Yo, me go me bait, it's the Internet. You're busy. Let's
do this for November ninth, twenty twenty three. For the next hour or
so, let me help you sort through the world of gaming on Game Mess
Mornings Live with me Jeff Grubb. Today, Sony is delaying a bunch of
games, Spider Man two is a red hot hit, and David Zaslov is
jumping on the Games as a Service bandwagon in twenty twenty three. But first,
please join me and welcome me today's co host the Game Mess Mornings.
It's Jason Bonelli. Everybody, Jason, how are you doing? Year's Internet
doing great on a Thursday morning. As I was saying before we started,
Daylight Savings time kicking my butt, But I think I'm finally over the hump
and ready to talk some great gaming news with you. Miss mister Grubb.
Are you ready for me to be a pedantic asshole? I got good news,
love, Daylight Savings time is over. See We're in standard time now,
so you can just feel like, oh, I don't have to worry
about daylight Saving time anymore. And just to talk yourself out of feeling anything,
I gotta say I've been I've been feeling pretty good about it because the
going back an hour and getting that extra hour, the kids kind of got
on a decent sleep schedule for the first time and a half a year.
I'm like, okay, I'm gonna make the most of this. Of course
that's already kind of going to shit, but yeah, that was a good
couple of days. Our kids are on a very strict bed by seven,
seven thirty up at six am, six twenty am thing, So this backwards
hour, they still go to bed the same time, but they're still getting
up. Oh boy, that hurts time. Ouch. Okay, so five
o'clock in the morning, dead, I have to go to the bathroom.
Yeah, go ahead, you're seven and five. Now, you don't have
to tell me anymore. We'll just go do your thing and go lay down.
Please. It's for the rough week, but yeah, that would be
rough. Coffee's here, We're good, I'm refueling. Let's do this.
Oh that's a good coffee mug too. He's got a red Ranger coffee mug.
If anyone wants to screenshot that and send that the jan tell him what
he's missing. He'll appreciate that. Mason recognizes Jason. It's right, yes,
exactly. Was that as a kid, like, that's Jason, so
I'm into him? Oh yes, my my, my mother had painted and
painted him on my wall, my bedroom wall, and that's a big bust
with his name and a coin. It was awesome. Oh yeah, That's
the reason I got into the Power Rangers was there was a Jason and MI
name was Jason. It was very easy. We were talking before we got
started about Super Mario RPG. You were on your mellow shirt getting excited about
that game coming out soon? Is it like? Wait, is it a
for me? It's okay. Soon as that game's out dropping everything else,
I'm playing Super Mario RPG again, I don't care it Is it the same
for you? Uh? Yes. I have been reviewing a lot of games
between in the last couple of weeks and I have been able to make it
so all of my reviews will be done and then all I have to do
is play Super Mario ORPG on November seventeenth, and I'm very very excited.
It looks really good. It looks good. It's it's uh, it's a
dream come true for someone who this was the game that got me into turn
based RPGs. I got him late right, Corona Trigger passed me by Final
Fantasy three now six passed me by. On the Super Nintendo, I was
all Mario and easy platform or stuff. Played a lot of Bubbsy as a
kid. It was weird, but Mario because it was Mario in a new
format. So I'm like, all right, I like Mario. I'll try
it, and then the rest is history. It's a very formative game in
my in my childhood, pretty much same here where I was like aware of
Final Fantasies and the Dragon Warriors, and I was looking over it and I'm
like, it would be nice to be into those, but I'm not gonna
like take a risk and waste my money or my money waste the couple of
times my parents get me games a year on asking for stuff like that.
I'm gonna stick with Mario. So then you know Super our rpgc that in
the magazines, and then you see it getting really good reviews in the magazines.
Well we're getting this, and even that's like I think I rented it
a bunch of times before we ever got it, just rented it so many
times, and it was like a surprisingly decent rental RPG where yeah, I
mean, you're probably not gonna beat it in the weekend, but you can
get to a lot of the good stuff in a weekend, and then you
can just take the risk of them. Man, let's see if we're gona
get it again, and if I see our save file is still there,
And a lot of times it wasn't, and it wasn't that bad, Like
let's just start over. This is a great game. And so I played
it so many times that way where where I didn't never got to the Indian
Plane it that way, and that happened later. But yes, the good
rental game for sure, and my not blockbuster was called the Video Update.
It was around the corner from my house. I could walk there. I
got in good with the cashier, so we would do the here I'm returning
this. Here, I'm renting it again. Oh, that's got a good
deal. They were cool with me for that, and like probably since twenty
twelve, twenty thirteen, I play RPG once a year, whether it be
on a on an emulated handheld or the Sees Classic. I think if it
wasn't already on there, I modited to be on there. Yeah, that
actually is on there. Remember that. Yeah, yeah, so I once
a year I loaded that up, but I hadn't done it yet for twenty
twenty three. So perfect timing, perfect timing excellence. All right, let's
explain what we do here most weekdays, I, Jeff Greb, will help
piece your gaming life back together. That includes breaking news and maybe even some
of our own original reporting. For all these topics, I'll get the input
of a bona fide expert who will make me look smart. If you were

on YouTube. Hello YouTube, Hello, And I was like, wait did
I say that? I was like a flashdac Wait did I turn on YouTube?
It's that's the first thing I did, so seriously, Hello YouTube.
All right, we have a lot to get into, so let's start the
morning mess with PlayStation five has shipped four point nine million units during its Q
two twenty twenty three. This is from Sophie Macaway. Games Industry Dot is
sort of wrapping up the Sony financials and specifically PlayStation financials. Sony has released
its second quarter results for the financial year, showing an increase in overall revenue
due to a rise in its movie, music and gaming businesses. Sales were
up eight percent to around eighteen point five billion dollars. Net income was down
twenty nine percent to about one one point two one point three two billion dollars.
Game in network services, meanwhile, was up thirty two percent to around
six point three to one billion dollars. For the highlights, Sony attributed the
increase in sales during the second quarter to growth in its games and network services,
music and picture sectors, while also experiencing an income decrease in its financial
and entertainment, technology and service segments. Looking at games and network services more
closely, growth was attributed to an increase of sales in hardware, non first
party titles, including add on content, and the impact of the foreign exchange
rates. Software sales were up twenty six percent to three points one to six
billion dollars, representing sixty seven point six million copies sold across PlayStation consoles.
First party titles represented four point seven million units. Of this total was Spider
Man two, selling more than five million units worldwide as of October thirtieth.
You might be wondering, how the hell does that math work out? Well,
Spider Man two came out after the end of this quarter, so they're
just throwing in Spider Man two for a little bit of fire like flavor to
like let people know, hey, next quarter is going to be even bigger.
Sony said this was in line with its expectations and represented a twenty five
percent increase over the number of PS four units sold in the second quarter of
the fiscal year ended March thirty first, twenty seventeen, during which twenty million
units of the console were sold. Just a few small things here, and
really we should probably get to the next door relatively quickly the next two stories
because they're kind of all tied into this, But Sony is hitting its stride.
Everything is lining up for the PlayStation five to be everything it needs to
be for Sony. It's I think it's got to be all good news because
there are a lot of question marks about what the lineup looks like for Sony.
But even that those question marks haven't turned into anxiousness yet. Right.
People are like a little bit like what's coming down later? But right now,
everyone's pretty happy to be playing Spider Man two and to get a PS
five and have all this pretty strong library of games that have already come out
for it, pick those up, and then know that the third party support
is going to be there. Everything's working in Sony's favor right now, regardless
of those question marks. Right. Yeah. So, last time I was
on here, we talked about how they thought that the stock of the PlayStation
five was finally where they wanted it to be in detail, would be able
to find it wherever you wanted to during the holiday season. They picked a
good year for that because this is one of the strongest overall years for game
releases from January to December calendar years. So this makes perfect sense to me,
and that number I think will only go up the amount of quarterly consoles
they sell, And yeah, they really are in a good position. I
think there's one sector of first PlayStation titles that people might be worried about,
and we'll get to that, I think, But as far as general overall
concern, no, I don't think there's very much of that at all.
Would they rather there be some new, shiny first party titles to talk about?
Sure? I mean, there are a lot of dormant franchises in PlayStation's
library that we'd like to hear a little more about. But people are happy
with Spider Man two sold crazy as that number says right there, and those
announcements will come when they decide to make them showcase state of play what have
you. I personally am not worried about Sony. I know that they're going
to end up first selling the most consoles this generation like they always do,
but yeah, I would like to see some more first party titles too.
Yeah, And I mean, we can look at net income being down twenty
nine percent, but it's still one point three two billion dollars for a single
quarter. That's a decent amount of profit to make. And you can imagine
net income going down is because they're spooling up a big marketing campaign and they're
spending a lot of money on these live service games, which we will we
will get to in a second what's happening there, And they're spending a lot
of money to market Spider Man two specifically, So it's like, yeah,
net income down twenty nine percent compared to the year before, but those bets
are going to pay off even bigger, especially through this holiday season, at
least when it comes to Spider Man two and selling consoles. The live service
games still a question, but the you got to spend money to make money,
and that's seems to me where they're at right now. Remind me where
the the PlayStation plus rate hike happened? Was that in this quarter? Will
that be first in next quarter? God, that's right, when did that
happen? That might have been in this quarter? Let's see if they even
talk about that. Yeah, I think that was in this quarter. So
that because that would explain the network service sales being up so much because people
maybe as did not cancel that they didn't have as many cancelations as they expected.
That's what they said. Yeah, so that could be a big part
of this too, which the live service thing, which we'll get to in
a minute. Maybe they're hoping people will come back and that's why they're delaying
live So but yeah, that's that's that's a couple segments away. But yes,
I think I think the PlayStation Plus adjustment might have had some impact on
that network and service sales part at the very least. Yes, let's kind
of get to this next part Marvel's Spider Man two sold five million units last
month. This is from Alex Hopley at gam Reactor. That's a big number.
Marvel Spider Man two is the fastest selling first party PlayStation game in history.
They said it hit two point five million sales at launch. In the
few weeks since its first released, it managed to top more than five million
copies sold total. Pretty good, huh, pretty good, And I'm not
surprised. I mean that Insomniac and Spider Man just makes money, and they
did it for a while in the two thousands, they stopped doing it,
and now they're back again. Playing through it right now, I'm actually got
a code late, but I am reviewing it for a mmrpg dot com.
Loving what I'm playing so far. I personally am not the best at the
swinging mechanics, Like I get it. I just side every once in a
while I get messed up and I run into a building or something. So
having that glider has really helped me get through this city, not to mention
the excellent fast travel and the combat is out of this world. I really,
I get it. It makes a lot of sense. It's nice to
see a game sell this much. And then have the critical acclaim and the
juice to back it up. So this is all well deserved and makes total
sense today. Yeah, I mean to put it just want me Super Mario
Brothers. Wonder was the fastest selling Mario game and sold about four point three
million copies in a couple days, more than what we're talking about here.
This is last month, so these both those games came out October twenty second.
I want to say that probably that's fuzzy you I think that's right.
So this game had about, you know, nine to eleven days worth of
sales something in that range, and to have five million copies sold in that
time is bonkers. It's just it's huge, and really it is. Spider
Man was the franchise that has been doing this for Sony, so the fact
that it's continuing to do that, it's just maybe the little surprising thing here
is this was just on PlayStation five and that just did not slow it down
at all. Right, And you mean to continue the Wonder analogy. Wonder
sold less on a much larger console install base. There are way more switches
out there than the RPS fives, and Spider Man two still outsold it with
less time and less consoles. It's amazing. Yeah, I mean, Spider
Man is one of those characters. It turns that is actually up there with
Mario and Mickey Mouse and Superman and all that stuff. It is. Spider
Man is a globally recognized and beloved care you name, Yes, exactly.
So them being able to capitalize on that, like, yeah, you could
say that that's true for a lot of and it's true for Superman, and
we haven't had a game that's been able to capitalize on that. So having
its Omniac come through make a game that people really really like. It is
a Game of the Year contender, at least in that top ten, and
so people are going to gobble this up. Turns out that's exactly what's happened
here. And you know, this is a game that probably will sell for
they will have legs a lot of PlayStation games that do do very well out
of the gate. You know that you see him reduced price in the sales
slow down pretty quickly. That that's fine, and that's what they sell to
their audience. And they found that audience right away and all those people show
up on day one. That's what you want. But Spider Man two is
going to be the kind of game that when people are buying at PlayStation PlayStation
five of two three years from now, well, they're going to do it
to play this game. Still. This is going to be what they pick
up. So even though like Mario Wonder is going to have legs as well,
that game is going to keep selling they always do. Spider Man two,
I think, is to be right there with it. It's probably probably
won't have quite a strong legs as Mario Wonder. Almost nothing does as compared
to two D Mario games, But I think Spider Man two is going to
be so close it's going to be indistinguishable. And really, in the end,
Spider Man two could end up selling just as many copies as a Mario
Wonder, which is going to end up around twenty five million copies sold.
So that's big numbers for a game. Huge. I think both of those
games could sniff ten million this holiday season. Yeah, but oh yeah,
I don't think it's out of the realm with possibility, which is amazing.
It's amazing, all right. And then the last little bit of tip bit
of information from Sony out of its financials, Sony is delaying six Live service
titles. This is from Alex Hopley at Game Reactor. Again, a lot
of gaming companies have big plans for live service projects. We'll talk more about
that in a second, as well. As we reported on recently, Warner
Brothers is making a big push into the model. But even with so many
live service games and the works, not even not every one of them is
going swimmingly. Sony's reportedly delayed six of the twelve live service games it has
in the work. During an earnings call, Sony President, CEO, president,
CEO, and CFO Hiroki to Toki confirm some games were pushed back for
quality reasons. We are reviewing this. We are trying as much as possible
to ensure these games are enjoyed and liked by gamers for a long time.
Of the twelve titles, six titles will be released by fiscal year twenty five.
That's our current plan now, just real quick. Originally they said we
want to have twelve titles and the games of Service Realm released by the end
of fiscal year twenty twenty five. As for the remaining six titles, we
are still working on that. That's the total number of live service and multiplayer
titles and mid to long term, we want to push this kind of service,
and that's the unchanged policy of the company. It's not like we stick
to certain titles, but game quality should be the most important thing. I
think that's completely fair. But so you know, this is them like kind
of having to reckon with the fact that this is a not going to be
of snap your fingers and suddenly you have twelve live service games that everyone's loving
and playing. It's going to be a long slog to get to that point.
And even when many of these games come out, doesn't guarantee they're going
to be liked at right when you launched them. It's going to be a
big push after that point to get them to a place where people really like
them. That's happened with a lot of live service games. So the strategy,
it's something that Sony says they're still committed to. But how are you
feeling about it. There's only so many players to go around and so much
time to go around. So if you want to launch twelve live service titles
and expect your most fervent fans to play all of them, like I only
play one live service game at the moment regularly, and that's Fortnite, and
I still go days without even being able to jump in for a match.
So to expect their fan base now, granted, you'll have like, if
there's like factions the Last of Us, if that's one of them, you'll
have the Last of Us fans that play that. Just hypothetically speaking, I
don't have any information here. If there was a live service game set in
God of War universe, somehow you have the God of War people playing that,
Spider Man playing that, so on and so forth. So I get
how they think they could build like a foundational base and then maybe attract people
with you know, limited time events and stuff like that. But still,
twelve is way too damn many. It's too many. Six, I would
even argue is too many. So I hope that they have some sort of
you know, I like that they want to focus on gameplay or game quality.
It definitely, you know, live service has that that connotation to it
that people are they release live service games to make the quick buck. Yeah,
they can be. They can be very profitable when they're successful. So
it the fact that they're not rushing these twelve games out is good. But
at the same time, is there enough money disposable income to go around to
make all twelve titles successful even with this half and half delay. I just
don't see it. I mean, I think we have to assume that they
know and we know, and that people making these games know not all twelve
of these games are going to succeed. In fact, it's I think they
at Sony probably believe two of them might make it out of the maelstrom that
will happen as these games are launching and the whole and that's that seems to
be the strategy though it is. You know, you're putting things a bunch
of bets on the craps table, and and you're trying to do it strategically
so that one of them pays off really big and then pays for all the
other failures. And I think that's fair to an extent. It's just right
now, as we are looking at Sony's uh, you know, schedule of
game releases and coming out of their last PlayStation showcase, which was pretty heavily
focused on live service games, or at least the suggestion of those, and
and had a dearth of the kind of previous games that when people are used
to from Sony First Party and say, Okay, we know you're saying you've
said previously, you're spending more money on those traditional kinds of games while also
spending a ton of money on this stuff separately. This is a new initiative
with a new budget. But I mean there is opportunity cost and a lot
of these studios are kind of making decisions like, hey, there's a lot
more money if we pitch to Sony that we will make a live service game,
and it could. It feels like it still could be a distraction.
We don't know if it will be, but right now that's how it feels.
And it's like, boy, live service is in a place where everyone's
sort of recognizing it's not the answer, and Sony this feels like a half
step. It feels like a half measure of Sony recognizing it's not completely the
answer, but they also have so much momentum behind it that they feel afraid
to abandon it. I guess, do you think all twelve of these games
actually end up coming out? No? I think I think a acceptable or
a reasonable rate would be of the twelve six launch and two of two or
three of them succeed, So fifty percent launch rate twenty five percent success rate
of the initial twelve is what I would think, and that's probably generous as
well. Also too, this is like it is a half step, but
it's a safe one because we don't know what these six games are. They
haven't announced them. They haven't even or they haven't even said if it's one
they have announced that is being delayed, like for example, they own Bungee.
Now they say twelve live service titles? Is Marathon included in that?
I think they previously have said that it's not included in that twelve. Oh
they did say that there's twelve. There's twelve besides. Oh man, it
just it just makes less and less sense to me. I don't understand where
they're gonna get all these players from. I don't. I don't get it.
Yep. I mean, you know, it's the video game business is
like it's big, but it's because it's a relatively small industry, even relatively
small audience. It's getting bigger all the time, but we just spend a
lot of money. We're passionate enough that we kind of each person, person
by person, tends to spend a lot of money on video gaming across all
the stuff that they play, and so I mean it comes back to your
original point of there's only so many hours in the day, so many games
that people can play. As someone chat said, twelve live services game of
games is about how many that they believe the industry can support total, And
it's like, yeah, kind of, that's I mean, if we like
count them out, like right now, how many are running? I mean
Fortnite, Apex Legends, the very things that are happening a Call of Duty,
it's like three right there. And then like PUBG is like big still
in a lot of other territories, but not so big anymore. But that's
still a big live service game. Fall guys. Yeah still yeah, okay,
yeah, Rocket League, I mean there're I guess I mean, as
you start like branching out into different genres, I think, okay, it
could probably support more than twelve. We probably can do more than twelve,
but how many more than that? It's and then and then if you if
you get into like other like like Disney Dream My Valley, that's technically a
live service game because they're expanding and adding free content. You could purchase uh
in game currency for the star paths to unlock new items, technically a live
service game even though it's a you know, animal crossing style life sim So
then you have to figure out how many of these games have these kinds of
currencies that may qualify them for live service even if they're not on their surface
a live service service title in the traditional respect. It it just again,
it just the more we talk about this, the less sense it makes to
me that they would put this much backing into live service, which is funny
because of what we're going to talk about after the break, Yes, exactly,
and just to like keep things in perspective here before we do go to
a break. I get why Sony makes some of these decisions because they spend
a lot of money on their very big games, and they're very good at
that, but they're sort of tapped out on what they can do there.
They could probably start up a new studio, but there's no guarantee that studio
will be able to replicate the success that they're getting from Insomniac, Naughty Dog,
all these other things. They probably will keep doing that, though they
probably will slowly start up other studios to try to take on those kinds of
projects, but that takes time, and again, no guarantee, and so
they have to do something to keep growing all their I talk about this every
time, but it's important to just reiterate, like their success right now is
built in to their expectations. People expect them to put out those big games
that sell about ten to fifteen million copies and to be two hundred billion dollars
budgeted buster games. And then they also expect games and network services, PlayStation
network to be to do what it's doing and slowly grow as well. That
stuff is factored into the stock price of Sony. And so when you are
a company and you have to grow and you have to make returns for your
investors, you have to have something next. You have to have something new,
and you've got to take big swings. And for a while there,
I think a lot of publishers believed, and maybe we rightly so for a
couple of a couple of years, especially during the pandemic, that live service
was going to be the answer. And now we see it's like, man,
everyone's mostly sort of retreating back to the games they know and they're going
to stick to those, like and it's very much like sports as a hobby,
right, Like, yeah, pickleball is a new hot thing, right,
that's like the first new like sport that people are putting a lot of
money into in a very long time. It's like there is no competitor to
golf. People just go to golf. You're not gonna be able to make
a new golf not not really. And so it's like in these live service
games are very similar to the way that we treat those hobbies. So it's
just it's a tough, tough not to crack. And I think that's why,
like someone say, Okay, we got to rethink about this once again.
At least they are reconsidering some of it, and they're willing to make
some delays. We'll talk about Warner Brothers here after the break. We're gonna
take a small little sex section right here to go. Here's some messages from
our sponsors. We'll get back to it right after this and we're back.
Warner Brothers doubles down on live service games again. This is from George Yang
at GameSpot. Warner Brothers reaffirmed its stance on to double down on live service
games as part of a recent investors briefing. This is despite the fact that
it owns Hogwarts Legacy and is the number one best selling game of twenty twenty
three so far, a game that is just not in any way a live
service game, and Warner Brothers Q three earnieds calls. CEO David Saslov explained,
our focus is on transforming our biggest franchises from largely console and PC based
with three four year release. The schedules to include more always on gameplay through
live services, multi platform and free to play extensions, with the goal to
have more players spending more time on more platforms. David, it's nice to
want things. It sure is. His mouth is talking, but all the
noise is coming out of his backside exactly. It's god lot of it.
What do you now see? I say this right, I say this,
but a little hypocrisy here. One of my favorite live service games of the
last couple of years was Multi Versus. I loved that. I have been
looking for the something to fill the void of Smash Brothers ever since Ultimate stop
releasing characters. I was having a blast with it until they decided to take
it in house and re release it sometime next year. If that happened,
I mean that was like a de facto cancelation. In some ways. I
mean, I know that's going to come back out, but like that was
an emission that their live service strategy for that game was not working, and
that was like one of those early indicators. It was an early a sign
that there was something wrong in the state of Denmark with live service games.
It was like, oh, that game's just gonna go away for a while,
what's going on there? And then we heard all this live service game
is closing down and there was like five or six or seven back to back
with that all happening at the same time. So it's like, I think
liking these games like, yeah, the hypocrisy, no way you're allowed to
like these games. It's just there when people decide like how to fund these
games, it's just are you looking at what has happened to them recently?
And it feels like David Zasloft has no idea what he's talking about here,
right he wants he's just telling his investors what they want to hear to.
You know, it's it's in infinite growth, increase profits, all the things
that typically don't work, and then you're laying off half the industry. I
would I would love to know if he's brave enough to say how many projects
they have in the pipeline, like Sony is his money to his mouth is
probably because if he can't, if he can't give you a hard number,
then again talking out his backside, As the copy mentions here, Suicide Squad
God was lamb bastard for its live service stuff, yep, and they're taking
all that out. In Mortal Kombat one has some live service you know,
currency in game currency stuff in there as well, which is hit or miss.
I haven't really spent a whole lot of time with it. I haven't
had the live service part. I haven't had to. But I just I
need more specifics and I don't trust Zazi here to give me those. So
I think he just wants to sound cool and then go back into his board
and say, all right, what did I just say? What just happened
there? Or some studios that that WB runs are now scratching their heads like,
oh really, so this game we've been working on and are about to
announce next year, let's say, is that not happening because you want to
do live service? Just the top of Warner Brothers Discovery ever since he took
office, has been an absolute Nightmare two. Not only for the people that
work for him, but for the people that have to parse what the hell
he's saying every time they do these calls. And I just remember, let's
not forget, this is the guy who told us that Mortal Kombat one was
coming before well what four or five months before they had decided to announce it.
Yep, just absolute what a dumbius. It's exactly the perfect word for
him, dumbass. That's why we have that word. Yeah, I mean
Mortal Kombat one and Hogwarts Legacy. There are those the two Warner Brothers,
two big games this year. They had some other stuff, right, I
think, but those are the two that come to mind. And Mortal Kombat
definitely has a lot of live service elements, but I mean that game is
also just a straight up like sales juggernaut on its own, and that does
feel a little bit disconnected from whether or not anyone plays at live service or
not. To a certain extent, people are like, we show up for
Mortal Kombat, we like the story campaign, and then we play. I
play with my friends. Obviously, having costumes and stuff in there to buy
makes that game a ton more money. I'm not saying, don't do that
stuff, go to town, do what you gotta do, but more it
seemed feels like Hogwarts Legacy Mortal Kombat one would have sold just fine regardless of
live service implementation. He does go on says, ultimately, we want to
drive engagement and monetization of longer cide goals, and at higher levels we have
put specific capability, or we have put specific capabilities. We are currently under
scale, and we see significant opportunity to generate greater post purchase revenue. And
yeah, this is the song and dance we were hearing from EA and Take
two five, six, seven years ago and consistently the Take two's consumer recurrence
spending, I think is how they would always refer to it. And it's
like, yeah, I mean people like to buy more stuff in the games
they really like. Of course, how are you just coming to this now?
And frankly, you should be pointing out that, hey, if we
put more money more games out like Hogwarts Legacy, we could probably find a
lot more ways to grow, but they're not talking that way. It's like,
man, how is this lesson not being learned that having a big property
and delivering a decent game for those fans can actually be a key to success.
It's saying, you guys own a lot of properties, So how is
that not like the thing you're trying to replicate? And it just it's because
I think still internally they see the numbers in the way that the math works
with. Here's a game that costs about as much as any of these other
games, but they have it has an endless ceiling. Shouldn't we have more
of those? And David Zasloff just goes yes, But it's like, it's
just not that simple, right, No, it's not. And I wonder
again, consider your source. I wonder if he considers something like a combat
pass in Mortal Kombat one Live Service, it's it's an expansion, it's a
DLC expansion. It ends at a certain point. But I wonder if they
if he just thinks they're just gonna keep making combat passes and keep adding characters
at infinitium or however you say that Latin word ad infinitum. I said that
once and Dan, Mike Manatti and Jam rawl like you're saying that wrong,
and they jumped on me, and then I was like, ah, gotcha,
asses, no bomb cast for me over Then they're gonna scream, no,
you actually have to pronounce where it's wrong to be on the BombCast.
That's how it works. That's how it works. But yeah, I wonder
if he just thinks I'm just gonna keep and keep finding new partnerships for guest
characters. Barney the Dinosaur are coming to Mortal Kombat one. You did not
hear that here first. But but yeah, I again, my problem with
this is considering the source. I don't trust this guy as far as I
can throw them, So, like what he in the next call, he
could say, now live service sucks were doing single vast single player Hogwarts legacy
style games, then we'll all just scratch our heads it. I can't put
any stock into what he's saying until they start announcing actual titles. Yeah,
I think just the final thing here. I mean we talked about opportunity costs
over at PlayStation. I mean I think that's it feels like what's happened here
at WB with rock Steady, where they've just been working on Suicide Squad for
so long, trying to get it right, and that felt like a game
Like I know that the reporting was rock Steady decided to do this themselves,
but that doesn't come from nowhere. They exist, They don't exist in a
vacuum. They make these decision because they're looking at what's happening elsewhere in the
market and what's going to continue get in getting them support from their owners.
And so they decide, Hey, we're going to make Suicide Squad into a
live service game. And now that's just been such a hot mess. And
you kind of like, it's so easy to say endless money. Isn't that
what we want? It's like you got to look at the ramifications and what
it can do to a really great studio and how it could cause them headaches,
especially if they haven't done it before. So would you say it's a
hot game mess. It's a hot, hot game mess. Welcome to the
show, everybody. Let's keep going here. Take two losses Deep into five
hundred and forty three point six million dollars in its latest quarter. This from
James Batcher at Games Industry job is And I know, like a bunch of
numbers always like throw people off, just losses. They're big, and we
just got GTA six announced. I think let's just put the piece, let's
put the pieces together here a little bit take two as it released its financial
results for the second quarter, which show net losses deepening to about a half
billion dollars for the three and that for the three months ended September thirtieth,
twenty twenty three, the company saw a one hundred eleven point five percent difference
between this loss and a two hundred and fifty seven million dollar loss recorded in
the same quarter last year. So it's like the losses are trending down downward,
like the using more money. Net revenue and net bookings both saw a
slight dip, but the publisher said both were in line with previous previous guidance.
And there's a bunch of more stuff here, but let's just bounce off
there for a second. They're spending a lot of money and they don't have
a lot of stuff creating money right now. It's like, boy, what
could they be spending a lot of money on? And then and so that's
why you know, the day before this they say, hey, GTS at
GTA six is in the works, and previously Strauss's on that, I said,
we let Rockstar make their own decisions about when they're going to announce things.
Things seem like they've changed a lot of key people at Rockstar have left.
Dan Hauser isn't there anymore, Leslie and Benzay's isn't there anymore. So
you know, Sam Hauser still is there, but it feels like maybe like
Sam Houser might be more willing to play ball and be like, I'm gonna
come out. Sure, I'll say that if it's going to help keep the
stock price where it's at. I have a lot of stock intake too,
I would not like that to go down. So yeah, he comes out
and says GT six is coming, don't worry about it, And the stock
price went up, and it seems like it's mostly weathering this although I haven't
looked since we started the show and since I start started putting the show together
this morning. Uh yeah, Hey, spend a lot of money to make
a lot of money, right GTA six. I mean, it's there's nothing
guaranteed in the world except for maybe GTA six being a big hit, right,
a big launch title for sure. We were just talking about Spider Man's
launch numbers being five million. I could see GTA you know, tripling that.
Oh yeah, I mean, especially since it's going to be everywhere,
maybe won't be a right away. But it'll be on multiple consoles, yes,
yeah, yeah, it will be absolutely it'll be the kind of game
like in the old day's midnight release lines around the stores, you know,
servers crashing because people are trying to download the game right at launch. I
fully expect that to be an absolute sales drugger nap. But just because they're
showing the first trailer next month does not necessarily mean it's twenty twenty four.
True, so we also need to figure out when this game is actually coming
out. I would not be surprised if some of that stock optimism takes a
little tiny hit if the window says twenty twenty five. Yes, right,
yeah. Just because like first trailer, you expect, oh, it's coming
out next year, that's not necessarily the case. So I want to I
want to, you know, pump the brakes on that. Granted, I
don't really want to talk about the leak that happened, but that footage did
not look terribly bad for being where it was in production, So maybe it's
further along that I'm giving it credit for. But again, I don't think
you can really put a Then again, they probably know something we don't,
right They know already what the launch window is, and they may have told
they and they've spoken previously about how they expect their next financial year. So
right now we're in their current twenty fiscal year twenty twenty four, which will
end by March twenty twenty four. Then fiscal year twenty twenty five will start
and run through March of twenty twenty five, and so they've said that fiscal
year twenty twenty five is going to be massive for them, and their biggest
year ever, and people are like, well, how is that going to
be possible if not for GTA six. So we're putting pieces together still,
but that could be early twenty twenty five, to be fair, that could
be in that first three month period of twenty twenty five. So you're right
that there's still reasons to be skeptical if it falls into April, which I
believe is when GTA four launched April of two thousand and eight. I worked
at GameStop then, so it's like, you know, see what in my
brain, I think it was around April or May that that one came out,
But five came out in September of twenty thirteen, so there's no real
precedent to go on with the other games. If you want to include Red
Dead Redemption two, that was October of that year, So maybe fall is
their sweet spot. And they've had six years between Red Dead Redemption and GTA
six, assuming it comes out in twenty twenty four, to get that done.
Yeah, I mean, it definitely seems like they're gearing up for a
year long GTA marketing blitz, and none of these losses are going to mean
a damn thing when that comes out, So we will see what they have
plan. I'm looking forward to it though. It's gonna even if I don't
get into the game immediately, just watching the launch, should people reacting to
it, It's going to be a blast. Games of this streep Is did
talk to Strauszelonick a little bit about like, hey, the future of GTA
on all that stuff, and said, hey, are you worried about competition
since it's been ten years since you lost the last GTA. Strauszelnik said,
We're always concerned. We never take success for granted, and all titles degrade
at some point. There is a decay curve. But what Rockstar has done
to fight that curve and in fact to create ongoing growth has been nothing short
of extraordinary, and I think it reflects the near perfection of these properties.
Zonic also talked up solid results from other titles such as NBA two K,
which sold over four point five million units, and netlookings for this this title
are expected to be up year over year despite market challenges. He also cited
good performance from catalog titles such as Borderlands, BioShock, Civilization. Prior to
this, you mentioned that GTA five, GT Online, and Red Did It
Redemption two all did better than expected as well, you know, in their
various year like red Redemption two is act getting pretty old at this point.
In GTA five, of course ten years old, so I mean losing money,
yeah, sure, but this is I think this is for with them
having the expectation that next year is going to be a you know, a
couple of billion dollars in revenue and then probably a very solid amount of that
going to be profit, and then that will last for years as long as
GT Online two or whatever launches in a somewhat solid state and can carry that
momentum forward. And just as a side thing to Zinga, I for completely
forgot they owned Zinga. Take two did that Star Wars Hunters was that there
we go, yes twenty four, so that one could provide a bit of
a boon too. Star Wars property always a big one. I expect they're
expecting big things, so that might play into their optimism as well. Assuming
that that live service game yep does well yep, And that one's that's a
that's a shooter from Zinga that's launching on mobile and switched. Who knows that
ends up changing because by next year the switch reality could be very different.
But I don't launch it on Switch. I just wouldn't be like it's on
Switch. Why not launch it on other consoles? I guess we'll see,
all right. Valve is reportedly working on a Steam update that lets you hide
your sex games. Said anything about sex games, I want to hide other
things. Maybe this from Jess Howard at GameSpot Debian's rejoice. After twenty years
of limited privacy settings, Valve appears to be rolling out a new future that
will allows Steam users to hide what games they play. Steam dB creator powl
June dick A noted Steam Data Minor was the first to discover the reported update,
and took to Twitter to share a photo of what the process of hiding
a game looks like According to June Dick's post, once a user marks a
game as private, it will be hidden from their friends, thus permitting them
to play Koi Katsu Party to their arts content and far away from the prying
eyes of their friends. Hey listen, I say, where your dirty,
filthy games. Loud and proud, don't be empowered, show off what you
got going on for you. The worst thing the Internet Internet ever did was
a lot anonymity. Goddamnita. Also, I have to laugh at the guy
who created this this mod. His theme just happens to have Dick in it.
Definitely did not get back to me either. Every time I said it,
I was like, well, there it is. Let me my Steam
automatically created a category for me because it does that help you like sort of
games, and it's called adult games. Uh. And let's see if I
got some real highlights in there. I have a way of the press account,
so I just kind of sometimes I fix some stuff dark. Here we
go. Yeah, there is that that butts VR game. That's an adult
via VR game. But so is foot Massage the game. Let's see what
else is in here. I do have that Kuikatsu party. I've never played
Scarlet Maiden. That's what I talked about before, where it's like a Castlevania
game where you run around as a pixelated lady who bounces I guess I'll say,
uh. And that game has like plants with dicks and stuff. It's
it's wild. Wow. Yeah, there's a super naughty made too. I've
never played the original, so I haven't tried this one yet. I don't
want to miss out on the war. Jason, you're missing out and you
need the deep Deep Lure exactly. Yes, welcome to paradise there. So
yeah, listen, I'm not hiding any of these I'm not afraid of y'all.
You guys can't judge me. Oh boy, you even got chat has
is lightened up with some uh some suggestions here made all right? When's the
Koi Katsu stream illusion makes a lot of bangers. Uh, They're they're really
helping you out here. Don't listen, you, I don't. I don't
play those games, of course, I'm a sophisticated monster. Uh no,
I I just PC gaming was never my thing and you can't get those things
on consoles, so I've never dabbled. I don't know. I'm I am
of the belief that if you if you're going to play these games and like
talk about them with your friends or you know, review them on some website,
if that's even possible, just you know, we're on your sleeve now.
If this, if this Steam update hides everything, like or is it
it's made obviously or the way it works is like you can right click on
individual games. I think you could already hide all your library. You can
already make that. I think there is an option to do that, but
I think this enables you to not have to do that. To hide an
individual game, you just click on it, go to its properties, and
there's a toggle to say hide this, hide this shame, and keep it
in my deep secret tomb where no one else can see it. Now see
if you want to put a a g rated silver lining on this. Reviewers
could use that, yes, for reviewing a game, any game at all.
But let's face it, the people are going to be used this to
hide their shame. Oh yeah a lot. And everyone asked if I have
genital jousting, I absolutely have general just I think I got a code for
that one. I probably did too, And I know exactly where it came
from. Shout out to Steph. But uh yeah, I mean fine,
if people want to be a little more subtle about their sexy times, they
go right for it. Thank you, mister Dick. We appreciate it.
Yeah, shout out to June Dick. All right, let's keep going here.
The Starfield DLSS update goes live in Steam Beta. This is from Cameron
Woolsey at Destructoid At long Last, Starfield has DLSS so long as you opt
into the Steam beta for the update, which is live today but is allowing
Starfield's most interested and impatient players to get a taste of things to come.
With this beta. It brings in videos DLSS technology along with a few choice
fixes and changes, and yes, that includes the ability to eat those iconic
Starfield sandwich is right off the floor like a filthy spacer. DLSS is something
that people have been asking for for a long time. There has been fan
mods that have enabled it that work pretty well. I've had some crashes because
of that specifically, but it works pretty well now Now Bethesa themselves are integrating
it and it seems like it'll come everywhere eventually. But right now, you
just have to go to the Steam settings, go to properties and go to
the betas tab and opt in from the drop down menu there to play the
bata A branch and you get DSS and you get see There was another update
notable improvements in the beta. A major one includes a gameplay change that adjusts
the stealth to be more forgiving, which is definitely something I noticed, Like,
well, stealth just doesn't work in this game, not really, so
that's that's pretty useful as well. I I have the Windows version of this.
I'm not gonna like go back and replay the game just to get DLSS.
And I'm not necessarily waiting for this anyhow, because I was I've been
playing mostly Starfield on my Roger ally so and that's not gonna support DSS anyhow.
But hey, this is nice, a cool feature for people who have
Nvidia GPUs, something that you would ever check out. Jason, No,
I'm playing on console, like, I'm very fledgling PC. Hence why I
don't have any sex games in my Steam account. Oh yeah, I gotta
gotta catch out, gotta catch up. But but I I love that they're
doing this for the people, like this seems like such a like a niche
thing. I know there are plenty of PC gamers out there who want,
you know, Top of the Line fixed look like you could just jump into
your screen and be part of the game, and this is good for them.
I personally am not going to get anything out of it. It's like
that this is too long to read, but congratulations, are sorry that happened.
Good for you guys, but it's it's not something I'm going to use.
Have you seen what Alan Lake looks like on like the top of the
Top of the Line PC, Because that's that's the one thing right now where
it's like, okay, I do want to be playing that on the big
boy PC with all the bells and whistles because they have global illumination and that
lighting just looks so fantastic that it's there is a marked and measurable difference between
seeing that on a PS five or Xbox Series X versus seeing it on like
a forty ninety And so have you checked that out? Have you seen it?
Have you been jealous at all? Jealous? Yes? But I have
I been able to do it? No. I played on PS five as
well, and I barely saw most of that game, not through one of
the France. Yes, so any any interesting technology with the landing is not
going to matter because I'm not looking at that. I'm too busy screaming coming
after me. But no, again, cool, I would love to try
that. I would love to you know, forty ninety that with that giant
monitor from Samsung that just wraps around your entire yeah, your entire desk.
That would be wonderful. But it's just like I have a twenty seventy in
my rig. That's that's the best I can do. So good good for
you PC folks. That's just not mine, not my thing. The reality
is, though, we're talking about one game and maybe like the Cyberpunk Phantom
Liberty, so like two games that really take advantage of this stuff, and
you know those are that's at a certain point, that's an edge case,
right, It's just the people who have to have the best for everything.
And hey, I'm glad that for the people who feel the need to have
the best of everything, they are seeing a difference because it's expensive. But
mostly it's like, ye, you're going to get the experience on console just
fine, especially these consoles pretty beefy still, all right, Finally, Raid
Anniversary Edition confirmed for April release. This comes from Jason Finelli at game Spot
Can't trust this guy. Fifteen years ago, the indie platform or Braid,
first launched. It became one of the most critically acclaimed games of its generation.
THEKLA Inc. Is hoping lightning could strike twice, as the company has
announced that Braid Anniversary Edition and updated version of the indie Darling is coming on
April thirtieth. Braid follows the adventure of a young hero who is trying to
say to Kennet Princess, but all is not as it seems. I was
thinking about this game on my walk this morning, Jason, I was like,
literally just cond I'm like, what never happened that Braid Anniversary Edition this
game. The game's main mechanic was the ability to manipulate time while traveling through
its world, as it let players rewind with every mistake and attempt an attempt
an obstacle in a different way. Updates coming in the Braid Anniversary Edition include
the following improved sound effects, newly recorded soundtrack mixes, updated graphics repainted by
hand by original artists original artist David Hellman, extra frames of animation which enables
smoother endgame motions, the ability to switch switch which the updated and the original
versions at will as well. Hey, this is pretty cool. Braid is
a game where I've tried it a couple of times and I never it never
really drive with me. I eventually like fell in love with the Witness and
I'm like, oh, I should go back to the Braid to Braid and
try it out. So I'm gonna do that with this right here. Is
this a favorite of yours? Yes? This was one of the first like
major indie titles to come out when I started my writing career back in October
of two thousand and eight, so it just it had already come out if
I remember correctly, and it was still pretty big, so I checked it
out. I wasn't really big into the indie games at that time, but
I figured this would be a good one to start with. And yeah,
when it when it turns, when it hits you with that twist, I
don't know if're familiar with it, so I'm not going to I do know
the twist. That's what I was thinking about this morning, was Yeah,
yeah, it really is a I think that's it's the kind of moment that
can transcend the amount of time it's beens as it's come out, like a
whole new generation of young players are going to check this out, like whoa,
that is super cool. Now if they could build on it a little
bit more, I feel like, yeah, that was great, but didn't
go anywhere with it after the fact. So if they decide to add some
maybe extra content towards the end to maybe further flesh out what the heck was
actually going on there, I would appreciate that. But no, I think
this I think this game could would definitely find a nice little niche in twenty
twenty four, especially with the I'm going to play it again just for the
improved graphics, and the soundtrack is fantastic. I still have a couple of
songs for this soundtrack in my like in a couple of playlists, like for
relaxing or chilling out, because it's just very, very good. I do
wonder, though, how the newly recorded soundtrack mixes will be, because we
were talking about Mario RPG earlier and so far I've heard a couple of remix
tracks and I'm not yeah, I mean, you know, and nostalgia is
hard to get over there, right, I mean, the original artists overseeing
that those remixes for Super Mario RPG. That's I mean, okay, at
least they have that going for him once it's in context. I won't be
able to judge it until it's in context, right, You've got to be
playing the game to know how you feel about. At least that's how it's
been for me with these kinds of things. So Super MARIRPG, I'm like,
let's wait and see for And you know in that game you can switch
back and forth between the old music and the new music at well as well,
so fantastic. So I know what you mean here where it's like,
well, well to just play the game to know whether or not these remixed
soundtracks are going to be But you know, the music technology and games has
has improved to a certain extent, they probably might want to do like maybe
surround or something like that, and that's all they're going to do. We'll
see that's true. And there's one other element I want to highlight here.
It's coming out April thirty. It's coming on Xbox both Xbox one and Series
X, PlayStation four and five, PC, and mobile devices, but only
through the Netflix app. And I feel like this is something that people don't
even know they do. And now that Crunchy Role has gotten into it too.
With these games that will only come to mobile but through our platforms,
this is something I think is going to expand in the next couple of years.
These are games that would not have been on mobile right but because these
these companies have stepped up and said we want you to do it and will
help you do it however we can. It's coming to iOS and Android,
but you have to download it through the Netflix app and it won't be it
won't be sold separately. That's what happens with these Netflix ones is it's only
through Netflix. It's not like, oh, I could get it through Netflix
or go to the store and get it. It's like, no, they're
exclusive to Netflix. No, no, no. On mobile, this is
still coming out everything else, but on mobile it's exclusive to Netflix. Yeah,
and you have to go through the Netflix Mobile app to get them.
And the Crunchy Role will work the same way the announced earlier this week.
It's it's just a fascinating new way to play the game. I may even
try it on the iOS app or on the on the iPad through the Netflix
app, just to see how it works im mobile. Yeah, I played
a bit of Into the Breach through Netflix, which is still exclusive to Netflix
on mobile, and boy played way more of that game than I intended too,
because it's a great game and it works and it is that game.
But but yeah, I mean, I know that in the Netflix game and
stuff has not taken off, at least that's been what they said in the
most recent earnings report. I believe it's like it's not really making much of
a difference when we're or the other. But it does feel like they are
slowly kind of all these things feel like them dipping their toe in of like
trying to figure out how gaming can work with their current subscriptive subscriber base and
whether or not they should try to do things bigger. I think it was
very smarter them not to go Google Stadia and just feel like we are We're
the next player in games, We're the next console. Fuck your console.
You don't need that. All you need is Netflix. They're just like,
do you want some games? I guess it's okay, No, that's cool,
that's fine. If they can land a couple more heavy indie names exclusively
through their app for mobile devices. I feel like they may be able to
find their footing, but they've offered some great ones, Don't get me wrong.
Kentucky zero great game only through the Netflix, Apple on mobile. But
they're not They're not there yet. They need a couple more big titles,
I would say before they're there. Excellent. All right, We have a
pull question from yesterday. Let's go ahead and bring that up. Grand theft
aut of six is real? And then twenty six percent said look at us,
forty eight percent said who would have thought, and twenty six percent said
not me. And then we had another poll granted six main character is it
going to be Jimmy Bowley? Sixteen percent said Jimmy Bowley, thirteen percent said
Roman Bellick, and seventy two percent said Daniel Radcliffe. Who if you don't
know, Jason played I believe Dan Hauser in the made for BBC television movie
about the story of Rockstar, where Bill Paxton played Jack Thompson. That's oh,
incredible, incredible stuff. Yes, all right, we have a we
have a new poll question that we will talk about on Monday, because we're
off on Friday. It's a veteran's day work said, don't come in.
I'm not gonna make anyone else work. So I'm taking it off to see
you on Monday for that. But before we talk about what that pole question
is, Jason Finelli, where can people find you? What you have going
on? All that good stuff? Yeah, so big Man Finelli is my
ex It's actually any social media really if you want to look for me,
that's where I am. I have a couple things in the pipeline. Like
I said, I'm reviewing Sweaterman too for Memo RPG. Also on MMRPG,
I got to preview exclusively reveal a preview card for Disney lore Khana if you're
a TCG fan, their second set comes out in two weeks or in a
week excuse me, and they gave me a card to preview there. Also
in my podcast Cheese, Steaks and Controllers, next episode out tomorrow, I
spoke with Black Tabby Games about Slay the Princess Indie Darling that came out just
before Halloween and is really impressing people. Yeah. I just started really hearing
about that game in a lot of different places now and I was gonna check
it out. Yeah, very cool interview with them. I'm also going to
talk about the Zelda movie. I'm not going to worry about casting because we
all know Link should be played by Billy Crystal. I'm gonna instead talk about
the story and other things of that nature. I personally think that you get
around the whole Link shouldn't talk in this movie by not having them in the
movie at all. Yeah, and I'll explain how that works make them a
force of nature. Okay, I'm definitely gonna listen. I want to hear
your take on it, that's right. And then I've tweeted it a couple
of times so you can spoil yourself if you really want to. And then
I'm going to try and predict the Game Awards nominees because they came out on
Monday. That's that's a Game of the Year is gonna be loaded, and
I have no idea what that's going to look like, how many games it's
going to be, So we'll talk about that as well. And one final
shout out. I don't know if I actually see this, but I want
