Krats, can you tell us about the really entire kind of mess that's been create aided here for the team? Walker though, four year, seventy two million bucks, really well like nice guy in the industry for a while. He's had some success in the past with the Mets, Diamondbacks, et cetera, but it really did not work out for him and Krats. What happens is in a city that is very demanding and very vocal, you will see fans tend to grasp a certain player or two as their scapegoat.

Speaker 2: I mean he was losing them a game once a week, but you got to score runs to win games. Your thoughts on how this unfolded going back for a couple of years now, where some people wanted him out, you know, a year or two ago.

Speaker 4: And he ate up a lot of really good innings. Last year for him, I think he had just above a four ERA last year, after the year before, I think he had a seven plus ERA. That's pretty much when the ire of Philly fans kind of hit Taiwan Walker. I think kind of his the look that it looks like it's nonchalant, I think right out of the gate was something that Philly fans were like, he doesn't even look like he's trying. And I'm like, pump the brakes. Go back and watched this dude when he was in Seattle pumping ninety four to ninety nine. He didn't look like he was trying very hard. His velocity went down. Like, just because you don't look like you're trying hard doesn't mean that you don't well. In a city like Philly, when that's the perception, then all of a sudden, you have a bad half a year a bad stretch, and he did. He had a bad His second year of the contract was awful and they wanted him released. Fans wanted him released before then. He ate up a lot of really good innings. I don't know how many he had last year twenty five, he made twenty one starts. He ate up one hundred and twenty three innings at a four era. Okay, that's valuable. I think this release was happening regardless of what his outcome was. Obviously, you know, if he as a two era, I think they keep him around. But I don't think Taiwan Walker is at the point in his career where he could have a two era. And I think some of it was, you know, there's just age catches up to some guys. But my opinion, when you watch him throw, feels like he's throwing through things too. It feels like he's not one hundred percent, and yet he's still going out there and taking the ball. The only time you ever heard him complain was when he didn't get the pitch when he wasn't on the roster in the twenty the run in twenty two. That's the only time. But Philly fans through an eight game road road skid here or eight game game eight game losing skid that they have. Tywan Walker ain't the problem. Let's put it that way.

Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you you you mentioned something Scott about him being the scapegoad. I don't think this has anything to do with the Phillies organization, you know, trying to point blame at someone for their res and struggles. I just think his time had come. You know, he really didn't kind of live up to the contract. He did have some decent moments with the team. He had some valuable moments as Cratsy kind of appointed it to, you know, eating up innings. But he just isn't off to a really good spot this year. And unfortunately, the game is kind of evolved. Typically a guy like this would be a guy you would move to the bullpen and kind of that long reliever role. That role doesn't really exist anymore. And unfortunately for him, the type of pitcher he is, you can't just take him out of the starting role and put him in the bullpen and his stuff plays up. He you know, the last couple of years, he's lost kind of the velocity on his fastball a little bit, so you know, he's not a heart thrower who can get away with just going out there and let it letting it rip for one inning. I think it's just his time has come. Maybe another team gives him an opportunity. But I also like what Kratsey said too. You know, he was a teammate of mine the year in New York leading up to him signing that deal in Philadelphia, and he just hasn't really looked the same. It does look like he's pitching through something. I know he kind of gets, you know, a reputation as a guy who doesn't care. As his teammate, he cares a lot. He works really hard, but when you watch him pitch, he just doesn't look physically right. And you know, maybe he gets a little bit of time off, goes back home, spend some time with his family, kind of reevaluates where he's at. Maybe a team gives him an opportunity, you know, a month from now, two months from now. You know, we saw with Lucas Giolito that you can and Patrick Corbin, you could be sitting at home and if you've got major league experience and know how to get out. You know, the phone's going to ring at some point. It's up to him if he decides to go on and play. If he doesn't, he had a really nice career.

Speaker 2: What do you think is wrong with the Phillies on offense? I mean, this is a team that you look at and say, hey, this is a pretty complete team on paper. There's some really notable names starting pitching wise, bullpen. I know Duran's out right now, but they've invested in each part of their team and it's not clicking early on in the season. I'll throw a nugget out there. For example, they're zero to nine against left handed starting pitchers this year, excluding openers. So what are your thoughts on what's happening here?

Speaker 3: You know what, who's you know, whose thoughts? I really want to get as our first guest because he's very you know, you know, in tune with with that division, you know, falling in the Yankees a ton. He loves talking, hitting, he loves talking approach. Some things just can't be explained. I mean the left handed thing. And you know I've pounded this table for teams going out and and employing you know, guys like myself who were known for hitting left handed pitching and not you know, paying them pennies on the dollar. And maybe that's an area of an improvement that they needed to have guys that hit from the right side that could platune with some of the outfields and not kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel for guys to face some of these lefties, because as we've seen in the game, you know, the arguably some of the you know, majority of the top ten pitchers in the game are left handed. So you're gonna run into some really nasty left handed pitching. But I don't know if it's just you know, and I hate saying this, because he's one of the best in the game, if you know, ever in terms of most respected hitting coaches in the game. But sometimes you keep a group together for a long time and it's the same voice and the same tweaks and the same fixes and the same you know, trying to figure things out in the batting cage, you know, the whole Phillies sort of core. It may be time to kind of shake things up there.

Speaker 2: Yeah, and you're talking about Daniel Murphy, who is going to join us in about five minutes. I mean, Kevin Long changed Murph's career. It's like the prime example there of someone who was able to make a huge impact on a player who already had some midman's skill sets and he was able to take him to the next level. I mean, we'll ask Murph about this coming up in a moment, but Kevin Long's got to be one of his guys.

Speaker 3: Yeah, And I hate even like I'm not even suggesting it. I'm just saying, sometimes you're around the same people, it's kind of the same core group of players. I don't know what it is. Some things are just explainable in this game, because when you look at that lineup on paper, you wouldn't think they would be one of the worst statistically offensive in baseball right now. And I don't know, Crassy, what do you think you're you're the local PA guy. What do you got.

Speaker 4: I mean, it's it is just if you watch them consistently. And I think that's what Philly fans are pissed about, is you watch this team consistency consistently, and it's very short at bats, it's weaker contact. Now, yesterday, I think they had better at bats against Matthew Boyd. I think they had, you know, but then you say, okay, they have better at bats against a lefty just coming off the il, but they didn't string those runs together. It's all felt. It's all well and good. If you're cutting down strikeouts, that's awesome. If it's at the expense of that's not awesome. And you have to be able to drive the ball, and they're just they are in a serious funk right now.

Speaker 4: One of our people behind the scene put together a you know, our production meeting, and one of the stats that was put in there at Mundososa was hitting one seventy four against lefties. Entering the game. He got two hits, he got a double on a single, he's hitting two forty now. It's just a prime example of one game can change some of these numbers around. One game can change you know, what guys are hitting against lefties or guys who have historically hit against lefties can change these numbers around. The issue is everybody's going through it. Schwarber hit a homer against Chota the other day, and you know, it just seemed like, yeah, bats didn't really change until the ninth inning when they got a few guys on so you sit here and you go, is it just going to be Schwarber and Harper? Is the whole team cooked at the same time. No, I don't think either of those is true. And so I think it's time to start betting high on the Phillies because I don't see them doing this the whole year. Have they dug themselves a big enough hole that they can't make the playoffs?

Speaker 2: Yeah, That's what's crazy is you look at some of the teams that have started off slow and it's not like, oh, there's only two or three guys that are doing their thing. It's like, no, there's really nobody doing their thing at a normal level. I'll just give one quick example, because I'm trying to watch more Reds games lately. It's Elie de la Cruz, It's Sal Stewart, and then it's like, and they're winning games. Why they can pitch, But they also have two guys that are starring and that's enough for now. Some others will hopefully come around for them. But that's how much of a difference it can make. I mean, you've got two guys that are doing their thing and the team looks great, and then you've got really zero or one on a team like the Phillies with the Mets, who will talk more about coming up and they can't string winds together. There it is for Sarah Langs also posting lowest era and the pictures first six starts of a season and earned runs became official in both leagues in nineteen thirteen, so he's racking all kinds of records. And then Otani here real quick after six shutdown innings for him is now at an three to eight clip one ear and run in twenty four innings. What are you seeing from both of these guys? Obviously Otani's got to do his hitting thing too, but yeah, I would love to get your thoughts on what you're seeing from both of these pitchers who look like two.

Speaker 6: Well, for me with Jose Soriano, and first of all, I made the mistake of betting.

Speaker 6: But for me, what I've seen is this fastball command is unparallel.

Speaker 6: He's able to use his fastball in all four quadrants.

Speaker 6: And when you're a pitcher and you're able to do that, God just sets up so much. It opens up so many doors for you. And another thing that's really surprised me is is he's able to get hitters in the zone and then out of the zone very quickly, and especially with this ab yes man, because I believe there's some pitchers out there with abs that tend to leak over the middle of the plate a little bit more than they should be because they're worried about nibbling. Like Ranger Suarez. I had a great conversation about Ranger sore As while I was up in Boston. He leaves a lot of balls over middle heart of the plate because he doesn't have that ninety five plus to blow it by you when the hitter and everybody else in the ballpark knows that a fastball is coming and you have to throw that fastball. And so I think with Soriano, his ability to challenge all quadrants of the zone and be able to stay on those edges without losing it to an ABS challenge has been really key for him. And then you know, he throws his off speed and he makes it come off of his fastball and the off speed is out of the zone and he's getting the last swing and miss off of that. So to me as a pitcher, that's that's what I see most of him and the reason why he's being so effective.

Speaker 3: Yeah, I watched him yesterday because I was covering the Blue Jays game, and you know, to throw out another stat going into yesterday's game, the last seventy five batters he had faced, he's given up one extra base hit. He dig up seven hits yesterday, no extra base hits. It's been a ridiculous start to him. I got a chance to play with him two years ago when he was just a young pup coming up, and you could see he had the stuff to be an absolute superstar in this game. It has taken him some time to kind of figure out and tweak his arsenal. And I think you just have to give a lot of credit to a guy like Mike Maddocks who's been in this game for ever and is known as one of the best pitching coaches in the game. Him coming over to Anaheim, and I think they talked about on the broadcast yesterday. He's utilizing his best pitch, which is his curveball the least, so he's not showing it is often. I think that was a problem early in his career, even though it was filthy, he was using his curveball a lot. So over the course of the second and third time you saw him, hitters saw that curveball a lot. He's implemented the forcing fastball at the top of the zone to change the eye level. He obviously has one of the best sinkers in the game, a high velocity sinker. But the fact he's not showing his outpitch in his curveball and his split finger, I think has really this allowed him to take his game to the next level.

This guy just night in and night out proves that he's on a different level, and they're making up new rules for him to where he doesn't count against a hitter and a pitcher in the in.

Speaker 6: So I mean, it's to me in innate ability to to be able to switch, to switch from a hitter to a position player or a d h which is to me a still position player a hitter, and be able to do this, and his uncanny ability to eke people deep, like that's what gets me is right right. Not only could he he maybe just be a hitter that hits for average or gets guys over, but the dude can take you deep. And to me, that's that's uncanny. I've never seen nothing like it before, and I never I used to doubt like this could continue, but I'm not doubting it anymore, that's for sure.

It's in some ways it's still, you know, his ability as a DH and what he does on the offensive side still kind of overshadows this, And I don't even know how that's possible. I think I think we're living in a time where we're seeing something that we've never seen before. And it's so amazing that I think we're starting to get a little number to it, because I can't even imagine. I mean, if you took this name off the top of the screen and you showed these numbers, you would be blown away. Your mouth would be wide open. You'd be like, who is this guy? This guy's the greatest picture of all time? And then you see it showy Atani and you're like, wait, isn't that the guy who also his bomb steals bases is the best offensive player in the league. Like it's hard to even put into words what he's doing this year. It's amazing that he can, you know, And I think I think him coming back from the TJ too, It's taken him a little time to get to this form, and I think he's all the way back. And I mean, are we looking at a guy who could potentially win the m v P and the cy Young in the same year.

But you know, when you consider, you gotta you know, do your treatment. You gotta work out, and you gotta get your body ready. You have these meetings and then I want to get my swings in the cage and it's bp, you know, and then I want to relax a little bit. Then I gotta ramp it back up to go play a game. Right. He has to mix in pitching and his bullpens, his arm care, all the different things that he has to do. He has to be ready as a hitter, you know. Then he has to figure out ways that throws bullpen. Then he has to go start. And then by the way, the day he starts, he's also hitting too. It's like I'm not gonna lost word. It's it's like one.

You just don't get a lot of access to him sometimes because during the season he's freaking busy, and even his teammates will be like, the most time and the fun time they get to spend with him is often during the game because then during the game, you know, if he's dhing, he's in the dugout, whatever, you get to spend more time with him. And maybe that's why, you know, he finally had an off night. He had an on base streak that was at fifty three games and it ended fifty three games, and he finally went oh for four on a day that he pitched and ken he win a cy young Yes that we talked about the innings, but you know, writers ser obsessed with wins above replacement, especially the newer ones, and right now for National League pitchers, he has the top runs what is it ri nine to war for fangrafts, which is one of the most popular ones that writers go off of. He has the tops number in the National League. Soriano is way ahead of everyone else, and there's a few other American League pitchers, but he has tops of.

That's crazy, and he might then he might yeah, very well. Yeah, yeah, I mean, hey, if he stays healthy and keeps doing this, even if he ends up with whatever, twenty five starts versus somebody who had thirty or even less than that, twenty three or four starts versus somebody who had thirty, he can win the award. Speaker 3: I had two thoughts on it. I think the foul pool ruined it or the foul pool added to it, because where with this ball would have landed if it didn't hit the foul pool. But it also adds a really cool element the fact that he hit it off the top of the foul pool. If you would have hit over it, it would have been like, Wow, it's a bomb. But then you actually really get to put into context how high that foul pole is and he hit the top of it. I mean I watched it probably five or six times night laying in bed before I flew home this morning. And it's crazy that there's athletes like this that possessed this type of power batspeed ability on the baseball field. I was very fortunate to play for a long time, and I wasn't that type of athlete so you know, that's a little feather in my cap.

Speaker 2: But dude, to me, this is the X factor right now for why the Pirates are in a good spot. I know they added some pieces in the offseason, but really, to me, I mean, O'Neil Cruz has been loosing with potential for years. He's put up some decent numbers league adjusted stats over the course of his career, but then last year was super down. I mean, he was a below league average hitter by ops plus, he was at eighty six. He was running a lot, which he's doing now. But now, I mean the first month of the season, he's two eighty six, three fifty two on base, five point fifty one slug, seven homers, ten stolen bases, and he's hitting left handed pitching really for the first time in his career. So when you add all of that up, all of a sudden, you have a player who's playing like an All Star. And when you add that to the three for other guys that they brought to the lineup, it's serious.

Speaker 3: So I love I love seeing it because I love you know, we we've been tough on the Pirates, even on this show going into free agency and they finally went out and actually made some moves. So I'm really glad that the Pirates are off to a get start. They're a team that every time they're on and I'm watching them, I'm rooting for them because I think it's good for baseball when a team has a guy like O'Neal Cruz in their lineup, they have the pitching staff led by Paul Skins. At some point, you got to put your chips in. And that doesn't mean they have to go out and sign guys for you know, one hundred million dollars, two hundred million dollars, but go out and make some effort to try to improve your team. And I think that's what they did this offseason. So I'm rooting for them. I hope they go out and they're a playoff team because how exciting would it be to have this version of O'Neal Cruise and Paul skiings in the postseason.
