One of the greatest coaches this state has ever seen. And the guys that played for him, I mean not I liked it at the time, but they loved that man. You know, it's one of those guys you just love the fact you got to play for a legend like Bobby.

At the sweet sixteen, when I was in college, Clay County was playing and they had a big, huge dude, probably two seventy in the middle in like the late nineties, and they got into a little argument. And I was in the Clay County student section and I looked at the kid next to me and I said, well, that guy fight, And he looked at me dead serious and goes, Son, we're from Clay County, we all fight. And I felt like that was a pretty good, pretty good explanation.

And I think it's because what Richie and those guys did back in the late eighties kind of brought more attention to this area of the state as far as basketball talent.

But then when you go to college, it comes a little bit different. It's more of a job and it's a little bit different feeling. But obviously the ninety two game, you know, to say that you was a small part of the greatest game ever played, that's that's pretty pretty cool to say.

And of course, you know, history has kind of made that a very important moment where where the all black team beating an all white team, and that, you know, for Pat, I mean, we were kind of cast in the villain role in that, and I think for Pat that's always been something that, at least for a while, kind of kept him. He didn't want to be associated on the wrong side of this one of this moment. But nowadays, I mean, I'd love to have him back. I think it would be uh great. You were playing when he was there. He loved to talk to you. He loved that you said lsu as alsu hi and wrestlings. I mean, you got to know Kay. Would you know him better certainly than I do.

Speaker 5: On senior day they after practice, you know, the sports information director just came in and said, well, Coach Patino and I have decided that you will represent all of the former players and you'll say something about k tomorrow.

Speaker 5: That was a lot of pressure because I can tell you that you know, playing ball, I would get nervous, but as soon as it's thrown up, you know, no big deal. But I can tell you that I didn't sleep well that night thinking because here was the deal. I said, Okay, what am I going to say? And they said, you'll think of something, so you know, confidence Yeah, well yeah, they had a lot more confidence in me than I had it myself at the time. But I can tell you, you know, I just got to thinking about it, and I said, what hasn't been said about Kaywood already? But I got a chance to say that. You know, he he certainly was one of my heroes. And like you said, growing up in eastern Kentucky and people don't realize it wasn't like it is today where every game is available on TV. Oh maybe three four games a year was on national TV. And so you know, I used to s I said that night that Kawood was the eyes and ears. He was Kentucky basketball to most of the fans in eastern Kentucky, because that's the way that they heard it through his through.

Speaker 4: His works and coming from you know, Harlan County and coming up through I mean, he was he was the voice not just of Kentucky in the turn he would do the National Championship. He very famously did the Kentucky Dude game in ninety two, then went and did the National Championship game where Duke would played Michigan. That was actually his last game, and somebody came up to him and said, k would you know, congrats on your last game, and he said, my last game was last week in Philly, which is one of my greats, which is I think one of the neat kind of stories of all time. I also loved the legend of k Wood led for Ryan that he used to smoke cigarettes during the game and keep them under the table there, and he was kind of a legendary figure in that kind of thing.

Uh did you see the online thing where Keith Willard was talking about when he worked for coach Pattino for nine You saw how miserable it was. And it was the most miserable experience of my life. Every day he felt like he was gonna get fired. I said, you know, when he was there, there were secretaries that worked in the administration that he would have on the treadmill at lunch time.

Speaker 5: I mean, I'm telling you, La, it was unbelievable. Everybody was afraid of that man. I mean you know him. Yes, everybody walked on pins and needles, not afraid of him. But I mean he was a scary guy. We didn't know what he could do. He could do anything.

Speaker 4: We thought, Yeah, let me ask you, you know along those lines, you played as an assistant under him. Kyle Tucker was saying this to me on the podcast If Your Mark Pope. One of the worst things that's happened is that now Billy Donovan doesn't have a job because there are people who have had since Richie played this idea of Billy. Do you think that'll be something that hangs over him this year?

But if you're healthy all five years, you can play for five years. It's gonna be a huge change. It's almost certainly gonna get approved.

So his argument was the seniors that have just finished. He thinks the NCAA has to let them play or they're gonna get sued.
