Braves Bats Deliver in the Desert

It truly is the start to the weekend, depending on where you are watching right now. We are currently recording this literally going from Friday into Saturday, already Saturday on the East Coast, right at the midnight hour Central time. That's what you do when it comes to playing West Coast baseball and covering the Atlanta Braves. And there's hardly anybody better, maybe nobody better at doing that. Exact things about podcast partner Stephen Tolbert Steven. Good talking with you, man, it seems like that, Hey, we're sitting here covering vic after victory. Now, not gonna die, You're not going would not gonna get my hopes up too much. But good talk with you, sir, especially after some victories added up for the Braves.

Speaker 2: Yeah, what's up, buddy, Yeah, it's listen. We knew tonight was gonna be a late night for us. We knew we're gonna do a podcast after the game. It was probably gonna be close to one am Eastern time. It's just so much easier to do after a win. You know, if they had lost this game, like twelve to two, uh, this would have been about a six minute podcast and five of them would have been ads. So yeah, good win. You know, Chris Sale we're gonna talk about here in a minute, looked okay, still not fully there with his command, but often stepped up, you know, bullpen stepped up. I guess the good team on the road. Braves have not played well against West Coast teams. Obviously they're zero to seven coming into the game. Now they're one and seven. So yeah, good, good win, very good win to start off the road trip and hopefully more to come.

Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think that, you know, sail is a good place to start because, you know, we talked about how the theme of this season so far the last time we talked about it is that it seemed like that the concern for this team was kind of shifting from scoring runs to run prevention, and that's kind of what Sale was doing tonight. He was working through it, but he did work through it to at least put together a decent start. Five innings pitched over one hundred pitches. Certainly struggled to get through those five innings that's kind of been the theme of his season so far. A bit of a rough start, but was able to work out of jams. The velocity was still there. But as you mentioned, if there is a bit of a concern, even though it was a successful start for Chris Sale, it's that the command is not there. The command just has not been there for much of the season. But the good thing tonight, especially against one of the better lineups he's faced, he was able to work through it, keep the runs off the board, and that was really well you know, positioned to couple with the fact that Brays had some early success to gives Sale not only the ability to with runs to work with, but the eventual victory as well.

Speaker 2: Yeah, listen, he gave a one run against one of the best lineups in baseball and one of the best hitters parks in baseball. So like you have to start there. It's a good start. It just he went five innings again, and he hasn't you know, Chris Sale has not seen the sixth inning yet this season, and so you know that's gonna be kind of a focus, especially now that the Braves don't have Strider, they don't have Ronaldo, you know, they've got these two young guys or not young elders, not young, but they've got these two inconsistent guys in the back half of the rotation. They need their We talked about this on our last show. They need those. They need their horses to be horses and pitched like, you know, deeper into games. So that's that's kind of the one thing left is getting sale into the sixth seventh inning of games, like we saw so many times last year, and it's just command. He's not he's not able to put guys away efficiently right now because he can't command pitches. You know, he either misses a foot off the player, he misses right down middle. So I you know, the stuff is good, and that's kind of what I was worried about earlier, is when the stuff looked like it dropped off a little bit. That's not the case. You know, he's still throwing ninety five, ninety six, ninety seven. Stuff looks good. He just couldn't command it as well tonight, and that's why his pitch count got up. I did think his best inning was his last inning, where he looked like he kind of got feel for the slider, feel for the fastball. The only problem was he'd already thrown one hundred pitches by that point, so they had no choice but to take him out. He just has to find his command a little earlier in games so that we can get him to the sixth and seventh inning. But again, you give him one run against this lineup in that in that ballpark, that's pretty damn good. And you know, I know he danced in and out of trouble a lot, but he made big pitches. You know, the Braves did get some luck. There was a couple of balls that were you know, home runs that were foul by you know, a foot one way or the other, and it kind of went the Braves way tonight. But yeah, it was a it was one of sales better starts of the year. We just got to get him deeper into the game.

Speaker 1: The other thing that certainly stands out was that, you know, after you know, the one loss of the home stand that occurred, that was you know, much on the bullpen. You know, that ten to four loss to the Cardinals. It was good to see the bullpen also have a successful night again on the road against the quality team that has been the struggle of this bullpen so far, and they did their job, you know, just a job has had a bit of a rough outing, but you know, Dyla Santos came in, he did well, But Dylan Lee and Aaron Bumber both had very good outings. And the thing that I think that stands out for this Brave squad is that Dylan Lee has not been his normal self to start the season. Aaron Bumber had some success, you know, kind of been up and down at times. But if the Braves can get those two going, you know, you could arguably say those are clearly two of their four best relievers. But if they can get those two going, especially from the less side of the plate, that could be huge. And if they can become and get reliable back in options, that could be really good as well. Give them the batle Rice sell Igalacias a good night for the Brace bullpen when it was needed.

Speaker 2: Yeah. I still can't quite figure out Aaron Bummer's role on the team. I really haven't for like two years now. I don't know why he's pitching in the ninth inning of an eight to two game, especially when you have guys like you know, Montero and blew It on the in the bullpen. But yeah, the Braves need those two guys and Dylan Lee specifically, and listen, Dylan Leek was another guy who came with it in about an inch from giving up a two run homer to Corbyn Carroll. But you know it went his way tonight, so he's been leaving the slider in the middle of the plate a little too much. He made some much better pitches after that ball went foul. So yeah, Dylan Leave's a big part of this. I still think the Braves need another right handed option. I know kick correct Trumble is gonna be up sooner rather than later. But you know, Day's Bell has been good, Rossielle has been shaky, Pierce is good. I would love one more. And if you had, if you could go Bummer Lee, Day's Bell, Pierce Johnson, one more high leverage reliever and then rosiel I would feel much better about the pen. But yeah, I still have questions about this unit. But they had a good night tonight. You know, Chavez gave up a couple of runs, or he gave up one run, but you know it was kind of mop up duty at that point, so they had a good night tonight. The offense helped a lot by just keep adding on runs. But yeah, two runs against that lineup in that ballpark, that's that's pretty good run prevention.

Speaker 1: And the other thing I'll add is this is, you know, not much analysis probably needed, but Steve, the one thing that we're consistently seeing from this Brave squad now is that they are winning the starting game of the series. I believe now, what this is their eighth series of the year. I think they've won like four out of six, five out of the seven when it comes to their series opener. The Marlins as well as the Phillies, now the Twins, the Cardinals, as well as the Diamondbacks. They're doing a good job of winning these series openers. And that's what we talked about right coming off that open to seven start to the season. If you could just win series, not necessarily every game in a row, but just win series. The best way to do that is win the series opener. But now you're not. I only seeing them consistently when the series opener. They've now won six out of seven. This Brave team is starting to get on a roll, and they're playing like a team that's looking to find ways to win instead of expecting ways to lose.

Speaker 2: Yeah, they've gotten their confidence back. I think I think when you start oh and seven, like even the most confident, accomplished players, it's a I mean, it's a kick in the nuts. It's it's it takes it. I think it knocks you back. I think it reels you a little bit. And you know, the Braves kind of looked like a team that was just hoping to win for a couple of weeks after that and seven start and now they're just had you know, the it bats with runners in scoring positions. We're gona talk about the offense here in a second, but nobody looks nearly as tight as they did three weeks ago, when every at bat just seemed like the world was ending, and everybody who was gripping the bat as hard as they could and throwing every pitch as hard as they could because everybody was trying to win six games and won at bat. You know, see is you know everybody is much more relaxed at the plate. You know, Sean Murphy has come back and has energized the lineup. Verdugo has done the same thing. Marcel has been on base basically half the time. You know, Riley and Olsen both started hitting better. It just all kind of came and and you know, the whole team just looks more comfortable. And obviously winning helps, but there's just not as much pressure on every single pitch as there was. You know, when you start zero and seven, it's just natural. So yeah, it's good to see. I guess the good team a very good team. The Diamondbacks are a really good team at their place in a in a really good offensive park. So that's a great win. That's a really good win tonight.

Speaker 1: Stephen, we talk about, you know how good of a hitter's park Chasefield is in the Diamondbacks or in Arizona where the Diamondbacks play, And there's not many teams who have found more fun playing in Arizona than the Atlanta Breys. If you go back, you know, really, since the Diamondbacks. Well, we'll go back to two thousand, only the Cardinals since two thousand, of all National League teams have a better OPS. But over the past decade, no team is a joy were playing in Arizona more than the Braves coming into the night's game across thirty games and a twenty one OPS over the past decade for the Braves in Chase Field, the Nationals are the only other team at a NATO three OPS that are even close to the Braves. So there's no team that enjoys playing in Atlanta more than the Braves. But tonight, Steven it was a different story. We talked about how power had kind of come back into the picture for the Braves. It was good to see. You need to have power to win consistently. But tonight it was timely hitting six or thirteen with runners in scoring position. It was the bottom of the order that was producing well, and it was speed, a lot of you know, really you know, well placed hits where our runners got the extra base. Some unexpected elements of this Brase offense showed up tonight, and again it's just solidifying the Braves offense being able to win in multiple ways. That was really good to see against a quality opponent on the road.

Speaker 2: Yeah, the Braves have really done well in Arizona. You know those those I think it was back to back years. The Braves were not playing well for like the first two months, and then it kind of broke where the Braves were playing in Arizona at the end of May, like two years in a row, and both times they won the series, and that like jump started them for the rest of the year. And so yeah, they've played well like any of Reds. I remember Editors Alread hit that Grand Slam in the ninth inning a couple of years ago. So yeah, they usually have pretty good results. Austin Riley destroys the ball in Arizona. I think it's I think it's its highest ops park, and so yeah, you know, they typically do pretty well. I know Ronald has hit some absolute tape measure shots in Arizona, so it's good to say no homers tonight. But you know, one thing I was thinking while I was watching the game. You know when when Michael Harris and Nick Allen and Eli White are all in the game, all of a sudden, this lineup is not like the slow, unathletic bunch that we're used to like, they actually have some speed on the bait, and you saw that today. I mean, there was no homers. There's a lot of small balls, a lot of you know, first to third, second home, you know, single double runner and scoring position stuff we're not used to seeing with the Braves, and of course Eli White. We're gonna talk about Eli White here in a minute, but another big game. But yeah, it's just another facet of the game. We don't see a lot from this team. And again that's one benefit of having Alan and White both in the lineup is that at least you do have speed. You know. I don't think either one of those guys are going to be like silver sluggers at their position or anything, but if they do somehow find themselves on base, they can make something happen. You know, we saw it the other day with Nick Allen scoring on a ball that Orlando Asio might not even got into third on. So yeah, it's good to see the speed, good to see hits with runners in scoring positions, and scoring eight runs without a single homer doesn't happen a lot for this group. So and you know, scoring eight runs also helps your bullpit because now you don't have to use your high leverage guys, even though they still used Aaron Bummer in the ninth which made me laugh. But yeah, good night for the offense. Good to see some hits with runners to score, positioning, guys going first to third, some speed, you know, stuff we're not used to seeing from this group.

Speaker 1: And I think another way to describe this offense so far this year, Steven, is that you can honestly say, you know, they've been an elite offense since they returned home after that to seven start for the year. But they're doing it against quality pitching tonight against Zach Gallon once again. Again, if you look at this team against former All Stars, former pitchers who won Cy Young's or finished high in the Cy Young voting, they're getting it done against quality pitching. And if there's one aspect of this team where you're like, hey, they can do what they need to do to win at the clip that they need to win in order to really get back into this thing, to get back going in the right direction, it's their performance against quality pitching that was really good to see and it's going to be important for them to continue on as the rest of the series plays out.

Speaker 2: Yeah, it was obviously Zach Gallon tonight. It was a Gallon versus Sale, and Gallen settled in. I think he I think he retired like ten or eleven in a row at one point, but he didn't have his good command tonight. The strike zone tonight was just absurd, Phil because he was behind the plate and the whole umpiring crew I think was half drunk in this game because there was multiple calls that just made no sense that got overturned immediately. But yeah, I didn't think Gallen had his best off. Gallon has not gotten off to a good start. I think he has an ERA over like six in April. But yeah, they were very patient. There was a million pitches thrown in this game. There was over one hundred pitches thrown by the two pitchers in the first two innings, a lot of long at bats, a lot of three two counts. The Braids did a really good job, like we've talked about a second ago, working the count, getting on base, taking in the extra base, getting hits with the runners of his scoring position. You know, got Gallen's pitch count up. They got into the bullpen early and made him pay. And then the one the biggest weakness of the Diamondbacks as their bullpen. Their bullpen is not good at all. So if you can do that, if you can get to the bullpen by the fifth inning, you have a very good chance of winning. So that was huge and big part of the win, and that's a recipe for successful the next two games. Work the count, get into the bullpen, and try to make some pay against what is easily the weakest part of the Diamondbacks.

Speaker 1: Absolutely, and looking at you know, the continued performance of Austin Riley. You know, Steven, we talked about it a couple of weeks ago. We were really talking about how Austin Riley he needed to get going. This team just was not in a spot to where he could get off to a slow start. And there's no better way for it, no better place for him to continue doing what he's doing. You talked about the fact that he loves hitting in Arizona. Well, here's a couple of numbers for you. Of all the parks that Austin Riley has hit in in his career, Arizona is his favorite place to hit. Coming into tonight, sixty three played appearances. You want to guess his ops coming into tonight in Arizona in his career, Stephen.

Speaker 2: I looked this up last year at one point because I was curious. I swear it was at one point it was like a eleven hundred ops SOT one point.

Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a twelve forty ops before tonight since twenty nineteen, when Austin Riley came into the league, Of all the players that have had as opponents in Arizona at least fifty a plate plate appearances in Arizona since twenty nineteen, Riley has the highest OPS at twelve forty coming in tonight. The second highest Freddy Freeman at eleven three. So literally, no one hits better as an opponent in Arizona than Austin Riley. But in the overall grand scheme of things, he's doing it with power. He's doing it with Runderson's scoring position. It seems like every bat now that Austin Riley is coming up at the plate in a big moment, he's delivering and that consistency is exactly what this Braves team needs.

Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's one of the men guys I'm talking about, and I say not every at bat seems like life or death anymore like it did three weeks ago, where it just looked like he was he was trying to hit a grand Slam every at bat, even if there was nobody on base, and you just can't play baseball that way. And he was swinging at pitches that he hasn't swung at since he was a rookie, and you could just tell, like when you see Austin going back to like his twenty nineteen rookie mode where he's swinging at every slider off foot off the plate, you know he's pressing because he cured that. He cured a lot of that, and now we're back to seeing what Austin rally really is, which is an elite hitter. His bat at ball stuff is ridiculous. His bat's you know, his swing speed, his ex of velocity, all that stuff is still ridiculous. He's just an elite hitter. And I think he had to get out of his own way a little bit, and that's what we're seeing. And that comes with having some success, you're not pressing as much. He had that big stretch where he had like a ten game hitting streak or something like that. I think that calmed him down and now We're seeing the real Austin Riley and that helps tremendously obviously.

Speaker 1: Absolutely, And you know, we talk about you know, we talked about Austin Riley a few times when it comes to our Fandel Sports Network Player spotlight. But one player that I didn't think we would talk about in this segment of the show, especially this early in the season, is one Eli White, but he certainly deserves it. Steven we talked also, We've talked multiple times about how this Braves bench seems to be a bit more versatile, a bit more you know, able to be utilized in the right spots.

Speaker 1: But then you know previous years and Eli White has stood out over the past couple of games, and shout out to him someone that came into this spring training who really showed out, showed his versatility by performing at different positions. We haven't really seen that versatility as a utility player so far, but he has been a defensive replacement and now is getting a bit more playing time. And if Eli White come in and swing the bat, well, you ad his speed, you add his defense, the ability to play multiple positions, there's opportunity there. But he showed up big and two straight victories for this Braves team. Really good to see how he's performed. He helps the bottom of the order, helps to add that speed element to this offense. Just a player who can add value in a lot of different ways. And it's shown over the past couple of games.

Speaker 2: Yeah, listen, five RBI in the last two games and the Braid. You know, obviously in the last game against Saint Louis, the big three run homer to basically win the game. They got him going tonight with a double down the line that knocked in Michael Harris. You know, I tweeted this out. But he's got five RBI in his last five plate appearances. Jared Keelnick and Orlando Arcia combined all season have three RBI. So he has more RBI in the last five plate appearances than those two guys have all seasons. And so it's just literally he's done more in the last two games than the Braids have been getting out of that spot all year. And you know, you and I talked about this, like they need these other guys to have little moments where they can help, you know, they don't. You know, nobody expects Eli White to carry the team for a month, but having a game or even like a couple of games or a week where you're you're productive and you're helping out, you know, you stack those up over the season. It adds up. And the last two games are a perfect example of that of a guy you're not expecting coming through with some big hits. And listen, he's got tools. He's a really fast runner, He's kind of the bravest pinch runner guy. He's a really good defenders. He can play center, so when he's in right field, he's a plus defensive right fielder. And he's got a little pop in his bat. We saw that home run he hit the other night was like four hundred and thirty feet. He's got a little pop. I don't think he's a good hitter. Listen. I don't think Eli White's going to turn into some magically great hitter at thirty one years old. So I wouldn't expect this for the long haul, but again, you don't need it for the long haul. Just having these little moments where you help win games out of nowhere is so valuable and so credit to him. Man. I know he's been a journeyman. He's never really been able to establish himself as a major league player. You know, they were talking about him being with his kids and his wife and having them enjoy this ride. There's a whole human side of this stuff that we never talk about that's pretty incredible. From all everything I've ever read or heard about him, he's a tremendous dude. He's a great teammate. His teammates love him. You could tell by the way they reacted after he hit that homer how much they love him. So great, great for him. I'm so happy for him, and it helps the team a lot to have these moments where guys unexpectedly produce and help win games, and that stuff adds up over a long season.

Speaker 1: At the risk of not sounding blasphemous, let's look at this journeyman, great dude coming up in big moment for the Braves and you know, showing that you know, he has more value than you might expect. Plus a good defender, Like is he worthy enough to where if we found him a couple of pink swords we could put those in his hands, Like could he carry on the tradition of Gerramo Horadia or at least be mentioned in the same breath as Charlie Colberson. Speaker 1: Again, Stephen, we talked about, you know, this stretch for the Braves coming off, you know, the the series struggle that they had had. You know, they had that big series win over the Phillies. They did down a bit after that, but again the Twins series, the Cardinals series. Now going into this series against the Diamondbacks, Listen, you need a series win, like if you can just get a series win here, you know, the Braves are now eleven and fourteen. If you can get a series win, you can go into Colorado three games under five hundred. That potentially puts you in a good spot to be one or two games under five hundred Indian April, and before you start a series to start May against the Dodgers. My point that I'm getting that Steven, is that the Braves have bought themselves an opportunity winning six out of seven to really be in a good spot dig themselves out of that hole before the end of April. Right now, Right now was the time last year where we went from doing really well to struggling and it lasted for the end of the season. What if we reverse that what if we did a one eighty. We've struggled so far this year, what if right now we turn it back on and do the reverse get going again. The Braves need to keep the moment of going, especially against quality team like Arizona.

Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean they've almost dug themselves out of this hole. Like you said, they're eleven and fourteen, They've won what six out of the last seven games. If you can win one more of this series and like you said, go into a very I mean Colorado. I don't want to say this because then the Braids are going to get swept. But like Colorado is as bad as the White Sox were last year. Now, Braves fans will remember the Braves lost the series to the White Sox last year. So I still got my don't you bring it up again. I know, I know, it's it's terrible. Garrett Crochet was one of those losses, so that's not as bad. But so I've still got my guard up. But if you win this series against Arizona and you can go into Colorado, you know, now you're only two games under five hundred. I mean, if you take care of business in Colorado, you could actually come home at five hundred, you know, and I know you got the Dodgers waiting on you when you get home. But like, if you had told me when the Braves were zero and seven to start the year that they could by the beginning of may be back at five hundred, I would have taken that in a heartbeat. I mean anybody would have. So it's so good to win the first one. I don't want to have the letdown that they did in Toronto though, where they won the first game and then they got beat the last two and it just felt like more misery. You know, you got homes of swallow back. You got your three best pitchers going in this series right now, sale homes of swallowen back. You just need one and you miss Corbyn Burns. Arizona's bullpen is not good. You just need one game to win this series. And so yeah, it's a big it's a big deal. It'd be awesome to win tomorrow and then actually be able to go for a sweep, but we're not gonna get greedy. Just win one of the next two and going to Colorado with a chance to basically get back to five hundred. That's all you can ask for. And it's gonna take you know, schwellenback in homes pitching. Well, the offense needs to keep going eight runs and this ballpark is like five runs and other ballparks, so like keep going, you know, pop, some homers, keep getting some hits with runners in score position, and let's just keep it rolling. Let's keep it rolling. We don't need one of these letdown things where we score one run and get two hits. Just keep it rolling, and if they handle business, before you know it, you're going to look up. This team is either at or maybe even above five hundred.

Speaker 1: Yeah, we talked about it in the last podcast. You know, we talked about the fact that there are you know, basically six you know, the three teams in the West, three teams in the East, you know, plus the Cubs or whoever emerges from the Central. You know, six of those seven squads are probably you know, six of those seven squads are likely going to make the playoffs for the nail. One's going to be left out. The brains are creeping on up to be in that conversation, and it's great to see. Want to shout out Alex Berdugo as well. Another big hit tonight. He's doing his job at the top of the order again, Stephen, we talked about it. Outside of those big four, the rest of the lineup is stepping up, and when they do, this team can really match offensive production against only any team out there in baseball. We're coming up on our one year anniversary of being with Foul Territory. We started last May at the beginning of last May. Obviously we're coming up. It's been an incredible first year. Really has kind of exceeded my expectations in a lot of ways. Especially the last like three months have been truly incredible. So shout out to you guys. We will be here rain or shine, East Coast, West Coast, one am, ten pm, whatever it is, We're gonna be here, and we appreciate the support because it's it really has been tremendous over the last year. You got the NBA Playoffs going, though I know that there may not be many teams in Braves Country, many members of Braves Country whose teams are still in the playoffs, but at least you're still enjoying that.
