There is more heat during this time of year if you're a team on the fence. The Houston Astros, without three of their top four or five hitters, just swept the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks have a number of players that are going to be free agents after this year, Zach Allen, Merril, Kelly, Josh Naylor, au henny O Suarez, who's having the year of his life. Let's get to rumors, Krats. There are a ton of teams that are interested in Gino. He fits with like half the contenders in the league, because who wouldn't want a guy available that's on pace for fifty five ish home runs on this season? He has been insane. So do you think that this series should tilt the Diamondbacks towards selling and should that include Geno Suarez?

Speaker 3: Yes, one hundred percent, because they're just to me, it's like fools gold. I have've watched the Red Sox for the last three games. I know they won last night, but some teams they're just not able to make the run that I think they built this team to do. To me, I think it's like it's one of those things that the Diamondbacks and it's not a full like breakdown and you know, start all over kind of thing. You're just getting rid of expiring contracts, and right now you have an opportunity to capitalize on the next five years if you make a decision for the next two months, in my opinion, and you Hitrez should be the guy, and you could actually set the bar for the entire trade deadline because I think somebody wrote about I think Bob Nightingale wrote about it the other day. Nobody with thirty five or more home runs has ever been traded at the trade deadline, Like you have a chance to add to a team that is still building for the next three or four or five years of a winning window for the Diamondbacks with probably big league guys. Are you Hinney Suarez is gonna give you big league guys back, So it doesn't need to be like, oh, like three or four prospects, what are we gonna get. He's He's to me, he's the Marquis piece.

If you're getting this version of Gino Suarez, he's the best bad available. So let's cue up a rumor. Se Trent Rosekrantz Todd Father, I'm going to you. You know, spent a long time with the Reds. Apparently there's some mutual interest with the Reds and the Diamondbacks, according to Sea Trent. Your thoughts on the Reds interest. Do you think that the Reds should be pushing Chips in? This could be a pretty big bidding war, even though you're only renting half a season of a player. The Reds might not make the playoffs. Do you think it's worth them shedding a top end prospect? This could get an a prospect depending on how you look at prospects, but this could get a top tier guy. Do you think the Reds should be in play for him?

Speaker 2: I think they shoulder what Kratzy always says, hundred percent. He's He's a solid dude. He seems to get better with time, just like a fine wine. He plays good defense, he's exceptional. Thirty six home runs right now. I mean, you know, as the older he's getting he's playing better, and he's at a bigger ballpark, you're still hitting home runs. If I'm the Reds, you bring him over. He's been there before, he's acclimated, he knows the city. I'm sure he would love to go over there. But yeah, you're gonna have to give up one of your prospects, and you have to be okay with it once you do so, knowing that you can get him and hopefully finish out a good year, make the playoffs, and you know, go out there these last two months or so and get going. Yeah. I don't I see any team that needs a third basement Yankees, Reds, but especially the Reds. I mean, why not? Why not take a chance on him since he's been there before, he was a fan favorite too as well, and he'll pop ten to fifteen more home runs during the year and help this team win. Crats.

Speaker 1: Okay, I'll read you something from Jeff Passen's article that was out yesterday, which we're going to dive into more tomorrow. It's got the teams that are all and then the teams that are kind of in etc. He's got the thirty team breakdown. We'll do a segment on it tomorrow, but he said the good news for the Yankees is that they line up very well with what the Diamondbacks are seeking as they consider moving Suarez, the most coveted player on the market. New York's ability to develop starting pitchers with excellent minor league numbers is near unmatched in the industry. What worries some front offices is the rarity with which those arms have turned into quality big leaguers. And then he brought up backup options for the Yanks. Remember we've had Jim Boden on multiple times mentioning how the Yankees of course have interest in Gino, but they highly value defense. They have a problem on defense. They looked awful against the Blue Jays in that eight to four loss yesterday. They've looked terrible in the two series against the Blue Jays defensively. So maybe they go for a guy who's more d heavy at the third base side and costs less. So some of the backup options he mentioned were Key Brian Hayes, who's an excellent defender, Ryan McMahon, who's getting talked about a lot, who I actually appears that the Rockies will finally move at this point, and then he listed a number of other guys who could play third base for the Yanks, Willie Castro. All of those Mets, I think at least one of them will be moved, but maybe for a pitcher, Mark Bientos, Brett Baty, Ronnie Mauricio, Luis Sanjalocunya, Jonathan India, Jon Mancatta from the Angels, and Luis Arius. So a long list of names. It sounds like they'll get one of them, Kratz.

Speaker 3: Yes, Passon's looking at it the way, the same way that we've looked at it and talked about it. Like, wait a minute, they got rid of this. Wait a minute. You're pumping these prospects up. They're creating what I would call stat cast darlings in the minor leagues, guys that throw a billion top of the zone heat. Even look at a guy like Drew Thorpe, he got traded. He was more of like a command guy. And obviously his injury that sucks. But they pumped him up. How's he going to do in the big leagues? To me, I think he might have a better chance because he's not a big VLO guy. He's more of a command guy. But everybody likes what they have in their minor league system. The Yankees create what the industry wants. It's not the Yankees' job to say, hey, we traded you this guy. Maybe you should continue to do this with him so he has success in the big leagues once you this is why you trade a prospect. You trade the prospect and then the other organization has to figure out how to make him a big leaguer. They have big league stuff, but maybe not necessarily a big leaguer.

Speaker 1: So I'll finish up here, Todd Father by looking at some other teams that could be in the mix aside from the Yankees, From the Reds, what about the Houston Astros. Bear with me, But it does appear, at least according to some people that are thrown reports out there, that essak Prades is going to miss a lot of time. It's a significant hamstring stream. And then even if he does come back, you can figure out bouncing him around. Do you think that the Astros could be in play for Gino Suarez.

Speaker 2: I do, I do. I think. You know, you think about the Astros, you know, they're not afraid to make change, They're not afraid to go after somebody. They are a team that always seems to find a way to be involved in one of the top teams in MLB, and I think doing so, they're going to have to get a couple of chips and get rid of a couple guys. So in an injury just happened again, we're talking about an excellent third basement, top one of the top third basements in baseball. You know, Nolan Arnato's definitely up there, you know, per defense and other metrics and whatever. But you're looking at one of the top third basement in baseball right now that any team would love. And if the Houston Astros got him, man, that's another step in the right direction for them of you know, taking even more control of that division and maybe even you know, winning more games to get them one of the top teams in baseball. So this will definitely be a piece that the Astros would definitely love and definitely help them along the way.

Speaker 3: Back in twenty eighteen, the talk was, hey, should we get Jacob de Grom for Brandon Woodriff and Corbyn Burns both guys that essentially made their debuts that year? Burns he made his debut. Would he made it you know, earlier in the the season before, but for a little bit like two rookies that ended up being elite number ones in their rotation, But for de Gram? Would we have won? Would we have won the NLCS had we gotten to Gram that year, had he stayed healthy. That's another that's another starter that could have gone out there and won us the one game that we needed. We didn't have a big time rotation, but we got to game seven. Would that have pushed us over? To me? The Brewers need to look at it and say, how have we gotten bounced the last few seasons from the playoffs? Is it? Do we need more offense? Holy crap? The Diamondbacks came in the one year and beat up on Big Wu Freddy Corbyn burns like they had. They have exactly what they have this year in a great rotation going in to me, an extra four or five million dollars for Aujenio Suarez could push this team over the top. Let's put it this way. He knows how to hit in the division, he knows how to hit in the central and there's some places that he has had career years as a road player. And you don't want the Reds to get this guy. Not saying the Reds are going to catch them in the division, but just to me, this is their chance for Mark Antanasio to dig into his wallet and spend the extra five million on a player that will change this lineup.

Speaker 1: It's a great call. Ken Rosenthal wrote about it this morning in his Notes column. Also, you want to prevent him from potentially going to the Chicago Cubs. I think the Cubs and the Tigers are the two other teams that we didn't talk about for them, and both they're possible. The Tigers have so much flexibility with their lineup that they would be able to pull that off. And remember they were going hard for Bregnant in the offseason. This would be a nice little replacement months later. And for the Cubs, I think they want more offense than what they've gotten from Matt Shaw so far this season, So that's two more. But here's my thing, this could be the c c Sabathia type impact. This could light up Milwai if they're able to do this. And lastly, to play to Kratz's point, Inosaurus wrote about what it takes in the playoffs and how you do need more slug in the playoffs and that could have been holding Milwaukee back for a long time now, he said, even with improvement in July, the Brewers entered Wednesday twenty third and slugging twenty fifth and hard hit rate and thirtieth in barrel percentage. Remember, you're facing better pitching in the playoffs. How do you match up against better pitching? And how often can you string rallies together? It is harder to do that. That's why you need Pop in that lineup. They do not have enough slug in my mind, and this would be the perfect answer. I'm with you. If there's one team that needs to go after him more than any other, in my mind, it's Milwaukee That've got the prospect capital to pull it off. If we're missing anyone. He says they might need another starter both Chris Bassett and Max Scherzer are not young, and they are potential free agents. Chris Bassett's thirty six mad Max is forty. He said they could wait until the offseason to address the possibility of them leaving. I mean, for me, guys watching the Blue Jays more frequently lately because they are very much in the thick of things, I think high leverage reliever would be number one on the list. Kratz, I think they could get away with the starting staff that they have right now. But convince me otherwise if you feel that way.

I read Ken's article and I'm like, a high leverage reliever essentially takes the value that you have in those What Ken was saying, older guys that may or may not like they may get tired part way through the postseason, whatever it is, they might falter down the stretch. It shortens some of these games. And when you don't have that high leverage reliever and I get it, we can say relief pitching for every team. So they're going to be in a bidding war, but they have a commanding lead right now in the in the American League East, so you have an opportunity to make a splash. To me, the splash will affect your team more, their team more at closer because their their staff is going to be held up also by that by that defense that is going to help them make, you know, make plays that you know what, maybe an ace doesn't need you to make because they're punching, punching more tickets. So to me, it's a high leverage reliever. I completely agree, Scott, And.

Speaker 1: If you want to do both Thodfather, that's okay too, But just trying to prioritize because it's difficult to get a lot of your work done around this time of year if there aren't many sellers. Are you on the same page. Got to get a high leverage bullpen guy that'll help you down the stretch. And you really need to be stacked with that circle of trust heading in to October.

Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, if you have a one or two starters that are in trouble, I mean, that's gonna be your priority. But we talked about this numerous times about how in the playoffs, for some reason they don't trust their starters. They only have four or five innings, So you're gonna need four or five innings of relief, and it's not always gonna be your closer. So you're gonna need a long guy. You're gonna need that guy that can come in and face three batters. So you gotta be very precise and really think about who exactly you want. And it doesn't have to be the biggest names. That's to be a guy that's reliable. Like we say relievers are reliable. Just a guy that comes in, throws strikes and can manipulate some batters. And I think that's the biggest key, yes, for sure.

Speaker 1: Now to be faracrats. If you read the piece from Ken a couple paragraphs, he multiple times mentions how reliever is a high priority. But he's just offering that maybe they do multiple things, and I'm certainly okay with that. The other thing to keep in mind is that after July thirty first, you can't really get anyone else. Max Schurzer has had a lot of Aylestons in the past few years. Eric lower looks really good. That could change. Doesn't have the track record of looking the way he does right now. I mean it could last or could not. Right Eric Fetti last year was one of the better pitchers in baseball. If you go off war He just got cut yesterday by the Cardinals. So do you think that adding a little depth it doesn't have to be a top end guy. I mean, sure, if they can go out and get a Mitch Keller to be in the middle of a rotation, that's awesome. But does it help for them to look into give me someone who's more of a depth piece, just to make sure that maybe he could be a swingman. And if a starter does go down, they're not doing the bullpen day crap. They've got a good five the rest of the way to prevent any injury risk.

Speaker 3: I mean, Eric Fetty just got DFA. Do they do they go pick up Eric Fetti just to like, like, are you looking for innings or are you looking to solidify the American League East? They don't score a lot of runs. To me, you have to be able to put a guy out there that's gonna be dominant. I don't think you need innings Zeters because part way through August alec Mano is going to be coming back, so they have guys that are coming back. I don't know where Yami Garcia is at. Obviously you don't want to like ooh, I hope I hope, I hope, yes, they need to add If you're asking me, what do they need more, it is that high leverage bullpen piece. It is that Emmanuel Classe, It is that Ryan Hellsley, which we're gonna be saying for so many teams right now, if you have a chance at Mitch Keller, and then it kind of hits on what Ken was saying, Hey, you know what, these guys are expiring contracts, they're getting older. Mitch Keller can solidify that for the next few years. I like when teams make those moves. But to me, what helps this team the best? I don't think they pride Mitch Keller away. I don't think the Blue Jays are playing in that in that realm. It's this closer role that they have an opportunity to solidify because there's a couple options out there.

I mean, that's part of why they've played a different brand of baseball. I'm with you, though, I mean I'm not opposed to an impact bat as well. I don't think that's going to be the priority.

Speaker 3: What did you just say? What did you just say earlier when we were talking about Hennel Suarez. What plays in the playoffs. You don't have slug, you don't win. The reason you don't win without slug is because game one, you're facing a team's number one, and then they're three highest relievers, they're three best relievers. You ain't getting the number four through seven in the bullpen. You ain't facing the third, fourth, and fifth starters. So game two you're then going again to the second best pitcher on that staff. And those dudes just don't give up slub. They don't let you manufacture things during the season. You can manufacture those things. I'm not gonna throw anybody's name under the bus, but if you if you go to every roster, there's pictures that you sit there and you go, we're gonna feast on this guy. We're gonna feast because he matches up well in this way. That is not what wins in the playoffs. You have to drive the baseball. The Blue Jays can drive the baseball, but you add another aircraft carrier to that, and that could be Anthony Santander. I don't know, but if you have a chance, you need to add slug and a shut down closer. And I'm saying closer. Hoffmail pribably still be a closer, but a shut down arm in the bullpen eliminates slug. That's what they do. That's why they're closing games.

And that's probably why the Reds are like, hey, we're on the outside looking in from a playoff position, but if Hunter Green comes back and looks like the cy young contender that he's been in the past couple of years, Lodolo's doing this and that rotation's got a lot of upside down the stretch. Obviously, Nick Martinez solid as hell. There's a lot there to think that, you know, this team might make a real run and could win a bunch of games in a rows. Are only as good as the next day starting pitcher, and they've got a lot of really talented ones.
