<v Speaker 4>Know YOWI sightings both happened on the Gold Coast in Australia.
<v Speaker 4>I'm mel and this happened quite a while ago in
<v Speaker 4>the early two thousands. So I was driving along the
<v Speaker 4>road with my then partner and he was drinking. So
<v Speaker 4>I was driving, and we were driving an old LJ Tarana,
<v Speaker 4>so didn't have air conditioning and all heating, like we're
<v Speaker 4>really good heating in it, but being on the Gold Coast,
<v Speaker 4>we didn't really need heating, so we were driving out
<v Speaker 4>to a friend's house who lived in the back of
<v Speaker 4>nomen Vah Valley.
<v Speaker 2>And it was a long stretch road.
<v Speaker 4>It was just curved and it's a really long road,
<v Speaker 4>but there's no street lights. There's not a lot of
<v Speaker 4>houses out that way that time, and so we were
<v Speaker 4>just driving along and we thought maybe we've been We've
<v Speaker 4>been driving for ages and we still haven't hit it
<v Speaker 4>the town of Nummber.
<v Speaker 2>So we thought, well, we'll pull over on the side
<v Speaker 2>of the road.
<v Speaker 4>So back then we only had the phone book as
<v Speaker 4>a directory and a Nokia phone. So we pulled over
<v Speaker 4>and we had to look through the directory. So we
<v Speaker 4>turned on the interior lights and all the rest of it.
<v Speaker 4>And then I said, oh, maybe just give him a call,
<v Speaker 4>and he said, yeah, that might be an idea, but
<v Speaker 4>it would just check out the maps first. So we
<v Speaker 4>weren't tried to check out the maps, and we thought
<v Speaker 4>tried to approximate where we were, but weren't really sure.
<v Speaker 4>And then just this weird feeling just overcame me.
<v Speaker 2>I don't know where it came from.
<v Speaker 4>I thought, oh, this is this is so weird, but
<v Speaker 4>I feel watched and he's going, oh, what are you
<v Speaker 4>talking about I said, I just I feel weird. I
<v Speaker 4>don't feel right, and he said, oh well, I said, oh,
<v Speaker 4>can you just give him a call. We'll turn off
<v Speaker 4>the interior lights, keep driving, and you can.
<v Speaker 2>Just give them a call. So we started up the car.
<v Speaker 4>I started the car and we took off again, and
<v Speaker 4>then he turned off the lights and we got a
<v Speaker 4>little bit ways down the road and then he said,
<v Speaker 4>you know, he called them and he said no, no,
<v Speaker 4>They said we're on the right road. So we just
<v Speaker 4>got to keep going. So I thought, oh, yeah, no rays.
<v Speaker 4>And then all of a sudden, the smell overcame us.
<v Speaker 4>Like it was a weird smell. It was just really
<v Speaker 4>it's just stench. It was horrible. So we're trying to
<v Speaker 4>close your hair bents. And then I said to him,
<v Speaker 4>when're they going to put a sewage septic like plate
<v Speaker 4>plant out here somewhere? And he said, yeah, they were,
<v Speaker 4>And I said, oh, maybe they did. Like that was quick,
<v Speaker 4>but you know, I thought, no, all right, So we
<v Speaker 4>got over the smellt we just kept driving and didn't
<v Speaker 4>really say much of it, because you know, why would
<v Speaker 4>you no point commenting on it.
<v Speaker 2>And then we got further in and I'd just like
<v Speaker 2>to go back to that feeling. This place that I was,
<v Speaker 2>that we were in was not far from when I
<v Speaker 2>grew up, and I grew up there.
<v Speaker 4>I've been in the bush by myself, I've been in
<v Speaker 4>there with friends. I have never ever felt threatened in
<v Speaker 4>that environment. I can tell you I've seen we had
<v Speaker 4>what copperheads, we had, tiger snakes, brown snakes, red belly blacks.
<v Speaker 2>Thing worried us at all.
<v Speaker 4>You couldn't really rattle either him or I because we
<v Speaker 4>grew up there and there was just we knew possums
<v Speaker 4>sounded weird, but night Bert, we'd never been threatened, ever
<v Speaker 4>been in that environment.
<v Speaker 2>So that's what sort.
<v Speaker 4>Of overstruck me is, Oh, this feeling is just so
<v Speaker 4>creepy and weird. Anyway, So we're traveling down the road
<v Speaker 4>further and all of a sudden, there was this snake
<v Speaker 4>in the middle of the road.
<v Speaker 2>And I thought, hey, you look at this. And I
<v Speaker 2>was put on the high beams and we saw this
<v Speaker 2>snake and it was coiled at the base.
<v Speaker 4>It looked like a red belly black. So they're pretty
<v Speaker 4>savage snakes. They're not ones to muck around with. And
<v Speaker 4>as far as them getting intimidated doesn't really make any
<v Speaker 4>sense either. So this was like coiled at the base
<v Speaker 4>and it had its head raised off the ground, like
<v Speaker 4>about a foot off the ground might have been. And
<v Speaker 4>I said, have you ever seen a snake do that before?
<v Speaker 4>And he said, nah, nor like that, And it looked
<v Speaker 4>like a cobra, Like I thought, cobra's with the only.
<v Speaker 2>Snakes on Earth that did that anyway, So I said, well,
<v Speaker 2>what do I do? Like it's in the middle of.
<v Speaker 4>My lane, and we were always taught on those roads
<v Speaker 4>don't swerve because if you hit some loose rocks, you'll
<v Speaker 4>go straight off the road, So do not swerve was
<v Speaker 4>going through my head. So I was like, okay, well
<v Speaker 4>I'm not swerving for him. I'm just going to hit
<v Speaker 4>him straight on. So we both heard the thunk of
<v Speaker 4>its head hitting the number, and then I sort of
<v Speaker 4>sped up again, and then we both I think I
<v Speaker 4>saw it first. It was laying there was something on
<v Speaker 4>the side of the road that didn't look right for
<v Speaker 4>the environment at all.
<v Speaker 2>So I said gray like I said his name, and
<v Speaker 2>I said what is that?
<v Speaker 4>And only I had a little bit more color to
<v Speaker 4>what I said, and he just went I don't know,
<v Speaker 4>and it was an off the tree manual LG Turuna LJ,
<v Speaker 4>and so I pushed it down into second to go
<v Speaker 4>past it because first is like there's a big jump
<v Speaker 4>between first and second, and I didn't want to put
<v Speaker 4>it in first because that would have left me like
<v Speaker 4>twenty k's max. And I was not slowing down that much.
<v Speaker 4>For whatever I was looking at, I knew this isn't right.
<v Speaker 4>I don't feel good, but curious. So we slowed down
<v Speaker 4>a small amount and you could just see on the
<v Speaker 4>side of the road a head tucked in.
<v Speaker 2>Shoulders, a big back.
<v Speaker 4>And it dipped like as in you know how when
<v Speaker 4>you lay on your side you sort of dip on
<v Speaker 4>around your stomach area, and then it came up to.
<v Speaker 2>It came up to he was and then.
<v Speaker 4>There was a bottom. It was like a human in
<v Speaker 4>a fetal position, but it wasn't and it had really
<v Speaker 4>long hair and it was like matted together a dark brown,
<v Speaker 4>kind of a reddish tin kind of not very much.
<v Speaker 2>And it was enormous.
<v Speaker 4>It just was enormous, Like my ex was quite a
<v Speaker 4>big man, just over six foot, and this is just.
<v Speaker 2>So big.
<v Speaker 4>The shoulders were just like nothing you have ever seen
<v Speaker 4>in your life. I just couldn't believe what we were
<v Speaker 4>looking and I said, what is that we don't have?
<v Speaker 4>There's no there's no gorillas, there's no apes. You're in Australia,
<v Speaker 4>there's definitely not on the Gold Coast. There is no
<v Speaker 4>animal that that resembled that I knew in the bush.
<v Speaker 4>And trust me when I say I do know bush
<v Speaker 4>animals quite well.
<v Speaker 2>We have bush.
<v Speaker 4>Turkeys, but they don't lie down, they just run across
<v Speaker 4>the road. And no, nothing resembled that. The smell was
<v Speaker 4>just the smell was wow, but it was more like
<v Speaker 4>a septic tank smell.
<v Speaker 2>And anyway, so we kept we just kept driving.
<v Speaker 4>We didn't really talk much about what had we just
<v Speaker 4>encountered or anything. I just said, I hope we hit
<v Speaker 4>that house real soon. So we did. And then when
<v Speaker 4>I stopped the car, I had to just sit in
<v Speaker 4>the car. He got out to greet our friends. Our
<v Speaker 4>friends sort of came out because they were waiting for us,
<v Speaker 4>one because we just called them ten fifteen minutes before hand,
<v Speaker 4>and too like they could like we weren't acting normal,
<v Speaker 4>like the lights were still on. We had the engine
<v Speaker 4>off and our lights were still on and yeah, we're
<v Speaker 4>sort of like talking, and he was trying to talk
<v Speaker 4>me into getting out of the car. No, I did
<v Speaker 4>not want to get out of the car, and I
<v Speaker 4>explained to him, I don't want to get out of
<v Speaker 4>the car because what if the snake's under the car.
<v Speaker 4>I know how that sounds, but that's what I thought.
<v Speaker 4>I thought the snake might have gripped onto underneath the panels.
<v Speaker 4>I've just never seen a snake do that. They don't
<v Speaker 4>do that, not not the snakes up there. They this
<v Speaker 4>was not a carpet snake. This was smaller than that,
<v Speaker 4>and it was it was. It was just not I
<v Speaker 4>no carpet snakes really well anyway, So I finally got
<v Speaker 4>out of the car and I ran across their lawn.
<v Speaker 4>I don't think I even closed the door of the car.
<v Speaker 4>And then I sprinted across their lawn and they had
<v Speaker 4>a balcony, so that's where they were standing with the
<v Speaker 4>lights on, and I jumped over the balcony. I didn't
<v Speaker 4>even try to find the stakes, and then I said,
<v Speaker 4>look for the snake. So they went and got a flashlight.
<v Speaker 4>We asked them for a flashlight, and they took the
<v Speaker 4>flashlight out and then my then partner was looking under
<v Speaker 4>the car and his friend was looking under the car
<v Speaker 4>and they were like, there's no snake. Soon after that happened,
<v Speaker 4>another group of our friends came up the driveway and
<v Speaker 4>we were like, oh, my gosh, did you guys smell anything,
<v Speaker 4>see anything, like, was anything weird at all to you
<v Speaker 4>on the driver And they said, didn't smell anything, didn't
<v Speaker 4>see anything, didn't see the snake.
<v Speaker 2>We told them about the snake that we had.
<v Speaker 4>Hit and yeah, I gave it a good whack, and no,
<v Speaker 4>they didn't hear anything. They didn't see anything. They didn't
<v Speaker 4>see anything on the side of the road.
<v Speaker 2>Nothing. So we were like, wow. So we're still friends
<v Speaker 2>and still talk and.
<v Speaker 4>And just every now and then, and we still bring
<v Speaker 4>up that night, you know, like.
<v Speaker 2>What was it that we saw? It was so weird.
<v Speaker 4>So anyway, fast forwarding time, fast forward about ten years
<v Speaker 4>and I was living out in the bush again and
<v Speaker 4>pretty secluded little place I had at the time out there,
<v Speaker 4>and so I was at the back on the verandah.
<v Speaker 2>It was like an open veranda.
<v Speaker 4>You just stepped straight out of the house onto the
<v Speaker 4>patio in like area, and it had like the area
<v Speaker 4>but it wasn't any steps or raised or anything like that.
<v Speaker 2>It was a pretty tiny little house.
<v Speaker 4>So I was out the back having a cigarette, which
<v Speaker 4>I shouldn't have been doing anyway, I hear that. So
<v Speaker 4>I was out there, and where I was sitting was
<v Speaker 4>like on exercise equipment. So I'm sitting there and I'm
<v Speaker 4>just looking out and I can see like this light
<v Speaker 4>from the other estate which is behind us, but it
<v Speaker 4>only had like one light visible in that estate. Like,
<v Speaker 4>it's really heavy trees, lots of lantana. You can't You
<v Speaker 4>can bushwalk there easy, and there's heaves of bookshorting paths,
<v Speaker 4>but you have to stay the path. If you go
<v Speaker 4>five feet off the path, you will be lost because
<v Speaker 4>it's so thick and very very junk little type out there.
<v Speaker 4>So I was looking off through these trees at this
<v Speaker 4>little light.
<v Speaker 2>Now, earlier in the night, I could hear.
<v Speaker 4>A rave party, you know, and like people have rave
<v Speaker 4>parties out in the middle of nowhere. One, they're not
<v Speaker 4>going to upset it too many people. And two, you know,
<v Speaker 4>the police aren't going to come out there and just
<v Speaker 4>tell them to turn the stereo down. So so anyway,
<v Speaker 4>they're out there and raving away, So I really think anything.
<v Speaker 2>I'd forgotten about that by the time I went out
<v Speaker 2>the back.
<v Speaker 4>Because like the night was really still and quiet by
<v Speaker 4>that time, so that sort of thought had left me.
<v Speaker 4>And all of a sudden, so I'm looking at this
<v Speaker 4>light far off in the distance, and then the light disappears.
<v Speaker 2>It's gone, and I was thinking, where's the lego.
<v Speaker 4>It's like cocking my head and I'm having a good look,
<v Speaker 4>and I'm going, like, what did that light go? Like
<v Speaker 4>it was just maybe it went out, but that's really weird.
<v Speaker 4>Who watches a street light go out? Like I've never
<v Speaker 4>seen anyway. So I'm sort of looking and changing my
<v Speaker 4>view by angle and sort of shifting on my seat
<v Speaker 4>side decide, like, you know, putting my head round that way,
<v Speaker 4>putting my head round the other way, And all of
<v Speaker 4>a sudden, I see like a really really.
<v Speaker 2>Faint eye outline.
<v Speaker 4>And I can't tell you what I saw that night,
<v Speaker 4>I cannot, but it was just it was just in
<v Speaker 4>front of me, like it was. It was it was
<v Speaker 4>like the backyard was not a big backyard, considering the
<v Speaker 4>bush lamb in. And then I heard and it was
<v Speaker 4>like a full grunt. I know that sounds funny, but
<v Speaker 4>this was like a full grunt, and I thought, oh okay,
<v Speaker 4>And my first point of care went to my brain
<v Speaker 4>to say.
<v Speaker 2>That's a tweaker from the party.
<v Speaker 4>That's like a party person who's making these these noises.
<v Speaker 4>Maybe they've taken some form of, you know, thing that
<v Speaker 4>has sort of warped their perspective of who they are
<v Speaker 4>as a human.
<v Speaker 2>So I thought, that's so weird. Why would that occur?
<v Speaker 4>And then it did it again, and it sounded like
<v Speaker 4>it was moving towards me, like, not not fast, not
<v Speaker 4>not like it was vicious, not like it was going
<v Speaker 4>to hurt me. It just moved towards me, like a
<v Speaker 4>bit of a warning, like I'm here, You're not hearing things.
<v Speaker 4>I am definitely standing in front of you, not more
<v Speaker 4>than maybe thirty feet away from you. And I thought,
<v Speaker 4>so I just jumped up out of my seat. I
<v Speaker 4>ran inside the house. I flicked the door closed as
<v Speaker 4>fast as I could, I locked it. And then my
<v Speaker 4>partner was sitting on the couch and he turned and
<v Speaker 4>looked at me, and he goes, what is wrong with you?
<v Speaker 2>And that says a lot because he didn't really pick
<v Speaker 2>up on this kind of stuff. He was kind of
<v Speaker 2>not that good at that kind of thing anyway, So
<v Speaker 2>he noticed, like he goes, you are white. What's wrong?
<v Speaker 2>And I went, oh my god.
<v Speaker 4>I said something out of the back, like something, or
<v Speaker 4>someone is out the back. Someone's out the back, And
<v Speaker 4>he goes, what about the front door? And I was like,
<v Speaker 4>so I'm running to the front door and I'm turning
<v Speaker 4>the knob like to you know. I mean, well, I'm
<v Speaker 4>turning the because the knob had the lock on top
<v Speaker 4>of it sort of thing, so I'm trying to turn that.
<v Speaker 4>All of a sudden, the door is I'm fighting a
<v Speaker 4>force to get the door closed. And I said I
<v Speaker 4>can't get the door, and he said, why are you
<v Speaker 4>opening it? I said, no, I'm not. And he jumped
<v Speaker 4>off that couch so quick. I don't know whether he
<v Speaker 4>jumped over the back of it or went round it,
<v Speaker 4>but he was there like lightning. And we're both fighting
<v Speaker 4>with this door, right, so we're pushing on it with
<v Speaker 4>all our might.
<v Speaker 2>Now he was a.
<v Speaker 4>Big boy, so whatever was pushing against us had a
<v Speaker 4>lot of strength.
<v Speaker 2>So we got the door closed.
<v Speaker 4>I latched the door, and then I went round to
<v Speaker 4>the kitchen to retrieve my phone because that was on
<v Speaker 4>the kitchen bench at that time, and I had the
<v Speaker 4>kitchen light on, so that sort of diminishes what you
<v Speaker 4>can see outside because the light contrasts between the two
<v Speaker 4>inside outside kind of thing. But there was like a
<v Speaker 4>half inch fence right next to the kitchen window, like
<v Speaker 4>and so there was no panels in the fence, but
<v Speaker 4>it was like primed ready for a fence to go
<v Speaker 4>straight in. And I saw something and I thought at
<v Speaker 4>the time maybe the guy who the tweaker, maybe that
<v Speaker 4>was a tweaker and or somebody who's you know, pumped
<v Speaker 4>up from a party and they're pumped up from a
<v Speaker 4>party and they have Camo on with you know, like
<v Speaker 4>the grass camo with the long sort of things that
<v Speaker 4>string off the camo, and I thought, that is a
<v Speaker 4>party goer in Camo, and why what is going on?
<v Speaker 2>So I was like, I'm calling the police.
<v Speaker 4>So I called the police, and the lady on Triple
<v Speaker 4>zero said, no, we're coming up there, stay on the line,
<v Speaker 4>turn on.
<v Speaker 2>The lights on, you know where he'd assist you.
<v Speaker 4>And I'm thinking, wow, they were really taking us seriously here,
<v Speaker 4>so which I was thankful for. And so she stayed
<v Speaker 4>onto the line until they got there. Because it did
<v Speaker 4>take some time for the police to get up the
<v Speaker 4>windy road to get to us, and when they got there,
<v Speaker 4>then we of course disengaged. And then I said to
<v Speaker 4>the police officer what had happened, and they said, great,
<v Speaker 4>because we've got the dog squad.
<v Speaker 2>And I'm thinking, well, dislike full overkill, like I've I'm
<v Speaker 2>not known police officers to do this ever, So anyway,
<v Speaker 2>I was like, Okay, they're really taking this quite like
<v Speaker 2>good because we had something happened and we had somebody
<v Speaker 2>in the yard.
<v Speaker 4>I don't know what was happening still, and so the
<v Speaker 4>police dogs went out the back and then didn't see them,
<v Speaker 4>and we were just talking to the police and they
<v Speaker 4>were so good. They were like fully calming us down.
<v Speaker 4>They were assuring us that they believed that something had happened,
<v Speaker 4>and went through a bit of home security and some
<v Speaker 4>plants for the future, and I thought, wow, they've just
<v Speaker 4>been they've been so sorry here anyway, So I don't
<v Speaker 4>know what really happened in between. I can't really tell you,
<v Speaker 4>And I think I was just trying to process everything
<v Speaker 4>that was going on. And then the dog squad they
<v Speaker 4>put the dogs in the back and took them, and
<v Speaker 4>then the police officers told us what the canine unit
<v Speaker 4>had told them, and we.
<v Speaker 2>Found out that.
<v Speaker 4>Yes, there was definitely something in your yard, and that
<v Speaker 4>didn't click to me at all. And they said the
<v Speaker 4>dog squad did not find anything, no smells around the
<v Speaker 4>front of your house or anywhere near the front door,
<v Speaker 4>but they did find something out the back. It went
<v Speaker 4>through the panels like I had said, and that the
<v Speaker 4>dog followed it through the panels just outside the kitchen.
<v Speaker 4>Then it ran through a couple more yards whatever, and
<v Speaker 4>then it got to an area where the police dog
<v Speaker 4>people the canine unit had relayed to them and said,
<v Speaker 4>we couldn't get through the thick brush. We went to
<v Speaker 4>a spot, followed it all the way through the bush,
<v Speaker 4>and then we came up to this spot and the
<v Speaker 4>dog could still smell that there was something there and
<v Speaker 4>the paths that had taken. But the police officer could
<v Speaker 4>not work out like the dog couldn't even follow that
<v Speaker 4>couldn't even get through the brush or the sick lantana
<v Speaker 4>or the trees, just the bush was just impenetrable at
<v Speaker 4>that stage. It just they could not get through it.
<v Speaker 4>And he said he had to stop and turn around
<v Speaker 4>and come back. But he said, definitely something was in
<v Speaker 4>your yard. And it didn't dawn on me until later,
<v Speaker 4>and I thought, why'd they keep saying something was?
<v Speaker 2>He had?
<v Speaker 4>And then I thought, oh, my goodness, was that another encounter?
<v Speaker 4>Was that another yowie that I saw with my own
<v Speaker 4>two eyes but not quite? And then I just thought,
<v Speaker 4>oh wow, So that's two encounters that are really burnt.
<v Speaker 2>Into my brain and etched in there forever.
<v Speaker 4>More So, it was really nice to tell everyone about
