00:00:00 Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patricks Show on Fox Sports Radio. 00:00:04 Speaker 2: The money on the AFC title game is changing a little bit here. The Patriots were five and a half point favorites, now down to four and a half against Fritzy's Broncos. The Rams are still getting two and a half against the Seahawks. Eight seven seven three DP show operator sitting by and that's Tyler. Good morning. If you're watching on Peacock, thank you for downloading the app. Speaking of the Broncos and the Patriots, a little trash talk back and forth coach with the Broncos, player with the Patriots. We'll have that for you coming up. Not exactly, you know, it used to be real trash talking. I don't know if anybody has a bulletin board by the way in the locker room, like that's bulletin board material. I don't know if they have one in the hallway. You walk by and you see if there's anything that's said there. But we'll have that for you coming up as well. So the AFC NFC title games up this weekend. The Ravens got their coach, replacing John Harball with Jesse Minter, who was there for a few years under John Harbaugh, and Mike McDaniel is going to be interviewing with the Buffalo Bills for what I'm told he I thought he was signing with the Chargers as they're oc but I think he's interviewing today in Buffalo. This is the former Dolphins head coach. If you're a Dolphins fan, are you nervous that you would have Mike McDaniel staying in the division coaching Josh Allen in the Buffalo Bills or are you excited that Mike McDaniel is going to be going to Buffalo maybe in coaching Josh Allen. I think it's an interesting move if it happens, because I think you got to if you're shaking things up, you're getting rid of Sean McDermott, then really shake things up. And if you bring in Mike, and I think he's a great offensive mind, he's not gonna have to work as hard with Josh Allen as he did with Tuatongue. Iiloo. But it's just an interview. Because Mike turned down an opportunity or took his name out of the running for an interview with the Browns, and we thought that he had agreed to a contractor was going to with the Chargers, which I thought, that's a great pairing with Harbaugh. Now you get the opportunity to go into Buffalo. Now, if I'm Buffalo, and I've said this before, I interview everybody because I want your input. I want Mike McDaniel from a dolphin's perspective to tell me about my team. Can't lose no harm. Tell me what you think, what did you try to do against Josh? What are we missing here? Who's somebody might be better than what we think? It'd be great if he said Keon Coleman. You know the guy I really like is Keon Goleman. So that's going to happen today. Also, this is the line for the College Football Playoff Committee to decide if they're going to go to sixteen teams or they're gonna be staying at twelve. I don't think there's going to be any ruling that they would go to twenty four from what I've been told, and I've been telling you, the Big Ten wants to go sixteen, sixteen, sixteen, and then you go to twenty four. That's what the Big Ten wants. In writing. I don't know if everybody's on board with that. I think, you know, going to sixteen is one thing, then going to twenty four in three years. That's what I've been told the Big Ten is looking for. But if they can't decide, it stays at twelve at least for this upcoming year. All right, Seaton Poll question for hour one is going to be what. 00:03:43 Speaker 3: We're gonna go with one from the towd here, how do you feel when your team quote chirps before a game? Love it hated Sean Payton doing a little chirping. You know what, let's let's let's play it here. 00:03:57 Speaker 2: Here's Sean Payton, here's your trash talk, here's your bulletin board material. 00:04:02 Speaker 4: Do you have a message for them this week with them the final game? 00:04:05 Speaker 5: Well, and they're gonna have plenty of rest after this one two weeks. 00:04:11 Speaker 2: So that means that they're going to win the game and then they get an extra a week and then they play the Super Bowl. Well, the Patriots responded, as only they can. Kayshawn Booty had this to say to Sean Payton's response, two weeks for the rest of the. 00:04:30 Speaker 6: Does that matter if you guys don't. 00:04:36 Speaker 2: Okay? What he was saying, is that they can rest up, they'll be in can kun. That's it. I don't know that. Uh, you know, it's it's not like the old days with Buddy Ryan or something, you know, Bounty gat or and this is just a hey we of course Sean Payton thinks they're going to win, and the Patriots think they're going to win. Okay, not a big deal. Yes, Ton, It's not. 00:05:04 Speaker 7: Exactly Joe Namath calling that he's going They're gonna upset the colt to Super Bowl three. 00:05:08 Speaker 6: But still, you know, for me, anyway, I'd rather, you know, not. 00:05:12 Speaker 7: Make predictions or hinted predictions in any clever way, like we're winning this game and then we're no. 00:05:17 Speaker 2: Wait, okay, is this bulletin board of material? Do you think that the Patriots and Mike Rabill go, hey, the Broncos think they're going to win stretch, Yes, they they think. Now that would be interesting if he said, boy, I don't know, maybe if we win this and then you know, we get another week off. But they're a tough opponent, I got I don't. I mean, we're desperate to get something to spice this up, I guess. But the fact that it went from five and a half to four and a half. Is kind of interesting here, and once again Vegas isn't rooting for anybody. They don't pick sides. They're trying to get the most money and dropping it down a little bit. So you got some Bronco money here, Yes, Marvin, at. 00:05:59 Speaker 8: This point the season, do you need bulletin bar material? You're trying to go to the Super Bowl? So who cares? If Sean Payton says you have two weeks to rest. 00:06:07 Speaker 2: Up, I agree. 00:06:08 Speaker 8: Shouldn't you be already fired up even before he says that this doesn't fire you up? Wow, the coach of the opposition thinks they're going to win the game and they'll get two weeks off. I hope he thinks they're going to win. By the way, Todd is apoplectic about this betting line. He just can't understand that. Now when outs four and a half, do you feel a little better about your Bronco a little bit? 00:06:36 Speaker 6: Yeah? 00:06:36 Speaker 7: Because I thought it'd be Mark three and a half. Maybe I'm all in too much on Stitty and what I've read and heard about him, but five and a half in Denver. 00:06:43 Speaker 2: You would be favored if Bo Nicks was playing. 00:06:45 Speaker 6: One and a half. Yeah that's where it was. 00:06:47 Speaker 2: Or yes, yeah, he's about fair Okay, yeah see. 00:06:50 Speaker 3: I think that's actually the problem, though, is that people are excited about what they've read and heard about Stitty because they haven't seen him play in a couple of years. That's actually the whole issue. That's the whole Hey, I've read a lot about this guy. It sounds like he's going to be pretty good. 00:07:06 Speaker 2: It's it's almost as if we're going on folklore, like man Stitty Man when he was with the Patriots and didn't play, he's really bright. When Stitty was with you know, we start talking about these sightings of him, but their practice and he's playing what five games in his career started five games, hadn't played in a couple of years. 00:07:28 Speaker 6: Yes, So as Vegas themselves buying into the hype a little bit, what made it. 00:07:32 Speaker 7: Go from five and a half to four and a half all of a sudden the great a second, Maybe five and a half's too much? 00:07:36 Speaker 2: No, that's the money. 00:07:37 Speaker 6: Yeah, No, I understand that. 00:07:38 Speaker 7: But I'm just saying in general, even just the regular better you know, taking the mafia out of it or whatever, are the people that crunch all the number. 00:07:45 Speaker 2: It's not the mafia. It's interesting. 00:07:47 Speaker 7: I didn't go from five and a half to six and a half with the question mark that has did, and we went from five and a half to four and a half. 00:07:52 Speaker 6: So all of a sudden, it's giving too many points. 00:07:54 Speaker 2: Do you understand how this works? 00:07:55 Speaker 6: Is I'm not a better a vague idea? 00:07:57 Speaker 2: Yes, I don't even think you have a vague idea. Uh, it's money now the money is coming in on Denver. So now they moved to four and a half. 00:08:09 Speaker 7: But the over under is totally determined by Vegas number crunters. 00:08:13 Speaker 2: Right, Yes, the opening line, but that can change as well. That with the money the over under, how many times is it supposed to change? You're gonna be okay, like you were a mess this morning. Before we started the show, I thought there. 00:08:29 Speaker 7: Was disrespect for the Broncos defense. That the fact that they're playing in Mile High there's a quarterback who's not just a piece of garbage that just you know, you get caught up in the word backup or oh Nix isn't the one playing? And then it was five and a half. I thought that was too hard. Granted, I thought three and a half, which is only a two point difference, would be a lot more reasonable. But five and a half seemed like a lot, and all of a sudden, now it's four and a half. Maybe it'll even be three and a half before kickoff. 00:08:48 Speaker 2: Slow down, slow down. You got a long time before kickoff. Okay, there is a long time, I know. But you got your Bronco gear. 00:08:56 Speaker 6: On, got my Carl Mecklenberg, I got the old school logo. 00:08:59 Speaker 2: You got your pajama pants on, you got your sweat bands, you got your hat on, You're ready to go. 00:09:04 Speaker 7: You underwear and you do not wear underwear this time, Royal Blue underwear. 00:09:09 Speaker 2: Yah seton. 00:09:10 Speaker 3: I love the sweat bands. He's like wristbands. I know, I'm not sure what you know, a little hand. They're a little drippy. 00:09:18 Speaker 6: I went back in the house because my Royal Blue wristbands. 00:09:21 Speaker 3: I do think Todd has a good point. I just think he's delivering it the wrong way. People are putting a lot of just in that one quarterback move and forgetting about all of the other factors. It's not like Drake May necessarily is this proven force in the playoffs. 00:09:35 Speaker 6: Either. 00:09:35 Speaker 3: He's had six terrible quarters back to back to back to back to back, and I think he's had eight turnovers in the last six quarters. It's very possible for it. You know, maybe not which quarterback wins the game, but which one doesn't lose the game. And Jared Stidham could be very capable of not losing the game and letting his defense win it. 00:09:54 Speaker 2: Well, you would think that Sean Payton would probably have a reduced workload for Jared Stidham, that he's not going to give him the Bnick's playbook. I wouldn't think he said he's gonna let him let it writ And yeah, well Mike Rabel's gonna let Drake may let it rip. And you know, so he hasn't, but he hadn't played well. 00:10:15 Speaker 3: He is not He has not played well in the playoffs. 00:10:19 Speaker 2: His legs might be more important than his arm in this game against that Denver defense. But hey, Patriots played well. These are good defensive teams. And when it was five and a half, I certainly like the Broncos in five and a half at home, you're just asking your quarterback just don't do anything crazy. It's all. You don't have to try to be Caleb Williams or you know, Josh Allen, don't don't do anything like that. Just take what they give you. That'll be enough and our defense. So Todd, I'm kind of well, I was at five and a half, now four and a half. I don't know at one point. 00:10:57 Speaker 6: Now you feel a little better about things. 00:10:59 Speaker 2: Well, I want you to feel a little better about things because you were. You're a sad boy this morning. 00:11:05 Speaker 7: I'm glad they're underdogs. I prefer them being in the underdog role. I just thought five and a half for whatever reason that, I was like, wait, they've got way too many other elements to that team other than you know, as good as bo Nix is and Stidham's a. 00:11:16 Speaker 2: Question, but who cares? 00:11:18 Speaker 6: I do? Obviously I'm very. 00:11:19 Speaker 2: Bad, I know, But who cares what people think in Vegas thinks? And all you need to care about is your team. 00:11:26 Speaker 7: Have at least one more point than the Patriots when your zero was there at the end of the fourth quarter. 00:11:30 Speaker 2: How good will it feel being a four and a half point underdog and you win the game and you're going to the super Bowl. 00:11:37 Speaker 6: That is very fair. 00:11:38 Speaker 2: You beat the world. 00:11:39 Speaker 6: I don't know why I got caught up in the number. But I saw that five and a half. We went from one and a half to five and a half. 00:11:44 Speaker 7: Depicity was like six point jump because we have a different quarterback. 00:11:47 Speaker 2: Because everyone's ring the headlines and put the Patriots and the. 00:11:52 Speaker 6: Seahawks. 00:11:54 Speaker 2: We were at one point, We're just sitting around talking and Seaton looks at me. I look at him, and we just started laughing. Listen to this, dude, because you were you were just talking to yourself. 00:12:06 Speaker 6: Not to mention, not understanding how betting works. Are having to come up with the pointsprit. 00:12:10 Speaker 2: Yeah, I said, hey, it's okay, now it's only four and a half. We won't even play the game then at this point, and I'll just give the By the way, Todd, you don't get those points, Okay, I don't know. They don't give you four and a half to star. I mean, I would love to see that the scoreboard where Bronco's up four and a half. Does No, it does not? All right, set watch the focus. 00:12:31 Speaker 3: Yeah, we're going with how do you feel about your team chirping before a game? 00:12:34 Speaker 2: Love it or hate it? I hate it. 00:12:37 Speaker 3: I hate chirping before a game. 00:12:39 Speaker 2: Okay, I eat it. I don't know what chirping means anymore. Now it's not like, you know, you're putting a bounty on people. It's just hey, and you're going to be in Cankun in two weeks. Wow, Now we're really gonna play hard. You know what. 00:12:55 Speaker 3: CanCon Tourism should do the opposite of the I'm going to Disney World. They should get the losing guys and be like, hey, what are you doing here? You're going to Cancun? 00:13:02 Speaker 6: Though that man? 00:13:03 Speaker 2: Huh. So when they talk to Jared Stidham after the game and they say he Steady, where are you going? And he says, can Coon, I'm just not That's not you know what I'm gonna do. If the Broncos lose, I'm gonna send you to Cancun. 00:13:19 Speaker 6: How's that with the team to hang out with? Yeah, I'll be fun. 00:13:22 Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, hope that's. 00:13:23 Speaker 6: About what happens. But I'll hang out with Franklin and the receivers. 00:13:26 Speaker 2: And sudden get good time. 00:13:28 Speaker 9: Great. 00:13:29 Speaker 7: I do think that your play should be to do the talking and then afterwards if you feel like you need to take a shot after you've thirty won, but before the game. 00:13:35 Speaker 6: That's why why it's okay once. 00:13:38 Speaker 2: Again, come on showing it. Okay, Sean Payton thinks he's gonna win. That's not a headline. Yes, Marvion, you know the Rams played the Seahawks this weekend too. Oh that's right. Wait is there any trash talk in there? 00:13:53 Speaker 6: No, nothing juicy. I heard Matthew Steffard say my finger is fine. What does that mean? Take it a shot, don't worry about my figure. 00:14:00 Speaker 2: Yeah, his finger where he can hold it up as number one. That's that's the only finger that matters here. All right, we're just getting started. 00:14:07 Speaker 3: Let me look up who the Seahawks head coaches to see if you said. 00:14:10 Speaker 2: Anything, Wow, that is mean spirited, like. 00:14:15 Speaker 3: For easily one of the most anonymous coaches in the NFL this year. 00:14:18 Speaker 2: Well because of the McDaniel and McDaniels and McDonald mc dermott, mcdammit. 00:14:26 Speaker 3: Too many mikes, too many, too many mix, too many mix. 00:14:31 Speaker 1: Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. 00:14:40 Speaker 4: Hey Is Covino and Rich from Fox Sports Radio Now. So I did see song Sung Blue, and I thought Kate Hudson was going to get nominated. She did. They like to call it she got a nom You got Timothy Challamey. He's the favorite with Marty Supreme. I think I've seen five of the movies. Five of the ten, Yeah, seton. 00:15:38 Speaker 3: I like Michael B. Jordan Getting a Lot of Love for Sinners. That's pretty great. 00:15:42 Speaker 2: More nominations than any other movie in the history of the Oscars. 00:15:47 Speaker 3: I haven't seen that yet. I've been meaning to, but I haven't watched it just yet. 00:15:50 Speaker 2: I've started a couple of times, but that's just it. I've gotten in about fifteen minutes and by all of it, what is it wrong? I'm Coogler, who I think is the director there. But Michael B. Jordan, you get two Michael B. Jordan's. Now does he where two Michael B. Jordan's nominated? Or is it just one Michael B. Jordans? Since he plays two characters in there, it's not a spoy oiler. 00:16:19 Speaker 10: I'm not going to see it now. Your boy Ethan Hawk nominated Best Actor? 00:16:25 Speaker 2: Yeah? How about that? Yeah? Yeah, I went to a birthday party and Ethan Hawk was there. This is a long time ago. Josh Charles, Yeah, famous actor and he had a birthday party, and I remember I spent a lot of time talking to his father about the Ravens, the Baltimore Ravens, I think. And Ethan Hawk was there, and Julianne Margalese was also there. From yes, I think I mispronounced her name and because I said to Josh Charles, I said, hey, I'd like to meet julian Marglise. He said, yeah, as soon as you pronounce her name correctly. And I go, wow, that's funny. Yeah, I said, did I get to Did I get the first name right? You know? Help me out here as soon as you get name right, Yeah, all right, okay, good line, Yeah it is yeah, yes, Paul. 00:17:17 Speaker 10: Best Actor in a supporting role. Benisio del Toro's in there, Sean Penn's in there. 00:17:22 Speaker 2: Yeah, our guy Sam Man did not make it. Yeah, you know, I don't want them to get him a nomination for something that was not nearly as good as how good he was in Uncut Gems. I mean, really that that's a big, big omission, a mistake on the Academy's part. Samman in that movie was unbelievable. You know, in this movie j Kelly with George Clooney, he's good, but Uncut Gems he carried the movie. He was unbelievable. If you haven't seen the movie, well, even if you've the movie, One battle after another. There is a woman who plays Leonardo DiCaprio's daughter Chase Infinity. Now she did not get nominated, but when you watch that movie, she almost steals the movie. She's incredible, incredible. But you got a lot of you know, Leonardo got nominated. Taana Taylor, she got nominated, So they got they got a lot of numbs in that, including Sean Penn and Beneath the Old Del Thoro. All right. Uh, I don't know if there's any any other omissions, glaring omissions. There any surprises there. I think people are surprised at Kate Hudson. But Kate Hudson, when she's in a scene, she is the scene. She takes everything. When she's not in a scene, you know, you miss her. And she's really good. She's really good. She pulls it off. She sings really well, and uh, you know it's dramatic and you know, a lot of parts in that movie. You know, I thought Hugh Jackman might overshadow her, but no, not the case. She was great. Yes, Marvin, we have the. 00:19:09 Speaker 8: Root for Diane Warren. She's up for Best Original Song. She's been nominated seventeen times without a win. 00:19:18 Speaker 2: I you know who is up? I think I'm not quite sure. I think that this He did the soundtrack for One Battle after Another? Is it? Johnny Greenwood, the guitar player for Radiohead. Radiohead, Yeah, he's been nominated before. I don't know if he's won, but I think he does the soundtrack for One Battle after Another? 00:19:43 Speaker 10: Yeah, Poet, He's nominated for Music Original Score. Johnny Greenwood One Battle after Another? 00:19:48 Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, Okay, so that's it. That's all I got my I have to go see a couple of these movies. Although my wife saw Hamnet, which is Hamlet's brother Hamnet, and uh. 00:20:04 Speaker 6: That's not real, No, it is Hamnit. I thought you were making it up. And I was like, that's a good joke. 00:20:10 Speaker 2: No, it's Hamlet's brother is Hamnet, and and the and the woman in there is is considered the favorite, the biggest favorite for any category. And I don't know who she is, but uh, I said to my wife, I said, how great was She said, No, she was good. I said, she's an overwhelming favorite to be best Actress. 00:20:34 Speaker 10: Yes, pony Hamnet sounds like a Saandler movie where he's the goofy younger brother of Hamlet. 00:20:41 Speaker 6: I honestly thought you were making that up. Fritzy, What did too her of that? Shake tear? 00:20:46 Speaker 4: Like? 00:20:46 Speaker 6: I don't understand, just taking a letter off? 00:20:49 Speaker 9: Shaked tear? 00:20:52 Speaker 2: All right? Eight seven seven three D P show email under sdpadan Patrick dot com Twitter handle it TP show. We'll talk some football with Devin mccordy Football Night in America, former defensive back with the Patriots. There Dennis in Long Beach, good morning, Dennis, what's on your mind today? 00:21:10 Speaker 11: Hap be made Friday. 00:21:11 Speaker 2: Gentlemen. 00:21:12 Speaker 11: First of all, Dan, I think you could be in some hot water because you have thrown a bomb in the middle of the Fritz household. As missus Todd, Fritz will be cheering like heck for the Patriots so she can go to Cancun. It was stated for millions of people who listen, so there is an all contracts she could enforce. So it'll be interesting to see that dynamic between his wife reading for the Patriots and Todd getting extremely upset with his wife and as Broncos as they lose. Secondly, regarding a quarterback for the Raiders, I would be in favor of them drafting Mendoza, but bringing somebody in and lay Mendoza. Now you're sitting for a one season probably two, as we build a team and you learn how to play in the NFL. 00:21:56 Speaker 2: Well, don't you have Geno Smith already under contract? I think for one more year. 00:22:02 Speaker 11: Look at Rogers Young. There's so many great quarterbacks in the past. That's what they did. They sat and they learned the game and they built the team around him. And I think that the first round pick has greatly over died for most cases, but in this one, if they can build a team and then slot them in later, there's a better chance of doing that and succeeding and getting a great quarterback in three or four years. 00:22:23 Speaker 2: And yeah, but I trust the Packers to build a good team. I can't trust the Raiders to build a good team. Dino in New York, Hi, Dino, Hey, Dan, how you doing? Good Bye? 00:22:39 Speaker 12: I'm shocked at the last caller of the last hour saying the Raiders should possibly trade the pick. Yesterday was forty two years since the Raiders won their last Super Bowl. You know how long this team's been looking for a good quality quarterback play Rich Gannon was the last guy in the early two thousands. There's no scenario where they don't take this kid at quarterback. And Dan, you and I must be watching different games, because I think the kid has elite traits. Some of your guests you've had on like Chase Daniel saying, you know, the process is incredible. His eyes are always in the right place. I mean these these twenty five or forty yards throws to the from one hashmark all the way to the other side on a back shoulder throw look elite to me. His toughness was certainly on display that was elite in the game the other night. He didn't put up great stats, but he showed a tremendous amount of toughness. He's got every off the field in tangible you'd want. I don't know why you're doubting him at all. I think he's going to be a. 00:23:39 Speaker 2: Good I'm doubting the Raiders. 00:23:43 Speaker 12: Do you know track record? 00:23:44 Speaker 2: It's it's a new regime in there. 00:23:46 Speaker 12: We got to give John Spyzeck and Brady a chance to draft some good players, and you certainly don't pass on this kid. There's no there's no trade package that you put. You have to take a quarterback if he's not good. If that's fine, it won't be on him, but you have to take a bite of the apples. It will be on him. We don't label GM's bust. We lay label quarterbacks bust. 00:24:10 Speaker 2: Do I want him as the face of my franchise, Absolutely, I just don't want him face first in the dirt, you know, every other play. I got to trust the organization that he's going to go in. Ben Roethlisberger went to the Steelers. He said they built the team he got in, then they found their quarterback. That's that's all I'm bringing up here. And there will be a trade package that will be surprising if you go and shop that pick. You're trying to tell me Arizona won't go all in? Would the coltskull go all in? The Jets are number two? What would they do? But I gotta be ready for Fernando Mendoza And does he have great talent? I think he's got good talent. I don't think he's elite. But what I want him as my quarterback if I had an offensive line, the answer is yes, and I had Rock Bauers in Ashton genty. Yes. This is about the Raiders, not about Fernando Mendoza, because can he get out of trouble? Because he's going to be in trouble. That's what I would want to know. Are you going to draft him and then sit him? You got Geno Smith under contract? Yeah, Pully, I see both sides of this. 00:25:30 Speaker 10: I think Mendoza is fantastic, can make every throw, but he's not a runner. I prefer a drop back passer, and that's kind of quarterback you want. But look at the Raiders. What they did last year. They had no offensive line last year, and they spent a top ten pick on a running back that was a flawed draft picks strategy. Ashton Genty had a terrible rookie year because he had no line around him. They should have drafted a lineman, a defensive player or whatever. Then you get a running back that doesn't cost you fifteen million dollars. 00:25:58 Speaker 2: You gotta have an offensive line, Okay. 00:26:01 Speaker 11: You do. 00:26:03 Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts with the Eagles might be a Hall of Fame quarterback. He walked into a great situation. If I put Jalen Hurts on the Raiders, Jalen Hurts is not an elite quarterback. He's not a top fifteen quarterback. Mahomes walked into a really good situation. Sam Donald walked into a really good situation. Sam Donald on his own with the Jets, he was a bust or the Jets were a bust. I gotta trust the organization, that's all. And Mendoza might turn out to be a very good quarterback, but he's supposed to be. If you're the number one overall pick, my concerns would be who you putting in front of him? And you take a running back. I got to have the offensive line to block for the running back. That's all Coleslaw in Colorado. 00:26:58 Speaker 13: Hey Colesloan, Good morning, Dana, Happy meat Friday. Who you're just still celebrating the big win for the state of Indiana. 00:27:08 Speaker 2: Good congratulations. 00:27:09 Speaker 13: We did have a lot of heartbreak, by the way, everything from Malice in the Palace, Purdue losing in the finals, Casers losing the Lakers in two thousand, you know, the Colts losing in New Orleans, Tyres popping his achilles. The list goes on and on, Andrew Luck retiring early, whatnot. But yeah, you said that Mendoza isn't great. He did and holds the completion percentage record at Cow with forty seven hundred yards top and completion that's better than Rogers, better than golf. Got two degrees from the two best business schools in almost the world. 00:27:46 Speaker 11: So we're just so proud of him. 00:27:48 Speaker 13: That was forty eight touchdowns this year. We're just living the dream. 00:27:51 Speaker 11: Thanks a lot. 00:27:52 Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a great player, great great college player. But we've seen great college players become good, average bust when they go to the NFL, and a lot of it has to do with the scenario that they're walking into. That's all. That's all I'm trying to say about him. You know, if Mahomes played for the Raiders, He's not a Hall of Fame quarterback, but you put him with a Hall of Fame coach, offensive line, hall of fame tight end, you have Tyreek Hill. Now, all of a sudden, those traits you know. Now he's not worried about Hey, am I going to get sacked on every play? This is less about Mendoza than it is the Raiders organization. Is all I did. And you know, let's wait and see what happens when Mendoza goes to the combine, when he gets in front of these scouts and these coaches and gms, and maybe he has you know, elite traits. And all I can tell you is my source one, you know, one who's a scout, said, he doesn't do anything great, but he doesn't do anything poorly. Like, he has good mechanics, he has all the things that you want to build on. And he would be a great face for the franchise by all accounts. Great kid, great family, great story, all of that. I would just be apprehensive if I'm you know, the Raiders. Can we build and keep him upright? Can we do that? Can we turn that around? Is he going to play it all this year? Yes? Marvin Well. 00:29:33 Speaker 8: How many organizations in the top ten of the draft this year? Do you trust the develop Mendoza? 00:29:39 Speaker 11: Oh? 00:29:39 Speaker 2: I wouldn't trust Arizona and I wouldn't trust the Jets. But I'm just talking about the Raiders have the number one pick, They have him if they want it. Now, what do you want to do with that pick. If you're Arizona, you're probably saying, hey, we'll take him. If you're the Jets, hey we'll take him. I wouldn't feel comfortable going there either. What are some of the other teams that are in the draft there? Campauling, teams that don't that do need quarterbacks? Cleveland at six. I wouldn't want him to go there. I mean, there's a reason why these teams are always there. 00:30:13 Speaker 10: So Miami at eleven, how about Miami breaking the bank to trade up local kid? 00:30:21 Speaker 2: Yeah? I know, what about Indy? Yeah, there's not a lot of great scenarios here for him. Yeah, I mean nobody focused on cam Ward because everybody was fixated on Shidho or Sanders. Cam Ward was running around for his life there for the Titans. You know, it might be that way for Mendoza. But if you trust the front office, you trust their process, you trust Tom Brady. Okay, great history is not on their side. 00:30:56 Speaker 1: Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup and then catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio dot Com and within the iHeartRadio app search FSR to listen live. 00:31:09 Speaker 2: Let's bring in Devin Recording. He's a Football Night in America analyst, three time Super Bowl champ with the Patriots, and part of the Super Bowl pregame festivities. Super Bowl that'll be on NBC and Peacock. What do you remember about your first Super Bowl? 00:31:28 Speaker 9: Man? The first one went fast. 00:31:30 Speaker 5: I remember we had a cool team dinner over there at Saint Elmos. I remember the bill came and one of the rooms I was in and we looked and we looked at each other, a bunch of young players. We were like, hey, Tom Brady and Wes, welcome in the other room. Take take this bill in there and see what they say. And they covered everything. I remember being happy. But I just remember when you go on the field for the first time. Super Bowl Sunday pregame, the amount of people you see everywhere, hall of famers like Lesure, very players in the NFL, celebrities, it just it feels exactly like where you wanted to be. And I remember my first time, I kind of forgot about the game so much happening where I was very fortunate to go back four other times, but that first time, you're just kind of happy to be there, which sometimes doesn't allow you to probably play your best game. 00:32:21 Speaker 2: If you were with the Patriots and you were facing Jared Stidham, how different is your approach to him than it would be bow Knicks at quarterback? 00:32:31 Speaker 5: I think play style and stuff, it wouldn't be as wouldn't be that different. I think with bow Knicks in there, I think you have to be more ready for him using his legs and running. I think the biggest difference would be preparation wise. I would tell our coaching staff, give us everything you got. Let's have as many calls in there starting on the first day of the week and see how much can we learn about Friday by Saturday that we feel good to go out there and execute. Because when you get a guy like Stidham who's a veteran but he just hasn't been in there. You want to give him different looks, you want to disguise. You want him to have to think about a lot of different things that you might not do as much of with bow knicks because he's been out there. So I think how you preparing, how many defensive calls you have will probably the biggest difference. 00:33:17 Speaker 2: Okay, but how do you disguise. We hear that a lot that you disguise something. 00:33:22 Speaker 5: I've always thought about, let's make it look like something that's not so. In football, there's so many different coverages you run, and sometimes people disguise by just moving around that doesn't do anything. 00:33:33 Speaker 6: And practice. 00:33:34 Speaker 5: When I used to go against Tom Brady, we used to have conversations and he would say, if you stand right behind one of the defensive backs that are on the line of scrimmage, I think that guy's blitzing and you're going to replace him. So when you're disguising, if you're not doing that, stand behind him, tell him to act like he's blitzing, and then after the snap, run to something else. And I always think about that and disguising something. If I want you to think it's blitz I want to show blitz and then don't blitz. I want to show that I'm not blitzing and then blitz. It's it's a very simple thing, but people get confused by thinking disguise is moving around. 00:34:09 Speaker 9: It's making a. 00:34:10 Speaker 5: Quarterback think he knows something and then taking it away once the ball is snapped. 00:34:14 Speaker 2: But did Belichick disguise the coverage when Russell Wilson threw the interception. 00:34:20 Speaker 5: No disguise on that. Everybody knew what that was. We played one play. I tell people all the time when he threw that interception, if they would have ran any other route, it would have been a touchdown. When they got in there bunched in tight, we knew that was when they ran their pick play. Brandon Browner did a heck of a job what we call jamming the point Lockett was on the ball, He got right in his face, kept him right at the line of Scrimmashew Malcolm Butler could come right behind and intercept the pass. So it was that was more to that had more to do with how you prepare, being ready to go. This is going to show up, and when it shows up, Malcolm, when it made. 00:34:55 Speaker 2: A play, you didn't expect Marshaw and Lynch to get the ball. 00:35:00 Speaker 5: Well, we thought that, but in that situation, we have three guys on the field to play the pass. Those three guys were thinking about the past. Everybody else was playing a run. Nobody else cared about Wilson. 00:35:12 Speaker 9: Throwing the ball. It was all about. 00:35:14 Speaker 5: Stopping Marshawn Lynch, and that's what our season came down to. 00:35:18 Speaker 9: At that point. 00:35:19 Speaker 2: I just thought run pass option with Russell Wilson made the most sense. That you can still use his legs and you can live to have another play. But throwing a ball over the middle, and I'm under the goalpost, I'm right behind you, Devin. I'm going to hand out the trophy. So I'm waiting. I think Seattle's winning the Super Bowl, And all of a sudden, I just thought, I said, obleep when I saw him throw the pass over the middle just and then I didn't even know Malcolm caught it. I thought, oh my god, they could have intercepted that. And Malcolm came up with a ball, and I go, oh, he's going to try to sell that he made the interception, And I said, oh, be damn. They just won the Super Bowl. Malcolm just won the Super Bowl with an interception. 00:36:05 Speaker 5: I thought it was one of the best calls that Seattle could have made at that point in time. 00:36:11 Speaker 2: Because I'm watching Marshaun Lynch. I'm right, I'm staring right at him because I'm going and I have my camera. I'm like, I got a great angle here. 00:36:21 Speaker 14: And it was funny because he had just got it down to the one yard line where he almost scored like high tower, like threw his body out there to help him trip and fall at the one yard line. And I know Bill always talks about earlier in the fourth quarter, they had a third and one situation and they ran the ball and we stopped him, and he felt like I discouraged them. But again, if I was the head coach, I would have been on the headset saying, give the ball to twenty four. 00:36:47 Speaker 9: I don't care if we'll give it to him two times. I'd rather lose handing the ball of him. 00:36:51 Speaker 2: He's NBC Football Night in America's studio analyst and three times Super Bowl champ Devin mccordy. I riled up up my fan base here. I said, if I'm the Raiders, I consider trading that number one overall pick. And what I did is I used a quote from Ben Roethlisberger saying, you've got to have the team ready to then bring the quarterback in. You have to have offensive line or skill position. The Raiders aren't ready, and you're going to ask for Ananda Mendoza to go in there to a organization that hasn't been trustworthy. I would at least be listening to offers from Arizona in the Miami, the Jets and see, because you need a lot. I just hate to see a rookie quarterback go into that situation. Your thoughts, Yeah. 00:37:41 Speaker 5: I mean I would agree with that to a certain extent. I think it matters how much you fall in love with Mendoza. Do you think do you think Mendoza is the guy that can battle through two or three really bad years? And I think that's a hard decision because exactly what you said, asking a guy to do that is what we see in Seattle right now with Sam Donald. Oh, with Sam Donald's fault. He's not that good. No, the Jets team wasn't ready for him to come in and beat a quarterback. So then you fast forward, he looks like the problem and he goes elsewhere. But I think The hard thing is is if you just think, like man the journey of Mendoza, what he's done being at Indiana. I think if we get this guy, even though we might get a top five pick, the next two years, those picks that we get will turn into these players that now will be able to go and win. Then, to me, you can't pass up on them. But I would definitely listen to see, hey, how do we get our team better that you know, maybe a bridge quarterback can help us win some games. And now next thing, you know, we go get our guy. We're ready to possibly be in a conference championship or a Super Bowl. 00:38:51 Speaker 2: Is Puka Nakua coverable? 00:38:56 Speaker 5: No? 00:38:56 Speaker 9: I don't think so. 00:38:57 Speaker 5: And I say that because I think I remember when I was young and we play against Larry Fitzgerald and was Larry Fitzgerald coverable? 00:39:05 Speaker 14: No? 00:39:05 Speaker 5: Not really, But because he didn't have the quarterback to make him even more dangerous, you were able to do different things that would that limited him. With Pookin Nakua, it's so hard because he's so good. But then Matthew Stafford understands when to throw it to him, how to change their routes, how to make him open, which makes it impossible, especially when you think about you got Devonte Adams on the other side, and you don't want to live in one on one coverage with him all game either. 00:39:30 Speaker 2: So what do you do? What's Seattle gonna do? 00:39:34 Speaker 6: I think I think. 00:39:35 Speaker 5: You you pick your poison right If you say we're gonna go one on one with Pooka Nakua, but you're not gonna have time to get him the ball and we're gonna take everybody else away. I think that's one way to do it. Or you double team him. You try to take him out of the game by double teaming them. But I don't think that's really Seattle's thing. I think Seattle's gonna run its defense and bed on getting to the quarterback, pressuring the quarterback, and their guys hold up in a secondary. They have one of the best defenses in the NFL. I think they'll say we're willing to test that Sunday. 00:40:06 Speaker 2: Would you be saying if you were facing Sam Donald in Seattle, Sam go ahead beat us. 00:40:14 Speaker 5: Yeah, you gotta make Sam Donald win the game. There, there's no doubt about it. And I think Sam Donald's come a long way. I think he has an opportunity. Now you think back, you know, four or five years ago, seeing ghosts and all of that. 00:40:25 Speaker 9: Here's a chance to be a guy in a Super Bowl. 00:40:27 Speaker 5: But through that, you can't let him just drop back and throw easy passes. 00:40:32 Speaker 9: You got to put pressure. 00:40:33 Speaker 5: You gotta take away Kenneth Walker in a run game and make Sam Donald time after time, make the right throw, read the right coverage. And I think the key to that is pressure in the middle of the pocket. Now running around the edge, how do you get pressure right in his face and make him move is what usually gives them problems. 00:40:52 Speaker 2: What was your playing weight about one ninety five? Okay? What is it like knowing the guy who weighs two forty is coming at you and you know it's gonna hurt, and you know everybody's watching on TV, so you do have to make an effort here? Oh what is that feeling? 00:41:09 Speaker 11: Like? 00:41:10 Speaker 9: You just brought up Super Bowl forty nine? 00:41:12 Speaker 5: I told Hi Tower and Jamie Collins, do not let Marshawn Lynch. 00:41:17 Speaker 9: Back here to me at all. 00:41:18 Speaker 5: I will help you at coverage as much as possible, but especially in these games, you don't even think about it because you you relish at the opportunity to just get that guy down. Just get him on the ground, don't give up the big play. But it's not fun deciding how I'm gonna get this guy on the ground. You just know you gotta get him, you gotta get him down. 00:41:38 Speaker 2: But you know it's gonna hurt. 00:41:39 Speaker 9: It's always gonna hurt. 00:41:41 Speaker 5: But it'll feel good because if you win the game, you get a couple of drinks in you after you. 00:41:45 Speaker 9: Celebrate, it all feels good. 00:41:48 Speaker 2: We were talking to our audience. You know, fan bases have that one play that they just can't get over, Like Buffalo looking at the interception against Denver, They're not gonna get over that. Is there a play that you're never gonna get over? 00:42:04 Speaker 5: Oh, super Bowl fifty two, Zach Ertz beats me on a slant and ends up catching the game when a touchdown. When we lost to the Eagles in Super Bowl fifty two, right before we got the ball back, our offense got the ball back with a little bit of time. 00:42:17 Speaker 9: But that play, I'll I'll never forget. 00:42:20 Speaker 5: I tell I talked to my kids about that play already, about how you can work your butt all be in the right situation and it just doesn't work out. 00:42:28 Speaker 9: And you got a choice to make after that. 00:42:30 Speaker 5: Either you say, hey, that's it, I'm done, or you rebounding, you try to play better next time in sports or anything in life. So zach Ertz, I love him as a person, but I hate him because of that play. 00:42:39 Speaker 2: Look like he pushed off a little bit here, dev. 00:42:42 Speaker 9: They all push off. They all push off. 00:42:44 Speaker 2: Yeah, but you guys all hold exactly exactly. 00:42:48 Speaker 5: That's why I didn't say. I didn't get mad at the ress. It is what it is, and that was a play that I'll never forget. 00:42:54 Speaker 2: Okay, explain this to me because I was told this by former player who played defensive. He said, as long as I keep my hands inside you like I can, I can hold onto one of your arms, I can pin one of your arms down. And as long as I'm looking back at the ball, then you can get away with some things. Is that a fair assessment of the new approach here? Or is it a new approach? 00:43:19 Speaker 9: Yeah? 00:43:19 Speaker 5: Grab inside, grab low. Darrell Reeves was the best at it. I remember training with him in Arizona and he would show us all these little things like he knew how when he was running down the sideline with a guy. 00:43:31 Speaker 9: He would be close to him and. 00:43:32 Speaker 5: He would grab either their jersey or their undershirt under the jersey and he'd be running with it. 00:43:38 Speaker 9: And he wouldn't just hold it the whole time. He would just. 00:43:41 Speaker 5: Tug at it a little bit and would catch them off guard. Like all those little things. He would always hold on those plays, but he knew how to hold. And the best defensive backs they. 00:43:51 Speaker 6: Know how to hold it. 00:43:52 Speaker 9: It's not do they hold. 00:43:53 Speaker 5: You got to just know how to do it and get away with it. And then when you do it for long enough, the rest they don't. They don't even look for it because they know you're just that good. And I got the opportunity to see act from Revis for a few years and that's why he. 00:44:05 Speaker 9: Was so good. 00:44:06 Speaker 2: But where's revs rank all time corners? 00:44:11 Speaker 9: Definitely for me for what I watched as an adult. 00:44:15 Speaker 5: For me, he would be one or two with Dion Sanders, some of the keep people out watched when I was really young. I would have to really go back and study in the game, but he ranks up there right at the top, you know, I know, like a Nias Williams and Darryl Green. When I was kids, like those dudes were the dudes. But Darrell Reevs from me, especially in our era, he was the best. 00:44:36 Speaker 2: But also, you know, you can look at stats and they can be misleading because you can say, oh, that guy only had x number of interceptions. Well, nobody was throwing in his direction, nobody was throwing in Dion's direction, nobody's throwing in Revs' direction. It'd be the other cornerbacks who end up getting, you know, a large bulk of the interceptions. 00:44:56 Speaker 5: Yeah, and I think I think what people forget is how how players impact the game, Like at twenty fourteen when we got Dereu Reeves even you know, two years before that, we got a key to leave, Like those guys dictated how we played defense. So when we played with Reeves and then Stefan Gilmour became that, we moved our whole defense to the other side. We shifted covers like when you're able to impact that and then the offense and basically what we say is we're gonna make the quarterback look at his reads, and the red says, go backside and throw at that guy, and the quarterback says, no, I don't want to do that. Like that that's a Hall of Fame player, that's one of the best to do it, and I think I got it. I was very fortunate I got to play with some guys who did that at a high level. And I think when we go back and just ree stats, we leave that part out of it, where guys come and they dictate the whole game plan and a single game is really hard to do. 00:45:50 Speaker 2: Always great to talk to you. Thank you Devin anytime. Dan good catching up Devin mccordy
