But that's definitely a better question for a guy that has refereed in the NCAA tournament games than for me. But yeah, that's that's a really good point.

Speaker 2: But you get penalized for six, you don't get penalized for four correct, correct, you just get scored on. How good is Yeah, that's true. How good is Iowa?

Speaker 3: I think they're good, and I think they're playing their best basketball at the right time. You know, for so much of this season it's it's been well, it's it's Ben at Sturt's and it's just kind of everybody else and can he get enough help? And his usage is so high and his minutes are so high, and he's just having to do so much. But whether it's full Garis and in the Florida game with the shot, or even last night, he was tremendous and in a number of ways, Tate Sage, you know, Tavian Banks in the in the Florida game had twenty that They've gotten contributions from some other guys and they they're just so well coached, like Ben McCollum is an incredible story of winning everywhere and scheming and the attention to detail. You go to a practice, they're they're working on stuff that is so you know, like minute and just hey, I don't want you here, I want you to be a step to the left, or the footwork needs to be this, like just things that. You know, a lot of people are even a lot of players and coaches would probably let slide. He's not letting slide. That dude is on it with the details.

Speaker 2: Illinois surprised me. I know they're a really good team. I know they got the players from the Bulkans, but you know that defense. I mean, Houston's not a high scoring team, but still you held them to fifty five in a home game. Yeah, that one surprised me a lot. How about you?

Speaker 3: Well, and yes, because I saw Illinois in February and they were giving up ninety points to seemingly it felt like everybody. The problem has never been offense for Illinois. It has been the defensive side of the floor. I thought VCU could give them some problems because I saw them in the A ten Championship game and they had dynamic guards, they had some shooting on the perimeter. It's like, all right, that's going to be a tough cover. And they overwhelmed them. And they kind of did the same thing with Houston, and not just the home game, but like Milos Huzan and Emmanuel Sharp and Jojo Tuckler played in the National Championship Game last year, So you have the home environment, you've got experienced players, You've got probably two lottery pick freshmen, and they just kept them stuck in the mud all night long. And Illinoi's got the positional size and right now they're guarding at a high level, and we know they could score like they're scary team that they're going to guard.

Speaker 2: Like this is the Big Ten of basketball conference or a football conference.

Speaker 3: I guess. We've won the last three national championships with the Big Ten, so I guess football. But this is quite the season for the Big Ten in basketball and certainly the just the overarching story of no national championships from two thousand and on, with tom Izzo being the last to do it. Maybe this is the year to break out of that. But you know, we'll see there's some really good teams left from other conferences. But the Big Ten has had a great season. And you know, we were laughing yesterday that Nebraska and Indiana have like flip places. The Nebraska basketball team is all of a sudden in the second weekend. In Indiana football is a national champion. That is hard to believe for childhood me.

Speaker 3: Yeah, I have a good one. So my like the second or third game, you know, we're playing the Thunder in the target center and Kevin Durant is off to a tough start. Corey Brewer is guarding him and he's doing a good job. Like Durant missed some shots that he normally makes early on and he misses one and the ball gets knocked out of bounce. I'm sitting next to Gorgy Dane, who ended up having a really good NBA career played at Louisville. We're both rookies at the same time. Gorgy makes the mistake of clapping and yelling good d brew and Durant hears him and this is the clean version, but he goes it wasn't good, d brew it was bad fricking shot. Kevin. I was like, man, that's pretty good. Comeback there. Durant gets the ball. We're up eight points, and he drills a three and stares down the bench the whole way and we missed. They come back down thing. Durant gets the ball, drills another one, so our a point lead is now too and the whole way down he is tractor beam on Gorgy Dang like literally just staring him down. We miss again. They come down, there's like a foul or a ball out of bounds. He comes over and Kevin Durant verbally of viscrates Gorgy. I don't know who you are. I don't know where he played in college. I've never heard of you. You'll I don't know how you'll ever play in this league. And in my mind, and Gorgey's like, you don't want to know me, you don't want like he doesn't know what to say. Jack Sikma is one of our assistant coaches, the legendary Jack Sikma. He's screaming at Gorgy stop talking to Kevin Durant, and I'm like, thank god, I didn't say anything. Durant gets the ball literally step back, fade away, three drills. It beats his chest of man, I'm a bad man. You will ever forget it, And I'm like, oh my god, like this is a whole other level. But then you fast forward like a month and I'm playing and I will never forget this we're I've like moved into the rotation a little bit, and we got some injuries and we've got some real foul trouble. Corey Burwer gets his second file and I remember thinking, like, man, if he gets his third, I think it's I think it's going to be me and he's guarding Durant. And as soon as I thought that literally filed Corey's coming out. I will never forget looking at the floor and Rick Adam and goes, Rob, you got him, and literally I sub in. There's like two and a half minutes to go in the first quarter, and me and Kevin Durant played one on one in front of seventeen thousand of the TI. He started bringing the ball up literally every time clear out ISO. It was like it was horrifying because you're like, dude, it's got seven foot tall, two guard, unbelievable player, Hall of Fame player, top you know, ten, fifteen whatever, and you're just at his mercy. It was terrifying. Is he unguardable? Yeah, because he can get to his pull up whenever he wants, you know, like he's just for whether it's playing pick and roll, getting to the elbows. She would just pull up. He's an incredible player. I love watching Kevin Durant play. I'm such a fan. All right, So what do you force him to do? Well? I followed him on a three. That was a good start, and then I actually got some stops. But Dan, I promise you it was not because it was good decense. He just missed a couple. But the NBA, like everybody is so good, you know, Like, and I've played all over the world. I played in Russia, I played in Italy, I played in Spain. I played two years in the NBA. But like, just the talent level in the NBA for all four hundred and fifty guys is truly remarkable. When you're there.

Speaker 2: Well, you were first team All Big ten what three times?

Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah. But I blow my knee out twice my junior year and came back as a senior, and I certainly was trying to kind of figure my way back physically. And I played my rookie year in Spain and then two years of Minnesota. I played for Georgia Moni's team in Italy, so we had good uniforms, did a lot of milel winning, and then I was I was cut by the Nuggets. I was last cut and I went to Moscow and played the year, which was an adventure in itself.

Speaker 2: What does adventure mean in Moscow?

Speaker 3: Well, there's just corruption. There's just a rampant corruption throughout the games. There's probably some of that, like the officiating. I think teams are trying to avoid. Chesca was like the best team, they have the biggest budget. You know, everybody's trying to avoid Chesca. Really my best overseas European story. Our team had signed Alexi sed who I the reason I went I'm cut by the Nuggets. Alexi was my teammate and I sat with him really on all the planes in Minnesota. We'd sit together the flights and so when I got cut, this team makes me an offer. And Alexi had left and I think it was Philly. He was out of the NBA. He goes back. He's the highest paid player in Europe this year. So I talked to him, how is it. He's like, yeah, it's great. You know, he's living at home, he's the highest big guy and you're up to he's shooting like, you know, twenty times a game, and so for him it's great. And they signed Jacob Polham who if you remember at Kansas State, they got Marco Brown who was in the NBA for the Nets and he was out, and then they brought him in, a guy named EJ. Rowland who played at Saint Mary's, and then Jeremy Evans from the NBA. So they signed all these NBA guys because they're the team had been relegated from euro League to euro Cup. It's kind of like soccer where you're playing in the Russian League, but you're also playing a second game during the week and you're playing in a euro Cup or Earleague game. So the way to get back to euro League is that you have to either win euro Cup, which we don't. We lose in the quarterfinals in Valencia, or you make the finals. So some of the corruption I'm talking about like teams. If you're the four of the five and you've got CHESSCA in the Semis, there's no way you're going to beat them because they've got the biggest budget. They're kind of like the national team of Russia. So we end up playing our first round series inside Iberia. We're the two seat, we're in Siberia. We've sweep them, and then we play in the semifinals, the team from Saint Petersburg five game series. They've got Trevor and Bachway who played at Minnesota, Aaron White who played at Iowa, and some of these guys swear that Game five was fixed. I need to go back and watch and see. But we lose the first two, win the next two. Decisive Game five in Saint Petersburg. Our owner who's like an oligard, comes in the locker room fifty minutes before the game, and at this point I'm like, dude, I'm going to retire if we lose. I don't care because I want to leave so bad. I just I'm over this. I hate being here. I'm ready to go home. Owner comes in the locker room and goes, guys, this is the biggest game in franchise history. You win tonight, I'll pay each of you one hundred thousand US dollars from my safe. And if you win the final two fifty more so. I went from I hope we lose them. We gotta win, like we have to win this game. We end up winning. It's controversial finish. Some of our Russian players who aren't being paid but all that much or like hugging on the court. We won the semis like hugging like we won the NBA Finals. The crazy thing though about this story is that a couple of days later, we have a lunch at the owners. He's got like a twenty story office building in Moscow and he's got a really nice restaurant in the first floor, and the spreads incredible, you're Filet, Mignon, lost or whatever you want, They've they've got it there. And the owner literally says, like Joe, He's kind of like says it laughing, but it's not a Joe. He goes, man. The funny thing is I paid the rest to get a fair whistle. So he admits to bribing the rest, which I'm sure the other team was doing too, And then he points to the corner of the room and he literally says, all right, I got what you guys came from. Let's win the final. We'll do this again. And he lined us up like we were third graders and literally doled out one hundred thousand cash in bags and just handed them and doled them out fifteen times. And literally we all had drivers. My driver was Roman, spoke no English. We could only talk on Google translate. I get in the car and he's like, what's in the back. I'm like, we're gonna get car jacks, all of us. We're gonna get carjacked there. And the craziest thing Dan is that we had to go to practice. So there was one point five million dollars in cash in the locker room. Well, we practiced, and the next year some guy during a game walked in that same locker room and stole everything, wallets, money, watches, everything. So like, luckily he didn't take that day because he would have he would have left with a good haul. But yeah, Russia's there's a lot going on there, a lot going on there.
