Stacy and Clinton Break Down the Style of When Harry Met Sally

[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, you said why don't we do when Harry met Sally?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we should do classic movies, I said.

[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I hate romp comes too.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, then what are you doing?
[SPEAKER_01]: Telling me that I should be the one to watch when Harry Met Sally for us and discuss.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, all right.
[SPEAKER_00]: I have to start this episode off with an apology.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, great.
[SPEAKER_00]: Cause turns out I'm not sure I've been seeing this movie.
[SPEAKER_02]: When Harry Met Sally intense scenes.
[SPEAKER_01]: But when Harry Medcelli was written by Nora Efron, and it was directed by Rob Reiner, it's starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was made in 1989, and I think what I realized watching this movie is that the dialogue is so good that there is no way the costumes could compare.
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, that is not to say it's not a great costume design, and I actually don't remember who designed the costumes.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, Gloria Gresham designed the costumes for when Harry Medcelli.
[SPEAKER_01]: But what I think is that one is about like real people from 1977 until 1989, exactly 12, over 12 years.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it really does span again, what your wardrobe might change from graduating to college to being in your mid-30s.
[SPEAKER_01]: at that time span.
[SPEAKER_01]: It is very typical of what we saw.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think for that reason, it's worth just taking this stroll down memory lane to talk about some of the things that were big trends back in 1989.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's just watch this hetero-normative classic, shall we?
[SPEAKER_01]: So here we are.
[SPEAKER_01]: We open this there.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's 1977.
[SPEAKER_01]: We are leading the University of Chicago.
[SPEAKER_01]: The first time that Harry and Sally meet, they meet when they are taking a 16 hour drive to New York City together.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're there going to start their lives totally separately.
[SPEAKER_01]: They have a friend in common who is his girlfriend, her friend.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they get in the car and they immediately dislike each other.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god, I forgot that that's the way people used to commute back and forth in college to home.
[SPEAKER_00]: You would get a ride with somebody you barely knew.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you barely knew.
[SPEAKER_01]: And you would look for it on a bulletin board.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they'd drive an ally.
[SPEAKER_00]: I totally fucking forgot about part of my French.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why I'm cursing up a storm.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm also, why are we partying in your French when you curse up a storm?
[SPEAKER_01]: All done.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry, but yes, I remember that you put your life in somebody else's hands, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: So let's go to the diner.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, they're talking about their lives.
[SPEAKER_01]: I find this movie to be a Harry Monologue.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, he's basically always telling her why we went men and women can't be friends.
[SPEAKER_01]: They can't be friends because they're always the sex part, and even when they say they don't want to have sex, they actually do.
[SPEAKER_01]: They even want to nail their friends who are unattracted, blah, blah, blah goes on and on.
[SPEAKER_01]: find.
[SPEAKER_01]: So men and women can't be friends.
[SPEAKER_01]: They get to the diner.
[SPEAKER_01]: He is wearing a sweatshirt zip-up gray hoodie with jeans, G, is wearing something much more preppy.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think for 1977 this looks like the beginning of the Aquanette Yuppie.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, but I feel like that hairstyle that she has right there is the hairstyle from every All 70s horror movie exactly Halloween everything so she's a little you know outdated in terms of the hairstyle Right, but the clothing I think is moving towards what becomes in a few years even more yuppie than this Okay, well, I hope it starts to fit better as we go along because I feel like everything is a half a size too big on her Well, every she's tiny she's tiny, but they make tiny clothes.
[SPEAKER_00]: I got a tailor
[SPEAKER_01]: But I do feel like this is also part of the character, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: She gets like more fashion savvy as the movie goes on.
[SPEAKER_01]: But here we've got a navy cardigan, a yellow, Oxford, a button front shirt, a vermuda short in cacky and a knee high in navy.
[SPEAKER_00]: I got to say, the knee highs my favorite part of this look.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's mine too.
[SPEAKER_01]: I've got to be honest.
[SPEAKER_01]: I actually think it really works.
[SPEAKER_00]: The world needs more knee highs with shorts.
[SPEAKER_01]: Scene number two.
[SPEAKER_01]: Another five years goes by.
[SPEAKER_01]: We are in 1982.
[SPEAKER_01]: Harry is in the airport walking to catch a plane and who does he see?
[SPEAKER_01]: a woman kissing a man and he knows the gentleman and says, Joe, I recognize you and then we see Sally with a new hair kind of a whole new vibe.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I actually think this hair and makeup and this hair is she gets it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I really love the way the little silk tie.
[SPEAKER_00]: What does she have?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so that's a little silk tie.
[SPEAKER_00]: The color is really doing wonderful things for her eyes.
[SPEAKER_01]: agreed and that little splash of burgundy is in the plaid of the jacket so there's like a nice cohesion there also interesting is wearing a burgundy touch she coordinates with him of course that was a really big thing the yuppies remember the yuppies they really weren't my grandmother used to be like they're so cute they're like baby poodles
[SPEAKER_00]: Yuppies were, I wanted to be a Yuppie so bad.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's funny.
[SPEAKER_01]: I could see that for you, but I'm so glad it didn't happen.
[SPEAKER_02]: Scene number three.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is taken at the Central Park Boat House.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is the girls getting together for the first time Carrie Fisher.
[SPEAKER_01]: If you rest, I wanted just to talk about the collar less power jacket, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: This is it.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I feel like the integration of the shoulder pad on her jacket could have been done a little bit better.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's there, not only mean, like it's just so obviously a shoulder pad, I feel like it could have been blended down the arm.
[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's also like it doesn't have a button.
[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't, you know, the whole look is kind of off.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a terrible color.
[SPEAKER_00]: I like um Sally's little jacket here.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm going to say that I'm sure in 1989 we thought this was fresh and new, but it feels so mature for somebody who's supposed to be in their early nerdy scene number four.

[SPEAKER_01]: And this is when they become friends.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so let's just talk about the denim of the late 80s.

[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, okay, great.
[SPEAKER_01]: So now we know men and women can be friends.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is another day that they're walking in the park this outfit, however, on Asalee did not age well.

[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you know, in all of these movies that we've watched from the 80s, the bridal situation is beyond horror.

[SPEAKER_01]: But you know what, I understand now why the 90s became so minimal because the 80s were so maximum.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, there was volume in all of the clothing, no matter what you did, there was volume, there was the shoulder pads, the big sleeves, the big collars, everything was big.

[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, this is at the wedding.
[SPEAKER_01]: She is wearing an emerald green velvet, sweetheart, short-sleeved dress.
[SPEAKER_00]: Literally, every wedding that took place in the winter from the year of 1987 to 1986 to 1992, especially at winter wedding, you put all of your bridesmaids in that shade of green and that's a lot of dress.

[SPEAKER_01]: He has to realize that he's actually in love with her and doesn't just want to be her friend.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, all right.
[SPEAKER_01]: Which is what happens on this third New Year's Eve.

[SPEAKER_00]: Well, she should first take off your dancing with because he was hot.
[SPEAKER_01]: She's wearing that strapless blue velvet dress with again to me.

[SPEAKER_00]: I look back at my even high school photos.
[SPEAKER_00]: I had a high forehead and of course I've lost a little here.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I used to feel a little bit bad about it, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: But then I realized I have the same hairline as my pop did, okay?
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's my mother's father.
[SPEAKER_00]: And he was the happiest man in the world and everybody loved him.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, if my pop who's got the same hairline could be the happiest person in the world, and everybody left them, why am I so concerned about filling in my hair?
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, why can't I be the happiest person in the world in hairline?
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you're certainly the luckiest.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm the luckiest.
[SPEAKER_00]: I tattooed it on my chest.
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so that's why I decided not to get a hair transplant, you know, I know, I'm not against procedures.
[SPEAKER_00]: As you know, I have plenty.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'll talk about it all the day.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I really like the fact that that's that's the reason for you not feeling insecure is to be able to look at somebody who you loved and.
[SPEAKER_01]: you know related to you who you admire so much that that could actually change your own opinion or own insecurity about something you don't have any reason to be insecure about the first place.
[SPEAKER_00]: It just puts it in perspective like that's where all games so hyper concerned about our appearance when
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I get it.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're not.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're human beings.
[SPEAKER_00]: We want to look attractive to other human beings because it helps us get stuff that we want.
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but at a certain point you have to say, like, why am I doing this?
[SPEAKER_00]: Am I doing this for myself?
[SPEAKER_00]: Really?
[SPEAKER_00]: Am I doing this to be happy?
[SPEAKER_00]: Really?
[SPEAKER_00]: Or am I doing this to make other people happy?
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, in the case of Harry and Sally.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think they ever thought about what they wore once when they hung out together.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think they planned it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think they worried about it because they were never trying to pretend to be some of the things that they weren't.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he even says to Bruno Kirby's character in the movie, I love having a woman's perspective.
[SPEAKER_01]: I can talk to her about the women that I date and get her perspective.
[SPEAKER_01]: And you really understand that there is like,
[SPEAKER_01]: a deep bond between them and the way that they are sort of they look together by the end of the movie looks like they belong together.
[SPEAKER_01]: Final thought.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.

[SPEAKER_01]: But the costume design again, a little bit like some movies that we watch, which is really meant to kind of melt into the story.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's very apropos of 77, 82 and 89.
[SPEAKER_01]: We didn't see anything that we haven't seen in our own real lives.
[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't, you know, it was New York City.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it looks like it was the late 80s.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's what people were wearing.
[SPEAKER_00]: So did you rate the costume design?
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to give it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to get it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I know, you're going to give it that man gene.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, I'm going to give it three out of four labial folds.
