<v Speaker 1>Hey, everybody, welcome to Game Mess Mornings with Me Jeff Grub, <v Speaker 1>your host from giant bomb dot com. <v Speaker 2>Thank you for tuning in. In this episode, we're. <v Speaker 1>Gonna be talking about Mafia, the Old Country reviews, and <v Speaker 1>East PlayStation really gonna keep making live service games. <v Speaker 2>It's gonna be a good one because we have jan <v Speaker 2>A Choa on the show. Jan how are you doing? <v Speaker 3>The thing I forgot, Grub is that migrain medication at <v Speaker 3>least etc. Has caffeine in it, so it probably shouldn't <v Speaker 3>take it past five pm? <v Speaker 2>Okay, So it. <v Speaker 1>Helps the migraines and then keeps you awake and then <v Speaker 1>you're sleepy the next day. <v Speaker 2>How are you feeling? You know, the kids are worried <v Speaker 2>about you. <v Speaker 3>Generally broken already, Grub. But you know, it's like someone <v Speaker 3>had stepped on the broken glass and then forgot to <v Speaker 3>take their shoes off. I'm not sure which part of <v Speaker 3>me I am in the metaphor here of it, but <v Speaker 3>we're we're hanging and clanging, Grub. We're we're here, We're <v Speaker 3>out here, We're getting back into the swing of things. Yeah, yeah, yeah, <v Speaker 3>we're here. Yeah, we are here for sure. I'm glad <v Speaker 3>to hear about the hanging and or clanging. That's always <v Speaker 3>a good thing. <v Speaker 2>How are you doing otherwise? <v Speaker 1>Like, Okay, so when you are like in this situation, <v Speaker 1>because I've never never had migraines, good for you. Is <v Speaker 1>there anything you could do to like, Okay, we got <v Speaker 1>a little under control. Maybe I can go read a book. Honestly, <v Speaker 1>everything sounds like it could be something that would lead <v Speaker 1>back to the migraine. <v Speaker 4>So, uh, migraines. <v Speaker 3>It's the various spectrum of like triggers and stuff and <v Speaker 3>what ails folks. I particularly have like a lot of <v Speaker 3>light sensitivity, right, So and that's not just flashing lights. <v Speaker 3>That's not just like a bright light shining shining in <v Speaker 3>my face. That's like a screen that's particularly blue, or <v Speaker 3>like a really bright light source outside the window. So <v Speaker 3>I kind of have to retreat into the darkest corner <v Speaker 3>of my apartment. And I don't know if this actually helps, <v Speaker 3>but every time I've had a migraine in the last <v Speaker 3>couple of years, I will put on sound canceling headphones, <v Speaker 3>go on YouTube and search up this migraine relief three <v Speaker 3>hour mix. And I'm not sure it works. And I <v Speaker 3>think it is all like a placebo effect telling me <v Speaker 3>it's working. But I will just sit down in the <v Speaker 3>corner and just. <v Speaker 4>Like this is heealing me. This is good. <v Speaker 3>But the other problem is like sense will like trigger <v Speaker 3>it as well, So like if there's like a candle <v Speaker 3>going off, or even if it's food, it'll just be <v Speaker 3>like too much for whatever reason. So sometimes I will <v Speaker 3>literally have to like sit in a bathtub and isolate <v Speaker 3>myself for a couple hours. <v Speaker 1>Yeah, we were talking about that Rice versus peace and love, <v Speaker 1>like what you do for an injury, and like Rice was. <v Speaker 4>You know, rest ice, ice, pression, elebrish. <v Speaker 1>Elevate, and then peace and love is like protect elevate. <v Speaker 1>There's a bunch of them in there, but one of <v Speaker 1>them eventually you get to love. And one of them's optimism. <v Speaker 1>And that's a big part of like the placebo effect <v Speaker 1>and like listening to stuff and just believing things can help. <v Speaker 1>Like just being in that positive mindset really does actually <v Speaker 1>make a difference to healing or to be dealing with pain. <v Speaker 1>So yeah, like placebo effect or not, you've got to <v Speaker 1>just try stuff and believe it can work. <v Speaker 2>Hope everything bounces back quick for you. <v Speaker 1>Jam, let's explain ourselves in as far as giant Bomb goes, <v Speaker 1>We're giant Bomb. Not a lot of them actually <v Speaker 1>checked out Open Critics, like sixteen reviews worldwide so far <v Speaker 1>tract there's probably gonna be more coming soon, and a <v Speaker 1>lot of those were from European sites. <v Speaker 2>Things I had heard of a bunch before. <v Speaker 1>Not that that means anything, but it has a seventy <v Speaker 1>nine on Open Critic right now, or at least at <v Speaker 1>the time that I put this here into the dock <v Speaker 1>and Jake Decker over a game spot. <v Speaker 2>Hey, I love you, Jakie. <v Speaker 1>Six out of ten from Jake, and he said Mafia <v Speaker 1>the Old Country uses its stunning setting to tell a <v Speaker 1>familiar story about loyalty and family that's propped up by <v Speaker 1>its cast of characters. WCCF tex Lesio Palumba a plumbog <v Speaker 1>excuse me, gave it an eight out of ten and said, <v Speaker 1>Mafia the Old Country aims squarely at being a narrative <v Speaker 1>experience and largely succeeds in that while also providing solid gameplay. <v Speaker 1>It is a bit of a shame that we don't <v Speaker 1>get a get to truly explore sicily in this game. <v Speaker 1>But if you're into Mafia narratives, this is among the <v Speaker 1>best you can find in games, and the entry price <v Speaker 1>isn't that high either. Amikoulos at Checkpoint Gaming give it <v Speaker 1>an eight point five out of ten and said, at <v Speaker 1>first Mafia the Old Country swept me up straight away. <v Speaker 1>It's stunning world, compelling story and rich sense of place. <v Speaker 1>Felt like an Italian holiday as I played on the <v Speaker 1>simplicity of its combat and stealth stood out more, but <v Speaker 1>that's not what I valued most. Not the most inventive <v Speaker 1>action game, but one of the most immersive Yule play <v Speaker 1>this year. This is a leaner and more focused Mafia <v Speaker 1>game that trades scale for storytelling and world building, and <v Speaker 1>in doing so delivers something quietly special. <v Speaker 2>You know what this sounds like to me, Jane. <v Speaker 1>It sounds like a game that was made with a <v Speaker 1>reduced scope, and that was like a marching order, like <v Speaker 1>make get a game that we can put out in <v Speaker 1>a handful of years. <v Speaker 2>Yeah, And so it was an open world. <v Speaker 1>They focused on the nerve, they focused on the characters, <v Speaker 1>and it sounds like it's good for what it was <v Speaker 1>going for. It sounds like they nailed exactly what they <v Speaker 1>were going for. Now, maybe the gameplay is a bit <v Speaker 1>too simple. I saw that echo to maybe some other reviews, <v Speaker 1>even that the gameplay is mediocre at best. In some cases, <v Speaker 1>some people like it more. But hearing that, you know, <v Speaker 1>the story, the setting, the visuals all hit real hard. <v Speaker 1>I think it's going to go a long way for <v Speaker 1>a game like this. <v Speaker 2>What do you think? <v Speaker 3>Yeah, I unfortunately have this association with Mafia. I've never <v Speaker 3>really explored any of those games, but I have this <v Speaker 3>association with Mafia kind of hovering around this review range, right, <v Speaker 3>not quite a B game, not quite an A game, <v Speaker 3>kind of like B plus to a minus tier of <v Speaker 3>like budget and scope. And you know, for all all <v Speaker 3>intents and purposes, we don't have a GTA six coming <v Speaker 3>out in like the next couple weeks or whatever. So <v Speaker 3>this is this game doesn't really quite have too much <v Speaker 3>competition in the style of game that it's aiming to do. <v Speaker 3>Mind's Eye didn't eat Mafia's lunch. So it's it's great <v Speaker 3>to hear that it is completely okay in folks that <v Speaker 3>are looking to get back into Mafia or folks that <v Speaker 3>just I don't know, I want to explore this crime genre, <v Speaker 3>have something to tie them over until GTA. <v Speaker 1>Yeah, and uh, you know, there's definitely plenty of mob <v Speaker 1>media out there, and it's I think, you know, there <v Speaker 1>is one thing to be said for trying to build <v Speaker 1>an open world where people can explore a time setting. <v Speaker 1>That is what the previous Mafia games did, but I <v Speaker 1>never loved that. <v Speaker 2>It was never great. The fact these games have. <v Speaker 1>Always been mid they've always been pretty mediocre. So them <v Speaker 1>could being like, you know what, let's reduce the amount <v Speaker 1>of exposure we have to that stuff that we can <v Speaker 1>never really pull off, and maybe and maybe by ratio, <v Speaker 1>increased the amount of stuff that we have that was good, <v Speaker 1>which is the setting and the characters and apparently in <v Speaker 1>this game the way it looks. Then, yeah, that that <v Speaker 1>sounds like a good recipe for getting a slightly better <v Speaker 1>version of Mafia. This is not gonna I don't think <v Speaker 1>it's gonna win any awards. I don't think it's going <v Speaker 1>to be maybe anyone's Game of the Year, but I <v Speaker 1>bet it's going to surprise a handful of people who <v Speaker 1>like pick it up because they hear maybe this is <v Speaker 1>for me, And I bet I bet quite a few <v Speaker 1>people be like, we'll be really happy. <v Speaker 2>With the game. <v Speaker 1>I haven't seen any want to say. Anyone say how <v Speaker 1>long it is? If it's like ten to twelve hours, <v Speaker 1>I might try to play this jan longer than that. <v Speaker 1>I don't think I could justify it, but I might <v Speaker 1>start it up if it's around that that long. <v Speaker 3>I have funny enough grub. I think everything about this <v Speaker 3>game really is in the title Mafia the Old Country. <v Speaker 3>Instead of focusing on a giant open world, it's just <v Speaker 3>like a little bit of sicily, a little bit. <v Speaker 1>It's just a bit, a bit of sicily. Yeah it's okay, Yeah, mechanized. <v Speaker 1>It could win a it could win a BAFTA. Yeah, <v Speaker 1>I guess it could. But I don't know how far. Yeah, <v Speaker 1>medi either. I think Ben Starr just gets them. I <v Speaker 1>think at this point, good for him. Yeah, he deserves it, <v Speaker 1>all right, Let's keep moving right along here. PS five <v Speaker 1>sales reach eighty million worldwide in latest milestone. This is <v Speaker 1>from Darren Bonthus at GameSpot. Business is once again booming <v Speaker 1>for Sony, as the company announced that lifetime sales of <v Speaker 1>the PS five console have reached eighty point three million <v Speaker 1>units shipped as of June thirty. This new figure comes <v Speaker 1>from Sony's quarterly results for its current financial year, with <v Speaker 1>the company adding that two point five million consoles were <v Speaker 1>shipped during the three month period, an increase of one <v Speaker 1>hundred thousand when compared to the same period during the <v Speaker 1>previous financial year. <v Speaker 2>That's good news. <v Speaker 1>I think for them to be like that they can <v Speaker 1>you know, this is shipped, not sold, but still that <v Speaker 1>those numbers are related. Hearing that, it's like, oh, it's <v Speaker 1>actually going up a little bit from last year. There <v Speaker 1>was a I think last year it was kind of <v Speaker 1>down year over yere if I'm remembering correctly. If not, <v Speaker 1>it was pretty flat. So then being able to get <v Speaker 1>more in the channel and have the confidence that they're <v Speaker 1>going to be able to sell them, I think that <v Speaker 1>makes it sound like, oh, you know what, PS five <v Speaker 1>in a very good place. <v Speaker 2>Let's continue along here. <v Speaker 1>The PlayStation network has also grown, with Sony reporting that <v Speaker 1>the subscriber number has increased to one hundred and twenty <v Speaker 1>three million users. I don't know if I think that's okay, yeah, <v Speaker 1>PlayStation network. I don't know if that's subscribers a subscriber number. <v Speaker 1>I think that's people who are actively us PlayStation network <v Speaker 1>in one way or another, and that would include people <v Speaker 1>signing into PSN to play a game on Steam or <v Speaker 1>something like that. But it's one hundred and twenty three <v Speaker 1>million active users compared to last year's number. During the <v Speaker 1>same quarter, that number has grown by seven million. They're <v Speaker 1>saying subscribers. Maybe the subscribers, but that's I think that <v Speaker 1>seems pretty high to me. And the game's department. PS <v Speaker 1>five and PS four software reached a combined total of <v Speaker 1>sixty five point nine million copies sold, an increase of <v Speaker 1>twelve point. <v Speaker 2>Three million units year on year. <v Speaker 1>First party games counted for six point nine million and <v Speaker 1>raised an increase arise of nine hundred thousand compared to <v Speaker 1>last year. The future of game sales is also looking <v Speaker 1>increasingly digital, as Sony says that eighty three percent of <v Speaker 1>software sales were digital downloads. Okay, yeah, so the overall, <v Speaker 1>and I read some more on the PlayStation results, it's <v Speaker 1>doing very well. They are their operating income was up <v Speaker 1>like something like one hundred percent or something like doubled <v Speaker 1>or operating income from last year. <v Speaker 2>So profits our way up. Growth is up. <v Speaker 1>They're kind of they're just kind of hitting on all <v Speaker 1>cylinders and a lot of some of these numbers are <v Speaker 1>from when the Switch too launched, not that I think <v Speaker 1>anyone was really expecting the Switch two to come in there. <v Speaker 2>And butt heads with PlayStation. <v Speaker 1>They are kind of on parallel paths, not necessarily intersecting <v Speaker 1>with one another too much. <v Speaker 2>But hey, no, the system's doing very well. It does <v Speaker 2>make me wonder, like. <v Speaker 1>We go back a lot to PlayStation is making choices <v Speaker 1>because they're worried about growth. They are seeing growth, and <v Speaker 1>I don't feel like that growth is because they've made <v Speaker 1>desperate decisions to go in the direction of live service games. <v Speaker 1>Although we'll talk about that in a second. It just <v Speaker 1>seems like people are happy with their PlayStation and are <v Speaker 1>buying them to play video games. <v Speaker 2>Does that sound right to you? <v Speaker 3>I think greub if I was not in this field <v Speaker 3>and I was just kind of doing some increased amount <v Speaker 3>of research from like the normis parentheses not derogatory, I <v Speaker 3>think the PlayStation side of things. With consoles. This is <v Speaker 3>also barring looking at a switch to because switch one <v Speaker 3>switch two always feels like such a specific case. But <v Speaker 3>if you're going to decide between a console right now, <v Speaker 3>between a PlayStation five or an Xbox, I'd probably go <v Speaker 3>for a PlayStation five. Sometimes that's where friend groups are <v Speaker 3>skewing towards the exclusives are going to And now, you know, <v Speaker 3>with Xbox games, and we've talked about it either last <v Speaker 3>week or two weeks ago, where the top selling PS <v Speaker 3>five games are all Xbox games, Why bother getting an <v Speaker 3>Xbox at this point, especially if you just have to <v Speaker 3>wait a little bit for that exclusivity window to close up, <v Speaker 3>and then you can get Indiana Jones, you can get forts, <v Speaker 3>so you can get grounded to Grounded one. It seems <v Speaker 3>like why not get a PlayStation five if you were <v Speaker 3>itching to get a console or upgrade to get a console. <v Speaker 2>Yeah, I mean a couple things. Chat's helping us out here. <v Speaker 1>That one hundred and twenty three million number, one hundred <v Speaker 1>twenty fo ye, one hundre on three million number. That <v Speaker 1>does sound like monthly active users. So just people who <v Speaker 1>are touching PlayStation network in any way. <v Speaker 2>As far as far as what you were. <v Speaker 1>Saying, Jan, yeah, you know what, maybe that's what this is. <v Speaker 1>Maybe this growth that PlayStations is seen is a little <v Speaker 1>bit of the effect of people. <v Speaker 2>Being like, oh man, I like my Xbox. <v Speaker 1>I was an Xbox person, but I'm kind of not <v Speaker 1>seeing the point of continuing to invest in that platform <v Speaker 1>long term. Maybe I should just make the tough choice. <v Speaker 1>And now even more people are defaulting to PlayStation as <v Speaker 1>their home for games. Someone yes, someone else chat says <v Speaker 1>getting to PlayStation five as a you know, quote unquote <v Speaker 1>casual not you know, not a pejorative, is a it's <v Speaker 1>going to be a system that will get you most <v Speaker 1>good games eventually one way or the other, whether they <v Speaker 1>are PlayStation games, third party games that are going to <v Speaker 1>be their day one or now Xbox games that will <v Speaker 1>be there within six months in some cases three months, <v Speaker 1>in some cases less than that. So it does feel <v Speaker 1>like that is having an effect on PlayStation sales in <v Speaker 1>a positive way. So maybe once again, yes, the overall <v Speaker 1>pool of people playing console games is not blowing up <v Speaker 1>and growing and that's and so Sony's still concerned about that. Maybe, <v Speaker 1>and at the same time, they are taking a bigger <v Speaker 1>piece of the existing pot and that's doing really well <v Speaker 1>for them. That is probably the correct assummation of what's happening, right. <v Speaker 3>Yeah, that's my assumption as well. I mean, even talking <v Speaker 3>to my friend, my min normy friends. Again not derogatory, <v Speaker 3>they have all gotten and upgraded to like a PS <v Speaker 3>five pro just because like that is. Yeah, it was <v Speaker 3>astounding to me, and they had assumed I had made <v Speaker 3>that jump a long time ago, but I had to <v Speaker 3>break the news that up I myself barely turn on <v Speaker 3>my PS five But that's because I have a PC <v Speaker 3>that I used to write games, right, But. <v Speaker 1>I guess that makes sense if you're not playing PC, <v Speaker 1>A PS five Pro suddenly becomes like, yeah, that's why <v Speaker 1>I'm playing games all. <v Speaker 3>It makes some sense to me, sure exactly. And you <v Speaker 3>know they're folks that have said this in the chat. <v Speaker 3>There are people that will never touch a PC, no <v Speaker 3>matter how easier it has gotten over the last couple <v Speaker 3>of years. You have something like a Steam deck, you <v Speaker 3>have so many gaming PCs, gaming laptops readily available now, <v Speaker 3>even at costcos pre builts, people will still never touch them. <v Speaker 3>They just prefer the plug and play aspect of a console, <v Speaker 3>and some stuff is scary on a PC. <v Speaker 2>Still. <v Speaker 4>I don't know what a biosy is. <v Speaker 2>I am setting up. <v Speaker 1>One of my old PCs for Emmy because she's reached <v Speaker 1>the point of Minecraft where now she'll play Minecraft, she'll <v Speaker 1>go watch a Minecraft video. Minecraft YouTuber will be like, hey, <v Speaker 1>I'm installing this mod and I'm doing all these things. <v Speaker 1>Then she goes to me, how do I do this? <v Speaker 1>And I'm like, oh, I don't know if Bedrock can <v Speaker 1>do that, we might have to be playing Java. And <v Speaker 1>then she said, well what is that? And now it's like, okay, <v Speaker 1>well let's go get a PC. So I got one <v Speaker 1>of my older desktops, is actually the nct n cXt <v Speaker 1>H one, the one that. <v Speaker 4>Was on fire. <v Speaker 1>Don't worry everybody, I did the fix for it, so <v Speaker 1>it's not going to catch on fire. So I put <v Speaker 1>that in her room and we're setting it up and <v Speaker 1>we're installing Windows and I'm like, I gotta update Windows. <v Speaker 1>She's like Windows, I doesn't that suck because she always <v Speaker 1>hears me complaining about it. So yeah, Like I'm like, oh, yeah, <v Speaker 1>this is gonna be She's gonna be like one of <v Speaker 1>the kids in her class with a gaming PC. <v Speaker 2>That is still going to be a pretty rare thing. <v Speaker 1>I think it's aspirational for like young kids, but I <v Speaker 1>think of anyone who's older who did not get into <v Speaker 1>PC gaming at some point in their life. Yeah, it's <v Speaker 1>it's just a hassle in a lot of cases, so <v Speaker 1>PlayStation five sols. <v Speaker 4>A lot of that, Yeah, one hundred percent. <v Speaker 3>There are so many aspects of like my friends growing <v Speaker 3>up that had so much friction to getting a PC <v Speaker 3>that they completely skipped going down that pipeline and wound <v Speaker 3>up getting like a Mac because of how I don't <v Speaker 3>want to say console ish it is, but like how <v Speaker 3>very closed garden. <v Speaker 4>Yeah, yeah, closed garden. <v Speaker 3>And how less they have to worry about out the <v Speaker 3>miscellaneous things on the internet other than what they partake in. Yep, <v Speaker 3>that's super cool about the gimmick getting into Java Minecraft. <v Speaker 3>That's the least stuff. <v Speaker 2>The real stuff. <v Speaker 1>We're gonna probably be subscribing to some patreons to get <v Speaker 1>some cool mods for that game or something. Yeah, it's <v Speaker 1>it's it's fun to see and it's like I was like, <v Speaker 1>you know, the kids, they're gonna be too young for <v Speaker 1>phones really in any real way for a long time. <v Speaker 1>But a desktop PC, now, that's that's real shit. I <v Speaker 1>do want my kids to be the ones that grow <v Speaker 1>up with desktop PCs. <v Speaker 2>So fun to set that up. <v Speaker 3>Grub, how long you think it's gonna take for the <v Speaker 3>gimmick to go from Java Minecraft to Valorant yeah. <v Speaker 1>See, I I'm worried, like, uh, is she gonna need <v Speaker 1>to get into those Well, she is asking about among <v Speaker 1>us a lot, and so I'm like, I'm like, I <v Speaker 1>need to like set up a playdate where the community comes, <v Speaker 1>hangs out and like plays nice with my kids and <v Speaker 1>we all play among us or something, because I don't <v Speaker 1>know how, like I can try to get our cousins <v Speaker 1>to do it, but that would be me running you know, <v Speaker 1>support to get everybody in the same room and on <v Speaker 1>the like in the you know, we'll get all their <v Speaker 1>devices connected together remotely for their cousins that are in <v Speaker 1>another state. And I'm like, that's such a hass. So <v Speaker 1>I need people that just know what they're doing. So <v Speaker 1>I think we are on the pathway. But I think <v Speaker 1>by the time, like she's eight now, I think by <v Speaker 1>the time she's eleven or twelve will be in Valorant <v Speaker 1>or Counterstrike or something not long after that. So three <v Speaker 1>to four years we go, all right, let's stick with <v Speaker 1>these PlayStation results. Sony CFO says its live service shift <v Speaker 1>is quote not entirely going smoothly, but pledges to carry <v Speaker 1>on and learn from mistakes. This is from Chris Scully <v Speaker 1>and at VGC, and I think this is like interesting <v Speaker 1>to see how they to hear how they break this down. <v Speaker 1>Sony's chief financial officer says the company will learn from <v Speaker 1>its live service failures and a Q and A session <v Speaker 1>following the company's latest financial results, One Color asked its <v Speaker 1>panel of executives for an update on the current status <v Speaker 1>of PlayStation's live service plan and where it sees the <v Speaker 1>issues when it comes to improving its live service games. <v Speaker 1>Sony cf CFO Lynn Taw replied that despite the negativity <v Speaker 1>surrounding Sony's live service offerings thanks to the issues with <v Speaker 1>thanks to the issues with Concord and Marathon, Concord came <v Speaker 1>and went and they had to pull the plug on <v Speaker 1>it big like two hundred million dollar loss, and then <v Speaker 1>Marathon got delayed, she still believes and we'll have more <v Speaker 1>to sale Marathon here in a second as well. She <v Speaker 1>still believes that live service games are worthwhile because they've <v Speaker 1>added a revenue stream that didn't exist for the company <v Speaker 1>five years ago. Last year Concord shutdown and this year <v Speaker 1>Marathon was postponed, So somewhat negative news has been coming out, <v Speaker 1>Tao said, but if we look at the past five years. <v Speaker 1>Five years ago, live service games were almost non existent <v Speaker 1>for PlayStation studios. We now have hell Divers two MLB, <v Speaker 1>The Show and Grant Tresmos seven and Bungee's Destiny too, <v Speaker 1>So we have these four live services contributing to and <v Speaker 1>profits in a stable manner. Tao had earlier noted that <v Speaker 1>during Sony's results presentation that live service games accounted for <v Speaker 1>around forty percent of first party software revenue for the <v Speaker 1>past quarter, and cited this again in her reply for <v Speaker 1>Q one. The live service ratio was about forty percent <v Speaker 1>for the full year. It's a little less, probably between <v Speaker 1>twenty to thirty percent, she said, So in terms of <v Speaker 1>the transformation, it's not entirely going smoothly. But from a <v Speaker 1>longer term perspective, if you look at the changes over <v Speaker 1>five years, you see that there's definitely been a change, <v Speaker 1>and there's a couple things here. Chan yeah, that I <v Speaker 1>think that number is undeniable. Forty percent of the revenue <v Speaker 1>from the last quarter undeniable. At the same time, this <v Speaker 1>whole thing has always felt like them looking at a <v Speaker 1>number and working backward and being like, oh, okay, this <v Speaker 1>is what the live service is doing for someone else. <v Speaker 1>Look at that big number. Here's what it's starting to <v Speaker 1>do for us. We need more of that, so everyone, <v Speaker 1>we need this number to grow. Go make games that way. <v Speaker 1>And that's why I developed, like Benz Studios and Bluepoint <v Speaker 1>and all these other ones internally, when they're pitching internally <v Speaker 1>to try to get their games green lighted, they were <v Speaker 1>pitching live service games thinking that's the way to get <v Speaker 1>money inside of Sony and they were right. <v Speaker 2>And now that has led them into this mess. <v Speaker 1>Where those games I mentioned, the Benz Studio game was canceled. <v Speaker 2>Yeah, the Bluepoint game. <v Speaker 1>Which was supposedly a God of War game, that was <v Speaker 1>also canceled. Right, So there's been more issues than just <v Speaker 1>Marathon and Concord. And at the same time, you can't <v Speaker 1>deny the number. So where does this all leave your <v Speaker 1>feelings about PlayStation and their live service efforts? <v Speaker 3>Grub this still feels very delulu Yes. <v Speaker 4>Where. <v Speaker 3>Yes, on the spreadsheet and you look at a specific column, <v Speaker 3>it is undeniable the amount of profit that is coming <v Speaker 3>from live service games. But as you mentioned, Concord cost <v Speaker 3>how much and now that's all these other projects. <v Speaker 2>A million I guess around there, yeah, two. <v Speaker 3>Hundred million, and all these other projects that may never <v Speaker 3>ever see the light of day or we may never <v Speaker 3>ever hear of that are getting canceled. Those cost money, <v Speaker 3>Those cost time, those cost labor, and that has to <v Speaker 3>tick away at the positive number on that spreadsheet as well. <v Speaker 3>Like I I'm not a numbers guy, I'm not a <v Speaker 3>money guy, but I have to assume that if you. <v Speaker 4>Are earning X, but why is really bad? <v Speaker 2>Uh? <v Speaker 3>That takes away from X being in the green or <v Speaker 3>the black or whatever. And I just none of this, <v Speaker 3>None of this feels sustainable at all. It is one <v Speaker 3>hundred percent like what you said, greb of they see <v Speaker 3>this number and they want to work backwards from it, <v Speaker 3>not thinking about any sustainable practices in terms of labor, <v Speaker 3>in terms of even an audience perspective, like now, anytime <v Speaker 3>a multiplayer game comes out of Sony or has Sony <v Speaker 3>published attack to it, it's going to have that Concord <v Speaker 3>stink on it. There's no way. Like and also with <v Speaker 3>We're gonna get to Marathon in a second, but I <v Speaker 3>can't help but think now with Marathon, is this going <v Speaker 3>to be canceled in two three weeks just like Concord was? <v Speaker 3>Or what is the next thing? What it feels possible, right, <v Speaker 3>It feels very possible. Like nothing feels like a safe <v Speaker 3>bet from Sony if it is like a multiplayer focused <v Speaker 3>live service thing. Even I'm not super tuned into Destiny <v Speaker 3>Too right now, but I feel like Destiny two has <v Speaker 3>had its major ups and downs from like being on <v Speaker 3>the outside of that audience. It feels like the downs <v Speaker 3>have kind of been like lower and lower lately versus <v Speaker 3>up yep, yeah, yeah. <v Speaker 1>And it's, uh, I think that that's all relative because <v Speaker 1>it's like it seems like that Destiny two needed to <v Speaker 1>kind of keep going way up even as they were <v Speaker 1>changing the way that they were doing updates, and it's <v Speaker 1>it's kind of just like it's doing all right. I <v Speaker 1>think people like Destiny Too still for sure. But you know, <v Speaker 1>the Destiny Too freaks that were in my life high <v Speaker 1>Christian they're not like talking about Destiny to the way <v Speaker 1>they ever once were, for sure. You know, we mentioned <v Speaker 1>a bunch of stuff there, didn't even mention. Fair Games <v Speaker 1>was another one that got delayed, right and Jade Raymond <v Speaker 1>left and there's problems across the board now, you know, <v Speaker 1>the second half of that headline was they pledged to <v Speaker 1>carry on and learn from their mistakes. They are saying <v Speaker 1>they're going to keep doing this and that they want <v Speaker 1>to learn from all these mishaps. I just, Jane, I <v Speaker 1>think the issue with that is that we no one <v Speaker 1>ever fucking learns from these things, right, at least not <v Speaker 1>until they go through it themselves, and we're like, well, <v Speaker 1>this is all Sony, right, So they are going through <v Speaker 1>it themselves, not like that the specific team, the specific <v Speaker 1>people on these teams have to go through the experience. <v Speaker 1>This is just me speculating, but it feels this way <v Speaker 1>because we've seen it repeated over and over again that <v Speaker 1>the specific people making these games have to go through <v Speaker 1>the experience of making a live service game to like <v Speaker 1>learn what it requires from them. And even when you <v Speaker 1>do that, you have a studio like Bungee. That's like <v Speaker 1>they did it with Destiny one, and then Destiny two <v Speaker 1>came out and they had some of the same problems, <v Speaker 1>a lot of new problems they couldn't predict, and they've <v Speaker 1>been working on working those out for years and years <v Speaker 1>and years and finding new ones all the time. So <v Speaker 1>just live service just seems like such a hurting of cats, <v Speaker 1>Like because you have this this subscriber base or this <v Speaker 1>player base that is just coming in and spending money regularly, <v Speaker 1>and they have a relationship with the game, and you <v Speaker 1>have to sort of like figure out how to contain <v Speaker 1>those emotions and funnel funnel them towards spending money on <v Speaker 1>your game. And that's so complicated that you can't help <v Speaker 1>but make mistakes every single time. So learn from the <v Speaker 1>ones you've made, for sure, But that I don't think <v Speaker 1>that they're gonna suddenly start making fewer of them. <v Speaker 4>Yeah, grub. <v Speaker 3>And also like these mistakes, they're not gonna hurt these <v Speaker 3>sea level people. It's going to hurt everyone lower on <v Speaker 3>the ladder, unfortunately, and we've already seen that happen. One <v Speaker 3>of the peculiar things in this interview is is that <v Speaker 3>Lin Tao mentions that Grand Tarrismo is a live service <v Speaker 3>game and an MLB the show is a live service game, <v Speaker 3>when I don't. <v Speaker 2>So the show. The show is going to have that <v Speaker 2>ultimate team stuff, right. <v Speaker 1>The ultimate team stuff is e every sports game, and <v Speaker 1>the show has a big one of those, and it's <v Speaker 1>like the baseball game. So I think it does pretty <v Speaker 1>well Grand Trismo. I bet they saw a lot of skins. <v Speaker 2>I guess. <v Speaker 1>I don't know I have not paid attention to that, <v Speaker 1>but yeah, sure, all right. Sticking with the Sony cfo's comments, <v Speaker 1>the Sony CFO promises Marathon will launch this fiscal year. <v Speaker 2>This from Ben Lyons at Game Reactor. <v Speaker 1>Bungie has had a rough go of it with Marathon, <v Speaker 1>as the live project was expected to arrive as soon <v Speaker 1>as this September, but early fan and community impressions were <v Speaker 1>particularly poor, leading the Destiny creator to delay the game <v Speaker 1>indefinitely the time being. It has been a couple of <v Speaker 1>months since the delay announcement came about an update that <v Speaker 1>even surprised the devs, and while there has been no <v Speaker 1>firm information about what we can or when we can <v Speaker 1>expect Marathon, Sony's chief financial officer has commented on the <v Speaker 1>game in a Q and A call following the unveiling <v Speaker 1>of the recent financial report, which affirmed that eighty million <v Speaker 1>piece fives have been sold. After translation via interpreter, CFO <v Speaker 1>Lynn Tao touched on Marathon by promising that the game <v Speaker 1>will launch in this fiscal year, meaning we can expect <v Speaker 1>to be playing the title before the end of March <v Speaker 1>twenty twenty six. So okay, I mean the thing felt <v Speaker 1>like it got delayed, or maybe they explicitly said it <v Speaker 1>but felt like it got delayed because. <v Speaker 2>Those reactions were so poor. It just wasn't It was kind. <v Speaker 1>Of creating at best, like even buzz, kind of negative <v Speaker 1>buzz in a lot of ways coming out of those <v Speaker 1>those play tests, and the idea would be like, Okay, <v Speaker 1>they got to rework a lot of this. I mean, boo, <v Speaker 1>They're not gonna be able to rework anything in that <v Speaker 1>amount of time. <v Speaker 2>It's just going to be some polish here or there. <v Speaker 1>What are your what are your hopes and dreams for <v Speaker 1>the possibilities of Marathon being a success? <v Speaker 3>Ah grab. I just I feel bad for the folks <v Speaker 3>working on Marathon, just because it seems like they're stepping <v Speaker 3>on rakes that other people threw out into the yard <v Speaker 3>left and right. On top of all of the woes <v Speaker 3>of it being poorly received in terms of like playing <v Speaker 3>the game, there's also all the AI art theft happening <v Speaker 3>or just general art plagiarizing happening surrounding Marathon as well. <v Speaker 3>So if Marathon wasn't already facing an uphill battle after <v Speaker 3>the launch and failure of Concord, now they're just climbing <v Speaker 3>up a greasy ladder at this point. Yeah, and I <v Speaker 3>want to see them pull it off. I just don't <v Speaker 3>think I I had any real interest in playing the game, <v Speaker 3>just because I don't feel the need or the draw <v Speaker 3>to play an extraction shooter. This definitely would have been <v Speaker 3>a game that we'd play on a stream and I think, Wow, <v Speaker 3>that was really fun. <v Speaker 4>It looked really cool. Never gonna touch this again. <v Speaker 1>Yep, yeah, I you know this is an extraction shooter. <v Speaker 1>There are other options out there, more established ones that <v Speaker 1>I know will stick around, and and I think, you <v Speaker 1>know again, we're we're talking about having relationships with these games. <v Speaker 1>You kind of want to like, Okay, I'm going to <v Speaker 1>begin investing my time probably money, you know, and maybe <v Speaker 1>try to invest my friends times time into these games. <v Speaker 1>I might start convincing them to want to play with me. <v Speaker 1>Am I gonna want to do that for a game <v Speaker 1>that I'm not certain is going to be a going <v Speaker 1>concern for an extended period of time. <v Speaker 2>Probably not. <v Speaker 1>So It's like these games start to get into these <v Speaker 1>death spirals where the taint and the stank gets on <v Speaker 1>them and you can't scrub them off, and really that <v Speaker 1>just helps it grow faster and faster. <v Speaker 2>Can Marathon overcome that? <v Speaker 1>Sure, if it comes out and it's just ball are awesome, <v Speaker 1>fun to play, it stands it stands up Puncher's chance, right, <v Speaker 1>it could come out and just knock us out and <v Speaker 1>that's it, and the game is a Game of the <v Speaker 1>Year contender and all this stuff. It just doesn't feel <v Speaker 1>like we're anywhere close to that right now. <v Speaker 4>No, not at all. <v Speaker 3>And I see folks in the chat talking about how <v Speaker 3>Halo Infinite was able to pull it off after getting delayed, <v Speaker 3>and that delay being massive. But I think where Halo <v Speaker 3>Infinite and Marathon are different is that Halo is like <v Speaker 3>a household name versus Marathon. And sure Marathon is like <v Speaker 3>an older game and older than Halo, But how many <v Speaker 3>people are have been clamoring for another Marathon versus have <v Speaker 3>the familiarity of exploring or checking out another Halo title. <v Speaker 2>Yeah, it's. <v Speaker 1>Well again, we'll see, Well, you know, this game coming <v Speaker 1>out before the end of March. They're going to have <v Speaker 1>to re enter do sit here in the next several <v Speaker 1>months and try to change the story, so they also <v Speaker 1>have to figure that out. <v Speaker 2>I just don't look forward. <v Speaker 1>I don't envy them the position that they're in and <v Speaker 1>having to figure that all out. <v Speaker 3>I also, you know, we will say that folks that <v Speaker 3>check out extraction shooters are a very niche audience, but <v Speaker 3>that niche audience still is very big, but they tend <v Speaker 3>to find the game that works and stick with that <v Speaker 3>versus Yeah, and for whatever reason, most of those extraction <v Speaker 3>shooters aren't the triple A kind. They are like the <v Speaker 3>Double A or like completely India out of left field, <v Speaker 3>or games that have been around for like ten. <v Speaker 1>Years, yep, exactly. And it's you know, it feels like <v Speaker 1>that space solidified very fast. You know, there's there's a <v Speaker 1>spectrum of the way that these genres solidify, where like <v Speaker 1>auto chests, you were in the heart of that, I <v Speaker 1>think a little bit. And it was and that was <v Speaker 1>like a gold rush that was never a real gold rush. <v Speaker 1>There was three that got made very fast, and then <v Speaker 1>a bunch of others from a bunch of other studios. <v Speaker 1>Those three kind of battled it out and then at <v Speaker 1>the end it seemed like team fight tactics ended up <v Speaker 1>taking the crown there. Yeah, And now that that gold <v Speaker 1>rush was over in a blink of an eye. And <v Speaker 1>then there's you know MMOs where it's like, oh, you know, <v Speaker 1>people are gonna keep trying it and slowly realize it's <v Speaker 1>just going to be a World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy <v Speaker 1>fourteen a handful of others. It does feel like for <v Speaker 1>Extraction Shooters it's somewhere in between those two where you <v Speaker 1>could try to chase a trend, maybe you could make <v Speaker 1>some money doing this, but the reality is it feels <v Speaker 1>like the choices have already been made. Yeah, and it's <v Speaker 1>not gonna be like batter or. I don't think it's <v Speaker 1>gonna be like Battle Royale, where it's like we think <v Speaker 1>this is done and then Apex Legends comes along and <v Speaker 1>it was able to get fifty million players in. <v Speaker 2>A couple of weeks. <v Speaker 1>It's like that was a very different time, very different thing. Yeah, <v Speaker 1>and I don't expect that to be repeated by Extraction Shooters. <v Speaker 3>It's also so hard grub for these bigger publishers and <v Speaker 3>bigger developers to be as agile as like a one <v Speaker 3>to twenty person team like it is. It was wild <v Speaker 3>to see Slay the Spire blow up, and then to <v Speaker 3>see so many Slay the Spire clones come out, and <v Speaker 3>then we're seeing the same exact thing happening with Blatro <v Speaker 3>right now. I was playing like a demo for a <v Speaker 3>Dice game last night, where like the background was that <v Speaker 3>same like wobbly Warbly use background as Blatro, but now <v Speaker 3>with Dice, and you know what. I was all in <v Speaker 3>on it, of course, but it is easier for those <v Speaker 3>smaller teams to take that idea and spin it into <v Speaker 3>something else versus a gigantic behemoth or unless you're not, <v Speaker 3>unless you're Fortnite, Fortnite could pull it off whatever. <v Speaker 2>Right, Yeah, Fortnite is gonna have Bilottro here pretty soon. <v Speaker 2>I'm sure. Yeah, you're right that they're like, because that's <v Speaker 2>just old school game development. <v Speaker 1>That's just you know, ladies and gentlemen in their garages <v Speaker 1>making making a game because they were inspired by another game, <v Speaker 1>and they're like, can I do this? Can I make <v Speaker 1>can I try to? You know, take these ideas. I <v Speaker 1>just want to play around with these ideas. I'm so inspired, <v Speaker 1>And then they end up making something that builds off <v Speaker 1>of that. Slightly different, but clearly you could see the <v Speaker 1>inspiration and we all just go like, Yeah, that's that's <v Speaker 1>Doom Clones, that's Maze games based off pac Man, that's <v Speaker 1>Pong games going back to that, and then going all <v Speaker 1>the way back to a Space War and Computer Space <v Speaker 1>and all those games. <v Speaker 2>The very beginning. <v Speaker 1>It's you know, when we start talking about two hundred <v Speaker 1>million dollar games chasing trends, it's like, oh no, that's <v Speaker 1>that's too much money to put into something that is <v Speaker 1>going to be following someone else. They already have all <v Speaker 1>that money. If you want to do this for two <v Speaker 1>million dollars, maybe you can make that work. I don't <v Speaker 1>I don't even know if that's possible. All right, let's <v Speaker 1>take a break. Is this Seat <v Speaker 1>Taken is coming to Switch as well? <v Speaker 2>This is one. <v Speaker 1>This is one of the game you talked about on <v Speaker 1>the BombCast this week, right, Jan Is this Seat Taken? <v Speaker 4>No? <v Speaker 1>Was this not you? Someone brought this up and Mike <v Speaker 1>mentioned it was you. I'm like, I heard about it <v Speaker 1>somewhere and I can't remember where. <v Speaker 4>The guys are just attributing all sorts of games to me. <v Speaker 1>Now, yeah, well with most games that I don't understand <v Speaker 1>are jam games. Now the trailer reveals Wholesome Puzzler is <v Speaker 1>out on Nintendo Switch today, so you can get is <v Speaker 1>the Seat Taken today? It's that game where you're telling <v Speaker 1>ship shapes where they could sit on a bus, which <v Speaker 1>isn't I don't think is problematic. That's little kiddie. Big <v Speaker 1>Cities City is getting even bigger. There's gonna be an <v Speaker 1>update later this year. I actually forgot it was later <v Speaker 1>this year and told my kids it's out now, so <v Speaker 1>they were trying to play it, like where is it dead? <v Speaker 1>Where's I going to customize my cat? Which is one <v Speaker 1>of the things you could do in this update. <v Speaker 2>It's not out yet. Kids are gonna have to wait <v Speaker 2>till later this year. <v Speaker 1>Let's see Content Warning is coming to Switch and Switch <v Speaker 1>to Landfall Games, viral co op centered horror game. Content <v Speaker 1>Warning will finally make the jump to console when it <v Speaker 1>comes to Nintendo Switch and Switch to Sometimes twenty twenty six, <v Speaker 1>A first look trailer was shown during the Nintendo Indie <v Speaker 1>World Showcase, and Mike made the really good point of <v Speaker 1>you know, content Warning is the one with the circles <v Speaker 1>for faces, and you sort of put a emotes or <v Speaker 1>emoticons on there to make your face. <v Speaker 2>What if you just replaced that with the game chat <v Speaker 2>camera and. <v Speaker 1>We can see our faces on those things at I mean, <v Speaker 1>I listen, I don't know if I'm going to play <v Speaker 1>content warning on the switch. <v Speaker 2>If they did that, I'm playing content warning on the switch. <v Speaker 2>That sounds awesome. <v Speaker 1>I hope they're able to do that, but they did <v Speaker 1>not show off anything along that Along those lines, Ballpit <v Speaker 1>is a brick breaking game for the Switch and Switch To. <v Speaker 1>It's from Devolver Digital and Kenny Sun and Friends. It's <v Speaker 1>a survival roguelike is the underlying genre there. That's out <v Speaker 1>October fifteenth, with a switch To version set to come <v Speaker 1>out this fall. <v Speaker 2>Oh Ultimate Sheep, Oh yeah, go ahead. Oh no. <v Speaker 3>I just remember seeing this and being very hyped about it. <v Speaker 2>It looks really cool, so does Ultimate Sheep Raccoon, which <v Speaker 2>do you know what that is? Jans that sound familiar. <v Speaker 3>The combination of words feels like something I'd be into. <v Speaker 3>Oh wait a minute, it's a chicken Horse. <v Speaker 2>It's a follow up to Ultimate Chicken Horse. <v Speaker 1>The athlete named Ultimate Sheep Raccoon is coming to Switch <v Speaker 1>and Switch To this holiday. It's a blink and You'll <v Speaker 1>It has a blink and You'll miss it trailer, but <v Speaker 1>basically it just showed it off. Instead of just being <v Speaker 1>a running platform, you're on bikes. It's a Trials, Trials, <v Speaker 1>but Ultimate Chicken Horse. <v Speaker 2>I'm so excited. It looks so good. <v Speaker 4>Oh, I'm so ingrub Yeah, we're. <v Speaker 1>Going to play a ton of this, and honestly we <v Speaker 1>should go play some more Ultimate Chicken Horse to get <v Speaker 1>ready for it. But yeah, they're saying holiday twenty twenty five. <v Speaker 1>I think they might have said winter twenty twenty five, <v Speaker 1>but twenty twenty five, so later this year. A couple <v Speaker 1>board things Glaciered was a It said it's an it's <v Speaker 1>an action RPG where you play as a bird species <v Speaker 1>that has evolved to go back into the water and <v Speaker 1>swimming under this glacier. And it's also you know RPG, <v Speaker 1>so you're upgrading your character and as you do, you're <v Speaker 1>doing your attacks. Numbers are popping off. It looked really interesting. <v Speaker 1>They also said it's like JRPG inspired in some ways, <v Speaker 1>although we didn't quite see that either way. I thought <v Speaker 1>the game looked very interesting. It feels like one of <v Speaker 1>those ones that was trying to get out in the <v Speaker 1>first year of the switch to to get on to <v Speaker 1>glom onto the excitement, and I think it might be <v Speaker 1>able to do that. I'm looking forward to it. They <v Speaker 1>finished the Indie World with a sizzle reel of a <v Speaker 1>bunch of other games. Noodle Cake and Pine Creek Games <v Speaker 1>have a Winter twenty twenty five game called Winter Burrow <v Speaker 1>Undusted Letters from the Past. It's from ToJ Productions and <v Speaker 1>Five Minute Labs. It's coming in October. Tiny Bookshop which <v Speaker 1>looked like a puzzle game where you get boxes of <v Speaker 1>books and then you have to like place them on <v Speaker 1>the shelf in a correct way to maximize your bookstore value. <v Speaker 2>Didn't quite understand it. <v Speaker 1>But it looked it looked good. I'm like, I want <v Speaker 1>to figure this game now. Caves of Cud is coming <v Speaker 1>to Switch this winter. That's from kit Fox Games in <v Speaker 1>Freehold Games. Strange Antiquities is from Iceberg Interactive and Bad Viking. <v Speaker 1>It's coming out September seventeenth. Pre Orders are available now. <v Speaker 1>Opus prison Break is coming in the fall. Go Go Town, <v Speaker 1>which just looked like straight up animal crossing with more farming. <v Speaker 1>That is from Cult Games. In Prideful Sloth is coming <v Speaker 1>in the spring, and then UFO fifty is out later <v Speaker 1>today on the Switches. <v Speaker 2>Whoah, Yeah, so it's happening. <v Speaker 1>And that felt like, you know, we had a couple <v Speaker 1>that we were like UFO fifty, Haities two maybe, and <v Speaker 1>then of course Holow Night's Silk Song, those last two <v Speaker 1>which we you know, we were going back and forth. <v Speaker 2>It's like they probably won't be there, but they could. <v Speaker 2>Well they weren't. <v Speaker 1>UFO fifty however was there and it's out now basically <v Speaker 1>oh yeah, so okay, people are saying, yes, it is <v Speaker 1>already out, so there you can go and go out <v Speaker 1>and get it. Jennet was a decent Indie World showcase. <v Speaker 1>Some games that I'm ready to go play as soon <v Speaker 1>as they're available for sure. <v Speaker 3>Yeah, any other like highlights for you personally, Grub. <v Speaker 1>I think for me it was like Hurdling was one <v Speaker 1>that definitely stuck stuck out. I'm like, I just like <v Speaker 1>the idea of these mystical like beast They kind of <v Speaker 1>look like wooly mammoths a little bit, but with the <v Speaker 1>weird legs. I just like the idea of being a <v Speaker 1>character that has to kind of maneuver yourself around to <v Speaker 1>make sure these other creatures on the screen move in <v Speaker 1>a certain way, Like oh that kind of has that <v Speaker 1>it's like human fung shway, Like I want to, you know, <v Speaker 1>make my energy move in a certain direction to get <v Speaker 1>ther energy to move in a certain direction. Yes, it's <v Speaker 1>Tamber and then Little Kittie Big City Update. <v Speaker 2>I want to go back to that. We I always <v Speaker 2>enjoy playing that with the kids. <v Speaker 3>There's a there's like a couple of indie titles that <v Speaker 3>I wish I personally got an update on that. I'm <v Speaker 3>surprised didn't make it onto the Indie World Showcase. Oh <v Speaker 3>but hey, okay, yeah, and. <v Speaker 1>Then of course Ultimate Sheep Raccoon. We will play the <v Speaker 1>hell out of that one that's available. <v Speaker 2>Okay, let's move along here. <v Speaker 1>Red Octan Games is a new rhythm game developer working <v Speaker 1>on something that isn't Guitar Hero, but sure sounds like it. <v Speaker 1>This is from Ben Lyons at Game Reactor. The rhythm <v Speaker 1>game scene has been quiet for years, largely as players <v Speaker 1>have shifted away from owning and using physical peripherals that <v Speaker 1>take these titles to the next level. It has been <v Speaker 1>years since a Guitar Hero or rock band arrived, and <v Speaker 1>we're desperate for more, which is what makes the founding <v Speaker 1>of Red Octan Games all the more exciting. This is <v Speaker 1>a developer that is made up of excuse me, of <v Speaker 1>several rhythm game veterans from the Guitar Hero franchise. The <v Speaker 1>studio is being headed up a former Never Soft production director, <v Speaker 1>Simon Ebager, while it's supported by Charles and Kai Huang, <v Speaker 1>two of the original Guitar Hero founders. Otherwise, we can <v Speaker 1>expect a melting pot of developers that include exceptional new <v Speaker 1>generation developers, creators, and community leaders from the global rhythm <v Speaker 1>gaming scene, all while the studio takes a community built <v Speaker 1>a development approach as well. In terms of the game <v Speaker 1>that Red Octane is making, they don't have anything to <v Speaker 1>say yet. In an accompanying blog post, they said this <v Speaker 1>game won't be Guitar Hero, DJ Hero, Guitar Freaks, or <v Speaker 1>rock Band. This is something new, a rhythm game built <v Speaker 1>with love by people who care, with the community at <v Speaker 1>its core. <v Speaker 2>In this fast changing modern world we all live in. <v Speaker 1>We firmly believe that the expert here is the community <v Speaker 1>and a new generation of development talent, the folks that <v Speaker 1>have kept the lights on these last few years. So <v Speaker 1>cool to hear that these people are back at it <v Speaker 1>and focus on rhythm games. <v Speaker 2>What would you what do you want from this right now? <v Speaker 1>Because I'm like it has been a minute, So if <v Speaker 1>they just want to say it's not guitar Hero. <v Speaker 2>But it's guitar Hero. I would probably be interested in that. <v Speaker 3>I'm trying to think, Grub, We're what what kind of <v Speaker 3>rhythm game do do we get into if we are <v Speaker 3>not getting a big honkin chunk of plastic just because <v Speaker 3>of you know, production costs of that and and space <v Speaker 3>issues with that. <v Speaker 4>But maybe people. <v Speaker 3>Want that again, maybe maybe people are totally into that. <v Speaker 3>I was jokingly thinking of moroccas just because like moroccas <v Speaker 3>are fun and small, but I know I wouldn't mind <v Speaker 3>like like a drum pad and just like mashing away <v Speaker 3>at one of those. <v Speaker 4>That'd be cool. <v Speaker 3>I think we need more rhythm games, Grub, and I <v Speaker 3>do enjoy that it is not just you know, seasoned <v Speaker 3>veterans of the genre, but also they're they're bringing in <v Speaker 3>newer talent because rhythm games are still around, they're just <v Speaker 3>mostly in the arcade scene these days. <v Speaker 1>Yeah, you know, at awesome games done quick, Like we <v Speaker 1>went to the arcade and played a bunch of those <v Speaker 1>rhythm games that I've had only seen in like Instagram <v Speaker 1>reels or whatever and TikTok and being able to go <v Speaker 1>in there and try that stuff. Out' say, oh yeah, <v Speaker 1>this stuff rules. The big you know, spinny thing where <v Speaker 1>you can move your hands around. <v Speaker 4>Yeah, the washing machine looking one, yeah. <v Speaker 2>The washing machine one. <v Speaker 1>Yeah, that was great. It's like, yeah, if they could <v Speaker 1>take ideas like that. I do think there maybe should <v Speaker 1>be bespoke controllers though, moroccos, whatever, sambas as I sometimes <v Speaker 1>call them, just give us something along those lines, because <v Speaker 1>I think that's one of the things about rhythm is <v Speaker 1>you want to feel like you can do something with <v Speaker 1>your body, and creating a bespoke controller for that helps <v Speaker 1>facilitate those feelings. But I guess they don't necessarily have <v Speaker 1>to do that. I would like I would like just <v Speaker 1>a new DDR game with a new pad or. <v Speaker 4>Something like that. <v Speaker 2>That would be cool as well. But we'll see. They're <v Speaker 2>they're trying. <v Speaker 1>They're trying to get us the idea that they are <v Speaker 1>going to have new ideas because they have these younger <v Speaker 1>developers in the letting the community drive the way. So <v Speaker 1>maybe it'll be something we can't even predict, and I <v Speaker 1>will welcome that. It's just cool to hear that they're <v Speaker 1>getting back to the rhythm games. <v Speaker 3>Give me Guitar Hero for the DS somehow, again. <v Speaker 1>Yeah, bring that back ye solo controller for our phones. Yeah, <v Speaker 1>I never actually played that. I should, I should say, <v Speaker 1>if I could track that down all right. Battlefield six <v Speaker 1>Open Beta is off to a very hot start amidst <v Speaker 1>some server hiccups. <v Speaker 2>This is from Eddie McCoo at game Spot. <v Speaker 1>Battlefield six Open Beta went live today and it's putting <v Speaker 1>up big numbers in its early access stage before the <v Speaker 1>beta becomes more widely available this weekend and next. On <v Speaker 1>Steam alone, the Battlefield six Open Beta reached more than <v Speaker 1>three hundred and fourteen thousand peak concurrent players. The open <v Speaker 1>beta is also available on PS five and Xbox Series <v Speaker 1>X and S, along with the EA app for PC, <v Speaker 1>so the Steam numbers reflect just a portion of the <v Speaker 1>beta's total audience. Given the huge amount of people trying <v Speaker 1>to play PlayStation or the Battlefield six is open beta, <v Speaker 1>the servers are struggling somewhat. Some players have reported matchmaking issues, <v Speaker 1>and the developers say players can restart the game client <v Speaker 1>to help improve things. Battlefield six's open beta is using <v Speaker 1>server cues to help mitigate demand, with Battlefield Studios announcing <v Speaker 1>it is working on a substantial increase in server capacity <v Speaker 1>to help meet the demand. <v Speaker 2>Open beta is our biggest validation yet. <v Speaker 1>We want to see at grand scale how this holds <v Speaker 1>up well, then assess the outcome and hear the feedback <v Speaker 1>and iterate as we always do and we have have <v Speaker 1>always been doing. Producer David Serlin said. Players have also <v Speaker 1>reported weapon balancing issues, with many saying shotguns are too <v Speaker 1>powerful powerful right now. But that's just a bunch of <v Speaker 1>people whining. We'll see what actually happens with that game. <v Speaker 2>Okay, early demand is there, for sure. <v Speaker 1>It does seem like that, you know, that weekend where <v Speaker 1>they're like, here's the details about Battlefield six, here's a <v Speaker 1>bunch of people playing it. Did the trick and did <v Speaker 1>get a lot of people excited. I want to play there. <v Speaker 1>I want to get in there and check it out <v Speaker 1>myself and see what's what all the hypes about this <v Speaker 1>is just nothing but good news though, right, yeah, great. <v Speaker 4>News, grub you know. <v Speaker 3>Unfortunately Battlefield in the last couple of years has not <v Speaker 3>been the most positive in any regard, whether it's single <v Speaker 3>player or multiplayer or lack thereof of single player. But hey, <v Speaker 3>great that they were getting this validation with the audience. <v Speaker 3>I just hope that audience lightens up if Battlefield six <v Speaker 3>has to introduce miscellaneous ip as skins and that they're <v Speaker 3>okay if it's not just. <v Speaker 4>Generic John Thurgood Marshall. <v Speaker 1>Yeah, they're a good marshal on the battlefield. <v Speaker 2>Everybody watch out. Yeah. <v Speaker 1>I think that even if they try to like keep <v Speaker 1>it grounded, they are still gonna want to bring in <v Speaker 1>and we're talking about the skin packs where they promised <v Speaker 1>they would keep things grounded. Even if they do that, <v Speaker 1>I think they're still gonna want to use IP so, <v Speaker 1>like military ip probably will pop up in there. Arnold <v Speaker 1>Schwarzenegger out in the jungle hunting down the predator. <v Speaker 2>Yeah, yeah, he could show up. <v Speaker 1>Yeah, I don't Yeah, it doesn't sound like the fans <v Speaker 1>are or that. <v Speaker 4>Would they be okay with? I don't know, Uh, Colombo. <v Speaker 1>Everyone's okay with Colombo. Colombo could show up and they <v Speaker 1>would they would be excited about that. <v Speaker 4>Dice. <v Speaker 3>If you put a monk skin, a Tony Shaloub monk <v Speaker 3>skin and Battlefield six, I will think about getting the game. <v Speaker 1>Put a Pikachu in there. I want to see Pikachu <v Speaker 1>with a with a machine gun. <v Speaker 4>That'd be great. <v Speaker 1>Yeah, Like I said, nothing but good news so far, <v Speaker 1>for the game, and honestly, you know, having this many <v Speaker 1>players and the servers being like, okay, we can't quite <v Speaker 1>keep up with this. There was a time when Battlefield <v Speaker 1>had like some of the worst online problems of any <v Speaker 1>game ever. I think it was Battlefield four. We don't <v Speaker 1>like talk about this ever anymore, but Battlefield four, for <v Speaker 1>like a year straight was just unplayable online for a <v Speaker 1>lot of people. I covered that non stop, like writing <v Speaker 1>about it, and it took them forever to fix it. <v Speaker 1>So it's like the fact that they're not anywhere near <v Speaker 1>something like that. Obviously they've learned from those issues. It's like, okay, yeah, <v Speaker 1>it just sounds like everything is working in Battlefield six <v Speaker 1>is favor. We'll see how this turns out. Okay, let's <v Speaker 1>see here. We got, yeah, a couple more stories here. <v Speaker 1>Bikinis are good business for street fighters. This is from <v Speaker 1>Chris Melchin. It's dual shockers. <v Speaker 4>Probably. <v Speaker 3>All I'm hearing is that we have to now make <v Speaker 3>a calendar calendar for GB. <v Speaker 2>And this is how the GB bikini calendar. <v Speaker 3>We The business doesn't need to be saved right now <v Speaker 3>at least, but this is how we save the business. <v Speaker 1>Secott and the Bikini Pack launched at the same time, <v Speaker 1>and the current player count concurrent player count on Steam <v Speaker 1>almost doubled into twenty four hour period basically. And I'm <v Speaker 1>sure Scott helped, but I bet the tan Lines on <v Speaker 1>CAMMI helped even more. Yeah, that was People were very <v Speaker 1>excited for this again. Good Business day Z passes one <v Speaker 1>million players on PlayStation Plus day one. <v Speaker 2>This from alex Co at Dual Shockers. <v Speaker 1>Yeah, the game popped up on PlayStation Plus and they <v Speaker 1>said one point three million people downloaded it and or <v Speaker 1>activated it on their PlayStation Plus account in one day, <v Speaker 1>and they said three hundred thousand people were already playing <v Speaker 1>it on day one, like three hundred thousand new people <v Speaker 1>from PlayStation So I really do want to check back <v Speaker 1>in on Daisy. Have you ever played that? <v Speaker 4>I want to say that I have. <v Speaker 3>I think I've downloaded at one point because of morbid curiosity, <v Speaker 3>but I've never been brave enough to check it out <v Speaker 3>for an extended period of time. But I would check <v Speaker 3>it out with us. <v Speaker 1>Yeah, I think it'd be worth it for us to <v Speaker 1>like do a couple of streams there and see what <v Speaker 1>it's like. There's That's one of those games where emergent <v Speaker 1>storytelling can just be so much fun and I want <v Speaker 1>to see what antics we can get up to. Finally, <v Speaker 1>the Roger Xbox ally we get we have the release <v Speaker 1>date thanks to Bill bil Kuhn. As a reminder, Microsoft <v Speaker 1>is under a BDS movement, potential boycott and do without <v Speaker 1>what you will. They are are responsible for death allegedly <v Speaker 1>in Gaza. They are contributed to that and making money <v Speaker 1>from it, So do with that information what you will. <v Speaker 1>We are still going to cover the news here or <v Speaker 1>there when we can. A few days ago, we revealed <v Speaker 1>the opening date for pre orders for the Roger Xbox <v Speaker 1>ally handheld consoles. Sales will begin on Wednesday, August twentieth, <v Speaker 1>twenty twenty five, on Yes See on the sidelines of <v Speaker 1>Games Comp twenty twenty five, which will be held in Cologne, Germany. <v Speaker 1>We also confirmed the price, which will be five hundred <v Speaker 1>and ninety nine euro for the base model and eight. <v Speaker 2>Ninety nine euro for the top of the line. Xbox <v Speaker 2>Ally x SO. <v Speaker 1>Sales will begin August twentieth, and the thing will be <v Speaker 1>out in October, so let's see here. October sixteenth is <v Speaker 1>the confirmed release date for the Xbox Roger Ally. You <v Speaker 1>know this is going to be the probably their big <v Speaker 1>thing that they do have at Gamescom. I'm going to <v Speaker 1>be interested to see how they come out and tell <v Speaker 1>the story of why this thing is going to be <v Speaker 1>worth around it thousand US dollars. <v Speaker 2>Oh boy, Grubb, Yeah, it's that's gonna be tough. <v Speaker 1>I'm just not I'm just not interested in it really <v Speaker 1>that really at any price, but especially at that price. <v Speaker 4>Yeah. <v Speaker 3>I was entertaining the idea of a PlayStation portal last <v Speaker 3>night for no real good reason, and then I remember <v Speaker 3>how much they cost, and then I remember, and then <v Speaker 3>I saw this new story and remembered it's the Xbox <v Speaker 3>Roger Ally is gonna cost like a thousand plus. <v Speaker 4>No, thank you, Grub, I'm sorry. <v Speaker 2>I just saw it. <v Speaker 1>I just saw the super chat from Tim Nicholas, one <v Speaker 1>of our RS friends. <v Speaker 2>Just give me a style. I got you on the calendar. <v Speaker 4>Oh Tim, uh what was that? What is that? Grub? <v Speaker 4>What was that video game magazine that had. <v Speaker 1>Like Ultra Game Players Issue one eleven. I was just <v Speaker 1>looking at this the other day. I did not realize <v Speaker 1>that that was the last issue of Ultra Game Players. <v Speaker 1>The last issue of Ultra Game Players is their bikini <v Speaker 1>magazine issue where they had characters from not even like <v Speaker 1>B level games, like C level games dressed up in bikinis. <v Speaker 1>And then there was a few there was like Laura <v Speaker 1>Croft and the girl from uh Pandemonium or whatever it <v Speaker 1>was called. Yes, so let's let's do it in that style. <v Speaker 3>Was there a KSM or was it game Fan that <v Speaker 3>had like a swimsuit issue? <v Speaker 1>No, Ultra game Players had the had a had a <v Speaker 1>swim suit issue. Look it up Ultra game Players one eleven. <v Speaker 1>Those other ones might have as well. PSM was also <v Speaker 1>the same company, so I would be surprised if they <v Speaker 1>had one as well. Yeah, people were saying PSM it <v Speaker 1>was the same creative team for both magazines. But the <v Speaker 1>girl from Daikitana I think it was the cover model <v Speaker 1>for Ultra Game Players one eleven. There you go, so, yeah, <v Speaker 1>that's the style we wanted in. Just go do me <v Speaker 1>in the same pose that that she's in on the cover. <v Speaker 4>Oh I I am one of PSM. <v Speaker 2>Yes, okay, what? <v Speaker 1>Oh boy, let me do I'm gonna google PSM bikini issue. <v Speaker 2>Take a look there. Oh yeah, I remember this one. <v Speaker 1>Yes, okay, Gods the two thousand and five swimsuits, special. <v Speaker 2>Video games. <v Speaker 1>Okay, that does it for the headlines. We got a <v Speaker 1>poll question that we got to get to. <v Speaker 2>Let's do that right now. <v Speaker 1>I have the results of poll questions right over here <v Speaker 1>on this tab from yesterday. Do you want a new <v Speaker 1>Super Mario Brothers collection on switch that's a capital N. <v Speaker 1>Forty nine percent said yes, fifty one percent said no. Listen, <v Speaker 1>these games get a lot of guff I think, you know, <v Speaker 1>I'm sure that's maybe lower than some other collections would be, <v Speaker 1>but that's still a lot of people being like, yeah, <v Speaker 1>I want that those games would. <v Speaker 2>Do just fine on the Switch if they put them <v Speaker 2>into a collection. <v Speaker 1>That's based on the rumor from yesterday that for Mario's <v Speaker 1>fortieth anniversary Nintendo's going to gather up the new Super <v Speaker 1>Mario Brothers games that are not already on the Switch <v Speaker 1>and put them into a new collection, which I would welcome. <v Speaker 2>That'd be fine. All right. <v Speaker 1>We have a new pole question that we should just <v Speaker 1>get to right now. <v Speaker 2>Have you ever played day zis jan that now? I'm <v Speaker 2>asking you yes or no? Tell us have you played? Daisy? <v Speaker 2>Very curious about that. <v Speaker 1>We'll get the results of that talk about it on <v Speaker 1>Game mess Mornings here on Giant Bomb tomorrow to end <v Speaker 1>out the week, like trying to keep the days. <v Speaker 2>It is Thursday, tomorrows Friday. <v Speaker 4>Shouldn't tomorrow be the Bomb twelve? <v Speaker 2>So this is the way we do it. Yes, I've <v Speaker 2>been like working this out. <v Speaker 1>Jan We'll wrap up the poll question for Thursday on <v Speaker 1>that show. We won't ask a new poll question, so <v Speaker 1>there won't be a pole question to get to on Monday. <v Speaker 1>And then the last thing we do on Games Mornings <v Speaker 1>on Friday is the Bomb twelve. <v Speaker 2>So that's the way this is gonna work. <v Speaker 1>Poppy, all right, Yeah, I think that means we got <v Speaker 1>to talk about what's happening on Giant Bomb. I'm gonna <v Speaker 1>bring up the calendar jam. But let's wait, that's a <v Speaker 1>different calendar. What else do we have happening? Oh, we <v Speaker 1>got the voicemail dump truck not too long from now right. <v Speaker 4>Yes, voicemail. <v Speaker 3>A lot of moving around and shaking of the schedule <v Speaker 3>this week, folks, boy smail dumb truck is popping off <v Speaker 3>in thirty minutes. <v Speaker 4>Oh, I gotta go collect calls. <v Speaker 3>But also later today we are hopefully wrapping up Pip <v Speaker 3>my record. <v Speaker 2>We definitely are. Yeah, he's got to stop, although maybe <v Speaker 2>he shouldn't extend. My game is up next. <v Speaker 1>Apparently Steff saw the costume and she told me that <v Speaker 1>I should have saw it because apparently I brought it <v Speaker 1>into the house and it wasn't in a box. But <v Speaker 1>I just like, she gets a lot of packages, you <v Speaker 1>like a lot of things delivered. She gets some deals <v Speaker 1>and stuff like that. Often she gets gifts for the <v Speaker 1>kids that we're gonna give them a Christmas and we <v Speaker 1>hold on to them because she finds a good deal <v Speaker 1>on them and we kind of just set them aside. <v Speaker 2>She saves a lot of money. It's great. <v Speaker 1>So I don't even pay attention now to the stuff <v Speaker 1>that's coming. I just bring them in, put them in <v Speaker 1>a pile, and set them down. And she's like, you <v Speaker 1>must have assumed it was something for me. I'm like, <v Speaker 1>I don't even remember anything about any of the packages, <v Speaker 1>so apparently I'm seeing it. <v Speaker 2>She's laughing at it again. <v Speaker 1>So and then Mike also pointed out that I'm not <v Speaker 1>gonna look cool. <v Speaker 2>So yeah, damn got the look cool. Mike got the <v Speaker 2>look cool. Have you seen the costume? <v Speaker 3>I've seen what I think they're sending you. Grub I <v Speaker 3>think it's impossible for you to not look cool. <v Speaker 2>Okay. <v Speaker 3>If anything, I'm looking forward to the Jerem upload or <v Speaker 3>updating the lineup of everyone. <v Speaker 1>Yeah, okay, yes, fair enough, all right, super chat here <v Speaker 1>from a grant. Grant NP says, look at that first <v Speaker 1>page of that Ultra Game Players one eleven. Uh, we'll <v Speaker 1>do I'll do that on We'll do that on our <v Speaker 1>own time. Everyone go do that right now. Go to <v Speaker 1>Google Ultra Gameplayers one eleven. I think it's on archive <v Speaker 1>dot org. If you can't find it on a on <v Speaker 1>which you might call it on the Video Game History <v Speaker 1>Foundation's archive. <v Speaker 2>All right, Jim, we talked about the schedule. <v Speaker 1>Tomorrow, we'll be back. We'll be back with UPF. We're <v Speaker 1>gonna play Sunderfolk. I might try to play some Mafia <v Speaker 1>as well. Before Sunderfolk. Maybe just play that for an <v Speaker 1>hour or. <v Speaker 3>So, maybe in my own time or on this web site. <v Speaker 3>I'm gonna go play the new season of Fortnight. <v Speaker 2>It did it did like update today, right. Power Rangers <v Speaker 2>are in there. <v Speaker 1>Yeah, yeah, if you want to play, if you want <v Speaker 1>to get in there, you're gonna get the battle pass <v Speaker 1>to make sure you can unlock all the power ranger stuff. Yeah, <v Speaker 1>you get put on your switch to play it in <v Speaker 1>your your free time. <v Speaker 2>We're on it that way. <v Speaker 3>I don't like playing uh shooters that aren't Splatoon on <v Speaker 3>a switch. <v Speaker 2>Yeah, fair enough. I don't try. They probably have the <v Speaker 2>motion controls in there. Try that. Try Splatoon controls. All right, <v Speaker 2>more happening on Giant Bottom. <v Speaker 3>Sorry to ruin the outro, but someone had outed me <v Speaker 3>on Blue Sky saying that the dragon dagger emote is <v Speaker 3>indeed there. <v Speaker 1>All right, well we gotta let Jan get to it <v Speaker 1>right away. Everybody, so let's wrap the show up. We <v Speaker 1>did the pull question, we did everything else. So Jan, <v Speaker 1>I'm gonna say thank you so much for talking with me. <v Speaker 2>About video games. <v Speaker 1>Man. <v Speaker 2>I really appreciate it. <v Speaker 1>Thank you all for watching and listening. You are the <v Speaker 1>best audience in gaming. Until next time, have a good one, <v Speaker 1>take care of yourself, and goodbye.
