Speaker 1: And very happy Thursday to you. At twelve oh seven in the West, it's the Ja and Phillips Show. Mister Randy Wang's across the Glass, John, We've got a Hagenberger update. The in and out Burger that was abandoned on Hagenberger has been bought and it's gonna be an Indian fast food joint. Indian fast food joint Hagenburger. So you can get some Tiki Masala while your car is getting broken into. Have fun, kids. And on the subject of Oakland, Oh boyd do we have a doozy that'll be coming up in the crime blodder later on. It is a very upsetting story, but it is very, very very Oakland. I said, hell no, baby boy, let me get up one out of here. Eight hundred two two two five two two two is the telephone number one eight hundred two two two five two two two coming up later on in the program. Former Laws Angeles mayor and candidate for governor Antonio Via Goosa joins us in studio but right now, the current governor of the state of California, Gavin Newsom, did a sit down with Jonathan Martin of The New York Times at a Politico Politico. Yeah, oh, I thought he was with the Times. No, it was Politico. Okay, we'll go with that. They were at Sam's in San Francisco. They were having some oysters, having some libations and talking politics, which is what you do at Sam's. And it was honestly one of Gavin's better interviews. He was much more relaxed, probably because he was knee deep in oysters. But he was asked about the current state of the California governor's race. And let's hear what Gavin had to say.

00:01:48
Speaker 2: You're a term woman to here, there is a succession, as we said here in March, are you running?

00:01:54
Speaker 3: I'm runny for governor.

00:01:55
Speaker 2: This could be a mess though for you guys, why haven't you gotten all these Democrats in a row?

00:02:00
Speaker 3: You're the leader of the Democratic Party.

00:02:01
Speaker 4: Is that we would get them here at Sam's have a cigar to martinis, we get some Yeah, some oysters.

00:02:08
Speaker 2: Your grandpa was called the Boss. He would have done the boss knew would have done. Gone to the back room at sam Huh.

00:02:14
Speaker 1: That's what they need, a little back room screaming match. You know what, do you honestly think the state would be run any poor if everyone was liquored up when they were making the big decisions. That's how it worked in the old days.

00:02:29
Speaker 4: So why don't you do that at the ground table, guys, with all these men exclusively women too, then.

00:02:36
Speaker 3: Not back then, let me back there.

00:02:37
Speaker 5: I'm just saying. So I think I think we're better off.

00:02:40
Speaker 4: We're a little bit you know, less opaque, more transparent in terms of that process.

00:02:44
Speaker 1: But it's unfold nothing more transparent than the strong arming of the current candidates to get out of the race, which is what's going on with the current chair of the California Democrat Party, Rusty Hicks. And you know what's funny if you look on social media, the ones who are most vocal about wanting to kick all of the also rans out of the race and just make a decision, have a smoke filled room come up with who is going to be the favorite candidate. It's the Lincoln project, guys. The people who cause Republicans to lose elections for years and years and years, who are now Democrats are now giving them the worst advice.

00:03:26
Speaker 5: But it's unfolding in real time.

00:03:28
Speaker 4: Look, I think the biggest challenge now with the governor's race in California, I would argue for a lot of races.

00:03:32
Speaker 5: Is so of your politics is just twenty four to seven trusts?

00:03:37
Speaker 1: And whose fault is that? That's all he talks about. You follow Gavin Newsom on social media? Well, first of all, it's him accusing everyone of being gay? Have you noticed that? Oh? Really, that's got to be easy. But whenever someone does something that he doesn't like, he accuses them of being gay. That's an interesting one, Gavin admitted in this interview. So only twice has he had to veto and delete something that they put out. Oh yeah, what was it that crossed the line? He did not say, but based on the stuff that makes it on there, you can only imagine what was too far. Well, what Gavin is doing right now, I mean this is one of the only times he talks about California. He regards himself as a national political figures. So all he does is weigh in on national subjects, and part of it is because he's running for president. But the other part of it is he's selling a book he is personally profiting from talking about national issues on national platforms. I keep in mind, even in this interview where he's talking about California. He's talking about it to Politico. He's not having this conversation with the San Francisco Chronicle or KGO or KTTV or any of the local California stations or newspapers. He's talking to a national outlet. And when he's doing that, he's taking up all of the oxygen in the room. So if you're running for governor and you're not in first place on the Democratic side, it's hard to break through and get people to pay attention to you when Gavin is out there making all this noise for tweeting outrageous things.

00:05:21
Speaker 4: Love twenty four seven and it just you know, doesn't care if he's a heel and the hero cares only if he's a star. And ever since he came down the escalator, it's.

00:05:30
Speaker 3: Defined that's the point.

00:05:31
Speaker 4: So much about the point, and so you have that, and then you've had the relationship in this state to you know, our reaction and response to election rigging, what we did with Prop fifty so.

00:05:42
Speaker 1: Much it's probably so many people think, wait, there was an election last year. We don't have to vote again for two more years. Right, At some point the fatigue does set in.

00:05:51
Speaker 4: What we did with Prop fifty, so much attention was placed on what we were doing in that space, et cetera.

00:05:57
Speaker 1: It's been hard, Yes, who brought all of the international attention to that issue. Gaff He tried to make that a contest between himself and Donald Trump. That was the entire and by the way, that's what he did during the recall election too, remember that, Yeah, and both times it worked. It did, But it works for Gavin, it doesn't work for the other Democrats who are trying to replace him as governor.

00:06:20
Speaker 4: On what we were doing in that space, et cetera. It's been hard for candidates for governor to get a lot of space. Yes, and free press, so you have this condensed period of time with all.

00:06:30
Speaker 1: I mean, they're doing interviews, there's just not a whole lot of people paying attention to them. Believe you me, I have wasted so much time listening to candidate interviews on KQED and I think I'm the only person doing that. But a lot of these interviews that they're doing are not in front of large audiences. I mean, let's face it, if you go on a national program, then you have a large audience. If you go on a television station in the Bay Area or in Los Angeles or San Diego, Sacramento, you get a sizeable audience, but a lot of these interviews that they're doing are in rooms with less than one hundred people in there, or their podcast with no one listening. It is interesting how you decide which podcast you're gonna go on, because there are definite podcasts that have massive reach and massive appeal, although where that appeal is in a statewide race is interesting because you're talking about international audiences where you're talking about podcasts. But some candidates go on podcasts and the podcast has like ten views well, and sometimes they just put up videos on their own. I mean, one of the candidates has a camera in her kitchen.

00:07:41
Speaker 3: Sorry for the noise on cutting carrots.

00:07:43
Speaker 1: I keep forgetting to watch her Instagram live that she did the night of the debate when it got canceled. She kept her outfit on, in the makeup on, and just stared at the camera and yammered, and she said she was taking questions from people who are watching. She took no questions. She was giving the answers that she would have given had the debate happened. For candidates for what question would you have asked if you were in that Instagram live, Oh, wouldn't you like to know, Katie, how do you make a nice MINNESTRONI.

00:08:13
Speaker 5: For candidates for governor to get a lot of space. Yes, and free press.

00:08:17
Speaker 4: So you have this condensed period of time with a lot of candidates, and right now no one is necessarily here compared to two Republicans that are here telling governor.

00:08:28
Speaker 1: There are other Republicans running. They're just a bunch of gadflies. Yeah, none of them have any name, idea at all or money. I think the total number that's going to be on the ballot, like they got enough signatures and they qualified, is in the sixties. Did you see one of the Democrats running is named something like Barack Obama. That's brilliant. It's like this guy who runs for like city assessor and he has changed his name to be have his middle name be low taxes. Oh, there was a guy who used to run for office in Fullerton who was like that too.

00:09:09
Speaker 3: Dropped out of the govern race. That's probably a mistake in hindsight.

00:09:12
Speaker 1: Wait, let's listen to this that are here.

00:09:13
Speaker 2: Telling governor dropped out of the govern race. That's probably a mistake in hindsight.

00:09:17
Speaker 1: Well, of course, what he's talking about there is the lieutenant governor who was running for governor for a very long time, has a ton of money raised, is independently wealthy. Alany Canlacis who dropped out because she thought Kamala was running for Californians. I think he didn't mention her name because he couldn't pronounce it.

00:09:39
Speaker 2: That are here telling governor dropped out of the govern race. That's probably a mistake in hindsight, wasn't it.

00:09:45
Speaker 5: It's hard to hard for me to judge. Just you have a lot of.

00:09:47
Speaker 3: If she stays in, I think she had a change the relation golf.

00:09:50
Speaker 1: No, look, nobody knows who she is, but she is the lieutenant governor and she had a ton of money. I think her family has more money than Tom Steyer. Oh boy, no, that would be a great ad right there. I could buy and sell Tom Steyer.

00:10:05
Speaker 3: Please do no Kamala Harris rhymes. There is no race here, right, Well, that's.

00:10:09
Speaker 5: What everyone waited for.

00:10:11
Speaker 4: They waited for Kama and jump in, and then everyone expected for you to run it. And so it kind of you combine what I just said with those two critical proofs.

00:10:18
Speaker 1: Yes, it created Yeah, Kamala dangling everyone around till the end of summer really pissed a whole bunch of people off. Yeah, why was it that she took so actually we know the answer. She had a book to her and it's easier to sell books if people think that you're going to be a candidate for high office than if you're someone who used to be someone. Those stadiums would have been way less fall.

00:10:40
Speaker 4: I will repeat myself. It created a big just a lot of chill and a lot of delay for what otherwise would be a campaign that would have been more organic for the last year.

00:10:50
Speaker 2: Year now, because Kamala says no, last summer, Padilla says no. An election desk surprised both of them.

00:10:55
Speaker 1: Yeah, Padilla, who again was also doing the teas because he's like, oh, I'm maybe after election day I'll decide. Well, don't forget before he was in the US Senate. He came from state politics, so he knows how screwed up Sacramento is and he didn't want to be blamed for that. Well, who gives up a safe Senate seat that you could keep for another fifty years? Not only can you stay in the US Senate until you die. I think some of them are actually dead and they they're still in the Senate.

00:11:26
Speaker 3: Kamala says no. Last summer, Padilla says no.

00:11:28
Speaker 2: An election dey surprised both of them last year.

00:11:32
Speaker 5: Overwhelmingly people were surprised by both.

00:11:35
Speaker 2: I understand that you talked to the Attorney General Rob Bonta at some point.

00:11:39
Speaker 1: Oh really, well that's not his name. Politico doesn't know. But just for the people in the know, you may think that it's Rob or Robert or Bobert. It's not. It's Bob.

00:11:54
Speaker 3: Everybody.

00:11:54
Speaker 4: Well, he was calling all of us, and he was thinking about it.

00:11:58
Speaker 1: So Bonta was calling knew some Hey, should I run for governor? Well, how is he going to raise any money? He can't take any more money from the Dongs at.

00:12:06
Speaker 3: This point, absolutely absolutely.

00:12:09
Speaker 1: I wonder how many people he called when he was actively telling everyone around him that he was running for governor. Said what about that Dong investigation? Buddy? And then he spent what a half a million dollars on a white collar criminal defense law firm, Yes, just to assist in the FBI in their investigation of the Dongs. And Brian Asseavito and of course our girl o Glyn totally normal.

00:12:40
Speaker 4: Everybody, Well, he was calling all of us and he was thinking about it.

00:12:44
Speaker 5: You have gotten you, you got two.

00:12:50
Speaker 4: Republicans, you got all these German and we have open primary, and so it's just the top two people.

00:12:54
Speaker 5: Forget that.

00:12:55
Speaker 1: You know what's so funny about this, I think that he is genuinely This is the first interview I've seen of him where he seems to genuinely be himself and not some caricature that he thinks can get elected president. And it's funny to hear him talk about this because he clearly just doesn't care. I have listened to almost every interview Gavin has done on this book tour. It's the most interesting one and it's the best one. And I think it's the oysters. How can you not open up after you've got oysters in your face? They're an aphrodisiac.

00:13:32
Speaker 5: So it's Whoever's top two.

00:13:34
Speaker 1: What you got to do if you want Gavin to open up, is you got to wind him and dine him, you know, like speaking wise, yes, yes, yes.

00:13:44
Speaker 5: So it's Whoever's top two?

00:13:45
Speaker 4: And if remember California has more Republicans and most Republican states California.

00:13:50
Speaker 5: I mean when people and by the way, can we.

00:13:52
Speaker 4: Just adjust some talking points When people talk about coastal California, we have more farmers and ranches. Okay, we have more hunters, we have more forestry jobs. You talk to me about agriculture.

00:14:03
Speaker 1: We got more meth heads too. We have more of everything here because we're bigger than everyone.

00:14:07
Speaker 4: You're talk to me about agriculture, where you're talking about California sixty two billions. We have more manufacturing in this state than any other state in the country.

00:14:16
Speaker 5: I just, you know, when.

00:14:17
Speaker 1: People tell the way I loved this interview. Martin's one of these people who's been following Gavin forever, so he kept giving him crap, how many times are you going to say the future happens here? First? And then Gavin's like, how many times are you gonna ask me if I'm running for president?

00:14:33
Speaker 4: And when people talk down often we feel we're being talked down to when people don't acknowledge our rural communities, our agricultural footprint, our footprint as it relates to.

00:14:44
Speaker 1: This is what Gavin says when he says we need the high speed rail, it's because Fresno's been ignored.

00:14:50
Speaker 4: A lot of what is represented quote unquote is Heartland politics. Ross arrested there reflected here. So the point is there's a lot of Republicans. There's only two of them versus a lot of Democrats, a lot more Democrats.

00:15:02
Speaker 1: Wonder if Zachy made the ballot. He's running as a Republican. Oh, doesn't he run every time?

00:15:07
Speaker 4: Yes, there's only two of them versus a lot of Democrats. A lot more Democrats, but a lot more of them running still.

00:15:14
Speaker 5: So anyway, I got to get focused on this race. It's hard. But I don't like when Jerry.

00:15:22
Speaker 4: Brown never liked me when I was running for governor because you know it's hard.

00:15:27
Speaker 1: Jerry Brown didn't like you for a lot of reasons. Well, I don't think he's ever warmed up to him too.

00:15:34
Speaker 4: When Jerry Brown never liked me when I was running for governor, because you know, it's hard. It's hard when you sell by day, it's hard. That's part of the way. It's reality. All you get a moment in time.

00:15:50
Speaker 1: That's just one part of this hour long sit down at Sam's. But of course, if you're at Sam's in San Francisco and you're talking politics and you're having a life. Guess who makes a cameo appearance later on Willie Brown. Yes he does, and we'll have that exchange about what Willy thinks about Gavin running for president coming up next. 00:17:33
Speaker 1: Coming up after the news at one, Antonio Viara Goosa joins us in studio. Also, the crime blotder is going to be a real doozy today. But next Gavin Newsom is talking politics and Willie Brown joins the conversation eight hundred two two two five two two two Asia Telephone number one eight hundred two two two five two two two. Antonio Viragosa joins us at the top of the hour. Right now we're going through the sound of California Governor Gavin Newsom sit down with Politico. But this time Randy. He was joined by an old friend. So if you're going to be doing an interview at Sam's and San Francisco, in fact, if you're talking politics at San Francisco, it's almost like you summon him. He just appears. Willy Brown is there ready to do what Willy Brown does best make everyone laugh. Let's listen to Gavin getting poked about his presidential run with Willy Brown in the background.

00:18:41
Speaker 2: Let's find the final authority on this question. Willy Brown mayor come on over here, you get the final word. Should Gavin News again?

00:18:48
Speaker 1: This not scheduled. This is just where Willy has lunch all the time. I love it.

00:18:52
Speaker 3: Should Gavin News run for president? Yes, there's a pre commitment. Oh Jesus, what do you want? What will you want? A pardon?

00:19:03
Speaker 5: Oh no, he wants, he want.

00:19:07
Speaker 1: That's what I need. Seriously, more of these interviews should be done while people are drinking. I'm telling you, man, a couple of drinks in people get honest.

00:19:17
Speaker 3: Should he run? He should win when he runs. Well, you came here.

00:19:23
Speaker 2: This city accepted you and made you. And that's the beauty of this city, right, is that it accepts folks from all the world, all over the country. You can come here and sort of make your name.

00:19:30
Speaker 6: Right, This was and is the greatest city on earth.

00:19:39
Speaker 3: You talk to the Lord and he says, I love it. But then again, it's not Minneola.

00:19:48
Speaker 1: And that's his hometown in Texas.

00:19:50
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, watching that he who is better mayor New Summer Brown.

00:19:59
Speaker 5: Jesus As Brown was.

00:20:02
Speaker 1: He did not want to jump on that head grenade.

00:20:05
Speaker 3: Who was better mayor New Summer Brown?

00:20:07
Speaker 5: Jesus Brown was, I ain't going there. What the hell you doing that?

00:20:10
Speaker 4: By the way, they asked Pat Brown that in front of Jerry Brown. Oh, they got awkward. It got really awkward. Well because Pat Brown immediately said.

00:20:18
Speaker 1: See, all of a sudden, this is becoming what Sam's is people talking all kinds of crap about politics in the back room. What's interesting to me is this is the second time it's come up about him having animosity towards Jerry Brown. The two of them must not be fond of one another. Well, have you seen Gavin ever getting invited to Calusa County? That's true, he invites everybody there. How many times has Alex Michaelson done a remote from Calusa County? I think he gets his mail there.

00:20:52
Speaker 5: Well, because Pat Brown immediately said, I.

00:20:54
Speaker 4: Was, Yeah, Jerry's sitting there as governor exactly, So you talk about that and I ain't going there.

00:21:01
Speaker 6: And you know, Jerry claims he's very deserved and very pulled back, and he never really a search anything except he ran for president five times.

00:21:11
Speaker 3: And lost all.

00:21:17
Speaker 1: Well, he's what ninety two now? Oh yeah, he don't care. No, you know what, he never cared when he was fifty. No, he didn't.

00:21:25
Speaker 3: Don't be nice. He's competition, you know for Oh you have even going on? I'm not look at this. That was a sixth time fifish about average sior. You're high school? It was four something.

00:21:37
Speaker 5: It's in there. Oh there, fuck no, I literally yeah, no, for somebody was in there.

00:21:41
Speaker 1: It was thirty five baseball player. I thought he was a pitcher.

00:21:49
Speaker 5: Almost twenty rebounds a game. Basketball was double and double? Yes, you you just think I'm some old politician.

00:21:55
Speaker 3: Now it's weird up your basketball?

00:22:00
Speaker 5: Are you kidding?

00:22:01
Speaker 4: My son is not beating There's one hundred bucks if he beats me one on one. Last night he got crushed.

00:22:06
Speaker 3: Could you be?

00:22:08
Speaker 1: Well, we know how much he loves playing basketball with little kids. We saw that in China. Yeah, did he crush that little Chinese kid? Yes? He did?

00:22:15
Speaker 5: Could you be he's sick almost six to two?

00:22:18
Speaker 2: Could you beat every other twenty twenty eight contender in basketball at the one on one Jos Shapiro, Wes Moore, JB Pritzker.

00:22:24
Speaker 1: Oh, JB. Pritzker, Come on, I would pay to see that. Has there been a basketball player in the NBA besides maybe Benoit Benjamin at the end who weighs more than JB.

00:22:38
Speaker 3: Pritzker, Dandy Basher?

00:22:41
Speaker 2: If you think them all, who are they?

00:22:45
Speaker 5: Who are these people you speak? I saw Wes, I said, Wes has got some game, which I respect. I think they probably all have a football for Stanford.

00:22:52
Speaker 3: How about that?

00:22:53
Speaker 5: I do on football? Know when I want to do a home run hitting contest?

00:22:56
Speaker 3: There you go?

00:22:56
Speaker 5: No bs, I just I want to go. I'm dead serious. This is your with any of them? That not even competition?

00:23:02
Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think this is happening.

00:23:04
Speaker 4: No, no, you remember, but there's some good basketball players you introduced me to win?

00:23:09
Speaker 5: What's is the best?

00:23:10
Speaker 3: So should we new some more than that's? You think I'd be good? No? No, no. If there's going to be a blood guy.

00:23:18
Speaker 1: It's Brown, Willie Brown, vice presidential candidate at the age of ninety three. Well, Biden was getting up there when he was the VP. Maybe not ninety three, but you know, of course again, remember Willy is in his nineties and he is so much sharper than Biden ever was on his best.

00:23:41
Speaker 3: Day and then we went to sleep.

00:23:44
Speaker 1: Age affects everyone differently. Fact check true. Do you remember when Kamala got in in twenty twenty four and everyone was asking Willie what he thought what Kamala should do when she was going to pick a vice president. She ends up going with Tim Wallas. That was a terrible decision. Willie was the guy that said, no, it should be Whitmer because of its two women running. It's gonna be on the front page news every single day.

00:24:11
Speaker 3: You know what.

00:24:12
Speaker 1: She couldn't have made a worse pick than Walls. Maybe Willie was right.

00:24:20
Speaker 6: I didn't. We can't top that. That's a good way you can get away with her. Thank you.

00:24:29
Speaker 1: The entire interview is on YouTube and it's it's a good time. It is, uh the most normal Gavin has ever sounded. Isn't that the entire concept of that Bill maher podcast where you have to have a drink or two before you are a guest on the program because he wants everyone lickered up, and then they have the conversation. And if you're wondering why these things happen in podcasts and YouTube series and why no one's talking about drinking before a radio interview. It's because we're governed by the FCC and we can't be trusted if we had a whiskey before the show. So, Jillian, and if you're listening in the Bay Area and you don't know who I'm talking about, Jillian Barbery, my on air partner for many years here in Los Angeles, was a book guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. I don't know how many times, but a bunch of times. And she told me that one of the things that would happen on the Tonight Show is when you were waiting in your dressing room before the show started, they had a liquor card that would be in the room with you, so there'd be a bucket of ice, and there would be every imaginable liquor that you could possibly want, and they encouraged you to drink because they wanted you to be a little sauced by the time you went out and sat down on the couch with Jay. Makes you a little more interesting for some paper. There's some real clammy people out there, I would imagine, but I also would imagine that there's some people who really like liquor a lot. I don't know if everyone got the liquor cart. You think it was left over from Ed McMahon. He liked it a lot. So there you go. Gavin Newsom on this never ending book tour. He has done so many interviews, but notably, like you have pointed out, not one of them has been with a local outlet.

00:26:31
Speaker 3: Nope.

00:26:33
Speaker 1: Eight hundred two two two five two two two is the telephone number one eight hundred two two two five two two two. If you'd like to email the show, you can do so at Johnny don't like show at gmail dot com. That's Johnny Don't Like show at gmail dot com. We spent a lot of time talking about the In and Out Burger in the city of Oakland that was shut down despite being a profitable location, because In and Out said they could not ensure the safety of their customers or their employees. And it was notable because In and Out Burger, which has been around for over seventy five years, has never closed a location, not before Hagenberger and not after Hagenberger.

00:27:19
Speaker 3: Hagenberger.

00:27:20
Speaker 1: By the way, if you are new to the show and you don't know what that drop is from, it's when Gavin Newsom was hosting his og podcast Politicken with Marshawn Lynch and his buddy Drew the Agent, Dug the Agent, and they went to San Quentin and Marshawn's having a conversation with an inmate from San Quentin who's like, what the hell is going on in Oakland right now? You guys lost the in and Out Burger. Hagenberger is a freaking mess. And Gavin walks up and goes.

00:27:48
Speaker 7: Hagenberger, Hey, you stayed your ass off of Hagenberger.

00:27:56
Speaker 1: That's when you know a part of town has a real bad reputation when they're talking about it in San Quentin as a place to avoid because it's too dangerous. Well, things are changing on the Hagenburger as somebody has decided to lease that location of the abandoned in and out Burger. Maybe they'll have better luck, maybe not for more Here's kron four we.

00:28:22
Speaker 8: Left two years of sitting vacant. The former in and Out location in Oakland's Hagenberger Corridor is getting a fresh start. The new owner, a Santa Rosa based restaurant group, has plans to turn the location into an entirely new restaurant.

00:28:36
Speaker 1: Did they look into this location before they signed the lease. Yeah, they may want to check into that wasn't there. I'm trying to remember when the whole thing was going on about the Hagenberger Corridor and you had the In and Out Burger shutting down, you had the taco bell that wouldn't allow dine in, You had the I think someone was trying to open a round table pizza and they were thirty days away from opening, and the place got broken into, and they were trying to get out of their lease. People were getting carjacked in the drive through lane.

00:29:08
Speaker 8: Krawm forsa man Harry was at the Haggenberger Corridor and explains what to know about the plan and the obstacles the area is hoping to overcome.

00:29:17
Speaker 9: This area of Hagenberger Road still has a lot of empty businesses.

00:29:23
Speaker 1: You don't say, is there a reason why Hagenberger.

00:29:28
Speaker 9: Many closing and citing ongoing crime as the reason. But this In and Out behind me may soon have new life as a new ownership group is coming in almost two years to the day In and Out closed their Hagenberger Corridor location. New ownership is expected to turn into a Korelane kitchen.

00:29:47
Speaker 1: Curry Lane Kitchen. These people have to be new to town. It's a little different running a business in Santa Rosa compared to running a business on the Hagenberger. They not get the papers.

00:30:01
Speaker 9: In Santa Rosa is expected to turn into a Corelaine Kitchen, a fast food Indian spot.

00:30:07
Speaker 7: Oh it's awesome. I'm glad to hear that's another business gonna come by.

00:30:12
Speaker 9: Cornelio Ambers works on construction in the area. He's watched as Denny's Black Bear Diner.

00:30:18
Speaker 1: I forgot about the Dennis went down. Oh yeah, black Bear Diner too.

00:30:23
Speaker 9: He's watched as Denny's Black Bear Diner and two Starbucks stores have closed in the last four years.

00:30:30
Speaker 7: Is this kind of sad because you know, he's kind of scares of me for the economy.

00:30:33
Speaker 9: When In and Out closed, the company said it was because their customers and staff were regularly victims of car breakings, property damage, and armed robberies.

00:30:43
Speaker 1: They could not guarantee the safety of people going to eat it in and out Burger or people working at In and Out Burger. The craziest thing about all of this is that these fast food companies were worried that the carjackers would kill you before or the fast food did an issue.

00:31:02
Speaker 9: Interim Oakland Police Chief James Beer has been trying to tackle head on.

00:31:07
Speaker 1: By the way, this guy who's the interim chief, because Shanghi's police chief, Floyd Mitchell only lasted eighteen months before he said I'm out of here. Absolutely absolutely, and everyone thought he'd go back to Lubbock. But I think he's trying to be the police chief in Fremont now. But this guy who's the interim chief, because it takes Oakland a year and a half to find a new chief, we're in the middle of that process again. He says he wants the job full time, and why would you do that? Who in the world would want that job full time? Is Oakland has gone through over a dozen police chiefs in the last fifteen years. The City of Oakland's like Elizabeth Taylor with the husbands issue and every time you check an issue.

00:31:51
Speaker 9: Interim Oakland Police Chief James Beer has been trying to tackle head on Bagenberger.

00:31:57
Speaker 10: We've dedicated significant resources there. We're partnering with other entities within the community that are helping fund additional officers on overtime burglaries, assaults, and robberies have been greatly reduced in that quarrior.

00:32:11
Speaker 1: Now that could be because they're surging police presence, but it also could be that there's nothing there anymore. If there's no one to rob, of course, crime is going to go down. If there's no out Burger in that shopping center, and there hasn't been for two years, there's a lot less car traffic in the corridor. Well, even the Hilton hotel in that neighborhood closed down. There's nothing left.

00:32:37
Speaker 10: Burglaries, assaults, and robberies have been greatly reduced in that corridor.

00:32:41
Speaker 1: This area is on your live videos.

00:32:43
Speaker 3: You're veillante. Em Boidering is not allowed.

00:32:47
Speaker 1: NAT that makes you feel like you want a burger. Wait, they play that on the loud speaker in the Hagenburger. This area is on your live video.

00:32:54
Speaker 5: Surveillante em Boidering is not allowed.

00:32:58
Speaker 1: That's like the recording that they play before you get on the matterhorn at Disneyland. To keep your arms inside the car. If you're waiting in line for the matterhorn, you will hear about seventy five times. Remain seated, please, Simon and Thanos Boivre.

00:33:14
Speaker 9: The announcement runs every few minutes as cameras record the parking lot beer as hopeful as they work to reduce crime, more businesses will fill the empty storefronts.

00:33:24
Speaker 10: My family and I still frequent a lot of the businesses dere Canes round Table, all of that sort. Are looking forward to any new businesses.

00:33:31
Speaker 1: That popble the Canes. I don't think you can eat inside. I think you've got to order at the window. Yeah, and I'm sure that window is bulletproof.

00:33:39
Speaker 10: Frequent a lot of the businesses dere Canes round Table, all of that.

00:33:42
Speaker 3: Sort of looking.

00:33:43
Speaker 1: I wonder if you could do a study of how many people because you can only do the drive through it that raising Canes have because of that, gotten a lot of stains on their t shirts from the dipping sauce. Eating chicken fingers of the car is a tricky game.

00:34:00
Speaker 10: Freaquent all out the businesses, Derek Kane's round Table, all of that. So we're looking forward to any new businesses that's popping up.

00:34:05
Speaker 5: Panda Express.

00:34:06
Speaker 9: The property was purchased by Santa Rosa based Shandy Hospitality Group. Ambrize already plans to come back when Coreline Kitchen open.

00:34:14
Speaker 7: Oh Common get something Inferd. My kids will get Panda. They love Panda.

00:34:20
Speaker 1: They know the kids won't eat the Indian food, so they're going to get the orange chicken. How do they even buy insurance? I don't think you get insurance. Who is willing to sell them insurance for a place that had to shut down the last time due to crime?

00:34:35
Speaker 7: Hagen Burger gets something Inferid. My kids will get Panda. They love Panda.

00:34:40
Speaker 9: The new ownership group said they're excited about the possibilities for this new location, but didn't give a date for when they'll be opening in Oakland. Amanda Harry Krawn for News.

00:34:51
Speaker 1: There we go a possible sign of improvement in the Hagenberger corridor, as the in and out Burger that's been vacant for two years is being taken over by an Indian fast food joint.

00:35:03
Speaker 3: Hey, you stay your ass off of Hagenberger.

00:35:06
Speaker 1: How long do you give this restaurant? We will be modern. Maybe we should go to the grand opening. Might also be the grand closing. No, no, no, no, our health insurance isn't that good. I don't think the union would allow it. No, of course not. Some of the most successful brands in all of that industry have shut down. In and out? Can you come up with a brand that is more successful than an in and out? Can you think about an in and out burger that you've ever been to where you haven't seen a line of cars that blocks traffic. And as much as you want to say, oh, that's just a California thing, every state they've expanded to, same thing is happening. You know, they're putting one up on the Las Vegas Strip, but they're not allowed to have a drive through because they know it will back up track on the strip. Is that the one that's going to be three stories? Probably if they can't make it, you think a fast food Indian joint is going to be able to make it work. That's going to be the shot in the arm, the Hagenberger needs Hagenburger. You know it's going to happen. With all the fast food restaurants and all the diners going out of business, people in that neighborhood are going to be forced to eat healthy because there's no other option. Well, and you know you're getting your cardio in because you're probably running for your life. Yeah, no kidding, All right, well, best of luck. Coming up next, we're going to be joined by the former mayor of Los Angeles current candidate for governor here in the state of California, Antonio via Ragosa. Don't don't you go anywhere. It's the John Phillips Show.
