00:07:41
Speaker 2: It's how it's gonna go.

00:07:44
Speaker 3: Well, I gave you another head start because Q didn't have any R and B hits one one. But that goes back to when I was a young fellow and he had gotten booted out of Europe and came to Chicago. He was actually living in Chicago then and Leslie.

00:08:09
Speaker 2: Gore, you guys remember that name.

00:08:12

00:08:18
Speaker 2: Didn't know that. I bet you didn't know that.

00:08:27
Speaker 3: But that just made a whole nother thing for Q opened the world up to him, and he was He took a job at Mercury. Then then he came to the West Coast and everything else was history.

00:08:42
Speaker 2: Everything he touches like but no not.

00:08:48
Speaker 3: But however, everything I touched was hitting the top of the charts.

00:09:00
Speaker 2: Called blessings blessings, real blessings.

00:09:05
Speaker 3: And I did a lot of stuff with Cue, but these these four tunes that I just needed was like.

00:09:15
Speaker 2: Unbelievable. And then you know, I got bigheaded. What happens.

00:09:26
Speaker 3: I don't need to kill no more because everything else I was doing were hits. Everything I touched was the hit everything, and and I grew and the relationship that I was, that that was established with Q was a call from him every day when it became like that until he died.

00:09:55
Speaker 2: You know, so straight ahead que.

00:10:01
Speaker 3: Pretty much everything I've done, it's been a hit. It's a blessing. You.

00:10:10
Speaker 1: You spoke earlier about a group called Earth Wind and Fire.

00:10:18
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you know.

00:10:20
Speaker 1: You said you had a story about Boogie wonder Land.

00:10:25
Speaker 3: Okay, Well, I don't know if you cats are old enough to remember the early recordings of Maurice.

00:10:36
Speaker 2: White him completely by himself.

00:10:39
Speaker 3: Well, Maurice was a jazz drummer. Okay, never heard that, literally no, And one of the jazz cats that you possibly remember was Ramsey Lewis. Oh yeah, but Maurice was too noisy because he plays like this, Yeah, he'd.

00:11:15
Speaker 2: Be in his own world, you know.

00:11:17
Speaker 3: But for the classy pianist what you doing, but he could play as he finally stepped away before the ram. Maurice White was the drummer at Chess Records. Mm hmm, you can remember Chess Records all of the stuff from Chess Maurice. So anyway, the studio that we recorded in what's called Paul Serrano's studio, and she cargo and Paul was like, Reese, gotta check out this young brother, Benjamin Wright Man.

00:12:10
Speaker 2: Every day.

00:12:12
Speaker 3: And this is very laid back, not gonna say much. So I start getting calls from Maurice's Hey man, Hey, Weese was sading man. Three minutes later nothing. Then, what kind of motherfucker? This calm never says anything. However, he his little brother, Fred White drummer and I played in the same band together, and I just got time getting calls from Maurice because he never says anything. So when didn't call, he say, hey man, I catch something for you. Oh no shit. The song tuned out. It was for a group called the Hutcheson Brothers something like that whatever, but didn't like how they performed on the song. Okay, and then the arrangement was a little suspect a little bit, but you gave it to me. I just got divorced.

00:13:23
Speaker 2: I was broke. Mm hmm. That's what it did to you.

00:13:27
Speaker 3: It's called no money, it's called and no, honey, you definitely get that's how you get the divorce. Wait a minute.

00:13:46
Speaker 2: But at that time there was.

00:13:48
Speaker 3: No ash in the air, and and all the other kids, and but and I was not a wild man. M I have to let this out.

00:14:01
Speaker 2: All my life. I've been a church man, amen, all my life. Like me, okay, And.

00:14:11
Speaker 1: We're trying to bust me, man, No, try to your audio man. You know how you recording the strings and eat that mic and a certain sweet spot to the same thing.

00:14:23
Speaker 2: Same thing.

00:14:25
Speaker 3: Anyway, you got divorced, and you broke and broke, and the phone rang. It was Maurice who this time had a song.

00:14:38
Speaker 2: And I had to.

00:14:44
Speaker 3: I had to walk over to the studio in Chicago a couple of blocks and he was doing something with another big crew. After the love He's gone, okay, mhm uh.

00:15:06
Speaker 2: Oh, it's great.

00:15:11
Speaker 3: You arrangement. You know who the arrangement was. Anyway, he was a friend of mine, okay. And I stood there and I listened, like, tell him this is bad. Rees gave me his song walked home. I'm excited because I finally got something from all ree White and I lived in Chicago and Reese and his family lived two streets over. But I, you know, was much older than me, so you know, we went hand m But I went to work. Man, I went to work, and about three days later I was finished because I was broke. I'm hot to the studio. People don't like me because I call all the musicians in the world do my sessions, big strings, big horns, all the superstars. We did it, and that song happened to have been will Give wonder Land. Now the emotions end up on it, but it didn't start out with them, and they were pissed because Maurice didn't give them the song. But Maurice says, you know, now this's got to be for the fire. Okay, yeah, that was it, and yeah, tell me what nine guys in their friend and Fire. I had about twelve horns and all the strings that we weren't working that day. Boom, come on, come ye all yeah, and you know you listen to the orchestrations on that. That's pretty heavy. Man and Reese had no idea whatever was going to be. But boy, when that thing started, that cat stood over in the corner with his mouth opening. It's like, damn, this got to be for the fire. Wasn't for the emotions anymore.

00:17:39
Speaker 2: It's got to be for the fire.

00:17:43
Speaker 3: They're still unhappy today today because they figured he took a hit from them.

00:17:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, and those don't come around every day. Yeah.

00:17:53
Speaker 3: So that thing took off like crazy and still happening to day. A lot of my stuff I hear all the time.

00:18:05
Speaker 2: Was that your first big hit? No, what's your first big hit?

00:18:11
Speaker 3: You won't remember this. I have talked to your parents. Some are viewers enough, well you guys. For me with Chess records, I go back to then. You know, we didn't have all the consoles like this of it. I go way back, man.

00:18:33
Speaker 2: But I was happening.

00:18:34
Speaker 3: God was on my side, and everything I touched became a hit. I can't give you names, but everything I touched became a hit. And then I started getting calls from the Great California, who seemed like every week I had to come to California.

00:19:04
Speaker 2: I did not like l A.

00:19:08
Speaker 3: I'm really Chicago. I'm an hoolum. Yeah, fighting and ship that's what I did. But I was a musician on the side.

00:19:17
Speaker 2: I used a hoodler first. Yeah, okay, all right.

00:19:21
Speaker 3: When they started putting the Hulu guys together, ask kicker Benjamin right put him in there.

00:19:29
Speaker 2: It was always fighting. Were you mad at somebody? No, I didn't have to be mad. It's a fight, it's and that's how you know. I'm not trying to be funny. Yeah, but that's how you're wired.

00:19:48
Speaker 3: It was in Chicago. That's what you did in Chicago. Yeah, but start coming out here, and I didn't like it being out here. The only thing I fell in love with. La X had built a new Hyatt on Sunset Boulevard, whatever the street, run right into the Higaert.

00:20:15
Speaker 2: That street. That's all I knew.

00:20:19
Speaker 3: Coming in La Los Aega, Los Yenega, need the airport, coming right down Los Seneca.

00:20:26
Speaker 2: Cab driver turned me on to Fat Burger. When the Fat Burger said, shit, I can move out here. Yeah yeah, And that was it.

00:20:43
Speaker 3: Do you know take take about three days to finish the writing, go back stopping Fats Boom next week it's called come in La No problem. I don't mind coming to La now because I'm gonna get a Fatsburger boom.

00:21:01
Speaker 2: That was it.

00:21:02
Speaker 3: That's the routine. Then it got sold that I was coming out here like every other week, wagging charts.

00:21:14
Speaker 2: It was happening. I did a lot of music out here.

00:21:18
Speaker 3: Then I'm giving you my whole story. But I start having to come out here quite a bit. Now it's not three or four days, it's a week and two weeks and three weeks I'm writing. I'm just writing. So I call my then wife baby sell everything were moving to LA and forgive me.

00:21:53
Speaker 2: I'm just using her language. Nigga, are you crazy?

00:21:59
Speaker 3: I never heard that from her.

00:22:00
Speaker 2: What I didn't say me?

00:22:02

00:24:48
Speaker 2: And still is.

00:24:50
Speaker 3: Mickey Stevens.

00:24:54
Speaker 2: Then, hey Mick, what's up? What are you doing this? They just moved here. See how God works.

00:25:04
Speaker 3: I have no money. I'm sorry. I mean he would all this intelligence. I didn't have any funds. Okay, he said, you have got to be the Temptations music director. I didn't want to be anybody's music director. I had been to Dell's music director and whatever. I knew that figuring me, I'm just being Benjamin. Hey man, I don't be no mondfucking Temptations music director. I ain't got no money, but I didn't want to be no Temptations music director. It took about a month for me to finally come to the conclusion, your ass is broke. I took the Temptations job. What a job because the Temptations had their music director, had lost all the music. Oh and at that particular time, everybody they had an orchestra. Okay, I took the job, which meant I had to rewrite the book. No problem, I could do that. That's a pischy cake. We wrote the book and they talked to Temptations, talked about me like a dog. Excuse expression little young motherfucker. Okay, and I'm talking more shit than them. You motherfuckers couldn't even go to work without this, you know what I'm saying.

00:26:34
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you know.

00:26:36
Speaker 3: And they man wrote the book. And then finally the Temptations had to go to Detroit. And everybody's heard about Tim's got new music directed, so go there and they introduced me to everybody. When there was an old man sitting in the corner, and it took me over to him. All attempts to me, said, Pops, let me.

00:27:09
Speaker 2: He said, I know who that is. I've been calling him and he had but.

00:27:20
Speaker 3: Driving from Chicago to La no communication.

00:27:25
Speaker 2: He's calling your old house.

00:27:27
Speaker 3: Sure, hey, man, that was Charlie Atkins, if you would look him up in the in the book, it was a dance duo call Atkins and Cole tap dancers. He took me on his wings and made me his son. Them there's another world. I saw a whole other world.

00:27:53
Speaker 2: Whatever.

00:27:54
Speaker 3: But he introduced me to a lot of people, and I began writing for everybody. My charts was off the chain.

00:28:05
Speaker 2: And then he died.

00:28:09
Speaker 3: And I was stuck out there by myself in Detroit.

00:28:12
Speaker 2: Now you're in Detroit, you're in that light now you're still like I.

00:28:16

00:29:04
Speaker 2: Then against so I became cheesy beggar.

00:29:09
Speaker 3: I only write where I want to. Yeah, yeah, you know it's nothing wrong with that. Yeah, can relate. Yeah, And then you know, all of a sudden, pockets look like footballs.

00:29:23
Speaker 2: You know what, you know what I need a couple of footballs, man.

00:29:29
Speaker 3: You know, because I was I was waiting to hear out you got that Rose Royce because I well I saw she knew.

00:29:50
Speaker 2: You know, He's just go jump in the car. Yeah, car is a car. Yeah that's that's all I meant to them. Uh uh. They later learned.

00:30:04
Speaker 3: It's a rose rice right, don't don't spill nothing back. Then I have to say my kids are wonderful. Oh, my kids are wonderful. Okay, uh, but that was happening. I left Gladys and she she she didn't handle that well, calling me all the time, Dan, would you do this?

00:30:36

She doesn't talk to me like that. She talks to me like I'm about I'm a three year old.

00:33:19
Speaker 2: Dad. This guy's want to meet you with you, okay, ma'am? Mm hmm. So today I'm here, Yeah, and I'm happy about it. I'm happy about it. Were happy to have you.

00:33:34
Speaker 3: Yeah, I met some wonderful cats since i've been here.

00:33:40
Speaker 2: Piece of cake. Let me ask you a question, Yes, sir, your style of arranging.

00:33:48
Speaker 1: You know, a lot of us came up watching admiring somebody who Who did you pull from the arrangers that you you you heard when you were growing up and the music that you were listening to.

00:34:00
Speaker 2: What gave you your like, your style?

00:34:05
Speaker 3: What's your brother's name? His name is Edward Kennedy Ellington. That's Duke Ellington's name. Well, I met mister Ellington and I think I stood there with my mouth open. It's like, oh my god, this is Duke Ellington. Yeah, I ain't even Quincy. I've been working with Quincy, but this is Duke Ellington to talk to me about twenty thirty minutes. And he died maybe a month or so after that. And there was no question that whatever this child is, the wife was pregnant, it's a boy. He's going to be named.

00:34:55
Speaker 2: Duke Ellington. So that particular son, his name ed Would Kennedy Ellington. Right, Wow, that was my idol. Yeah, it's my my idol. Okay, slip through, cool.

00:35:16
Speaker 3: Ladies, man, smooth talk ship all the time. I think that's where I got mine from.

00:35:28

00:36:17
Speaker 3: Benjamin right, Oh, the boogie Wonderland guy. So all of the heavies knew me about from from music. Yeah, and they were giants. Yeah, but maybe I was a giant too. I didn't know there was writing.

00:36:37
Speaker 2: God.

00:36:38
Speaker 3: God just touched me. Man, I'm still writing to this day, to the day. I don't know. You might have some ship up your sleeve, but I've been blessed.

00:36:53
Speaker 2: Mm hmm.

00:36:54
Speaker 1: I mean, as you say, giant, you you would have had to be a giant. Quincy Jones caused you or one of the most important projects of all history.

00:37:05
Speaker 3: But it wasn't the most important then. Michael Jackson was important, but he hadn't.

00:37:15
Speaker 2: Done any kind of music like what we did. Well. It was also.

00:37:22
Speaker 1: It was extremely important for him to be successful at that moment in time.

00:37:30
Speaker 2: He needed that in a real way.

00:37:34
Speaker 3: Okay, but he had Quincy Jones and then he had you well when she brought me in. But Guency didn't know what he was getting.

00:37:45
Speaker 2: But think about that though Quincy isn't a arranger himself, right, oh yeah, superstar. Right. And then but he calls Benjamin Wright yes to say help me with X, Y and Z. But he didn't do any writing.

00:38:01
Speaker 3: Quency didn't write one note after I came under scene. He didn't write one note. It's like Benjamin Hey, Benjamin Hey, Benjamin.

00:38:18
Speaker 2: Film. That was it?

00:38:20
Speaker 3: Could he write? Yes, unbelievable writer. But he fell in love with how I did whatever. Yeah, and that was it man up until he died. Mm hmm, I loved me some Quincy Jones. It's a bad cat.

00:38:43
Speaker 2: Cat asked her about the Bars and your time with them and the records that she worked on and wrote with them.

00:39:00
Speaker 3: Dubon du Bones was doing an album and Irish Gordy called me in. Mmmm, I don't fun put these old hulus oh Man, super hudos. Uh. They used to fight people song was to fight. It didn't bother me because I'm always packing.

00:39:56
Speaker 3: That I would be their next project. Yeah, I know, even with Bobby before there was the switch.

00:40:07
Speaker 2: No no, no, no, no, no no.

00:40:10
Speaker 3: I never worried about that. Uh it's a lot of times. That was the one that what motherfucker can I shoot today? That's where my head was. But uh, they were cool. They come to the house, they'll be very orderly, the whole bed. But then they go to the offices and the whole bit and they turn over tables and ship it's just hulums. But not with me, whom we didn't play that man and y'all made hits, Yeah, got hit. I did several hits with the barm and you pissed your kick.

00:41:03
Speaker 2: That's what I do. Yeah. So I just grew. I've been growing for years, just.

00:41:12
Speaker 3: Growing every year. I haven't been very active in the last year, but I've still done some work, you know, so I'm still working, you know. And then I don't know if you know that or not. But my darling daughter, Ashley, Dad, I got these guys. I'm going like, okay, what is this to tell me about your cats?

00:41:50
Speaker 2: Dad?

00:41:50
Speaker 3: You got to meet him, you know how fast she talks being the solemn old man that I am. I say, slomn old man because so everybody knows what's sam. I'm one birthday from eighty mm hm oh yeah yeah, I'm way up there.

00:42:34
Speaker 2: I got a fucking machine gun because the man mine with me too.

00:42:36
Speaker 3: I mean, I'll be respectful, but now I'm not coming over there without mind.

00:42:40
Speaker 1: I got it.

00:42:40
Speaker 2: No, no, no, I got a real machine gun. And I was in the war too. Thank you for your servant, thank you so, and I took it from the war. I'm gonna take this away.

00:42:55
Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, I took your saying man, so I never worry about anything.

00:43:02
Speaker 2: I never worry about somebody messing with my daughters and.

00:43:06
Speaker 3: My sons. And well we got a son. Your big brother, Freddie's a senior master chargeant in the army.

00:43:17
Speaker 2: And mister bluff.

00:43:20
Speaker 3: And if it's anything he wants to do is knock you out. That's his mentality and he's qualified. Yeah, yeah, but I've never been that kind of hoodom No, my days in Chicago and whatever.

00:43:41
Speaker 2: You know, I never played the gangster role.

00:43:47
Speaker 3: I was always qualified to do it. Yeah, but you know, I did music man all my life. God has blessed me to do music.

00:43:57
Speaker 2: And you didn't bring that into the music business with you mhm. But you did what it was in the studio.

00:44:04
Speaker 4: I'm about to say, I mean, because you know this music but is to make you. It'll make you go there sometimes it'll make you.

00:44:09
Speaker 2: Know what I mean.

00:44:10
Speaker 1: You have to remind people, hey, my money was due Thursday. Well I never had that kind of problem.

00:44:17
Speaker 3: Okay, I've never had that kind of problem, never had a collection problem. I think it's where's my money, that's it. And I guess because of personalities and a big you know, I was not somebody to deal with in terms of no, my music. My money was always there. I'm not trying to be threatening to anybody that's not me because my kids.

00:44:45
Speaker 2: Don't know me that way. Mm hmm, don't you know me. It's a nice man, That's that's true.

00:44:58
Speaker 3: Come on, tell the truth. Because I got nothing but love. Don't keep all of it. Actually, don't keep all of it. You know, you got a lot of brothers and sisters.

00:45:21
Speaker 2: Thank you. That's fine.

00:45:22
Speaker 3: But let me say something about Madam Ashley. She has opt to create her own way, which I'm proud of. I'm very proud of. She's somewhat independent. I say somewhat because I ain't loaning her no more money.

00:45:48
Speaker 2: But she knows how to be very frugriate. She can, she takes care of business. She's she's a hustler. I love it.

00:45:59
Speaker 3: Everybuddy in the household loves Ashley. Everybody and not just ship back and watch them all. She's gonna have a problem with the two logirls. She's definitely gonna have big problems because they didn't even they don't take nothing.

00:46:20
Speaker 2: He is gonna get you work, is what he's saying. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:46:26
Speaker 4: How do you how do you go from I mean Obviously, music is it, you know, it's it's it's going to get you through different things. But your career of like playing with James Brown all the way that years later writing.

00:46:43
Speaker 2: And arranging for justin Timberlake.

00:46:46
Speaker 3: First of all, I never wrote for James. I used to stand on the side of the stage, okay, and watch him. I used to stand on the side of the stage and watch his band rehearse. I knew the music director in the whole bed in the times when he had four drummers and all of that, you know, four drummers at the same time, at the same time. What James was in another world and and and he never made the rehearsals. The music director to handle everything. And I was a young cat stand inside the stage watching. And I remembered when James hired Fred Wesley. You know Fred, I don't trumball, Okay, okay, it's Fred Wesley. Fred used to play with a group called the Master Sounds. Fred played with Count Bassie, He played with Duke Ellington's serious.

00:47:54
Speaker 2: It's serious, real real player.

00:47:58
Speaker 3: And that was something that James Brown needed because most of the horn pleasant band couldn't read. Because just play may see or where heself couldn't read no charts. It's great soloists in a little bit. But James always had a music director who was sharp, rehearsal band or whatever. And I would stand on the side of the stage and watch, pay attention, pay attention. I learned a lot, a whole lot, and then I grew into that.

00:48:33
Speaker 2: But let me back up.

00:48:36
Speaker 3: They threw me out of high school at thirteen years old. It threw you out, threw me out. You didn't do nothing, No threw my black ass out. But I'm not back nothing. They just they just threw you out. You don't want your here. It's amazing. If you don't believe me, I'm just asking. Okay, let me say it again. They threw my black ass out. So when they threw you out, that's how you end up around the music.

00:49:11
Speaker 2: Well.

00:49:12
Speaker 3: I was playing with the with the high school band director's band. Okay, he had a little organ. I couldn't play with the ship. But my big sister had a piano, great big old piano, and my mother died in her early forties. My big sister became my mother, but she would always leave me instructions.

00:49:44
Speaker 2: Junior, don't get on my piano.

00:49:48
Speaker 3: I couldn't wait for her to leave home, and I called myself jamming, couldn't read. It was good, Yeah, like a gym on that piano. It got to the point where I knew I had to learn some music, and I stopped preparing. Then I remember in Chicago. Anybody here from Chicago? Okay, they had something on the news a few days ago about nine degrees below. I went to the Chicago Conservatory Michigan Avenue when it was nine degrees below.

00:50:40
Speaker 2: No car.

00:50:43
Speaker 3: And shoes were not qualified for that kind of weather, right, you walked?

00:50:47
Speaker 1: No.

00:50:48
Speaker 2: I caught the.

00:50:48
Speaker 3: Train and you know, the bus to the train and trained to downtown Chicago. The good thing is that the train let me off right under the school. But basically I had to fight that hog nine degrees below.

00:51:12
Speaker 2: I don't miss that. Let me give you this a quick story.

00:51:16
Speaker 3: I walked in there and they say, can I help you? I see, yes, ma'am. She said, Now this is a music school, I know, ma'am. Do you know any music? No, ma'am, but I'm willing to learn. So she looked at me. It's like wow, and she considered how that weather was outside. She said, okay, young man, follow me. She took me to the library of the Chicago Conservatory pull out of test and he said, oh lord, I know I'm not gonna make this, but God was on my side, and I wiped out that test in record time. Now I had been studying little books and whatever. I took it back up to her and the first thing she said, oh, you decided not to take it. I said, I took it. Let me see what you got. She started looking at the paper work. I didn't know the name of the songs in the little book, ma'am. I don't know the name of your songs, I say, but I can sight sing him. She perked up, like what, because let's take number one whatever it was.

00:53:09
Speaker 2: He didn't whatever. I read it conci sing number two, number three, number four. She said. Stop.

00:53:24
Speaker 3: This was a Thursday evening school was about to turn out Chicago Conservatory on Monday morning. I was a student from Chicago consulvantary tell me God couldn't make it work, absolutely, and everybody in.

00:53:43
Speaker 2: The school knew I was the new guy, and that was it. Man.

00:53:49
Speaker 3: Then the stupid band I was playing with decided that we should go to Europe.

00:53:55
Speaker 2: I didn't want to go to Europe. I'm in school.

00:54:01
Speaker 3: They weren't in school, but they could all sight sing and read a little bit.

00:54:06
Speaker 2: But they were all druggies.

00:54:07
Speaker 3: I never had drugs in my life, but there was a band packed my stuff. Went to Europe, and after about a year we fell out. Motherfucker.

00:54:16
Speaker 2: We get back to Chicago. Don't call me.

00:54:18
Speaker 3: Don't call me either, motherfucker. I'm like, guys, we need to stay together. See, I ain't have any money. So I come back to Chicago, and I took a gig at what's called the High Chaparral, which was the biggest black nightclub in Chicago. Started making money. Hired all of them, all the guys that were in the band wishing Yeah yeah, because they were broke.

00:54:44
Speaker 2: Hired everybody making money.

00:54:48
Speaker 3: Parkers look like footballs every day.

00:54:50
Speaker 2: Yeah yeah yeah. And how old are you at this time?

00:54:53
Speaker 3: I was still young twenties, but I was creating such a a big thing in Chicago that the word was getting to the West coast and spreading. I didn't like L, but I love the money.

00:55:18

00:55:34
Speaker 3: But that's not the same. It is the one that was on Loss the Street, the street baby los Enica and Olympic. I think cross the street.

00:55:54
Speaker 2: That was it for me. I knew how to walk to there.

00:55:57
Speaker 3: Yeah, those fat Burgers had an you're parting in my musical career. I'm about to start eating fatback before I go to the studio. I remember I was with Taco Bell frutista.

00:56:29
Speaker 3: Get you get you a little frutista, little strawberry frutista or something.

00:56:33
Speaker 2: Man, if you're doing this so it mixed up a little vaka if you're feeling it, if you're really feeling somebody, you know.

00:56:44
Speaker 3: No, that's something right there here.

00:56:46
Speaker 6: I am.

00:56:47
Speaker 2: I'm bout to turn eighty mm hmm. I have never had a drink in my life. Never had a drink.

00:56:54
