Angela Renee Simmons talks NEW SINGLE “Run To” w/ Jada, mental health & growing up hip hop royalty

Joe and Jada

Fat Joe and Jadakiss sit down with Angela Renee Simmons, who pulls up to Joe and Jada to talk about her new single “Run To,” a record featuring Jada and Resa about mental health, faith, and finding your way through the maze. Signed to Rough Riders, Angela breaks down what inspired the song, what her creative process looks like in the studio, and why she's been working on music for over two years before putting anything out. The conversation gets real when Joe opens up about his own two-year battle with depression, living in a bungalow at the Delano while fighting his mind, and spending years talking friends off the ledge at 6 in the morning. Angela shares what it was like growing up as Rev Run's daughter and the moment she recognized her father was a rap superstar. Joe also tells the story of the first time he heard Run DMC in junior high school and watched a thousand Bronx kids all look at each other at the same time knowing hip hop had changed forever.

Joe and Jada is now STREAMING ON NETFLIX!

00:00:49
Speaker 2: You think of a lot of things. Uh.

00:00:52
Speaker 1: You think of a great mom, think of a family orientated person, a creator. Think it's somebody that works out stream, workout, all kind of working out. You think it's somebody that takes nice trips that I'm jealous of. You think it's somebody that's very fodaginny. You think it's somebody that whenever she puts her hand on anything, it flourishes, it thrives, it does well. I think it's somebody that does a lot of brain. I mean it comes from a good family, a good background. Ladies and gentlemen. Makes some noise for Angela Renee Simmons, My intros is getting better and better.

00:01:48
Speaker 2: That was a wonderful intro. I'm not saying.

00:01:52
Speaker 3: Is that new to Renee Simmons or it was like, you don't think it could be new.

00:01:57
Speaker 4: I don't think she probably we never heard Angela Rene is my artist name and angel.

00:02:06
Speaker 2: Your hardiest name. Yeah, that's what that's all right, different levels.

00:02:10
Speaker 3: I heard it two three times this morning. I'm like, all right, so we're running with that.

00:02:15
Speaker 2: That's my real name because my middle Oh that makes sense.

00:02:19
Speaker 1: I had to actually do. I was nervous, you know, James do it. I don't say Simmons or do I just had the neighbors. I don't want to mess up Simmons. You gotta say Simmons, but you got to say this.

00:02:30
Speaker 2: More of them things, y'all.

00:02:31
Speaker 1: Two times time a fella with the pepnis Fell people.

00:02:40
Speaker 3: Could get a two times fella. They get him night proper team to tim O fella. You missed that, Jordan boy. You was like they left without beyond. Yeah, that boat sails that boat, that boat sail bag saved for Thursty. That's stop save Lit's sen You grew up royalty to us. You know, we look up to your family so much on another level that you were just born into this role like your family is pretty much in hip hop coaches, because I take hip hop like it's a religion, to be honest with you, and so there's four fathers, there's people who we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for your family, right, and and so when we see you growing up, it's like almost like the Kennedys or something. We looking at you like she it's real tall. Well, I say, now, not like the candidates, man, I mean honestly, no, no, don't give me another good Paris.

00:03:47
Speaker 2: Not the candidates. The Kennedy's are big. We know they are.

00:03:51
Speaker 3: But I don't like that good Paris Rockefeller not that one either. All Right, I understand where you're going. No what I'm like, you obviously don't understand.

00:04:03
Speaker 2: I do want to do the fu you know what you like? Listen to me, man, that I know it's I understand.

00:04:12
Speaker 3: But growing up before everybody's eyes, and that's even before social media. Yeah, how tough is it to be perfect? How tough is it to like everybody expects so much from you? Everybody just looks at you like.

00:04:26
Speaker 2: He's gonna ask you some crazy things. I'm I'm doing the most decent questions in the world. Is it to be perfect? It is?

00:04:39
Speaker 4: It kind of a sick what It's true, that's the question. How do you ever want to be perfect? I think the world wants you to be perfect. I'm by no means perfect. I mean it might look perfect, but like on the inside, everyone got their own stuff going on, you know what I mean.

00:04:53
Speaker 2: So when you say perfect, it's like to find perfect? What do you mean by perfect? Like what I mean?

00:04:58
Speaker 3: Like everybody expects so much to they did as she was a baby. We looked at you like all right, they're gonna you know.

00:05:04
Speaker 2: This is what it is. Yeah, you know legacy. So they're like, what's next to you? How do you compete or like compare to that?

00:05:12
Speaker 4: And I think the most important thing is like coming from it, is not to compare yourself to that and to just be who I am. And our parents really like instill that in a set of young age, like you don't have to even be of this industry, like you know what I mean, Like we were never forced into it. We didn't have to be in it. We didn't have to be on TV growing up. We have to do none of it. My parents are like, want to be a doctor, Go be doctor?

00:05:32
Speaker 2: You want to beat it?

00:05:33
Speaker 4: Like whatever, and you could change your career at any point in you're like even now, like if I just want to go do something else, like I'm not confined to one thing, confined to one thing, Like I don't have to do that. So I feel like being perfect. You know, your family doesn't. My family doesn't force that on us, but the world has the pressure of saying be perfect. But no, for me, I don't look at it like that, you know what I mean, Like, I don't push put that much pressure on myself. I just do what feels the best. You know, at a mental health level, it's so important to put yourself in that position where you're stuck being and being someone who you're not just for everybody else.

00:06:06
Speaker 1: Yeah, how important is it to talk about mental health on the public platform?

00:06:12
Speaker 2: Very important?

00:06:12
Speaker 4: I mean even run to you. It's like, I'm really big on where do you run to when you're going through things? Where can you where you run?

00:06:18
Speaker 5: You?

00:06:19
Speaker 2: What does everyone have? I run to God if anything else?

00:06:21
Speaker 1: You know what I mean?

00:06:21
Speaker 2: Like I got to run.

00:06:25
Speaker 1: For the people, that for the viewers and the people on the rack. She's stepping into music now. She got the new song called Run.

00:06:33
Speaker 2: That's what she's talking and that is like a very and that is like a highlight. I have to say say something else.

00:06:45
Speaker 3: She was like, Yo, I'm coming on, by the way, people, there's a long list of that's the fuck. I mean, there's a long waiting list of people, superstar actors, who's trying to get on this show. And you was like, Joe, I'm coming on this show. Be there next week. Don't worry this. And I guess I assume my royal position. I said, right, Queen is coming. She's sitting down and we it is what it is. And she told me she did a song with you. I guess what made you want to rap and now and happy?

00:07:21
Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say it's more poets poetry, right, because I ain't hearing the words.

00:07:26
Speaker 2: You ain't hear you, No, I ain't. We're gonna hear it together for sure, right, but it's spoken word.

00:07:32
Speaker 4: I mean, I just I'm a creator and I'm a creator and I went in the studio and I went with what came from inside of me, Like there's other levels and layers to me that people haven't met yet.

00:07:43
Speaker 2: And so this is another side. Your voice is ill. And when hit maker called me, you know hit makers behind this make a but.

00:07:53
Speaker 1: Reached out to Jada, and he reached out and they were trying to explain.

00:07:59
Speaker 2: What kind of only it was.

00:08:00
Speaker 3: I can't really understand that they sent it to your I'm like, oh no, this is this survive.

00:08:09
Speaker 2: It's a top down vibe, you know, here flowing. You know better than me, I asked some four verses. I never get it, you get it. I'm so thankful for my first I ain't some shit got that all live. I can't get this moatherfucker to do nothing. That's cat ladies and gentlemen. You know that. So you so you just said being creative.

00:08:31
Speaker 3: You know, I been hearing that a lot lately and I and I appreciate that, and I love that because for many years, I feel like that has gone away from the culture where it ain't just a quick fix to make money.

00:08:45
Speaker 4: It ain't just people like y'all want to just express myself. Yes, this is near to my heart. I mean it's a project I started working on over two years ago. But I have like twelve or fifteen songs. I'm actively in the studio. I'm signed with Rough Rise, which is like huge. Make some noise for that build. Yeah, they did it buying the building. Yeah, and that that alone is just exciting for me. So I'm stepping into a whole new world. But it's something that I've been doing and I'm actively in the studio and there will be a project, but we started.

00:09:19
Speaker 2: We'll run too. And what inspired run to.

00:09:23
Speaker 4: When I got in the booze honestly just thinking of life and life circumstances and what's going on in mental health and like where can I go? And you know Reson's on the track the girls singing and listening to what she was talking about. I'm like, yo, this makes sense for that, you know, I mean sitting there and really thinking about what people are going through.

00:09:40
Speaker 2: People mask their pain all day, we all do. We're human, but.

00:09:44
Speaker 4: It's like where can we go? How do we like express it? So it just came from like real emotions, raw emotions, things I'm going through, things that I feel like other people can relate to and maybe don't always talk about.

00:09:56
Speaker 2: But music's a great place because it's the things you listen to.

00:09:58
Speaker 4: Like for me, the first thing I do in the morning, I'm on jazz, I'm listening to meditation stuff, So like this is something to me I can listen to the first thing in the morning because it's just positive and it pushes me to the next level, Like what's next?

00:10:09
Speaker 2: You know, is there a project? I said, I heard you say you've been working on it, but you're going to release. Yes, there's a project.

00:10:17
Speaker 1: I won't rush the single though. Let this single, let it marinate and short numbers. No, we got time for the project. The single is the push right now? Yeah, the video you ain't see the video, Yeah right, I ain't seen nothing yet. We gotta premier everything blind man.

00:10:34
Speaker 2: Nobody show me ship. Oh, we gotta show you everything in the blind.

00:10:39
Speaker 3: The blonde objects close, appear closer than the mirror of whatever that ship is. I know, you know it's crazy, right because when we talk about mental health, like me myself, I went through depression for like two years, real god, you know, couldn't sleep, couldn't you know.

00:11:04
Speaker 2: I went through it, through it, through it, through it, through it, and the whole time, you.

00:11:09
Speaker 3: Know, the challenge ain't even a place right, So say, the first year of my depression I went. The luckiest thing I think I had about my depression was that I was rich at the time, so at least stable. Yeah, that hell I was at the Delano. I had the bungalow for like rented for a year. So I'm just in there, depressed, coming out pool new strangers every day. I lived in the Delano in Miami, in the bungalow, and I was just like, wherever you go, you can go to the most beautiful place when you're going through depression. That she can't mask it because it's all in your mind. So I'm saying, your mind is like a Q So it's like you fighting your mind. So I noticed, I said, damn this one thing. You're a gang member. You got to move out of Compton. Hey, move out of Compton. They won't kill you. But when you fight in your own mind, canness. It don't matter where you go. You go Private Islands. I did all that shit, private Islands, all that was still depressed, still fucked up, still, you know, And it's like a Rubershew.

00:12:12
Speaker 2: One day you gotta figure it out. You gotta crack that coder.

00:12:15
Speaker 3: He kept telling myself like, yo, Joe, you're smart, come on, figured this out, Joe. Every day fighting myself, Yo Joe, you're smart man, figured this out.

00:12:23
Speaker 2: Come on, you know how to get out of this.

00:12:25
Speaker 3: You know what's going on because I knew what was going on, like not only being depressed, I'm losing everything. Like you know what I'm saying cruel is that everybody looking at Joe, he not the same weaker, just this that, So you know that mental illness is real. But I told him before. He hates what I repeat stories, but it's important. You know, when I was going to see therapy, it was ninety nine percent women and me. I was the only man in there going to get therapy. It was it was just all women and me. And I ask the doc one day, I see your doc, don't saying why is.

00:13:05
Speaker 2: No many here? She was like, well, these are all women.

00:13:08
Speaker 3: They got rich husbands that feel like every time they husband leave out of town, he's doing the dope. You give not seking the king told he's not seeking the kingdom. You got to seek the kingdom. Yes, yes, we can't forget that one. Anytime, temptation, any bad thing, whatever, just say yah, I'm seeking the kingdom and get up at it.

00:13:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, but that's real.

00:13:33
Speaker 4: I mean, depression is like they say, lack of expression, and it's like you versus you. So it's like anytime you feeling down. It's like you really got to look at yourself, you know what I mean. It's like, what am I doing that's not expressing myself enough? What am I not expressing? What part of my life am I not?

00:13:49
Speaker 2: Like? What am I not doing?

00:13:51
Speaker 4: Because like I get I think sometimes and I think so many people even around me, have experienced depression, and I've been through things where it's like what do you do now?

00:13:58
Speaker 2: Like what am I not doing?

00:13:59
Speaker 4: To get my stuff to the other side? It's such a push and so that like to me, that's a part of like the inspiration behind the music. Like in what I'm putting out right now, you're a.

00:14:09
Speaker 1: Mom, will, producer, entrepreneur, creator, now you're making music.

00:14:14
Speaker 2: How you gonna balance all of these things? I don't think there's a perfect balance to it.

00:14:19
Speaker 4: I think it's more about just allocating time, like, Okay, I'm gonna put this much percent of time here is here. It's like looking at your hundred percent and splitting it up and given one hundred percent of each time of each of those percents.

00:14:31
Speaker 2: You know.

00:14:31
Speaker 4: I learned that from a mentor over time, and I was like, that makes a lot of sense because you can't give one hundred percent to everything without breaking it down, like I'm'm gonna give twenty percent here, but when I give that twenty percent, I'm gonnaive one hundred percent at that twenty percent.

00:14:41
Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying my highest level. So it's just about giving that time when I have that time. Yeah, I don't work like that. Like me.

00:14:48
Speaker 3: I'm like, uh, I'm like crazy, I'm definitely crazy. No, no, I'm figured this.

00:14:55
Speaker 2: What's your version of crazy? Though? I'm not crazy? Crazy, but I'm crazy. I'm crazy, but I'm crazy.

00:15:01
Speaker 3: I mean, I'm crazy. But the two Chains came over here the other day and he sat in the seat. He looked at me. He says, nah, watch you all all the time, and I just think you just he said, nah, you crazy, and he did. The first guy made me realize I'm crazy because too Chain don't play like that.

00:15:20
Speaker 2: But he told me that. I looked at him myself his word. Man. I went home.

00:15:23
Speaker 3: I said, you fried, I said, I wonder way, I said to change says. He said, nah, I'm really figuring it out, Joe, you crazy. And so I got in that calling and pulled out of here. Head in the jersey. I said, nah, Yo, you know son Joe, you fry man, because I got we got a crazy dude that's in this building.

00:15:49
Speaker 2: He's with O g Wan and jay Z every day. My man, God, I know Gordo.

00:15:53
Speaker 3: Since the eighties in the streets, shut out to go shout out to my brother Gudda and gold Is Fried. Okay, everybody know he crazy. Everybody you know know why. You know he's crazy. Everybody know he's crazy. One day he looked at me and Yo, Joe, you know you Fried?

00:16:09
Speaker 2: I said, the.

00:16:14
Speaker 6: Kettle calling the kettle the pot whatever like he said. I said, Yo, crazy, you call it the pot calling the kettle?

00:16:30
Speaker 2: Black bro. That man hit me with that. Yo, Yo Joe, you know you Fried? I said, what stupid fright? My whole life.

00:16:41
Speaker 3: I got problems, but I got problems in a good way, though, in a good way. You good crazy, damn good crazy.

00:16:49
Speaker 2: But I need that. You know she's coming. I know she dropping the record. She's worried. She I want to talk to Pop something. We're talking into illness. No, no, don't. We've been talking about this. I know it's the really ship. Everybody's going through something. I'm going with you.
