M m. The truck is packed. We're ready to go see it.
We're sitting here in this podcast studio. He's ready for packs. This is
the Giant Bomb Cast. Wait, I thought I want to hear more of
the song. Keep going. We're leaving on a jet plane. Okay,
don't mind, might have for colors. Yeah, really, I'm flying out
of a smaller airport. We all puddle jumper. We probably do know when
we will be back at Gain I know, and I'm coming back. Yeah
yeah, the day before Metal Gelling. Oh yeah, well that's an important
date. Keep in mind it's the Giant Bomb Cast. We are packs bound
this week, yes, yeah, matter of hours. We will be getting
out of here. It's all true. Getting on airplanes, yes, of
various types apparently. Yeah. I didn't know that they still flew propeller planes
out there. Yeah. I might just be a small shut out of your
out of your your your little local boutique artisanal airport. They have one flight
per day that goes to Seattle. I am taking it. You're locally sourced
propeller computer plane. Yeah what am I flying? I'm flying an Embreyer one
seven five. What yep? Wait, are you also not flying out of
us A tail number? What I am at a SFO? Yeah, what
is that? I don't know. It's an airplane. I thought all ember,
I thought pretty much all planes were bowing an airbust these days, I
don't know. He's the ones that like Paul banners behind them and oh maybe
sky right, maybe we should totally get one of those and have a fly
around San Francisco. Giant bomb in the sky. It's like Big Boss's face
plant painted on the side of your plane is a big promotion. Maybe could
we get it to just write cam trails. It would be really good.
Someone must have done that by now. Someone must have gotten up in a
plane and written chim trails in this guy. Oh, if they haven't yet,
then they should. You're right now, uh Cheff Gersman hydro scandal.
Hey, Jason a striker, I'm brand shoemaker. Embraer E one seven five
is a two by two configuration. That's my favorite. Yeah by two?
What two seats next to each other? Oh okay, that is a smaller
plane, just like a little charter plane. Right, yeah, yeah,
take those to the bigger airports. It's one of those with the questionable,
questionable amount of overhead space m sometimes questionable, I mean way too small.
That's every plane now, I guess so well. Yeah, because everybody tries
to carry he checks anymore because you gotta pay for it. Yeah, apparently
the Polish airlines a lot uses them a lot. Okay, along with as
dual Brazilian airlines. We'll have fun with your no name off brand airplane.
I'll be chilling on I don't know, a big something else. Yeah,
hopefully a Boeing or something. Yeah, Like all our stuff is literally on
a truck or all, but some of it, some of it probably more
than a little, as we could and still operate more more than we've ever
taken to a packs before, I would bet, although not nearly as much
as the E three. The truck came the truck the same size as the
three truck. We put it all in there, and there's like eighty percent
left in the truck. We could have just ridden the truck. Yeah,
we should have just taken the truck. Yeah, like throw some fun live
stream John Madden throws mare mattresses in the back of that truck and just hang
out. That'd be probably illegal, yeah, but probably pretty unpleasant. Like
Big Brother, Yeah, probably a big truck. Yeah. Yeah, we
got a lot of stuff going on it. Packs. Yeah. Yeah,
Well, some people got got it in their heads that it would be a
cool idea to run out a comedy club for a few days. Last year
we had an event off side of Packs as well. This one is even
bigger. Uh And it's Thursday night, the night before Packs is the first
thing we're doing and people can go. Yeah last where last year's went to
really well, just a little Q and a session. Yeah yeah, bigger
venue this time, higher production. They've got lights and stuff, sound system,
TVs everywhere, TVs. They have their own audio mixer. Yeah yeah,
they got a snake. Okay, they have a snake. We're set
digital one D snakes D snakes. That sounds illegal. Well I can't talk
about that. Yeah yeah. So yeah, Thursday night, it was like
a eight forty five ishes. When the doors will open, you probably want
to lineup ahead of time. There was a there'll be a lot of people
that will get in early. The rsvped We posted that on the site and
filled up immediately. Yeah, within minutes. Yeah, it was like two
three minutes or something. It was RSVP Depp and out. But once those
people get in. Can you still just show up yes fast that it is
first come. You don't even need a pack serve. You do not need
a packspadge, and and that thing will be open all day Friday and Saturday.
GameSpot's going to be doing some stuff out of there, and I want
to see there's like, yeah, there's food and like kind of drink.
There's yeah, the Parlor Live. I want to hang out there. So
if you're in Seattle, just no matter what you're doing, if you happen
to be in that area, you could probably swing by this Parlor Live and
get a get a drink or something. There will be a bunch of games
there or a jump. It's that close. I don't need to do a
thing. And I don't think they're barring people under twenty one either, really
so miners can drink for underage not what I'm at. Yeah, they'll check
I DS at some point I want to say that our event actually is twenty
one up. Oh really yeah, okay on Thursday, but but past that,
I think it is open to a wider array. On Friday, I'll
snake in some liquor for you guys. Don't just slask it up real smooth
do yous in The cops are here. They're looking for you. What I
was talking about? No, no, no, this is coking here.
I set all the booze in here inside me already. What's a good call?
Are you guys excited about packs? We've been going to packs for a
while. I'm excited about doing some stuff that packs. It's always fun because
you know, there are people that we see at packs that we don't get
to see a lot throughout the year, and it's a little less hectic usually
than E three and stuff like that, so you can kind of just chat
with somebody about video games for a little bit. It does it does feel
like a great coming together of you know, people that are involved in all
facets of video game business. Yeah, at its best, it feels like
summer camp. Yeah, you know, kind of sure. Yeah, so
it's it's kind of fun. Steel Battalion, right, with a little bit
more Steel Battalion, but yeah. This year we're doing Mario Party Party live
from Packs on Friday afternoon. The Beast Cast will record live on Friday morning.
I'll be on the YouTube stage Friday morning with with some old friends.
Clarification, beast Casts will be live in front of a studio audience, not
necessarily streamed live, right, Yes, I don't think it will be exactly.
It will not be streamed live. We are streaming Thursday night Thursday Night
show, yes, and we are streaming Mario Party, right, that is
it. So yeah, Thursday Night will stream us hanging out, talking,
doing some stuff, putting on a whole show, and then rock Band Night
will commence sort of sort of like the old packses of your those when they
used to when they used to be putting on rock band Nights. Everything brattle
out West, that's right, Brattle West. Those things got do not touch
the screen, those things go wet, yeah, very soaked. So yeah,
we decided to try to put that back on. I reached out to
Harmonic, said hey, you have a game coming out, right, and
they were like wait, wait do okay, I guess we should probably do
something with that. Yeah. So panel on Saturday night, YEP panel on
Saturday night also not live streamed. Yeah, also on live stream in some
theater that is not has no internet, which it's usually the case. Yeah,
there's not a lot of big tech companies or anything up in Seattles exactly,
So why would you have internet, not a lot of Yeah, and
then we're on some other assorted uh panels. You're with Pat Bears, Yes,
I'm on Pat Bear's four or four panel with one Mary kish Is okay,
and I think Gret Pope Yeah, probably gross Yep, it's a good
group. It's gonna be sweaty, yeah, it gonna be wet. And
then there's a there's a wrestling panel that I think Dan will be on and
some other people. But I still doing that. Oh yeah, that's crazy.
We calling it the panel. It's crazy. I mean it's technically a
panel and that it takes up a panel s. I see they don't know
what else to call it. Yeah, there's no there's really no other words
too. And this is the actual like rumble one. This is this is
the Yeah, this is the the packs Rumble and that'll be Sunday morning.
Okay. Was there actually a difference between packs Rumble and what's the other one?
Those actually are? Yeah, just a separate matches. I guess specific
matches up and different games as well. Okay, where's the rumble? Is
just a gotcha two? K uh No? No, the rumble is is
like WrestleMania two thousand yeah, not not. Two ks have nothing to do
with it. The rubble is clearly a long and august tradition that has rules
and you know, exact standards that must be observed too. You will not
see John Stewart showing up and fucking things up at the packs rumble. I'll
tell you that, playing fast and loose without one. Yeah, it's the
Marquee event. Yeah, there's there's rules. There's actual rules, obviously,
actual rules. Yes, how are you guys preparing for the trip? I'm
gonna get some monkey bars yea, and some water okay, and bring that
to the airport. Monkey bars, monkey bars. Yeah, they're like a
little granola bars. Get They're amazing. I'm charging my three ds are heavy,
an expectation of heavy Mario and puzzling and d yeah, oh man and
dye. I always bring it and think about street passing, and then I
always end up leaving it in my room, so I had to street pass
with whoever is staying in that hostel. You don't get the same like ten
dudes. Sure, yeah all the time, but it's it's always full when
I go to check it for puzzle pieces, and that's you know, because
I don't check it that often. So do you guys find time, like
during the show to keep up on that stuff. I don't. I don't.
I don't want to bring my three DS with me outside of the hotel
room because I don't like to carry a bag. The first couple of years
I was way into it. Sure, but but you know, with like
the you know the kind of the only the ten street pass buffer, like
you found yourself stopping every twenty minutes to go through that stuff. You could
you could deal with those ten people and then have another ten Like you could
sit there and street pass forever wants. It's just not like that's crazy.
I see a lot of people doing that. I don't play the games.
I only my goal is to fill out the world. Sure, the map
you can do like you can just do that quickly, Like you don't have
to go in and play stuff. You just yeah I suppose, yeah,
yeah, that's true. But I want the puzzle pieces, Drew. I
thought you might be trying to sustain yourself between here and there purely on metal
gear speculation. Yeah, it seems to be coming up every five minutes around
the office here, reading wikis and printing him out and creating a giant you
know grid on my wall with red lines going from one place to the other,
and you couldn't even make it through your mic check here without what was
it, Majored was talking about major zero? You said, you said,
I think the word zero. That spun me off speculation about the XO unit.
And then you said the word cipher and that started like creaky old gears
turning in my head that haven't moved in a while, trying to remember what
that is. Well, see, the Patriots, uh had a fighting turn.
No, they the Patriots broke up a little bit, and then at
some point Zero formed Cipher. Okay, which is just kind of a renamed
Patriots. But not all of the Patriots, not all the original Patriots are
in Cipher. Wait the Patriots pre date? Yes really? Yeah? Okay,
yeah yeah. The Philosopher's legacy, it's all than a lizz They got
half of the Philosopher's legacy. Okay, that Sokolov had the other half?
It really or I've had the first half, volgan Van had it. Yeah.
And it's just money, right, yes, money and the names of
the Patriots. Okay. It is a microfilm containing a count account transfer information
and the names of the Patriots, and that money is earmarked for uh.
They were going to use it to try to control the world through control.
They were going to control NATO machines using the image of Big Boss, the
perfect soldier, as as their means with which to control the populations because he
is so cares matter. So a bunch of a bunch of tiny, little
microscopic robotic big bosses running around, yeah, inside you. That was.
That was how they then later decided to, you know, deal with control
once Nano machines exist. Yes, patriots, the Patriots got it. Okay,
it all makes sense now. Then at one point they were all ais
instead of people. So everybody put meddling grzel in five spoilers in your GW.
Didn't they live in the walls to the White House at one point three
ds? What the Nano machines the Patriots? I think that was. That
wasn't necessarily literal. I think that was that was more than a metaphor.
Yeah, okay that the lou La lu lay Low is technically everywhere, right
man. Yeah, well they're you can't they're not everything, but they know
all yeah, so much so that sometimes you have to hypnotize yourself to convince
yourself that you are someone else, to convince them that you are someone else.
Weren't the Lali lu lay Low like an alien race and Star Control too?
Probably they were there, the ladies with the dildo ship. Uh no
naturally ribbed for Yeah, sure, I feel like I need to uh,
I need to like preload some kind of refresher for the trip up there.
Whether it's there's a great thread on our forum. Yeah yeah, oh just
an info dump, Yes, okay, maybe I'll just load that up in
a in a browser. Before someone linked to a game's radar image gallery.
This is how this is how Metal Gear information is being conveyed. Now,
they wrote a fourteen image image gallery and the captions actually counting that happened in
Metal Gear furteen doesn't even sound like enough for one game. Yeah, they're
they're kind of are. I mean, the images are obviously not important.
It's just like they're writing like three paragraphs on like here's what happened in this
game, like in the chronological order. And actually it was relatively effective.
I'm sure obviously it leaves out out a ton of things, but it just
sounds like they just went and read like a metal gear Wiki and then condensed
it and stuff, and I read that this morning and we're like, yeah,
that checks out, checks out. I found I found a site which
I think appears to be crowdsourced called metal gear timeline dot com. Okay,
have you seen that. I have not. I think it's people contributing to
it. The Patriots killed JFK. Yes, it starts in nineteen eighteen or
something like that, because at the end of World War One when that would
make together. But I always tensions were good. I only started skimming it.
But presenting everything in the metal Gear Cannon in chronological order seems like impossible
to grapple with. I feel like I feel like you need to. For
me, it actually for me, it actually put it into context in a
way that it was very difficult to get by playing the games in order.
Maybe I should go back and read that whole thing, though, because when
you think about the games, you think about all these weird side roads.
It goes down of all this nonsense bullshit. But in the and if you
just take it in broad strokes and just kind of gloss over some of the
hows and wise and just break it down to this happen. This is the
one thing that this game's right, everything actually does really well. Is it's
just like and then they change sides and then they double cross this person for
this half reason. Here's here's what side this guy was on at this point
in time, and also keeping like half this ship kind of got reet coon
and you're just like all right, well, you know, sure whatever,
Yeah, that's a good way to look at the medicure cannon. Yeah,
I think the best way whatever, Yeah, the best way to look at
the medal. Your canvas is going like fucking whatever. Yeah. I think
Kojima is at his most Kojima e when he is coming up for explanations of
why he is ret conning something like he he doesn't just say like I changed
my mind. It's like no, man, it was really like this the
whole time because of this. Yeah, wow, that's why layers deep of
like what no is a person's hand can't take over a body? Are you
guys crazy? Who would even think that? Here's what's really happening, Like
the fucking Jesus Christ. Oh shit is painful, Like it hurts when I
think about what do you what do you think Kojima thinks about Kim trails.
I think that Kojima invented kim he's bind it, Yeah, he is,
secretly Okay, the philosophers wanted a way to control the population this is,
but then carried forward the patriots kind of carrying out that stuff with g W
and the AI. At some point they need a way to distribute the nano
machines to exert control over the populace than airborne nano screw man, do you
just like breathe them in or do they crawl into your ears? Yes,
all of that, but minis even smaller. It's you know, it's it's
all these things rolled again, mucous membranes like animorphs cover them all up exactly
like animorphs. Like like the saddest thing about kind of the Cojima, you
know, like like the Cojima break, Konami breakup or whatever has happening at
Konami and all that sort of stuff is that like metal gear is kind of
made better because it is so old and there is so much stuff to attempt
to tie together that like starting from scratch you could get weird, but there
are no stakes, so like you almost have to like if you were going
to set out to make metal Gear today, Like let's say Cojima were to
like get out of Konami for an example, and want to start something thing
new, Like it couldn't really beat any of that stuff right off the bat.
You have to start with a base. You have to start with something
like the metal Gear works, because like the original Metal Gear is just a
military game and you kill a robot at the I mean in the MSX is
a little different. But you know in my metal Gear, uh, you
find a computer at the end, shoot a rocket at it. You do,
you do, shoot a rocket, blow that thing up. Fuck that
computer. I hate computers. And you know, even even the first Metal
Gear solid took itself relatively seriously, sure, aside from some of the psychomantas
stuff or whatever, Like I mean, it got out there in a mystical
way, but the core of it was still still presented itself as like kind
of serious. It's like, it's the dark truth about metal Gear that unless
they were out there shooting guns and fucking trying to faithfully replicate c QC techniques
and doing all the weird simulation stuff that they think they're doing, and they
work like a fraction of it into the game but they weren't doing that.
None of the rest of it could matter because all of that groundwork gets laid
and like inserted in kind of the craziest spots. We're just like, Oh,
all of a sudden, it's getting very real. Yeah, like what
who oh? Okay, Like it makes you want to go along for the
ride to see, like how fucked up it gets totally I mean yeah,
I think it goes without saying we're all very curious. Yeah, and I'm
totally interested in Big Boss. You know, he's gone through so many different
stages, you know, the absolute villain to almost like a sympathetic character.
You're gonna play as him, you know, and then I'm I'm presuming this
is going to be like the downfall of Big Boss and where he makes his
turn, right, so, but like makes what turn? Because you think
about it, like, you know, if this is said in like what
eighty four or whatever, it is like they're getting close to the time when
he has to be working for the American government again, because that's the opening
of Metal Gear. True, you know, he is he is technically a
good guy. Again, I do not want to add to any speculation,
but you know, in the trailers that we've seen. They're there seem to
have been different versions of Big Boss. Yeah, I stopped watching that stuff.
I just decided at a certain point, I was like, I don't
need to see it because I'm going to see it, right. Yeah,
I've been trying to steer clear. But we did the trailer episode and yeah,
that was the first time that I had seen that stuff. But he's
trying to show them just a hallucination. It could be like that Space Whale
or another clone. I don't know. I don't know. I actually haven't
watched most of the Fano pain trailers. Okay, did you guys, either
of you guys see that launch trailer that came out today. It's the last
one that you know, for fucking like what fifteen years now. He has
been making a big deal out of the fact that he cuts and edits the
trailer, you know, masters all the trailers himself, or most of them
creative control. This is the last one that he will ever put together for
a Metal Gear game. It's kind of sad in a way. Yeah,
trails, like say what you willed about trailers overall, Like it's just like
whatever, it's fucking marketing material. Who cares. But like those games in
particular, they were Yeah exactly, they were events, like they were great,
and Canomi treated them as such. I mean they put out fucking DVDs
devoted to reactions to trailers. Yeah, like that's insane. To the trailer
DVD. That's insane. I mean, that's that's stupid, that's actually stupid.
They invited they invited people to a theater to show them the first trailer
from GS two. Yeah. Uh and and yeah no, I don't think
any other game can get away with that. Yeah uh no other franchise.
I mean, I mean there are bigger franchises than Metal Gear, but none
are crazier and few have inspired as much kind of like like a depth of
attachment from players. Not many of them have the pomp and the swagger and
the self assuredness. Yeah sure, it's self confidence. And say what you
will about who makes those games. You know, obviously it's a large team.
You know that that goes into it. You don't really want to necessarily
like kind of just say like Metal Gear equals Hideokajima, you know, anything
like that, But you know, like that's as close I think as gaming
has has gotten to kind of establishing that, you know, I'll tour kind
of relationship to a franchise certainly in the modern era still sure, Yeah,
yeah, absolutely, Yeah you go back to when games were literally made by
one person than then yes, but yeah, uh but yeah, David Gage
kind of comes in mind kind of Yeah, yeah, I guess I would
feel better about those if those games were any good. That's that's kind of
a I agree, like, but I mean you're you're I guess you're not
wrong. But in terms of just like deep emotional attachment to a franchise,
absolutely where people are just like hanging by a thread for like little bits of
information, knowing that but knowing full well that that information maybe in fact just
be misinformation. Uh, No one does it like Metal Gear. Yeah,
And I'm just talking more about, you know, people that seem to have
like a real firm graph on like the narrative and you a direction of a
particular game. Well, you know, he's still he still portrays himself as
I'm sure he is the primary writer of all of those games. You know,
like even even when you've got like, for instance, you're like you've
got to fall out and like Todd Howard has sort of seen is the head
of that whole project, but there's still a writing staff underneath him that's largely
setting the narrative tone there, you know, right, I mean like it
is a literally a like written and directed by kind of guy, you know.
Yeah, Like there's a certain aspect like obviously, you know, I'm
sure Todd Howard has a massive impact on those games in ways that we could
never possibly know. But you think about like the way that Bethesda produces games
and the size of those teams and stuff like that, and you think that
like some part of his role is like hurting cats or something like that,
you know, like getting all these teams heading in the same direction and that
kind of leadership role. Whereas like the impression I always got from Cojima is
like he's a legitimate lunatic sure that has somehow been allowed to make games for
all this time, and then someone finally like looked at a balance sheet or
walked in and caught him doing something completely insane for the game, like we're
motion capturing this plant for the next week and a half, and then said,
hell, fuck you, get your fucking shit and go. We're gonna
point a fan at it. Yeah, at different settings this rifle and we're
just gonna like shoot these cameras of it. You know, we're not.
No one's holding it. The rifle is just sitting here, but just in
case we're missing something remote capping this gun. How much making of footage do
you think made it into that thing, into the one? Yeah, I
bet there's not. Probably not much at all in terms of extra material or
I mean with with kind of the fallout between you know, Cojima economy.
Like I wonder if any kind of making of stuff with ever that's like it's
probably just kind of forbidden at this point. Yeah, stuff you wonder,
you wonder locked away in a vault or whatever, that'll be the end of
an era. But I think we're all pretty excited about digging into that thing.
Yeah. I hope it just goes out the right way, you know.
And and that if if Konami does decide to make more metal gear,
which they kind of have indicated they want to, while simultaneously indicating that they
don't want to make anything ever, uh except money. Uh Well, I
just I hope that they, you know, kind of understand what that thing
is, because I think other people could do what Kajima has done and maybe
even be a little more fiscally responsible, but it's yeah, I don't know.
And he's made a clean break too, like he doesn't retain any kind
of rights to Definitely, no, I would bet money on that. Yeah,
I'm sure. Yeah, even if you guess we don't know for sure,
but even if he was almost certainly say, you know, even if
he was parting amicably, which by all accounts she's not, I'm sure that
they would hold on to it. Yes, absolutely, but I mean whatever,
you know, like he was a good run. It was a lot
of games, you know, joke definitely that like came and went and then
came back, Yeah, and as a completely different thing, and then they
managed to tie it into the first stuff in like a lot of really crazy
ways. Yes, uh but you know Chris Metal Grsela and it's still like,
you know, one of my favorite games, Snatcher, even like an
old Coachima Giant. Yeah, I love Yeah. I always wanted to check
out Snatcher and Police Notts. Never didn't. There's a really good English patch
for a police We should look at the stuff sometime. But you know,
like a Snatcher with the minister yeah yeah, yeah, only with the gun.
Yep, it's way easier with a controller. Yeah, totally. But
you know, like the thing everybody keeps saying about this running up to it
is like this is kind of the last slice of time in that whole arc
left right that hasn't been covered by a game. I mean, it's getting
tighter and tighter. I guess we don't know enough about the you know,
ending point of fantom pain to really say whether whether you believe he's had all
this in his head all along, or he's making up it as as he
went. He's making up I mean, I agree with you I'm saying,
but either whatever perspective you take on that, yeah, uh, he's kind
of had a chance to say what he wanted to say, right like,
like he's put out a lot of these multiple times. So I I,
for one, I'm not heartbroken, like you know, I feel like it's
time for a clean break on both sides. Yeah, I just it's that
that's the thing. Is I hope that you know that they tie it up
well enough. Yeah, and you know, not gonna for as well as
you could tie up a metal gear. Sure, obviously there's gonna be some
shit in that game where you just like, what right, Johnny Sazaki side
stories Johnny Sasaki ki in, Yeah, I'll be really curious to see if
you're sack rising. Yes, okay, there you go, all right,
Yeah, it's making a cydeborg. I'll just I'll be curious to see if
shits on things rumble down under robot poop. Yeah, but it's like this
explosive blast. It's like a shotgun that just melts robots, He poops cans
of rock Star Metal Gear just runs up, gets ready to launch a nuke
and just this whole thing disintegrates, time freezes, and he's just like frantically
pulling out toilet paper. All right, sure it could work. Do you
think do you think there's gonna be this divide in the fan base if they
do keep putting out like kind of big budget games with the name Metal Gear
on them, like you know, the way stuff like Terminator and people are
like, ah, there are no Terminator movies past the second one kind of
stuff, or although the Star Wars prequels don't exist kind of thing like are
you know, are people gonna like, are the diehard fans gonna draw their
lines with sand skeptic and just be like yeah, I think it depends on
what they do. Rising is a great metal Gear game, right, but
I still it's not necessarily I feel like it hasn't been universally embraced. Even
I can't help, but if people have bad tastes, I'm not here to
comment one way or the other. I just I know that I see a
number of people who say they're not super into Rising that seemed to be pretty
big medicar fans didn't really try to be Like Dan, for instance, has
never played Rising. You know that's his problem, like like self proclaimed biggest
metal gear fan in the world, like doesn't consider that game like important enough
to consume immediately. And he didn't play Acid, which people seem to really
like Acid, right, I really want to see that. I pulled up
my my copy of Acid too, and I completely forgot they have a three
D steroscopic mode that yeah, like it actually comes like board yep. I'm
like, what the fuck is this? Oh my god? Wow? Yeah,
because they would double up the images on on the PSP, and yet
he was those glasses up to him. It was not the first or the
second one sec second. That game is so weird with the crazy like neon
colored sell shading. Yeah, they did sell shading in that one where it's
realistic. Yeah. Yeah, neat games I like, guess indeed long and
storied history. But there are other games in the world besides Medal Gear,
thankfully, where we all would have lost our mind years ago. So I've
heardst Medal Gear all the time. Yeah, seriously, Jeff, tell me
about one or more of them. There's Gears of War that's another video game
and also has Gear in the title. Yeah. Uh they even read franchise.
Yes, so they reissued Gears of War one this wee for Xbox One
as Gears of War Ultimate Edition. And I wasn't really sure what to expect
going into this thing. I know, you you had seen it ahead of
time, and you know kind of when you came back and said, yeah,
the double frame rate was only for multiplayer, like, I was a
little heartbroken. Yeah, but that's still like today. I saw people posting
on forums assuming that the whole thing was sixty frans a second, like yeah,
yeah, I was surprised by that. Uh yeah, So I wasn't
really sure what to expect going into that thing. But I really really really
enjoyed Gears of War when it was first released, like that was just an
incredible game. It was an incredible moment like that generation. It was kind
of a landmark release. Yeah, and it informed so many things afterwards in
terms of just like you know, positive and negative. You know, it's
like the walk and Talk stuff that didn't necessarily get on your nerves and Gears
of War one. By the time two and three came around, you know,
you had your pat answer about you know, walk and talks and overly
brown shooters and stuff like that. You know, like they kind of drove
it into the ground a little bit. But also the cover mechanics and the
way it handled a lot of that stuff, and the way it kind of
changed third person shooting or in popularize these kind of new ideas like really changed
all of video games across multiple genres and stuff like that. You know,
games that weren't necessarily shooters first still found a way to put those sorts of
mechanics like to them. It felt like every game last generation that did not
immediately have its own identity just assumed Gears of Wars identity, you know,
yeah, Eve even even stuff like that weird Star Trek action game that they
made, Like any game that you could name that wasn't immediately set out.
So we're making a license game where you'd want to make a third person so
you could see the license a little more clearly. You were making you were
trying to figure out if it had guns in it, and figuring out a
way to make people hide behind stuff. Just that that offset over the shoulder
camera perspective, like all that stuff just was just everywhere. So, I
mean, Gears of War is immense. It's it casts a huge shadow over
that generation that we still feel today. So I was wasn't really sure how
going back to it would really feel. And it turns out like I think
that game has aged incredibly poorly. Uh, in part because it was so
big, in part because the sequels even iterated on those mechanics. You know,
this is Gears of War one, not two or three. I think
it'd be easier to swallow three at this point, because even they changed it
up a few and you know, a few meaningful ways, and added a
good co op mode, you know, or added a good co op versus
aimode as opposed to co op story. So yeah, it's one of those
things where it's like it doesn't perform great, you know, there's still some
frame rate hitches and stuff like that. Even even on the Nextbox one,
the visuals got an upgrade. I mean, it's it's night and day.
But at the same time, like it doesn't look like a modern game necessarily,
so some of the you know, like improvements of the gameplayer over the
years, they didn't bring any of that into No, it's like the pacing
of it, Like the game just feels very one dimensional, where it's just
literally like you're walking up to a checkpoint, like I recognize every single checkpoint
in Years of War, which is weird. I didn't actually expect that,
but instead it was just like, oh, here's the part where you're in
the circle and they're gonna open holes around You're gonna you know, you're gonna
fight your way around here, like, oh, here's the spot where you
pushed the car, here's the spot where you know, here's the nighttime spot
where you're shining the UV light on the krill. Obviously that's you know,
kind of a set piece moment. Fighting the dude on the train, Yeah,
exactly. You're fighting the dudes, You're you're working your way to the
front of the train. You're fighting General rom you know, like like that
stuff, Like I was surprised by how much of it kind of came rushing
back. But then you know, along with that came like this feeling of
like, you know, like this action is very one note. There's not
a lot else going onto. You know, it's just kind of one firefight
after another, and they're all kind of similar. Yeah, they're all identical,
damn near. You know, it's it's just like, okay, here's
a part where you're gonna fight some some uh, some wretches, and they're
the glowing ones this time, so look out. Uh, you know,
the the one little that there's like one encounter in that game that I feel
like feels markedly different, and it's when you're underground, uh, when you
are coming up on the pumping station uh to kind of like plant your your
your mapping device and get out of the underground. Like that station has multiple
ways up onto it, and there are a bunch of enemies all around,
like it feels a little more open than the rest of the game. Uh,
And playing that, you're like, oh, okay, yeah, I
remember this checkpoint actually being a fucking pain in the ass because you know,
just like we weren't great as you know, as as seasoned with that type
of gameplay back then, our enemies and stuff like that. Yeah, like
you just had to watch your sides, your your corners, of right.
But at this point, you know, like, actually, I've also gotten
way better at just throw grenades into into holes over the nine years. Uh
So in that first game, I didn't close a hole at all. First
couple of times through it, I was just terrible at throwing those grenades.
This time nailed almost everyone. Uh And so it's weird because I just I
don't think it's I don't think it's a great game. I don't think people
should should spend their time playing it because it's just it has aged so poorly.
But also I still have a reference for Gears of War for what it
did for video games, and I really really did enjoy it. At the
time, it seemed like they just spend all their time on the multiplayer,
which if you care about that, then there's more to it than than what
I'm saying here. You know, you might still get some enjoyment out of
it, But do you think that there were more people that were interested in
the multiplayer aspect of it at this point. Probably. I don't know,
it's just like, certainly not when the game came out. Yeah, I
think there's certainly a community of people that were interested in the multiplayer in Gears
of War, and you know, like it's let's not forget it's been four
years. Well no, god completely forgot Judgment. I was about to say
it's been four years since the Years of War release, but then yeah,
Judgment also came out, but even that was like two yeah, probably three
probably two maybe three. Yeah, probably it's been even a while since Judgment,
but that one, you know, obviously did not go over as well.
Three definitely, not definitely, but either way, you know, like,
if you're a diehard Gears of War multiplayer person, you haven't had a
new thing in a while, and yeah, you're probably buying this and playing
it and good on you. Like what I mean was like a hold over
until proper new years of work. But it's actually it's kind of weird because
it's specifically those people that make the Gears of War multiplayer so fucking insufferable now
because that game has just you know, and this happened over the course of
its development, people just that stuck with it got way better at it.
People that went to play other games and cared about the campaign played a lot
of Horde mode you'd get in the competitive multiplayer, and it was just like
it was a different game than than what you were playing in any of the
other modes, because it just became I'm going to roll it behind you,
shotgun, You'm gonna roll behind you, stick you with a grenade, roll
away, and those tactics kind of rule the day. Uh, And that's
fine. Some people really like that. I think it's completely I think it's
super lame. I mean, it could be super frustrating when you're not good
at it, because you're just dying in one hit from things that you didn't
see coming. Yeah. Yeah. I think someone like coming into Gears of
War for the first time right now and like playing this is gonna go like,
all right, this campaign doesn't look so great and this multiplayer is like
annoying as shit? What the fuck? Why do people like Gears of War?
Like they'd be really taken aback? I think by it, like it's
not a good primer. It's not a good way to like reintroduce Gears of
War. Did they change anything in the multiplayer? Yeah, they did.
They they well, I mean it's it's sixty frames per second for starters,
but that's awesome. Like they had spotting front, which I think didn't show
up until Gears That's where that's where you get some of the later mechanics roll
back in. So they did some things there. They've got you know,
playlists and hoppers and stuff like that for a lot of different modes. And
and I assume like you know all the dealc. You know, they have
dec maps from one. There are a lot of maps in it, so
it's like it but it's it's one of those things where like maybe they should
have just made like eight Gears of War multiplayer least two and three with all
the maps. Man, it's done. If they had adapted like the Horde
mode from three into this as well or something like that would have been a
huge game changer for me. I think if they if they had rolled a
Horde mode back into Gears one, uh and and put that in, that
would be huge. Oh man, I'm like Gears one maps like that fountain
area you were talking about, like that could be a yeah ain't game.
Yeah, So I think that would have been very big, But they didn't
do that. And you know it's it's an upres it's not you know,
like I feel like, you know, if you're gonna remake a game like
this game to truly do Gears of War one Justice, you would need to
spend more dev time on it than would be actually sensible. Yeah, that
wo'd actually be sensible, especially if you're a studio making Gears of War four.
Yeah, exactly, Like I look at this and go like this should
have gotten the Resident Evil remake treatment. Yep, Like someone should have you
sat down and said, like, let's let's rebounce every encounter, let's touch
every part of this game boring stuff. Yeah, exactly, tighten this stuff
up, like like, do things to it. Tell the same story.
Uh, and in some case you can probably use the same dialogue. I
think some of the dialogues a little clunky this you know these days, but
you know you could probably get away with that. Well it's insolve nostalgic as
well, and that's like sure, sure, but I think you know you
could. You could do a lot to it and and freshen that game up
in a way that would make it awesome. Yeah, I'm with you,
because, like, you know, establishing those characters all that other stuff,
like you know, let's say what you will like there. You know,
I think some people write off the Gears of War characters is just like big
dumb thick and they are. But like, over the course of that trilogy,
you you come to terms, you know. I came to terms of
that and really enjoyed like the story that they told, even if it was
like confusing along the way. Yeah, yeah, I think that that that
Gears of War deserves better than what it got with Ultimate Additions a pretty big
missed up, yeah, missed opportunity. Yeah, absolutely, that's yeah,
that kind of bums me out. It's probably cheap to make, yeah,
I bet it almost seems like something that like as they were getting ready to
make Gears of War four, they just like, now, let's re familiarize
ourselves with the tech and do this first. To do this on the way
to Gears four, I don't really know, but it's like, hey,
those remasters are doing real good nowadays. Maybe we'll do one too. You
also get like access to like the previous games, like like through back backwards,
incredibility will open up I guess all four of the games. It's cool,
which yeah, I mean that's that's a decent price for that stuff.
I think like going back to original Gears of War one, right now,
it is a blurry, crazy mess, Like you look at it and go
like, man, what, like what were we thinking? Like at the
time that game was revolutionary and looked incredible and you were like, oh my
god. But like you go back and look at it now, it's like,
you know, this still actually runs. Well, it's one of those
things we're playing the multiplayer. I went back and played some Gears of War
one multiplayer. While I was playing some of Ultimate Edition, I was like,
no, this is actually still fine. You could still play this awesome.
Okay, Like it's blurry, but the gameplay is still there. Yeah,
you could still do this. If this is your first encounter with Gears,
if you're one of those people, forty dollars doesn't seem like a really
bad deal. Like I hate throwing like value into the equation, sure you
or anything like that, But it's one of those things where I feel like,
if it's your first experience with Gears, you will be left kind of
wondering why anyone ever cared about Gears of War because it hasn't it doesn't aged,
well, it's it's kind of just clunky, and there is some potential
for that. But you know, some people like to go back and experience
the whole arc of a thing that they missed, you know, totally,
even even if the first one doesn't hold up that well, Like just completionists
will want to say, well, I have seen the entire story, thank
you. Yes. It would have required a very specific mindset to to enjoy
Gears of War one at this point, like you, you'd have to approach
like a historian, like yeah, and you could play co Op. I
think if you're with another person and you're talking and whatever, then it's probably
all right because I mean playton small chunks basically, because it's about pretty similar.
It is all very similar. A lot of fond memories of co Op
Gears Local Yeah, sure, yeah, it's got split screen, it's got
online, got online. Yeah. Do you know what the split screen looked
like? Try that out at all? I didn't know, okay, because
you said that it was already running it like thirty and then yeah, like
some in some cases like berserk or fight stuff like that, where this the
frame rate takes some hits here and there, and then one spot where like
the world didn't draw in like a handful of spots where the AI is just
rotten. Yeah, like your squad members just don't keep up with you,
or the AI doesn't activate, the enemy AI doesn't activate. So here's like
shooting dummies that are standing they're taking I seem to remember that in the first
game. Yeah, so like that sort of stuff happened multiple times to me
across the campaign an ultimate edition. Yeah, it's that is a bummer.
Yeah, it is a bummer. Like I said, Gears of the War
deserves better. I can't imagine they'll do anything like this for the other two.
No, it seems like a one and done kind of thing. I
mean, you know, Force Force coming out next year, So have they
said that, I believe. I mean it seems like it has to you,
I would hope. So I don't know. I'm just kind of running
out of time to do anything else, Like like having this thing come out
and then linger I think would be a really bad thing for the Years of
War franchise, Like this kind of has to be like, hey, play
some Gears War multiplayer while we make the real Gears of War sequel or something.
People who are a way in the Gears multiplayer will probably just be coming
off of this about this time next year. I guess YEA, hopefully sure
for them. I mean, for as botched as the master Chief collection was.
You know, you had all those games, that's a damn fine collection,
Like all the problems aside, Like that thing was looking like an amazing
package of stuff. Boy man, that could have been great. Yeah,
it's pretty nice, is it. It's okay, we haven't had we haven't
had the Drew Scandal master Chief Collection check in at all. Honestly, I
haven't checked in in a while, but I think some of the things I
last time I checked, I think to curb a lot of the matchmaking issues.
Instead of like a lobby like Call of Duty style where you sort of
roll with the same group or you you know, once a game is done,
you go back to the matchmaking thing, they just kill it all completely
and bump you back to the menu and you have to start initiate the searching
and fixed it by starting to cut features. Yeah, so I haven't been
back in a while, so maybe that's different now. I don't know.
Well, they put a DST in, it's true, so I guess that's
something. Don't you feel better now? Smoky jazz makes everybody feel better.
Yep, it's fact. It's a scientific fact. All right, Well there's
your Gears of War minute. Did you're even chewing on anything that's you uh
sorry, besides puzzling dragons? Yeah, that's as you know, you've been
been chewing a piece of leather as you wait for met gear. So then
the Mario puzzling dragons? Yeah, move, No, no, I'm studying
the Mario. Sorry, I've been doing a saying puzzling dragons when really,
I mean Mario and puzzling drection. Are you just playing the Mario side of
it? Yeah? Yeah, I'm not. You know, I'm not.
It's it's my before bed things. I'm not getting too far, a little
bite size thing. Yeah. It'll load up any other mobile mobile games for
you. Get your pack Man two fifty six on. No, I haven't.
I just got that downloaded, you have, I haven't littered up yet.
It's good, it's I'm liking it, but it's it's not hitting me
as hard as Cross the Road did when that first hit, And in fact,
they went and added a free pac Man mode to Cross the Road that
might actually be better than Wow, I need that. I need to see
where it's you're still hopping but you're pac Man, and like there are power
pellets and all the cars are replaced with ghosts so you can eat cars.
Okay, alright that mode and cars. Yeah, I know you do,
so that's uh, that's pretty neat. It has a separate leader one that's
weird thing to stick in there. Yeah, it's it's like promotional for Pacman
two. Yes, sure, but yeah. I downloaded the pac Man two
ft six before I knew who made it and started playing it, and I
was like, fucking come on, Namco, are you serious? I had
a tweet half written, and then somebody happened to tweet right before I posted
it about the fact that it was actually made by the Crossing Road, because
like the lineage is like the you know, the stylistic touches, and even
just the straight up gameplay format like hard. Yeah, it's it's absolutely that.
It just got me thinking, like, there are plenty of other arcade
games you could just do that too, Yeah, how many of them didn't?
Well, it wouldn't have to be named code games. No, No,
it definitely wouldn't be What would you do with Dick, Doug, Dick
forever, just keep going down. Okay, you know, it becomes like
a more of a mister Driller type experience at that point. But if you
were digging and dealing with pukas and five gars and dropping rocks and yeah,
then then yeah, that's probably how I would do that. Yeah. Are
you still playing much of this back? Man? Yeah? Well, I'm
I'm going real light on it, and I'm playing it here and there.
I'm not I'm not like great at it. Yeah. I fired it up
today for the first time in like four or five days. But yeah,
I'm I'm enjoying it. I think it's I think it's pretty well made.
But there are some parts of it where like some of the ghost placements occasionally
just feels like, well, this is actually unfair. Some of it feels
very chea. Yeah, okay, well, I'm actually kind of screwed here
because of the way this is gone. The pink ghosts, like I do
like that the ghosts have different behaviors correspond to their colors. Yeah, or
that you know, you can at least remember like, Okay, the pink
guys are the ones who are gonna follow me when I crossed their line of
sight right right, or they'll be ones that just you're gonna go in a
circle, right. I was kind of go back and forth because there were
no behavior differences in original packs. A. Yeah, yeah, I believe
Red Ghost kind of is the chaser. I never knew that there's there's bashful,
but yeah, like there have been some cases, especially when you're playing
the actual mode, not the truly free one, but the one where you're
spending credits on each run for power ups and stuff. Yeah, like I
got sandwiched between two Ghosts where I couldn't even see one of them coming until
I'm already committed to go in that way, like ten seconds into my run,
and it's like, oh, there's a fucking credit down the drain.
It's it is way more free to play than Cross the Road was. Yeah,
and like you could spend fourteen dollars on that game if you really wanted
to, like right off the batin well, no, right up, not
right off the bat Well, it doesn't even expose the ulimited credit option until
you run out of credits. Yeah, one of them. I'll never run
out of credits. That's kind of how I've been playing. I just haven't
played that. I haven't either. One of the developers said they're very tweeted
at me and said they were going to, uh it sounded like they're going
to add an option to just buy that buy your way out of the credit
system right off the bat at some point. But I mean, what's that.
You know, it's like, hey, we'll surface this thing sooner rather
than later. Like that's that's not a meaningful change. Like eight dollars is
the part that's kind of shitty. Eight dollars is a lot. Yeah,
just turn that thing off like maybe five. It's five for the coin DOBB
look right, is it really? Yeah? Yeah, you're right, Yeah,
you're yeah totally. Uh that's uh. I don't know. I like
it, but maybe not that much. Yeah, Like I like it enough
to burn through most of the credits I have and then maybe put it down.
So yeah, across the road add ons pretty good. I just played
it. Yeah, yeah, verified, it's free. Yeah, although you
had to probably road that's a hell. You have to go purchase. You
have to go quote buy it, which might mean that they can charge money
for it at some point. So if you're all interesting that you should probably
go get it. Now in case they make it. Yeah. Yeah,
this this one leans a little more towards the freak to play stuff, and
I would like. But I still think those guys make really interesting games in
the mobile format. I think they're good at turning arcade games into endless runners.
Yes that more specifically, Yeah, I think that. And I like
their visual style that they do it. And so you like the music,
and there's a lot of good presentational stuff in pac Man and Cross the Road
that you're both really solid totally. I also watch you Dan play a MOBI
right, that's right gone? Have you gone back to it since then?
Real fun? I tried to get him to play with me, but oh
he's done. Starting doubt his commitment. Yeah that sucks. If you know,
if he had just bought that fucking Rainer skin, he would be all
in. I know, he would have it, he would have an investment.
Yeah, I mean you should probably just buy the Rainer skin for him
to just send him off the pier. I wonder if he's still lugged in
on that PC over there, should totally go do it. Yeah, so
I'd buy that with my credit card. I'd do it. Uh. Yeah,
that game's fun. Here's the storm. He surprised me with it,
like he of it earn. Yeah, honest shot so shocking a little in
an interval of self awareness on his part. Yeah, he tried that game.
I've recorded a couple of videos of him attempting mobay if I've heard tell
Yeah, and he was in a troll mode involved. I feel like,
as someone who has attempted to play a Moba before, it's not even really
about a troll mode. It's it's more about like this holds very little appeal.
But when he's you can kind of well, like he's put on acts.
He knows what he's doing. Yeah, or does he? I actually
don't know. Sometimes Yeah, he mostly knows. Maybe it's instinctual. Yeah,
that we mock what we don't understand. For true, it's very true.
Jason, Hi, how are you doing doing pretty good? Man?
Yeah, I haven't really branched out into any new games. We've had games
too. We've had the in laws like in for the last week or so
so that Yeah, we've been going out every night for dinner and stuff.
Party but yeah, within laws and seriously and laws and a pregnant wife,
that sounds like a party. Those folks can drink. I mean, not
to preg that wife, but yeah those yeah yeah, they get drunk.
Yeah yeah, it's pretty fun alright. But no, in between that,
man, I've been still still playing that Rocket League said, yeah, level
thirty veteran. Wow, holy shit, man, I don't think I'm even
a twenty ye I that's impressive. And I got my platinum. You did,
yeah, I did. Did you buy the DLC? I did?
Oh immediately, Yeah, like yeah, and I also bought it on Steam
as well. What was the deal? delC is just like a two new
cars, a couple of new wheels, a bunch of new head gear and
stuff at a new stage head gear. Yeah, and like Rocket Trail,
you know what stages stage is free? That's right. Yeah, because there
was a patch just before I DLC with the stage came out and some of
the like the sorry items, which is kind of funny and it's I love
that they're like so aware they were like this, and then it's all from
you know, because they had a really rocky launch. You know, overs
were just dead still a little rocky here and there. I'm once in a
while, like dude, I don't have a great time with it. I
still I run into a problem a lot of like it it's like it doesn't
fully connect with the server or something so that I don't see my car,
I don't see my spectative until like the initials, Like connecting to the servers
is still pretty pretty shaky for me, Like the way you there, like
like it'll it'll, it'll lag behind, and it won't fully connect you until
the kickoff has started and barely have time to get ready to kickoff. Yeah,
if they would just like you know, get everybody in the game five
second timer, I think that would that that would help ut Yeah, that
would be ideal. But no. I also watched so the MLGH. A
couple of the guys over there are big fans of Rocket League and they really
want to see like the e sports potential of this, so as like a
passion project, they decided to throw a little tournament with some of the like
well known players. And I watched the finals of that, and the shit
is amazing and it's humbling, and I absolutely urged anyone to go watch the
finals of that game. It's fucking awesome. That sounds cool. Yeah,
ending is the spectator mode they added that and then last past that's that's a
little weird too, So like, for example, with the MLG stuff,
you know, they were just in there as a spector trying to do the
camera stuff. But but whenever you switch perspective, there's like a big radial
wheel that pops up in the middle of the screen and you've got to like
scroll to whomever you want to see. But yeah, they give you some
some good controls with that, I guess. So if you just wanted to
do like, uh, you know, just like a free roam cam,
I think that might be the best. But otherwise you can switch to other
people's perspectives, and yeah, it's a neat little addition. So if you
know, people do want to stream that stuff with teams, that ship's out
there. But yeah, games, Yeah, consuming the hell out of my
free time. Wow, I'm impressed that you're sticking with it that hard.
I'm away from the Platinum. It's it's definitely one of those you know,
I just just one more game, you know, and then it's a couple
of hours later, Yeah, finding myself with sleeplessening order. I assume they
probably have a lot more dealc in the works, as many copies as there
are back when it became a PlayStation Plus game, and kind of was was
taken on that they that that caused them to kind of revisit what their DLC
plans were going to be in to get a little more aggressive on that end,
because you know they're going to be giving away the game for kind of
nothing. So I assume they have plenty more Rocket League Canyon. Yes,
yes, don't joke, man, I mean, I don't know if you
guys played the original game, super Vaticans. That's also I pulled up some
footage of it after Rocket League got big, and it looks like the same
thing for the most car yea, the same game. They had a lot
of stages, you know, with some verticality to it, you know,
like hills and ramps and shit like that, which would totally change the dynamic
of this game. I don't know if it would be like as accessible now,
but yeah, it'd be cool to see some of that stuff maybe get
out there as like alternate modes or side stuff. Absolutely, so, I
still think they'll, you know, they'll run into a situation where like,
you know, if they split the user base with too many different options,
you know, into too many different hoppers, and then then that could be
detrimental after the like once the game is kind of died down a little bit,
a little bit like a stunt mode and your car has wings, ok,
and you can deploy them. It sounds good. Yeah, okay,
all right, sure, yeah? I mean then how about like garage where
you can stick like springs on your car and like extra engines. Okay,
I think build your car entirely out of engines. Uh huh. I think
actually, actually think it would be cool if they just like did kind of
spinoffs of this or something where it's like, hey, you know, it's
the cars from Rocket League, but it's in this completely different game, but
now it's a racing game. Now it's this like kind of just and actually
released those as different products. You know. I think that would be kind
of neat. That would be good stuff. For sure. I need to
get that last trophy and then I might take a break, but don't break.
I'll keep going. It must have taken you a while to get that
five one. No, it finally just popped up really yep, because like
yeah, after the first like you know, big Patch, you know they
said accurately tracking that stuff and it just came up. Yeah, eventually,
like oh, shit, that's right. I was going for the platinum and
then yeah, the last one actually set up the break shot one, which
is funny that I did you did you game that one? Yeah, game
to that one, But it's funny like after that, I had like two
or three of them, like and because they they tracked that stat also and
I have the same thing happened with me. I've got like three of them.
No, but yeah, they just happened naturally after that. Yeah,
of course, anybody who've used like you know, the screen cap of why
Platinum is like that guy was clearly game in the system. Fucking scheeter.
You can't cheat. I did you got the you got the TIS Like,
there's no Yeah, they let you get the trophy by yourself. They should
have. They should have put more limits and how you get the trophies if
they wanted. Yeah, true to matter. But yeah, they've got a
new trophies with the the DALC as well. Uh and I think yeah,
but yeah, the pat right before that too. I think there was a
couple of trops. It's weird. Yeah, there's like a section on the
trophy view for the new map. Yeah, like as a piece of DALC,
Like there's like three trophies just attached to that map, which is kind
of crazy, man, I said her playing TV two, and I've never
really done that very much, and I think I preferred that mode the best.
Yeah. Yeah, three v three, you know you've got you know,
somebody up front on on goal, you got somebody kind of mid doing
sweeps, and then you got a goalie that pretty much sits back there for
the most part. Yeah, if everybody's kind of playing there the positions.
But in TV two, man, you really have to you know, pick
and shoes when you come out of that goal, so it's even more of
a risk reward. I did. I did a little TV two over the
weekend, and you're totally right, Like in three v three there are enough
cars on the road, on the road on the field that if they have
a strong defense, it can it can be almost impenetrable, you know,
like even when you've got good shots lined up there there all the time.
But yeah, but you're right with with TV two, like they are clear
of the goal pretty often. Yeah, way more interaction with that. You
get a lot of clean shots. I do four before all the time,
and you would think that that's super hectic, but it actually can be really
boring, and frequently, you know, we'll either come down to like one
or two goals or overtime, but there's always somebody in the goal. So
we've actually kind of had to resort to getting aggressive and knocking people like goalies
out of the goal just so we can get some I've come up. I've
come up against a few teams for sure, where a key strategy is let's
just drive at them the top speed and you know it's it's it's actually valid.
Yeah, it's it's a mechanic in the game. It's frustrating a ship
though, when they do it to you over and over. I found that
I'm super bad at getting pop up ball and especially if I'm prett close to
underneath head, so I'll take it off ball cam and i will aim for
the nearest motherfucker's game that I was just screw with everybody. They can't have
the balls, yep, if you can't. If you can't have the ball,
they can't either slide tackle. Yeah. Yeah, I'm just really surprised,
like, you know, how much strategy goes, Like how deep this
game is it? Yeah? Yeah, I love a surprise hit of the
summer yeah, seriously, for sure, I had to get into it this
much. Yeah, absolutely, very well placed, Yes for sure. Yeah,
nothing happening at that time. I played a couple of things. I
am deep into until Dawn. Yeah on the PlayStation four. I'm really interested.
Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna throw it your way when I'm
done, because I want I want to hear other people's I like, I
want to talk to other people about how this game went for them, because
they're like multiple paths, multiple directions, multiple endings. There's so many different
ways that you can get it's crazy. Like I am continually overwhelmed by how
many things seemed to be changing or can change based on the stuff I'm doing
and the things I'm finding and like choices I'm making, and like it seems
overwhelming the number of like variables and possibilities. Yeah. One of the key
terms that they use then that it's called the butterfly effects. Yeah, so
like it's a little those like the butterfly effect system, right, but I
think it's the like kind of indicative is that you know, you can actually
have an impact in your choices. So some So we ran the Quicklick today
and I was looking at some of the comments, and people were saying,
like that moment toward the end where I barely saved myself with that baseball bat,
like they were saying that I wouldn't have had that option, like the
prompt wouldn't have popped up if I hadn't found it a couple of chapters before.
Remember when I said, like, yeah, I walked up to it
and picked it up, and it was just a goofy little like like oh,
she was like threatening her friend with the bat or whatever. But by
doing that little moment two or three chapters previously, that's what allowed me to
access it later on. So it didn't that you know when that happened,
when you kind of you know, you were messing around with that bat,
did it stand out to you like did they have like a little butterfly there
was? Well I can't remember if it pop that because they want it to
be complete so subtle. Yeah, I don't. I should have gone into
the options to see if you could turn that butterfly off like they do the
telltale thing in this game of like popping up like there's a symbol that possible
will remember yeah, like yes, exactly, like you just did something that'll
change something later. By the way, if people don't know, this is
a PS four Oh yeah, heavy heavy rain style, yes, heavy flick,
yes, this is this is heavy rain. This is basically heavy Rain
meets Friday the thirteenth. Yeah, Like it's it's that style of game.
It's very much hands off adventure gamey with quick time events. And this was
originally coming to PS three or did it come No, no, no,
no, no, they have they announced it. I went back and looked
at old footage. Actually they announced it for PS three as a move game.
It wasn't the first person back then. I don't remember. I'm not
sure that's very possible first person. And there are definitely still some remnants of
move style controls in this, like the thing where you have to hold your
controller perfectly still, yeah, to not get noticed and stuff. That was
pretty cool. That was cool. Yeah, But they handled smartly, like
the quick time events are used well, like it is as interactive as it
needs to be, like it's you're you're here for the story to like watch
it seemed like a college heavy rain combat sequences. I guess you know where
you know. It was a cute event you would have to like hold the
button, but you'd have to aim at something occasionally, you'll have to aim
a radical at a thing in a very short period of time and stuff like
that. But yeah, it seems to be handled really well. Yeah,
but it's very much a chooser in adventure. Uh of just you know,
dumb ass twenty year old getting drunk in the woods and then getting solved by
a man killer. Yeah. Really good face models. Yeah, but yeah
they're all they're all modeled after the actors, like Peter Storm are is in
it, Hayden Pantasiery, yes about her. People actually in the comments were
recognizing, like there's a guy from Agents of Shield in it, like they
had a bunch of others like kind of that's very possible, Like it sounds
like yep, yep, it's him playing Big Boss. Actually it's a weird
crossover, right, Yeah, it sounds like most of the actors are known
to some degree in this. Yeah, there's somebody kind of a scare character,
like somebody from Shameless. Uh yeah show on the showtime was it?
I think, yes, that's right anyway, but she looks familiar, Yeah
it is, yeah, totally. It didn't make the best first impression,
like it's there are parts of it that are super awkward, like kind of
the teen drama of romancey stuff at the beginning is eye rolling, but not
in the way you want it to be, you know, like it's not
actually just cheesy. It's more uncanny valley like this isn't you're not really selling
this very well, but it's still it still grabs ahold of you, Like
the deeper end you get, the more you like. All the characters run
together at first, but then you start to actually kind of differentiate them.
But yes, there is that there's a lot of splitting up a poorly right
one. One really weird thing that I noticed is that there's like a relationship
and almost like stat yeah that I have to wonder how much of that stuff
is actually meaningful, like links with people. Yeah, Like basically all right,
so like you play as the it's eight kids in the woods or in
this cabin, and you play as all of them at different time. Time
is dictated by the story and any like whoever you're controlling. You can go
to a status screen and you have this huge list of character traits and like
a bar for each other character in the game, and like kind of what
your relationship is with him and you can actually sure likes you. Basically,
is there one for the not for the killer? Uh, I don't even
know who the killer is? Like apparently people have been saying like even the
nature of who the killer is can change less. How can that be a
spoiler when like there is no true answer to that, you know, like
school, Like I suspect that even the way the killer looks like he's in
a disguise or a mask or whatever, but like the appearance of the killer
I think was influenced by choices and like answers I gave previously. Yeah,
it's it's nuts. I would expect the relationship thing to come into play when
you're like there's two of you and you're trying to like convince someone to go
with you and then they're like, noah, man, I'm not going to
go with you. It could definitely dictate like what kind of responses you have
available to you or something like a pivotal moment. But I mean, you're
never going to pop into that screen and look at your bar and use that
as a no. But it's nice you know that that stuff's being consideration.
It seems like it is being tracked there for sure, and yeah, like
a character that she didn't die, but when playing at home, she got
caught by the killer at the end of a chapter and then we readd that
on the quick look, and like I assumed, I assumed that had to
be written into the story, and it's like, yeah, of course,
no matter what I do here, she's screwed. Yeah, that was one
of my biggest grapes I think in like heavy rain, right, like the
illusion of choice. That's like, you know, sure, you've got all
of these choices up until this point, but you know at the end of
the cut scene, as it were still the same, they're all going to
loop back around to the same inevitability, right, And yeah, we did
see a little bit of that, and yeah, look, but there there
were enough where I don't know, there were as many instances where it was
completely different, right, Like yeah, like I totally got her safely out
of that encounter at the end of that chapter. And like with that save
file, which is on USB stick somewhere, and I would kind of like
to load it back up later and see what it does, Like she's still
free and kind of on the run, as opposed to my main save where
she's being held captive. People. People were saying in the quick look comments
that it is possible, like there is such a thing as like a perfect
play through that game and you can actually save everybody ever really, which seems
insane because I am nowhere close to that. You have to get your glactic
readiness up. Well, I guess I should be download the Companion appen.
Yeah, putt a few dollars into that thing's a little bit. Yeah,
it goes like it takes a couple of chapters to really get going, but
then it just fucking gets grim and grows and gnarly, and people are dying
like crazy, Like they're dropping like flies in my game now, like half
of them are dead already and the other half are in questionable predicaments? Are
they quality? Gory kills? Pretty bad? Alright? That one you saw
in the video, well you didn't see the full thing. It was a
little flashback to it, but it's it's pretty graphic. I like a little
camp in my horse. There's there's there. Yeah, but yeah, I
don't like the sauce stuff so much. It's not I've never seen any of
the saw stuff, but like it doesn't it doesn't revel in the like pain
and suffering so much. Like there's definitely a lot of like viscera. You
know, it's like, oh wow, that's really totally that guy's guts out
cool. But they don't dwell on it, you know. It seems it
seems like just enough. Yeah, it seems like it's yeah, borrowing a
couple different tones from different horror movie. It's it's it's almost quite sure where
it's it's mostly just schlocky teen horror. Like I'm all for that. How
dare your kids go have sex in the woods? You're gonna die? All
type stuff. That's the best I think I said it on the quick.
Look, it's like I've raised my son, like I told them about not
the birds and the bees, but it's like premarital sex, drinking underage,
it's gonna get your ass killed by a slasher. Yeah, we watched Halloween
when he was like a fifteen or sixteen guy and the hockey mask and or
a red and green sweater is gonna show up. This is this is what's
gonna happen. Yeah. Yeah, that game is is really fascinating and I
can't wait to hear how other people's playthroughs play out, and like kind of
like the super cut of all the things that can happen in a YouTube video
or whatever's gonna be really interesting to see. Yeah, it's it seems like
a reasonable length, Like it seems like it's eight or ten hours for one
playthrough, for just one play through. It seems that way. Yeah,
but it seem like the sort of thing that you would think about playing a
second thing. I absolutely I'm gonna let Jason play through it after me,
but I would totally like to mess with it some more after that and like
try some stuff because yeah, like just or or again, just go online
and like look at a bunch of the different possible outcomes because so many things
can change. I like to break those games like as much as at least.
Yeah, like you kind of you kind of want to see what makes
them tick, right and like what what kind of things can happen? Uh,
So it's it's really interesting for for that reason. And then no one
else. Uh if you guys play any volume, no, I have no,
no nobody do you know what it is? It's an overhead stealth game.
Yeah, I just told you what it is. Kind of it kind
of feels like a throwback in some ways, you know, like to like
the perspective is basically mat of your solid one, right, you know it's
it's that. Yeah, that's my understanding is that that's all very deliberate.
I have to imagine that was although it doesn't quite go all the way,
like when you lean up against the wall, it doesn't swing the camera down
to see around the wall, be smuggling cigarettes in your stomach. After I've
seen so far, it's got a it's got a super it's got a super
clean like VR ish kind of esthetic to it. It's a VR mission.
It kind of is it basically looks out Yeah, like it. You're you're
literally running simulations every time you do a mission, uh, and like it.
It almost has like a PlayStation one kind of vibe to it in terms
of like it's got a flat shaded kind of looked to it. You know,
everything's a lot of primary colors or just flat colors rather like the polygons
all kind of fly in and form the level when you start a level,
Like it's just got like a mid nineties sensibility in some in some sense cool.
Yeah, I intend to play it. I just haven't gotten around to
it, uh, and it's you know, it's got kind of all the
standard like overhead stealth puzzle, tropes of vision cones and like kind of sound
RADII, you know, like you make a sound, you see how far
it goes and who can hear it and stuff like that. There's like gadgets
to pick up and throw and do different stuff with. I haven't gotten I'm
about a like a tenth of the way through. There's like one hundred story
levels. So what is it called volume? I mean there's a story to
it, Like I believe when I've picked up so far, a volume is
an AI in this world like you're you're you're in a computer, not exactly
kind of you're you're in You're in future dystopian England. And it seems like
nineteen eighty four has come to pass or something like where does arsenal gear figure
into this? Oh, I haven't gotten that far yet. I'll tell you
when I get strut. A big shell is just them trying to re enact
the events of So I haven't pulled this up yet, but it has a
level editor and somebody already made the first area, the dock of metal gar
Solid, which I have to assume is basically the Super Mario Brothers one one
of this genre now so as someone made one one in volume Okay, yes
that that is yet to come, sure, but any combat at all,
I there's there are trophies for like stunning enemies. I haven't gotten to that
point yet, but it seems like you'll be able to knock them out temporarily.
But it's neat. I like it. If you're into like stealth as
puzzle game type stuff. It's not less they're like completely fucking wacky metal gear.
I don't really, I mean, this is very much more about puzzling
your way through the you know, like there are part times on all the
levels. It's that kind of is the sort of thing where like, if
you really liked the VR missions and metal gear, this is gonna be like
ideal for you. That seems like from what I can recollect about the VR
missions, Yes, like those were just about the stealth, right, Yeah,
pretty much. Can you equip an M sixty so far? Can you
take creepy pictures of a radio operator? I hope? So what happens if
you plug a US your controller into the other USB port? I don't know,
I'm too busy throwing magazines all over the floor. Let's try that,
but I'll give it a shot. Yeah, that game is neat. Does
it come up and talk about other apps you have installed yet? That would
be pretty good though, So I don't know. And the more I think
about it, the more I think, like, hey, you know what
I actually didn't like the VR missions is like not really about the game play.
I enjoyed the stealth in the first JS and this kind of scratches that
itch. Yeah, yeah, uh, that's kind of all I've been playing.
Everybody's got anything else? If not, I've been I've been fooling around
with Mario Maker. We'll have more to say about yeah, better kind of
down the road. We were kind of intentionally not approaching that yet because like,
you still can't quite talk about everything, right, It's I can,
yeah exactly. It's it's kind of in a in a preview mode, so
let me preview things without giving you my impressions of if they're good or not.
Is that like it's a it's a weird situation. Is that different from
what's going to be the case with the retail release where things are gonna unlock
over time? No things a time in this simulating that for you now,
No, I simulated it by adjusting the clock. Yeah, for nine days
of fake time, you ran all of the stuff you ran the SSS I
did, yeah, and uh yeah no, I unlocked kind of the five
rows of tools and made them on made some levels and fooled around. We
played a bit of it on UPF. We've got a quick look in the
can that actually, because of what's in it, it can't run until the
game is on shells, so reviews will hit before that. But the video
restrictions still apply for some stuff. Classic Into No Embargo, right, Yeah,
it's just like all right sure, uh so, yeah, it's it's
there are a lot of really neat things in that game, and I am
I am enjoying my time with it. Yeah, it seems exceptionally well made.
More about it and such, but but yeah, the stuff you should
on UPF. It seems like it's got that Classic Into no attention to detailed
kind of just user interface like super intuitive, yeah, supernatural to look at
and like immediately understand how everything's put together. I don't want, I don't
want to tell you what I think about it. Yeah, but I'm looking
forward to playing some more an entirely objective approach both. Yeah, I would
like to make some more stuff. And you know, I'm at this point
like the version I'm playing will not be those levels will not live past September
elevenths so, but there's a bunch of nintended created stuff that I'm sure that
there will be available. Yeah. So so basically, like I want to,
I'm just kind of fooling around with the tools to get a good handle
on them, and then you know, when when the game is out for
real, z's that's when I want to start to really try to make some
stuff and upload it and see if people like it. I'm just curious.
I wonder what types of levels will do well. Yeah in that environment.
If it's just gonna be like gimmicky, weird stuff, or it's gonna be
like, hey, this level is a lot like a regular like this would
fit in a real Super Mario Brothers game, like if if you could,
if if people would respond to that or not, I don't know. I
have to imagine it's going to be just a flood of pretty basic stuff for
the first week or two that are just like impossibly hard or auto scrolling,
auto playing levels, But I want to see stuff like six months after release.
Yeah, you know, like when only the most dedicated people have stuck
around. Like what kind of insane masterpieces are people going to come up with?
Yeah? Like, do you feel like, do you feel like the
tools are there to break the Mario mold? Yeah? Well could you make
things that are This is a hard question to ask because I don't even know
what the answer to this question would be. You will always control like Mario.
Yeah, you know you're not gonna make a cart racing game, and
here you're gonna you know, you know, you're not gonna make a shooter.
It doesn't have that level of well, yeah, you can kind of
make a shooter r but it doesn't have like that level of fucking with the
gameplay itself. It's really just it's a tile based editor. You drop in
items from the Mario universe. You can interact with them and adjust them in
ways that you couldn't do in the original games, and that creates some really
interesting opportunities for doing things that have never been seen in a previous Mario.
Sure. Yeah, yeah, you know, obviously it's not a little big
planet. People aren't going to be making geometry wars in there and stuff like
that. Right, But but also the platforming is top fucking not because it
plays like Mario games, you know, So it's like it's it's a that's
a pretty fair trade. I think, Oh yeah, no, I'm not
saying that's a knock against it. I just I just I can't wait to
see how out there some of the stuff gets. Yeah, definitely what kind
of really surprising things people turn out, because because you know they will,
even just watching you, Jeff, make you know, some rudimentary levels like
it, or play ones that I guess other people had made, or even
the Nintendo ones like it. It made me have a lot more respect for
the design of the older Mario games, Like I think I took for granted
a lot of like what was really smart about those levels because it's very very
easy to make a lame level or one that like like you start to once
you start building your own level, you start to see the uh, the
sentiments that the Mario designers it's had for their life. It's the thing,
like the rules set there they had, don't put something in every single block.
That's the thing that level creators will have to learn at some point if
they want to make things that like reflect original Super Mario Brothers, because the
tendency is like, well, I'm just gonna put coins in everything, Like
no, no, don't you want people to like hunt around for stuff blocks
you don't play exactly. So yeah, like like learning when to ease off
the pedal and not just be like, oh, let's throw in more turtles,
like you know, just you need to have some restraint, yes,
uh, And and that I think will be the important thing. Right now,
people are just you know, the reviewers and stuff that I have,
people that have access to whatever this version is are just going fucking crazy and
just feeling the levels full of all kinds of shit and like some of them
are really hard, some of them are super easy, but like flashy.
I want to see like that actual like like try to make real ones.
Try think those have some merit, Like those will be fun for a little
bit. But I think Brad's right, like six months down the road,
people are going to tire of those things and what will be left will be
the wheat. Yeah, I think so we'll see it's reviewers are talentless fucking
hacks. No, they're not game designers. That's when we'll the first true
Mario Artiste emerge. Do you think that game changed in scope after E three?
I don't know. Do you mean this C three or the or last
one before when they first showed that first little bit, and it's like a
quarter of a game, right, there's just an idea, that's right.
You know, they didn't show that much to the and the levels were super
tiny. Yeah, and didn't They didn't really have a firm handle the people
answering questions, which of course why would they. They didn't really have a
firm handle on what the final project was either. So it was this thing
where you just look at it like this could be the most incredible thing ever,
or it could be like the ultimate heartbreaker Sad Factory where you get to
make like half the marial level you'd like to make. Be pretty down with
the sad factories. Yeah, I'm a worker. That's that's my level.
That's my level, Sad Factory. I'm glad that thing seems cool. I
mean, not the you know, I mean that's just my assumption. It's
not like you haven't you didn't render any opinion whatsoever. But I saw it's
also amazing just by how like intuitive and like fun. The interface is for
making stuff, yeah, like the whole like shake to modify and stuff like
that. Just simple little nintendoses like the sound effects. You know, when
you're drawing in stuff, it'll say in like this weird robotic voice, what
you're drawing in or what you're bringing in. Its little stuff like that.
Yeah, really charming, lots of attention to details stuff. They produced that
product in a Nintendo likeway, Yes they did. I'm good on them all
right, video games they're still pretty cool with video games discussed. Now it's
time to talk about news about video games. Now it's time to get into
video game disgust news about video games. No, here are the headlines.
You've got some good news for a change, you know, I'm not that
doesn't sound encouraging. The first story is the first story about is about Nintendo,
and iust I am. Let me tell you why I'm barred by the
terms of the embargo from expressing an opinion on this. Next fantastic about Nintendo.
Uh, let's let's continue to do the NX speculation dance. Okay,
Uh, they filed a patent. I guess they filed It looks like back
in February. But they just came to light this past week for a device
or console without an optical drive, so like a Super Nintendo, like a
three D S. Yeah, yes, it just is just a Super Nintendo.
Liken you. They're putting it back out finally next year. It's the
it's the the updated console RF only, yes, or composite only or whatever
they stripped out of that thing. The second topic of the second SNASS apparently
like yeah, and didn't take that custom like multi out thing or whatever.
Doing that fucking sucks. Yeah, that's terrible. I don't know what the
because it was they were making it cheaper. There was no s video option
on that first SNSs was there because it used a custom It was a customed
Nintendo connector right yeah, if you could, you could get some like SKRT
type right right, yeah, go on with that scart maybe if you live
in Europe and are a crazy person, which if you live in Europe,
chances obviously scart. It's fun to say it is in kind of a sneering
way. Start does that how it's supposed to be pronounced? I was,
I don't know, I don't know, like video get Danny up here.
It's cool looking cable. Yes would yeah, total, that's frightening. So
you know, who's to say what this thing is if it's actually the NX,
if it's just a random pattern. The third filing just in case,
who can say it does have some kind of memory card slot on it.
It's got like a block diagram of how this unit would theoretically work with.
You know, here's a processor, here's a processor, and then here's some
kind of memory card. The two game programs on it, two huh,
but one could be OS level stuff. It's it's you know, you read
through kind of the separate points of the pattern. And what if one was
the mobile game and one was the TV game? What if one was a
game that you'd play on the handheld version of this device? That's what I
mean. Yeah, okay when you say when you say mobile, okay,
phones every time I should watch my language. Yeah, the portable, Yes,
if one was the portable version of a game and handheld even yes,
the handheld and then the other version phones are indeed both portable and handheld.
That is, those words do not mean the same as mobile. And a
third one is your UMD version of Triple X. Oh yeah, every game
will ship with that and preinstalled. Yeah, just in case, because you
never want to be without it. Yeah, you know, I don't know
not much else to say about this thing until or news comes out like this
could amount to nothing, Yeah it is. Did you know just because you're
filing a patent for something doesn't mean it's going to go into production. But
uh, yeah, I guess. I like the drive. I'm trying to
figure out, like reading over it, Like I am no patent lawyer,
but I'm trying to figure out, like what actually differentiates this thing from every
other product that exists that doesn't have an optical drive, you know, like
no optical drive is not enough to go patent something, right, But their
application seems to be around like, yeah, there there's an internal hard drive
for you know, storage of game software and that sort of thing. They
kind of talk a little bit about a controller, uh maybe potentially having a
display unit on it, I believe, and uh, it's got some other
external connectors and it says you would also be able to hook external storage up
to this thing. Yeah, or like a Sony optical drive perhaps drive possible
for your copy of Triple X. I just had a great idea for a
patent. How about a toaster? Wait, don't say it out loud without
an optical drive. I'm in hmm, okay, we're gonna be millionaires.
She might be onto something with that. Stupidest shit. Why would you ever
who would buy a toaster with an optical drive? How would I watch Triple
X? It's a good point you're making. Yeah, rip your blue ray?
Okay, all right, rip it to the twister? Which triple X?
Were we talking here? The Diesel State of the Union sequel? I
mean there's multiple that's the one with ice cube, right, and they just
announced it actually just filed a patent for a triple X without then Diesel.
Actually wow, by the way, wow wow wow. So you know they're
really throwing that it was wasn't an ice cube? I believe it was ice
Yes, it was. It was ice cube. Star of Ghosts of Mars.
Yeah, he didn't. He didn't exactly get like cut for that role,
Tod And are we there yet? And are we there yet? Was
that daddy dickcare? That's cute? Is this Schwartzenegger? Isn't that's kindergarten cop?
Okay? I have no idea? All right? Is the world ready
for Yeah, like the consoles were kind of moving in that direction last time
and then pulled back. But I think it's one of those things where like
the presence of uh a memory is some kind of slot to do. It
just says like memory card, which you think of as like, you know,
storage. But this could just be a cartridge, right, So this
could just in fact be a cartridge based system like it could It sounds like
it could be a three DS that hooks into a TV. Yeah, it
sounds basically like the card type things that go into a three DS, right,
and so you know, but so this this doesn't necessarily tell us too
much specific and in terms of specifics about where they're going. This definitely doesn't
doesn't necessarily mean that they're just going to make a thing that doesn't take physical
dip games like that where you couldn't buy the games off a shelf exactly exactly.
So this this could just be like them moving to cartridges instead of you
know, discs. Yeah, that's still don't think we're anywhere near completely digital
format. This generation is not really panned out, like you know, they're
definitely like, I have a healthy digital libraries on both of these on all
three of these consoles almost prefer managing them on the WAU as a suck situation,
sure, because I do not have an external drive hooked up there.
But when you think of so many countries with data caps on their their internet,
yeah it's not there. And speed issues you know here in the US
too, you know, it's just it's not there. You know it's it's
in many cases still like I have some fast motherfucking internet, Sony does not.
Yep, Microsoft has somewhat faster internet. Still there's this even though there's
an almost acceptable but even that's you know who's got good Internet? I bet
I know Gabe Newell. Yeah, that motherfucker stab people to get the fastest
internet in town. We went down to the ESP and pulled a knife on.
He was like, sure, we got the fat pipe. Fucking make
these downloads go for people who can take them fast. You're you're not doing
people preload metal gear. But it's not going to be a problem, right,
And then he pulls the fucking blade out and just like starts shining it
up a little bit. You're not You're not wrong. Steam regularly maxes out
my Internet connection. That shit is no joke. Yes, faster than the
hard drive can write it totally. But yeah, but like Microsoft and Sony
are still not providing a fast enough service to the point where like it'd be
faster for me to usually and in some cases, even when the story is
fucking closed and I have to wait until morning, it would still be faster
for me to go out and buy a physical copy. Yeah, if you're
talking and it's coming down at a crawl, yeah, like you're not playing.
Like even I tried to download that Black Ops three beta, which was
only like twelve gigs, and that thing took four hours on five that took
overnight. Yeah, it was only on PS four. That was an overnight
in rest mode even you know, after you talked about your ship downloads faster
and rest mode seam But I don't know. I let it download with it
on for a while. You're gonna wrap a towel around. Yes, you
also also turn down upside down? Yeah, then then it should it up.
Did you put the spring in the disc drive? Well? I used
a paper clip. Okay, all right, but hopefully that works just as
well. I don't know. I just soldered an internet chip into mind so
I don't have to deal with this paper clip or any of this other stuff.
Yeah, put it, put a blast processor in there. I put
in the bleam disc. First it out and then down. Everything downloads fast.
I'll do it. Yeah, I mean, you know, it removes
the option of the digital purchase as an impulse by you know, you can't
just be like, I'm gonna buy this and start playing it in ten minutes
and all of their like, hey, it installed the bare minimum and now
you can start playing. Is a fucking bunch of horseship. Such a joke
like Gears pops up and says you can play at like eight percent or something
like that, But then you launch it and it says you can prioritize single
player or multiplayer here if you like, and little download in that order,
but you still can't actually play anything. Yep, the Isolation. Let me
launch it, and it was not ready to be launched. Yeah. Yeah.
That. There's plenty of games like GT five on the new consoles is
the most extreme example of that because it installs super quick or let's you launch
super quick, but it's literally just installing it installer, because as soon as
you booted up, it has to install the entire game before you can start
playing. Yeah, yeah, because Destiny patches in game and out of the
game, right, Destiny has to be fully installed, like like so many
developers have just straight up subverted that system or or I kind of fulfilled the
letter of the law, but not the spirit. But I wonder if,
like it is even feasible, like if that thing was just a pipe dream
from the start its developer, you're looking at it going like this is not
reasonable for the type of game we're making and the way we structure our data,
So like, what why That's entirely possible. That's probably right. It
could just be that this whole feature was a non starter to begin with.
But that works great for Immortal Combat X on the piece. Yeah, they
really killed it on that one, for sure. Killed a lot of things,
killed some people's dreams with that thing. Yeah. Uh, Internet should
be faster across the board. That's platform I can get behind. Whoa,
whoa, you're taking bold fucking stent download speeds and no one's gonna watch what
you're downloading. I'm gonna build a wall around this Internet. I don't that
doesn't really work though, That's the exact opposite. Yeah, Yeah, that's
all I had I'm sorry. N X will come out at some point whoa
I know, like, just continue the bold proclamation, and at some point
before it comes out we will know the true nature of it. One year
after release, we will see a new skew, new colors. Okay,
I'm calling it right. Okay, at launch, they're gonna have spice orange.
Oh I hope so I that that was the GameCube. Orange was a
great orange. Yeah, yes, that was good. It was. It
wasn't quite in retrospect, disappointed that I was not able to acquire an orange
game cube. Every time I looked at that thing, I thought of Pumpkin
Pie, said, I don't even like pumping Pie. I just like Orange.
Sure reminded me of Fall. When the new games come out, yeah,
put them in your pumpkin and play. Put it in the pumpkin game.
Pumpkin there you go, Yeah, like, why isn't that the commercial?
It's Paul Rudd just shout and put it in the pumpkin. And then
the discs going the pumpkin. I don't wants to get back on top.
Here it is. And then you're playing Super Mario Sunshine and you turn to
Paul Rudd and go, why does this game suck so much? And Paul
Rodd goes man man, It's true, he is an man game. Pumpkin
keeping with theme a fault go on foods. Yeah, fruits, that pumpkin
of fruit? What is that? Yeah, it's got seeds. What is
a fig? The Newton? It's a it's a like a moth breeding or
breeding. I believe wasp guts, and I assume a fig would also qualify
as a fruit. I don't like figs are great, not because I'm worried
about fucking bugs fucking inside of figs, like I could share less. I
enjoy figs, but I just don't like not even a fig Newton. I
don't like pig Newtons. I think they're nearly. I think they're they're they're
heinous, they're honey. I like the filling, just the the cookie outside
or the well to see whatever that the cake man cake, fruit cake.
It's a weird texture from it. Yeah, it's dry and chalky and it
doesn't taste like anything. Yeah, you're right, it does not help.
I'll just eat some Plaine figs, so do it? Jam a bunch of
goat cheese inside him and rappo. Yeah that sounds good. Yeah, that's
crazy that None of that makes me sense. Cheese, meat and fig That
sounds delicious. Cheese, meat and fruit. Cheese and fruit. I guess
I could get cheese and meat. You know, I understand that absolutely,
but all three. Come on, it can be done, all right.
You know what else FIG is? I'll tell you street in Los Angeles.
Oh, yes, disgusting hotel. Actually that's exactly what this thing is named
after. That hotel is great fucking is it? Yeah? Oh you didn't
know. Oh I hate this way more. Now this thing is totally named
after what. There's a new crowd funding platform for video games and it is
called FIG and it is named after that hotel. What. That's what I
read in one of the new stories about it's announced. They could have been
blown smoke, but I assumed I took them at their word. Go on,
it's rather because there's so many weird deals that go on. Is there
two gs? No, it's just just Capital FIG, I believe, not
Figgler, No, YESLR Figgler Friday. Uh. I still haven't quite understood
the ownership here, but a number of prominent UH video game illuminaries are involved
with this thing. On the board of advisors. Tim Schaefer is involved,
Fergus Urkhart Erhart think of Obsidian, Brian Fargo from in Exile. They've got
some some it sounds like some proper venture capital behind this thing. But it's
a new crowdfunding platform for games. Uh, then the big, the big
differentiator is there? Yeah? Yes, indeed he of the trailblazing Kickstart.
And then this is like the CEO of the actual like guy running this is
Justin Bailey who was Double Finds head of bis dev. I think really he
is. Seems like he is left all the fund and is now running this
thing. He's also a really cool code and Metroid Yeah yeah, that's how
committed he is to this thing. Wow, his name is that code.
They're only gonna crowdfund Metroid style games? Is it strictly video game funding?
That seems to be the case so far. They only they launched with a
project, and so far it's the only project they've got. Also, that
project is run by Hero from or wasn't his name Hero from Heroes? Oh?
Yeah, yeah he is. He is. Yes, that guy,
his his game or a game that he has involved with at least, I
should say, is their first project. The big differentiator here is that they
are looking to get actual investors investing in these projects, and in addition to
kind of the standard kickstarter back type, Yeah, you can still back things
that are relatively low buy in and in that case it's backing is still effectively
donating. You know, you're pitching in money assuming you'll get a game,
but it's not necessarily investors are investors. But yes, the investors, so
you're using that word. Yes, you're literally investing. You are expecting a
reprect interesting for your money. Yeah. I mean a lot of kick centers
nowadays have a lot of investment, but they're still try and see pad it
out or get more in there. They're they're mitigating and getting crowd interests there,
but they're still trying to appeal to like individual investors, not necessarily fun
like people. I'm sure they wouldn't turn down a larger investment from a firm
or something like that, but if the terms all made sense, But yeah,
it seems like that they are trying to use what the sec I guess
refers to as accredited investors. Yeah, and the rules around some of the
stuffs have changed relatively recently to to kind of enable this sort of thing.
But it's like, you know, individual people that have a net worth over
a certain number or have a certain amount of money coming in every year can
file to become accredited investor and at that point they can invest in this project
and get a return. But the minimum you have to put into this project
in order to become that is also like it's a thousand dollars. Yeah,
so it's not cheap. So you can't go in and go like, hey,
I've made that much money last year, I'm gonna put twenty bucks into
this thing and see three pennies in five years. You know, like it's
it's sort of you have to put in something that approaches a real amount of
money. Yes, it sounds like looking at the story that Austin wrote that
the sec UH has approved a new sort of investment opportunity that might relax some
of these requirements, it seems like they're head in that direction, which seems
like potentially super dangerous. But you know, like people should be able to
spend their money how they want, right, you know, so so sure,
but none of that stuff has It seems like none of that stuff has
cool as to the point that anybody can just go and put in money and
expect a return. Yet yeah, but these people who are especially accredited and
with a thousand dollars or more can currently yes. Although here I'll read this
from from Austin's story. He did like a kind of a little folk Q
and A to answer some of the weirder questions about this thing. But this
is probably the most interesting part to me. What are investors on fig actually
investing in the game the developer? These are Austin's words, Like I said,
neither figs help page notes that investors will own an interest in a share
of the game's sales. FIG sets up a specific limited liability company which investors
will hold an interest in per game to accomplish this. So, you know,
meaning if it's new property, you're not owning a piece of the IP.
You know, you don't have you don't own a part of the developer,
right, you don't own a part of the developer. You don't have
necessarily any real say in like creative decisions that they make, or you can't
make demands of their direction. You know, like you're sitting at a board
saying, even even if you own this LLC, you would still be kind
of at arm's length. It's not that's that's very much what it sounds like,
like you are, you're buying into the profits from the game, not
necessarily the game itself, but they are still to be able to that money
to you know, invest in the actual development of the game. Right.
That seems to be the case. So it's a weird thing, like it's
very bridging two very different worlds. Yeah, it seems like. Yeah,
and obviously it's got a long ways to go as these sec things. I
wonder if there's like actual genuine I mean, I guess like that's that sweetens
about. You know, you've definitely had some people that have backed kickstarters for
a whole lot of money before, you know, just people that have that
kind of money and they just you know, they want to see something come
to fruition. Maybe they would be a little more likely to do so if
it actually was kind of an investment. And I wonder if at some point,
if it's a tax right off, if like, hey, this game
made no money back, so you lost all that money, I wonder if
that becomes I wonder if you can do something with that from a tax perspective,
Right, I don't know, like, wasn't there wasn't there that moment
that not like famously tweeted to Tim Schaffer about doing Psychonauts two or something like
that. It's just like, let's make it happen or something like that.
Like who knows if this could lead to more things like that? Sure,
uh, but yeah, maybe maybe it loosens the first strings for some of
these you know, higher money people that would you know, normally just get
like some dumb reward on Kickstarter, like, Oh, I got to have
dinner with the team. That's great, but I don't right there, I
got to do a voice in the game, right, Yeah, Like maybe
this is something a little more meaningful that that maybe gets some of those people
on board, Yeah, a little more frequently, I guess. Yeah,
I don't know what the Yeah, maybe some of some of those people that
have that money to invest aren't necessarily like hooked into the video game world as
sure as closely as they could be. And how how much of a pain
in the ass is it to like deal with contract negotiations like what percentage do
you get, you know, when you invest? If it's already if this
thing is acting as a middleman for that, I wonder if the game developers
would be more beholden to actually produce something. I don't know, Like from
from that little snippet I read, it sounds like it seems like it'd be
harder to take the money and run oh as a developers. Yeah, yeah,
definitely. I mean they're setting up this specific middleman company, this specific
limited liability corporation to limit the developer's liability if something goes wrong. So,
I mean they're they're doing that to protect the developer from a lot of different
things, like maybe there's some kind of recourse you would have if a developer
just straight up skated. And they're not letting anyone sign up for this.
This is they're just just anyone come in and launch a project. They they
say that their board of advisors will look over the projects and only approve those
ones that they deem fit. I guess. So it kind of depends on,
right, it sort of depends on how good that team is, I
guess, and all that sort of stuff. You'd like to think that they
would do their due diligence and not pick projects that'll just totally go sideways.
Yeah, I imagine, you know, fig get some cut Oh sure,
Yeah, definitely, Yeah, I would, Yeah, sure, I'm sure
this isn't for nothing here. Yeah. Some of the stuff almost reminds me
a little bit of the way that like, smaller movies are financed these days.
And if you guys pay attention to that stuff at all, what is
that I cannot remember the name of that Alec Baldwin documentary. That's that HBO
did m they know, God damn, it is killing me. The name
is is something weird and it's not coming to mind you if you have to
do, if you have HBO, go you can find it pretty easily.
He's in the thumbnail. It's it's Alec Baldwin and a director whose name is
also escaping me right now. But they go to I believe that they go
to con like the film Festival. Maybe it's Sundance anyway. The point is,
like getting a smaller movie finance these days as a whole lot of meeting
with like heavily moneyed individuals. Not necessarily you're not necessarily talking just a studio,
as you're talking to individual wealthy people who want to put money into things,
creative things. They want to say, I'm a producer, you know,
right exactly, you know and in this case, there's a bunch of
weird shit because as soon as like they're they're hat in hand trying to get
say, five million dollars out of this guy from Saudi Arabia for their movie.
But but he has a bunch of ideas about who he thinks the female
lead in the movie should be, so like in that case, it's a
weird barter of like, well, maybe we'll think about casting that person if
we get your money type stuff. But anyway, that the point is this
seems like this could maybe be a gateway for more private investors like that to
get into game development as opposed to having to ink just deals. Yeah,
like publishers more of a turnkey situation for people, because you know, people
understand movies to a certain extent. Yeah, you know, like like some
of that stuff has gotten out and it's been around long enough that people kind
of understand that kind of push and pull. But yeah, right right,
Yeah, they think they understand enough of it to dump a bunch of money
into it, and then when the movie tanks, they're like, wait,
what, Yeah, you didn't even cast my lead. That would have made
the difference. Whereas with games, you know that that's a little that's still
a little hard to get some insight into. So yeah, do you look
that up. Yeah, it's called Seduced and abandent. That's it, the
thing seduced and abandoned. Yeah, if you're if you're at all interested in
like film production and the wheeling and dealing that goes on behind the scenes,
that that thing is really good. That sounds like a nightmare. It is.
It all seems super sleazy. It's the whole thing feels really sleazy.
Does it seems like the same thing is like when we see games and like
the inner workings of that and go like, how does a game even ever
get kind? Well, this, this in particular is super smoozy because you're
combining like like the glitz of being in the South of France or whatever with
like the all the ego and celebrity that goes along with Holly would and you
know, like in this case it's and giant money. Like it's just gross
in every in every direction in that thing. But like that's obviously that's how
the business works, man. So if you're if you're curious in seeing some
of the inner workings of that, you should check that movie out and who
knows if this will enable some of the same stuff or not, But like
it seems like tentatively you can say, like more more ways to get games
made is better than less, right, Like, who knows knows what this
is going to yield. Example, giving a backer of a game or having
a set up where a backer of a game can get more than like a
fancy calendar or something like that is probably smart, yeah too, or you
know it just yeah, it might encourage bigger investments in smaller projects, because
like, even small games are fucking expensive to make these days. Sure,
so that can't necessarily be a bad thing. I will watch this thing intensely
to see what else comes out of it, Like once they start running more
projects and stuff, I'm really curious to see where this thing goes. I
mean, if you look at the people on the advisory board, one would
expect that all of them would go on to use this service as opposed to
Kickstarter can then they've all have they all I know, an exile and double
fine trying to think what is a Yeah, Pillars sitting in absolutely yeah,
Pillars Fraternity was a Kickstarter. Yeah, all three of those companies are among
the most successful on kickstarters. So I guess it does make sense that they'd
want to break out of that model and try to have a little more control
over it. Interesting times in the game's business. Totally. It's a weird
world. Yeah. Yeah. Are we gonna start saying, Oh, they
have a fig going? Oh? I don't know, I won't they're figuring
it. They're heavy into figging. What No, what I'm just saying.
They're using the site. Oh okay, they get they're big into the fig
see what you mean? Yeah, yeah, stick figuring it. Yeah.
Street fight er five yeah, speaking of figure Yeah, yeah, I don't
know. We didn't check, or I didn't have time to check. I
didn't have time to turn on a PS four before we came up here.
But if I understand correctly, there should be a stress test going on right
now for street Fighter five running as we speak. As we speak, do
you guys know if that actually started, I would assume. So I guess
the street Fighter actually created a Twitter account saying street Fighter five server. It's
like a it's not verified, but it's it's it's official. Check that see
if it's up and running. So they ran one most recently, and it's
funny that they're calling it stress test now and not beta, yeah, which
is essentially what it is. Yeah, well, to be clear, this
it's just a beta for their beta, right. But to be clear,
this does not count as as one of the three official beta periods as far
as I know, it does not. That's that's what this that's what this
says that I'm looking at this. Yeah, this is basically trying to avoid
what happened with that first beta that they had to abort because it was on
fire. Yeah. Oh it's terrible. It's impossible to play the video game.
I get that, like large parts of this will certainly go on to
improve the final product, but at some point the idea that they are running
stress tests to get their beta up and running like must be insanely frustrating.
Yeah, I'm on their insure, and like for the consumer, it gives
the distinct impression that they don't necessarily have their ship together all the way in
a world where like one of the big announcement hooks are coming out of E
three was hate our all new net code to have. I mean, granted,
you know this is this is the match making, It's not purely the
net code, but to have the online experience suck so much ass is not
inspiring confidence in the final product, so to be fair, A couple of
weeks ago, they ran another kind of stealth stress test you've heard about,
like the internal stress test. They kind of got opened up to everybody.
Yeah, like they snuck out there, right. Yeah, it's like on
UPF you were like getting a match every thirty minutes or something that they later
that night. I actually logged in probably about midnight, and it was constant.
It was a constantlo of match working out. Yeah, it was working
out just fine, and they played that's uh yeah, that's that's the other
side of the story. It did not different story. I had one match
that was maybe playable, but I still got in like twenty thirty matches and
I was like all in a row. So so that's being worked down,
it seems. And in this particular stress tess, I guess they're opening up
the borders a little bit, so it's going to be North and South America.
I guess things went pretty well over in Europe. Yeah, they did
that one looks like four days ago. Yeah. I didn't hear about too
many fires. I could be wrong on that, but I mean slowly but
surely, I guess coming along. But you know, then again, it's
like you've got games like Rising Fun or which like Technical Alpha and it's running
great, you know, the net code and everything matchmaking, and they're still
making solid improvements. Well you know, it's it's you know, they've been
consistently like they've improved upon their already world class platform or whatever. Right like,
it's still GGPO, you know, it's kind of the gold standard.
It's also at the games out there, and especially a lot of access games
that have really really good net code. Why why Capcom doesn't want to like
license some of this technology they could certainly license GGPO. I think out there
might standing is that the stuff around GGPO and it's system requirements are very heavy,
okay uh, and that it is kind of storing, like like my
stand up like doing like stuff for like XBLA and stuff like that. You
that used GGPO was that you had to be able to store the entire game
and memory at all times, and that that created, you know, when
you when you had a larger scale game, a kind of real full retail
product, a modern product as opposed to emulating you know, like a CPS
three CPS two game even, you know, like like the memory requirements are
such that GPO becomes it has too much overhead. Uh, that's what I've
heard. I'm no engineer, but yeah, you know, I'm not honestly
away to make it work. Yeah, I would have, since I know
they have used to like modified versions of it, and yeah, yeah,
yeah, it's it's frustrating where there's so many other games that are doing so
much better, you know, uh network wise, Yeah, understandable. I
mean, in Capcom's defense, I would guess that none of those other games
have the same demand that a game Cultree Fighter five does. They're probably right,
And it seems like beta codes were just getting out there left and right
as people were like pre ordering to get the code and then canceling the pre
orders. There's probably a lot of people trying to get into that beta.
Yeah, I can see that. That is it your understanding. Anybody that
has that beta installed already can try to participate in this thing. Yeah,
like if you just fire it up, you should be able to at least
attempt to connect. Yeah, all right, nondiscriminatory. They've been changing like
the versions on it as well, which is kind of going back and forth
on like that you've been checking. Uh yeah, no, like little things
I mean, first and foremost ended like Bertie and Cammy, we're not available
during this last one. But then like some of the combos that that I
had been doing, huh, we're not working interesting and new ones were.
So yeah, they're they're changing up the engine a little bit. I wonder
if they can tweak that stuff on their end without having to push probably local
patch out. That was like, that's how another realm's been doing a lot
of their stuff is they can they can tweak a lot of the math and
a lot of some of the numbers and frames and stuff. Yeah, and
that's kind of why they stagger out Birdie and Camping to begin with, because
they wanted to be able to kind of push a live update over the course
of the weekend, which which did seem to work, I guess, but
interesting stuff. Meanwhile, they patched Ultra Ultra street Fighter four on the PlayStation
four today as well, and they changed PlayStation Registered sign network to PlayStation TM.
So of course, yes, please make sure that all the legal window
dressing and on the branding is correct. Does that game work? Yeah?
They fix it? Yeah, Yeah, it's fine, it's all good.
Now, well that's good. One down, Oh no, all right,
one to go. At least they're taking baby steps, you know. At
least they're not just launching headlong into another full beta and having it break again.
They fell on fell on their face. Man, was yes, So
now they're backing up. It's like, okay, all right, these are
just stress tests, they're internal whatever. Yes, we shall see. Yeah.
Uh. Speaking of games that are out yet, anybody excited for Rainbow
six Siege, I think that game's got potential. Yeah. Uh, it
was one of the things we're playing it at E three. I think I
came out of it, like I came out of one round of that game,
going, man, that's fucking rad. And then they did that closed
alpha or whatever it was, and I played, you know, seven or
eight matches. I haven't win, man, I don't know if I want
to play anymore. Well, how many matches or how many maps were in
that? So that's the thing. It was the same map across all those
matches. So that's that's a big part of it. That wouldn't help.
Well, apparently you be Soft agrees with you, as they have pushed the
game back okay, really it was coming out. Actually, this, the
blog post they put up on their site doesn't say what the original release date
was. Why would they? Yeah, they only say the new one,
which is December. First. I wanted I believe it was a November game,
was it. Yeah, it's not. It's not a huge push.
It's not even that big a push. Then, Okay, I thought it
was a little bit October. Could have been October, Yeah, maybe,
Yeah, I want to say that puts it on the same day as just
cause yes. Oh man, I don't know, I mean whatever. Very
different audience, very different games. Uh, but I know where I'll be
casting my lot anyway, that's beside the point here. They cite mostly feedback
from people that have played it, yeah, and internal testing and stuff.
We felt there are adjustments and improvements we can make, including improving the co
op experience across all game modes, weapon gadget balancing, as well as menu
and interface navigation, so kind of some of everything. Yeah, some of
that stuff that seemed clucking the off of but you whatever, you look at
it and go like, well, this isn't the finished version, so yeah,
so whatever, but maybe that's what Maybe that's they were planning on going
with that stuff indeed, But I mean, you know, whatever, it's
it's kind of a non story. Like, hey, they added that like
terrorist hunt mode to it, which is like they're trying to claim that it's
a throwback to you know, the tea hunt modes they did before, but
it doesn't seem like the same thing. It's such a different game that it's
core that I don't know how you can really say that, you know,
It's like the old, old, old Rainbow six was such a hardcore oh
yeah, yeah, like you know, one shot and You're dead, realistic
kind of military simulator that when you're wrapping this around a more modern, yeah,
action oriented shooter horror, it's kind of that's a weird claim to make.
Anyway. I wonder if I wonder if this is like a sign of
a new Ubisoft and like a post Assassin's Creed Unity era. I mean,
that's certainly has to have had some influence, would have pushed them in this
in an in your direction, to push things back. I think, yeah,
well that's a good thing. I think we can all agree. Yeah,
yeah, they should put out games that aren't fucking yeah. The bold
proclamations continue on this podcast. People should shift games that work when you buy
them controversial stances. You should be able to buy a game and and and
then and then put it into whatever, or like run it from what however
you run it that you doubt will you put it in over the internet or
you put it in over the optical drive your console still has because it's old.
Uh, and play a video game and have it function. I understand
what you're saying, and I appreciate it. I just I don't know.
Keep don't say things you don't mean. Games shouldn't be broken, person,
There should be. There should be fewer patches to games, not because the
world is not ready for but but only for the reason that games shouldn't need
them. They should ship working. We should just go back to the dark
ages. I guess with no Internet. I'm not one of these have glitch
games every I'm not one of these fucking dummies. There's like I remember back
in my day, you put the cartridge in, it just quit. You
just put it in, it goes. It's like, well, fucking shit
changed. Guess what. Technology is fucking hard and it's way more advanced now,
so games are way more complicated, Like you keep taking that tack and
it's noble in a weird way, but it's so misguided that, oh my
god, I want to just strangle you. Yeah, that's not a practical
response any Yeah, Like, patches aren't inherently evil. The broken video games
are broken video games of the evil part. Ye make them work. They
are, They are the product of Satan. Patches are there for like,
you know, patches can be used for good, not evil. Yes,
indeed, and they should be used lightly. They should not be used lightly.
Make them count, do you? Havelow came out with a new patch
just a couple of days again, Yeah, that just came out. The
big ones to day I think three. Yeah, the one that adds the
new artists in there, which is weird because you can actually remove the level
requirement from certain items. Weird. Yeah, So you could you know,
have this, you know, a super duper legendary item and just give it
to one of your level one alts. That's cool, I guess. So
would it make the game more fun? It's probably cool. It's I think
the people that are probably sticking with that game would say that that that game
doesn't start until you hit max level. Now, they'd be one of those
people. You're probably it's just sort of like, you know, they're doing
what they do with World of Warcraft and like just making the ramp to max
level really trivial. Okay, man, yeah, Destiny he's also doing that
that new expansion. Do you see there's gonna be an item where you can
just immediately level new character to twenty five. Okay, so like here you
go, and we will these be limb the items. You will only get
one one per account. Okay. Yeah, remember all that bullshit you had
to do just to get up the level twenty five? Wow? You skip
all that. I'm actually conflicted about that thing because I wanted to play a
new character in this thing to see, like I wanted to hear all the
Nolan North. I wanted to see what they did to quote unquote fixed Destiny,
Like I thought it would be a super interesting thing to do to just
see, like, how did you remake your own gamely agree after a year,
well, I'm still like level twelve. Yeah that's okay, all right,
I have a level six characters that I kind of stopped with. But
I even want to see how the game starts, Like I want to see
if they didn't even be different there, you know, well these rumors going
around about how they originally had like different starting areas for different character classes and
stuff like, Hey, Guardian Oi talks like the penguin. Yep, that
would that would make sense? He can do that, Yeah, he knows
how. All Right, packs is like two hours closer than it was at
the beginning of this podcast. Let's move this thing along with some emails.
I'm excit different things. Yeah, yeah, me too, bodcast of giant
bomb dot com. First email comes from David and Montreal. He says,
Hi, Hey, given that we're seeing occasional games mimicking in nes and sneest
styles or limitations of graphics, gameplay, music, and or sound, do
you think we'll see a similar wave of games mimicking titles from the PlayStation one
and in sixty four era in similar regards purposefully poor voice acting, bad audio
and video compression on speech, low rez, pre rendered backgrounds, polygon cracks,
warping textures, et cetera. All of that shit sounds looks terrible,
alright, totally with you. I mean, you know, there's an overabundance
and an oversaturation of you know, PIXELI retro style graphics not nowadays, but
that and it's I pleasing, is what hear me out. A lot of
those, a lot of the fake eight in sixteen bit games don't actually adhere
to the limitation almost none of them. Like they're they're just kind of taking
the best parts of those things and cart forward. So it wouldn't be about
deliberately bad voice acting, because that's hard to do. But if you think
about things like that polygonal style, you know, clean it up like volume.
We just talked about volume, like you know, like that sort of
thing I think could absolutely work. Yeah, but actually actually, but if
you drag it all the way down to like yeah, where it's like warping
polygons and stuff like that, at some point it becomes like the the Sonic
Dream collection, Like that's a fucking nightmare. Uh. And it's it's beautiful.
How that's that's weird fan made thing. It's the it's the thing from
the creators of the Bubby three d Art Museum thing. Yes. I can
appreciate a good low face style, yes, if it's done well right.
However, if you're talking about like some of the standouts of like the thirty
two bit generation early three d polygonal stuff. None of that holds up like
it looks absolutely terrible. But I think if you took those, just even
some of those same low poly models and clean them up, clean them up
to add pollies to them, but to sharpen things up a little bit,
the same way that like, you know, all the fake APIT games now
have sharper edges than you would have ever gotten out of a CRT and they
can have their dumb CRT filters and they're all they want. You know,
they're a stupid they're wide screen, they have like a bigger color than they
could have, Like like the music has like two more channels than they would
have been able to. It's like the music includes square wave, but it's
obviously not like you know, it's got real samples in there and stuff too.
Right, it's a it's a like a pastiche of that old stuff with
modern like, I think there's ability. I wouldn't necessarily dismiss it out of
hand if someone made a fake N sixty five game, damn it, but
made it, but actually you did that thing? What where I came into
this with a preconceived notion, and now I have gone back and reconsidered.
My opinion, I think that there's a room for that to not be total
shit. I think there's room for that for again a few games. Yeah,
it hasn't be done well. I mean a bunch of people will try
because they'll think that like that's the next like gold Rush or whatever. Or
it's still it's still relatively easy to do when you compared to like full scale
production on art and all this other stuff. I was right. I will
say I've seen footage of a couple indie games that are just attempting to look
like a PS one game, and like, I'm not interested in that.
I'm sorry. I don't think that look in and of itself is something that's
not plenty enough. Yeah, you know, I think that you could probably
get away with that. Yeah, depending on Also, like if you're playing
it, if you're gonna go that much in three D direction, I feel
like it's not that much more effort to make it look a little better.
Yeah, Like in some ways you're probably like making it like in sixty four
accurate may even be more difficult, right, Yeah, yeah, because you
might have to limit yourself in ways you hadn't thought of right off the bat.
You'd have to kind of study the details of it. Grow Home is
actually the perfect example of like, but that looks like a PlayStation one game
in twenty fifteen, you know, like it's sharp, it's smooth, like
it runs well, yeah, like it's got to like like that. That
totally can look amazing. Yet of all two still looks yes, yeah,
just because it runs, so coming up on this podcast, we're just gonna
have to play it. At some point, you played like mald Bulls yet
yeah, yeah, recently, yeah, we did. We did a video
of that. That's like a that's like a flat shaded, like super low
poly like Dark Souls type game. Like it has a kind of a striking
look to it, and I think that's made by like one or very few
people. All right, fine, yes there is room for that aesthetic.
And also bring back cell shading. Okay, yeah, I'm with you on
there. I looked at those Tony Ox screen shots and said, you know
what, all right, I don't think that game looks amazing, but why
not? Is that thing actually sell shaded apparently? Yeah? What weird?
Okay, like it wasn't before. And then they put out some screenshots and
you're like, oh, all right, worked for Borderlands. Man, think
about how good Automode LISTA could have been if it played well. So,
oh yes, I missed that. Why was that game bad? It was
too How simulation oriented the driving was was not enough? Yeah, Like it
had all the kind of RPG, like the kind of the elements of like
building up a car and parts and all this other stuff of a Grand Turismo,
but then it also tried to control sort of like Grand Turismo. So
it's not the point. You're like, well, what why would I want
to sell shaded Grand Turismo? You want to you want to kick the rear
end of your cartoon car out as you slide around the corner. I want
to do that so bad. Yeah you don't even know. Yeah, a
little about another fighting game that looked like old Virtue A Fighter. Yeah,
I think that. I think you could totally do that totally. It would
be badass. Yeah, there's there's to take place in cyberspace. Now,
that's the only difference is you know, as to be some kind of like
reason for it to look like that with like Lucky Palmer profile up in the
corner with its VR helmets as his icon. Rise the Robots three Okay,
I just want to fight Polygon Man at the end of the whole thing.
Justin McElroy, Yes, that's the guy. Sean from Chesterfield, Virginia.
What's up, bomb cast? You and your wife or girlfriend are eagerly anticipating
the birth of your new child. Which video game character would you want to
deliver your baby out of the womb and into your arms? Are you serious?
Jason? You might be able to speak to this. I have not
thought about this, do you have. Have you consulted with doctor Mario?
I had no, I have not. I think we're interviewing him to be
our pH. How about doctor Buskanovic a couple of weeks him as well.
He's in the running. Yeah, great, Doctor Wiley, doctor Braskanovic,
He's just he's just a fall down drunk. Yeah, he really lays down
on the job, he really does. Yeah. Doctor Naomi Hunter, there
we go. M you don't want that. No, you don't know.
She doesn't properly disinfect spread the virus around. I mean the kid would be
fine, but anyone the kid came into contact with just be Yeah. Yeah,
absolutely, just a carrier. Yeah, that's that's sorry. That's something
I really have to ponder. Yeah, geez, I don't know. I
thought about fictional characters delivering my baby. Who seems like a capable who could
like deliver a baby in the back of a cab if they had to Sonic.
Uh. Yeah, it seems like a reliable guy. Oh boy,
I mean he could get us to the hospital of time anyway. The gloves
are real white and so they seemed clean. He seems like he keeps clean.
Touching that one. M I mean what about doctor Robotnik, He's a
doctor, that's true. Yeah, mean mean machine delivery machine? Yeah,
that would probably work. Just strap her in. And what about Rocket from
Ghost Trick? No rocks Rocket and Ghost Trick the dog missile missile? Yeah,
I'm not sure is that the name? I never played that game.
Yeah, I'm gonna have to go with doctor Mario, all right? Think?
Yeah, that dog seems capable, yes, and doctor Mario's a safe
choice. Yeah, I think. I feel like you can basically you could
basically just say who would you want on your zombie team? As an alternate
version of this question, who is capable and responsible in the video game world?
Missile? Yeah, I would want all zombies actually about right, I
would actually want all resid evil zombies because no one's gonna fuck with That's true.
Just blend right in. Wel Jason, we wish you will. Thank
you. Yeah, that's coming up to quite you're pending arrival. Oh boy,
uh it happened. Yeah, sooner nerd than later. Buckle up,
hell of a ride. Phil from San Marcos has an idea. I love
your coverage of E three conferences. I also like to watch old E three
conferences. I think it would be interesting to watch you guys talk over older
E three conferences. That is all, what do you guys think? Yeah,
we've talked about it. Yeah, I like that idea. Yeah,
would we do the whole thing? I think you would have to, I
guess so, yeah, like you don't. You don't just do nine U
S dollars whatever. You kind of have to take all the whole thing.
Like if you were just gonna do E three press conference moments, then you're
just doing like a VH one production, right right, there's like five or
nine dollars. Who would have done that brown and slam smash cut to the
footage and the slam cut back to Michailee and black. It was just like
making a fart noise, sound of a boiling on your wing in the background,
pop up E three video. Yeah, just just get out the sound
board. I don't know what we would pick though. There's a lot of
press conference Like, what is it. It's like four to five press conferences
a year for the last like twenty years. That's a lot of shows to
pick from. I mean, you could just go back and pick some of
the more infamous ones or something like that to start, or I'd actually I'd
be waterested in some of the more benign events just to try to get a
read on I don't know, man like that stuff. Like at this point,
having gone to damn near all of them or been to a lot of
press conference over the years, a lot of that stuff just runs together.
So it's just like all the stuff is just like in my mind, is
there's this like mash up, this horrible super cut of just like Robbie Drums
and you know the Killzone trailer. Yeah, mister caffeine fucking Jamie Kennedy.
People like people crying over Twilight Princess. Yeah, at the time that guy
stood up with like the Rising Sun bandana on to try to ask me amoto
question in Japanese, particularly great Japanese speaker. Yes, fuck Jay Allard sitting
down on the slanted stage. Yeah, totally. I was there for that
one. Yeah, they're They're a lot, a lot of good dumb press.
It's all moments like that. Now, it's just like that's all that
exists in my head, like the people walking out there and announcing games and
something like what I mean, I had hopped on YouTube when i Wata passed
away and like was pulling up some old clips at him, and like from
a less jokey and more reverent perspective, like that was kind of cool to
go back and watch, like like the DS reveal, you know, like
the first DS right, and nobody knew what the fuck it was. Yeah,
yeah, those those kinds of things would be fun. I think,
what what year was it where he walked out to exhibit sonny an X minor
really like Nintendo just had the there was like this almost orchestral kind of sent
these things from this exhibit song. Huh. I don't know, and it's
just like no, Satoru e Wata and exhibit is playing all right. Maybe
maybe he was a big X fan, Yeah, who knows? Probably,
And we all were Yeah, those were heavy days. Yeah, I think
that would be fun. I saw him at a PSPs conference exhibit I mean,
oh, I don't know which which one. I was the one where
they were announcing the music support was the one in Vegas? Yeah, yeah,
I was a CS or dice or something and we were out there and
exhibit was there. Yeah. Yeah, and then we saw Camp Freddie.
Yes, that was that same trip. Yep. That was a weird trip.
Yeah, that was a weird trip. I don't even know how we
would pick. We would have to just like throw a bunch of a hat
and pull them out. I think, yeah, because there's a lot to
pick from. Let's build a roulette wheel. That would be fun. With
the wheel of conferences. That would be fun. And I'm totally down for
that idea. Yeah, good idea, Phil. Thanks. Michael from Bellingham,
Washington says Hell is coming. Every convenience store in my city is phasing
out proper forties for plastic ones. Hell descends God is dead and we have
killed him. Yeah. Yeah, is that we have some There are some
ordinances, whether they're city or I don't know if it's local or statewide or
whatever that you can't have glass spottles above a certain size. A lot of
glass. It's a lot of glass. True. So some in some uh
some areas, they actually it's there's some law specifically about forty ounces that they
will just sell thirty twos. Wow, good, great yourself with trade deuce
uh or two or two? Why stop there? Yeah? We call that
a Nintendo uh and uh yeah. So I'm imagining that this is some extension
of that stuff. Do you think that affects the flavor, the the bouquet
of the malt laquer? Nah? Man, that stuff is fucking it's impenetrable.
It's probably better because you know, those last eight ounces anyway are so
fucking piss warm and nasty. Yeah, you're just not drinking them fast night.
You're probably right. Well. With the plastic conduct heat more efficiently,
let's make it good questions, I would think, So it gets bound to
be thinner plastic, yeah, than the glass, I mean certainly. Yeah.
Yeah, that's why I bring a thermis with me where I go,
so I can just pour the forty directly into the thermis and then I have
the bottle ready to break right right there, just front loaded. I wonder
how I wonder how cold is Zuji Roushi would keep forty or however much of
the forty you could fit in there was that thing. Hold you probably get
a big one sixteen eighteen ounces something. You can get a bigger one maybe,
but get this Zi rice cooker for you in there. I heat it
up. Yeah, that sounds like a good time. It just makes a
giant pancake. Make rice with malt liquor. Yeah, I'm sure it's like
rice wine bechnically. I think that's yeah, that's oh good, you can
do it. If if my rice cooker wasn't relatively nice and I wanted to
make sure I didn't ruin it, I might give that a shot. That
sounds horrifying. I'll present this idea to Dan Record. Okay, see what
he says. He can bring his rice cooker. He has a lab for
this sort of stuff. That's true. Yeah, yes, it's food lab.
I've I've soaked chicken and malt liquor before. All right, Okay,
how'd that go, like over a day cooked like you were preparing like King
Cobra. Okay, how'd that? It's dumb fucking yeah? But did it
taste No? Not really, it was fine. It was fine, it
wasn't Moliker's got a certain bitterness to it. Yeah, okay, yeah,
enough of that carried through. You're like, well, this tastes like someone
fucking spilled a beer on my chicken. It's a real bummer. Gross.
Yeah, something seems not right to me about drinking alcohol from a plastic container.
I just I agree, But I think that's how they sell them,
Like in most baseball games. You don't get Yeah, I mean like a
solo cup, I guess is fine, but I mean literally, like,
you know, instead of its bottle. Yeah, they're I mean, yeah,
there are like there are like plastic beer bottles out there for sure,
But it just it seems wrong somehow. I agree, like a store bought
like contain like a sealed plastic container. Shin right, Just I can't serving
to can Yeah, don't work forty. You can't get sixty fours anymore.
No, it's not around here. I know where you can where Tokyo,
Japan. Well, yeah, that's a that's a big beer. That's the
home of the big beer. Yeah, I say, Mickey's in Big sixty
four. Yeah exactly. You know there's yeah Big sixty four Mickey's. He
gets a two hand that thing. Ye, yeah, yeah, they call
that living. Yes, indeed, sort of yes for a time, for
a time, until it puts an end to your living. Yeah. Yeah,
it's rough. Herb in San Francisco right soon? Where is it Herb?
I don't know her don't I don't actually know Herb. It's the name,
it's Herb. Yes, that was my assumption. I saw Straight out
of Compton last week and noticed something curious during the preceding trailer for Ride Along
Too. I did not know they were making another ride along. How about
you, guys. There's a prominently featured poster for Gears of War three,
and what I believe is Kevin Hart's character's apartment. If memory serves, it's
visible for at least ten seconds. I had the misfortune of seeing the first
ride along. Kevin Hart's character is this established as a gamer via his enthusiasm
for a fictitious call of duty facsimily, it's possible that the poster is simply
a piece of indep set design. On the other hand, the game is
almost five years old, and it seems like a major studio comedy of Righte
Along twos ILK wouldn't pass up the opportunity to get those products placement dollars.
My question for you is, do you think the appearance of a Gears of
War poster and this film is intended to promote this week's Gears of War one
remaster? If so, is this kind of marketing precedented? Why not just
go whole hog and promote the current release directly? Am I just overthinking this?
Na man? That movie was made like years ago? Which movie right
along too? She shot it before the first one? Yes? Yeah,
yeah, right, yes, No, I think that's way too coordinated for
I agree that that seems a little like a Yeah, that's a bridge too
far as far as people doing subtle marketing for products that don't even really relate
to each other. Yes, some set designers just like that looks like a
video game slap. That's probably the case. It's not like that weird ass
rage thing and Breaking Bad or Yeah, that's probably still the weirdest video game
placement to date. Friends of Persia in that game, and that show Life
was also really weird? Yes? Yes, was it House of Cars?
Yes, a bunch of really weird rotten with Sony stuff. Yeah. Frances
Underwood. Underwood is a huge PlayStation fan, but he doesn't. He like
name drop the Vita at one point even Yeah, I think the Vida.
I think he mentions Call of Duty, Like in the first season. There
are multiple instances of him like coming home from the Senate or whatever and just
plopping down and playing Call of Duty visibly, and then at one point he
talks like he says something about keeping a vida with him or something like its
fucking weird. Well and he I forget how it went, but there's some
plot part where he gets an idea from reading a video game review or actual
Monument Valley. Yeah, he's like he's seen his game Monument Valley. It's
a mobile games. Is that in the new season? Yeah, the third
one. I haven't watched that yet or second, I don't know, I
don't remember that. That's bizarre. That's weird. That is really weird.
Product placement is weird and jarring, but sometimes super fun. Yeah yeah,
sometimes sure, like it takes you out of a thing, but sometimes you're
just like, that's fucking nuts. Yeah, totally agreed. Worked in Wayne's
World two. Yeah, wait, what was the product placement? It was
all of it all at once in the course of like eight seconds. Oh
man, right, God, I haven't seen that forever, no one has.
Yeah, yeah, wayness, the world doesn't really seem like something.
As you go back to that Wayne World two, I mean maybe the first
lacking at the time, maybe the first one. The first one probably gets
some play here and there you might catch Wayne's World one. Yeah, one
cable yeah or something. Though, the lack of actual stairway to Heaven ruined
all post release copies of Wayne's World. Wait was it in there and then
they took it out? Yeah? Did they? For the release had him
playing oh no shit, yeah, wait that scene where the guy points to
the no stairway South Seas sense in what the theatrical release of the movie,
whereas it was replaced with a bunch of fucking garbage in the the video man,
And now you're like, what the thought they could never secure? Okay,
maybe that's why Okay, my teenage mind is blown. Yeah, that's
crazy. I had no idea stairway. Wait, so they did they replace
the scene with the no stairways joke? They replaced the scene is the same.
They replaced what he plays on the guitar that causes him to point to
the sign that says no stairway with not stairway. Oh okay, that whole
shot is still in there, in there, but it used to be.
What he played on the guitar was like a fucking half asked stairway to heaven
and he goes, hey, no stairway. You're like, okay, that's
that's a joke there, Okay. I think I was a kid. I
didn't know. Yeah enough, oh sure Zeppelin to even understand. But that's
crazy, man. You've learned something new every day. It's true. Who
would have thought? Uh Landon writes in about Tomato people. I was watching
you guys play Super Mario Maker on un Professional Friday, and I was blown
away when Jeff called the gumbas in Super Mario World lame. Not because I
disagreed with him, but because I always thought they were a little tomato people.
Who's the lame one? Now he's He's right though. They suck as
gumbas, but they're cool looking tomatoes. Do you guys know of any other
games with cool looking tomatoes? Franciss Tomato Princess Tomato King Prans Tomato in the
Salad Kingdom was only that was my one game to bring to this email Captain
Tomi Day. You play as a tomato tomatoes in Ready and Tomatoes has some
tomato tossing hockey and Rocky could you throw tomatoes? Are there any tomatoes in
Burger Time? Yeah? Probably ok, slices? All right, I'll accept
that. Right. There was a database of things that were in video games
we could consult. Yeah, sure, WICKI listening any tomatoes in the Noid
game or they're like pizza ingredients? No, that game had ninja is in
it, and then they localized it to put the noise of it right lame
product place. Indeed, I like the gumbas in Marial World look like yeah.
Like it was one of those things where I think I was with him
where I didn't even realize they were goombas originally, and then it was like,
oh wait, those are like half asked gumbas. It just seemed like
a like a sign of the new hardware to me. It was like,
oh, they can animate these things and make them look like they're not just
facing the screen all the time. Now they can make it look like they
have depths. The shape is different, they don't look right. Home Front
apparently has tomatoes. Okay, Cityville, I would believe that Farmer rama Scott
Pilgrim that definitely checks out scribble knots okay, dead Space. Wait a minute,
now, you're just talking crazy Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, Ever Quest,
the Planes of Power, all these ever expansions. Sure, Tonic Trouble,
Harvest Moon makes sense, Virtual Bart, Zombies, ate my neighbors to
Jam and Earl, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Gremlins too, the New
Batch, Princess Tomato and the Salad Kingdom. I like Kremlin's two. I
never saw it really, yeah Ki Kremlin's one. Sure. I feel like
Gremlin's two was poorly received at the time. Yeah, I think for a
good reason. Hogan and Gremlins too. At point they're like tearing apart the
Yeah, tearing apart the movie projector and end up in a bunch of different
movies or some dumb thing like that. So I saw it Back to the
Future three. I guess at a drive in in Oregon, and it was
like three drive in screens, all kind of facing into the center. So
you drove everyone drove into the center, and then depending on which way you
were facing, you know, you parked closer to the screen you wanted to
watch. You just turn around. You turn around to the sea, so
you turned out. So I turned around and saw a whole cogan and some
gremlins and thought, that's probably terrible. I'm not saying it's a great movie,
but I remember enjoying it. Okay, I like places to see back
to the futures. I liked all the weird mutant gremlins. That was probably
the thing that piqued my childish interest. Yeah, they like there was the
one with like the different there was the one dremlin had the bat wings and
could fly around and like all kinds of grody shit girls. The one is
like the best Christmas movie, I think, my favorite Christmas movie. Yeah,
so good. Do you guys spend much time at drive ins? I
don't know that I've ever actually watched a movie the drive in. I saw
Bambi at a drive in. It's heavy metal. Heavy Metal is a good
fucking drive in movie. As a young child that probably shouldn't have seen heavy
metal at all. Probably right my uncle, when I was probably like five
or six, it took me to go see heavy Metal in the theater.
My grandparents farm was really close to the local drive in theater, and if
you sat on the fence just right, you could see the movie and kind
of hear it. Because this is before the FM transmission stuff, so they
actually had the boxes that you put the sound in the car that way,
ye, so and you could kind to hear because there were so many different
boxes turned up. And I remember they were showing The Joy of Sex and
we were really interested in trying to catch some parts of that and sat there
craning our next trying to like, look, if we run down the field
this way, we can kind of never quite worked out eventually that they tore
that movie theater down. There's a walmart there, there's another movie theater that
was just south of town. Uh that eventually I think I saw Tron there.
Whoa, and that's pretty impressive. But then eventually it became a porno
drive in theater. You can kind of see it from the road. That's
that's fucked up. That's fucked up. So that was another case of like
you know, when you're driving south at night, you're like again like as
a small kid in the back of a car, like craning your neck trying
to definitely get a look at that. Yeah, and you get a little
bit but it was. It's such an angle that you're just like, that's
some kind of flesh ye. Also, I don't know what they're doing,
but that's cool. Movies doesn't seem legal. They tore down, Yeah,
clearly it wasn't. Drive ins are a big part of my childhood. There's
been a lot of time I don't have movies. I guess there are still
so out there, just for like so Chalgic Value in Atlanta actually had the
Starlight drive in fantastic and I think they've got like six screens, all really
nice digital projectors. Oh, it was the best going there because we would
like tailgate, you know, so we'd go there a little bit early with
like a grill and stuff, or maybe like pick up a pizza. Sounds
awesome. It was. Yeah, it was the best to get back in
the car to watch the movie. H Sometimes. Yeah, we would just
like open up the back, you know, blast stereo or whatever. But
you could pay like six bucks, but you could, you know, sneak
to the other screens as well, so you'd get like three movies per person
for like six bucks. When you when you were talking about the FM transmitting
stuff, you were literally listening to the movie over your car speakers, like
through the radio. So if you had a good stereo, it was awesome.
Wow, that's kind of cool. Yeah, previously that they just had
these little speaker things that you would like, you know, detach from a
pole, you know, and clip it onto your window inside of your car.
Sounded. Yeah, I've seen that stuff. Yeah, I've definitely that's
like the popular image of the drive through or drive in n I've really missed
those. Yeah. Almost seems like it's like there's like a kitchy retro aspect
to that where people that's probably what keeps the last few remaining ones afloat.
People will bring it back a little bit of starlight. Yeah, like during
the day actually that it would be like, you know, either a flea
market or they would have like themed events that it would be like you know,
old hot rods like rocketbilly stuff. They bring in bands and ships.
So they didn't embrace that. Yeah, that old, you know, fifty
sixties lifestyle. It's cool, that's all right. Two more emails. Here's
one from Gary and all caps. How many video games have you played in
your entire life? Five two hundred and sixty seven zero one dollar? Jeff
is yet to find one. Q Dude, I don't know. I would
love to know. It's one of those intangibles that you'll never actually get your
head around, but I would love to just Like, what if you just
sat down with a list of video games and just look down on the database.
But like everyone you've ever put your hands on, I mean, you
probably forgot about something, but I'm sure you know, like I guess you
could ballpark it. I think I put all like my entire collection on a
giant on the list at one point, and I was like, oh,
I'll probably just update this whenever I play a new game. No, but
like I think all my old games are on there, and I think it's
I don't know, three under or something on there, So I don't know
triple that. Yeah, yeah, I'm sure it's true for most people.
It certainly was for me Like I was. I was renting and borrowing games
like a fiend when I was a kid, So I certainly played like way
more games than I actually owned. And then I could add to that like
games on my Xbox Live profile and my Steam profile. Get a reason.
God, it's got to be in the thousands, right, So I mean,
just from what I've cataloged so far, I own just north of three
thousand games, but I haven't played all of them. Oh man, there's
some in television games on that list that I may have played other places,
but I haven't played those actual cards. And just like weird stuff like this,
especially now in the era of like a zillion indie games coming out on
Steam all the time and they're all five bucks things for a quick look.
At this point, you know, we're in a position where we touch a
ton of different games all the time, and many of them are rememerable in
anyway. Yeah, like we're probably each putting our hands on like hundreds of
games a year. Is that So does that sound inflated? No, that
sounds that sounds right in some capacity. For thirty seconds, Yeah, the
same weeks where I, you know, touched three four, you know,
maybe five games. So gross. Yeah, I know, that's that's why
you're That's why you're here, Game Touchers. Last email comes from Pedro and
Portugal. He actually snuck into there's like two different there's two entire emails in
this email. I don't know if that's not here, No, why do
you let this? But they're both pretty good all right, we'll take them
number one. After the news of Peter Dinklage being literally patched out of Destiny,
I couldn't heal. I couldn't help but feel a bit apprehensive, not
because of any opinion on his acting sums I don't know in the game,
but rather the idea of a game company radically altering pre existing portions of a
game after release. It reminded me of the controversy regarding the PC port of
San Andreas, where Rockstar patched out several songs from the soundtrack due to losing
the rights YEA, thus making the game an inferior product than it was when
the player first bought it. Do you think this could lead to increasingly malicious
abuses? Should legislation be put in place to make sure that the developer or
publisher cannot make a game inferior after release or would finding a proper definition of
inferior make that task impossible. On the other hand, there are very few
art forms outside of live performance art that allow for such continuous alteration at the
whims of the artist. Regardless of what George Lucas will have you believe,
would a single game that changes as time goes on work. I think if
you had those sorts of restrictions in there and the company wanted to say do
an you an upbres or even patch the game, and they just would not,
or the game would just cease being sold if you couldn't, or they
would have to like take it off shelves for a year and like something else.
You know, it would be worse. Yeah, they're there are way
more examples of you know, people improving games with updates rather than than removing
aspects of them. But like that is kind of a chilling. It's a
chilling prospect. But you know, like games get patched all the time for
a lot of different reasons. It's you know, it's inveriably going to be
happening. Sure, you know, probably more and more especially, I mean
you look at MMOs, Like when you get into game preservation, like that
stuff, the people that take that stuff very seriously and want the literal museum
quality you know, preservation techniques to be applied. Like that gets really hard
because then you're like, well, how do you get an unpatched version of
an iOS game? Right? Like are there people out there saving because you
can save those executables in a way there's a way to do that, but
like how many people are doing that? How people care? All takes in
one, yeah, one one. The right person has to think of it
and do it and then distribute it and then it's out there, right,
you know, and it gets into just like MMOs that have gone offline,
and you know, how do you play that sort of stuff or even even
like games that are continuing, like like why Cataclysm was like the kind of
the classic example of like a whole shitload of like very popular content that a
lot of people experienced and remember fondly is about to just disappear, like they're
going to replace it with this whole new version of the game that changes as
zillion things and that's just gone. But obviously people out there run private servers
for that stuff, and like you know, original version of Destiny still exists
on a disc out there somewhere, and like those consoles haven't been broken open
yet, but like you could imagine five or ten years from now, like
right, maybe somebody will find a way to resurrect Peter Dinklage's performance in that
thing, or like it, have it in some form where you don't have
to just like emulate a destiny server just enough to get your dinklage. Yes,
yeah, something like that. I don't know like that. Yeah,
it is a it is a weird philosophical problems as like, as you see
more and more attention around game preservation, like you said on the line,
like more and more people seem interested in like archiving the culture, you know,
right, preserving it so that people who aren't around now can understand what
it was at some point in the future. It's a complicated problem. But
pirates and bootleggers, man, Yeah, yeah, there are a hope for
the future. Yeah, they gave they gave us NASCAR last time. We'll
see what they come up with next. But you're right, it seems like
it does fall on them because you know, corporate entities don't give a fuck.
No, absolutely not, and and why would you expect them to be
honestly, like they're they're just slash and burn to get the profit. You
know, that that's the their that's what their motivation is. And it might
be easier to like, you know, just redo some stuff as opposed to
like renegotiating licensing deals, you know, especially in the case of like,
you know, songs being a license you see that a lot in TV shows.
You know, we're like, you know, the opening theme song.
You know, it was only license for television, not like syndication or like
DVD distribution or something like that. So yeah, there's a lot of different
factors. That's what's what catched the State off DVD for a long Yeah,
oh god, you're right. Yeah. And even still when they did put
it out, they replaced all the music, uh, all of it,
because that was a that was an MTV joint. Yeah, it was empty,
so they had right because they were just pulling the catalog exactly. So
it was just like straight up music all over that motherfucker. Yeah. And
then god, I spent so many years dying for the State in some form,
and by the time it finally happened, I'd kind of move on.
You download all those fucked up looking vhs as like they're just they're actual ASP
or rms or whatever. Yeah, yeah, those are still superior to the
DVD release because they have actual it's the real thing. Yep. That's a
good point. Ye, nightmare buyers and bootleggers doing the Lord's work, all
right, here's want to hear cannonball played over that onetle bit. That's it.
That's all. God, which skit was that wasn't there? Was there
something actually rolling in that thing? I can't remember what was that. I
can't remember specifically which one it is now Sarmons one or somebody somebody right in
and tell us which is skit from the state had cannonball in it? I
know the cannonball video had an actual cannonball rolling around. Maybe I'm conflating those
two things. All right, here's Pedro's second email, and this will be
the last thing that we do, speaking of changes. After hearing Jeff wish
that MGS four had in fact ended with Snake's suicide, I'd like to ask
the crew's thoughts on Kojima's actual plans for the ending. Are you guys familiar
with this stuff? This must have been in some interviewer, behind the scenes
stuff that I had not heard of until today. Also, big spoilers fremail
here four. Although this is what he wanted the ending to be, Well,
but you just say it had it did not end, right? I
mean, that could be a zillion things. None of this made it into
the game. Kojima wanted to end the game with Snake and Audicon turning themselves
into the authorities and being executed for their vigilante and criminal actions, presumably dating
all the way back to the tanker incident. This is the real reason why
Here's to You has become part of the MGS series soundtrack, since the song
is a tribute to Saco and Vanzetti, to anarchist activists who were executed for
a crime they did not commit. Okay, you can wikipedia that that's a
pretty famous case. The reason this wasn't in the game, funnily enough,
wasn't because konan Me threatened to banish him to the Pachinko mines, but because
Kojima's own staff mutinied against him. Uh. The Wikipeda page bears that out.
It says like the internally like people were very opposed to that ending,
so he backpedaled on it. Would you have preferred to see that ending instead?
Personally, I would much rather have seen this instead of the silly ending
with Snake spending his last months of life living in the middle of nowhere with
Audicon and Sonny, with the former gushing about how awesome he is, which
to me is probably the biggest bought dollop of which to me is probably the
biggest dollop of pandering fan service in that entire video game. It was fucking
bullshit. I hated that ending. Yeah yeah, they're like, yeah,
like the snake goes on and lives off in the in the wilderness and stuff.
I felt was was a big let down. It was like, and
then it becomes Commando and everyone lives ever after. Okay, Sonny is Alana.
Yeah, Okay, I can see him. I think I was so
I was so like shell shocked by everything else I had seen in that game
at that point that like I didn't even know what to make of that last
five to ten minutes. But yeah, this, this is not the only
email we got about this potential other ending, and like, yeah, they
were literally going to be portrayed by the world as war criminals and executed.
I'm I guess I could pay with that. It fits more in line with
the events of all of Metal Gear, I guess, yeah, and thematically
yeah yeah, yeah, but that saying it's crazy to hear though, Like
I kind of I feel like I know I did this, and I'm probably
most people did. Like they laid that at Kojima's feet right when that game
ended and he didn't die off when the entire thing had been building to that
moment and then they pulled back. I think so. Like I kind of
assumed it was him that he was afraid to pull the sugar, but it
sounds like he was ready to go all the way. Yeah, that would
have put a very different spin on the end of that of that arc.
Yeah, that would have been good. That have been yeah for sure.
All right. Do you think you would have had cont roll during your execution?
Oh? Man, like zoom in, just just zoom in one,
get on the Kodak and yeah, man, ask for help. Uh,
probably they turn on the gas if you just smash the ketchup bottle on yourself.
And how would you how would you execute salids? Make what would you
do? Firing squad? Yeah? That seems like the most poetic, right,
Yeah, especially if it's a military thing. I guess, I don't
know, not a military like you know, kill people. What would be
a way that would give them an out? Like gas? Because it was
a gas that made him unconscious and then they but he really did really didn't
kill him. A sentimental coma, it's a medical comma. Then he was
in a comma for all this time and the Nanto machines deployed the antidote.
Yeah, radiation does not work. I've seen that clearly. Nope, nope,
that is the case. All right, thank you Pedro and everyone else
who wrote in podcast chip on dot com. I mean, if you,
if you, if like, if you kill him, there is always the
potential he could come back, right as an AI as something stupid. Yeah,
I mean if you have him retire, he's retired, unless he doesn't
want to be. He could always come out of retirement. That's how you
can, right, you take away his job. I don't know what reason
for living. After they reanimated the corpse of Big Boss, like all bets
were off, like literally, nothing is permanent anymore. Yeah, right,
And there are so many situations by which they could to create another solid snake
clone and oh yeah we had another, like a fourth clone was over here
the whole time that you didn't know about. Shit stupid. Yep, you
just gotta surrender your brain and go with it. Yeah, I guess.
So it's good advice. I thought it was a fine ending for next week.
Yeah it's not. Yeah, there's nothing wrong with it. Yeah,
well, okay, that's maybe not you could pick a few things. Yeah,
it is a fine ending, you're right. Opinions, yes indeed.
Uh. Well, we will bring these and many other opinions with us to
Seattle here in a couple of days. Yeah, uh, and put them
on display for the world. Let's do then wear it on our shirt.
That sounds fun. Yeah, wear it on your sleeve. Yeah. Uh,
all right, make sure a shot. That's what I don't Yeah,
I should have done it. Should just put them just pulled our two yourself.
Just make it happen. All right. Well, let's get out of
here and finish up our last little preparations and go get on airplanes okay,
and head up to packs. But we'll be back way before next Tuesday.
Right. Yeah, they'll be stuff on the site, so there will be
Yeah, there'll be stuff for next week's releases. But also our live streams
are in the upcoming module. Yeah front door. Yeah you can find that
stuff there else else where's the info on like the venue and stuff? It's
on our Facebook page. Okay, you're can go find the jiant bomb facebook
page. There are Facebook events. Great. I for all that stuff,
we probably should write something and post it on the site itself. But no
one has done that yet. Yes, and we're rapidly rung out of time.
But that stuff is there and on our forums, I take it.
Yes, yes, yes, all right, we'll find all that stuff on
the site we're on Facebook. Yeah. If you're going to PAX, we'll
see there. Yeah. If you're not, then watch us do stuff.
Come say high. If not, then later skaters people always freak out and
say, oh, I didn't know. If you know, you didn't want
to us to say hi, come say high. Yeah, that's pretty much
why we're there. We'll tell you if we're late for something, yes,
yes, which case is sorry, but we're late for something. That's I
feel like that is that is always a valid excuse, Like you can never
not get away with hey i'm late for a meeting, I gotta go.
Yeah it work. Walking by high fives are always safe. Yes, Like
if we seem like we're busy and we're you know, running towards something,
Yeah, yeah, I may give you a fist bump. And yes,
I was gonna say if you're if you're concernsed of if you're concerned about convention
disease, the sanitary fist or elbow bump is always accepted. Yeah, somebody
elbow bumped me last year. Yeah, it's like I had not seen that
before that. Yeah, the first time, and he kept pushing his elbow
towards me. I'm not like, what the fuck are you if I'm if
I'm not mistaken? Right? That started Gary, maybe right and started,
but he introduced me to it. That's the first time I saw it.
I think that is a bit of a pack thing. Keep it, keep
it clean. Mm hmm. Still after dark, yes, then anything goes
yep, believe you me. All Right, we're gonna get out of here,
but we will be back next week, just in time to post another
giant bodcast, Mother Figures
