It is in Dunedin against the Blue Jays, and they play their Great Fruit League home opener on Sunday against the Pirate here at Bake Care Ballpark. Bryce Wilson is going to be starting on Saturday for the Phillies. The Phillies are going to go with a bullpen game on Sunday and then they head out east to the East coast of Florida for a couple of games. Alan ron Hell will be starting on Monday night.

Speaker 1: But as the games approach, guys right around the corner, I am wondering what you guys are maybe excited to see, nervous about whatever, Like, as games get going, what are you looking forward to?

Speaker 5: Yeah, there's a lot I'm excited to see. But you know I might give you an answer that revolves around my biggest concern about the team, and that's the starting pitching because it lacks depth. We got some really good names in there, obviously, Christopher Sanchez is running up for the cy young his lozarda.

Speaker 5: In his free agent year, and that usually brings a lot of excitement out of guys. But you know, there's no Zach Wheeler to start. I would suspect, you know, early May on him, so we might not see him in games down clear Water. But like I said, the lack of depth in that starting rotation concerns me. You know, knocking on wood that you know you don't want any injuries, but if there's an injury, their depth is going to be severely tested and it could be really difficult for this team to avoid absorb a loss. And health is always them one thing you look for in spring training and any time. But for me a big concern as Aaron Nola didn't look good last year, spent three months on the I l I want to see how he comes back. You mentioned the other day he has been doing more long tossing, had a different kind of winter. I was going to pitch a little bit in the WBC. I think you'll probably get on the mountain before that. I just want to see the life on his pitches. I mean, ordinarily I don't put a ton of stock into into spring training results for pitchers.

Speaker 5: I mean Kevin Millwood always had you know, kind of shaky, lackluster springs, and he seemed to bounce back. I remember talking to Burt Blilb and the Hall of Famer about spring training performances for pitchers, and he didn't put a lot of stock in them, because the guy's you know, working on stuff, try and stuff, experiment and building arm strength. But I want to see what Aaronola looks like, just because he's very, very important, and I think it's really important to the ball club and to him personally, with five years left on his deal, that he bounces back this year. I think we can get a little barometer on all of it here in spring training, just because he needs to be more game ready than other guys.

Speaker 3: But I think the the other things that I and this is probably for later on, the iterations of the lineup are things that are of great interest to me because who is going to protect Bryce Harper.

Can he be that guy, because you know that's a thing. I mean, you don't want to have outs out there when you're platuning guys.

Speaker 3: And is he going to be healthy and is he going to be productive? And then lastly, Adulas Garcia He's a big one for me. What does he bring to the table, What kind of energy does they have? How good is that arm? How good is he in the outfield? And can he provide with a little bit more consistency of the offense that they need in the deeper part of the lineup, and perhaps in the four hole if he really swings to bout well, is he is he going to be an option to hole for Rob Thompson, which would set things up much better. I think by signing a guy.

So I am curious to see what he looks like this spring. I'll tell you what. He came into camp in great shape. I think we might have talked about that the other day as well. The guy is absolutely jacks, if you know.

Hasn't worked out over the last couple of years with those you know, those nine ten million dollars signings, the Keplers of the world, the Merritfields of the world. Hasn't really worked out for them, and you sort of hope that this one does.

Speaker 5: If Boem could slide to six, the view on him as an offensive player would be totally different, because that's really where he belongs in an ideal line up. I mean, they have to hit him there because he's a contact guy and they just don't have another four guy. But if Adolas Garcia could be that guy, it would be so good, you know, for this team. I want to ask you a question at Rubin, you know, as former GM, given the way this winter has gone and the narrative out there with Harper, you know about protection behind Harper, him talking about it, his agent talking about it, would you feel a lot of pressure to get Kyle Schwarber there no if ans or butts behind him, whether it's you know, three or four wherever. Would you feel pressure to put Kyle Schwarber in that spot to the point where I think it's not even a thought. I think he's going to be behind Harper automatically.

I want to talk more about the three prospects that are in camp justin Crawford, Aiden Miller, Andrew painter and kind of what we want to see from them this spring as well. You know, I had a nice chat the other day with Aiden Miller. Really, all three guys, I mean all three guys, I think if they live up to their potential, I think Phillies fans are really gonna like them.

He goes, Oh yes, oh yes, He's like he loves to bunt. He loves to bunt. He really thinks it's a weapon. He really wants to get better at it. He's been out.

It's back to where it was. And Rob Thompson has been absolutely raving about his control and command coming back.

Speaker 3: You enough the importance of the instruction that they're getting from these coaches. This is not a knock on the development people, because they have very good development people there. But when you have the major league coaching staff, the Paco Figueroas and the Dickersons and those types of people around these players.

Speaker 3: They know what it takes to have success at the major league level for a championship caliber club, and for them to get the instruction from them during the course of this time, whether they're in the big leagues or whether they're in the minor leagues, those are invaluable pieces of information that they're going to gain and they're going to get better just by being there for the next month and a half and getting that work. So I also mentioned Painter because it already seems like he's already made an adjustment himself by changing a little bit of his delivery, and now it seems like he's throwing a little bit more consistently in the strike zone, which is the most important part.

Speaker 3: Man, that takes some time for him to develop the consistency of the delivery so that you can command the strike zone. I think all of these things that are happening for these guys in the spring training are the most fascinating parts of whether or not you see this translate to game now, not just right away necessarily, but to games somewhere in the next ten to fifteen games you start seeing these guys play and whether the skill set that they're working on continues to improve and makes their game better.

Speaker 5: A good organization is always sustaining itself with homegrown talent, and you know that's tough to do, but it's something The Phillies need to do. Everybody can't be the Dodgers. You got a need sign another three hundred million dollar players, though the Phillies have done some of that. But it's very, very exciting when young talent is coming in spring training. People kind of buzz about it. People are eager to see it.

Speaker 5: The atmosphere and spring training is very upbeat, you know, because the regular season hadn't started yet. It's not that cauldron that you have to, you know, win every night. You can actually sit back and enjoy watching the kid develop. So I remember the excitement when a young player like Jimmy Rollins arrived. I remember watching Jimmy Rollins over in winter Haven one day go in the hole, you know, his first camp, big league camp.

Speaker 6: He was going to go to Triple A, but you know, they sent him on the road trip.

Speaker 5: And he went in the hole and he jacked up off his back foot and got up on top of the ball, got a little.

Speaker 5: I was like, oh, my goodness, exciting to see young Jimmy Rollins, Exciting to see Chase Suttley, exciting to see Ryan Howard, Exciting that one spring when Dominic Brown all those home runs, exciting when Cole Hills went over to the Legends field and sat down all those guys. So we're seeing three guys that could be main stays in this lineup that need to be main stays really at their formative years and their first real serious spring training uh in a in a year when two of them are probably are going to contribute right out of the gate and another one maybe not too far down the road. I think he needs a little more time Aden Miller though, But that in itself is exciting for baseball fans, and we are baseball fans. We're gonna enjoy watching it. And you know, it's just another added element to, you know, to spring training this year. And they're important guys. You know, I'm not gonna go overboard if they play extremely well. I'm not gonna go overboard if they if they don't play extremely well, because the talent is there on all three guys need to They need to go out there and feel like they belong and just let it happen.

Later on to the last maybe ten twelve days of spring is when you really bear down on evaluating their ability to get results right now.

Right you, know how often on a called third strike or you, know a three to one pitch that's do you think is a ball that's called a? Strike how often are you do you go back to the dugout and go, YEP i knew? It versus how much do you how many times you go back on the dugout and go?

Plate he says he has some difficulty with the like the knee high pitches or maybe at the, top top half or top part of the. Zone so he knows going forward this, year if it's a borderline pitch and it's on the inner half of the plate of the outer half of the plate and he wants to challenge, it he'll feel pretty good about.

It challenges are done the rest of the game you're, Out so you, know you wonder if it's gonna be like, Listen Harper, schwarberg these guys have the green lights you, know maybe a Justin, crawford you, know at the guys at the bottom line of don't unless it's later in the, game and it's a real key spot in the.
