00:00:00 Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio. 00:00:04 Speaker 2: US men's hockey team was going to come back to the New York area and then disperse from there as the season second half the season starts on Wednesday. Well they can't, couldn't because of the blizzard, and they ended up in all places Miami, which let the party continue there. But the men's hockey team coming home, they've been invited to the White House. Not sure when they're going to be able to squeeze that in if that's something over the summer. But US men's hockey team back home in Miami. Uh Seaton poll question for the first hour the program is going to be one. 00:00:42 Speaker 3: I'm sure we could source a million out of letting a hockey team loose in Miami. The hockey players seem to have the freest pass for just party and don't worry about it. 00:00:54 Speaker 2: Well, if you remember Ovechkin, I think he was like in a fountain for days. 00:00:59 Speaker 4: Yeah. 00:01:01 Speaker 3: I mean, if we did like four months worth of coverage, if Tom Brady drunk at a celeb at a parade, yeah, I can assure you him sort of being carried through this one thing is a way more team than what I believe the US hockey team will be doing in Miami. 00:01:15 Speaker 2: Tom couldn't survive an afternoon, let alone a week or a couple of weeks or a month the way some of these hockey players party. And you know, you get the cup for one day, you get to take it to your hometown, you get to do whatever you want to do with it. So the party continues for these hockey players, but in Miami that'll be I'll be interested to see if they tone it down a little bit just because they start playing hockey again on Wednesday. 00:01:42 Speaker 4: Yes, Todd advertising. 00:01:44 Speaker 5: My age, I guess and asking this what is considered a wild party for these USA athletes, like what would you stay up on my dancing drinking clubs? Because that would have like what would be like something wild that they would be participated would make it a wow. These guys are crazy. 00:02:02 Speaker 2: I don't want to divulge any information that I've been given in previous championship runs like just Stanley Cup, but there have been some Goobauchery would be the word that might come up strip clubs. I think the Stanley Cup ended up at the bottom of somebody's pool one time. It's been had drinks out of it. They've had other things in that, so there's you know, they're having fun. They're hockey players. They don't get cheated. Yes, Paul, we can watch. 00:02:32 Speaker 6: This in real time. I'm on the Twitter right now and all last night there's posts of the USA hockey team at a club in Miami and they put the highlights on the jumbo tron that they have basically a TV in the club, and they start playing God Bless the USA, and everyone's holding drinks and living it up. 00:02:49 Speaker 4: Why not? You know, second half of the season starts there on Wednesday. 00:02:54 Speaker 3: I don't think hangovers affect hockey players much, gotta admit. 00:02:58 Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I think they're kind of you know, they're they're built for this. That it's part of the becoming a professional hockey culture. Yeah, really cultural. Yeah, sort of like when you get your teeth knocked out, you don't go. 00:03:12 Speaker 1: I got my teeth knocked down. 00:03:13 Speaker 4: I got to go see the nettist. It's how bad does it look? Okay? 00:03:16 Speaker 2: All right, put me back out there. I might miss a shift stitches, Yeah, all right, I can do it. How many forty two? 00:03:25 Speaker 7: Wow? 00:03:26 Speaker 4: That's nice. Okay, go back out there. I wonder if there's. 00:03:29 Speaker 3: A hockey version of the the you know, we always make fun of the guy who, like in basketball, you know, scores a bucket and then he's pointing like defense, you you, you, you, you gotta do this. I wonder if there's a hockey version of that, Like a dude gets smashed like that and he spits his teeth out and gets back up and he's like, you're on defense, You're really I. 00:03:45 Speaker 2: Don't think that they even flinch with that stuff at all. I just think it's like I'm missing some chick lits. Anybody see some teeth? 00:03:54 Speaker 8: All right? 00:03:54 Speaker 2: Never mind that dude just popped back up, but was like, all right, I gotta keep playing. I just remember doing highlights on Sports Center and somebody would just get crushed and you know, they take him off the ice, and i'd you know, say, you know he returned a second period because he's a hockey player, like his next shift. Yeah, it was just it's expected, Yes, Dodd. 00:04:17 Speaker 5: Can you slap the ice? What would be the analogy to that in hockey to make that big play? Like, there's really no time to do that. The game goes too fast. Outs smacking the ice? 00:04:25 Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think it's a Steve Wojahowski duke moment where I'm going to play defense now, but with your stick second flapping, slapping the ice, slapping the base. All right, So well, come up with the pole question. The NFL combine is back and the annual obsessions begin, hand size, arm length. We know the drill here, but it's more than just the measurements, because you know, when you think about it, you do have the prospects who are working out front offices, are negotiating franchise tags, the Cowboys looking at George Pickens, mapping out free agency, laying the groundwork for trades the draft. So you get thirty two teams represented under one roof in Indianapolis, and the fixation will be the following quarterbacks because you don't have a good rookie class coming in. You might have two. You got one Marquee and you might have another one in Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. But other than that, now you start to talk about, well what about Kyler, Murray, Kirk Cousins two atongua Aya Logo Loa, I mean Geno Smith. There's a lot of different quarterback names that are being thrown around and recent history has probably softened the stigma of the reclamation project because Sam Darnold won a Super Bowl, Baker Mayfield reinvented his career, Joe Flacco turned back the clock. So no longer a punchline. It's actually a necessity for some of these teams. And I think the question is who's going where and how many teams are going to say, you know what, let's wait, let's be patient here, or do you try to solve your quarterbacking problems like Atlanta. I keep hearing it. Atlanta is kind of in the mix for a quarterback now. They have Michael Pennix junior. But where's Kirk Cousins going? Does he go back to Minnesota? Are the Vikings all in on JJ McCarthy? What's Aaron Rodgers going to do? I still think Aaron Rodgers in Minnesota makes a lot of sense because I thought that was going to happen in the off season. Now you're reunited with Mike McCarthy. Maybe reunited not the best word to use with their relationship, but it's one year and I thought Aaron Rodgers played well enough. You know, are you going to be competing for a Super Bowl? Not this next year. But you know, don't do anything crazy at the quarterbacking position unless you feel like, okay, we got somebody here. We know that Fernando Mendoza is going number one overall, but then after that, we're not quite sure. You might not have a quarterback taken in the first round after that, and if you do, it might be a team that reaches a little bit. And maybe it's the Steelers who do that, and you know, sit him behind Aaron Rodgers for a year. But just getting everybody together, like, who's taking a chance on Toua? I don't know how much he's going to cost you, since you know Dolphins are on the hook for ninety nine million dollars. What's Miami doing here? Is Quinn yours going to be a band aid quarterback? Are you going to see what he can do? So there's so many different questions here at that position, and I think that's what's going to be interesting. Here's something that it's not a report, all it is is conversation, and it's Lamar Jackson. Are you going to sign him up for the long haul? Do you want him to be your quarterback? Would you consider trading Lamar Jackson now? Once again, this is just conversation, and maybe it's because this time there's not much going on, so you start to throw out things, speculate on things. What about you know they could do this. Now there's no reporting on this, but I'm curious. You do have a new coach coming in, you know, offensive coordinator. They made it clear that they want Lamar Jackson to be in Baltimore in the off season helping with this team. So you know he's going to go to the Hall of Fame. The question is he going to be a Baltimore Raven his entire career? But it's nothing more than just conversation of people saying what if that would happen? 00:08:37 Speaker 6: Yeah, Pauling, I just saw an article last night. You're talking about quarterbacks in the demand. Malik Willis was listed as the number one free agent of the entire offseason by NFL Network yesterday. Twenty seven years old. Friendly contract, I mean he Chris sim said the other day he could be in high demand. 00:08:55 Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think he's going to cost you a lot more money, like like three years a hundred. Well, now he's well, he's a free agent, so it's not a friendly contract. It's he's going to negotiate. Well, maybe it's a Baker Mayfield Sam Darnold contract, you know, as we usually throw out three years, one hundred million or something. But I agree. I think that he would be an ideal quarterback in a couple of different places. I think he's he's one of those Hey, let's see what you can do. Uh yeah, he didn't perform. Okay, we move on. And I think that he's got a lot of talent. And when he played with the Packers in for Jordan Love, they didn't miss anything. In my opinion, I thought he played really really well. You know, he can do what you want with today's quarterback. But you know, you're there. It's the combine. We kind of poke fun at it. But you know, I will tell you this as one of my sources always tells me who goes to the combine, he's a scout. You know, it's your chance to get in person with these players. Are you really six three? No, you're six one and a half. You know, hand size it does matter at certain positions, which it should. Now, why is it that we don't measure hand size when it comes to the NBA because everybody handles the basketball I would have thought that we would have measurables there for players coming in. I'd be very curious. I'd be very curious how quick you are, not fast, how quick you are? How quick do you jump? Now, we don't get caught up in a combine for the NBA. I know they get rookies using in Chicago, They've done that for years. But those are things I'd be curious about. If you've ever been around somebody who can jump or somebody who can quick jump. Oh man, there's a big difference quick jumpers. That's trouble. That's trouble when they're guarding you. But also hand size, I would think, you know, that would be important, and also how quick you are from A to B and it's only you know, could be five feet three feet, yeah, Pauline. 00:10:56 Speaker 6: I went back a little bit and looked at NBA dot com and they do have a list going back to two thousand and six, two thousand and seven. It's not exactly their version of a combine, but they do medicals on players and it has hand length, height, standing reach weight wingspan for almost every player including I look back, I found Kawhi Leonard's official hand size with they called it eleven point twenty five inches. This was twenty eleven. Yeah, I'm sure it's grown since then. I'm not sure that. 00:11:27 Speaker 2: But you also you get quarterbacks in a room where you can ask them questions. You can you can pick up on their personality, you can pick up on their football IQ. You can put them in front of a chalkboard and say, diagram this play. You can play something back to them and say what happened or what would you do on that. You know, there's just all kinds of things that you can do that you can glean information where it's not just how fast you run the forty because a lot of you know, these players like Fernando Mendoza, I wouldn't throw at the combine. I would just go and interview. I don't think I need to show you anything. I know what happens when the game is on and you're playing. That's the most important thing. But you know, there is no second quarterback that you go, well, it's Ryan Leaf, Peyton Manning. It's not that it's Fernando Mendoza. Go in, be personable, it's in your backyard in Indiana and have some fun with this. Let the other players have the showcase, run the forty, whatever you know you're going to do with strength, bench pressinging, all of that. But his his will be getting in front of these teams. Now, I don't know if he's going to interview with other teams. I don't know how that works. If you go to the combine, does everybody get to talk to you? Because if I'm Fernando Mendoza and I'm the Raiders, I'm like, Hey, that's our guy. Even though you're on the clock. You can't take him yet. But I would be saying I don't want him sharing anything. Yes, Marvin doing those drills at the combine? Is that more so for the smallest cool guys. 00:13:00 Speaker 9: And if you go to Alabama or Ohio State, you guys have seen me for thirteen weeks for the past two years, so you know what I do. If you go to Northern Illinois or Central Michigan, that's what's for right. 00:13:10 Speaker 2: The combine is for the player who is not necessarily known. He gets that opportunity and sometimes you'll get somebody who will reinforce just how good they are. Somebody's gonna get out there and go it. I'll run a forty and then you might run it better than you know previously, or how many reps bench pressing, which I never really understood, like Kevin Durant, I don't even think he could do a bench one hundred and eighty pounds. 00:13:39 Speaker 4: Does that sound about right, Marvin? 00:13:40 Speaker 9: It was people were making it a big deal. It's like, you know, how much of ball weighs? Yeah, not one hundred and eighty five pounds. 00:13:45 Speaker 4: All I need to know is can you shoot? Can you hit your shot off? Yeah? 00:13:48 Speaker 6: Pauli Fernanda Mendoza was reported yesterday will not throw at the combine like you said, but he will throw at Indiana's Pro Day April first at Mellencamp Pavilion in Bloomington. 00:13:58 Speaker 4: Yeah. 00:13:59 Speaker 2: Well, that'll be for his teammates, for them to get an eye, a chance to be under the watchful eye of these NFL scouts. 00:14:06 Speaker 1: Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. 00:14:15 Speaker 10: Hey Is Covino and Rich from Fox Sports Radio Now, in addition to hearing us live weekdays from five to seven pm Eastern, two to fourth Pacific on Fox Sports Radio. Uh Jay TSN Canada, the Voice of Canada. 00:14:56 Speaker 4: How you feeling today? 00:14:59 Speaker 6: Dan? 00:14:59 Speaker 11: It was stealing a lot better until you said Shay Gildess Alexander wasn't famous, because we're already hurting up here, Dan, We're already hurrying up here, my friend. And that's our baby boy. We're so proud of him. He's our boy. We love him so much. He's smoother than the gravy we put on our poutine. So you gotta watch out for Shae. I did appreciate you talking about alex Trebek though, another great Canadian. That was a wonderful segment. 00:15:26 Speaker 2: You just had the level of trepidation you had prior to Sunday's game was what. 00:15:34 Speaker 11: Almost zero. I feel like the narrative about these two teams is that they've been very close competitively. Dan. Since Mike Bdano moved to Saskatchewan in the late eighties and became a Prince Albert Raiders legend, these two programs have been neck and neck for basically decades. Canada won in overtime in twenty ten. You and I are were there in twenty fourteen. You know, Canada beating Sweden. These hockey nations are all great, and the USA has been great for decades. It was no surprise to me whatsoever that they won. I think Canada dominated the game five on five. But once you get to a three on three overtime, Dan, with the skilled players that Canada has and the skilled players that the US has, you saw it. It can end in the blink of an eye. 00:16:26 Speaker 4: Basically, is the United States now the home of hockey? 00:16:31 Speaker 11: I don't know about that, but I'll say this. Your women's team is the most dominant force on the planet right now in terms of international hockey. They have beaten the Canadian women, their only real rival, seven or eight times in a row, including the gold medal game, which was the only close game of those seven or eight games I mentioned. They have been absolutely dominating the Canadians, so so shout out to your women's team. They are the they are the current force in international hockey right now. 00:17:05 Speaker 2: How would you sum up the overall feeling of Canada yesterday. 00:17:10 Speaker 11: Well, here's what I would say, Dan. We were given permission by our federal government to open our bars two hours before puck drop at eight am Eastern time. Anytime Canadians can wake up on a Sunday morning and legally drink at bars, it's going to be hard to make them too depressed at the end of a really good hockey game. I think the majority of the country was pretty drunk by the time ten thirty am Eastern Time rolled around. But I think overall, probably a little sadness. 00:17:47 Speaker 8: Dan. 00:17:47 Speaker 11: I think, you know, Sidney Crosby didn't even play in the game, and in a lot of ways it was seen as his last hurrah. You know, you could one of my colleagues said it best. Sidney Crosby sort of is is the face of winning in the National Hockey League over the last couple of decades. And now that's that's probably Matthew Kuchuk. He's won two Stanley Cups and a gold medal in the last two hundred or so days. So not two hundred or so days, Dan, it's early in the morning. I'm getting my days mixed up. But two years, two and a half years, that's right there we go. So yeah, I think if from an American perspective, this is great for the game. And I don't know if it's going to grow the game anymore. Dan, I think the game is kind of what it is. It's a niche sport in the United States. You and I both know that you're not talking about hok you're not talking about the trade deadline in two weeks. I don't think you're having a trade deadline show. But it is great for the sport in the sense that they got over the hump they were knocking on the door forever. And with this terrific team and this incredible goaltender, Dan, you've got the second coming of Ladislav tretch Yat there. The goalie in the miracle on ice, Connor Helibuck is otherworldly. Three vesnaes, a Heart Trophy. Goalies don't win Most Valuable Players in the National Hockey League too often, and that's what Connor Hallibuck did last year. And on Sunday morning he won them that game. He was that good. Canada got Goalid. As they say in hockey, Canada's goaliad other countries. This time Canada got Goalid. 00:19:26 Speaker 4: Who came up with goalies standing on their heads. 00:19:32 Speaker 11: That term yeah phrase, yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know, Dan, that's a good question. Foster Hewitt, Bob Cole, Jack Buck, I don't know, it's a great question. 00:19:44 Speaker 4: Maybe Garrison Keeler, somebody. Yeah, Gary Thorne, I don't know. I go to the state, but I heard that. You know that. 00:19:53 Speaker 2: And it's usually novices like me will be even standing on his head, like you want to impress the hockey person you somehow know what you're talking about. 00:20:03 Speaker 11: It's like goalies in general are the catchers of hockey. Right, catchers, they're always a little quirky. Yeah, they eventually become either broadcasters or managers. 00:20:15 Speaker 8: Right. 00:20:15 Speaker 11: They always they seem to see the game differently than other baseball players. Goalies are exactly the same in hockey. They become our broadcasters and a lot of times our coaches. They're by far the quirkiest, strangest dudes on the team. And Connor Hellibucks is just the most amazing thing about a lot of your American players is their stars on Canadian teams. Brady Kachuk is the captain of the team that is in the capital of Canada, and Connor Hellibuck is the best player on the Winnipeg Jets. Canadians love these players. But Sunday was tough. It was a little sad one, Dan. But congratulations to you guys. I think it's an amazing team and I think it was. It was a great game and great for the Olympics. Great, just great to have the players back at the Olympics. 00:21:05 Speaker 2: Well maybe it's for four more years when I have you on when team USA beats Canada again, Jay Dan. 00:21:11 Speaker 11: Why again? This shake Gill? Just stuff? 00:21:14 Speaker 7: Can we at. 00:21:14 Speaker 2: Least say he's not famous. He's great, he's he's sports famous. But he's got a data kar Danishian. 00:21:24 Speaker 11: That's fair, that's fair. Well, you know, we'll see if we you know, we'll see what we can do. He seems very happy again. He's just so Canadian, he's so chill. 00:21:35 Speaker 2: But we acknowledge, and we acknowledge. You know, some of your other players, Jamal Murray, right, Steve nas We. 00:21:44 Speaker 11: Got a good team coming to the LA Olympics. Stand we can do it. We can do it. What if we upset you guys in basketball at the at the LA Olympics. 00:21:52 Speaker 4: I will about that. I will have you back on it. I can't wait. 00:21:56 Speaker 2: I will have you back on What impact did Vince Carter have on Canadian players like basketball? 00:22:05 Speaker 11: It was everything, Dan. It was as much as Steve Nash was obviously massively influential up here as a Canadian born player who won two MVPs. Vince was more influential for Chase generation. Absolutely, I mean influential not just for Canadians but for Americans too, and just the way he played. But he did something for Toronto, and he did something for the Raptors. He put them on the map. Tmac was here too, but he was in and out. Vince was here and he made such an impact, And obviously everyone remembers the slam dunk and just how dominant he was. I love that he's kind of becoming an unofficial ambassador to try to round up more popular players for the Slam Dunk contest. I think that's a perfect role for Vince. But honestly, Dan, he was everything Vince wise up here, and and I love that he continues to say great things about the city and the country, So shut up to Vince Carter, not an official Canadian but absolutely an honorary one. 00:23:12 Speaker 4: Jay, thanks for joining us. 00:23:14 Speaker 11: Thank you, Dan, appreciate you. 00:23:16 Speaker 2: That's Jay Enright, the host of Sports Center, and it airs Sunday through Thursday at midnight Eastern on TSN. 00:23:23 Speaker 4: That's Canada's sports leader. 00:23:26 Speaker 1: Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsports Radio dot com and within the iHeartRadio app search FSR to listen live. 00:23:37 Speaker 2: Proud grad of UCLA because he couldn't get into USC, Reggie Miller back on the show how hard did USC Recruit you? I can't hear I can't hear you. I can't hear the fight song. 00:23:54 Speaker 8: Oh oh, I can't. 00:23:57 Speaker 4: I couldn't. You can hear the fight song? You can hear the. 00:24:02 Speaker 7: Fight We're gonna have some fighting words between you. I love the Patroocks, I love the family, all the girls. 00:24:11 Speaker 8: I treat them like family. 00:24:13 Speaker 7: And I'm gonna be I'm gonna say this because I have a little bit of Trojan. 00:24:18 Speaker 8: Blood flowing through me. A little bit, but there is it is night and day between the two schools. 00:24:27 Speaker 7: Okay, it's much harder, much harder to get into the state school than it is to pay someone underneath the table. Pay someone underneath the table. You can pay your way into USC. You're not paying your way into UCLA, my friends. 00:24:46 Speaker 2: But that's where people wanted to get into USC so badly they were willing to pay. 00:24:52 Speaker 8: They just wanted to go to the party. Is a party. 00:24:55 Speaker 7: School San Diego State? Yeah, USC, there you see, Santa Barbara. Those are party schools, Arizona State, party school. 00:25:08 Speaker 4: How hard did us? She recruit you? 00:25:12 Speaker 7: Pretty hard? Stan Morrison was the coach. But I knew I was never gonna go there. I wanted to go to the school. UCLA had the pedigree as growing up you wanted to be a bruin, you wanted to play, be part of the Wooden tradition. So I knew I was gonna go to I wanted to go to UCLA. I was their last choice. They wanted Reggie Williams Georgetown, Antoine Juba, Michigan, and Tom Sheehy. I believe ended up going to Virginia. Those were the three small fours that UCLA wanted. They all went elsewhere, and I was their their fourth choice. So I was the last minute recruit and ended up going to UCLA. But if it wasn't in UCLA, I probably would have ended up either at Arizona State or cal State Fullerton. Those those were really the only options for me. I held I held out hope Ucla came and the rest is history. 00:26:18 Speaker 2: Wait, Antoine Jobert wasn't a power or wasn't a small forward? 00:26:22 Speaker 8: He was? 00:26:22 Speaker 4: He was a point guard, six flo Wait. 00:26:26 Speaker 2: Wait, isn't he one of the top assist guys in the history of the Big Ten? 00:26:32 Speaker 8: I don't think so, is he? 00:26:34 Speaker 4: I thought he was a big assist guy. 00:26:36 Speaker 8: Didn't know. 00:26:36 Speaker 4: Didn't he look like he was a small forward? Didn't he look like prince? Like his hair? Yeah he did? Yeah he did? Yeah? 00:26:44 Speaker 2: Okay, Antoine Jobert antoise n Last night, this was a clue on Jeopardy. 00:26:55 Speaker 8: SGA. 00:26:56 Speaker 11: This guy won the twenty twenty four to twenty. 00:26:58 Speaker 6: Five NBA MVP Award to go along with the scoring title and NBA Championship. 00:27:05 Speaker 8: Someone got it right, right. 00:27:11 Speaker 4: Why isn't s G a famous Uh? 00:27:16 Speaker 7: Probably because of the market he plays in. He's in a small market. But come on, now, that's a little baffling because he is an NBA champ and he is our MVP, reigning MVP, so I'm a little miffed that they wouldn't get that, But again, it's the market he plays in. 00:27:37 Speaker 8: Yeah, it's the market. 00:27:40 Speaker 7: I think this year, if it ends up being Kay Cunningham and it's that same question, I bet you people wouldn't get Kay Cunningham. 00:27:48 Speaker 8: It's a bigger though. It's a bigger market than OKAC Detroit is. 00:27:53 Speaker 2: And then a lot of this is still how you play the game, the style, like what make you unique. You don't have to be the best player in the game for people to know who you are. And really in any sport, you know, we were looking for what is different about you know that guy, you know, Steph Curry is always going to stand out. He's not the best player in the sport, but people know who he is. Well, how many people do you think in the NBA that people know who necessarily aren't NBA fans. 00:28:26 Speaker 8: My household names. Yeah, I would say. 00:28:31 Speaker 4: Ron, so you have Lebron, Steph Katie. 00:28:36 Speaker 7: I think people know Kevin Durant, Luca, I think they know. I think they're starting to know Victor wmbin Yama just because at seven four. That's a different look for people. I think a lot of people know Jalen Brunson because of the market he plays for for New York. 00:28:53 Speaker 8: And then after. 00:28:54 Speaker 2: That, I mean, yeah, I know, and it's and it's tricky. Although I could say that about baseball. I could say, how many players are household names? And it might be Otawni, it's gonna be Aaron Judge, but not anymore, not anymore. But how many guys are household names in baseball? 00:29:22 Speaker 8: Not many? 00:29:22 Speaker 7: I think I think more in basketball because you can see the guys. You can make it the case in football too, which is even worse because they're covered up. 00:29:33 Speaker 8: Right. I think we know the handful of quarterbacks. 00:29:36 Speaker 7: But if a if a George Pickens, or uh if. 00:29:43 Speaker 8: Even Jalen Hurts. If Jalen Hurks walks into a room, well people really know who he is, not really? Yeah, and he's a Super Bowl MVP. 00:29:52 Speaker 4: Yeah. What was your favorite part of the All Star Game? 00:29:58 Speaker 8: I love the competitive that the guy he's brought. 00:30:01 Speaker 7: You know, When I was up there with the commissioner when we were giving out the trophy for the young guns, I believe it was the stars that ended up or yeah, the stars that ended up winning it. 00:30:11 Speaker 8: Chat, Holkerl was like, did we play hard? Yuff Edge, did we play hard enough? 00:30:15 Speaker 7: I was like, absolutely, you guys played hard and brought it And it was surprising that like he said that to me, did we play hard enough? 00:30:23 Speaker 8: And I loved the competitive spirit. 00:30:26 Speaker 7: Now that last game wasn't great, but I thought the old timers left everything out there in that third game to get him there. Kawhi Leonard went absolutely crazy. But I love the competitive spirit and I think we'll get the same thing next year if they keep the same format, because you gotta remember Johannis didn't play, and he would have played the way Victor set the tone. Jannis would have done that, and I believe sj would would have done that. 00:30:53 Speaker 8: Both were hurt. 00:30:54 Speaker 7: So if they keep this same format and those guys make it and they're not hurt. Remember the world went zero for two and they should have on gay one, but that unbelievable shot of the buzzer. So I love the competitive atmosphere. That was the best thing about it. Saturday night was great. The three point competition was fantastic. To me, I've been telling you this for what eight nine years? That is the best event always on Saturday because it's so easy to follow. Make miss moneyball rack where you're getting them from, and the fans can follow along. 00:31:29 Speaker 4: Do you think Devin Booker missed those on purpose? 00:31:33 Speaker 7: No? 00:31:34 Speaker 8: Are you kidding? Why would he miss it them on. 00:31:36 Speaker 4: Purpose to give Dame you know, a chance to win? 00:31:40 Speaker 7: But I loved, I love I was praying for his demise. Oh, I am going to be using that. That is going to be my mantra if someone crosses me, I'm praying for your demise. 00:31:52 Speaker 8: Oh that is cold blooded. 00:31:54 Speaker 7: No, he did not miss those on purpose, and that's what made it so thrilling is he had his money rack. 00:32:01 Speaker 8: This wasn't just a normal rack. 00:32:04 Speaker 7: He put the money rack as the last rack for him, and usually you make three out of five in your money rack. 00:32:12 Speaker 8: He only made one of five. So no, he was not trying to give it to Date. 00:32:17 Speaker 4: Who would you rather shoot like Dame or Booker? 00:32:22 Speaker 8: Both? I think both have a beautiful stroke, beautiful follow through. 00:32:30 Speaker 4: I'm gonna thrown in there. 00:32:34 Speaker 8: Do you see the way con started the content at. 00:32:36 Speaker 7: Twenty seven as a rookie, not afraid of the big stage and not afraid of the lineup that was to follow him. He set the stage. It's just that these other guys. I mean, I pray, I pray, and you know, Steph has come out and said, I'm gonna be a part of it. Dame will be a part of it. I want Carl Anthony Towns back in it. 00:32:58 Speaker 8: On Oh, I know, book, I. 00:33:03 Speaker 7: Want this should be a Tournament of Champions next year. 00:33:08 Speaker 2: We're talking to Reggie Miller, the Hall of Famer U c l a grad and of course Coast to Coast Tuesday. 00:33:15 Speaker 4: Did you graduate? Yeah? Okay, Fritzy said you didn't. 00:33:21 Speaker 5: That's cold. 00:33:23 Speaker 8: Don't know, Fritzy, and he's trying to come between us. Fritzy, let's catch. 00:33:27 Speaker 2: The Nickson Calves NBC and Peacock NBCSN with Noah Eagle. You were there with the Celtics and the Lakers. What's going on with the Lakers? 00:33:41 Speaker 7: I think, uh, defensively, it will always be an issue with them going forward. I know what they're going to do offensively, but I'm going to give more credit to Boston in that particular game because how they started the game defensively is how you want the Lakers to play after you, and they just. 00:34:01 Speaker 8: Don't have the personnel to play that way. 00:34:05 Speaker 7: I think Jaylen Brown set the tone guarding Luca along with Baylor Shireman. 00:34:10 Speaker 8: That was his main job. 00:34:12 Speaker 7: Pick him up full court, turn them, work them, and they just got into them defensively. And until the Lakers find an identity defensively, they'll find you know, they'll be able to score with whatever team, but come playoff time, they're gonna have to find the defensive identity. 00:34:33 Speaker 4: Luca cries too much. 00:34:37 Speaker 8: Do you want me to comment on that? 00:34:40 Speaker 3: You know that? 00:34:41 Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean does it work? 00:34:44 Speaker 8: Reg And this is coming from a crier. No, this is coming from a crier. 00:34:52 Speaker 4: No, you're in oc You're an original crier. 00:34:56 Speaker 8: Right, And it doesn't work. And I made it a point. 00:35:00 Speaker 7: Especially come playoff time, you can't talk to the refs. You can't get into a battle with him because when every possession matters and you're trying to conserve energy, wants the playoffs hit because the emotions are so high, you cannot. You got to pick your battles of where to expend energy. And if you are always on the referees case and complaining, you know, we highlighted it in the game when you know he felt that there was a voul he stayed on the ground. 00:35:30 Speaker 8: It was a five or four. 00:35:32 Speaker 7: Opportunity and it was a three point. You just you can't do it. You'll never win that. 00:35:36 Speaker 4: Battle, you know. 00:35:39 Speaker 2: Speaking of the Celtics, they play hard, they really do. And I think Jalen Brown deserves a lot more attention that he's getting because he's always been in Tatum's shadow and Tatum might be coming back here soon. And if they're able to work him in the lineup, a lineup that has really contributed off the bench, Pritchard's been wonderful. You know, they're the team to beat in the East in my opinion, if Tatum is able to come back and be anywhere near what he was. 00:36:11 Speaker 7: Listen to me, Theodore, because you're right on everything you just said. But I'm going to say this, with or without Tatum, even if Tatum doesn't come back, the Celtics are the scariest team in the Eastern Conference. And the reason being is there's no expectations because people thought this was going to be a gap year about Tatum and the way that Jalen Brown his name certainly should be in the MVP discussion along with Kate Cunningham. Those two, I know SGA and I know Jokic. I give both of them all their flowers. But what Kate has done in Detroit, and especially what Brown has done with the Celtics, with or without Tatum coming back, the Celtics are a real threat to win the Eastern Conference because they're well coached by coach Missoula. 00:37:00 Speaker 8: They're deep, they can play a number of ways. 00:37:02 Speaker 7: They can play big, small, and I think the pickup of the Vossevich down low, he can play with us back to the basket. He can knock down threes. They play a certain way. They're gonna jack up a lot of threes. Most of their shots come from sixteen feet out or further, and they get after you defensively. I'm just telling people. I know they're high on the Knicks, and they're high on Detroit, and rightfully so I give that. And Cleveland's on their way up as well. The people pay attention to Boston, and to your point, if if Tatum does come back, I think it'll be a seamless transition because he's been over there all season long and he. 00:37:46 Speaker 8: Doesn't want to disrupt anything. 00:37:48 Speaker 7: I think he will come in and play and people are like, oh, he's gonna disrupt rhythm and he's gonna. 00:37:54 Speaker 8: Throw it off. 00:37:55 Speaker 7: I would much rather have an all NBA guy play twenty minutes than not at all. So if he does come back and this is his decision only, I think it's only going to help Boston. 00:38:06 Speaker 2: How nervous were you interviewing or President Barack Obama? 00:38:11 Speaker 7: Look, the night before I practiced in the mirror, my cadence of questions that I didn't want to flub. But once I got there and the lights hit me, it was showtime. I was honored to have a chance to, you know, interview him and talk hoops. I loved the little dig about his bulls beating my beloved pacers, but I had to remind him, Look, he's gonna talk about the push off? 00:38:40 Speaker 8: Was it a push off in Utah? And Brian Russell? 00:38:42 Speaker 7: Right, yeah, And he said no, So I wasn't a push off against MJ No. But I was honored to have a chance to interview the former president. 00:38:54 Speaker 4: How do we get rid of tanking? 00:38:59 Speaker 7: Is there a real I mean, I hear all this have the worst, you know, fourteen teams playing it. 00:39:06 Speaker 8: Just whatever happened? 00:39:07 Speaker 7: Just to pride, and I know this is a generational type draft that we have coming up with anywhere upwards of ten to twelve players that could change your franchise. 00:39:18 Speaker 8: I don't I don't have an answer, Theodore, because. 00:39:21 Speaker 7: What what some of these teams are doing, it's it's mind boggling. 00:39:26 Speaker 2: But but if I look at the Spurs and Pistons three years ago. 00:39:32 Speaker 7: Now, and okay, they did exactly what these teams are. 00:39:36 Speaker 8: Doing, yet it changed. So it does. 00:39:39 Speaker 2: It does work. But what if I said everybody's got the same odds in the lottery. 00:39:44 Speaker 8: That would change things? Then you wouldn't have it. 00:39:47 Speaker 4: Yeah, you wouldn't have it. 00:39:49 Speaker 7: I mean, why should a team like you. I could understand Indiana a little bit because of what happened to Halibert. 00:39:56 Speaker 8: It is a gap year for them, and when you lose your best air. 00:40:01 Speaker 7: But the things that he saw, what Utah was doing before Jaron Jackson had his surgery, not playing and fourth quarters him and mark it in. 00:40:11 Speaker 8: I mean, come on, man, come on, it's just it's bad. 00:40:15 Speaker 7: It's bad for the game and the basketball guds never they never reward you when you mess. When you mess with them, it just doesn't work out that way. 00:40:25 Speaker 2: He's here to fix tanking or the dunking contest. 00:40:29 Speaker 7: The dunky would be easy if we just got name guys to do it. I mean, that's an easy fix. Guys's got to be willing to do it, which they won't. And I hope this happens. And I know we're trying. And when I say we meaning NBC, we're trying to get a one on one competition for all start next year. If they won't do the dunk contest because they don't want to mess with their brand. You really think they want to play one on one in a packed auditorium with the potential of getting embarrassed one on one, but they won't do a dunk contest. 00:41:04 Speaker 8: No, No, I hope. 00:41:07 Speaker 4: I wonder if we brought back Horse. 00:41:11 Speaker 8: I would much. 00:41:12 Speaker 7: I would pay money to watch s g a versus Aunt. I would pay money to watch Wendy versus Jannis. I would pay. 00:41:21 Speaker 2: But we're not getting that. We're not going to get that. Why not because the brands, everybody's so nervous about that. 00:41:33 Speaker 8: What happened to old fashioned competition? 00:41:36 Speaker 2: What happened is we're old I would go on the floor right now for a loose ball right now. 00:41:44 Speaker 8: They do that. They do that, I would need. 00:41:47 Speaker 2: Help getting back up, but I'd go on the floor after that loose ball, I'd be gritty. 00:41:54 Speaker 8: They would come out with the wheels. 00:41:56 Speaker 2: The Paul Piers, the Paul Piers. I'm wheel chair. All right, we'll have fun there with the Nixon Cleveland. Don't they play once a week? It's like, okay, see in San Antonio. 00:42:08 Speaker 4: Don't they play once a week? 00:42:10 Speaker 7: This is the this is their final, the final one. 00:42:15 Speaker 2: Seven point thirty Eastern A double dip on Peacock and NBC Sports Network. 00:42:20 Speaker 7: Thank you, reg, I appreciate your Theodore gol come on go rules Pride of u c l A
