Hey, everybody, the Phillies did it. Magic number is now zero. They have clinched their second consecutive National League East title. Let's talk about it. It's time for the park's first pitch. Take you take me back to when you know, when you're in the front office and when you're playing, and the nerves were in my stomach, you know, especially uh in a in that last inning with Doron on the on the mound and then he hangs at breaking ball, and you're like, you know, your heart sort of sinks, but it was just an amazing game.

Speaker 4: Really happy for West and Wilson, who comes through in a huge way, gets an opportunity to to play second base on the clinching game. And the man makes a hell of a play with a man on third, two outs so that the so that the Dodgers cannot go up I think it was in the eighth inning or ninth inning, makes a really tough play on a bouncer up the middle, and uh, and then.

Speaker 4: I mean he blasted it to the left the left center otto camp with a couple of major extra base hits. I mean, these guys so fun to watch, these guys contributing. That's what you need for a championship team. You need other people to step up. And then finally Bryce Arper smoking a home run against a tough left hander in a tough situation. So you had the big boys coming through with Schwarbur and Harper. You had the you know, the guys who were sort of afterthought type players, bench players who were getting opportunities and doing some great things. And it was just an all round amazing game against a very good team who's playing well right now and super way to clinch Man.

Speaker 5: I was twenty five hundred miles away, but it was exciting jumping through my TV set. I was really happy for Weston Wilson. Good guy. And what a beautiful swing that was. I mean, it was a swing to behold. He just got through that ball. And you mentioned Schwarber and you mentioned Harper. It was a complete effort and it kind of epitomized how this team has been really for a couple of years that you know, they get banged up, they get nice contributions from the guys in Lehigh Valley. It's kind of it's kind of funny. We thought all year long we'd see Crawford and Painter and they'd make contributions. But it's more like guys like Otto Kampen and Weston Wilson. You know, Lazarre has had some moments so and I thought it was really cool Rob recognized all those guys in his post game toast. He doesn't miss a trick when it comes to handing out credit. I think it's probably because he spent, you know, so much of his career as sort of a behind the scenes guy, a coach, a farm director, a bench coach.

Speaker 5: Contributor, you know, from the Bryce Harper to the twenty sixth man and beyond. But yeah, I don't know why Duran doesn't want to throw his fastball, but it just made for a little more drama. You went in extra innings and it kind of you know, I still remember when they clinched out there, Todd and you were there. We were sitting next to each other. I think it was was it O nine or eight? Wait, oh wait, Brad Lidge, I remember somebody popped one up and no, Ma, no, and Lidge watching it.

And you're right, Jim, like those home runs when they were hit Dodgers, the West Wilson one, the Harper one. Even the sharp place goes quiet place your rops. It goes crazy with the home run hit by Pius in the bottom of the ninth right and then but.

Speaker 2: So he had all those these cool little moments. You know, he had Harrison Bader, who has been a big part of this team, and you know Doron even though he blew that save last night, and David Robertson who was signed as a free agent and he has to come in and get out of that mess.

Speaker 2: Look around, you know, you see Wes Wilson off this side, like you guys just talked about. You know, He's like, I, you know, this is why I watched this team play in twenty twenty two, and this is why I wanted to come here. You know, this is why I signed with the Phillies when when I think it was the Brewers let him go.

Speaker 2: See all these different people that are involved and they're all kind of enjoying the moment together. It's not those those moments are always cool to see.

Speaker 5: There's celebrations. The last four years have been epic. You know, they when they clinch, I mean, you know, they turned clubhouses into the Schoogol River. You could do the backstroke in these clubhouses.

Speaker 2: It was like that last night walking through, you're like your shoes are just seeping into the carpet. And that's the whole story in itself, is these clubhouse guys, you know, Phil Sheridan with the Phillies and his crew have been where they just they spent take all night and by the next morning you don't even know that it happened.

Speaker 4: They hire a company well, because even the guys on the on the road are kind of excited for the team. You know, think they obviously are fans of their own team, but when they have those celebrations, I mean they enjoy them too. I Mean it's a it's a lot of hard work for him. There's a lot of behind, behind the scenes stuff going on. But it was also nice to see, you know, some of the uh, some of the folks on.

Speaker 4: And have a cigar and have a you know, have a drink and have some champagne and beer, because you know, it's a long, long season and there's a lot of pressure on all of these guys to perform, and it really is a celebration of something that's really important and it's hard to win. It's really difficult and I sat back and watched a lot of it go on. Little cigar in my hand, I might admit, and maybe a bourbon, but it was just nice to sit back and watch them because I know how difficult it is to get there.

Speaker 1: I know the work that's put in to get there, and it was really, in a lot of ways.

Speaker 4: An honor just to and to appreciate, you know, what they were going through. They get to a man kept saying the same thing, we got a lot of work to get to do.

Speaker 4: Goal is, and their goal is to win the World Series Championship, and right right now, with the way they play, and it's it's pretty clear that they're definitely, in my mind, one of the favorites to do.

Speaker 5: So it's funny they when they celebrate, they kind of they bang up these clubhouses pretty bad. I don't want to say they destroy them, but they hit them up pretty bad. But you know, these teams have it down to a science about how to keep their clubhouse intact. They actually will bring in like a temporary floor. It's like carpet with rubber on. I think you get it at home depot and they set that up. The plastic on the lockers, and then I think they bring in company, a company like a flood company or something like a disaster company when you have a small damage and water damage and they clean it the next day.

Speaker 3: So it is pretty pretty amazing. But I actually I think it's really important. Some people say the celebrations are overboard.

Speaker 5: It's really, to me really important to celebrate a division title because I mean, you're talking six months. Actually you're talking in a seven and a half with spring training, you're talking ups and downs, travel, injury. One hundred and sixty two games is that is a bear of a schedule. And when you prevail on top of your division with all you know a lot of good teams, they're all major leagues, they're all striving for the same thing, all the hard work, the blood, the sweat, the tears, the broken bones, the surgeries, and you prevail on top, you deserve to let it go one night. And I think it's important when you win the division.

Speaker 4: So I do have to say one thing. You mentioned something about travel, Jim. The fact that this team went through the travel that they had to deal with on the night before, and they'd gone through it like three or four times, maybe even more than that, it's been a really tough travel year. They've had some mechanical issues with their planes and stuff, and it's been a difficult year. I mean, when you travel that much, it's not it's not easy. And I mean they were four or five hours late to getting to Los Angeles. I mean that's a lot. And for them to bounce back, I mean it's sort of how the personality of this team they.

Speaker 4: I don't think they're very happy about it, but but they also know they've got a job to do, and they came back and did their job. And for them to bounce back and play against one of the best teams in baseball in their place in a time when the Dodgers are basically chasing the Phillies, I mean, that's that's that's big for them to have the resilience to do that, and we've got to give them.

Speaker 2: Yeah, Shureber talked about that travel situation. It's like, listen, you know, we've you deal with a lot of stuff, but you got to kind of keep focused on what's at hand. So you know, they didn't let it bother them obviously. I mean, it wasn't great getting in it, landing in La at two am and then getting your hotel. Emn, what time you guys got your hotel? Rub the three am?

Speaker 2: The deeper got into the night, the more resilient they seem to be, so didn't didn't really seem to affect them, affect.

Speaker 2: So but yeah, it was It was a it's a cool moment to see those things happen. And I agree with you, Jim, Like in Rubin, I know you feel the same way. You got to celebrate, you gotta let your hair down a little bit. So it is a really this the grind is real. The grind is real. So these guys got to go out and joins and if anybody wondering, Like you talk to any player in that clubhouse last night, they were all saying the same same thing, like, you know, we know we got more work to do. So this is in a situation where, you know, remember in twenty twenty two, was like, thank god, we've finally got here. They said, Oh my gosh, we're finally in. It's like we're going to enjoy this. We cleansed the division, but everybody, unprompted, said well, we know, you know, we've got more to do. We got we've got bigger fish to fry. We want to try to go out and win a World Series.

Speaker 5: Since Trey and Balm went on the IL, they are seven and one. Since the end of the world sweep in New York, they are fourteen and four. The world did not end since the trade deadline. Duran and Bader arrived since the trade deadline actually starting on August first, after the trade deadline, twenty nine and fourteen. Twenty nine and fourteen and a lot of good numbers. On June eleven, they were five back on June eleven. On September fifteenth, they closed out the division to go twelve and a half up. That's a huge turnarounde That is a sizzling team.

Speaker 5: Currently they are one in a half games behind Milwaukee for the best record in Major League Baseball. Very much in play. Rob Thompson said the other day, if it's there for the taking, we're going for it. So they still have that to play for. That would be for the best record in baseball. There, Like I said, they put away the Mets. They're twelve and twelve and a half up. It's amazing. They're five and a half up on on the Dodgers. To me, that's in hand, five and a half up on the Dodgers for that buy. And the Mets, I mean, they're tumble. Has been just head scratching and amazing. Really, they're only up by a game and a half for wild card positions. So you know, coming out of that sweep in New York, they're what four back, and they thought they were gonna make a run at the Phillies. So Phillies are just you know, I love teams that finish strong, and they are just finishing strong and overcoming that adversity of key players going down.

Speaker 4: Anybody who doesn't think that the trade deadline matters, oh guess what, folks, it does. I mean, I'm a man who lived it myself. But those key pieces not only boosts your talent pool on your team, but it also boosts the morale in the clubhouse. There are some guys and some things have happened. They've gone into a rotation in the outfield, and they're getting production out of the guys that they were not getting production out of in the early part of the season.

Speaker 4: Those three guys have been a key to this uplifting of this team late. But that move to get better and to get Duran were huge, and you got to give Dave Nebrowski and the people in the front office a lot of love. I have a soft spot obviously for those moves and how important they are, not just as an x GM, but also as someone who's sat in those clubhouses. When things are are done and you added to your team, it makes a difference in a lot of ways. This game is very mental and very emotional, and it's a long, long season, and it can really boost I mean, you can just see the energy of the team in general. I know that Bader's an energy player, but you can just see the energy overall in the team teams play when those moves were made and they they're stepping forward, it's really awesome.

He says, he is really super appreciative of that.

Speaker 2: How about David Robertson too, you know, he he's he's playing tennis and shuttling his kids back and forth to school in Rhode Island, and then the Philly signed him and he's been huge to this bullpen. And then John We talked with John Middleton last night about it, and and John said, you know, in terms of making that decision, because it puts you even further over the luxury tax and you're texted one hundred and ten percent, so now you're paying basically more than twice of what you're actually paying. David Robertson and to John Middleton's credit, goes money is the easy part. We didn't have any prospects. I'll do money every time, so you know, you have.

Speaker 4: I had a moment with both those players, both those people, both Robertson and John Middleton yesterday during the course of the celebration. One Robertson that was he said, this is why I came back, this is where I wanted to be, and this is why I came back. And that was that was a cool thing to hear from him. And to have him express that openly, you know, So this is this is the team I wanted to be with. And I also had a moment with John Middleton where you know, I know how personal it is for him and I'm and I expressed that to him.

Say what you want about John Middleton, this man wants to win at all costs, type A across the board, and he's a guy that lives and dies literally with every pitch. And he's just seeing pace at the end of the game yesterday and the boys were telling me about how it was. He was super nervous, obviously and rightfully. So He's put a lot of his resources and his soul into this thing. And I just congratulated Hi because I know how personal it is for him, and obviously he wants to win the World Series.

Speaker 5: I judge my owners by you're going to do everything it takes to win, and uh, he does that. He does everything it takes for the fans to experience a winner. He does that he's a great owner and the only thing missing on his his legend is a championship that will complete at all.
