We got family in the building, my brother. I can't wait.
This is the episode everybody's been waiting on talking about
this finally happened.
Its about to be a goodie. Come on, man, the
real work for us.
Man.
We got sixteen year event man, pacers, legend, our family
to build a man, mister James Johnson, Man, big dog,
We appreciate you again.
Brother be man.
What for sure, bro, legend.
Man, we had to do it for sure? Man, that tea. Man,
just tell us how y'all linked up?
Man? Obviously I go way back. We go way back.
But the first time I seen James, he was walking
through the airport. I was leaving my wake for his visit.
He was coming onto his wake for his visit, and
they was picking him up dropping me off, and I'm
like he walking about.
I was like this. He was like what up?
And I was like, yeah, I'm gonna go to wait.
I just knew, like that be my Partnert like what up?
And then they told me James just committed. Man, We're
gonna have James. I'm like, dude, I've.
Seen the airport right.
He's like yeah.
I was like, Coach battle was like he cold, man,
he cold, And I was like he cold.
He was like, he ain't gonna be with us very long?
What you mean by that? He was like, he's gonna
go to the NBA. Damn. It was right. It was
got a coach battles man. He was right about a
lot of things. Coach b what made you choose White?
Like?
What made you commit? I went on my visit them
niggas was weak and was I tell the tru it
was a weak And I said, oh no, I'm gonna
play here right away, Okay.
Right away.
This is before you know what I mean. I ain't
knowing him like that. Now I know h l d
even camp before he left, You know what I mean?
It was It was definitely a business decision, more than
more than anything else. Shout out Pat Kelsey as well,
you know, making turn the Louisville around too, But sir,
he came around, made sure make sure that uh wake
force was the top priority for me too as well.
So hell of a scout, hell of a coach.
Yeah, a cool dude, man, come.
On, man, getting the bill back right.
For sure, y'all had a crazy introduction to college though
for both of y'all obviously what happened at RP coach processing,
But what was that, like I'm saying, linking up getting
on campus and then dealing with that before you even
get into school or school even start for real, Yo,
that I was.
One of the most like overwhelming I thought. I think
that college ever was at that time. Bro, Like after
that happened, I'm like, there's nothing else really that can
go on, that can like yeah, so even even even
that alone was like playing pressure free because we knew,
like deep down our loyalty. I mean that we deserved
this for our loyalty because anybody you could have just left,
you see what I'm saying, with no penalty or the
portal and all this shit they got going on. Now
it's like you leave now it's good money, but you
you you leave back then, you said now the year
you know what I'm saying. But that wasn't the case
for us, Like we got to go to choosing any
school we wanted to and uh, with no no penalties
of trading schools or whatever. So I think it was
our loyalty. And like I said, after something like that happened,
I don't think nothing really can shake you in college.
I remember the day you remember he took us to McDonald's.
That nigga drunk out my shape, no disrespect r I P.
He drunk out my shake. I was sitting in the front.
He was like, my point guard. Got to be in
the front, you know what I mean. So JJ, he
was in the back and he drunk out my shape.
I remember. I was like, and he drunk my shake
and JJ was like that's his shake. Now. After that
he passed away.
I was like, I don't want no more shakes, like that's.
Crazy no and not just yeah how long?
Like oh, Ship, he didn't We had went there.
He dropped us off. We went up to uh study tables.
He went to his office and they was like he
was running on the track.
He was been there for an hour. They came and
got us.
Damn bro. I never considered transferring.
I did because I only knew coach battle Yeah and
coach Prosser. I never met coach Kelson now and I'm like, Ship,
who's gonna.
Be the coach?
They like Coach Gattio almost.
And there was bulches out there. What happened? Like I'm
getting text message from other coaches like yo, come here
and come to our school, you'll play this. I'm like, damn,
they ain't even checking all y'all or nothing like to
pull up said for sure, but I was.
I ain't no coach Gattio at all. But we all
thug it up.
Yeah.
Me, I was with Pat Kelsey the whole time and everything.
I ain't know. I ain't no gaudio. What was next up?
I remember they just had us a coach p house
for like five hours. They didn't tell us nothing, you remember, right,
they were just down there eating pizza Krispy krean all
type of ship.
You know.
I'm a kid at the time, eighteen, Yeah, like this
ship cool like telling us. So we just think we
having a good ass time of coach pls. And they
finally told us like, damn.
That's nuts, bro man, that's crazy to start your college
screw off like that before I even get into like
real campus life and shi like that.
Yeah, it was crazy. Damn did you funk with the
new coach at first?
It was always cool with me him.
That's get a long game. I know this will what's
he going to doing this?
It was like I.
Ain't fucking got.
No, but he was. He was so good though.
Jeff was so good, like it was undeniably like he
was supposed to be starting. I'm knocking nobody, like they
know how we feel. It's all about yeah. But now,
Jeff was always always better than everybody real, like he
do moves what they used to call you by any
means necessary.
They used to call means necessary. I don't know Jeff
like that.
But he used to get a bucket any way on
five on one, you know what I mean. So it
was like people looked up to Jeff, but Jeff was
always silent, like you had to really know Jeff. I
think the person who got the best Jeff for real
is uh, it's Gary Clark, his roommate, another fellow fresh
like him and g like shared a different bond, but
me and him, we shared the were the best player
on the team bond.
And this is how we carried it this year.
It was like it was like it was like me
and him pushed each other in that sense, and then
we upstairs late night playing one on one the gym
only ones, and that we being there Saturdays, Fridays till
three in the morning to in the morning playing once
you know what I mean. So it was always mutual.
But like I said, L. D. Williams was was was
great for us. Is Smith obviously an NBA legend as well,
in my heart changed the game with his speed and
all that. He's a student of the game, all that.
Chase al Faruk, obviously Al Fruit came in. When Al
Fruit came in, all right, there was there was no
longer two best players came into that. Now we had
three best players. Were different. We carried a different board too.
Like I remember when Al Fruit came on his visit.
He came on his visit and I was what they
called chaperone. He was the guy to.
His guide or whatever man. He probably stand.
Wake Forest was giving it up like that at the time.
But right when he got there, I think he saw
a football football fight, two girls fighting the hallway. I mean,
I ain't gonna say who picked that up? That's you
got it back. It was crazy, it was. He was
not ready to go out.
He was like yo, coming away.
We knew he was Remember a white dude.
Ryan Kelly came through and we had all them fights yeah, going.
We had like ten fights, bro. He ended up going
to Duke though we started.
Yeah, Ryan Kelly, you scared of the ship out, But
it wasn't much. It was wake force, Like I never
said that about you know, was it wasn't just basketball? Yeah,
football niggas. What all from Florida? Uh yeah, I mean
all from Florida, my niggas. It was wild enough about
all the fights.
It was Hello fights. It was Hello fight. We were
just talking about what downstairs, but it was hell yeah.
It was fights. Mutual respect and uh, how was your
relationship with the football team? Niggas was cool?
I mean me and Jeffly.
I mean, I'm gonna go to the story first because
he made us cool with the football team because they
kept calling me Mike Conley when I first got there,
Oh lord, And I was like, y'all stop calling my time.
I don't like that ship and uh, me and j
J and G we was all just starting to get cool,
like we're just starting to figure each other out. And
dude called me Mike Conley again, and I got shitty
and j J was like, Hey, my nigga, if you
call me Mike Conley again, I gonna beat your ass
and football nigga Like what nigga and the LD was like, noh,
he'll beat yours. He's like, here, beat your ass, dude,
kind of chill that. That's how we got cool with
the football players.
Okay, okay, but then all of.
Them turned out young in turn.
But good guys, good character, a lot of chip bond
that's my brother, Aaron Curry, Yeah, a c ac even Fawns.
Man.
I know a lot of people go, I'm gonna get
backlashing that with the basketball.
But.
Smith was cool, great human oh man.
Obviously your freshman yeary'll get in there. You know what
I'm saying, y'all get active. I have a little bit
of success. But let's talk about going into that second
year where it got real. Y'all was nasty. What was
that feeling?
Like? Man? Shit, Jeff made us feel untouchable for real,
No bullshit. I mean, like, keep it a being like
we went to Cali. I think we went to California
right that seventy six classical Anaheim Classic or whatever. Jeff
went crazy. Yo. One of the dudes were watching my
film this nigga jumping out the gym. What do you
play for bulletin college.
Yeah, I forget the brother's name, but some was bouncy.
So Jeff get a still. I think you get a still.
Some rebound, he take off, Jeff take off on Bro
punch him. I think after that, everybody knew he was
gonna win that tournament. Like, yeah, there was mad teams
there too, we did, but like I said, Jeff led
the way with that and h our sophomore year, he
was a killer man. All them accolades, everything that that
shit was well deserved, especially like our team.
You know what I mean, we were stacked.
Y'all start off no more.
Nah, we start off like twenty five. Damn we got
to one though. That's because of them though they was.
They was special.
Bro.
Like our practices, we all was assholes in our own right, right.
We always like assholes. Like one thing about j J.
He always practiced hard. It was give give me a
day or two. I'm like, you know it.
Always there's no practice alls doing day. You can't be
a practice all American Jay.
He always practiced hard and he rolls the level of
practice every day. But he you see his energy. He
always talking. He always was like the vibes and our
freshman year, he was like that. So now I know
him as a sophomore. So they always just roll like
they made me better player. They did that, Like I
knew they was going to the NBA. He came back.
He was supposed to go his freshman year. He did
me a favor, you.
Know what I mean.
I begged it Paul's but I begged this nigga.
Out to leave.
I'm like, yo, if I'm a first round pick, I'm like, yeah,
but win this chick. Yeah, yeah, you gotta come back. Bro,
We're gonna be good again and we're gonna be nasty.
Like I can't do it, bron. He called me, like
I'm gonna come back. I'm like, for like you ship
if you don't want to me asking what was that?
What was that decision making process for you? Like obviously
could have went to the league as before, and what
made you come back?
You know, when you're young, you're naive, you know what
I mean, Like I was naive to the fact that
like we really win this mall, you know what saying,
Like I've always been that way, like anything with anything,
Like I really believe we could have won that motherfucker.
And that's why I came back, Like about that, like
and winning with my brothers too, Like the fellow fresh
was something fist that that's what Jeff, Gary myself, that's
what that's what we called each other whatever. But man,
we was fishy, know, like yeah, and we thought and
we thought.
Gary was gonna play more.
He had a burner.
Burner.
Gary had a burner, one of the best.
Like he's one of them dudes that Like I said,
if Jeff and I was playing one on one side
of the court, he on the other side of the
court with the chair going around the chair and getting
looks up, I'm like, damn, this nigga dedicated. Why didn't
he play?
What was what was the issue with politics?
I don't know, he just never. I think they liked
Harvey Hell better honestly, and he was older. Yeah, but.
Harvey Hell shouldn't have been playing over the respectfully.
I think that's.
Just say respect How would have been if it was
in il air, wow, because y'all all would have been
you know what I'm saying.
His sophomore year, he probably insane. He probably getting seven
million dollars bro No after your.
Probably I probably would have been in trouble summertime for years.
I mean that like these kids nowadays, they got they
learn about this, you know what I mean, Like we
didn't learn about that ship coming up or even or.
Even while we were there.
In fact, like now they're getting this so poor, so
so so fast that they're prepared. Their parents are preparing
them for it, they got managers preparing them for it.
So you know what I mean, shout out to them.
Obviously they should be getting this bread, but but they're
more prepared. I think they're far more advanced. And what
we were in social media this era. They're light years
ahead of us at that age, you know what I mean.
In fact, they getting paid the highchoal about something the
college they didn't a millionaire yawn there, but rightfully. So

they get way more, a little bit different it.
Was before I did eight years, eight hard years for
sixty years.
Oh god, I crossed some niggas can run, but I
don't know.
I think they would have made that shake.
Bro.
Yeah, but every school in Carolina would have pulled together,
keep going.
Say yeah, they're like, hey brother, North Carolina, my brother,
we got six milks.
They changed the Jursday for US boys would have left.
But that back of my jersey bureau.
So that the college it was, man, but I will
talking about your sophomore legendary was like what was that?
Like?
We always tked Jeff, but it was like that day
that Yalla beat North Carolina, man, because that was a
crazy game. Man, that ship was standard. I felt like
we was the better team. And I mean I don't
I don't believe better coach, but were a better team.
Facts. That was It was like even when.
We beat dope.
Jeff didn't want nobody running on the court, like he
felt like I felt like that ship was normal, Like
you know what I mean. We were supposed to do
that in the court.
That was our freshman year though rushman year were supposed
to be.
Yeah, no, not the first second year. Like whatich'll wrong
on the court for? That was offensive?
Facts?
Who was the harder team?
He was number one in the country, that's a fact.
Carolina harder than do at that time.
Carolina was.
Like, how all the Dukes spoke or whatever they say
with the then that I don't think that's that should
bother you.
Nah, they was beating our ass there.
Yeah, still like thirty. We came back though, but we
was getting thirty. Yeah, it got rocking in that mom.
I don't remember we started. We came back, but it
was too late. Yeah, it's just too late.
We came back.
Cameron the doorboy man, I wanted.
To talk to you about school, like being asked school
before we get out of the college part. Like I
told the story one here one day about us going
to mind class. People thought, and I wanted you to
tell because he was in my class.
M They put James Rico. I ain't know.
This is the truth. He was in my class, yo,
So you had to you had to put a mask
on and then you become the character, you know what
I'm saying. So like you like lose yourself to this
world or whatever. We had to do mine, like my honey,
I don't know what they call it.
Money. Yeah he didn't sound about right. Yeah, fuck you
in the chair.
Okay, anyway, long story short, my mess. It was his
it was his turn to go up. Whatever you yeah,
my man, it was it was his turn to go up.
So he get up there, and I'm telling you what
the bigga.
He was killing this thigga said.
Her niggas believe me, the little step day like you mean,
he was a man, you know what he was.
He was getting that easy trad right over there, don't
like and then you know how they forget about it
and then he got oh yo, I was like that
was like himself, like you know, Jeff to himself. Yeah
too cool is a great one too, nah, but he's
always to himself. So watch him get out of himself
to do that. Manig I was in that joint like.
Yeah, we had hip hop dance class again.
Oh yeah. Hip hop.
Yes, like seven in the morning. Hip hop was crazy.
The routine was crazy. Oh man, that's hilarious.
Bro, Hey man, I know Jeawaukee's underground hilarious shouts of
white Man.
I made a d man Milwaukee. Ye hey, I'm not
as good as that.
All right, man, we need some drinks.

out to the merch for sure.
Salute man.
Yeah man, Yeah, y'all wait, I told you all the time,
y'all Waite team needed thirty for thirty bro, especially all
the like the success all y'all had, like you're talking
about y'all talking about is talking about all y'all went
to the league? Man, what was that moment like for
y'all was like, all right, we're up out of here.
Did y'all know, like collectively or did I just find out?
I let him tell you first, what's funny shit?
As soon as that fourth quarter second half? No, right,
I'm saying, fay.
What I walked up the next morning, Bro me and Gary.
Gary like, man, we got We're talking about class and ship.
I'm like, man, damn, everybody where Jane's ship calling j
j where you at? He said, I'm in Cali. Brother,
you can have all the ship in my room. He's like, yeah,
I left the keys in the drawer on my truck.
The luck to you, boy, I said, day, I wouldn't
have got that truck that.
Was rolling up.
I was about to get that one more time. Jay
win it keep everything.
I never.
Keep very sor to guy Bro.
He said, tell for rook man, they can have them
shoes and ship. Jordan's in there, like they just go
to his room. He just got the door open. The
doorroom just wide up.
Damn.
They're grabbing all the jays and ship.
My damn. You was considering coming back.
Yeah, I was thinking about coming back because I didn't know,
like they was first round pick. They was guaranteed. I
wasn't at first then uh remember he was, he was
going already. I had that call with the the coach
and stuff, and he sucked up.
Letting me hear that.
Yeah, they all gonna get picked in the first round.
Said I'm going lord. I was hyping with my boy
told me coming. I was like, oh, Paul is that
I was repeat, you know, I was hype when I
got that phone call. He was going to go to
the league with me and all that so and we
did it. I always loved telling that story, like we
came to wait for us together, we left together.
Bro Hell, yeah, man, that happened for sure. Man had
campus rocking.
What was that like for you? Man?
That process to get drafted and actually, you know what
I'm saying, beneficial ANBA player man walking across that stage.
That ship was hard as how I'm talking about. I
think I had like ten eleven workouts some I repeated,
like I went back to the same team twice. We
work out workout. Those workouts was tough Phoenix.
And uh.
Toronto.
Oh I heard that Toronto workout brutal, too nasty work.
I heard it was brutal.
Man.
I'm talking about back and forth layoups right hand, left hand.
Damn he is like a drill crazy Really you do
damn full court layups?
Yeah that sounded and ship.
End of the story. I ain't going to Toronto.
It was harder ship to get in that motherfucker anyway.
I was like, man, where you had your best workout?
No, I love Toronto.
Who'd you best workout of ast you feel during that time?
And damn I could probably come here.
Ship. I had a couple Charlotte, I thought I did.
I thought I did well in Charlotte. Yeah. I thought
I was going to Charlotte for sure. Coach run, Yeah,
he was doing more teaching. That's why I loved his
His whole workout was he was teaching us. He wasn't
even were It wasn't even about the the athleticism or
the talent for real. He wanted to see if you
could pay attention and lock in with that kind of
you know what I mean. I thought I was going there.
I didn't have to show too much. But I ended
up going to the bulls and actually was a blessing
sixteen pick.
I take it every time.
Yeah, being a bull about you got one of the
best rat class of all time, especially top to bottom.
Look at all the Hall of Famers, all the success people. Yeah,
I legendary class boys still getting to it.
Man, I remember when you got drafted. I called, I
called you. I was like, he got drafted. I was
still waiting. I called him.
I was like, damn, nigga, you got Draft sixteen hyped.
He was like, you up next, nigga.
You know you got You're about to get hype when
they call your name because going to Philly Drew, he
was like, damn, he's like about that ship. Dn't you
about your time coming in? I'm gonna call you when
they call your name. I was like, oh ship, I
got nervous as fun. Then they called me my name
at nineteen. He called me back like I told you
were in this log I was. I just thought he
might going back to back. It's about to be tough,
he said.
Damn.
I already knew it though.
Yeah.
That season, that sophomore season was that ship was an
epic ground for you.
Brother, nah man appreciate it, man, yeah, Man, I was
really hooping for you.
I know Ann harpart too much, but y'all was really
like whooping ship like the way that y'all was doing it.
Bro fel like it's like a real nigga you team.
That's why everybody was rocking with. In fact, that's what
b why you trying to say, oh ship. They put
that ship on wax too. It was on the papers.
They were like, yo, do nothing, but and one player
they don't got no stability is crazy.
Wow.
While we was putting the belt on them, the fan section, everybody,
yeah want that they have to stop the game and
all that. Like the coach. Their coach came out like, yo,
let the boys play. Hey, I ain't never went to
a gym.
It was all white people with white shirts on.
Oh that looked crazy in there. Look crazy. They looked
crazy there.
That's a fact.
Yeah.
He was like we walked in there, we all was
just looking like that.
Said was different.
Did he play? Did he play?
Good?
Againt y'all knowing?
But before that, I ain't never seen no one do
like a T shirt day college?
They had all T shirts on. It was crazy. He
like good though.
He probably had like twenty five Yeah.
Yeah he was valid that night. Damn. But was that
your most environment? Hard color guess?
Yeah, why you ain't have none for y'all. All that
environment The worst for me was probably in C State.
M hm.
He state that was crazy.
That was crazy. What they had postals niggas and J J.
Hicks that's what.
He was.
It was nasty.
But he stated that was ruthless.
Broee, what murderous runoff for real. For if you look
at that time, perre Bro, you had all the heavy
hitters out there.
Yeah, Maryland was bad too. Maryland was the fans was
crazy too, grievous, went crazy. What it was like, man,
with some of your best known you didn't want of
your business.
That's what.
I'm gonna tell you all about the game. While we
in college.
I remember my boy, we remember you punched on Trevor Booker, right,
Lola was crazy. It was a wild team, bro. I
love this nigga crazy once a Clemson.
Yeah, that nigga's crazy, man, all love. We had one
of the cooldest today.
Yeah, it was the coolest to remember that Trevor Booker.
I did clem after all. Brooklyn too.
Yeah, Now you was killing that game up. You had
thirty fifty rip oh yeah, was out fifteen.
Shooting at the trying to get the rebound. You had
four sisters team. Yeah, he was efficient. It was too
that's official.
He was cooking.
I started within the system.
That's number twenty three. The boy a tough or what
y'all was getting to it?
Man? What's a rookie year like? Man? How many points
I had that game.
He got fifteen rebounds and he was getting on that
glass espec, especially what you call that give you up fifteen,
I'm about to stay.
I don't get looking at Yeah, I fed a double
chick from my old copy.
Fifty monster game. Yeah, it was kind of nice. Now
y'all chasing before y'all was hooping. Bro, y'all had a
squad nigga for real? Man, Yeah, what was rookie like?
You're like, man, you got a chance to play one
of our favorite players, I mean everybody like Derrick Rose
and he was cold.
I remember you talking to me about Derrick Rose your
rookie year, You like, bro cool as hell?
He cold?
I was like, damn he cold? You're like cold, bro?
He cool as fuck? Though.
Yeah, he kept saying that, like me a cool nigga,
And I was like, damn, for real, what was your
rookie year?
Like, bro, Man, rookie year, I have Annie Dell Negro
and I swear he ain't playing me because he went
to NC State. You know what I mean?
Bro, That's what I felt.
But it started off with it like I'm playing Summer
League first, I feel like I'm one of the best players. Obviously,
summer league and regular season. Even summer the league in
preseason is two different level for sure, you know what
I'm saying. Even then preseason came, I felt like I
was still one of the best. And you know, every
team I've ever been on, I've been that nigga or
one of them that niggas, you know what I'm saying.
And so I get I get there, I get to
Chicago and I feel I still feel like that. You know,
my confidence, I really feel like it's through the roof.
It mean, my work atic all that.
So I get there.
First thirty forty games, I don't even play. I was
right with you, brother, at all, I don't play, and
I got a great guess too. Like Brad Miller, Kurt Heyinrich,
Derek always was like, keep me.
Humble with it, like, bro, look where you at.
You know before before Derek was the philosopher that these
guys know, like I know, the young just second in
the league, Derek, you know what I'm saying, still was
kicking knowledge even that young.
I feel like that's why Lou said what he said.
Joe Kim said, well, he said a bottom about even
though he was younger, that they still listened to him
when he was older. It felt like he was older
the way he spoke, you know what I'm saying. So
but anyway, I'm with him, keeping he keeping me humble
with it. But at the end of the day, I'm young.
I got more money than I ever had in my life.
You feel me, and.
I'm going out, Yeah, I'm going outside like for real.
And you know you you young, like I said, naive,
so you feel like you damn you're punishing them. You're
not playing you and not not giving you this opportunity
and all that not knowing you, sabotaging yourself and your
self worth.
You know what I'm saying. You know they say the
less you've seen the more, the more money you get
paid for your appearance.
You know what I'm saying. I was the opposite. I'm
going going to the spots for free, you know what
I'm saying. And that shit was really the start of
a of a bad side of the league where you
don't want to be in. You knowee what I'm saying
right where they start getting opinions and and shit starts
getting fabricated and you can't stop. It's a snowball fact.
But long story short, that shit came with it, and
then Lou gets hurt, wal Dane gets hurt. I get
my opportunity, I start playing. I'm playing well, but I'm
still young and dumb. Yo, you get what I'm saying.
I'm still outside, I'm still wilding and I'm playing at
this point. So it's like, Yo, all I gotta do
at this point is do everything I love to do
is who you know what I mean, work out, go inside,
repeat you gee what I'm saying. And uh, wait, so
you're still going outside every night? Man? You got that tig.
Man, I'm outside everything.
To keep night. Okay, I'm outside every night. I'm getting
I'm getting real, you know what I'm saying, No funny
shit like real. So so I'm doing that while I'm while,
I'm getting the minutes now that I want it. But
now I'm coming back and uh the next day shooting arounds.
I'm smelling. Wow, you know what I mean. Like, you
can't brust that ship off.
You know what I'm saying, You can't shower that ship
off soon as you start sweating outside.
I mean yeah, yeah, so I don't know this, you
know what I mean.
I'm not aware of this and then you know, the
older guys is telling me, oh, Jay, like you gotta
stay away from coaches. You gotta do this they're doing.
They do diligence as far as like being great vets
like it had nothing to do with them doing this
shit to myself. You know what I'm saying, thinking I'm
hurting some that really, nigga, all they do is just
get another asset. You know what I'm saying, I'm not
realizing that. I'm thinking the NBA need James Johnson. No, nigga,
James Johnson need the lead. And so that ship, that
ship right there was It was an eye open especially
after your first year. You know, back in the g
like you signed two years, two years guaranteed and the
other one is a team option.
But after your first year, that's where they decide if
they're gonna keep your option. Yea, yeah exactly.
So I'm going into the team meeting, They're like, yo,
we don't want to do this, but you work hard.
You know the normal like threatening, get your shit together,
we want you and all that. But by that time,
it was too far gone down. Vinnie Negro's gone, Thibodeaux comes,
you know what I mean, Thibodau's coming on fresh off
of championship, so he knows from defense head coach Championship.
You know what I'm saying with Doc, like it has
pedigree on him. So it's like he knows what he's
talking about this net on first day of practice, some
put me on the Penny team back then, there is
no two ways and nothing like that. Penny team is
the niggas that's trying to make a team, trying to
make that last spot, you know what I'm saying. And
I'm guarantee at this time, So I'm like, Yo, he
don't know me from nothing. This is before I knew TIBs.
Like as a man, well, I respect Tips with everything.
You know what I'm saying, Like Tips is a great
coach and a great human to me, like I have
Dorel with TIBs. But at that time, like he's trying
to raise the nigga that was already raised by something
far more worse than him. You know what I'm saying, my.
Father far more worse than you.
So them intimidation ship that don't scare me, you gee
what I'm saying, But anyway, get traded from there, go
to Toronto I'm in Toronto. I'm in Toronto loving it.
I'm getting her in a chance for My first game
with Toronto was against the Bulls. Let's start, we get
that dub, you know what I mean? Coach coach Treill
J Traill j T. He was like, uh yeah, yeah,
I love that guy. He's the one who really gave
me my first chance to like go get a bucket,
go hoop, Like, don't look at me when you make
mistakes and ship, because you know this this game will
cause anxiety and niggas. Like if you let it break you.
You know what I'm saying, You let that ship break
you every time you grab the ball like your ey
is gonna get wild. You just want to make the
right play. You don't want to fuck up all that ship.
So it's like if you let it break you. They're
psychiatrists in the buildings for ship like that.
God know what I'm saying.
Now, that's the interesting you say that because they always
talk about people who transit the league. Oh he was
so good in college here all this stuff. Why is
he only doing this particular role. It's just like dog,
he doing this wrong because he's trying to feed his family.
But he's trying to make sure he make this next time. Yeah,
he can do all that ship to do this and
not mess up, and that can just kind of limit
your game.
He's trying to do that at a high level and
then still mixing.
Yeah, you know how it is. But that shit is taxing,
especially on your mind frame. But like I said, if
you let it break you in the psychiatrists for ship
like that, I fucked. I fuck with the journey because
I would say me and you close.
I knew it, and I remember, I remember when things
been a little different and you came to the Hawks,
remember and we was talking, you was trying. I was like, damn,
JJ gonna be on the Hawks on me because he
made he was on the team. But my nigga is
so competitive, he was about to make the team so
competitive they love him be him talking to me like JJ, man,
this is what we was missing.
It's the perfect piece.
But we go play baseball and this dude we call
him good at everything, like we call him we say,
he's he's great at life, like he does everything well.
So I didn't know this need to play baseball, right,
So we playing baseball. I'm okay, Kyle KRP is real good.
All these guys.
It's a pop fly ball, boom outfield. JJ. Coach Budd
about to get it. He loved baseball. This is primary sport. JJ.
Let me get that. Coach Bud like he can't play here.
What he was he was sight this was for out three.
I'm not sure his old as even so I'm a
better on myself. I'm gona mean, he should have sold
the aspect on that side. The spectrums was.
But even wrong.
But you're wrong.
But I remember the day I know we I'm fast
forward in your career because I want to talk about
the Memphis part when you went to Memphis, because it
really turned up. But I remember when we played Miami.
He was in Miami and you hooping, he running the
pick and roll seventy seven, doing his ship, and I
remember coming to the bench.
You know, I was. I asked.
I was like, god, damn, we could have had that
ship and said fucked up, funked up, fund up, that's up.
And you might have said something to you and came
up to me because he was just like, He's like,
you're such a good player. These are the players that
you need. He's going to change the game. It was
him and Draymond. He was like, they're like point guards
that played the foe position.
You can put them on.
Anybody can. And he was just giving Ja so much praise,
and that was just like a whole.
NBA is bro.
And that's that's why I said. That's why I because
niggas wouldn't know. That's why niggas don't be in certain places,
like Nigga, I'm way better than you at baseball.
Don't make this about me being on this fucking team.
I'm he knows, nigga. Every bank was yeah, he got
need more pig for a catch, you need to be
behind the bad he got for real. Everybody, like the
whole coaching staff was hype about I was hyped.
Especially after training camp. I'm like, yo, I got my
guard back playing for getting out. Yeah, so we got
charge for that.
But to me, it's a great thing because I think
you went to a place really find your your skill
set and showed you what you do really well.
He went to Miami turned.
Up, Yeah.
But now after Atlanta, I went to Memphis.
Yeah, and that's what I really turned up for a
little you put on a show in Memphis.
Was having a ball in Memphis, and they let you cook,
they let you play your right right some of them highlights, bros.
Crazy. How was that going there? Though? They embrace you
right away? Yeah, most definitely. Like I said, like you
can carry baggage with you, right, Yeah, it's good. All
of my I was pretty much bad. It was like,
you know what I mean, I'm at the end of
my end. I just went to Atlanta, tried out for
the team, got cut, hear me, so like I'm in
the G League playing and then Memphis ten day when
I went there, it was like more like they wasn't
judging me. Yeah, you know what I'm saying. It was
more like, you know, how bad can this nigga be?
Man?
We got We got Zach Randolph and Tony Allen, and
I think I jailed with I jailed with the team.
I jailed with the management just off the strength of that.
Like you know what I'm saying.
They didn't look at me like the the person everybody
else or the other gems might have passed on or whatever.
It was more like, no, that's what their culture is
about over there.
You know what I mean.
But they do teach you how to be a professional. Obviously,
you know what I mean. They got ways around that
for sure.
Yeah, that's just around too much. We talked about Miami heat, sure,
heat culture. A lot of that is old to you,
if you know, you know for sure, what was that
moment like making the South Beach you know what I'm saying,
having some real successful years down there, man.
Man, nah it was.
You know.
I give a lot. I give a lot of credit
to you, Dannis. I always I always have because he
held a standard. You know what I mean. He wouldn't
let you saddle over there. I'm talking about with anything
for the single niggas, you know what I'm talking about.
He helped y'all out the club for real a lot
of times. That's real though.
Championships, respect.
And beyond that obviously, But he's the one who really
like showed like how to be tight knit and trust
each other because you know, the league is all about Yeah, yeah,
I trust you, but I want your minutes. Yeah yeah,
I trust you, but I want you to fuck up.
You feel what I'm saying. And I feel like he
was already above that by winning the championship and understanding
what it took to be a champion.
So I think off rip.
Obviously everybody in the gym, everybody on the team had
ma respect for him, but being able to to play basketball.
And even this is like even during the like the
pickup days, you know, the pickup days before the pre
year starts and even all that shit starts, so like
it's pickup days, and coach out there like, YEO, whoever
the best players, that's who's going to play. You fee
what I'm saying, Like, you know, we came in and
O nine, It wasn't always the best player was going
to play with the nigga who was getting the most
money exactly, Like you could be ten times better than
the person making at this time fifteen fifteen million dollars
for three years, four years.
That was big chicken.
Yeah, great money back then, and so and so you
finally get to the heat where they're like, yo, you
get to play your brand of basketball and if you're
the best player, I hear you going to play now.
I think everybody felt a way about that where it
just brought out the best and everybody on top of
ud obviously harping on like we built champions here, we
champions around here. Nig I wanted to win one of
them so bad, so bad over there, especially especially for you,
Donna's like, I feel like for u, d I think
he wanted.
Us to win it more for us, more than we
wanted to win it. More for us, you know what
I'm saying.
So that should show you, like the humility he has
and a given kind of person is gonna at the time,
he was thirty six too, like thirty six, thirty seven,
oh yeah, like twenty sixteen, sixteen, twenty seventeen. Yeah, oh,
but that's not that to me, that's not like old
the hoop, you know what I'm saying. Like to me,
like I signed with the team and I'm thirty six seven,
I think if I have a good training camp, I
give myself a chance. You know what I'm saying. Yeah,
you played. He was forty two, boy, damn yeah, because
he got second running seventy sevens with dragons, a lot
of the white Side and uh, picking rolls and handing
the ball off Dwayne Ellington, Tyler Johnson.
Of course, that's my beds.
That's my man's man's Like, I mean, the Johnson name
says says enough, But that's my man. That's not Whiteside
was crazy. He was man, he was nasty, bro He's
really the one who changed the whole. Like body fat
ship that nigga came in in humane. He was like
seven foot tall two fifty four four or five percent
body fat. Niggas was like, yo, dunk, he's a dunk
everything then Also everybody ship had had to get down
past that.
It was like you used to be alright with seven.
That don't need you ass six.
Yeah that ship really like that, man, what you didn't
believe it? I mean I believe it, but I'm talking
about well, I'm so fucked up. Even if I look
at the scale. I know I pictured Miami heat.
Locker room.
You know me, You don't me, j C.
My should have always been bad.
You know.
I can't go a week without without working out or something.
Ship that's that. I'm like a half something so I
think like that part of me that should get big
quick for sure, too quick. So like I always had
a thing about that. But that that ship is when
you got there. Though, they're finding you. They're losing bread,
damn bro because you're eating crazy. It's crazy broke. Cut
their on what I'm saying about what I'm saying. They
hold you to a standard though, that that even yourself
didn't didn't know you was capable of.
You know what I'm saying, And that's one thing I
will say about it.
That's why I feel genuinely that's why they can get
second round picks and no, no, not not drafted at
all and then make gym. Yeah. Yeah, it's definitely evident
as well.
Like you said, a lot of people who go to
Miami where they was getting that shit off a matter
where he was, you're gonna hoop, youre gonna get on
this court, right.
He did not discriminate at all.
That's what I'm saying.
They give everybody a shot, so I naturally feel like
that brings the best out of you, naturally because you
have a shot to play, not off off of anything
else that goes on around the bubble of the league. Strictly.
Am I a better basketball player than this guy on
my team?
Yeah?
You know, we move around a little bit. What was
one of your favorite season to play?
I'm always gonna love Toronto Chicago obviously, you know what
I mean. You get drafted in Chicago, I feel like
you're a kid you grow up watching Jordan's so yeah,
you get there.
You see all the the trophies is Jersey.
You think the banners and just automatically feel like this
is what you're supposed to be, you know, I mean
you dreamed about shit like that. So I think the
bulls for sure of Miami. Obviously still love Miami. I
still live in Miami, beautiful city.
In Memphis. The time I had in Memphis, dope, yeah, dope.
Highlighted said you go through okay, lod of my oh
got here, James Man, I want to question.
Yeah, well my favorite highs you bro, Yeah, drumming my
man's now, but smoke drum my Man's now. But yes,
he did me bogus over here. Boy, I almost had
to bring a nigga out. I buried you. Yeah, they
came back. Yeah he was wilder right here. Look at
my god, you mean look I get up calmly. I
don't want to commentate this because you know, like I said,
but yeah, that was that's my first I understand why
he did it. I didn't understand why you think it
was all right? That's found.
Up tardie base line slipper. I was like, damn boy,
he was a brave boy.
You know.
I respect that though, respect that way more.
Them type of players right there. Yeah, like we men. Yeah,
you know what I'm saying.
We men, you're making a play, You're making a player.
It's more of a raw ray.
Your team up while we're scared of this team, while
we getting thug bullied by this team. So like as
a basketball player, I understand. Like I said, when we
cleared up other.
Ship, I figured out. I got a texted him, unifier.
It's crazy.
I love this man, I want to talk about it. Listen, man,
I'll never forget.
Man.
We played the Milwaukee Bucks man and shit got real tricky, man,
and they played in our face. Man, and then it
was only right, man. They had to go get the
legend for our team. Man.
When you pulled up to that, man, all things been
great ever since.
Man.
It wasn't like we got the call to pull up
in the city.
Man, ship.
I was.
I was extounded. Like I said, Bro, I've seen the
build up. I seen the first year we was here.
Yeah, we didn't go to the off.
And then the second year we were like, yo, were
in this ship.
You know what I'm saying.
You thought, y'all, I'll be we wanted you to win
just for the city. But did you'll think y'all gonna
really want that game? Steven Terry Singer hurt. Yo, how
do you not think that that was hope?
Man? He was hoping, Yo, Bro run and his stories. Bro,
I feel like if it wasn't winning it, that was
the only other way. Yeah, Bro, there was only two outcomes.
He was gonna win a chip or that was gonna happen.
You know what I'm saying.
Hot, Okay, see, great players, great team all that. Like
the way he was, the way he was, the way
he wanted to start the game, like you know, normally
you know his game. Normally he's gonna get involved, get
people involved. He might give you you give me the
open three, I'm gonna take it and be honest, then
I'm gonna spray.
I'm throwing it up.
Exactly, aggress exactly. We've seen this before. Anytimes came out
that aggressive, we was getting the dub. History shows every
time he came out that aggressive way.
The numbers keep it real.
But out saw that unfortunately happened. That was I talked
to you all the time.
Man.
Obviously we ain't got a ship, but that is one
of the crazy playoff runs that I ever got to witness,
especially as a fan like you been around there, what
was a vibe like, man, because I was just whooping everybody, Bro.
I'm telling you it was normal.
Especially Andrew like he like does a great job of
like he don't get too high too low because they
even killed killer. You know what I'm saying.
Past obviously you know his vibe. So like TYREEVESE, he
was the more.
Of the one that was just like, yo, we got
this many more, this many, you know what i mean.
But we've seen this ship over and over again even
before this. This crazy run. What he did, what he
did in the Spurs in Paris, that's sixteen old, thirteen
old run by himself.
Yeah, you know what I'm saying.
I mean, DJ talks about it.
Y'all.
Niggas had a chance, he did, We had a chance player.
I think they control they probably bro, no way, you
know what.
I'm saying, y'all. I'm saying, y'all could have walked if
he didn't get hurt. That ship he's turning. All I'm
saying is just look at look at the end of
the half, look at after he got injured, and see
what the score is going into halftime.
No I'm saying what I'm saying, think about these niggas.
Someone y'all could witness motherfucker for real. Like we wanted
to win for the city for our show, we had
to do like we ain't nona give me he a niggas,
but we had to create some ship for the show
just because DJ is such a we hate on each
other notious too.
Yeah, we was pined every night.
He breaking, he blowing, He's blowing on the show.
Wow.
The other thing, that's another thing. It was like, yo,
everybody was bringing they best for Martine. Yeah, that ship
that ship Double A did Aaron Nath did Bro in
the garden.
It was impressive. It was kind of like you watched
the game the other day Nicks and the Cats. Absolutely,
so what y'all did is basically what the Niggs did
to the Cat said.
But the only thing is what how man? How many
minutes they had left?
Like seven? We had two?
Yeah, y'all did that ship in like a crazy man Like, Yeah,
Bro eliminated that lead Bro in like sixty five seconds.
Bro off on some dream shot. Every story Double know
JT No, Double put in pain. I'm talking after every
practice he put in pain too. So like to see
them shits going. Like I'm telling you, we're around each other,
Like we genuinely all fucked with each other. So it
was more like we get to see your work at
it on a daily BASI. Yeah, I wish I would
have I wish ty Resent get hurt. I would like
to see how that fourth quarter played out. Yeah, that
was a That was a hell of a series for
real basketball hit. It might not have been the most
attractive series because of the fans because they Yeah, but
with basketball, that was a good series.
Man.
That was I was great, basket amazing. Like we even
said it.
We was like, yo, whoever gets the first stand like
you know how like you get the first role win,
you want likely to win this ship. It was more like, yo,
whoever gets the first two games? Like you got to
win two in a row to be able to win
this ship. Yea fact, you know what I'm saying, Like
we would have got one in two. I felt like
we would have won that ship. Yeah, with confidence was crazy.
I was hoping bron these niggas really got the city on.
It's gonna be tough to recreate that. Yeah. I was
bringing people together that will never come together. That's what
you don't know. Nigga hoods and my town.
Was niggas was celebrated the nigga I was together, Bro,
I most hated nigga in my city.

Side of town.
As nigga niggas kill each other all that ship from
different hoods. Everybody was against this nigga.
Trust me, don't God tell me anything about Indiana. No,

My niggas about to get to it.
Yeah, growing up, training fighting always always allowed me to
be myself and hold my head high everywhere I go,
Like it always taught me like stay in the moment,
like enjoy the moment, enjoy that space. And I think
that ship helped a lot. Tight in a lot too,
Like everything I do period in life, Like I don't
care if it's skateboarding. I want to be better than
Tony High, you know what I mean? Being mex bike,
and I want to be better than Nigel. You know
what I'm saying. It is like I have a problem.
I don't care like I have a problem with wanting
to be the best or be better than everybody I
hang out with, you know what I'm saying.
So it's like.

everybody make the second one. One of these niggas on
the team, I don't want to say. His name is
Jamie Skin. Yeah, but we had one left. One left.
