Giant Bombcast

We work out the kinks in Vinny's diabolical plan to clone the Beatles, talk Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning with Brad, reminisce about rap tapes, and generally spend way, way too much time discussing the Spike TV VGAs on this week's Bombcast!

Hey everyone, It's Tuesday, December the thirteenth, twenty eleven, and you
were listening to the Giant Bomb Cast. I'm Ryan Davis joined me today.
Mister Vinnie Caravella, what's up dog? Not much, it's just chilling great
Frank, mister Patrick Kleppick Damns doing good, feeling it. Mister Jeff Gerstman,
Hello, how's it going? That's going okay, fantastic. And mister
Brad Shoemaker greeting with your fancy ass alien headphones, those alien weiers. Tell
me about your headphones, your candy. Who are you wearing beats? These
beats were Jimmy shoe today, Jimmy shoes. They kind of looks like the
Bewers and Wilkins. Oh being w Yes, there's an amber stand in there.
Thank you. That means class means quality. Winds that the British and
they specialize in like recording equipment and made a fancy leather studio model. There's
a lot of fancy leather nothing. Man, this is News New Zealand.
It's it's lambskin. It's lambskin from somewhere. That's a fancy I say that
counts as a fancy leather. We're in the South Pacific Ish is lambskin lea
think it's New Zealand, so that the same thing. It's kind of like
any animal skinny hide, a leather comes leather. Think, I think it
has to go through a certain treatment, because I don't believe before you reach
a leather state bringing the wolf pelt up to the thing, I got leather.
That's all. Cracklands are not leather. According to the Inbox literature,
it tastes better beers and Wilkins equipment was used in their core ring of all
the Beatles albums huh so so listen it was really the only three of them,
is the only way it was ever meant to be one to one So
their mono headphone, their comfy yep, right, these are one to one
stereo album. They put out that when they redid all the Beatles songs put
on stereo, that was awful. There there is a paucity of actual seeing
the Beatles would have sucked if because they didn't do it was just like they
went in and just made mono songs stereo and it was all that's like drums
are over here and stuff like that. Right, you know, the early
stereo mix stuff and all that stuff is awful. That's why I was so
stoked for that, Like two thousand and nine, rerelease everything in mono,
yep, buy it again for the first time. Yeah, well you were
gonna anyway every time, did you did you? Did you dip again on
this on the two thousand and nine set, I was gonna buy it all
in rock band. That was like my plan was, yeah, but then
they didn't release. Then then the rockment didn't sell all. I'm waiting to
get my white album. That's all I wanted out of had. I've had
the Beatles album so many times now that I'm now just waiting for the next
big leap in technology where they're just I don't know, they can recreate genetically
the Beatles and have them reperform the songs like here's the newest album. This
is a genetically almost perfect recreation of how they would have played it. It's
the Beatles again. We programmed all their genetic information into a computer and that
produced these songs new Beatles. It's the Beatles literally, the Beatles album just
reproduced by literally the Beatles. Literally the Beatles literally, so it's actual Beatles
that but you gotta wait. You gotta wait until McCarty dies, right,
because you can't have any living Beatles around by Ringo doesn't count. He doesn't
count. Well, no, because once McCarty dies, then Ringo will sign
off on this bullshit idea and a heartbeat. True. He's like, well,
I don't know clones because nobody cares about Ringo. So he's gonna have
to generate some attention by making some controversial moves with the Beatles. First,
first you do it with the two of them, and then you do it
once one of them dies, you do it again. And then fully as
as you as you're peeling off the living Beatles, they're gonna produce that album,
genetic recreation album, like seven times. Anyway, That's what I'm waiting
for. Let's get on it all right. Bowers and Wilkins, Yeah,
they would, They would have the access to the genetic materials. Scrub it
out of the scrap it out of the headphones, you know, whatever other
gears around, mixing in with some mold. Yeah, and LC add some
add a velocar raptor some barb frog. You can put a couple of frogs
in that bed. The food processor whip that all up an out. Yeah,
put that into a ice tray. Is that new fridge peppers? That's
right, And then apples like, oh, we still can't get it.
Damn it. Crap, we don't have rights to that clone technology. Yeah,
do you care about how you're doing? Doing? All right? How
are you doing? I'm good? Crazy end of the year, I guess.
So here it comes barreling down the road. I can't it out of
the way it is. We've only got a couple of weeks left of steering
headlights being here. Games. We got it. So now now that all
the games are out, now we have to start thinking about all of the
games that came out and that we've played, and all the games that are
coming out over the next like eighteen months. Trying not to thine months.
I'm trying not to think about that. About the future, that's too far,
Like Command of Conquered Generals too, dude, you're just saying nonsense.
We're twenty thirteen game. What are you talking about? Thirteen pre order?
Now? There won't be out on Earth by then, so you don't need
to worry about Are you worried about not pre ordering it? Then maybe she's
just pre ordered. I'm not I'm not worried about dead. What are you
work downe by by Aware Earth, saying that in twenty thirteen everyone works in
by Aware all and out of part of a division. Now you will be
being made by by Aware video games. Old Republic was really successful. It
turns out you didn't know. But going to the future, it's crazy.
Everyone's got older public tattoos, World, bio World, the whole thing,
Arkham by a World, Yeah, okay, by a World presents zep Dialo
trees always. Then I'm in all right, do you want to build this
carrier? No? You failed the check, so you're building carrier man.
That's your job, right, kick the kick the harrier out of there.
I played Zelda? Did you play any games? I played Zelda Za?
Finally someone else. I played the Legend of Zelda, The Legend of Zelda.
The Skyward Sword z that the latest one, that's the most recent.
How could you tell? I don't know. Was it because you had to
go and hold you had to go and find your motion plus add on I
did. It was still on the week condom and I just plugged everything in.
There's all right, tell me about Skywoard Sword probably won't make any friends
on the internet this way. But you're not gonna make friends on the internet
talking about Zelda, really unless the thing say, this is the best,
A couple of chat rooms that approve you wrong, the a couple of bus
tickets I wouldn't have gotten otherwise. This, this is something. What you're
about to get into is something I couldn't get into because I'd be would have
been talking to myself. But now you understand, I'm just gonna talk to
I don't. I don't think it's as big a deal as you think it
is. It's so slow. It is the slowest goddamn opening of any game.
Does that take a while to get go? It was about an hour
forty five minutes in before I left the start on my adventure. And it's
so goddamn pedantic. It's so hey, don't hey, Link talk to me?
Okay? Holding down the Z button to talk to people's real cool,
right, D D D. Because Link doesn't talk, right, you should
hold down the Z button and talk to that guy over there, and you
can't skip dialogue or anything. Because holding down the Z button to talk to
people is the way I like to target people. I call it z targeting.
That's a weird name. You should go talk to the person over there
and ze target him as well. Did I say that already? Because I'm
crazy Joe, this guy who says everything twice. If you want to talk
to me again, just ze target me, all right, see you later.
Like that's and it's like like five minutes per conversation of like every like
it just should just be a thing. That's like I played Zelda before a
right played a video game, Like I know I know how this work,
Like it hand holds you for the first so I know how. Also,
there's unskippable thing or no, I don't know if it's unskipable. But there's
a movie about the Emotion Plus and how to attach the like if you don't
have the the one the one piece, the one zie about how to hook
the thing in and lock it and like this is a really long stupid video
sports Resort had stuff like that too, like they've I think all the Motion
plus games have that war It was a three minute video and it's a it's
a it's like video of a lady doing imserting and it's like and she's like
it and then you're like a minute and a half and you're like, Okay,
I get it, and they don't play that if you have the saw
that and then it's like a minute and a half in this remote plus Yes,
got it, and then they'll tell you how to take it off.
Yeah, and then those of your other minute and a half do you feel
like you learned something? I hadn't had it. I didn't have it locked,
so you know what. I was like, I should probably who cares?
So uh Anyway, once I got once, I took it like literally
an hour forty five minutes, an hour and a half just to get kind
of things moving. And I'm not saying that it's a bad game. Once
things did get moving, but gosh, it is really slow. And my
wife is sitting there watching me playing. She's like, who's this game for.
It's like a little complicated for kids, like little kids, like a
five year old, and it's just way too pedantic for like an adult to
be able to sit there and be like, I get it. I know
your cat's missing the cats over there. Just let me go get the cat.
I read faster than you're scrolling this stuff. Just please just spending it
a button to get past the text it's all atmosphere. Man, they're building
up. Somewhere in the middle. There's like a ten year old that is
just loving it perfect right on, Like they want to get that's who they
want, get that ten year old to get their their first timers and have
them hooked. I thought that ten year old was busy swearing at people in
the nextbox a lot. Maybe yeah. And I don't think they're playing all
the games. Maybe I'm just missing miss judging anyway, game's fine, it's
just so slow, just slow, Oh my gosh. I mean even even
the first dungeon isn't that great. It's not until you get to the second
area that the game really kind of picks up. And I know if it
should we perform a public service and post the save file for download that is
like right at where it actually starts, probably because yeah it is, because
that was my biggest word is twenty eleven, just the year the slow starts.
I feel like we've had a bunch of games where like Supmarto three Land,
Jeff, You're yeah, you felt like the first half of that game
is a real snooze for some of the same reasons. I mean, it's
not that it's slow. It's that it's it's really easy. You know.
It's like they're they're afraid to show you the real game. For like,
kind of the first half of Super Mario three Years Assassin's Creed Revelations like spends
a number of hours in many cases reintroducing gameplay mechanics that you just saw in
Brotherhood, right, but acting like everything's for the first time. Like when
it was slow in Brotherhood, that was acceptable, but Revelations was a little
should be nice if you can say, like, yes, I played a
Brotherhood. Yeah. Yeah. So the problem with that one is that they
they folded so much of the into the story of the storytelling, into these
mechanical elements. It's like, no, you have to meet this guy and
you know, be introduced to these factions before. I mean, does the
same thing with you know, i mean kind of the through the first act
and a half of that game, it's introducing new side stuff to you.
That's true, kind of one mission at a time, that's true. Oh
to mind if it did that. But this Zelda stuff is just like well
they're not even couching it in like missions or anything. It's just well you
just you look at shots of people looking at each other for too long.
And like I said, you can't skip through anything. You could skip the
text in that game. It would solve a lot of the early game basing
issues because a lot of what you're I understand having the gameplay mechanics introduced,
like they just want to guarantee that, and that's hard to make that an
option. But if you could skip the text, you would probably do that
that intro in half the time. Yeah, if you if you could just
you know, burn through the stuff, that's like, all right, you're
speed read it like you're not really telling me anything. It's not like you're
listening to voice acting or anything. So if you can, you're reading it
a lot faster than it's displaying it. So I'm just waiting for the text
that's all bolded blue, and that's when I know when to actually pay fucking
attention because those are terms that are going to be actually relevant to games.
Or if you could just like do like a lot of other games where like
scrolls faster as you hold the button down, you can do. You can't
scroll faster. It's just not fast at all. I thought I was just
imagining it. You can jamming on it. And be like, I think
it's going a little fast because a lot of those games I have like a
skip to, like yeah, filo, it just goes the next one.
Yeah, no, uh, a little too handholding. So yeah, then
I started enjoying it. And then the part that bummed me out the most
was I made it through like the pre first dungeon, which was really long.
Again, I was kind of slow, and they made it to the
first dungeon U and you know, I was doing my thing. I was
kind of whacking the thing back and forth and killing guys. And it's supposed
to be like where you hold the weed room road is where Link's gonna point
his sword and that whole thing. But I was like, I'm getting through
this pretty easily. And then I got up to the first boss and the
boss holds his hand up right, and you have to hit him in pretty
much like the opposite direction of where he's holding his hands. So if he's
holding his hand up high, he try to hit him high, he's gonna
grab your sword right. If he's holding it down to the left and tried
to him from down from the left, he's gonna grab your sword. You
know, he'll throw the sword dick, fuck your sword, and like you're
like, well that's and that's again a long animation, and you're like,
this is sword, rather not do this. So suddenly I was like,
okay, fine, But now I suddenly realized I guess I had been playing
the game all wrong because every time I was holding the sword too high and
went to go hold it down to start down and move up, he would
swing the sword down, so like in my motion of trying to lower the
sword down, dude, grab it and be like that. No, no,
I didn't want to hit you there. Suddenly I just I started hating
motion controls all over again, like at the point where they started asking me
for like real fidelity of the controls of like no, you need to swing
left to right and not upper left to right. I started hating life again,
and I was like, I just hate I think I just hate motion
controls. This should be the game that it's like, this is great,
these all work and no, sad, I finally got it. I died
three times on the first boss of Zelda Head. Maybe you paid more attention
for the hour and a half leading I also got a bug right in the
beginning where it kind of sucked where this is a gorn that's what they're called,
like the pack guys. He's getting attacked by a bunch of bandits and
I cleared out the bandits and then the gorn got stuck in a walk loop
animation where he couldn't make it over to me. He's just walking in place
and I had to reset the game. Weird. Yeah, that is unfortunate.
Yeah, I'm calling for I'm calling for a job. Uh send your
disking. But yeah, it's Zelda e. It's fun. It's parts of
it or fun again. This was This is My biggest fairy of this game
was the house. Though it starts, does not get you to why that
game is interesting until about five six hours in, and so it can put
you off really quickly. And I think that first boss is designed well in
the sense that it teaches you, hey, you need to be like you
said, you were wagging your way through, and it like that's not how
the rest of the game. It's like, no, this is what you
need to do. But it doesn't provide you with enough feedback on what you
did wrong enough to tell so that you can tell did the motion controls screw
up right? Because they're not perfect they're I think they're way better. They're
way more accurate, but it doesn't give you enough feedback on whether you screwed
up, or whether the games or whether the motion is not one to one,
and it's that timed combined with this little pasting, then I think I
was afraid it's going to put a lot of people off to the goods tough.
If you weren't there to tell me that it's going to pick up,
I just put it down probably and be like, this is pacing is terrible.
It picks up really well. Following that, the thing that I think
that the smartest thing they do is almost in every menu of us, every
screen besides the main gameplay screen, any menu, any aiming mode. If
you are pointing the WE mode at the screen, you can push down on
the deepad and it'll reregister that as you pointing at the center of the screen,
so it'll say, hey, do you feel like this is a little
bit off? Then like just push that and it's like okay, snaps it
back to the center. This is what I think the center is. That's
actually really helpful because you because you're always swinging it around, it's losing calibration.
So whenever you're the menu, which happens all the time, just bike
virtue of accessing items and checking things. Yeah, you can always be calibrating.
That's that's actually really nice because it's really fast and you just do it
and I do it all the time. Be really awesome if you weren't constantly
it was in calibration. Yeah, I was gonna says it's a good solution
to a problem that ideally shouldn't exist at all. Yeah, it's you know,
there's not a whole lot they could have done, you know. And
I'm also like shifting around on the couch positions and stuff. I'm not like,
I don't know if you're supposed to be standing to play that game or
what, but like I'm just doing wrist movements. I'm not like waving my
arm around. You know, you shouldn't. And so like I'm starting here
and then I'm slowly creeping over to the other side of the couch. I'm
like taking it to the bathroom with me because I have the strap on,
and like, you know, coming back from the bathroom and being like,
oh, you should go to the bathroom with the trap on, Well,
he's gonna make a mess. Yeah, for all involved. No one's going
on to use that either either thing. I guess pass and play. No
not in this case. It's yeah, some wet naps at the least,
at the least I don't bring them mention. And in that case, that's
not what P and P stands for. And P P P and then you
P, all right, that's your P and P. How we did it
in Long Island. I don't know what you guys do. That's different.
It's a different thing. Ponder rose out here. Nope, okay, what
else? What else you've been playing? Man? Uh? And that was
kind of suburbs still treating you well? Yeah? That saw Hugo? Yeah,
which I went to a roadside barbecue. Nice. Yeah, I'm still
doing it. Didn't give up. Yeah, paid fourteen dollars to go see
Hugo. Yeah, alright in three D. In three D. That movie
is pretty good. That was good. I did some other stuff. Took
the car out for a bit, drove around just cruising. Now, you
know, check it out high schools. You gotta log your hour of suburban
driving every day. Yeah, every day. You gotta us to come into
the bathroom with me. I got a remote and uh it should just be
surprised. No one does. Everybody does. No one does. But yeah,
that was pretty much a Patrick Kleff played all the way through Jurassic Park.
You played all the way through Jurassic Park the game war Path. Yeah,
that does have a single player story. Yeah, I think all the
dinosaurs are different endings too. Of course, Patrick in the in the Grand
Cannon of Jurassic Park video games. Where does Jurassic Park of the game stand.
Probably it's pretty high up there for not a lengthy history of really yeah,
not for that goes a whole glutton of I feel like the Jurassic Park
for the Genesis Last Sega CD was pretty good. Yeah, does it light
you play as a dinosaur? No that it's not the best. No you
ever you never, No that it's not the best. Well electro mechanical.
Come on, we gotta have a different category for that. I don't know.
Look for John Bombs twenty eleven Award for Best electro Mechanical. There's a
screen on that thing. Yeah, there's that little digital screen two X roars.
Uh. It's if it doesn't get better, does it get more complicated?
No, it's like that formula we saw in those first, that first
hour or so, I actually quite I'm Heavy Rain to have a lot of
issues, but I thought for what it was striving to do, I thought
it made so as as I thought I thought it made some is that the
closest analog absolutely it is. It is an interactive film. But for all
the issues that game had, like this, this one is like a really
bad Heavy Rain. Like none of the actions feel like you're you're you're you're
tied to them or are meaningful, like there are just random buttons on the
screen for them to be rant, Like you never feel like you're doing anything,
Like you never have any control of the character. Like at least every
Rain you're kind of walking around a little bit and interacting with things, and
the movement least made an attempt to make the movements tied to what you were
trying what you're doing on So if you're turning a valve, it's gonna be
some kind of rotation, yeah, and there's a little bit of that in
this, but it just like I really feel like it I don't even know
why I'm doing any of these things. And you also like rare la or
fail or die, like they're a very few fail scenarios, you're just kind
of bumbling through and like they have medals that you're getting there's just to try
and encourage you to to do better, but there are no there's no inventory.
The puzzles are so like just but I think is a good word for
this too, just like you just click things enough times and you have solved
the puzzle. And one like one of the things from what we saw was
very limited fail state, very limited fail state. Even the icons, like
the pistre version is so fucking awful, like frame rate, stuttering, audio
glitches all the time, Like we're not talking about a real process or intensive
video game, Like it's a Telltale interactive adventure game and it's just all over
the places not good either, like clearly fans, but like I'm not even
sure if like the way it comes across is like trying way too hard to
be referential, like just dropping and like hold onto your butts, but like
none of these characters have met that character and said in Jurassic Parks, so
like there's no reason for that. These are mercenaries are just hold on,
there's no causality, no no itch of just like remember when that guy said
yeah, yeah, yeah, there was like a bunch of someone wrote down
a bunch of one liners in important moments like well, I guess you gotta
hit these points. You gotta get a reference in here. It's no like
you like four four different references to the instances when the one kid is with
Timmy, right, Timmy, he's up on the fence, like several times
where they reference that just like you don't need you don't, you don't need
to hit that note again. I don't know that's I just put I played
on. What does it take place? Takes place? Uh directly after Jurassic
Park one? Uh so like directly after like Hammon that night Hammon has gotten
off the island. Wow. Uh, like those events have just happened.
Yeah, Like that that barber saw can that it falls out of his pocket,
like you you were basically like you were part of the team that was
going to intercept that and take it back to the mainland. And so you
kind of get caught up with other people trying to survive. You're multiple characters.
Yeah, you don't, you don't really You're not any one character.
And because they don't have any of the like characters you care about, like
they make trying to make all these like references to them, but it's just
you do you feel like they at least take advantage by not having you bound
to anyone character and by not having to worry about like inventory and stuff like
that. Do you feel like they take advantage of that as far as the
storytelling goes? Or No, No, I could just imagine, you know,
since you don't have to since nobody has to live through the whole thing,
could you have characters getting get acts. You don't have to tell me
specifically of character you get acts. But I'm using that as an example.
No, Like it's it's just it's just really poorly done, like in every
every fast like it fails. It fails as an action game, which is
what they were going for, like the heavy rain stuff. It fails as
a puzzle game. The puzzles aren't like the puzzles are like they kind of
like zeldare like so on the nose and like it's like you'll you're you're in
front of like a structure that has like all the different periods during the Cretaceous
era, and you come across a schedule that is like those Uh, it's
like a password to get into the next area, and it's got all them
laid out, but one's missing, so you just gotta go back to the
other area and just see which one you have to plug in hit circle,
and just the interface is so awful, Like you cannot I can't tell when
anything is on the screen. You're playing this on the P three, Yeah,
I hear the other versions are better. It feels like this will work
better as an iPad game maybe, but even still, like you, it's
still has no sense of I feel like I'm not doing anything when I'm pressing
buttons. Like it's just there are buttons there, just because oh god,
we needed oh god, we needed buttons here, not because like it was
particularly well thought out for what would make for meaningful interaction away for you to
interact with this. Yeah, like it's like we have yeah, Like they're
just the here are things for you to do, not necessarily because they correspond
all together well with and because of the performance problems, like it doesn't react
when you're hitting the buttons, and it's just a shame. It's a shame
that it's you know, the good stepping out of their comfort zone. It's
a good idea, like the idea behind it makes makes solid sense of like
using these sort of like different motions on the controller to allow them to do
something a little more than just around. It just did not did not hit
it. I don't know. I don't know what this team worked on prior,
Like I don't but it but make it makes me concerned about the other
things they're working on Walking Dead, the original thing they have. They have
King's Quests, different team, so I know, I just yeah, like
I would, I hope, I hope. It seems like there's it seems
like there's a lot of you know, shared technology, Like there's a pretty
narrow code base at least it appears from the outside of a Telltale games,
so like how much deviation they can do outside of what they are given by
other teams, And they can make an adventure game, and I'm worried about
them making a king s Quests game that's just you know, I mean Walking
Dead like you know, involve some action. So I mean I suppose if
they're going for a completely different route or if they have different ideas, but
if this is how they approach act and this is how their technology bakes in
doing action, yeah, I'll be curious to see what the reaction looks like
to the next couple of tell Tale projects. Yes, and I think the
next couple of Telltale they're weird. They're coming in a weird spot right now.
Like, I don't think episodic played out that well. Like it's hard
to get people to pie. That's why they make you buy all four upfront.
Like, you can't buy this episodically. It's broken up in episodes,
but a different sets of trophies. This is just drastic part of the game.
Yes, it just happens. You broke into four four parts that have
a cliffhanger to kind of give you each episode it's like two hours long.
I mean, you break it down. Part of the problem is that the
you know, the console manufacturers aren't really interested in in episodic stuff like PlayStation
a little bit more so than Xbox, but even I think a lot of
just how how it's it's it's a weird thing to dole out. Yeah,
because and if you're willing, like for the most part, I'm sure they
probably have the market data to back it up that if you're willing to pay
for the one, you're probably willing to pay for the four or the five.
Right, and if you're not willing to pay for more than the one,
like they just somehow needs some better way to schedule in like players,
you know, like I don't, I don't, I don't. There's not
a good solution in its problem except like buying it out front so that you
guarantee you get the money, because otherwise you can easily see out. Someone
buys two episodes and it's like, eh, right, I'm done, But
they still got to make them, right, like, yeah, I make
three and four because it's already in the Yeah, and no one's gonna start
at episode three, so it's you know, I imagine if you looked at
the sales, Dad, I'm add just shooting from the hip, but that
there's probably a pretty sharp decline after episode one, right, And so it's
to their advantage to bake that in early. But they need a better delivery
method, Like they haven't solved it on the PC either. So it's like
even if even if a consum manufacturers were more willing to go along like that
is that is something they could solve all on their end if they were finding
a better delivery mechanism. I just I don't know what that is. I
don't know if that's like scheduling it out. It's like, hey, every
every week at Tuesday at six pm, like the next episode unlocks and then
ever, let's all play together, like if you try and make it a
little more like TV works were kind of schedule it in. But it's I
feel like episodic stuff is better idea than as it plays out in practice.
Yeah, I don't. I don't really know what you do to make people
care. And it's and it's I think you write, you write better stuff
like that's you know, if if the game is of a high quality,
then they absolutely will care and want to play the next one and and go
from there. If you're kind of the thing is like on the like TV
where you know you like loss is a good example, like where you hit
like bad passion of a TV show like well, screw it. I you
know, I'm watching DVD. I just power through it. I just moved
on to the next one. I just sit in front. You know,
games are active, so you're actively more so than a TV Like you can
watch something else, you can read something, you can play the iPhone game
game while you're watching a shitty episode of a TV show. You you generally
like with the games, like well it's what am I gonna go on?
Game facts and like pupp walk through and just like through it. So I
know, the story beats going on to a third one, which here the
third episode's great, you know, I mean it's it's a hard problem to
solve and that and also just you know, there's the question of of you
know, market demand for the type of game that tell Tale makes, which
I feel I feel like, you know, like we were all pretty positive
about the episodic stuff with tell Tale early on, because it really did seem
like they had figured it out. But I think the thing, it sounds
like, the thing that has changed is that the quality of the new stuff
is not as good as the quality the old stuff, and the format is
maybe kind of play itself out a little bit, which I think the format
I think is part off. But also just you know, it seemed like
everyone was hopping on the episodic bandwagon and tell Tale was the one that seemed
like they had cracked it and they had the follow through at least they put
out all their episodes right. But then you just kind of realized, well,
there are these kind of hard limitations on episodic content, and you know,
these are the these are things that keep it from from really flourishing,
which is kind of why I think you've seen everyone kind of shrug their shoulders
and abandoned the episodic like that very specific. Also, the tell Tale stuff
feels kind of the same. Yeah, it's got sameness to it, like
there are better series than others, but I feel like when you've played one,
it's like, I don't. I feel like I feel like I could
skip the What's kind of like, yeah, am I in? It's it's
not even like at a certain point, it's not even about the license.
It's it's sort of like the well, am I in the mood for a
Telltale game right now? Like I know what I'm in for, Like it's
gonna be angry. I didn't play the third season. I barely even played
the second season of Samon Max. Yeah, yeah, it's certainly and that
stuff was fantastic, but it looked hilarious and yeah, but at a certain
point, like I've kind of had I've had it, thank you. I
think it right though. I Mean the game is good. The game is
good, Yeah, so make better games. Yeah, it's as easy as
that. Yeah, just you guys would just make better games, Uh,
would make better games. Walking Dead fits their formula really well. So I'm
but I feel like that, you know, Drastic Park I think was basically
in all respects a disaster, Like it's not a very good game, but
the dinosaurs got out pretty much Chaos Finds Away. Yeah, you know what
they didn't. They didn't use Life Finds a Way, which is the only
at the point that they were misusing the quotes so badly. I was actually
just waiting when you're like, come on, just like both of us,
Yeah, what is the real quote? Is it? And they add a
setup for it like when they started, like you know, they kind of
had a lot of the same beats, like that they that the characters and
dress Park want to go across like you know, finding eggs, and uh,
maybe you just chose the wrong dialogue option and that's why you did.
Not a lot of not a lot of really you can kind of explore all
of them. They're on a whole lot of like select one and then you've
missed a bunch of a bunch of dialogue. His Dress Park one, the
one where the t Rex finds its way on the boat too. Okay,
man, why did you have to bring that ups? Really forgot about that.
Someone was trying to make the argent with the dress park two is not
as bad as I remember it. I was just case him alone, no
specifically there, And I hated to I hate to agree with them, but
I tend to. I tend to be on that on that side of things.
About is you and drew out of the theater really? Yeah? I
think comparatively, of course it is. But like then, when they were
reminding me of various scenes toment, like the scene with the two t rex
Now it wasn't two t rexes, was it? Yeah? Two t rexes.
Yeah, when they're in the trailer park, Yeah, that seems that
seems all two t Rexes. I thought that stuff was fine. I thought
that like the RV sequence when they're hanging over the cliff, like that was
just tense and awesome. It was like it was a lengthy scene and you're
like it just they upstakes and upstakes and upstakes until it comes to this totally
ridiculous but still kind of awesome conclusion that even like the characters themselves can't believe,
like, wait, did that just happen? I thought that that part
was good. I mean, everyone will point to the gymnastics scene and that's
terrible, and I don't think it's it's defensible, but like that's not the
whole movie. I feel like the difference from me between one and two is
how they treated kids. Like in one, it was kind of like the
kids were like the avenue to like adults and kids like wonderment over dinosaurs.
Like that's kind of interesting storytelling technique. Okay, like we had the kids
that are amazed by dinosaurs, but look, the adults are amazed by dinosaurs
and the kids have maybe a little with the computer stuff. Was the lie
I feel into It was like kids are badass, Like kids are kids can
save your life. It's kind of a little little day of sex mockina just
or just like I mean a character development, like too much spy kids or
something. Sure, kids kind of scream and wet themselves and there on the
corner, Yeah, they're they're a little more of a liability in the first
one. Yeah, and then the second one they're like, you don't play
the adults are saving people's lives. Just do what you have to do.
Stay in the trailer. You know what stay in the trailer. Seriously,
don't don't come on the trip. Don't get that flashlight. So why'd you
come on the trip? Because now we're all gonna die because you came on
the trip. That's that's the part I see. That's short. I've learned
from action movies. When you don't stay a where the action hero tells you
to stay, you put everybody's life at danger. That's it. So saying
when Schwartz nigger says to stay here, stay here one time out of ten,
you're rights. He's locked up and they're gonna kill him, and you're
you might fumble into saving his life. As someone who just watched likely as
someone who just watched the last Action Hero. Yeah, that rule is is
very express expressively stated. So you make you make everybody's think. If the
action here tells you to say somewhere, don't immediately leave that location. What
if? What if Robert Patrick tells you to get out? You should probably
probably if someone says they want you to come with them, if you want
to live, depends the pens really, it really depends do what you're told.
Does he look like he's gonna kill you? I think he's lying.
I don't know. It's hard to say. Does he look overly trustworthy?
No, and then you're probably You're probably good. Does he look a lot
like guy who tried to murder you violently about ten years ago, Then you're
probably. Then you're probably fun. Then you're probably fine. Okay, it's
the guys that look too trustworthy that's like nope. Does he look like he
could run for political office at some point and actually win? No? Not.
Then you're fine. You're fine, You're fine. These are the rules.
You must follow the rules, Patrick, you play anything else. The
one last thing I'll say about you, please is that you do get to
There is one puzzle where you explore the computer system D and like, yeah,
that's that's pretty good. Like there's there's a real easy way to do
it, and then there's a trophy for like going real deep into the computer
system. Do you find any good files in there? I KNOWD files in
there? Can you play Zorc? I don't think so? Lame William black
Op that was in Black Ops. Yeah, Yeah, totally plays Zorc.
Yeah I finished Free Man. Oh really again? Gets I hear it gets
crazy to and is it like is it like mainline, like your primary objectives
get real fucked or no. Well, so what ends up happening is that
I can see like the size stuff because I came through so much like side
metals and such. At you. Yeah, I mean there is a point
in every platform where I find where for a long time, I tell myself,
I'm gonna get all this I'm getta get all this ship, but I'm
gonna get it. But no, and then, but then what happens is
that even though you tell yourself you've given up, like you, you still
want to, like you're like try like oh right, Like I wasn't even
I wasn't even trying on that run, and I kind of got close.
I'd probably do it. Let's see what happens if I actually focus on it
and try and collect all of the blue stars or whatever, and it gets
the actual main like game, But it does get the main rock gets more
difficult. But it's really the game is constantly tempting you to just like come
on, I know, I know, I know it was tough last time,
but come trying this thing on this level? Can I just got this
go around and and and every like like twenty lives that you die and I
guess the same area the games like, yeah, you want to just skip
this, No, no, no, and it doesn't like every like once
you said no, it will still do it again twenty lives from now,
which is just like it furiates me further. I'm like, I'm gonna keep
trying. You can die, real It's it's easy to die on one hit
in that game, okay, or it becomes easy to die on one in
that game. Because even when I've resolved that I'm not going to get all
these medals, you still want to try and get the medals even though you're
like, I'm not. I think I'm not gonna go back and do it.
I'm like, you still try on every level and this it's your own
fault, Like it's my own fault. Why I'm so pissed off, Like
it's like I know what I'm doing, but it's dangling right there. She's
saying that it wasn't it wasn't necessarily the like the main path like objectives that
were fucking you up. It was the stuff speaks, because I want to
get all the stuff in the platform and I just shouldn't, so Boston that
game. Still it's not all to be got, man, nope. I
do there with every platform where I start out thinking I'm gonna get everything,
and then it's about three fourths through when that just becomes like I'm really not
gonna play this. I start trying. Yeah, because you'll you'll come across
almost everything you need, just like as you're going through the main question.
Also, you haven't got you haven't played long. You have not played long
enough to get upset at the when that game replays the dialogue box for bugs
you've already picked up every single time. Oh no, so hey, so
when you when you're in an area and you come across a bug for the
first time us, it'll you know, it'll found this bug. But then
when you come back to that area and find that pick up that bug again,
it'll tell you again. And then you go to the menu and say,
like, you've already got twenty five of these, just making sure you
know again, I can't escape it all right, I don't even like the
net. It's hard to just flail it. Some things should just not be
motioned. Yeah, so that's all I play. Cool. Hey Joe,
all, Hi, so not much. How's track Mania too? It's really
good. That was the official Giant Bomb track Mini two servers. Giant Bomb
Official Classic is a huge server. It is blown nuts. Say it is
in the top three every day. At some point it is to three the
world. Wow. Yeah, so when you start, at some point it
is number one in the world. Still when you number one in the world,
when you when you start getting like access to super secret shit like you
we know you're a big player in the track mania community. What happens is
I guess this, this is what happened with some of their past games.
Is in some cases they have allowed you to spend the end game currency to
buy the next game. Yeah, so that would be there. That would
be it would be then when when shoot media comes out, I might be
able to buy it. In planets, I have over one hundred thousand planets,
I have your server. Yeah, yeah, because I have an official
uh like a rate a ranking server, which means I give I gave them
a deposit of planets. Forgot about this? Yeah, did you pay down
your your your planets like you're lean on your planets. I've made back,
uh, you know, like tenfold deposits. When you get a deposit back
when I turn off the ranking bit, when I when I decide to make
it just a regular unranked server. It comes. I get those planets back,
come check, make sure the servers clean. You didn't break any windows
or anything like that. You get carpet steam clean. Yeah, okay,
they're like okay, because I mean there's a little mold here about, like
whatever. You get most of your deposit back. Yeah, okay, that's
crazy. I don't know. I don't know, I don't know. I
added some more music. I added some more tracks. We should we should
do another TNT with that game. At some point, I think we should
just start doing track Mania only podcast that we just upload to your track Mania
server to only play when you hit a certain track onlyybe six minutes long.
That's okay, I got enough to say, Okay, all ex minutes.
That's well. We'll look into that then. Okay, hidden you want to
know what's our game of the year? Got fine? How many tracks are
on your server? Ninety five some? I mean at one point it was
over one hundred. I've been cutting it back because I'm getting bored to some
of the tracks, and you know whatever, got gotta keep afresh. As
a server administrator, I have to provide it continually work to provide a world
class track Mania server experience. That means adding hot new dub StEB nice and
when when new music. The whole time, I've been sitting here trying to
figure out a few minute tracks that you drive on, your tracks that you
listen to, I mean both tracks. Still. Yeah, there are thirty
plus songs on the server. Okay, if that If that helps you anyway,
Yeah, track Mania is still track Mania, then that's great. Uh.
I bought push mo saw for three DS where I was going to tell
that do you t mobile phone saw? Somebody saying we should get that push
mo. It's available now on the three DS shop push moo blocks, but
actually you do more, way more pulling than pushing. In Europe it's called
pull blocks and that's a way better name or a way more accurate from those
are both kind of shitty names, pull blocks and push mo push mo.
Just I don't like push I don't know bad. I don't like to push.
You're wrong. You're wrong for liking Pushmo. So I feel like over
the last week, and maybe not on this podcast, maybe just around the
office, we've been talking about how dumb QR codes are. But let me
tell you push mo. It works. Yeah, you can create your own
levels in it and uh and spit them out as basically a QR code style
thing and read them in I just let me tell you what it is.
Yeah, I was gonna say, the QR codes just aren't implemented poorly.
Yeah they're dune, They're just haven't figured it out. Yeah, that's it's
I don't need. It's faster for you to tell me that you are all
to a website for me to type that in right than it is for me
to take a picture of your stupid block. But I was thinking if they
had QR codes on your credit card, I could buy stuff on my iPad
a lot easier, like if I were just like going on the site.
And then it's like any of your credit card information and I'm just like,
why don't I just take a picture of this QR codes you as any kind
of security risk, nopell. Then you're part of the problem what he's talking
about talking about people with X ray eyes taking pictures of the QR code once
in your pocket. All right, then you're right, Yeah, tell me
all about push mo. So Catherine block climbing puzzle, We're not starting off
well, Uh, yeah, I know, uh it is it is not
you basically, so it's a it's almost like a two D image that you
are climbing. So a lot of the levels people are making are like,
it's Mario, it's two D Mario, like they're making pixel art. What
you're saying, No, that it's just Mario. It's not even one one,
But not all the levels are like that. Basically, it's it's a
series of blocks that are grouped together by color. So if you grab,
uh, let's say it's a three by three square and the full bottom row
and up from there it's all brown, and then the other block is green
or something, and you grab the brown bit, all the brown bits touching
it will pull out as one. And you pull these things out up to
three layers and then jump on top of them and then pull out the other
stuff. So basically you're kind of working your way up to the top.
Is the is The goal is to climb to the top of this thing.
And you know, depending on how complicated the the level is, that'll be
either really easy or really difficult. I mean, obviously it starts out pretty
easy, where you're just like pulling out things to make stairs and and kind
of going from there. But as people have made Mario and Pedal Baar and
all this other stuff, you know, those get a little tricky, you
know, to trickier to deal with. So it's three D. He's pretty
good. And then, yeah, the three D looks nice because you're pulling
him towards the screen, so you're you're pulling up to three levels levels toward
the screen and then kind of jumping in to some of these areas and running
into the back, grabbing other blocks and pulling them out too. So it's
it's helpful, it's it's the three d's useful because you can easily see,
you know, which plane everything is on at all times, so you can
like spin the camera around. No, you don't really need to, okay,
but it's pretty clear when you're pulling. The three D helps with that
because it just gives you a little extra Yeah, little little deception. Well
death, Yeah, it's made by intelligence systems. Yeah, this plains why
it's good. What right, Yeah, Yeah, it's a nice scam.
People have been waiting, like this just came out in a panel a while
ago. Is that what till I was talking about on Twitter? Probably last
week? This come out last week. I came out on the yeah,
came out on the yes I say that. I was like, Danny,
I'm jealous he gets to play that. That's out. How you can play
it now? You can play it for it's seven bucks or whatever it is.
It seems pretty cool. It's it is like a lot of that kind
of block climbing e puzzle stuff that you know, as soon as I started
having any kind of Catherine flashbacks, I was like, I don't know that
I want to play this anymore. And then I scanned in someone's Mario level
of picture of Mario level and then when this is way harder than the beginner
ass levels that I'm on, and uh, kind of stop playing at that.
So where do you go to like a website that has a QR code.
I mean it's just the game will spit out images to your picture role
I guess of your level, okay, and then you can post them on
the internet anywhere. So you know, if you go to our boards,
I mean I think our our push moo page has the Mario image on it,
and uh yeah, it's it's well made and it's on the shops.
You know, it's good basically, So it's uh, it's pretty exciting.
Hey, you can save your credit card information? Yeah right, yeah,
did it save your information? I already had just above seven dollars in my
shop account, so I just spent that and now I have four cents that
against it there forever not a crew you shit, yeah, or an interest
on the shop. It'd be nice. There's no way to bring what are
they called before, like D side, No, it's completely separated the points.
No, no, because there's no those are just those are just locked
up in my dside all of a valid you can spell. You could spend
them all there on dsiwear and then transfer it. I guess, you know.
So there's you know, it's not totally gone. Assumingly, they will
hopefully not be a problem anymore with any forward systems. Yeah, I imagine.
Yeah, if the WU doesn't use these same points, that would be
weird, and in fact, to like play a good deal of these games,
then they will be lost. It would be cool if you will be
lost if you would beam those games to the screen. Yea, you know,
the three D is good enough that it wouldn't probably look that bad blown
up a little bit. Yeah, and you're you have a touch screen in
your hand, so theoretically it's and it's the same and unless they change between
now and when to release, it's the same one touch capacity. Yeah screen,
it's basically the same screen. It's blown upright, so so they could
they could get away with that, So that seems well made. I didn't
spend a ton of time with is available? Go they go to go to
the shop, which I know you're probably checking it every weekend away and uh,
and go watch that. They put up video of it. You can
exactly what it is, and it's useful. The video that they have up
there explains a lot better than than I probably just did. What about the
latest House MD episode how Somebody episode five? I did not buy it,
but it does look really interesting. How much you've loved the rest of the
House games? Yeah? I mean or the House game? I love House
Yeah. House music yeah yeah, not the show though. He's like he's
just like he's like medical house music, yeah, medical house just house music
that that samples like medical noises like yeah, k machine, sound of e
K G Machine, sound of a shock pads, yeah, medical dubstep warming
up yea heartbeat, heartbeat, mid step, heart step, Oh god,
dark Wing, Dubstep Dark House, Dark House, Dark Wing, dub steps,
step by steps, stub step, step by step step. I'm on
board with this. This, These are all great ideas. Was this part
of your looking for nineties teachers? Did? Uh? Was it? Hey?
Dope step? Yeah? That one was pretty good. Hey dude,
they were better ones. There were the rug A rug Rats. Nothing better
than the rug Rats one that I've seen as far as the actual quality of
the dub step just because I didn't listen step, I didn't, I didn't
listen to have heavy drops terrifying. Okay, I actually heard the rug Rats
one, and yeah, it does what you want the dub steps song to
do, which is play about three notes of the actual thing and then just
go to blah. It's not even a remix at that point, it's just
no, no, it's yeah. It's the yeah. The laziest dub step
is arguably the best dub step. Yeah like, because there's times when you
can be like they actually tried to make like the like tried to recreate the
melody of this song in all of their crazy webs. It doesn't work great,
but they tried, and there were the song was like this guy just
a track and said, I'm gonna go start YouTube real quick for some clip,
Uncle Joey exactly. How that Ridge Racer mini games coming out? Yeah
for for for Vita gonna be they haven't Ridge Racers launch title. Yeah,
imagine gonna be if if it's gonna be available, it'll have it'll be on
that disc or get access to our Yeah. Sure that wasn't That wasn't all.
That was pretty great. That was that was great. Forget about reason
and your your dub step plugins. Just want Ridge Racer. Is there gonna
be a lot of dub step in This year's Game of the Year features heaviest
heaviest drops, it being twenty eleven was the year for dub step that twenty
ten. Yeah, I don't know year everything. Yeah, we've just gotten
to the point where even like just now it's it's it's made its way into
commercials and stuff like it. It's all it's it's not gonna last much long.
No, no, that's what you need to burn it out. Yeah,
everything just be done. And twenty twelve is something like how you stick
folk music and then someone just goes wow blah blah wow wow over it,
like all of the packaging for the for the v GAS seemed like it was
all at least Yeah, I don't know what else, man, I played
some other games. You watched the vas Yeah, I did. And I
played sky rim On the PC. Fair amount got going on that should make
a new character? I did? Yeah, Yeah, I made a a
Nord. It still had that patch to come out. I haven't gone back
to it. Yeah. Played some Joe Danger for three sixty, which is
uh yeah, roughly the same out this week. Yeah, but it's they've
added some it's a special edition. It is a special edition that they've added
some stuff, like they've added actual online play, which it did not happen.
Did Yeah, I think the Are you sure? No, I don't.
I don't think they did that. It's there, there's I know there
is an Xbox Live option, levels back and forth, but I don't.
When I saw you playing it, there's a thing that said on the dashboard
that says you were looking for people to join your Joe Danger Party, I
said, well, that's just sounds like Jeff. I don't know, so
he's hanging around Danger Party. So it seems I mean, it's not a
full on sequel. Yeah, definitely. It definitely seems like there's a lot
of the same content. It's it's the same levels. They've added a new
laboratory section and yeah, that's some new stuff there. And it looks like
it doesn't have the ability to put content on a USB stick and upload it
into the game, which PS three had, which wouldn't surprise me. That
sounds like something Microsoft would be like, Oh no, man, no,
come on, no, no, no, no, no, You're lucky
to let you send levels to other players. I'm glad that happened. If
I got your level and then I sent it back to you, Yeah,
I got your level back and then we got all those points. Yeah that
was pretty good. Did you mean it just be at my level? I'd
ever touched your level. All he did was send you your level back to
get the points, and then it's the end of my Now, I'm not
gonna I'm not even gonna why bother? I got the points. It's pretty
good. Moving on. I had a lot of so it was a hard
jump, it was what's one hard jump? And then the finish line.
I like Joe Danger. Yeah, even if they didn't do anything to it,
if you didn't play Joe Danger before, which said, since it was
only on PSN, I totally understand why people would not have played Joe Danger
before. But now Joe Dainger's out on expect not only as many people have.
Yeah, sure, fine, yes, not as me if people buy
shit on PSNA, this is the sequel on both or just on PSN.
No, this is just three sixty and this is not a sequel. I
I don't know that they've said one way or another, but I would assume
it would be all over the place at this point. Get Joe Danger,
Yeah, I play some Terraria ter Area one point one one is out.
Yeah, what's we talked a little bit about the one one. Yeah,
last week we've been kind of getting into that. There's a drill that I
hadn't seen before, Adamantium drill that just fucking plows through stuff. So if
you want to cut through things, you should definitely be looking to try to
build one of those, or just use the character editor to give yourself one.
Download the character editor. It's ridiculous if you if you don't care about
actually crafting any of the things in that game the right way, you can
just go get them. Go get them, go click a button and I
pre ordered Star Wars the Old Republic this morning because one of us needs to
own a copy so we can put up some videos of it, and we
need to pre own it. None of you slack asses. We're going to
do it. Yeah, yeah, it's for the standard. I got the
digital Deluxe Edition because it came with a flare gun. Yeah no, no,
no, that's the physical Collector's edition that comes with all that stuff.
And then like three and three more things or something they sold out of some
online, some digital versions, yeah as well. I don't think they did
well. I don't know they were there. There's pre orders for back have
been weird because they were limiting them for a while and trying to make it
look scarce. And then there was the one where like people ordered and then
they're not going to get their actual copy until like January something. They're physical
people who order the physical Collector's edition are not getting their stuff until like January.
That's yeah, bad news. Remember there's some other thing too. I
my big mischaracterizing, but basically, like there was also a problem with like
if you were getting the physical copy early, like if you really get a
copy of it early, like you won't be able to even though the game
will be live in other territories, like, for example, if you're in
North America, get it early. It's not live North America yet, but
it's live in Europe. Like, you won't be able to play, You'll
just be sitting with this disc while all their players are playing. Well,
they flip a switch. So they're having the pre like early game access starts
today as of thirteen. And that's the thing they're rolling people into. It's
the language. It was unclear because they put out a press release last week
that said if you if you order now, you will be able to play
on the thirteenth. I thought, well, okay, that that seems pretty
clear that order now and I'll still get in on the first day of early
game access. But a lot of the other stuff that they have put up
about it says like we're going to be sending out codes on a first in,
first out sort of basis, so you will get up to seven days
of early game access. And and so i'm I'm I just registered my code
on Monday morning, and we'll see if I get one on to today.
It's really hard to keep these states in line when the official okay next week
officially yeah, next week officially that all that game will open up, and
and yeah, we'll run some videos of it. That's that I Star Wars.
I bought that so we could do that. Yeah, I'm not convinced
that we'll be Yeah, month three. Yeah, eighty b eighty bucks for
the the flare gun for the flare gun and a STAP which sounds like it's
amount of some kind. It's like a one man vehicle floating platform thing which
from my time, which from my time of the beta running around that starting
zone as the Jedi fucking forever. So hopefully he'll be able to move a
little faster. Uh, get their stap, Stay Stap, you're Scott Stap.
Yeah, Scott Stapp. Let's starting Jesus and rocking shirtlessness. That's I
said, Jesus So yeah chest hair yeah uh yeah, so fringers crossed.
Let's start the door. I just want to make sure that you know it
will bring in by Thursday, so when Galaxies goes off, we have a
place to go. Yeah, go there directly. Yeah, our our Galaxies.
That's that's the only reason I spent that money. Our Thursday Galaxy is
closing event. It's going to be something special. So you always need a
canteen, you know it to be chancing it exactly. That's yeah, the
name of the event. No, I already have a character in there as
the end of Star Wars Galaxies, and then I rewrote the deck this morning
to say Star Wars Galaxies is about to become more powerful than you could possibly
imagine. Okay, now we're getting there. And that's the extent of my
Star Wars knowledge. So if you want anything else like that, it's gonna
be like Wookie times walk this way, there you go, and you're writing
these down right, I don't know how you can forget those, Luke Skywalker
with two wise welcome to the fuck shop. Eventually, eventually it just becomes
two live crew quotes. So and no one want, No one benefits from
that crew. They don't even get anything out of it. And it's not
like Jeff's as Cap or something. He's not you cap the local for ass
cap. That's the way. Yeah. See, I don't I don't think
they get we don't. We don't. We don't give me Jeff cents Uncle
Luke, here you go, ninety three cents. Thanks for everything. XO
XO. I wish that your your mayoral race had gone a little better.
Did he not win? He's not the mayor, He's not the mayor of
Miami. He'll always be the mayor of Miami as far as I'm concerned,
but not the official official. He'll always be the mayor of Miami. Words
Fresh Kid Ice sergeant at arms because there's other arms in that casts that arms
always fucked up. His arms so screwed up. It would be like if
there's a new new, new, new two Live crew, Fresh Kid Ice
comes back with just sucking one arms that wants to stop. It's a cyborg
arm. A new new two Live crews got laser eyes. Would be like
the twenty twenty you'll have crew Brother Marquis just shooting I beams out. It's
just a gas clo. Girls butts making them bigger, yeah, butt enlargening
eye laser technology. And then verb is there too. They you know,
sure he was part of the new two Live crew and doesn't really count,
but hey, he wasn't even blame him. He wasn't doing anything. If
someone came to you and said, we need new people for the two Live
crew, you'd be like, dude, let's go in. I'll be in
the Two Live Crew. Yeah you will, I'll be in you and me.
We're starting two point zero Live Crew and can't be on that all right,
I'm backing out on Facebook, Patrick Patrick and being my my web only
two Live Crew reimagining. It's a Tumbler blog, right, Yeah, that's
the only place that we publish our music. It's just a big parental advisory
sticker. Well, we only and we only publish them as matchups. So
there are original tracks, but they're too You're the man now dog. We
use that for like the beat. Yeah, that's like our standard. So
we do that and dub step Tumbler Tumbler blog. That's it, doubler.
That's all I got. Yeah, yeah, je if you playnything else?
What what? Sorry, I'm thinking two Crew. Sorry, let's let's imagine
you're the best two Live Crew video game. Like, what kind of game
would a good two Love Crew game be? I think it would be Saints
Row the Third, but not as funny, okay, kind of tragic and
sad that's always yeah. Yeah, so the worst version of a game that
already exists. Yeah, so it probably shouldn't make a two Love Crew video.
I don't think they should make a Two Live Crew video game, okay,
because even if under your your like dream scenario, it's still kind of
a shitty version of an existing game. That's yeah. Either that or it's
an eight bit side scroller, because that's any time you turn anything into a
dumb video you can get away with that. People just go like, I
don't know, it's a bit side scroller. What would they shoot like eight
bit versions of Two Live Crew songs? I know, whatever does sound way
better than actual two Love Creui songs, So I don't know. Yeah,
problem the bass wouldn't hit as hardst that Miami bass sound is what you'd be
missing there. And I don't think you know, like eight bit it can
hit pretty hard. Songs are pretty bad, but the bass hits pretty hard.
But the problem is that nothing else does. So if you don't have
really great bass, all of their songs sound terrible. Yeah, I mean
it's it's all low end. It's as a real good mid range, no
mid range freshet ices, voice counts as trouble, I guess, yeah,
and all and all of the rest of the drum hits are just super tinny.
Yeah, it's been compressed into oblivion. You know mister Mix did not
get formal studio training. I'm gonna guess let's say, you know, they
had not a mastering Wizards. They had their priorities and I get it.
The pack Jam Team, Disco bread Shoemaker. What's going on talking about the
podcast? Was the first time you got exposed to Two Live Crew mid nineties?
Yeah, I guess limited exposure. Yeah, aware aware of its first
time. It was the it was the first hardcore rap tape you ever heard,
I don't. Jeff and I were talking about this recently in the car,
remember, and I remember, like the first NWA tape that I had
in my house, I felt like I had drugs on me. I felt
like like if my parents ever found this, be the fucking end of everything.
That big sticker was crazy. Was like a bootleg tape too, But
it was just like I would have nightmares about my parents accidentally putting this tape
in and playing it and you're going, oh, no, no one could
hear this. Hard to think of Two Live Crew. I'm like, I'm
like, I'm like eleven and I shouldn't have this. It was a hard
core on the same way that NWA. Yeah, that's some hardcore rap.
Two Live Crew and two Short was just like whoa, because I mean it
was. It was the difference between rapping about killing people and the and rapping
about fucking or Booty's right, but you're right, it was. They were
basically like a novelty act that they cursed a lot, and that was the
novelty, right, But there was I guess there was still in their own
lives kind of hardcore Crew continued in the grand traditions of things like Blowfly and
Rudy Ray Moore. Sure, sure, so you know they're making party records.
Yeah, party records right. NWA was just making music to kill people
too, Yeah, they had that was Yeah. When I was when I
was in the eighth grade and got a hold of U easy tape, that
was it. They were angry. It was over. That was the only
music I ever wanted to hear. Ever again, like yep, if it's
not important as this is, then forget it. It's like, yes,
give me those two short tapes as well. Let's just keep it all this
stuff, Yes, iced Tea's power, let's yes, stack them up,
take these Fresh Prince tapes and we can put them away. But that part
of my life. But that part is over. This quame album is fun,
but we don't need it any We don't need it anything. We found
something new, We found something new over here. This is I don't like
cops, mom, Dad, Really, I don't have that much of an
opinion about cops. It's really dislike cops. Eighth grader, It's got a
real thing. It's cops. So true. It was it was probably for
Chronic, I guess to answer your question, it was like it was it
was like second generation though. Yeah, but yeah, it was like by
the time I got to the Chronic, it was it was like, yeah,
like everyone has a copy of it. Yeah, it was. That's
I'm not, you know, gonna disrespect the Chronic. That's still amazing album.
But it was not I feel like you're removing more towards him the edge.
Yeah, yeah, it was. It was. It did not seem
as just like straight up dangerous to have wed had come in and ruined it
everything, you know, it really did. Like that last that last NWA
record that Dre made for him was like the angriest, craziest, like paranoid,
paranoid, schizophrenic, just just like bananas. Like he was in a
bad, bad fucking place and it made for an amazing record and then said,
hey, chill the fuck out. It definitely gotta got something for you.
A lot less people just yelling at you, like just put it in
a tape and it's just it'll be thirty five forty minutes of people just yelling
at you about their ship that's going on, their mom is terrible, like
fucking that guy. And then like it started getting into more about like,
yeah, you know street jams, like music, barbecue music, right,
they can kind of put this on with somebody else in the room. We
always like, no, no one else can hear this while I'm hearing this.
I mean me and my dad would drive around and listen to n Wave
and Paula Close one year off, close enough, good enough for government work.
I had that experience with User Illusion two that was it for me where
my dad heard it and was just like, yep, you're not listening to
those Is that the one that had get in the ring on? It was
fat as we stopped at the gas station and I was like, oh man,
I'm gonna put this in while he's in the store. If he came
back and got in the car right in the middle of getting the ring nice
break down, he took it out and he was like, all right,
that's it up. It's not yours anymore. And then I got it on
CD. I always knew that the things that I was listening to were not
to be shared. I had my head, my mom, I think,
write me a note to the record stores saying, please sell this album to
my son to go buy rap tapes with dirty lyrics on him. Rap tapes.
To be fair, they re CDs. Dude wrap tapes were the best,
the stuff that you could only get on tape, yes, because it
was like local Bay area rap that did not deserve to be on a CD.
So it was just like is in the case at Watt's Music and you're
just like, yeah, I want this guy because it's got the guy has
a gun on the cover, and the guy yeah ill manner posse. That's
when it comes in five the important important local acts. What were we talking
about? Terry is all right talking about two Live Crew, the game,
Brad's pitch for it, Brady playing a video games played about seven hours do
to two on Sunday. Oh really sounds in deep already. What's up?
What's up? What are you doing that game's up. I'm not ready to
talk about it. You're not ready to talk about two yet. So I
spectated a dot to two match for about five minutes and couldn't I didn't know
what was going on. Yeah, so like, do they need to get
to the buildings? Yes, to get to the other team's buildings and kill
them. So it's like an RTS. Not really, I couldn't figure out
what was happening, only that anytime it died, the the the message of
a player dying was not something I wanted made me want to not want to
play the game ever. Again, I don't think I wanted to start a
conversation about two yet. I'm just saying, just just know the it's begun,
okay, just saying that it was. It's the real learning experience started.
Yeah, okay, is it? Is it a game you think you
could play? What did I just say? I just get ready to start
talking about it, all right, I don't know, we'll see. I
don't know. It's it's a huge fucking commitment. I can tell you that.
Yeah, I don't think it. I think I think I'm gonna have
to wait for it to be out of beta because they like learn it button
is great out right now, so until they can get that in there,
there's I clicked the on Sunday. There's some stuff there unit pictures though,
it's it's see what all the units do? But I need the what the
fuck it? What am I supposed to do in this video game? It's
some sort of TiAl that says like, yeah, exactly. It's like some
unskippable text that says like listen, listen just I will say just as a
game that's ready for public consumption, it's not ready for public consumption. It
is really agree in a lot of ways. I don't know what it was.
What's what's your what's your prior experience? I played the mobile, I
played a little bit of DODA and Warcraft three okay back but like three years
ago, sure something. I played like two or three matches of Legal Legends.
Yeah, that's about it. Okay, So no Demigod, No,
that's right, I did. I reviewed Demigod, but it's that game was
divergent enough that it's not quite the same thing. I think that game shipped
with like six maps anything as other maps, and they're really like I want
to say, like ten heroes in the whole game, get right the fun
out of here with different maps, DODA two is gonna have like over one
hundred heroes by the time it's hold on. It sounds about right. Well.
Legal Legends is some crazy numbers way up there too, Okay, Okay,
is there a Is there a play versus Cpu option? You basically just
have to make a custom match and tell it to fill with bots. Okay.
So it's like I said, it's a lot of that infrastructure stuff is
just not there yet, but it is possible because that was that was always
the thing, all right, maybe I'll try that. In fact, some
of the guys I was playing with said to just enable sheets when you start
that match and just like max level your guy and give yourself a shitload of
gold and just start playing around, like learn how the abilities work. And
that's not that kind of stuff. But it went pretty well. I had
some pretty tolerant people helping me out. So I'm still curious if they'll end
up doing When they first announced that project, where like you could sun like
they were going like the big thing was gonna be They're gonna be like a
mentorship, which I feel like that game probably unofficially, I have TF two
has something pretty similar to that that'll be there. That'll definitely be there based
on the TF two stuff for sure, which works well. It's smart and
and well done and it you know, they incentivize people going in there and
and actually showing you what the hell. Yeah, these games are actually all
about and I feel like even more so than I mean t t F two
has a lot of very specific even amongst at least that is like a shooter
or something, even amongst like class based class based first person shooters, there
are certain nuances about the way the systems work that having someone there to kind
of hand hold you through it could be useful. And Doda just several times
over that indeed. Right, well, i'll eat cool your jets on talking
about Doda. Yeah, Kingdom, those of on the Lure Reckoning you played
that last week for a couple hours? Talk about that? Yeah, about
two hours? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Where did it where in the
game? It was like two storms of the way end of the game,
which seems like kind of a weird place. When I played it, I
created a character from there, so I guess I'm glad I played a later
Yeah, like a later build they actually had, so they're correct me if
I'm wrong. There were no classes, correct, right, Yeah, okay,
so the four saves all at the same point. This, so this
was cool. The all four saves were at the same point in the story.
Okay, so you could pick up at the exact same place with all
these different types. Yeah, Like on the save slots they had names like
Warrior and Ranger. Yeah, and I think Sage and stuff like that.
So so like those are defined based on like choices you make right later your
character build, right more or less. I mean, so how the system
works is you've got skill tree stuff with I believe it's three different schools like
your warrior it was stealth. It's like face Warrior, Thief and Magic,
finst Sorcery And might think the names, but you know, you know what
that means, Magica Stampna. And you can spec any way you want at
any time with those points, and as you spend certain points in each category,
you will unlock different fates that you can then equip at a fate weaver,
which is just dude in the world, and you will potentially have numerous
different fates at your disposal at a given time, and you just equip one
to boost your stats in a specific way coming from the fates have names,
so if you spec all in might uh, then you're going to get warrior
type fates that then enhance your ability to play as that type of character.
And if you play as you know, so you can kind of create your
battle mages that way, and there will be fates that you unlock the equip
and basically give you bonuses to help make that type of character more vile.
Wait, are those fates are destinies? Sorry, destinies? You're right there,
there's whists of fate the destinies. That's I have the term wrong.
Yeah, there's a lot in there. I mean, that's the point is
that it's like a pretty complex character. You to go to Fate Weaver to
equip your destinies, and you can swap them out at any time. So
the Destiny is Brad when we're doing the when we're taking a look at it,
which is up on the side now if you want to look at it.
That's the thing where it's like you unlocked a new Destiny card, but
you need sixteen points in magics and thirty two to even equip this. Okay,
so there will be some that you unlock by getting ten points in each,
So if you want to play that kind of jack of all trades type
of role, they will give you boosts for equiping something, which is great
decision. It's an idea that talking to them about it, the basic idea
is that they don't want you to be end up with a character that's not
viable, so they have created these things that you can equip to make the
way that you're playing regardless if you're playing theoretically viable through the entire game,
instead of having the midmax as well put together as I think the Skyrim system
generally is like, it is possible to kind of spread yourself too thin,
yeah, across too many different skills and not be very good at anything.
Right, So that was cool. So yes, that's that's kind of the
question. Is this is the post Skyrim world? Yeah, we are now
in a post Skyrim. You've now played a shitload of sky Rim and then
played Kingdom of Omelur, which none of us had really done before. Well,
I guess Jeff played a decent amount. Yeah, but that was before
Skyrim. So I'm just saying, as far as you know, your familiarity
with with Skyrim and the systems there, What do you think of what Ken
Ralston and company are cooking up in in reckoning, This generally feels like a
really reductive way to cover video games, but it's sometimes it's just hard to
resist the temptation to just like go down this checklist of like all right,
it's doing this thing from this game and this thing from this other game.
Here's what makes this game tick. And it's just like five different components from
like five different games. So it's like, well, it's just it's just
easy. Yeah, it's like the map from Elder Scrolls and like the combat
of kind of of of a God of War but maybe not quite as complex,
but pretty close. Like it's combo base more than just hitting, and
there will be like pauses in the combos and stuff are hold down the button
to branch combos specific ways. Yeah, it felt good, Like it's very
fast paced if you watch the footage we put up, like you can,
like on a dime, you can dodge out of the way of incoming attacks
and stuff like that. It's not like like Skyrim, you were just going
to take a certain number of hits anytime you go into battle, because you're
slow and unwieldy, like you're you're very maneuverable in this game. It feels
more like a character action game in that respect, but like the town and
quest structure of like World of Warcraft actually is what it felt like to me.
I don't know if it ever struck you that way. I mean it
struck me as as an Elder Scrolls game and a lot of that stuff.
I mean, it's it's real. There's real, superficial stuff like yellow exclamation
marks overhead. Well, yeah, there is that, but also like I
picked up more than one, like hey go kill Aten of this thing.
Stuff like that. I didn't I didn't get the sense there is quite as
much choice in what you're doing, and even then the ways that you're interacting
with the world. I don't. I don't. I don't really know.
I mean there there is. I think you will make choices on dialogue wheel
how you'll solve oct It seemed like there's a speech check too, for speech
checks. Yeah, there's definitely supporting points into some kind of when you go
to jail, you get one lock pick and maybe you can get out,
like it's a lock picking mini games. Very similar, yeah, very similar.
Yeah, you guys are joking. No, No, I'm saying,
like, like, down to that stuff. They know mini games basically the
same. These guys worked on some Elder Scrolls games some other one. Your
helmet comes off there and cut scenes and notice that's appreciated. Yeah, look
like, uh, there's a character creator that you can define what your character
looks like. It's not presets, No, it's not. Yea. So
how that works is you are basically uh dead at the beginning of that game
or or they, so you are the regular people of that world are fighting
against an enemy that totally regenerates and comes back to life. That sucks,
yeah, which makes it real hard. So there are people slaving away in
some tower somewhere trying to figure out how to do that for humans and whatever
other races are involved in this, and you were the first one that works.
You're special. So yeah, it's like it's the way they do it
is you're under a sheet because you're supposedly dead. Then you design the look
at your character, look in the mirror, and wake up on a pile
of bodies because you've been cast off. Oh they thought you were actually failed,
which is kind of a cool setup. For the beginning of the game,
I thought, and also justifiles you know you're yeah, yeah, totally
you're but you're under the sheet so you don't see what they look like until
you get to the you know, sort of like the cart at the beginning
of Skyroom. You know, you don't have to define what you look like
until you get to a point where it's key that look like something. Yeah.
I thought the combat felt pretty good. It's pretty quick. I got
my sneak on, you know, attactive dude from the back. Yeah,
some some good combat would make the difference to me and the third person basically
just more shung off of my dude. That's what I always want that.
Yeah. Like the I mean, the lute lust is definitely there. It's
all color coded to see it on your guys as equip Lute management seems like
well done together, like the menus, and there's inventory, is that right?
I think it's just a number of slots as far as I So,
I asked you during the quick luck and I can't quite remember what your answer
was, but I think I remember being kind of disappointing. But the stuff
that you picked up in near plate, Theroo and Jeff I don't know what
you picked up armor set wise, Uh, just variations on the on the
similar sets kind of more like torchlight or is it is it like very radically
different? Like will you be picking up stuff that makes you look uh liked?
It looks like the varieties there that you'll like as soon as you equip
these, you know, chess pieces or something. I don't know that I've
played enough spent enough time to really answer, though, I think the armor
does is supposed to look different. I mean they're definitely I think our set
bonuses for types of armor too, if I'm not mistaken. There's definitely definitely
some variety. Like you're just talking about the visual design, Yeah, like
you know, like one of those things when when you have a big game
like that and you have a lot of loot, it's great when you pick
up something that just looks one. I'm sure there will be some really cool
on alandish and unique stuff, but I'm sure there will also be plenty of
retextured swords and shields of sh I just have the varieties there, and it's
not just like three different types of like I mean the Eagle Moon armor.
So there there was a point where I had like three helmets in my inventory
and two I'm looked exactly the same when equipped, but the blue one looks
unique and was best spark. Yeah. Yeah, that was my biggest problem
with the Torchlight was the there were like three different I mean, I just
thought that was made by a small team. You know, Yes, they
can really chure out art assets all day. Nakham didn't really have. I
guess it did have still fair mental loot. Oh yeah, it was just
it was like kind of the same. It was that was real. That
was real, wind sucker, That's what it was. Was kind of realizing,
oh, I'm not gonna look that different. Might change my because you
see your guy the whole time and then he's all the third person. Absolutely,
it looked it looked fun. Crazy blade rings one of the weapon types.
I thought it was kind of throwing chacras. I think they're chokraate.
You throw them, you slice with them, kind of cut those the ones
where it's like kind of a curved blade that goes around your hands. Yeah
yeah, I had some of those. Yeah, all right, but the
character they were calling me wock you had like things that look kind of like
that, except through them and they came back to you. There close a
cool weapon. So I mean, yeah, there's a ton of variety and
in the combat options and stuff like that. It's really striking to pull up
the map because that looks like a familiar map, you know, just like
every location that you've discovered dotted as a little old icon in the map,
and you click on it and fast travel to it and you're right there.
You have the same zoom. Not quite I mean, you know, artistically
doesn't look quite safe, but but the functionality is absolutely there. I stole
something from a chest and then a guard had his word with some something things
to say to me. It's like very elder square. Yeah you can sneak
up behind people and pickpocket them. Yeah, stuff like that. But the
the landmask does not feel open in the same way. I mean, like
it's hard to judge until you play the final game, but just like jumping
around the map, because most of it was unlocked, it looked like a
lot of the places I was fast traveling into had like very constrained kind of
like almost cord or kind of design. Even when you're out, feel like
there's a mountain, there's like it's like a lot of artificial channel canyons,
and and we had that we there is up on the site. You get
a sense of that of like this is you're in this valley, yeah,
and like there are a big cliff walls out of the shot where you're in
this cave and that's your movement is very like channeled, you know, or
like they're they're directing you along pretty but there are towns. Definitely, it
seems like a new game with a lot of a lot of solid elements from
from other games. And that's due out soon, right in February. That's
kind of like that's that's where all of sky Rims and really kind of the
Elder Scrolls, Heart and Soul comes from. Is you walk ten feet out
of town and then go directly off the road and into some wilderness and find
a crazy quest or right, yeah, well there's definitely definitely some interesting quests
out there. Yeah, I just I don't know that it didn't feel like
it had quite the same scope to me. Well, Skyriman fall Out also
benefit from the navigational compass that basically has the faintest hint of gray on it.
And then I should go find out what that weird looking thing is on
that. Oh, now, there's seventeen other things on there. I'm never
I don't even know where I am. How does it I'm in the middle
of nowhere fighting this bear monster? What the fuck? I need those belts?
I snuck up behind a sleeping bear and stabbed in the back. Did
it's got an art style to it? I was gonna ask, like,
what's the that is also maybe a little world of warcraftish or a little fable
esque, especially the animals, at least the wolves and the bears. It's
all a little bit exaggerated. Sure I wouldn't go as far as call it
like cartoonish, but yeah, they're not stylis like that hard edged realism.
I noticed the most on the bear. Yeah, the dudes just look like
dude, very colorful, very very like saturated looking game. You're patrick,
you were gonna, Oh, I was wondering one of the big like advanced
in skyrom is kind of how you manage like all these different like you know,
this big world with all these quests, Like, did you get any
sense of like how you're managing all of that stuff? Just quest walk It's
a it's a big list of quests they're broken out into there's like story quests,
uh, side quests, faction quests. There may have been one other
category, but it is. It is just a list in your menu.
So there's a ask whatever, what do we call it? What it is?
Yeah? Okay whatever suits. That makes it sound like there's a document
we burned through somebody pms me asking what the difference is? Taste? Just
let it taste about the same. But yeah, you know it's kosher,
unlike the other which was not. So yes, it's under new management.
Yeah, pretty much. But there's a video of that. If you guys
watching Brad play and then Vinny, you're talking to him as much question being
like, hey, what's going on here? He's going, hey, what
is this? What is that? And what it is? We tell you
man, it's coming out at a good time. February is probably a right
around the time when people will be sun with Sky largely done with He'll see
probably won't be out. Weighs off absolutely, so I think in terms of
when they could have ever dropped that game, that's probably eat. I means
he is putting it out, so it's action. We're nded enough. I
could see it maybe appealing to a slightly different audience. Sure, maybe I
haven't seen curious to see how they how they end up positioning it, if
they position it at all. He has kind of just been throwing their partners
games under the bus. Yeah, they have still don't like that name at
all. They have not been getting name it works against that game partners yea,
bro, No, I think Kingdoms of Amelor is okay. It's the
part where everyone just refers to it as reckoning, as if like that's a
distinct name with any sort of identity. It's because we don't have any fucking
relationship with the Kingdoms of Amelor name, and reckoning is easier and faster to
say. I guess, but it almost did. It almost seems like,
no, we're just calling it reckoning. Oh you think that's coming from like
the EA side, Yeah, yeah, I think so. I'm gonna drop
then yeah, right, modern modern reckoning. And it's just such a generic
way to refer to that game. That's just well, reckonings are pretty generic
subtitle totally. You have proc your reckoning power? Is that right, like
you go into reckoning mode or something there is your fake shift kills? Is
that when it goes all blue, Yeah, super blue, and you do
like a little quick time me thing. The faster you hammer the button,
the more experience you get. Really sweet. Oh man, that's that doesn't
sound great. She's saying that she just control it has the turbo buttonbo and
it doesn't work quite that way. And it's also not as a fence sounds.
Do you hit like a limit real fast like you hit there. It's
like it's like just hit it three times. There's kill him anyway, but
you could. There's a small fun out amount of experience you can get off
with this, and if you hit it like ten times, you can hit
und percent of experience. It's not that fact. Just keep scaling infinitely,
I'd be crazy. And this is there any literature out yet for Amalor?
Oh man? They put up a website that doesn't like the history of amalor
Or, like covering the ten thousand years between. It's gotta be a novel
this and the MMO and yeah, I'm sure they'll be novels. Was a
salvatory was like the fantasy writer ten thousand years say it's gonna be out there.
Actually I could see him delegating that, just saying like, well,
I'm not gonna chan just I hope at the fiction Master, but you know
some other like second second string writer. Actually, yeah, I figured there'd
be the franchise would have kicked off by now by the time the first game
is released, that they would be a collectible card game, desk top top
game. Yeah, an iPhone app that's like a you know, got the
whole Codex in it, and like all the tips, official Bloody Sock comes
with the pre order editions. Sure up the Partners game, so they don't
they don't own the IP that would That would be my assumption of why they
would not push the Kingdoms of Amalor part right, because the yeah, so
like we don't get we get we care about the reckoning part, which is
the game you guys are putting out with us. Yeah, uh and yeah,
I don't know that the whole the whole branding there is not the strongest.
Hopefully that doesn't Just like even just Amalor sounds like it'd be better at
least has some sort of It's just it's I think it just comes back to
the weirdness of that whole deal of of this MMO that we still don't know
technically the name of that's been in development forever. Yeah, under these weird
conditions, and like this is supposed to be I spin off from that,
but we're gonna see this before we ever know the name of the actual game.
It's because off from this game was in development first as something else,
and then it just happens to fit into the floor. Yeah, like they
scrapped it and started over, but used a lot of the ideas. So
yeah, I don't know that all that stuff is super weird. And the
way EA has not really been given their partners deals the love that I feel
they have like a pr And also you have to imagine if Mass Effect is
coming out, they don't have a whole lot of incentive to really push another
RPG. This is like a good solid month before Mass Effect. I guess
I bet three is more important. It looked like there was a lot in
this game, but I bet you could buy it and be done with it
by the time Mass Fact came out. Depending Well, yeah, I would
would argue, I mean, it's different teams, but I would I would
agree with Patrick's argument that the larger EA organization cares more about it, which
you think of the music that's ah that was one track in particular that I
can absolutely hear, the Viva Pinata. Okay, all right, was that
guy fantastic? A lot of it. A lot of it was just sort
of like generic big orchestral fantasy stuff. But you could tell a couple of
times they've assembled quite a crew over there and could tell some big names.
Yeah, yeah, that's that's. I read a little bit about Ken Ralston
and I'm like, he's not just the oblivion guy. Yeah, he's also
the moral wins guy. And before that he was like a big pen and
paper role playing guy. Like he's like a really esteemed RPG design he was
lead designers, like he was like like what just under Howard? I don't
know, I like it. My my impression is that he's like a numbers
guy or you know, he's like his systems like an RPG like mechanical systems
kind of guy. But there's a lot of pedigree though. Absolutely sure you've
been that pays off. I was gonna talk to Brad some more. Oh
you got more. So we all all three of us played trines who today
we did. We got a quick look of that coming up, very beautiful.
Look, it looks really nice looks amazing, but it's trying. Oh
my god, the same characters with Warrior, and that was the same three
characters. What I'm like, halfway through the game. What there's like some
art out there that has like portraits of the three on one side of like
the little Masthead, and then there's like portraits of three other characters on the
other side. I don't know what the characters it's It's not gonna happen.
There's no way there're other playable kame But how awesome would it be how you'd
fit six players into any of those situations that they have to imagine they would
just be like re skins of the same building. I mean even just the
camera angle like that thing can't zoom out completely flips over. You don't want
this Warrior, you get a different one. That's not gonna happen. There's
no way I want off it was. I want the lost vikings in that
game that that piece of promotional art peaked my curios. It is a very
iterative sequel. It looks awesome, it looks it looks incredible, like in
a really sickly sweet like I can't look at this for more than like two
levels kind of way. It's like I feel like I need to go brush
my teeth. It's just it's just nice to see some color. It is
really oversaturated. There's a lot of like colored light blooms and stuff, you
know what I mean. Like, yeah, almost every level that I've played
has a rainbow at some point. Furthermore, also, there's depth. There's
depth to the backgrounds and depth to the color within the background. Like it's
not just like, oh, we bathed all of these layers in the background
in red, and they'll do it. So what's going on there? We're
publishing and release stuff. Is it just are they figured it all? That
is coming out on all platforms? Yeah, it's It came out on PC
and MAC already and next week next week for three sixty is putting out the
Consulate versions. Okay, And I guess they must have self published on because
no Atlas logo on the PC version. There's totally an ALTS logo on the
PC versus that I played. Sure, yeah, because I remember thinking how
weird it was that there was an Atlas logo at the front of a PC.
He said that out loud, and I remember it. Wow, I
must have totally glossed over. I think you rebooted it, and I could
have. I don't remember seeing I don't remember seeing it. But when I
was playing and it was the trying to beta, it was not final.
So maybe maybe maybe there was a holdover from the I don't know. I
don't know, I don't know. Maybe they just decided it. Hey,
it looks fucking weird when our logo comes up on this PC game. Let's
just there's there's an SRB we started, there's the frozen by logo on the
d all. I remember, man, we gotta go launch that game.
The check Trying was a cluss track because the game weird, the game because
they only came out of PS three, but because the game got rejected to
like a code error at the last second, screwed up because I no no
for the original trying on p S three. Yeah, like and so it
got screwed up as schedule, and uh they had like basically well yeah,
like basically what happened. They announce an XBLA version and then did like they
get like the pitch got rejected by Microsoft. Okay, like they said we're
putting out one for XBLA. It hadn't gone through like approval, so somehow,
like through the different machinations like it did, it didn't get approved,
so they couldn't release the XBLA, so it became a PSN only thing they
had. They had a code error, and then it came out really like
the same situation, like really late in the year. Time was lagged way
behind the PC version, right like I was like the PC version was over
and done with by the time the PS three one came right yeah, and
then it wasn't reversion. The frame rate was not super great, and it
didn't control as well. It was kind of a mess. So this is
why this is better rolling out still not great because they didn't even announce the
release date until like two days before it came out, all right, he
was trying to I think it's because they were this was not desperately trying to
finish it. Probably it was one of those games. I think everyone would
just assumed it was going to push into the next year, and and every
time they'd be like, no, it's still might have been might have been
better in January maybe, So there's like nothing to play right now, I've
already played here all though. It just and it's a three player game,
so out December twentieth, Like you know, you'll be around friends and family
anyway. It's like a really good fun cop game. Cool. Yeah,
it's still a ton of fun. I mean, cop is the way to
play it. You can play a single players I played through the whole first
game by myself. I've been playing through this one at home by myself.
But then we did that quick look and now I'm starting to wonder myself,
and we grieved the ship out of you. It's a totally different online.
So yeah, that's kind of I guess you could say the biggest addition to
this is that you can play it online co op. Now, it's kind
of the features it should have had. Yeah, it absolutely should have had
that the first time a small team. How did it work with the controllers
on the piece? Once everybody's in there, it's fine. Okay, It's
a little finicky to get started. The menus are not set up super well
to get all that stuff kind of assigned, like assigning players to control.
It's really rock band and yeah, like we couldn't figure out how to go
from keyboards who controller at first? Like one character was locked with keyboards.
The menu settings are we did it. We did it. We did with
all three of us using controllers. Yeah, we were just using three sixty
controls. It's kind of the way the plan. Yeah, it's it's it
is a very different game with three people. I mean, the whole thing
is just like a physics, physics based sandbox platformer. You know, there's
leaves, there's leaves. My god, dude, Like a lot of a
lot of the materials stuff seems improved in this, Like there's there's fluidnam I
don't remember trying one being particularly impressive in the visuals. It's really nice looking.
I think it's like those both of those games are like it's it's not
it's not a matter of scope or scale. It's not like you're seeing it
do anything you haven't seen done before. It's it's keeping it still in a
pretty small focus. It's just the you know, the detail and the light
of that really really strong art and color palettes. But I think it's it's
not the kind of thing that you just look at and are immediately blown away
by. It was more subtle than the first one. It was just like,
this is a really nice looking platform, but this one, this one
is eye popping. I would say they're really pushing three D and videos out
there, like beating the pr drum about three D vision in this game.
And I would actually like to see it in three D because there's a ton
of depth in the scenes. It's just red blue. Uh no, it's
there. It's there, like proprietary glasses, glasses, the active shutter special
and you don't think you just need one hundred with the in video stuff.
You actually can turn on a red blue mode but get it too as well.
I don't know, let's hope, let's try that. Got all those
glasses. But they they've they've added like iteratively, they've added a lot of
stuff to use those same abilities on. You know, there's like there's air
currents and and fluid like water stuff to deal with. I think the Wizard
has been unless you've seen different, the Wizard's gotten the most more new things
to all. It's all stuff for the Wizard, and the Night has not
really changed he has yet. Did he have a hammer in the first yammer?
But yeah, the the was it the Thief and the Warrior, I
haven't haven't really changed that the Wizard. The Wizard gets all the new Uh
definitely made me realize, like the Wizard is the lynchpin of the puzzle solving
operations, your ring leader. It's the guy who needs to know. Like
everyone else can just be fucking around for the most part, but if your
wizard doesn't know what they're doing, is it will be stuck. Are you
still drawing? That's exactly the same stuff. That's that's that's what I mean
about it being very iterative. You know if you still draw boxes and planks?
Uh, and is an important man to have. Definitely, I'm shoot
narrows, some grappling. Well, there were cases where like in the Wizard
boxes, there are cases where like there are like troughs that you need to
use the Wizard to like prop up with boxes to make water flow the right
way. But then the night would get under the spout and use his shield
to like make the water run off the shield into the trough and steam.
Yeah, neat stuff. I mean, there are definitely other ways. I
mean, that was the great thing about the first game is that every puzzle
could be solved like five different ways just switching character. It makes you always
feel like you are coming up with the solution on your own instead of just
like here's here's the one way they defined that this thing could be done,
And now I've done it. But you can actually there are achievements that they
weren't in the first one, or maybe they were achievements of the PC version.
But you can finish the game with every character by themselves there without ever
switching. Yeah, there's an achievement for it's just for finishing one level with
the same character without switching. But the entire game, at least the first
one was beatable with a single character. It's very difficult because, yeah,
you have to get real creative with the solutions. But the night was always
the one that's the most difficult because he has like because the thief can jump
around, so she can grapple on the strad was it was like easy mode
wizards and stack boxes. So yeah, so I've been I put all of
my points into wizard upgrades, Like that's like what else would you do?
You know, like who needs fire arrows and an ice hammer when you can
make like four boxes to climb on? You know? That's that's what I
worry about co op. That if if you're playing entirely co op and and
you weren't like actively switching characters like get people a little more variety, like
being the night for the entire game. In a coop game, probably wouldn't
like you would have to grieve because you just wouldn't have that much to do
that. That's the reason the combats like serviceable. But you're just bashing on
on the X button like it's it's not. It's like when it's the one
time the Wizard has to go like, hey guys, pretty much. Yeah,
the Wizards back off for a second, has very little to contribute to
Did you guys fight these dudes? It's weird, lizardman. I mean that
is the reason I like playing it by myself, as you get to play
everything. Yeah, so maybe cops wanted to dip into but if you really
want to get the full sense of things, you want to be the Wizard.
Yeah, it's the Wizards game. Everyone else is just playing in it.
It's yeah, but it seems it's really cool so far, so review
forthcoming of that, we'll figure out what's up those console versions cool. Get
back to you, all right, that's anything else you want to get back
to me about. Okay, would you play Ryan? What did I play?
Would you would you play Ryan? What did I play? Would you
play? I played some Apples to Apples? Oh yeah, on the Xbox
three sixty and more Apples to Apples. I played a little more Apple to
Apples. Yeah, I played some. I played some Xbox Live Apples to
Apples. That uh, that was Apples to Apples for as much as like
the single player and the local multiplayer were like, we kind of took some
Apples Apples ideas and I don't know we made these other games with them.
It's close. This was just straight up like six players, everyone has their
handful of cards. They made an Apples to Apple's ass Apples to Apples,
gud okay, they did. They did a to a U. I'll tell
you. I'll tell you what it was like. More than the kind of
the weird gameplay systems that they that they introduced for like the local multiplayer where
everyone can see each other's cards or where it's the big grid where everyone chooses
from, I feel like those modes they're giving a lot more a lot,
a lot more of the cards that you're getting could be like the quote unquote
right answer. I feel like there was more randomness to the cards that I
was getting in the proper XBLA game, which was better because is like that
game is all about like weird interpretation of of like what the answer could be
and when like there's like you know, on the like the board version,
the local multiplayer board version, where it seems like bo all of these answers
kind of relate to the topic at hand or could be related to the topic
at hand, but there's there's kind of a right answer. A lot of
the times I felt like we ran to that several times during the quick look
of like yeah, that was that was the right answer. It only was
when the player was a lunatic like Brett Muir that that wasn't the answer they
got hy Man, Him and I are in the same wave like you just
because just because you every single time, even though he would tell you,
don't pick the right answer because I'm not going to pick that one, you
would always try and pick the right answer. Well until he picked the right
answer well once, but well I'll tell you this, of the online mode
online games that I've played, I've won them all, so so my picking
the right answer, those those people are just being too literal. That's no
fun. Apples to apples, do you find the social aspect there all that
stuff. Does it kind of just drive it's gone, it's dead. Yeah.
The social part was me and my girlfriend's here on the couch playing as
one player. So I could see that being really dry. Yeah, like
you could play that if you're playing that with friends, if everyone ponies up
and plays Apples it on you're chatting about it, like that could be great
fun, but you need yeah, like anonymous apples app Anonymous Apples to Apples
is not a yeah yeah AA to A is not the way you want to
go. Yeah, it didn't seem like that. That game is all about,
like when you guys are doing that quick look, yeah, you know
the people you're playing with and you bring a lot it's the meta game.
You're right, you do bring a lot of the bullshittery is a huge part
of Apples to Apples for sure, for sure. So so yeah, then
it just like when you play it online, it kind of just becomes the
right answer game. Which too bad because that's the place where I feel like
they actually introduced like better randomness. It's a weird term to use. The
truer randomness feels more random. Yeah, yeah, exactly, Like that's where
it has it, but that's where it, you know, arguably needs it
the least. Yeah, apples, apples, did you did you find you
were just running into people grinding for achievement. It's like we did when we
know every other every actual every other time that I played was was actually we
just got the one ship. There weren't a lot of people playing over the
weekend, but there was enough that I could I could catch games, So
I did that. Anyone else's voice chat everyone's dead silence. Everyone was dead.
No, no, no, I mean they might have been chatting,
but I turn off like I turned down default. Yeah. Everything. I
don't want to talk to anyone, nor don't want to hear anyone on Xbox
that's reasonable. Yeah, it's Xbox Live. You've been on there. It's
disgusting. It's not a place for human beings to go and to talk to
other human beings, meet people. So meeting bad people, Jeff curse until
someone says, man, you curse good? I say, where do you
live? You homo? Yeah, that's that's what It's the end of that
sentence, and that's how they know that you were one of their people,
right Patrick, You and I sat on the couch last week, unexpectedly had
a little chit chat with Nolan North. No, North just wanted to swing
by the office. Dude, that's actually you're not even joking. No,
I'm not definitely how that happened. No, he just got an email from
so saying, hey, he's come to either place. Cool. That was
literally that so fuop, Well I got I got that email. I was
just like, hey, No, one's like around the corner. He's like
one of you come by on like the fifteen minutes. And I'm like,
I got like at the email and like I go over to the video.
I was like, hey, No, North might be hearing that. We
drop all pretimes of any professionalism at all. It's like what we're doing,
We're not doing anything today Nolan North is coming in. We're doing when I
do that thing. But then also like the conditions we got from like the
person, and I was like, maybe he's showing up, Maybe he's not.
He's kind of just out there doing his own thing. You know,
I couldn't do something also also worth sating through no official channels. This wasn't
like you know, pr contact, which is how these things would normally happen.
And Nolan North actually knows what giant bomb is. Yes, is aware
of them like that in and of itself. Yeah, him knowing that we
are a website and then also knowing that we had a award named, now
you know the number, Nolan North Award, the Northeast Standard, the first
Industry first, Yes, yes, the first, the Premier Award. What
do you say? He had some funny anecdote about dad had been like,
hey, do you know you know there's He was telling his dad that this
crazy site has made an award for me? Is Nolan North? You know
your son? Uh? And I think the dad His response was, well
did you win? Yeah? Yeah, singhe elder North showing out it's done.
No, Dad, But I don't want to ruin the thing because it's
a good half hour plus of me and Patrick just talking about I don't want
to I don't want to ruin his joke about he's got good, he's got
worse, he's got some good chops and can't just hang scorchingly awful mouth.
Just the foul language that came out of that man's mouth before we started recording.
Holy holy shit. We got a little into it. We got a
little into it. But like he was just we loosened him up some and
he was I can't even say it, like I don't know, I'm not
even gonna say the things out loud that he said, like as are like
Mike checks, like whoa, like whoa. But it was great that it
happened because the tone, because then like I knew, I could, I
could say certain things on a camera. You could, you could rib with
him and like it would be school. Yeah, you call him asshole and
it's okay, it's fine. But and he deals with it like he's like
heck of a guy, you know what, super true gentleman could not really
nice videos videos up now looking days sick. Also, he's got a book.
Yeah, that's it's a big part of why he came by. He's
he's out there pimp in his book, which which I guess he and his
company produced because his brother, yeah, came by with it. Would I
guess his brother in law shot a lot of the video that they that they
did kind of behind the scenes, and you know, it's it's it's about
the making of is that right? Yeah? Yeah? You know uh no
on North you know, is he a voice actor? That is his his
primary job there, But he you know, has gotten close to the the
Nighty Dog guys in a way that I don't think a lot of game like
voice personalities necessarily do. I don't think they get that involved in the process.
I mean, he like he's involved in casting. Yeah, like he
you know, he uh. He talked a little bit about some some kind
of performance coaching and stuff. I think part of it comes from the fact
that they were doing the performance capture, not just like going to the right
fucking sound booth and knock this out. He's he's actually at anything you see
in that game. Just about that Nathan Drake does. He has acted out
and in one way or there. I mean they are, by their own
admission or were, and assuming that character is kind of done at this point,
they were like subtly making him look more like I think that's I think
that's really apparently you actually play the game. So but so you can find
out more about the book and more about the book and and other random stuff.
We talked about non uncharted related business some as well. But it was
just a really enjoyable conversation. I have to say I really enjoyed meeting him,
and he was he was, like Jeff said, just really nice,
taller than I thought was true individual. And I think he's also very self
aware of how hard it or you know, self aware of what his role
is and how hard it is to make games. And it couldn't be more
hard. Yeah, that that was kind of the nature of the book,
was like, Hey, these other guys like I do this part of it,
but this programmer does this thing and nobody knows about it, and it's
it's great that he was doing it because like we don't get access to certain
things. Yeah, Like and he is in there every day, and like
he's kind of one of those people in the best role to sort of tell
that story, evangelize the role of the the guy who has to come up
with the what was it the squib animator squib animation with animations where it's just
like every every single you know, weapon that gets fired, you know how
as different muzzle muzzle flashes and squizz and so like, different different distances and
different materials need to react differently to these bullets. And there has to be
a guy that's this fucking job for like two years, is coming up with
the way these things look and and making sure that they're consistent. He says,
that's that's craziness, that's madness. But people need to know that that
shit has to happen. So it seems like it's a great respect for the
craft. And you know, good on him for trying to shine some light
on that because that's that's definitely and a lot of a lot of it is
a lot of props given to other voice actors. You know, he realized
the position that he's in as a very visible voice actor. That was fun.
Yeah, thanks thanks to Molan North for coming through, and I'd love
to have him in another time. That is up now pretty much unedited,
so you see the see Nolan North and catch it now before we have to
take it down. We didn't Yeah, we didn't even know if were going
to get an interview. It's like when he showed up, green screen was
set up, podcast was set up, everything set up and in case,
yeah whatever because you weren't sure. He's like because he when I talked to
him on the phone, he's like, ah, yeah, I'm just you
know, I can't swing throw it how much time I was like, I
was like, all right, guys, not down, okay, you just
drop it off. A book came in and we rad for a minute and
I said, can you come sit with us? Oh yeah, sure,
yeah, and then time got away from us. So it takes it takes
about five minutes before you get over the fact that, oh no, I
was Nathan Well. I was just freaking out it. I was like,
I don't know what, what do I say? What am I going to
ask him? I was I was having pre interview panic attacks. But then
when we talked him for five minutes, this guy's just a dude. Yeah,
no worries here, This is just a dude. I could talk to
dudes. You can. That's not that's not that's not Nathan Drake. That's
just a dude. I've been on Xbox Live. That's right. I've talked
to dudes there. This goes. I've studied this. Yeah, a lot
of cursing. I know what the basic size and shape this is. Like
you have said, I played some some Joe Danger that's coming out this Wednesday
on Xbox Live. I still like it. I liked it before such rate
menu music I had forgotten. Yeah, yeah, it's a I just find
it an enjoyable game. I feel like they they've created a nice blend of
of the you know of the racing and the tricks. You know, it's
sort of like when not trials HD, but like in the motocross Maniacs or
yeah yeah, yeah, yeah a lot like that's a closer parallel, but
but finding that balance between like all right, you gotta get speed and you
gotta do this fast, and you gotta do this in a way that you
get a ship ton of points through your tricks. So you know, kind
of kind of striking that balance I think can be tough. And I think
those those Hello games, guys, I've done it. And you're right about
the music. If you asked music, great music. I think I still
have a PC version that kicking around on my computer somewhere because it was an
IGF game at first. Yes, then Sonody picked it up. I don't
know, the diff came out up like and they signedly to p S three
and then Sony option to them out said that yeah you guys and release it
on x biling like that. Sony had to allow them to do that.
And this version is called Special Edition, and you know it's kind of get
the kind of microspically, it's a different thing. They added like a new
environment and some other new stuff. So not this same exactly miss policies or
if it's not at the same time, it has to have some new stuff,
anything new to it. I uh so, let's let's talk about Let's
move it to news. I did not watch the Spike TV VGAS this weekend,
but some stuff got announced at that. Yeah. Yeah, there were
there were games announced there, and uh, I guess you know. People
have some opinions about the Spike VGAS. Yeah. Uh, A lot of
people have a lot of opinions about the Spikes people every year, a lot
of people. The opinions are are hot and heavy when it comes to the
Spike TV Video Game Awards. Well, that site still existed for Spike VGAS.
I think it's still opinions. I think it can make money off it's
still I think it's just read actually tell like Amazon, but it's just yeah
who answers? Now same everything. Don't go look at yah can you make
money off of like Reddit memes because the actually Yah who answers is making billions.
I posted my first yeah who answered a couple of weeks ago an answer
what's that question? Or an answer? Uh? An answer? Oh?
Okay, god? What was it? It was? It was it was
a technical question about Saints Row. I'm trying to remember what it was.
I was, Oh, no, it's better than that. God, what
was this? A lot of it was when I moved over to my SSD,
I was looking for how to back up the save files to readstall windows
and stuff, and turned out to be a steam Cloud thing and blah blah
blah. You know, it's fine whatever. But the answer or the question
was, the question was how do I back up my save files from the
non Steam version of Saints or the third And I was like, isn't that
a steam Works game, meaning there is no non Steam version? Yeah?
And I went and confirmed all that stuff and then posted the answer that you
should probably pay money for the game before you go asking for tech support about
it. Yeah, And the question was deleted five minutes later. It felt
pretty good. Anyway, you're on the case. But you you posted some
thoughts on the site about the Spike TV vdas. Yeah, yeah, I
watched them. Yeah, and it's you know, there's a fair amount of
outrage and a lot of kind of talk back and forth about the quality of
the show and the time they gave to the actual awards, which was minimal.
Yeah, I mean there's there's I think kind of the fundamental underlying question
is different different people's priorities of what the awards should be. Yeah. Yeah,
some people looking for kind of the the quieter, more introspective look at
you know, celebrating the video game industry as a video game. Yeah,
as opposed to being a bombastic a little more Dice Spike TV show. Yeah,
a little more little little more GDC. Yeah. Yeah. I think
that's the thing people kind of tend to forget, is that there are multiple
awards shows do rest the year, And I would like G four was around
the Dice Awards for a little bit, weren't they. Yes, they would
uh air them on TV and a next er person, but you could watch
all of it live on the web. And I think they streamed them,
Yeah they last year. They did stream them, some of them. But
even the even the Dice Awards have like weird issues with with like genre classifications,
Like we were there for Dice Awards this year, you know, the
twenty eleven ones, and it's sort of like, wait, adventure games,
that's what you're gonna call these. That's weird that you've created a or you're
using a genre that pits like Red Dead Redemption against Limbo, Like these couldn't
be more wildly different. Games genres and gaming are always are just still broken.
Yeah, but you know that was the place if you wanted your you
know, being Gordon coming up and reading poetry, you got it. You
absolutely got it. Crazy brilliant motherfucker. Yeah. That was That was a
crazy as moment. So I think that, you know, like expecting all
all awards shows to be all things to all people is crazy. And I
think that the show they put on in a lot of ways it fits,
you know what I expect out of a network like Spike TV us the people
that put on the Scream Awards. Yeah, I think people forget the Spike
TV part. Yeah, people, And because because because you see the Jeff
Keely like the face of Game Trailers TV, and you know, Jeff Jeff
Keeley does some stuff that has substance to it, put in the Portal two
app that you put there, like the guys all of a writer when he
chooses to be. And so I think people all year like because every year
Jeff says like it's gonna be better, we listen to the feedback and then
I think What happens is that they kind of get this built up since that
it's going to be better than it was last year, when they should kind
of be recognizing it for the network. It's on and right, and we
have no real sense and the company that's putting it together it's not it's not
the game trailer's TV production. Yeah, this is a Mark Burnett. It
was like, you know, the guy that brought you, are you smarter
than a fifth grader? Put this fucking thing. The guy does the movie
Awards from TV put this awesome thing together at the modern MTV Movie Board.
I don't know if they're still doing it or no. I think it's it's
recent years. I think like oh nine they did it, so it's nineties
m TV Movie Awards. But they were decent, yeah, entertaining. Yeah,
they had funny, those Ben Stiller bits and all that weird stuff.
Yeah, so what were the funny bits at the Spike Vgas. Yeah,
I mean, the creator of a major video you know what, another guy
squat over his face, you know what. The funny but at the vgas
were when they played that Command of Conference trailer and tried to say it was
a BioWare game that was the funniest part of the show for me. Wait
what Yeah, so yeah, it's the what they're trying to do from an
entertainment perspective, I feel's way off. And I don't know who that part
of the show is for, Like I don't know who sitting there going like,
oh man, that tea bag and jokes hilarious, or that YouTube guy
or yeah, some YouTube guy that I guess had bitched about the show the
year before. I think you were right in what you remember some dude,
Okay, I don't know. And then like it was just like they played
some video of him in his bedrooms cursing, and then they had him to
the show is sitting next to a Spike executive and isn't that funny. It
was not funny. No one kN who that Spike executive was. So it's
like, yeah, neither neither end of this joke is funny. And then
and actually, I'll give exactly LEVI. I credit the guy clearly knows games,
Like seemed like he was trying to do the best he could with like
some really bad materials. Yeah, like it was he has like some game,
he has some nerd website things like the guy Cares knows he he was
hanging out at the or of the Gears to party at E three. He
seems like he's been out there. Samuel l. Jets Yeah, or even
Neil Patrick Harris like he just the guy at least comes from He's like that.
He's like that. Cliff Lazinski like its presentable, it's funny, like
cant it's pretty like whatever man where the game is at? Yeah, well,
I think it's it's not funny. Like I think people if this was
actually a legitimately funny show that was like Reverend and like kind of got games
and like it would it would better run that line of like, look,
it's at the end of the day, this is all advertising. But if
we had fun along the way the promise it it's just miserably Yeah, it's
a miserable to full referential humor that just doesn't hit. And and I think
it was actually funny. I think people would be a lot more forgiving because
you would at least like you'd be like, well, look, oh wait,
look it wasn't as this deep introspective. But look at video games,
the fact that stuff that they're filling the time with when they're when they are
not showing awards that they were giving away is not is not entertaining. It's
like with Charlie Sheen, which at some point, at some point that probably
seemed like a get whenever that idea came up, like oh we gotta have
Charlie Sheen. I hope that it came up like eight months ago or something
like that. They slot like, all right, Charlie's get this thing and
he was funny at the time, and yeah, that it must to have
happened. Hopefully it happened a long time ago, because if that was like
a recent thing, like guys, I got this great idea, Chuck Shean,
how about it? I would like to think that people would have been
like, no, what that thing is? That thing is funny, roast.
Yeah, one who watched the Roast is extra gonna watch this, and
anyone who did watch the roast slit their goddamn throats afterwards. So that you
had stuff like that, you had guys like will I am coming out and
then spending like twenty seconds trying to convince you the viewer that he understood video
games with his whole I am video games, I'm in them, I play
I play them. Video games are me. I love that they kept introducing
him as will I am from the Blacks experience, like perfectly, that's delightful
every time, Like ll cool J came out and introduced a Mass Effect three
trailer and then the Command of Conqueror General's two trailer. I don't it's just
the the quality of stars didn't fit the subject matter all that well and also
weren't necessarily draws on their own right, Like I don't know who's going,
like, oh thank god, Ella cool jay Z, it's weird. Who
is It's who they could get? Yeah, so it looks it looks like
it's who they could get, but it's Spike. But it's a video game
awards show, so it's like als, it's a tough sell to a publicist,
I'm sure yea. And and that number, it probably just depends on
what the ratings number is and in some cases probably an appearance fee or something
like that. But I think got Felicia Day, which like she fits.
She she's again part of that like on the right track, like she ended
up being like her and Zachary Zachary leiam I were probably like the two most
credible things about that broadcast. Yeah, uh, and I think that that's
like straight up, I know it might not be the answer for like the
big ratings that they want to get in star Power and this and that for
for whatever weird mainstream cred they want to build. But that show should be
hosted by Jeff Keeley like that they should it, or he should at least
be on it. Last year he was on it a little bit. I
think he was honored at all this they were doing like like in between like,
ay, I'm backstage here with this guy. Yeah that was that was
years before Last Order. This time it was Felicia day All doing all the
back shows. Okay, so they still had they cut to that stuff,
but it was she was back there playing real life fruit Ninja. Yeahs for
like raising money for Child's Play. Yeah, at least also also, you
know, worth a plotting that they were raising money for Child's played during it
and during their Weird Kids. But it's it's easy to want to just like
shred this thing as being like the most embarrassing thing on television and oh god,
it makes me embarrassed play video games blah blah blah, And that's you
know, that's a perspective I understand to an extent, but you know there
are other awards shows out it's the wrong place to ask for acceptance. Yeah,
exactly, I was. I don't. I don't look for Spike TV
for validation about anything, right, And I think I think a lot of
people come from this in the same perspective like the Games is Art thing where
it's like just you're looking at it the wrong way, which is that they
desperately want could be two people's credit that this is the biggest stage that games
have in terms of an award show, in terms of presence, and so
I understand it's worth a criticism, like it's worth but but it's still like
a chicken and an egg thing because you're why is this the biggest stage?
Because they pull up ll cool Jay And because they pull up up it's because
it's on television. Yea, they have the reach, but they're not just
on They're not just gonna pay the cable. They're not just gonna put like
uh, Jeff Kelley up there talking to a crowd handing out awards on primetime.
For that's that's not a two hour broadcast at that point that TV.
Yeah, so like the Game trailers TV is not on at that time,
you know, it's it's on pretty late at night. So I think it
gets the attention it gets because it goes so far afield from what the normal
kind of video game crowd sniffs as bullshit right away. You know, it's
like, Okay, we're gonna get these dudes who really are just tangentially related
to video games, if that anyway at all. But it's Spike TV and
let's we've got boobs and kind of like Dancing with the Stars. Great,
yeah, yeah, I mean there's also an institutional problem with the way fundamentally
video games are made, which are a team effort, and as a result
of team efforts, individuals don't get as recognized, and the industry also doesn't
put forth individuals that often in order for an award show to work, you
need individuals like you would never go to the oscars and expect like DreamWorks Interactive
one studio of the year for putting out like that. That's just you would
be laughed, like that's just you don't promote corporations that way, And like
the gamer God thing that I have a legitimate beef with of like that,
hold on the fact that they gave a Gamer God award to Blizzard, and
then it was just that hard, like I just saw the awards of them,
Like, wait, that's not a like the gamer God thing should be
like person a person, right, not just because what is Blizzard now was
not the Blizzard that originally made StarCraft or Diablo, Like it's all those dudes,
the one up on the stage are the guys who founded it. So
there is that. It's still well, didn't give it to those guys.
Don't give it to Blizzard. You know, it was less bad as much
as then they teased the cinematic at the end of it. Well, I
mean, so that's just on a clip, but that's so that's the draw
at least that's kind of the draw that's been pitched to us for the Spy
TV vgas ISS and that that is the most important part of the trailers,
Like that's it than E three. It's where you see if they could get
away with calling this like the future of video games on television, you know,
right here on TV come and watch Ellen cool Jay will tell you about
Command of Conquer. I think that would be more honest, because you know,
it's like the uh I missed the montage where they were giving out all
the awards. I watch the pre show, so I didn't see any of
the pre show was great because they had it was ed Boone up there talking
about how you know, it was great to win this fighting game award.
Greg saw having up there talking about Bastion a little bit Ellen uh voice the
voice from Gladys up there talking a little bit and giving you a little bit
of the voice. Though without the computer effects it does not sound good,
you know. It was It was honest, It was one. It was
for two hours on television, was just on, was just online, and
I think that was that was the best part of the show. That was
the part that felt most in tune with what video games are today. And
then it just became like a big kind of gaudy firework. I mean,
the thing is like they gotta put on a TV ship. Then that's the
thing is. It's like I feel like us, like us going to the
Spike tvv Gas and actually we went, like was that two years ago?
It was like two or three years. I've been twice. I've been.
I've very nearly went this year, and watching them I really wish I had
because it's it's really fun to go in person, like straight up that trip,
that trip was a fucking blast. And going and seeing the actual awards
happening, everybody's there. It's a really fun time. It's just interesting.
It's interesting because you realize, like even if you just look at the show
and go like, oh, they just farted this thing out, no one
gave a shit, Like just seeing the logistics when you're on site of putting
this fucking thing together and the number of people that have to be wrangled and
just the seat fillers that have to be yeah, feeling like how big one,
how big this room actually is, and all these other things. It's
it's uh he puts it in perspective of like, man, you know,
I'm surprised anything gets done at all. It's it's that kind of thing where
you then understand what they're dealing with with trying to put on something that even
just looks like this. Uh So, yeah, I'm glad that I went,
and I think that that I don't know, that perspective is useful well,
and you can also probably maybe better understand like why like a good bit
doesn't make it to TV, like the it's not a matter of just like
writing something and then just and they were totally there were totally bits that like
totally killed in the you know, in the theater in the room that did
not work on the broadcasts. Like like there there was definitely that sort of
a disconnect. What happens in between during the commercials is everyone just get somebody
out. It's just like where I work, the crowd, so I will
come a back and then they turn the light back on and all the seat
fillers go ape shit again for the for the return ye and it just continues
like a countdown. Ever that makes sense then, yeah, but like even
look at something like the Oscars, right, probably the biggest award show maybe
in the world, right, the most the most produced, most produced those
that thing bombs all the time. It's super snoo Think about all the writers
and like time that is spent in that and that's a bunch of that's a
room full of people whose entire lives are dedicated to filmic entertainment and right,
and also hosts that are like that's all they are professional actors and hosts,
and the writing is sometimes terrible. The bits are lame, Like I think
that, Yeah, I think award shows are dumb, and that's why.
That's why I think it's really smart that they end up packing all this,
all these premiers and all all these trailers onto it, because at least something
happens, right. I Mean, Award shows may all suck, but most
of them don't make fans of the medium feel embarrassed for themselves. True,
Like you know what, I think, I feel like everyone really you got
to take a long, hard look at the fucking Oscars, man, because
interpretive dance routines of this movie's like best scores, Give me a fucking break.
We're like the but like, like we're talking about enthusiast press getting pretty
wrangled in the crowds here. But like you're right, you're right, and
so that crowd isn't going to have that same perspective on the Oscars because they're
not as close to that stuff. But like, there you see enough people
that are watching the Oscars and just getting as as cringed out as anyone would
also like they're seeing at the moment, but not at the fact that they
are fans of film. I also think that, like you know, we're
looking at the person who says that that this is that that this is making
them embarrassed to be a fan of games like has their priorities. It's not
that it's that, it's that you feel embarrassed that somebody you know might look
at that and think that you're into it. That's a valid I don't want
to be associated with that kind of material because I mean a lot of people
don't understand what video games are. It's still pretty narrow field. But also
there are way more people playing video games than anyone complaining about this show on
the internet. Think and you know, it's like you you look at the
number of sales that a game like Modern Warfare three does and these kind of
biggest like they're not just selling to kids with Twitter accounts that are all set
up to complain about this show. There's probably some people to watch that one,
like yeah, whatever, man, fucking awesome, I'm gonna go get
some more headshots like that crowd exists and there are probably some people to watch
that show, and it didn't really have a problem with it. Like you
would imagine anyone that's watching that is watching it because they wanted to watch it,
you know, like some people will have like just watch the Oscars because
like, well it's this big thing. Everyone's you know, everyone's watching the
Oscars like it's an event. Like I don't think the Spike TV like,
I don't think there's anyone that's gonna and just end up flip into the video
game. It's all it's a hypothetical problem. It's not like my aunt called
me up on Monday morning and said, oh, man, I bet you
love it. You know, but the problem that I got spotting on that
other guy's face, didn't you. The problem is that if they fixed the
if they just fixed that part, it would not stem the complaints. People
would still be bitching about the Spike TV V. I think you have three
people will be complaining about that regardless forever, for all time. It kind
of doesn't matter what they do. You're right, and some people that will
never be pleased by this. So two Spike TV, like what what good
is there in addressing with stuff? No? No, no, And also
like again because the dude to production companies, like just because you know,
you know, I can't understand all of Jeff Keeley's process, but like he's
been you know, very forthright with the criticism and like he you know,
doesn't flip out like but and he says that they're reading it all, but
ultimately like he doesn't make the show. It's a totally different productions credit.
On the show, he was like executive producer. It was a producer in
charge of public relations, like a really weird title. So he's the one
that knew the people to get the exclusive. Heis, here's a production company
wants to make a video game ardship that knows nothing about video games. You're
the guy who knows about video games, and we're probably if I had to
guess, I'd say they probably did not listen to him at all, right,
Or they have their book, they have their guests, and everybody like
who He's not making the decision to bring El Cool Jay on. Somebody else
has been booking talent for a while and they're like, here's who we can
get. How do we make these? From the perspective, he is doing
a good up of picking like the right unannounced stuff to go out and give.
I think for the most part, the most in terms of like stuff
that you can announce in December, which is increasingly becoming more and more because
I think people are starting to program with this in mind or build announcements with
this show in mind. Yeah, I think that aspect of the show is
pretty much fine unless you're going to take the approach of like, well,
that's all advertising, which you know it kind of is. But if we
want to get into the all trailers are ads thing, then this whole industry
is broken. So let's let's not go down that path just yet. I'd
step that conversation for the time being. Yeah, so there were some cool
games announced, Yeah, at Vj's. Yeah. I will admit to being
genuinely shocked at seeing the Naughty Dog logo on the Last of Us. Yeah,
that's the next Naughty Dog game. I guess they've been. It's been
over two years. I don't I forget who the lead designer is on it.
There's a lead from from Enslaves, it's on it. This has been
both in parallel with with Uncharted three and so x Ninja theory guy. Well,
he's not like the head guy. He is a guy, yeah,
the creative director as a guy who was like a writer Uncharted two. I
think he was. He was one of the guys from a Charted two.
So it's what I'm trying to say. Scott is a different, different lead.
There's been some things, you know, a lot of people kind of
saying things about Uncharted three not not pushing forward, not necessarily as impactful as
Uncharted two. This help you to understand why yea, yeah, it's a
really well made game in that exact same mold. Yeah, and that makes
more because the visionaries are off working on this other thing ostensible it seems that
way. This looks like like I'll be as reductive as possible in the negative
way that Brad didn't want to be earlier. This this looks like, you
know, Uncharted meets I am lege absolutely, but I trust Naughty Dog to
take easily reduced concepts and make fucking kick ass games Uncharted with better shooting original
about Uncharted. Yeah, Uncharted is as you know, what you do with
the column A, column B, as you can get absolutely and a Naughty
Dog I feel, uh, you know, I have. I still have
the utmost faith in that studio. To me, it just comes back to
not necessarily wanting to play something that looks a lot like a zombie game.
Yeah, well what kind of game it is is is the biggest worry for
me, because is there going to be a bunch of like urban troversal like
cribing on, like really convenient surfaces, arm reaches out and that's how you
know he can get there. Exactly do you play as the guy or do
you play as a girl or is it co op and you play as both.
I want to play as a girl with Switchblade against a zombie horde,
Like are you gonna be shooting twenty of those things? Like I don't don't
necessarily want to play a third person shooter in which you are shooting zombie men.
I hope, whether they're not legitimately zombies or not, the behavior is
zombie esque enough. I think we can turn to the modern zombies are fast
content. Like my hope is that combat is is sparse and yeah, like
I hope that like a disaster report like something like that, like infrequent but
really really serious threats like when you want like the healing system from MGS three
or something where it's like a breaking bones and have to you know, I
mean, like a few adventure elements would probably go a long way. And
setting like this if it's something where when you engage, like when combat happens,
like it's a big deal. Yeah, Like it's it's it's meaningful,
like it's it's you're you're sweating it, like, I think something like that
that really because like, yeah, played up the survival aspect. I think
could be like what if you what if you only fight stuff like half a
dozen times over the course of the entire game, and you get the smash
Jude's heads with a four by four Okay, all right, four by four?
All right, I don't know, you have me at four by four.
At about two by four, it was that's too small. That was
just snapping ahead. The girl drive a truck. Are the trucks yeah,
probably trucks Dead Island trucks, yes or no? And I don't know.
I always thought we saw yeah, I talked to some well all of that
truck, talked to the lead truck design. All of that was played on
a PlayStation three. It was no joke. They put the blue ray in
and hit start and here you go. We were right, and then we
recorded that onto. The last time someone made to such a big deal about
something running on a PlayStation three was the Kills Them two footage and you seeing
that, I was like, yeah, that was that was That was pr
telling me, yeah, that was absolutely real off PlayStation three, and I
went, all right, that's what they say guys, but at least this
right, Sure, Yeah it was. It was more of just sort of
like a matter of fact, like okay, there was never like any no,
no, you're like yeah, okay. It was just kind of wait
to get Yeah, especially those look like cut scenes from a PlayStation three,
especially coming from the guys who made the last feel chartered games. Yeah,
you can say you guys can make really good looking games. Yeah, yeah,
there you're gonna beat it up a little bit, maybe just saying I
saw on chart to do that game. It looked really good in that game.
Curtains are nice, but better knife dynamics might be. But that's a
PlayStation three game. I guess. Yeah, I guess so Fortnite. Did
he see anything else about it? Because I didn't watch it was your dates
or anything? Year? Okay, for sure it should be. It should
be on a magazine covering near you so soon just a girl with the switch
blade Fortnite. It's the new epic game, but not like the new it's
not the new epic games. He played it up a little too much before
the show. Cliffski would argue they played it up just the right amount.
I'm sure he would. Sure, Yeah, this is coming. Lee Perry
who was did he? Did he work on Gears of War? I don't
know. He's listed as a lead designer at Epic, so maybe it's kind
of like Cliffin as a general role. I don't know. They say it's
there's a CG trailer. They say it's inspired by Minecraft. Yes, that
trailer, definitely, I see that influence or tower defense elements, but it's
not a tower defense game. I don't know. I thought that art style
looked really interesting from the perspective of you don't think Epic will make a game
that looks like that. I see them doing something different. It does not
look like Gears of War. It is the first dudes look like they are
human football pads. So that's the first kind of non Gears of War game
they've put out since Gears of War. Well, they're using the Rage engine,
right yea, right up here here in the Minecraft comparison makes it seem
like a vehicle for expansion of the Unreal engine to me, right now,
now here is some text that the Unreal engine is not. Traditionally, I
will say, the kind of hearing of them not shy away from Minecraft comparisons
seems kind of dirty to me in the sense of a small development team.
And then here comes the guys that make the engine that powers every game ever,
going like, we're gonna make a game like that too, what mine?
What I remember? That mean that fort the end it's like Fortnite.
Oh yeah, yeah, that's it's it's a little weird. But by the
time this game comes out that they will have made their Minecraft money, whatever
they've made. Maybe it's kind of maybe it's kind of pointless. So much
money has already been made off Minecraft that they might as well be But yeah,
now, yes, now is the time that everyone else cashes the fuck
in because this is big enough to be a trend. Maybe it's inspired by
Minecraft in the sense that you can buy the beta and then you know,
when the game comes out for free, it's cool, like other little guys
have been doing that for a while. Yeah, it's r Area Forces Craft.
Oh there's no shortage on the Xbox are outright? Yeah? Not inspired
by some are more naked than others? Is there is this one? Definitely
just like the idea of there's a night cycle and during the nighttime you have
to defend your you know, your base against weird nighttime Monsters. I'm like,
okay, Like I was, I was starting to think Minecraft even before
the trailer was over, and I dug around online and saw that people were
talking about that. So I think it. I think it conveys that it's
not trying to be. It's not trying to I don't think clearly presents itself
as a game about building things. And actually I almost prefer they're just straight
up saying yeah, it was influence by Minecraft, rather than like trying to
play Coreya back on our expectations a little bit. Yeah, I go,
okay, well that yeah, kind of as opposed to we see it in
three months or six months and I, oh, you guys just need Minecraft,
Okay? Are they They'll bring in Minecraft to my Xbox? Yeah,
connecting a ring okay? Out on Android? I things on an iPhone too.
All that that stuff is Fortnight huh Fortnite fort Night huh? Got it?
Jeff telling me about Tony Hawk, Well he's a skateboarder. What he
looks really tired? And yeah, yeah Tony Hawk? Was there really video?
You thinking that they should not be bringing out Tony Hawk anymore. I
feel like Tony Hawk has paid his dues he's done. Whatever he means,
he's been doing this for like more than a fucking decade at this point,
just slit. So he did double duty. He did double duty on the
pre show, announced his upcoming game, and then came out to not to
introduce the Spider Man trailer on the show itself got him by the nuts until
twenty fifteen, I think is the last date, so you know. So
that's why it was obvious that they were always going to eventually do another Tony
Hawk game, because they had locked him up for so long that someone's just
like throw money away to not do something with it. Parts When did they
trick? When did they re up? That was that around? It was
a while ago when they signed like a lengthy deal with him. No,
no, then they reupted at some point when it still made sense to do
that. Yeah, I remember that was right around the time the bottom dropped.
I remember they made their ten year interview because or think their ten year
deal with him, because I interviewed him and said like, so, like,
what do you do, Like how do you keep doing this for that
long? He's like, I don't know's I don't figure that. He's like,
that's where these guys to figure out. But I feel like he never
felt like anytime, and he's been doing this a long time. He's been
in pretty much every event ever, so like I feel like he's never really
phoned it in but always kind of been oddly sincere in a way. I've
always kind of respected Tony Hawk at events. You think he buys it,
you think he believes what it is that he's selling, not not the sincerity
in that way, the sincerity, the self awareness and kind of like I'm
here, let's take some pictures and do that. Why I know why I'm
here. I'm gonna go do the half pipe thing. For me, it
was the stuff that was happening right around the time the Tony Hawk Ride was
coming out, when he was starting to like call out reviewers and be real
weird about it. That was when I kind of went like all right,
turned on Hawk. That makes me think that he really does like believing and
all that stuff, Like when you watch the videos for like behind the scenes
like with with Rid and stuff like, yeah, he was gonna be a
really cool, big thing and I think actually idea. Yeah, there was
a lot of things and they just didn't properly say, like and by the
way, only kids will like it, but made even and maybe not even
them if they had come out and said that we don't know who will like
this game, but it's a neat idea. Right. So this is actually
being developed by Robomoto, the guys who did those last two games. Who's
left at robomo right, yea, yeah, most of that team was laid
off Chicago teams, Chicago one of the last last Chicago teams out there,
right, uh. And this is going to be taking levels from the first
two Tony Hawk games and redoing them. That this PS one yeah, yeah,
yeah, the PS one Tony Hawks and what does that game? I
mean z that get me? Uh? Transitions betweens. So they didn't say
anything about the mechanics. It's hard to release say, but it'll be at
the very least manuals. I would hope that they would include reverts reverts in
that game, for Christ's sakes, even though those didn't come along until three,
because I think that that's that's where you complete think combo system. I
think you want to retool levels significantly if you're gonna put reverts in there,
because that changes scope and scale. I mean, they release they've rereleased some
of those levels, uh, you know after adding the revert, and it
was still fine. You know, it definitely did some weird things, yeah,
exactly, like the combos got a lot longer and stuff like that.
But I think that's just you need that stuff for a tony off game at
this point, like, I don't want to go back to you. I
want to want to take mechanics away from anything past three. If they want
to say like, hey, you can't get off the board, I'll be
like, fine, dude, whatever, Okay, spine transfers you don't care,
No, do not care about spine transfers. They're there. They were
fine, but not vital. I feel like the the manual was the first
step to giving it a proper combo system, and then the revert completed it.
Yeah, and and anything past that is just kind of like take it
or leave it. But they showed a level. It looks it looks pretty
nice, So it's hard to kind of say, you know, like but
it was. It was all gameplay pretty clearly. It's kind of ways off
next summer, Yeah, summer summer release and downloadable for for levels from one,
two, not necessarily one and two, right not not necessarily the entire
game cat you know, catalog of one and two levels will probably selections,
which means they'll maybe they'll leave out that downhill one or something. But I
think they were talking about maybe they having that one. I don't know.
They are updating the roster of skaters a little bit and some of the some
of the skaters who've appeared in much later Tony Hawk games are gonna appear because
I think they might have signed deals with some of them too. Uh.
They probably they can just carry over red to go back and resign from from
one. Did not see bamar Jara on that list, Spider Man, did
not see spider Man on that list. I would hope that you would put
Spider Man in that game. I mean, they'd make the Spider Man games
still, so like I think that's that's pretty key. I would like to
see Darth Maul show up also. But about Darth Maul, whatever the flagwagon
gonna be in there. Yeah, I don't know, no soundtrack details at
all. Yeah, it sounds the soundtrack. I'm super the soundtrack in those
first two Tony of games is clutch. That's arguably one of the most important
parts. Or even if they renegotiate all that stuff that I absolutely have to.
Yeah, now it's worth now, it's worth way less. Now it's
way easier to get those songs. Are that like mid nineties punkin SKA.
These guys are like, you can pay us for those again, great,
fantastic our URBN releases have been doing shit for business through college. Yeah,
exactly, first semester bills if if that. I listened to a lot of
punk pants the first time, like Pennywise and bands like that for the first
time. Yeah, it was good. It was a good exposure I thought.
Yeah. So, I mean that's you know, as someone who has
said several times they should release the old Tony Hawk games in higher quality graphics
as a downloadable game credit, I think it's great that they're putting out older
Tony Hawk games. Absolutely not, it's take me off. I mean it's
it's not like that's not the most obvious idea of the world, apparently not
four years. Yeah, but they had no reason to do it till they
were in desperation mode. Yeah, it was like, why put out Multipley.
It's not like Activision puts out a lot of downloadable games period. Yeah,
that's true. It's a good point, huh yep, and yeah,
keeping jobs in Chicago. God bless him. Is there a name for it?
Tony Hawk's pro Skater HD right there. So I'm you know, yeah,
I'm not necessarily the biggest fan of HD remakes and re releases and stuff
like that. But like those Tony Hawk games, think they go through the
catalog they got all the way up the Thug two. I think it would
be great if they actually did do DLC and started adding levels a lot after
the fact. I think that depends on how well this thing does and all
that, because it's you know, you'll notice that they're just choosing PS one
era games, like they're not taking the PS two Tony Hawk three stuff and
cramming in there as well. Like it's just the earliest of the early And
I wonder how good they make it look. I mean the trailer that the
video they put out is of the game and how it looks. You should
watch watch it. Do you think it looks? It looks pretty good.
It is a let's say, modern So I just mean as far as,
like you know, other than an issue of of the size of the levels,
you know, there's not any real good reason that you couldn't bring Tony
Hawk three stuff in there and have it still work right exactly it and have
it look appreciably better, I guess is the thing, because that's supposed it
depends on how That's all the HD means, right, is if we made
it look a little better than it used to look, right Like, When
it comes down to it, it doesn't hurt to look as long as it's
yeah, as long as we yeah, it doesn't alien, it doesn't look
like what if we put out a new fucking Tony Hawk game today it would
look like. But I wonder if imagine they are going to include support for
the rod controller. I was just I was gonna say, in the true
Tony Hawk sense, they should let that that should be a board option that
in the game you a hoverboard. They did at some point, but it
should just not hover It should just be on the ground, grind against the
ground, just never moves. You get on it and just you sit at
the top of the the moves kind of like on the board. What if
it's just the camera stays on you on the board and then you see a
ghost skater doing whatever they're doing, but you have to do the camera doesn't
kind of sense of humor of the game. Yeah, Dick, that'd be
pretty funny if they put it in the game. It's just a shame that
what is the state of never soft is there? It doesn't exist. The
exist. They turn into a Guitar Hero factory and then cut a bunch of
people. But they didn't shut it down there. They did call of duty
maps, didn't they Yeah, they were doing Call of duty stuff. They
were working on support they have. They are working on a big game.
That is all. That is all I can so they existed. They exist
enough that they are working on a game that's not just DLC. I cannot
say more than that, but they are. They are, They're working on
things. They moved on from the Tario to work on Some part of me
that wishes that that that was the Yeah, they totally did. They wouldn't.
It wouldn't be any of those people something. You still you still abide
by the never Soft name in some way still has never in a guitar Hero
sense. But yeah, well sure, but you still hold that torch.
Yeah I do. It's weird, I know, because that's clearly not the
same. Dudes. I know theocalypse too, also well, while we're god,
Bruce willis starting the phone. They didn't know that on the phone and
get po and poh what else of those time? Yes, no, whatever,
I'll talk about amazing Spider Man on the PlayStation one. That was some
ship right there. Never soft killing it. BioWare's Commanding Conquerenceware. I'm sorry.
The trailer just says BioWare, I don't know what you're talking about gywear
victory. But where is that? Where's where's victory? What's the point point
on the map? Where's Angeles? So is that true? Is that a
neighborhood. Yeah, it's the Ela. It's like the former Amanica Generals too.
From BioWare Victory Victory. That's some interesting brand management. Bower Sacramento,
Yeah, yeah, victory glamorous Sacramento, San Francisco. Where sure there are
others, there are others. Alright, money on the table, gentlemen.
How many biowares are there still this time next year? Year? Oh?
Yeah, yeah, that's the direction you win in as opposed to how many
more BioWare No, no, no, no, how many? Bower is
not shipping until twenty thirteen. I mean they're not making has been secured.
Yeah, I feel like this is the moment, and it's it's it's not
that it's necessarily a new thing, but I feel like this is finally the
moment where the BioWare name has completely transitioned out of a name you can believe
in to a name that EA is going to put on games they want you
to believe in right move of games they might or they're worried that you might
otherwise not. Yeah, because I feel like the things they've done up to
this point have made some sort of sense in terms of expanding that name well,
and you're always I can see Greg and Ray kind of being associated with
this project, and like the way I think that's like, you know that
the games the Mythic makes are not that dissimilar through the games the byware,
and it makes sense from a business perspective to put all your MMOs under one
roof uh, from a you know, just a straight up organizational standpoint.
So it's like you take the you know, mythics out there doing Dark Age
of Camelot, Warhammer and and all that sort of stuff, like, yeah,
okay, it makes sense for them to kind of report up through the
same people that the Old Republic people are reporting up through so sure, right,
sure, even even the Facebook stuff they're based on Buyowaur properties, so
you it would make sense for that to the people that made the Drag Facebook
game, like sure, sure, you know it's so I mean, you're
starting to stretch it, but you're but you can there's a tie to it.
But then it's like, and the way that this got build and I
don't know if this is on the spike side of trying to make this seem
like a bigger deal to get people to watch, but saying like here's a
new game from Buyerware sucks the new Buyware ip that screenshot or artwork that came
out through Game and Former first, but everyone took to be all they're making
some Borderland's rage Fall sort of game like that did not imply or even hint
vaguely at what we ended up getting. It just involved the tank yeah,
and a and a unit yeah, which I kind of suspected the times that
it was just going to be a cut that that was just a cut scene
and not necessarily but I had not made the leap until until the rumors started
breaking that like that's the command of Conker game. And I was like oh
oh, because they had already announced that Victory Games was a studio and there
they had already announced that they were making a new Command of Conquered Yeah PC
exclusive with the John Vans can Canagan the old the x might Magic to the
new World Computing guys heading that up. So for it to all of a
sudden be like, now here's a new game from BioWare that we already kind
of told you about. But hey, uh like that this is Spike TV,
so we're gonna say the name that matters and also whatever, like yes,
but I'm like, you know, EA made that trailer and it just
says BioWare upfront it. You know, it's same by Victory is the same
Victory Games. They very much want you to think this is the new I'm
saying that's an EA decision, that's not a Spike decision. Also, it's
a sequel to the last C and C game that the entire fan base arguably
universally rallied around, like general's you know, a pretty popular games. But
that's the thing that stuff since then wasn't wasn't well received. Yeah, but
like, but where are the guys to bring back C and C after four
after which I figured it was gonna be a full on reboot. And there
were there were some some trademarks and stuff registered that made it sound like that
there was like it was Command of Cocker or Annihilation or something that started with
a letter A. I forget what a lot? If you want to play
on people's nostalgia, yeah, like if you want to play on nostalgia,
if you want paying call it, if you can do that, or you
can you can resurrect this name. I just wonder if that other that other
name that's floating around and just ends up being a Facebook game or something like
that, Like who does I think it's it's really weird that they didn't if
we're gonna go to the extent to put the buy our name on it somehow
like raying Regg didn't introduce use it or like try to contextualize it's like here's
what, here's why, because this is the first question that comes going forward,
is like the first thing that anyone has to sit down and talk to
either of those guys is why. And like I think I think they're doing.
I mean, we already all kind of think it's the brands hanging down
a weird path. Like they're doing themselves a disservice what to not be upfront
contextualizing this is why this makes sense for buyoware, and this is yeah,
this is how we're having our eyeball on this and we're influencing this game under
you know what you consider and by aware princess and have them yes exactly,
I have them come out and reiterate what exactly are the buyoware principles at this
point, how this is how this applies to the trees like that is that
that's the only thing left right? Does that? Yeah? It's it's it
comes across as a very corporate decision, and that, you know, given
what's happened to the mass like franchise. I look at I look at doctor
Greg's launch beard and his his tattoo and his pull up sleeve, and I
go, that's not a guy that is out there and making corporate decisions.
That's a guy that's out there and making beard decisions and beard decisions. Those
are those are both true? Yeah and me. But they've all they've all
moved around within the EA now right, Yeah, there's still high level they're
like in like you know, like Miamoto as positions of like overseeing so much.
But Greg seems really entrenched with the older public team, like he's been
down there a lot, like he by all my understandings of its like pretty
much living there, very much hands on with you know, the production of
this game. I don't know how much you know, nitty gritty but involved,
not not just a checklist, Yeah exactly. They you know, neither
of those guys seem like they are just suits sitting there going like, I
don't know, man, we sold it. Now we're just taking honorary positions
and drinking beer and stale boat. But it's it's weird. It's just you
feel like the stakes on BioWare just get higher and higher and higher, Like
every time you look back at it, it's like, oh, now they're
doing the cran of cockey game and they have this number of people under their
perfect and they're doing this and it's it's it's a weird, like some kind
of dark. It almost seems like they're getting they're like getting set up to
be framed. At some point. Yeah, at some point they go bust.
High stakes. I actually, you know, we spend five hundred fifty
million dollars these elevation partners picking them up. But yeah, like you're you're
kind of offering buyer. I recuse myself from those discussions to say our good
buddy, John rick Atello, Like do you guys elevation partners up until the
moment where he was it's just weird. It's like, yeah, it's like
they keep offering them, like you guys want to make one another studio or
thinking about doing a Commander? Do you want it? Yeah? Why not?
Why wouldn't we want it? I don't know, why wouldn't you want
it? You should take it? Or instead? It's almost like, hey,
we got these guys that are working on this Command of Conquer game,
and we don't know who they should report to. We were thinking maybe you
sure, yeah, sure, we'll take them. Their lives are making games,
you know, like if you're the doctors, it's like who else are
we gonna give these poor bastards too? Yeah? Like like way what he
is organized some kind of sense. But with that game already existing prior to
this announcement, and this game already being effectively announced, pre order now and
also you can pre order it now, and even though it's not until twenty
thirteen. Good it says that. It says the trailer Now twenty three go
into Origin. You can preorder copy general get twenty thirteen pre orders. I
guess that is what are the pre order bonus quarter or fourth quarter in the
last year, did they talk about preorders that, Well, it's twenty thirteen.
So you get your acid rain proof jacket, your cool tank skins we
get. You get fresh cyber implants to go in your head. That will
let you get the latest Command of conquer news directly from EA net. You
only get the FMV if you pre order. Yeah, will it have FMV
Probably, Like that's the thing. If it's a key points Rick Flair will
pause and a wheel will pop up that would use what Rick Flair says.
That would be great. I will pick whoo whoo or whoo. I will
pick kick Rick Flair out of this tank. Let's pull the right triggers.
Play out. Would just be ready game constantly. I just you know that
announced like peel back all the BioWare weirdness. That's not the Command of Conqueror.
I give a shit about generals general, I really don't care about generals.
It kind of got away from the cane bits that I care about But
at the same time, I'm willing to listen to a future of Command of
Conqueror that does not involve Cane, that does not involve Joe. I guess
I'm just out to the point they've they if I can't be drawn in by
StarCraft two, the world's biggest RTS, like let like, I guess I
kind of feel like lesser games in the genre don't have much to give me
either, like it. Yeah, the whole of the genre has a lot
to prove to me at this point too. Yeah, I mean they could
be totally flipping it on said for all we know. Yeah, I kind
of like the story set up to some extent. I mean, you know,
it's pretty thin what's out there so far. But it's just like all
the world leaders are at some peace conference and then they all get blown up
by terrorists and only the generals remain. That's generals too. That's pretty good.
That's pretty good. Yeah, it's like that game. So it's just
oh yeah, yeah, just just the exploded yeah, left, Well we're
gonna fight and stuff. Well, we're gonna blow up these guys that are
driving these technicals, all right, great, yeah, cool? Done?
If it doesn't have technicals in it, You're out. It was a weird
teaser even for what it was. We're like the big review was like,
oh, it's you know, that distinctive aircraft for Amana COCKR And I was
like, Okay, I don't think I don't think you have made that traumatic
enough. Nope, that thing also was not that distinct Yeah, yeah,
that that that design appears everywhere, the spray or whatever design Like there's one
of those. Pretty at one point it was distinctive. Oh yeah, stuff
like that, And it's been around when arts games were a bigger deal and
that was sure, but the ed Yeah, I just wonder if if it
if it becomes this full on chase for esports money. Like I was,
I was trying to go down that star road, try to make that appeal
where that where that falls next to the product cycle of because you know,
the next dessert thing will probably be out first half next year, if I
guess, maybe the third one could be end of twenty thirteen. After that
eighteen months later, Like I don't know if like, are they gonna come
down, are they gonna try to like get you know, out ahead of
the tail right or do they try to get out. I mean, is
it something that even compares to StarCraft or is it something Do they end up
going the other direction with it, kind of making it more casual? Do
they make it more story focused and actually embrace some of the things you think
about when you think about BioWare. Maybe, but I mean because I mean,
you know, they need a new they need something new, and because
they kept banging their heads against making rts is and the world was not necessarily
interested. It's pretty good. Can't campaign based arts like a story based anything
else. Like you go through it and you've seen it, and then you
need another one, you know, and then you get back into the same
thing of them having like crank or those out of every year or eighten months
or whatever. It's strange to call what is is sort of a reboot man
and conquer generals too, because I think that already makes a shitload of people
too. Now, because it's like, I don't generals generals too. I
don't know that, right, No, I don't. But yeah, if
I didn't give a shit about the last generals, I think it's why a
lot of people did, though, And you know they're trying to staggle those
if they could. They could just call it something else and then be like,
hey, guys, this is basically Generals too, Like I think Generals
two already just kind of makes a bunch of people go like never never mind
that the guy who ran Generals went on to make StarCraft two essentially Like,
Yeah, Uh, Alan Wake American Nightmare? Uh? Is the new Alan
Wake game? Really next year? Now officially announced as an Xbox libricade title.
Uh, it looks like Alan looks like some Alan Wake. I'm going
to see it this week. Cool tiy what's up? Yeah, I don't
know. The trail looks all right. Yeah, it was not clear on
the setting there America. But I never I never finished that last De'll see
you, so I don't know what the state of you know, finish it.
I'm not sure what the fuck is going on, But it does seem
like he is just running around the country. Yeah, at the end of
the writer it's more it's like the end of Alan Wake makes it sound like
there are other places that are similar to this, and the writer makes that
a little clearer. This this could be like the Further Adventures of Allan Wake
kind of yeah, like he like in the scrolling text or like the setup
text makes it sound like the way they'll get you to different locations is that
like this hot spot of like light and dark. There are a lot of
these, and that will take him to what's like the X Files. I
think it's gonna be similar Incredible Hulk. Yeah, he'll go to a new
place and there will be new adventures there. I see actual FMV video of
a man and that trailer. Yes, that's Scratch. That's the alter that's
the evil ego of of Alan Wake. I will say in that trailer they
I like that they show some of that stuff because I want some FMV out
of out of remedy US. Did they like totally spell out what the plot
is? And I'm just like, man, that sounds so like the way
you talk about mister Scratch, who embodies like his alter ego that is like
capturing the minds of other people. I was like, don't say this plot
out loud, and it sounds really dumb stuff. It's fine, Well it's
my energizer. Just well, I'll tell you this much like all of the
like Alan Wake in game recaps, that motherfucker talks fast. He has to
explain so much shit in so little time. There's like, all right,
I got to let this stuff out really quickly. Never mind that it sounds
really fucking dumb, just bear with me. Also like a TV cut one,
so like it's already hyper compressed to to be a smaller. But but
yeah, I like that that game enough to want to you know what,
I'm happy to get out of like the very specific uh you know, kind
of Twin Peaks he uh, you know, Northwestern Mountain vibe. I'll be
curious to see how, you know, how they kind of explore the landscapes
of different areas. So let me in the comparison. I don't I don't
know if it's remedy or not. But someone they knew something about the game
was that if if Alan Wake was Twin Peaks, then uh, Alan Wake
American Nightmare is from Dustl edn Okay. So more of a road buddy,
there's hope it doesn't it's for pussy lovers. It's it's it's a little more
I mean, I there seems to be more grindhouse Tarantino in the in the
kind of the tone and the vibe. Yeah, so let's see. Yeah,
I'm with you. I hope there's about a third of the combat because
I enjoy the combat. Show did you show a fair amount of combat?
Finish? It's TV trailers, I know, I know, but they still
show a fair amounts. Like I wanted more Alan Wake, but more Alan
Wake is not necessarily what I want. You're hoping it would change Alan Wake
some Let's lean into the storytelling and the shrom hardcore connect controls. Yeah,
that's what you want. Some more of these thermisis around? Many collectible types
can we come up with? They only had like eight before? Yeah,
oh this thermisis damn those did you get all thosemis? Fuck? No,
they really That thermosis really hurt thing. That was the worst part of that
game. Would you want about the combat? But like heading off into the
woods, people people like me and you who can't help but stop and look
around when we know there are things to find, so enjoy. It breaks
the momentum. And that's what I did. Was just very early on,
I was like, Okay, it's clearly this is bullshit, so I'm just
I'm not going to conduct any of them. Well, the worst part is
that, like the pages actually added to the narrative, Like you right,
it was crucial to enjoying the storyline to find those stuff. Yeah, it
just more night Falls, I said before I say it again, give me,
give me more night night Springs, Night Springs, thank you. That
was the rumored name for this. Yeah, I kind of wish it was
like that, the name and that first teaser screenshot they they brought it they
put out before the awards, like he was standing in front of a a
a night Spring, so probably gets I like the name. Yeah, that
was good, but I guess this means it'll probably be covering more ground than
that, so MOREL and Wake in their future. Patrick will come back and
talk to us about that. Yeah. Awards were given out also at the
Spike TV BG. Yeah, yeah, that's all. That's interesting. That's
it. Wait, you're forgetting one, dude. What's up again the Revengeance?
Oh well, I was going off of new game announcements, not third
announcements. Totally. There's never been a game called Metal Gear Rising Revengeance until
just the other day. So until no one's lying, no one's saying that
they didn't. There's no lies happening here. So this isn't just a joke.
So what's the form like, is that into revengeance. Is that actually
part of the name? So how's it formed? It? Is it?
How is it? You're rising all one? Where are all one? Statement?
Is the brand? Got it? Meg Rising colin revengeance? Revengeance?
They dropped the Solid according to Kajima, because it doesn't involve solid snake,
and but it's set after MGS four, but it doesn't do the metal before
it was supposed to be some kind of prequel. It was in between she
wasn't it was in between three and four? Was it before? It was
in between three and four? And then the game got canceled. The thing
that hasn't changed is that it still looks like a two bit character action game
starring riding watermelons getting cut dudes watermelons. You remember, you remember the thing
I said about being embarrassed that people would watch the vgas and think that that
was what I was into. Yeah, I feel the same way about him.
Like cutting a guy into thirty seven discreet pieces that fly in different directions,
it's ridiculous. It's ridiculous. The building, it's ridiculous. At the
same time, it's just like, oh, you cut that guy in half,
We'll guess what you can cut this guy into thirty sevenths. I mean,
like that trailers tongue in cheek, but Metal Gear Rising has been just
trying to find any kind of like identity or anything at all. But like
it's no, no, no, you're getting confused with Metal Gear Solid Sorry,
which is a completely different game that does not exist. I mean it's
it's it's vaguely amusing the first time you see it, but the five hundredth
time you do it in the last level the game like that. Yeah,
I don't know. I think my main problem with it was how stilted a
lot of the acts very start stopping. Yeah, it just seemed like like
all right, like square up on the dude to start chopping. Now it's
time to start cutting the dude, and then we'll get into the cutting mode.
You chop the ship out of that guy. Yeah, I don't know.
That part looked good. It looked like he should have like taken the
cyborg part off and it would just be Travis touchdowns. That's like what By
the end of that trailer, I was like or or the chick from Bayonet
or Bayonetta. I will say this. He picks up a metal gear and
throws it from the air and running running along like the side of it,
like on its arm. It was all sorts of Bayonetta. Who was the
other cyborg dude? Was that vamp? I don't know here? Some other
guy? Yeah, there was another. It was just some other dude.
I don't know. I don't know what Metal Gears Reproduction is doing the cut
scenes so that but this is but this is a fake telespon them games joint,
right, Yeah, they're they're they're doing the gameplay, but the the
writing, voice acting, like the the only time in any goddamn press release
where it's gonna say, like the writing, voice acting and cut scenes all
done by a different studio. But yeah, Coaduma productionsself doing that. I'd
rather they just let Platinum do the whole thing, because I've seen the cut
scenes that Platinum can put out, and I'd rather watch those. I agree,
I'd rather I'd rather watch Bannetta two. Kamiya has nothing to do with
this game, like nothing, like he went on Twitter very uh, very
like bluntly said, I have nothing to do with this game. Do you
think it says something about like Metal Gear in general, for like Coajuma Productions
to be like we don't even want to do the game play anymore, even
we've been trying just failing. Can Yeah, like there's there's I didn't listened
to the whole thing. But they're like they said they can the project.
They couldn't find essentially a soul for it, Like they couldn't find a game
play, like they had that watermelon thing that's all they had. And so
they trying to build this game around it, and they couldn't get anything together,
and so they just they canned it. And then I guess Kijima was
sitting around with uh Kamia and he was like, well, let us pitch
you on an idea, and they pitched him on an idea, and but
they were still like, but we want to do the cuts. I love
doing the cuts. No, it's it's Kim is a control freak, right,
I mean, like, so he's got you know, he could potentially
make another metal gear, like he has his fiction, so he's not gonna
let someone else that part, I totally that part makes sense. And that's
that's the part. That's my favorite part about what they do is the writing
and the cut scenes and all their stuff. So well that's to me as
crazy as as you can because you're not you don't even have to worry about
the gameplay. Some other dudes are doing that, right, so go for
it. It just seems to epitomize how I've kind of felt about Middle Gar
Medal Gears Solid four was great, but it was like kind of the gameplay
was almost like, ah, just give me to the next part where it
goes crazy again, Like, give me the next set piece, the next
crazy bit. And this part does look crazy for as kind of you know,
you're just kind of like sitting in your seat tilting her head slowly watching
this trailer waiting for the other shooter drop of like we're just kidding, and
it kind of never does. Uh, it does look crazy. That's why
I'm excited about it. I want to play it, but I don't know
if I want to play that for like eight hours? How about six?
Maybe six as long as you get to cut the moon or something. But
well they canting metal gear without having there be something even crazy, so unless
you get to cut the Earth and half at some point, I think they
would save that sort of stuff for a ban at a sequel. So they're
good stuff. Yeah, she already I think she already did that. I
couldn't remember quite exactly. She may have cut them right when you say that,
I pulled the guy out of the giant and the things eyeball and then
rode the Yeah, there might have been some earth slicing. She was like
riding through time at that point. Like it was beyond fucking slicing up planets.
It was just way crazier than that. Revengeance. Revengeance? Do you
think it all supports cats faring? No? Like, how many dumb words
can you come up with in a year? They're setting records over there?
I don't know. Did you see his appearance on the show? I did?
Did he make up words? Kind of? What was cool GiMA doing
on the show? Oh, it's it was explain explained the bit, explain
the bit funny, There is no bit. It's it's it's that he does
not speak terrific English. That's true. That's to me a Mootei bit was
a little bit awkward to Yeah, a little bit a little fanetic. He
was bombing his head during the Black Keys performance. So did you see that
shot? It was the best five seconds of programs. Super bearded Andrew Kelly
sitting at that table too, yeah, wow, super bearded bearded up.
Yeah, yeah, he's pretty heavily bearded. Like I was watching with someone
and it was like Andrew Kelly backed it up, but you wouldn't recognize him
so much so much, so what's a Patrick? Maybe you can explain this
to me? What's up with Miyamoto here? He doesn't make games anymore?
Or he only makes Facebook games now, Size works at someone and he's finishing
the last Guardian. Well someone has to God damn it, no one else
is apparently working on that game, so let him do it. Wired ran
a story, Kohler ran a story saying that, but they originally extremely misleading
headline of I'm retiring. He is not doing He It sounds like kind of
like what he's been saying for years that he is looking to take on a
perhaps a smaller role, let's say, general manager role at Nintendo and work
on smaller, more personal projects. He hasn't been a game director since Ocarine
of Time. He's over seen things and had his hand in things, and
it's mostly you know, involved in like we creation and things like that.
But she's like, it's like his role has been like kind of behind the
scenes, big picture stuff. But then also whenever they need a face man
for anything, Yeah, yeah he's there. He's their sales. He can
be the like I helped create this, so it will be magical. Yeah,
Like imagine if he concentrated all of them magic into one thing. Yeah,
you know we music. Yeah I doubt even that. Yeah, I
mean he's very responsible for things like the Wee mote and and things like that.
Like he he's but he's part of that big picture. But yeah,
so Nintenno stock price because of that original headline of retiring dropped two percent.
Ninteno stock price has not been doing that well this year, so they put
immediately put me a moto on like an interviewing tour with like the mass media,
which was like MSNBC, the the Wall Street Journal. Uh. And
in each of those ones, it was like, I just want to make
clear I am not retiring. I just you know, I want to start
training younger staffs, working with smaller teams and making more personal projects. But
I'm so tired. God damn it. I wish they would let me retire.
He's always he's almost sixty fifty nine, I think he's Yeah, but
he's got another ten years in him at least, But it's the time when
you start like grooming and actually figuring out who the fuck your successors are,
Like yeah, like I mean he's already like on Uma, has Zelda got
that under lock? Like he even he has said that he doesn't want to
make se noyone wants nothing to do with Zelda, even though he's stuck.
Dude, he must have played, like maybe you go get a job in
Namcode working on tech and games. They could probably use the health sneak.
How many times he must have played that first two hours, so I called
bullshot in his development. He clearly did not, or else someone would have
said, wait a minute, I'm done. I'm done. The stakes way
too long to get go done? How long? Whatever? They probably have
a bild of that game that you can skip past all that ship. What
was time to sword in the original legend of Zelda? Like twenty seconds?
Like twenty steps walking the cave the next screen, fucking Octor Rock. I
was, I was, you know, I was literally thinking that. As
I was. I was, I was looking at my playtimer and being like
probably it really says an hour forty five minutes, and like I haven't gotten
any yet. And I was literally thinking, like Fort Zelda, how long
like you fucking was the design of that game? Walk forward, getting a
cave, get your short and going on adventure. I find for myself just
a general trend like the longer it takes to get from title screen to doing
the thing you do for most of the game, the less I want to
play it just stop. Some things are interesting, some games that have like
I'm gonna show you you before, I'm gonna show you before you have your
bionic parts or something like that. For like here's the set up your normal
dudes, You're gonna like do this thing and then we're gonna completely give you
a new character model and all that stuff, like in about twenty minutes.
It is meaningfully in service with the storyline. Sure, but if it's like
like you said, if it's like two hours of it was, it's rough.
I mean, maybe I'm blowing out of proportion, but it just felt
like I know a lot of developers hate like the XBLA TCR stuff about like
you have to be in the game playing and like what is the sixty seconds
or something like that, But like that, in some cases there's a benefit
of the smaller games and for older games like the original Legend of Zelda,
like that's way more doable. But now that we have layered I say we
now like they just damn game developers, I didn't do it, have layered
so many systems on top of games, Like those systems need to be explained
introducing them. Yeah, and now that we don't have manuals anymore, like
you know, smooth, smoothly rolling those things out over time is important.
But like like that Space two did a fantastic job of you like you guy
around seconds, but it's like it but it's this, it's this weird kind
of counterintuitive thing where the only reason we need to keep piling more systems on
it because everyone played the last game, but we still build the new game
like nobody played the last game. I think maybe just everything needs that option,
like like the Metal Gear PSP game as where it says like you know,
which game did you play? Or like MGS three had where it was
like did you play HIMGS two? Yeah? Do you like? Do you
like that? Do you like this? What do you like? It?
Shouldn't just do it. I mean they did roll out a lot of stories
or tried to roll out some starry stuff. But they should have done It's
just put a fucking cat on a hill with like something you have to slice
with the sword and be like, go get the cat. And if you
get it and you do all the things like I know how to z target
and know how to climb this wall, like great, here's the sword.
You can do that on your own. Jump off the skyworld, you're done.
Go crazy. If you can't, then you got to kind of work
your way up to it. But they should just put something there that's like,
you know what you're doing here, go crazy. Guess what Delsa got
kidnapped? Go find her. You're breaking you can you grab the rock out
of the dude's hand. Great, let's go right, yeah, like you're
a master. Good job. I like the idea of going through some kind
of like video game like psych profile. Yeah, take this, take this
roshock test. Okay, I know what you should be getting here. Let's
picture look more to you like doom or Toky makeing memorial. Okay, now
do this? Well what if I mean you know like this it's just kicking
look down master chief thing totally and all that data is there. I mean,
they could actually be piling on to your achievement data or something like that
and saying like, we know you've played this, this, You're more than
likely gonna know how to do these things as a result of these games that
we know you've played. That's because they're on your profile. I see you
like Castlevania, right, totally plug and then you can just play and just
do that now that we have like this, this this more ingrained sense of
like, you know, progress ownership within a system where it's like, no,
these saves are on my profile, Like it would be that much easier
to lock into that stuff and figure out at least on the two three six,
And you know, they would obviously need to give you the option to
break out of that stuff, because what if someone else played that game on
your profile? Like it's you know, it's not it's not a perfect sure,
they're still what if, but I wonder, yeah, I wonder if
there's some something to be gained or something to be expedited as a result of
knowing of them being able to know what you've played, if not assuming too
much about the player, at least some kind of manual opt out. Yeah,
it would be nice, but you know, but they try to make
those things so good, and when they make them good, they're great.
You know, like like the early parts of Death Space Too are pretty much
fine, and you know they they help you get acclimated to the story and
and help you, you know, like if you didn't, if you hadn't
played Dead Space one in a pretty long time, like you probably need some
kind of refresher like, Okay, here's what then do well, I mean
A controls like a lot of other third person shooters. Yeah, like you
kind of know how to play it on basic level, but like the opening
of that game is exciting, like you were moving around within like a minute
of starting it, and over the course of like the next twenty minutes,
like you get all the stuff. It's like, all right, I got
my gun, No, I got the teleknesia stuff. It's presented very like
actively, and you feel like you're taking part in it instead of Z targeting
the guy and then Z targeting the guy. Yeah. One more piece of
news here, in addition to Miamoto still being a Nintendo new DLC for Bastion
forthcoming Stranger's Dream and it will be free. It's out, I think,
yeah, so sweet out on everything. But three sixty three sixty when it
comes out, it will be a dollar. Also on three sixties it will
come I thought the three sixty was was a week later. So it's just
I mean, the big thing is you have to pay for it, right,
and it's a dollar, and and the sewer johny Games have said,
we made it as cheap as Microsoft would let us. If we could give
it away to you on this system, we would, but they won't.
So what a bunch of shit. Yeah, it's like those those policies are
beyond irritation, where the developer is actively saying we are being prevented from providing
a service to someone because of these imposed marketplace conditions that Microsoft wants to put
on their service. That made sense five years ago when people weren't used to
paying for content, but made no sense now when they were just putting an
artificial control over. I mean, it's the marketplace, so I mean they're
allowed to and there's the problem of their other being No, I mean it's
the problem is my Every developer I talked to you is like they don't provide
with options and also there's no guideline and how this stuff works it is on
a case by case vague basis, and the more value you put in your
DLC, the more likely you are to get denied the option to put it
for free unless you val but they had to forego achievements. So like you're
you're it's like a shit shit sandwich no matter which way you go, Like,
I mean, uh, it's the strangest dream available. Also, you
play fucking bashing in Google Chrome. I did it on my on my aging
mac book. Yeah's pretty much fine, like browser based HTML five. That's
crazy, it's awesome. That's completely fucking does not have a macport and I
played it on my Mac. That's bananas. It's It does have a Google
port though, so I guess you can play that on Google Book if you
hadn't one play I difinitely run on Rome book. I mean those things are
so. It was a Chrome yeah, but I mean any any capable machine
that Chrome runs on, it'll run yeah yeah, like and then I run,
well, but it will run on You could sertu play it on Linux
because there's a Linux version, you know, like whatever they've they've got,
they've got system requirements posted and this first version doesn't have game pad supports.
Yeah, you're kind of but they did the language imply that it might come,
hopefully will come. It's just ne to me platform. I've never seen
anyone. I've never seen a game worth naming come out like that. Yeah,
you know the I don't know if it was Greg or somebody. It
might have been like the super Giant blog. But credit was given to the
Google engineers that helps make this happen. And well, what that says to
me is that Google like singled this out as like kind of the vanguard,
like this should be a good platform and be a good test case for I
mean not only that, but that seems like a pretty big honor toe bastion.
Yeah, I agree for Google to pursue it like that, but just
like, yeah, seeing like this is of the quality and of the tone
that we want to that we would want to represent Google with in kind of
trying to put this out there as a platform. And it's good to yeah
also that you know it hits whatever system requirements, not being too technically demand.
It's good to see some of the stuff like showing up in this,
like Google App Store stuff that they put into Chrome actually being of substance because
up until up until this, like it seems like a lot of stuff they're
putting up. There are just any even this to some extent is this is
the same way, but it almost looks like you're just installing, uh bookmarks.
Like when you install Realm of the Mad God in the Chrome app Store,
what you're really installing is something that points to Realm of the Mad Good
dot com because it's flash game. Like it's not. There's just they're just
a little redirects like it's no and and this and and even this redirects you
I think to like Chrome dot Supergiant Games dot Com or something like that.
So it's I just kind of love the that still does like a forty meg
install or something like. It's somehow you know if this is platform agnostics,
Like wouldn't that with Microsoft because they have their own bing thing, like you
know if it's like bolted onto like PSN or something was like, hey,
we also have like you know, all these web games that are powered by
Google that you can just get. It's just like, hey, we poorted
Chrome to the p S three. Yeah go, I mean it. Indeed,
let's talk about new releases. Yeah, let's all right, great,
yeahs terrific, Noo Joe Danger a special edition for XBLA that's fifteen bucks.
Uh. There's an ORCS Must Die expansion pack that's out this week. There's
a Fruit Ninja Connect expansion pack that's out this week. There is a gun
Slinger expansion that's out this week. Guns Stringer expansion that's out this week,
Real Big Shooting. It's called probably non and FMV base and all Cats problem.
Yeah. I loved Dancysdale pointing out like Major Nelson got it wrong.
It's in caps all right, sounds tracked play Real big Fish and no,
it's not spelled Real that way. That's all it's. Yeah. So it's
also not like a slot machine game, which is what I was thinking.
It's in Real big It's like, oh, it's gonna make everything look like
slot machines. Were on the Tony Hawks not track. Yeah, yeah,
probably one or two. I ate lunch next to Real big Fish at the
Warp Tour when my brother was on it. What were they like old and
using it? Why they were still on the Warp Tour? Right, this
is the last couple of years, yeah, three years ago. Okay,
that sounds part. They're kind of like the headliners at this point, like
the old right, the old Guard of God. Yeah, we didn't break
quite big enough, so we're still relegated to the modern rock radio fucking tours.
They're still good. Yeah. They were always fun to watch live.
Was that like summer of ninety seven it seemed like that stuff was gonna get
real big. Yeah, that's probably I remember seen them in like ninety five
or ninety six, right, taking it like the one summer on MTV.
Oh yeah, there was. Everything was fucking everyone like, hey, walking
through sears and you were hearing real big fifth songs playing right and you're like,
oh god, what is happening. Everything's turned weird? And then and
then it all it was beautifully weird. It was. Yeah, it was
great for a while. I loved it to death, Like this is really
about do you think you think finally, my my, my, much demanded
SKA Revival. I feel like I feel some fifth wave, but it's gonna
be dub step influenced, like Electros saying, and I don't I don't think
it's gonna know. That's what this podcasts because of that, were gonna have
time, dude, It's like three hours plus here this this week, though,
being Caravella, let's talk about what's going on on the side this week
before we before we say it week, uh tune in your normal there's and
I throw it on yeah, T and T. This week we're playing Star
Wars Galaxies until it goes down, until until fall off, until the motherfucking
wheels fall off. I have my Star Wars Galaxy account. I have my
Rodian Smuggler already created. I have my Orange Crush. I yes, I
made it to uh to tattooing five Yeah, like five, between five and
seven. I would say, all right, do you have a ship ready
to fucking party? Do not own a ship? No? I have a
speeder though, schedule to go down at a nine pm Pacific time is what
I'm twelve. The information that I have one is nine pm Pacific times.
This is all gonna go shakeup. They've had some sort of like big faction
thing going, haven't they. You know what I just made it into.
Ask me anything about Star Wars Galaxy. What is Star Wars Galax? I
have no fucking idea. I don't know that I learned that Star Wars Galaxies
no fucking idea. I went I was hanging out on the space for way
too long, and then I said all right, fuck this, let's get
to the planet. And then I got to the planet do you have the
expansion? And I was like, oh god, there's nothing to do here.
This place is a dead What the fuck jumped to light Speed and the
Wookie revenge? I think all that stuff is spilt. I don't know.
I don't know if you have your I think they've rebuilt Star Wars Galaxy so
many times that that stuff doesn't even matter anymore. Host Starsider, I want
to say, it's the name of my server. Get your character over to
Starsider if you haven't done the transfer, which you probably have like a dozen
transfers in your account, because I have one, and I have barely played
that fucking game. So you can't make characters now, though you have to,
you have to have already. Yeah, you've got to be in for
the end game at this point. So we've been advertising, you know,
our intent to do an end of Star Wars Galaxies four months. Yesself,
if you didn't know that this was coming, it's not our fucking fault.
I had people asking me on Twitter, which is a microblogging service, Uh,
hey, are you guys trying to do anything for the finale? Of
Star Wars Galaxy, and I wanted to reach the screen and choke every single
one. I was like, I put that on the page that has been
on the home page of the site four months, for months, like,
how could you keep up with anything we do and not know months? Well,
if you didn't know before, now you know Star Wars Galaxies. This
Thursday, look for it. We'll be squall will be there and we'll do
some Old Republic stuff at some point, if not this week whatever, right
after that. Early game access supposedly starts on Tuesday. So assuming that I
get assuming that I get early game access at such at such time, we
will you know that that will play that other Star Wars game, Rebel Assault
too great, Yeah, fantastic, it's my favorite to play some trust to
play the y Wing expansion. Well was there one? Yeah? Yeah Wing
expansion. Yeah, So look for that Thursday night the PM. No,
maybe I'm just thinking to Jeff Gersman and Brad Shoemaker. That's it for this
week's show. Thanks for listening. We will be back next Tuesday with another
edition of The Job Podcast.
