He'll be bad. It's the Internet. You're busy. Let's do this for
July twenty second, twenty twenty four. For the next hour or so,
let me help you sort through the world of gaming on Game Mess Mornings Live
with me Jeff Grabb. Today, a new game update references the next PlayStation,
and a dad who has been dead in a volcano for the last five
years is back in Tech and eight. But first, please join me and
welcoming today's co host the Game Mess Mornings. It's Mike Minati. Everybody,
Mike, how are you doing? What's wrong with us? Okay, look,
I think we should get into what's wrong with us? We definitely should.
But what's wrong with Nintendo? That's a good question. Uh Okay.
So I was like doing stuff around the house and then Mike was still streaming
and he had started streaming Nintendo World Championships last night, and I think I
got on and started streaming at around one am it is when I started,
and then ended up doing about a four hour stream, so we were up
to like we streamed till like five in the morning, which is win the
event, the first weekly event in Nintendo World Championships ended. We were trying
to, you know, get our best times in the in that moment,
Yeah, I ha to maximize our time exactly, So it was all it
was a good use of our time. Personally, I think we we're smart,
responsible people. There is no leaderboard for all the events, like cumulative,
Like, what the hell is wrong? What's what's again? It's like,
I guess they never said there would be. I guess I know,
right, Why wouldn't it work that way? It's such a good idea,
like like if this is such a good like format for this sort of thing,
if they would just do a couple of small things like obviously we've been
talking about leader bore it's a lot for like every little event ghost stay,
it would be great. But I'm at the very least I'm like, oh
man, okay, no, well have this weekly event and you try to
sit the best time on these five events, and then there will be of
course, there'll be leaderboards for all all those five events. Actually I wasn't
even sure if that would be the case, but that is what you do
get for the global and the year you were born. And then I was
like, okay, and then we'll get, you know, just for all
five events the time put together, and that'll be like your real ranking,
like in the actual Nintendo World Champions, right. That is just completely there's
nothing even referencing something like that. So I was just like, oh my
god, all right, whatever, I still had a really good time,
but the game could be better with just so many tiny changes. It's weird
because it's like, I guess the next one's like, well, I guess
I don't really have to worry about my time on each of them. It's
like I could really just focus on one, which I don't know. That
feels good. But what was your highest rank? By the way, I
think I got six teenth on mush Zoom. Wow. Really okay, damn,
that's so pretty amazing. Yeah, that was That one's hard to because
you know, you could do that quick start thing, but the quick start
thing is hard to pull off. You have to do that and then immediately
do one of the hardest like little platforming things to actually get that three point
five six in the first place, So I could see why. I'm like
only fifteen people in the world were able to pull that off and get a
faster time than I had three point six six, so like tenth of a
second more than you, and I was not in the top one hundred for
that one. He's okay, Yeah, I bet there's quite a few people
tied for three point five six. That must be kind of what's happening there.
And then for my birth year, which again that's there's the two leader
boards global and then the year you were born, first year ones, I
do better in those. Yeah, I got two first places on that,
so really yes, which ones? Mush zoom? And then I think evasion
is key I got a first. Yeah, I was trying to do better
if Evasion's keys the only one I wasn't in the top one thousand. I
was trying to improve on that one. I literally right out of time.
I got kicked out. So Zelda Fortunately the Zelda one, I was just
out of the top one thousand. I think it was eleven hundred or something
like that. So yeah, yeah, that one I worked to get a
little bit better, was I wasn't. I wasn't in the top one hundred,
and that one still my best one was ninety four in the Metroid one.
But like in the leaderboard, I can't because I'm ninety four and it
shows me like the four above and below me, so I can literally see
you on on at number ninety one. So even my best one is ruined
because I see your stupid name with your stupid pickle icon. Yeah, let's
go pickle. You can't even like scroll the global leaderboard either, right,
so you can't like go and look and see who else is on there.
Like we couldn't go searching for Dan's name if we wanted to. No,
Like what the one thing you can do is you can watch the replay data
of everybody who got first place in the five events. So that's I think
it's kind of funny to see, like, oh that's what they were doing.
Oh right, So there's that. You know, I still had a
lot of fun doing it, and it is still you know, I feel
good, like oh wow, you know, because you know this met trade
one right make ninety four. It tells me forty three thousand, two hundred
and thirty people did it. I'm in the top zero point three percent.
Well good, all right, good, yep, that's yeah, I gamed.
Yep, we definitely, we definitely gamed. There's no one that can
deny that. Yeah. It's a little frustrating though. It's like they have
the ability to share ghost data like, of course they do. I think
I think here's the thing about this game, and we'll move on this second.
Everybody happen Monday. We're going to get into the gaming news here pretty
soon. Don't worry. Not like there's a ton happening again. It's a
slow time of year. Uh. They I think they have the ability to
do all the things we're asking for in this game. I think they have
these features in the game and decided for whatever reason to turn them off or
not include them or hide them so like leader like per event leader boards.
I'm sure we're in there at one time and they just were like, Okay,
that doesn't serve our with this game whatever, to make it a party
game, to make it feel like some other kind of event. And then
the ghost data, same thing. I think they have the ability to share
that. Clearly they do, and they're just like, no, we don't
want people like obsessing over that. And I'm like, let me obsess.
That's it. I'm gonna do it anyhow, Just let me do it in
the game. It's frustrating, right, all right, let's explain what we
do here most weekdays. I Jeff Greb will help piece your gaming life back
together that includes breaking news and maybe even some of our own original reporting.
For all these topics, I'll get the input of a bona fide expert who
will make me look smart. If you were watching live on Twitch welcome,
You can always listen to the show later on podcast feeds by searching for Game
Mess Mornings, or find the RSS on giant bomb dot com. You can
also catch the show later with chapters and timestamps on YouTube. Hello YouTube.
All right, we have a lot to get into, so let's start the
Morning Mess with no Man SKYPS five Pro upgrade data mind and visual improvements revealed.
There's a PS five Pro upgrade within the data here. We'll get into
that. This is from solal a one at Twisted Vauxel who writes Hello Games
nomanns. Sky has received a significant update recently, and a data mine of
the update files has revealed specifications for a potential PS five Pro upgrade. The
leaked specifications were found in the upgrade files released by Hello Games. This patch
includes a customized graphics preset for new hardware cod named Trinity in the update files.
The codename aligns with the rumored internal name for the PS five Pro.
The first images for the Trinity graphics preset, while the second one is for
the PS five and there's images in the story that reference this. Based on
the graphics preset, the visual improvements for Nomad Sky do not seem to be
substantial. The dynamic resolution scaling setting has been increased from point six to point
eight, indicating a higher average resolution. And that's like one would be full
four K, point eight would be you know, eighty percent of four K,
like eighty percent of the pixels of four K and six sixty percent,
so you're gonna get twenty percent more pixels. Image should be a little sharper,
and then of course there's always the upscaling techniques that they use to fill
in the rest, and then this Some of the graphics details have also been
upgraded from high to ultra, but these changes are minor. They do not
appear to be significant enhancements to visual quality. Now, this could be like
placeholder stuff from Hello Games, right, they could be testing things, but
they're like, we will dial this in later, and this could just be
like sitting there for now, like, oh, we know this works,
and let's see what else we can get away with. But we're not gonna
worry about that until we get this very important update out, I would assume
something like that is happening. Sure, I'm not like too worried about the
like literal specs of that mode with More interesting here is the fact that there
is a preset for an unannounced pro version of the PlayStation five. Yeah,
exactly, And it's you know, I don't think that the lack of spectacular
improvements here is indicative of what the PS five pro is capable of. Now
we've heard before it's gonna be about forty forty five percent more powerful than the
PS five when all is said and done, and the thing still seems like
it's coming out later this year, you know, I've that's the room that's
been the rumor for a long time. I've for like a couple of new
rumors where it's like, oh no, they're like spooling up the marketing,
like they are getting ready to shoot commercials and things like that. So to
me, that says, still this holiday, where are you at with a
PS five pro? Like overall, I think my excitement or appetite for a
PS five pro when this first, when this thing was first getting rumored,
was like, Okay, I don't think I need that, And in this
moment, I think it's like lower than that. I'm like even less,
I feel less of a need for that thing than I've ever felt before.
I'm I'm pretty happy with the PS five. How are you feeling? Yeah,
I mean, you know, as some of the truths of it is
that at this point, I'm playing a lot of games on PC. Unless
it is, you know, a big Playsation exclusive, then yeah, I'll
play that in PlayStation. And let's be honest, like this year, that
happens like two three times, right the whole calendar year. That's like,
oh, I really need to like invest so much so that you know,
the few games I am gonna end up playing on my PlayStation are going to
like better, not if the pro came out and it was like we are
really catching up and it's going to run amazingly well, and you know,
you're you're gonna be you know, happy playing a lot more games on your
console. Again, I don't know, but it's like, you know,
like the one game I'm excited to play on my PlayStation this year is Astrobot,
and I already played that on a base PlayStation five at Summer Game Fest
and it seemed like that one at least was looking about as good as I
needed to. Like, what's what's the showcase game for this thing going to
be? Maybe they're going to explain how Astrobot will look even way more impressive
on this thing. That. Don't get me wrong in all this, Jeff,
I'm a sicko. I'm gonna win. I'm gonna buy it too.
Yeah, yeah, but I guess I am really curious to see how they
position it and how much better things are going to look. You know,
is it a matter of some of these games from the past that I wasn't
super happy with the performance of, like Jedi Survivor, like Final Fantasy sixteen,
Like, are those going to suddenly work way better on this thing?
That's kind of the big question for me. Yeah. I think there's a
chance that we get like some sight improvements for a lot of those games,
nothing major, but like going from thirty to sixty frames per second would be
huge for a lot of those. So I hope that is that this is
what this is all about at the end of the day, I just don't
know if that is what like the marketing will like ride on. Is that
Hey, now those games that were thirty or sixty again we're back there,
or if they will try some nonsense like eight K or something along those lines,
because you know, no one has AKT and even if you do,
who cares gotta help not you don't, You won't see a difference. It's
just not You're just not going to see it between four K and ak so
Abstragon Zongma two gonna look on a placeship vi pro is my question exactly.
Yes, either way, when do you think we hear about this? Obviously
we are in the dregs of summer right now, we are still deep into
July. Uh do you think we get it by August? I think I'm
kind of like leaning towards September, with like a November release or something like
that. I don't know. Yeah, I mean again, it's weird because
like what game is positioned with it? Because Astrobot comes out in September,
right, and like that's basically their biggest game this fall at least you know,
exclusive, So you would imagine and be like, hey, like before
you you know, buy this this game, like you should know, well,
you get excited about the next PlayStation, but again, it's not gonna
there's no way to post come out September. That seems real early, so
maybe not. I don't know, well, if you can really use Lego
Horizon as the show piece for this kind of thing, So I don't know,
it's weird because look, new hardware, you would have thought that maybe
the time to announce that would have been yesterday. In some ways, I
guess it doesn't really matter as long as it does come out in November and
it's already for Christmas time. In all of that stuff, you certainly want
it before some of the big third party things. I mean, funnily enough,
I guess one of those would be Call of Duty, right, Yeah,
maybe you want to make sure all the Call of Duty people know like,
hey, you can make Call of Duty look better than ever, Like,
oh, I don't know if you are hearing weird school yard rumors about
Call of Duty being more of an Xbox thing, but it's going to look
better on PlayStation than it does on any Xbox. Maybe that's kind of the
low key pitch on that thing. There's other big third party things like yeah,
there's Assassin's Creed Shadows coming out and other things like that, so maybe
that's going to be the pitch is a lot this third party stuff going to
look much better on here than the Xbox. Although I don't know how much
more marketing they need to do to convince people that they should have a PlayStation
instead of an Xbox. It seems like they've been winning that battle, right.
Maybe there is like like some lingering concerns about Call of Duty. You're
right there, like because when you start seeing called doing, you know,
Call of Duty looks great on everything. It's just that that game's always run
well. Is that really going to make a difference. But you're right there,
could just be a perception thing like, hey, no, you should
get the new PS five Pro and that's coming out right alongside Call of Duty.
You should associate those two things and you should stick with PlayStation, reinvest
in PlayStation, don't go over to Xbox. Not that I think that's some
great concern for Sony, but maybe that is part of what is informing their
strategy here. And again, I think the whole reason you do this is
because you know you sold so many PlayStation fives, and you know one way
to sell more PlayStation fives is you got to make a new skew because you
have to get the sick gos like us, it will just buy a new
one to get in and then maybe they're going to give their old PlayStation five
to a friend, a family member, and now that's somebody else in the
ecosystem who is at least buying games. Yeah, you know, it's funny
how in the start of the generation, I was like, I don't think
they need to do that anymore, and then as we kind of got into
I don't want to say a stall, they've been selling plastation fives, but
they clearly haven't been selling as many as they would maybe once or there's been
something right, and that's largely tied to, you know, a very slow
software release calendar for them this year. So here's at least something you can
do to drum up some excitement. I am one. I am curious if
this extends the generation all that much like we got uh with the with the
PlayStation four pro, where it seems like we got at least another year out
of that cycle then we would have otherwise, I mean, how many more
years do you think we have of PlayStation fives and Xbox series right now?
As we're getting close to what is it going to be when do these things
come out twenty twenty? They came out in twenty twenty. Yeah, so
god four, they at least feel like four year old consoles to you.
No, now, they don't ever feel like four year old consoles to me.
I guess they're starting to feel a little bit older in my mind when
I think about them, but they are. They're four year old consoles.
I don't think that means the original Xbox, Yes, got replaced by the
three sixty after four years. Yes, it was done by now basically,
yeah, I think that when I look at, like how much longer these
things have. It varies between Xbox and PlayStation, but somewhere between twenty twenty
six and twenty twenty eight, I think. I think we get replacements for
both by around twenty twenty eight. So that means the pro has to come
out this year because you can't have like, well, I guess you can.
They did the Xbox Series X or Xbox one X over at Microsoft,
where it's like there was two years of the one X before they got replaced.
I suppose the sickos don't really care. They're happy to buy a new
thing, maybe every couple of years, but still I think. I think
in PlayStation's eyes, they were like, let's get it out this year,
and then in twenty twenty eight we'll have something new to attack to replace it
will have a nice long generation to make a lot of money from the PS
five, and then we'll start things fresh then and then Microsoft might try something
different in twenty twenty six. So yeah, it's it's it's strange. Last
thing about PS five pro, Mike, what do you think the price is
going to be? Yeah? Uh, five hundred dollars? Yeah, I
mean you don't think it'll be more than the PS five because I meant to
say, how much is a PlayStation five or nine? Is five hundred dollars?
Five hundred? Yeah? Right, So it's like would there be a
nice drop on the PS five because I don't know. I mean, it
partly is like that's what you should that's how it used to it should be,
But yeah, you're right, maybe not a six hundred dollars console seems
wild to me, Like I still hear the words five hundred and ninety nine
or US retail dollars right from that E three, the PlayStation three. So
I don't know, there's a part that thinks that just seems wild. But
you know, they might just be positioning this as the real premium thing,
and you know they might do weird things. Gosh, I saw somebody in
chat say like, are they gonna plaster AI over this thing? And man,
if it is just using upscaling, I could see them, because maybe
they're gonna position upscaling as a bigger deal here. I mean they could be
the PlayStation five AI or something like that, or at least the words AI
is gonna be on that box. So that's some way they can make it
seem like it's some expensive super futuristic thing. Yeah, I mean somewhere between
five hundred and six or dollars. It'd be bizarre feels even more than that.
Yes, I don't think it'll be much more than that. I think
probably six hundred now, although I'm not like dead set, it will definitely
be more than the PS five like a year ago. If it came out
in that timeframe, definitely it would have been a lot more. But as
we are slowly coming out of inflation hyperinflation, I should say, it is
starting to feel like companies that are obviously raising prices on devices and continue to
try to take profits are looking more and more out of touch, and maybe
there's a chance that Sony feels that pressure and tries to avoid it. But
usually my default here is companies will get away with whatever they can get away
with. And I bet Sony still feels like they can get away with charging
six hundred dollars or more for a PS five pro, especially when they knew
who the audience is after the PS four Pro, when they saw who actually
showed up to buy that thing. They know it's the sickos, and they
know that the siccos will probably pay a little bit more than everyone else.
All right, Yeah, but I mean you can, you know, always
price yourself out. Yes, three DS had that problem way back when,
and they had the course correct. As soon as they did find reasonable price,
I was like, Okay, nope, this is selling just fine.
It really was just overpriced. I wonder if maybe they're a little scared to
go six hundred and five point fifty is maybe more of a happy medium here
between the original price and a higher price. I don't be, cause you
know, there are a lot of things these days that it turns out they
are being overpriced. You know, we're seeing the even something as Mondana's fast
food restaurants finally lowering their prices a bit. All these people canceling their their
tours? What to are the world tours because tickets are way too expensive?
The Iron Metroid World Tour. Cool? Sure, by the way, that's
right, Yeah, thank you. So, I don't know. I wonder
if they're a little scared to go to six hundred, but you might be
right. They might know this is for the sick goes. They're going to
be willing to spend it. I'm going to be curious to see what the
marketing push for that is and like what the side by sides are actually going
to look like, because it's always been diminishing returns and you imagine that would
be doubly true for just you know, a mid console refresh like this.
It I said, last question was the price question, But I should I
want to ask this now? Uh, you fucking liar, I'm a liar,
And yeah, you just have to deal with it. Is there any
chance it's not called the PS five PRO? Do you think there's could be
called something else the PS five AI. Yeah, there's a chance. I
think it'd be kind of wild to not just go with the PlayStation five pro
for great sense. Everybody knows what that means, and that is so difficult
with these things. Uh. And the reason I asked is, and this
is, hey, this is meaningless. It'll go like running with this.
But when I heard some of those rumors about, oh, the marketing spinning
up one of the things that like a code name for on the marketing side,
because clearly the internal code name is Trinity was PlayStation six point zero.
So listen, I think that's just marketers. I think that's them not fully
understanding what they're dealing with. That would be wild if they try to position
this as the PlayStation six yeah, or even if like what if they did
call likes PlayStation six point h like, that would be we I don't think
they're doing that, everybody. Let's be very clear. I don't think that's
what this is. I mean, this is just you just say something to
the marketing team and they're like, well, okay, it's the next PlayStation,
so six pline, now let's go. I don't know ooh, I've
worried. Yeah, I mean, I don't think Sony's gonna suddenly start like
trying to shake up the way console generations work. It's been working too well
for them, So I just don't think that's very likely something that would be
wild to cannibalize maybe your next system or kind of throw people off like that,
just to get a little bit more juice out of this one. It
would sell better, right, Yeah, it would sell better if you called
it the PlayStation six. And I can understand that temptation, but it's it's
a very It's a different thing if you're saying, after four years, hey
give us six hundred dollars for the next real PlayStation. I mean that's wild.
And I get it to some extent because when the PlayStation six comes out,
how different isn't going to feel from one of those mid gen refreshes.
It's going to play all your PlayStation five games, right, you know,
so much of that's just going to depend on arbitrary things they decide, like
changing the UI, like changing the way the controller looks and things like that,
Like are going to do that with this? No, I assume that
it's going to, you know, just use the PlayStation five controllers. I
assume it's going to be the same exact operating system and things like that.
You're going to you're going to have the six in there in any way,
shape or form. Expectations are a difference. Yeah, that would be a
wild idea. It would be It would probably be a blunder based on what
this thing's actually going to be and the disappointment that would follow. So,
yeah, you're right, and it's not you. That's probably almost certainly not
what that is. Referencing you. Good way to make a lot more PC
gamers in the world, Yeah, a little bit, all right. Next
story, e A Sports College Football twenty five sold two point to million one
hundred dollars copies with early access. This is from one hundred dollar copies of
hundred dollar copies. This is from Sophie McAvoy at Games Industry dopiz. EA
Sports College Football twenty five sold over two million copies of its Premium edition,
which offered access to the game three days ahead of launch. The publisher announced
on Friday that two point two million players had gained early access to the game.
As noted by IgM, the only way to gain access was to buy
the Dux Edition on console, which retailed at one hundred dollars compared to the
seventy dollars standard edition. I would take maybe some potential issue with this because
you could play the ten hour demo and so get access to it by having
EA Play, and that you get that by having Game Pass Ultimate. So
still, I bet lots of people did buy this game, but I think
there's probably a significant portion that that actually did gain access to it through other
means. In addition to the two point two million players in early access,
the game also saw six hundred thousand people. Oh no, they have really
literally the next paragraph. In addition to two point two million players in early
access, the game also saw six hundred thousand people play the game early through
subscription service EA Play. So there you go, two point eight million people
actually playing the game not reading the story. Wow, now I read up
until that paragraph, and I'm like, okay, I got the story.
Let's go. According to Soana Circanna analyst Matt Piscitela, EA Sports College Football
was at number three in the US for daily active users on Xbox Series X
and S and number four on PS five. Yeah, that's really crazy.
That's a huge, huge number. That's we knew there was pent up demand,
but this really shows it. Do you have any thoughts on it?
And then I guess we can. I kind of want to talk about the
early accesstuff because it's still a hot topic with some people. No, you
know, this isn't really my thing, Jeff. I've never been a big
fan of the more realistic sports games. I can get into m WIB the
show every once in a while just because I like baseball, you know,
more than any other sport. I'm happy to see a hit, right,
which is kind of a wild thing, because normally I don't have to be
like I'm worried that there aren't enough hits. See something new like this come
out and make a lot of money is just good for the video game industry,
I hope. Yep. And then the game is selling a time at
one hundred dollars a piece. Yeah, that's wild. I mean, obviously,
this method of early access and paying to get the game a few days
early is here to stay. Right. How do you feel about it?
Because I personally, I'm not bothered by it. I'll just wait if I
don't want to pay that money, and then I'll get it later. Now
that's said, I know we're on a slippery slope a little bit, and
that this signals to the companies that people are willing to pay more money.
So maybe this could lead to price increases and that that I'm not happy about.
But I just don't mind this necessarily. How do you feel about it
now? You know it's a bit more monetizing the sick because it's something we've
seen in lots and lots of other things. You know, mms have been
giving early access to people who you know, it's either usually get these more
expensive addition or at least pre order right right, something like that. Now,
again, if it's just a matter of, hey, you could pay
you know more to get in early, I'm not going to feel a whole
lot of pressure there, unless it's like, you know, something I'm really
excited about and there's other things in that more expensive version that I would want
anyways, or it's again, it's such a big deal to me that I
don't mind splurging a little bit. I'm not going to be upset that some
people are playing a game three days early earlier than me. I can wait,
I could do something else. I could kill more time playing old Nintendo
games, right, But you're right, like it is. I hope people
aren't like, like, wow, look how happy everybody is to spend one
hundred dollars on a video game. We should maybe just make that the standard.
That could be a disaster. I hope that's not what people are thinking.
Yeah. I think what's what they're really thinking is there's like malleyability in
how they can price different parts of the market right where it's there are people
willing to pay one hundred dollars, and they know that there are millions of
people out there willing to pay twenty dollars and they'll get to them eventually,
And then I think that's that's probably the right way to do this, where
it's like pay let's put a nerd tax on something and let them, you
know, the huge nerds for college football show up and pay extra money,
and they could sort of subsidize these games for everyone else that's going to stay
to the seventy dollars price tag. I know it's maybe a very optimistic way
of looking at it, but I do think that's part of what's happening here
is that these companies are like, look, we can charge this segment more.
Let's do it, and then the normal price could say the normal price
for even longer because we are finding ways to make more money from these games
in other ways. Alright, let's see here, Let's take a quick break.
When we get back, plenty more headlines to get into right after this.
All right, we are right back into it with Concord gets surprisingly low
Steam numbers during open beta. This is from Alex Hopley at Game Reactor.
Sony struck gold earlier this year with the launch of Hell Divers two, a
game that proved incredibly popular both on PC and PS five. While the player
based for Hell Divers two might have fallen off substantially, there are still plenty
of players logging on in any given day. It seemed like that this PC
and PS five strategy will be Sony's new normal for its live service efforts.
But it seems that lightning hasn't struck twice. Concord, Firewalk Studio and Sony's
team based hero shooter has failed to drum up an audience on Steam. By
the looks of things, over the course of an open beta weekend, where
one would expect people to be interested enough to give it a go, Concord
only managed to peak current player count of twenty three hundred eighty eight as per
Steam Database. It's worth noting that the game is also available on the Epic
Game Store, and there are likely plenty of people who enjoyed the game on
PlayStation, but these numbers are still not very encouraging. Yeah, I think
not very encouraging. It is probably the right way to put it. I
don't think again that this is not the the a death sentence for this game
at this moment. Like I think the launch really still can be something very
different depending on a lot of factors. But this is not going to be
the kind of thing where it's like, all right, now we know that
this game is going to be a hit. It feels like it's a long
way from turning into a hit at this point, right, Yeah, I
mean, because again, this is going to be, you know, a
game with a price tag forty bucks, hey, sixty bucks for the Digital
Bucks edition to guess you three days of early access there it is again.
So I think it's worrying that when the game was free for a few days,
and even after a period of time where you know, people could play
it also online, maybe you know fewer people at this was just the open
beta available to everybody, and if there's a lack of interest in that,
I think that's concerning, especially again when the full release is going to have
a forty dollars price tag to get into it. I mean, I'm not
I'm not feeling super confident about, you know, the prospects for this game,
and you know, sid so much of that. Man, the first
impressions are important with these kind of things, Jeff. And again, I
know you can't way second guess these things. I'm not sure what exactly the
thinking was with that very story specific trailer. You kind of said it before.
It's like, Wow, this is a PlayStation game, So that's what
people kind of expect with these things. Maybe I don't really know that's what
they expect with this kind of game, with these things. I did actually
I played the open beta, right, So yeah, I spent a few
hours with this thing. And you know, I'm somebody who's really like overwatching
other kind of hero based or class based shooters before. Yeah, I was
having fun. I mean, I was enjoying it. I like that the
time to kill is a bit longer in this one, so it makes it
feel a little bit more that Halo Slash Destiny flavor as opposed to being a
pure Overwatch kind of clone. And there was, you know, a mode
that was basically the counter strike mode and kind of doing counter strike stuff with
these hero characters. That was kind of fun to me. And you know,
there's a lot of characters, so you find a few of them that
click with you a bit, right, you know, have said all that,
like, none of these characters are as immediately appealing or interesting as you
know, what Overwatch can do. You know, I also played some of
our Watch too, because they have a new character in that Juno. I
just like, looking at you, I'm like, this character looks so cool.
It's like an eighty sci fi anime like Space Girl. That's awesome.
And you know, it's just so much it's just so much more visually appealing
and interesting off the bat than this kind of more like you know, like
these people have realistic faces Jeff right, I think that's the best way to
put it. There's a realism here that I think is not really a good
fits. And you know, the Guards of the Galaxy thing that can maybe
be overstated that one character, the big guy, is just so drax that
it's kind of insulted. H right, yep, Oh, this is the
big guy who like kind of talks a little stiff, and like, you
know, worries about honor, things like oh god, this is just a
drax. So you know, it's kind of wild to me that so much
of what they're positioning with this game is like the storyline the characters, when
it seems to be the weakest component. Yep, it's I don't envy there
the position they're in. I think trying to make like a game and go
like, okay, let's make characters disappealing as Blizzard makes them is very,
very challenging, Like they just that was an uphill battle from the beginning,
and I don't like hate the roster and I even kind of like mentioned this
some of our camera where we were I was won over a little bit by
some the story elements that they that they had in the videos, but not
to the point where I'm like now super excited to go play the game.
I was more like, oh, wow, this is better than I expected.
And I think that is kind of still where Concord mostly is. For
me. It's either oh, this is fine or that's better than I expected.
It's just I think I had pretty low expectations, so it's not reaching
to the point where it is sort of having this poll that is taking me
away from anything else that I'm interested in playing right now. So yeah,
I feel like it's it's not like done, but I think that they are
going to have to like really figure out some marketing for this game. They're
going to have to really figure out how to how to get people interested,
and it might they might have to make the game sort of free with like
PlayStation Plus or something like that to get make sure that there is a certain
number of people playing. But you know, we saw you know, an
open beta and barely anyone touching it. It's it's rough out there, and
what do you think this says for the rest of Sony's like a live service
apar Coach going forward? Like this is the one that they didn't cancel,
right They had several other projects that they're like, well, we're not going
to do that factions thing from Naughty Dog anymore. I feel like factions from
Naughty Dog, regardless of what like the cost of monetization or like the micro
transactions was going to be for the team, because that was the concern is
we have so much content, we'd have to make this thing to keep it
going long term. I feel like you put that thing out for forty dollars
with you know, a few updates every once in a while, and that
does way better than this. But maybe I'm just fantasy booking. Yeah,
there's so many questions about that still of factions because you're right, like,
man, there's nothing the salvage there. There's no product to release and make
some money from the Last of Us arguably Sony's most important franchise. So that's
that is wild in a lot of ways. But gosh, you're right,
it is such an upward battle and Sony's it's you know, when you're doing
ten or whatever hover it was online multiplayer projects, you're like, okay,
you're casting a wide net. I guess that's the idea. But it's like,
okay, you're lucky to get one hit or two. And they seemed
to get really lucky with hell Divers too. That's you can do way better
than anybody would have expected. It's like, okay, great, how many
problems did that solve? Was like, you know, PlayStation is suddenly super
more secure now than it ever was, and it's kind of like, no,
like already we're talking about player numbers falling down for that a bit.
It's kind of like, well, what's it a Fortnite hit. Well,
okay, yeah, of course not is that the expectation, because god,
Concord can never be that. I should be careful what I say because now
you watch somehow it will be. But you know, good for it if
it can be, you know, like, yeah, okay, how many
more Hell Divers two size hits do you need to get for PlayStation to suddenly
be like, okay, great, this is actually making up for all the
money we used to make by just being able to release more games. I
don't know, And again, like when's the next next one after Concord?
Is a few things cooking, but you know there's no last of us,
which again, and that's wild to me. It you know, you see
why it's sounded like a good strategy, and maybe it still is. You
know, I don't see the numbers, but you know, you know,
we got a Health Divers too, and now we're getting a Concord and maybe
not anything else for a while. And it just doesn't seem like Concord is
going to be pulling a ton of weight. Yeah, I agree. Ebo
happened over the weekend, and it was it was a great event. I
watched some of all of the events, but especially you paid attention to Street
Writers three, and I was happy with that because there was some great moments
in there, some really excellent moments in fact, but there were some news
out of there. I just got a couple of stories, Mike. If
there's anything else you want to call out, feel free. But Tech and
eight is bringing back Heihachi and adding a new story chapter. This is from
some upstart called timor Hussein, a game spot. Van dy Namco has announced
Hayachi Mishima as the next DLC character for Tech and eight and revealed that,
for the first time in the series's history, a new chapter in the story
mode will be added to the game. The extra story content will delve deeper
into the ongoing feud between the Mishima and Cosma families. The announcement was final.
We're going to talk about that. I know it's been overlooked for far
too long. The announcement was made during EVO twenty twenty four, at which
Tech and eight was a major attraction for players wanting to compete in high level
battles and viewers who want to see the best of the best duke it out
in a fighting game. Heyachi is a fan favorite character and one of the
main antagonists of the of the Techan series. His arrival follows Eddie Gordo at
DLC character that is already available, and Lydia Sebska Sobiska, who will be
un President Yes, who will be available widely from July twenty fifth. Heyachi
is expected to be available in fall twenty twenty four. Yeah, hey,
you know, we kind of knew this was going to happen eventually, but
I don't know how well, what's the grunts? I don't know, am
I fuddy that he about to say it? I did this a little bit
when they did the Bison also, I you know, fighting games always do
this. They always kill off the bad guy because well, you know,
you got to kill bad guys at the end of the things, and they're
like, uh shit, the new Ones, how people were probably going to
play as that guy because you know, he's a popular character, so you
got to bring him back from the dead by either just saying, oh,
he survived anyways, or yeah, but I mean is more important than the
sanctity of death in the tech In universe. But but you know, we
have Raino. They made a whole new character that basically kind of had that
move set and everybody liked that character. Anyways, and again you get one
new character, you know, three or four months, it's like, okay,
great, one of these slatches for another Mishima style character. Look,
I don't know. I'm a little bit of a fuddy duddy about this kind
of thing and about in general, characters coming back to death constantly in media.
It's just kind of one of my pet peeves, you know, hey,
like just because again where everyone's in on the joke. It's funny having
heradas little things saying that he's dead for sure at the end of it whatever,
But it's like, oh god, we really just can't ever, ever,
ever move on from anything. But then I get's a very popular character,
he's like one of the most iconic Techning characters. Well then don't kill
him, and then don't kill him if you know you can't actually kill him.
So yeah, I'm a little fuddy duddy about this. And then the
other aspect of it is, you know, I'm glad we're getting more story
mode content. But one of my few complaints with the tech Any story mode,
which I thought was excellent, is that it is entirely about the Mishimas,
so it focuses very heavily on a few specific characters and then other people
that are maybe more interested in seeing stuff from we don't get so, you
know, I guess, Hey, of course the story mode is going to
be about Mishima's again, and at least it seems like Jen necessarily isn't super
involved with it, and it's gonna be about what Hayachi is up to and
why he's alive and all this stuff. That's fine, But you know,
if you told me like this one's going, you know, the next deal
C is going to really focus more on Nina, right, I'd be kind
of interested in that. But you know, presumably we're all going to see
what's going off Raina and kind of what she was up to was the cliffhanger
from the last story mode. So that's fine, it'll be interesting, but
I don't know. How do you feel about it, Jeff? Yeah,
I mean I feel the same way as you do about the story where it's
like I wish they were expanding, Well, who knows how they're actually maybe
they do expand the story, and hey, Hachi is just sort of the
the tarp they put over to get people interested, and maybe they'll do some
interesting stuff with that. But like on its face, suggesting that this is
going to be more about the same battle that we've been dealing with is a
little disappointing, I think. But I'm glad, Hey, Hachi's back.
I wanted them to come back. I don't care about any of the same
stuff that I am. Not a fuddy Nora Duddy about this. It's like,
yeah, no, you should bring back that character. That's very cool.
I think that is excellent. He throws dudes in volcanoes. He should
be alive instead of dead. That's my opinion. They don't kill him,
don't. It's hard to kill people too. It doesn't bother me. S
and K is bringing S and K versus Capcom SVC Chaos to PC, Switch
and PS four. It's from Andy Robinson at BGC. S and K has
re released its classic fighting crossover S and K versus Capcom SVC Chos for pcvs
THEM, with Switch and PS four versions arriving tomorrow as in today, July
twenty second. SVC Chaos was originally released in arcades in two thousand and three
with PS two and Xbox Sports A riding layer. Later The title was never
previously released for PC or Nintendo platforms. The game features a roster of thirty
six characters across various series from S and K mainly King of Fighters and Capcom
mainly Street Fighter. This version includes new rollback, net code and tournament modes,
as well as a hip box viewer and a gallery mode featuring eighty nine
pieces of artwork like key art, character portraits, and more. That's cool.
I'm glad Ebo's getting shadow drops. That's always a fun time. I'm
I'm like probably just gonna grab this and have it and maybe play it a
little bit. I'm not like planning to dive into it in any major way.
You got any love for SVC Chaos. I never really played much of
it, actually, because the game's reputation isn't great, right, So this
is this one came out after Capcom's to cap converss S and K games,
Right, this is different, and this is different. So through casual fans
like, well, I thought the cap converse isn't kick No, this is
not that. This is S and K's game, right, And this was,
yeah, the one S and K made, and you know it was
still like running I think on Neogo hardware, which at this point was very
very old, so it didn't really look as good as CAP Converses and K.
I also kind of had a strangely our prisonation. In general, the
game was just kind of criticized for the sort of vibe of it being a
little bit weird. I bet still plays really well, and seeing the kind
of S and K version of Capcom characters is pretty fun, So I am
excited to go and play this. Cap con Versus S and K two is
the one that I really want. But you know, seeing them do this
does give me hope it happens. There's a part of me it's like,
oh, we're just really this by itself and not doing a collection with this
and the two Conversuses S and K games. Maybe that's difficult because again you
have two different developers and publishers involved with those games, so you couldn't really
easily put this one together with the Cap con Versus and K games. I
don't know, but I am glad that this is still getting that release and
it is getting things like rollback net code, right, you know, because
like otherwise, if you wanted to play this game, you are depending on
emulation. I don't think there ever was a release for it outside of it
coming out to you know, Xbox at PS two in two thousand and three
and two thousand and four. So yeah, great, let's get these fighting
games out on modern platforms because you know, even a lesser pixel based fighting
game from back then. Uh, they don't get a lot of those anymore.
So there's still something very novel and interesting about them. Yep. I
would. I would just rather have it than not have it. This is
so I feel. I think it's great from that perspective. And like I
said, I'll just you know, add it on the Steam account or something
like that and play it for a little bit and just to see what it
looks like. Mostly yeah, zero in this game as the secret character.
Oh never mind, man, throw your trash. Wow, okay, damn
ship and then bring it back to life. Yeah, you're right, all
right, you're right. My bad. Now you're interested in a piece of
shit? Yeah, all right. Listen, they did something interesting in the
character. They killed them and brought them back. They've never done that before.
Uh. Capcom's dream is to make more Marvel crossover games. This is
from Virginia Glaze at Dexterdo and All Times Games journalist's name. Shuhei Matsumoto,
producer of Street Fighter six in the Marvel versus Capcom Fighting game Code Collection,
spoke with Dexerdo in an exclusive interview where he shed some light on the future
of the NVC series. Basically just said we want to do more, and
we've been hearing them kind of like suggest this recently. I was like,
hey, yeah, this is definitely something we're looking at Capcom. You know,
someone in chat said that SVC Chaos came out at S and K's lowest
point. We're right now at Capcom's highest point. And them just like talking
like, man, maybe we want to do some more crossover games. Has
me like super excited that this is something that is going to happen and probably
be amazing. Are you getting your hopes out? Mike? Oh yeah,
absolutely? Got mean. Okay, so they want to do it. Who
doesn't want to do that with Capcom right now? Like if I'm a Sega
or something, I would have been on the phone yesterday. This is SVC.
There we go, We'll get another new SVC. We see three Sega
versus Capcom Like yeah, hey, you want to make that game, And
like put all our characters in it, and you know, like give us
some money and raise their profile. Sure. Absolutely. It's also great because
it gives Capcom a way of putting a lot of it's Dawn street Fighter fighting
game characters. Because you know, it's like, I want to get a
new Dark Suckers, a new rival School's, a new Powerstone. Are those
things going to happen? Eh? Probably not, or at least they're way
less likely than you know, just the next Street Fighter. But in a
versus game, you can just throw all of those characters in there, you
know. You know, for a while, I was just like, just
do some just do a Capcom versus Capcom. Even right these days, it
seems like another mar versus Capcom is super likely, and frankly, another Capcom
versus S and K seems super plausible with Terry and My coming to street Fighter
six. We also got another teaser trailer of Terry and street Fighter six during
EVO and that looks great. But yeah, like we should be getting way
more of these games. There's so many possibilities. I do think we're not
going to get anything else until at least those two first. I mean,
I have no idea why you don't do a Marvel versus capcom for whatever they
want, ken you do, yes, right, that's the one you do,
and you probably also do with Cap versus S and K. But there
are so many possibilities out there, you know. I mean that day one
instead of versus a Tatsunoko, I still don't even know what that is.
Uh So come on, Yeah, there's there's a lot of ways to have
fun with this concept that they should be doing more with there for sure.
Yeah, Tetsunako is Tetsunoko is not ultraman, but I always confuse it with
ultraman, I think is how it goes. So yeah, I don't know
either. Give me writer of to you cowards your pieces of shit. Tails
of Zilia remastered switch release spoted online. I think it might be coming to
other things as well, but this is from Nintendo Life, Liam Dolan Bandy
Namco could be gearing up for a remaster of the twenty eleven fantasy role playing
game Tales of Zilia. According to a new Room or doing the rounds online,
some reddit use have supposedly discovered possible retailer leaks, with Switch, PlayStation
and Xbox listings surfacing on three European websites owned by the same company for a
remastered version of Zilia. It seems these products product listings are also registered to
bandy Namco, and there's some artwork included. Tales of Zilia was originally released
on the PlayStation three and was followed by a sequel in twenty twelve, which
was also exclusively available on the same platform. Bandy Namco has previously released Tales
of Aspiria Definitive Edition and Tales of Simfonia Remastered for the Switch, and online
listing for Tales of Zilia two popped up in twenty eight team for the PlayStation
four, but to this day, the sequel remains exclusive to PS three.
Are you getting your hopes up for this one? Mike? Someone who I
know is You're like the one person I know who's played these Tales games recently.
Yeah. No, I like Tales quite a bit. Nearly is one
that I've never really jumped into. I think, just because there's some awareness
to me about there being two of them. You don't usually get direct sequels
in this franchise. Uh, And it would be weird to me if the
games should come out and they die and stay dead. Yeah. My God,
you know, if you're going to release these games, I kind of
hope you give me both of them at this point, but it would not
be shocking. They have been remastering a lot of the Tales games. You
got the very good Vesperia remaster and then the terrible Symphonia remaster. Uh.
You know, the Stefonia thing was a weird situation there with them, you
know, not having the source code of the better gamecub version, so point
to them, they have to release the bad, thirty fps lame PS two
version. I guess that's how it works. I don't know. I guess
I'm a little We're we're getting this before Tales of the Abyss, which is
a beloved entry that came out sort of in between Symphonia and Vesperia. You
know that had a three D sport back in the day, so maybe in
their minds like, oh no, we already did something with that one not
too long ago, even though I think what most people really want is to
be able to play it on mod or home contals are at least on the
switch. But no, like Zelie is going to happen sooner or later.
So yeah, I'm happy to see them do this. Yeah, the Tales
of Games I always thought looked pretty, yeah, pretty and interesting as someone
who was not super in RPGs, but was paying attention during to all the
games Race or GameCube because not that there was a million of those. So
like when Tales of was that Simfonia came out on GameCube? That's simpolt,
Yeah, Savoni, it was the GameCube one that was the first one I
played, because it was like, you know, if you didn't have a
lot of RPGs, an original one. So the fact that that came out
and it was good, it seemed like that's when a lot of people discovered
the series exactly. So I was like paying attention at that time and then
realizing over time like oh, there's all these other Tales of Games and they're
part of the same series. Yeah, this will probably happen, as you
said, because they've been doing this and they're probably looking for another one to
do next, and this is probably the next one in line. If you're
interested in the series, do do look into that Tales of Asparia Definite Edition
that's on everything. It's great on Switch. I like that game a lot.
Yep, all right, that does it for the news I have some
poll questions that we need to get through and ask here in a second,
let me get that set up. See, Uh, did you see that
but as the union thing? Oh yeah, I did mean to put that
in there. Yes, that as the unionized uh, basically across the board,
right right. Yeah, it's not just QA testers or anything like that.
It's like it's it's all of it's uh, it's workers. So it
seemed substantial and uh, you know it's a big one, but I think
it's first time that's happened at least a Microsoft t xbox game studio or anything
like that. Right. Microsoft is previously said that they would they would uh
recognize unions going forward, so they that should be good news for them.
Uh, that's really really cool. That is that feels like a sea change.
That feels like it has officially like come if the one of the biggest
studios in the world that has made some of the biggest games in world,
and it's has no like there's no evidence of them slowing down anytime soon.
They're working on Elder Scroll six. Uh to me, that says, okay,
if they can do it, any studio can do it. And maybe
that's not true, but it's it's starting to feel that way, so very
exciting. All right, let's see here poll. Well, sorry, did
you all see Lucy from cyberpunk Ed Runners is going to Guilty Year Stride?
Yeah? The other Oh you might bring that one up. That looked that
looked pretty cool. Cool too. I'm not like super into that series,
but that seems like a character that fits that game. Yeah, yeah,
yeah, exactly, it seems like a good fit. So that's smart.
You know, you know, that's a game that's kind of you know,
that's been out for a while now, so you cannot to have an interesting
guest character to get you know, people assigned something like the super hardcore interested
in that, So that's smart. Yep, all right, pull question from
Friday. Have you made an in game purchase in the last year? Fifty
seven percent said yes, forty three percent said no. We do have a
new poll question. We will get to that here in a second. In
the meantime, Mike, why don't you tell people where they can find you
on the internet, what you have going on and all that good stuff.
I'm a managing editor over at Gainstpeed, so please check us out over there.
Nineties Disney is my Disney Podcast. We did an episode talking about our
favorite transportation options in Disney theme parks and other theme parks, so that was
fun. Speaking of Disney, check out men Max. They posted a video
of me gallivanting around Disneyland, which is a fun time. The forty minute
version is free. There's a four hour version available just to their Patreon,
so check that out if you are so inclined. It was funny because you
were going back to Disneyland for like, have you been there very frequently in
like the last couple of years, and you're like you had just done the
Hey, let's guide some idiots through this place and have a good time.
You're like, I'm looking forward to like maybe spending some time with myself.
And then there's this video where you're like you are once again guiding people around
and I'm back, like, as soon as it got started, you were
like, no, this is fun. I'm sure there's a good time.
Thought that's actually it was an amazing time. I had a lot of fun,
and you know, there was like an hour where I'm the last person
standing, so I still had that just wandering around by myself time. Yep,
that's still seems very very cool. All right, Uh, let's see
your new pole question. Uh, I got it right here? Do you
feel? Alar is amazed about the story where when we went outside Rise Resistance
and Dan was like, is this shoot outside? Yep, backward? Did
you hear it? Did you see? Uh while you're gone? Did you
see us having to tell Dan A Rinkert that the sun has No, you
can't see that. No, you'll kill him. You can't tell this one.
Oh that's right, jes Janda doesn't know either. O. You guys
missed that. Huh. Yeah, you started because he was like, oh,
if I had like a little bit of the sun in my room,
that wouldn't kill me, right, suddenly would a spoonful of the sun.
He's like, the Sun's just the lava, right, And we're like no
that he kind of wouldn't believe us, and then he's like, I try
to explain that the sun's just always exploding. He's like, well, that
doesn't make any sense. It doesn't look like an explosion. I'm looking at
it right now. It's not exploding. Yeah, And I was like,
well, that's because of the gravity. And then he said the sun has
gravity, and then we just kind of got sad. Yeah, I got
real sad. I got bummed out. That one doesn't feel good like Chan's
going back on vacation. Yep, this is what I was worried about.
All right, New Pole question, do you feel a need to upgrade to
the PS five Pro? We will just give me the PS six point zero
or the PlayStation six point zero. Sure, why not. We'll get the
results of that and discuss it on Games Morning is on Wednesday here on Giant
Bomb. Speaking a Giant Bomb, it should be mostly a normal week in
a lot of ways. I know Jan's got some some comic con stuff happening
here here and there, but we'll have BombCast. We will have a Blake
Club, and I don't think there's any reason Blake Club wouldn't happen, So
club expect, expect Blake Club. There could be a new Jeff Jeff's things
that voicemail dumb truck. If you didn't listen to that last voicemail dumb truck,
you should. It was a very good one. Everyone was on the
top of their game. We'll have UPF BCR all that kind of stuff.
Maybe a power Bomb cast in there, who knows. We'll figure it all
out. Let you all know, maybe some more ten Dye World Championship stuff.
