I mean the fact that it I mean it didn't take that long, but with two weeks to go, they've clinched and it gets your Dodgers, Alana. They got to celebrate in Dodgers Stadium. What a feeling it was for the Phillies might get to play them again here, not too in the distant future, so they better enjoy this. They're gonna be They have two more games in this series. Speaker 2: Their biggest challenge is can they get the monkey off their back of does anybody show up in the playoffs? I mean last year Strom and Hoffman got waffled and they were lights out in the regular season. Their lineup went to sleep besides Costianos and Harper. This year they made a concerted effort to not strike out as much. Their strikeouts are down, as it always happens, their home runs are down. Obviously, we know it's a historic season from Schwarber but their home runs are down. It's gonna be it's gonna be the very tired, easy narrative. They go on and they win the World Series, it's because they cut down their cut down their strikeouts and they still hit home runs. If they don't win the World Series, to me, it's gonna be the injury of Wheeler, ineffectiveness of NOLA, and they didn't hit enough home runs.

It's a massive I mean, look at the other teams that are in the playoffs and you look at their holes, like just going just going to the Mets because they're you know, they're trying to get in. They have bullpen issues. Phillies have kind of solidified that they kind of had a good and they added an elite closer who's been elite, and I get it. He gave up the home run. It's kind of a little concerning that he gave up two home runs in Dodger Stadium. Maybe they need to change the frequency on their little on a little PitchCom thing, or just not throw a backup hanging knuckle curveball to Andy Payes, who hammers off speed pitches that are strike off feed pitches. But did you just accuse the Dodgers of stealing Pitchcomb signals?

You can only give up two home runs a year, so somebody has to know something. Sarcasm, So the other thing that you have to make sure. Now I forget even where I was, Oh, why Doron is so important to this team? They didn't have a closer? Could Strom have closed the game out? Sure? Could Kirk Ringer close the game out? Sure? Is Alvarado a better choice if he hadn't gotten popped for steroids? I don't think so. So I think it was a blessing in disguise, and they got that. They got the guy that they wanted to trade for to trade deadline. From what we hear, they took him out from underneath the Mariners grasp who they already had a closer. So I think it it His value to this team was obviously because he's done well, he's blown once. Well, he's blown two saves now, but he is he's that lockdown closer at the end of the season. At the end of the season, he solidified himself with this team because coming in he uped his strikeout percentage before the season started. I mean not before the season, during the season from last year. So you wonder before okay, he just puts you know what happens if he gets in the playoffs and he's just got to put balls in play punch outs. He's shown he can get the punch out. So I think it's a huge, huge, huge bonus for the Phillies that they picked him up in a trade deadline crats.

Right But with those three outs, his twenty and twenty six option has vested at seven and a half million, pending a physical exam following this season. How key has he been to what the Phillies have been able to accomplish. I want him to wash his hair and I want him to stop looking so much like Nicholas Cage. But he's been big for this club? How big in your opinion?

Speaker 2: Him and Tanner Banks for the lefties have been outstanding. You don't forget about Tanner Banks as the mass term has been an all star and you're struggling in the postseason. But Rob Thompson has trusted Tanner Banks a lot. So now they have two lefties with that, I mean, forget Alvarado, he doesn't even count because he doesn't even matter. But Strom and Tanner Banks have been outstanding, so they mean a lot to this team. Anytime a team has not one, but two lefties that can come in and give them innings and get three outs, get lefties in righties out, you can't put a value on that.

Should we give them more credit, more love? I mean, just in general, just baseball folks in general, for the ridiculous schedule that we have to do day in and day out. The grind that is a one to sixty two Eric. Nobody.

It is a very It's a tough travel schedule for some teams. This one's a grind. We'll see how it affects the Phillies throughout this road trip, because that was the first day of their road trip.

I think you have to after the the long plane flight and then the I guarantee you they did some sort of a celebration last night, whatever that celebration entailed. But yeah, you give some of them the rest. But it's changed now though, because you used to have forty guys. Now you only have twenty eight guys. So it's not like you can give the whole team arrest, but definitely probably throw the backup catcher in there. You probably give a couple guys a day off here and there and let some of your starters just take a day to chill, relax and be ready for tomorrow.

Losing their their top option at dh left field wherever they want to put him is a huge blow. He's one of the best bats in the American League's basically had a wasted gear because he's missed most of it and something new for Astros to not talk injuries, because you know, he had that hand thing and and nobody could get figure out why he was out for so long. So it's a bad it's a bad thing for the Astros and they're missing a bad man if he's out for a while. Hey, did you did you wear moldeds? Did you wear moldens or metals? I always wear moldeds. Bob Nightingale, they win eight to one, and despite waving that white flag at the trade deadline, as I just mentioned, one and a half games behind the Mets, the Arizona Diamondbacks blow the game open. How about this, though, I mean, it's so you're saying there's a chance. I know, Ken just said the Mets get in. I'm hoping it's the Diamondbacks. But what say you, Eric Kratz?

Speaker 2: I agree? I mean, I think it's going to be the Mets for the same reasons that that Ken said. Yes, I get it, the Diamondbacks one, Zach Allen did what he's supposed to do as what was supposed to be their best pitcher this year, or one of their best behind Corbyn Burns. They just they don't have They don't have enough, in my opinion, to make up the ground. It's always way harder to make up the ground. I get it, the Mets faltered and so they gave up a lot of ground. But it's so hard to just play that much better than a team. And they got to play two games better than the Mets the rest of the way, and I don't think they have the pitching or kept enough of their offense, even though they are scoring without Nailor and Aohenio.

You Savage, Wow, I don't know if he could be in one of those multi inning guys that we all hear about. But I think I think this guy can be a weapon for him somehow, Someway. What about a closer? I know they have Hoffman, but I mean, what about someone that can help Hoffman in certain situations that would look be good, that plays a hundred with angle and the split and a slider and a curve ball it plays. I can't believe he took that from me. I was gonna say, what if he closes out big games? What if he because of the fact that, I mean, we look back at in history. Okay, who closed it out for the Cardinals as a as a young rookie, Wayne Wright? What was he throwing? He was throwing from a high angle. He would that curveball was going straight down and he got angle on his fastball. I'm not saying they're the same guy. Wayn Wright wasn't throwing one hundred miles an hour and this is an extreme high angle. But Trey with that type of arm, with that unique style, that really the only way that you can as a team layoff stuff is you have to say you see him up in the zone because anything down is going to be a ball, except it's ninety nine, So you got to get it started early. Like I was super impressive. I had heard a little bit about him from one of my buddies, but that was that was impressive.

With that being a little unorthodox at the time of year, a young kid making his debut and where we're at in the season and the standings. It's good for everyone else to hear to see what he can do. I mean, is there something to be said about him being a little bit naive to what it is to be in the big leagues and just shoving.

The only thing I worry about with him being a reliever is he hasn't done it. He hasn't done it. So if I was them, and I think with their rotation, I would say, all right, all right, you're gonna get some bullpen outings to try to see if you can do this and give us two innings, three innings if we needed, or an inning or come in the eighth and get us to Hoffmann. I think that if I was the Blue Jays, that's what I would try and do, especially if they're thinking about putting him on the postseason roster, because I think he could be a weapon in the bullpen. Brandon Finnegan. Brandon Finnegan, people might not remember him twenty fourteen, came out of college, was in a college World Series, pitched in the World Series. He was a short, little lefty, went through ninety four ninety sevens with a sinker, so completely a different type of pitcher. The game now gets guys prepared for these moments as much as you can be prepared. His stuff plays, and as long as Pete Walker, who's been in Toronto for twenty years, lets him know what he needs to do his role when he's in the when he's in the postseason, I think he one hundred percent makes that roster just based on stuff, then the fact that he didn't look overmatched. I'd like to see him against a better lineup than the Rays, but the raise the Rays get hit sometimes and he shut them down.

I have a problem when guys that played the year before and just didn't do good get comeback player of the year, like the grom was out out and what he did this year. So I would say it's played last year, he pitched last year, the Graham he pitched how much? Yeah, but George played the whole year and just wasn't good.

And finally Pap gave me credit for saying, wait, Trevor's story is going to be an unbelievable player for this Boston Red Sox club. He could very well be in that conversation with George Springer for the American League Comeback Player of the Year. Is that fair?

Speaker 2: Another most improved? I mean, it takes a long time to come back from shoulder injuries. Again, I'm trying to look up how many at bats Trevor's story had last year. Okay, so he played, he didn't play that much at all. So he was coming back from that shoulder surgery last year and he came back and didn't play, So yes, he could definitely, especially since he's been in one hundred and forty six games. I did. Dudes playing every day, and there's a reason he got paid what he did. Everyone's gonna be like, oh, he's inflated numbers because of Colorado. I don't know. There's very few dudes that are that skinny and can hit the ball as hard as he can hit it.

But like you sit there, they're not gonna be in the top two. You know who the top two are. But for George Springer to do this, really, he's only had one other good year in Toronto and that was his All Star year, I think twenty two. And I think it helps this young team that a veteran guy is gonna come up clutch and they're like, oh, this dude's been in the playoffs and he was nails in the playoffs when he was at the Astros. So it's a cool story for sure.

Speaker 1: All Right, guys, this is a little weird. So Adam mccalvey does a great job for MLB dot com talking about the Brewers. Covers the Brewers on a daily basis. The Brewers sent along clarification today that no, Bob Euker did not leave behind a letter in the event the team made it back to the postseason. It was written by Pat Murphy in Uker's style, meant to honor the man who loved these celebrations so much. It's a little bit disingenuous to me, guys, Pat Murphy this morning on six twenty WTMJ on the letter of the team from Uker in quotes, I just thought it was a great tribute to Bob. He's been at the forefront of our minds. It was an opportunity to honor him and connecting the players to Brewers' history in the city of Milwaukee. AJ, what's your take.

Speaker 2: I don't get why we did this. I don't understand and listen, Murphy is trying to be cute. I get it. Maybe it wasn't the right way to go about it. But the social media team for the Brewers that jumped on this and made everyone feel like this was a real thing is where probably went wrong, because you don't need Maybe Murph wants to do this, he reads us to the team and doesn't put it out there. But for the Brewers social media team to say a letter from Pat Murphy make everyone including us feel like this was real, and then it was two days later that it came out that it was fake is crazy to me that I just I don't know. I like Murph and I know he's trying to be cute, and he's trying to do these things and motivate and keep you in their prayers. But why not just have Christian yell at you love, Bob Buker or Pat Murphy come up and say a word, or Mark Antinasio, the owner, come up and say a word. Hey, Yuke's watching us, guys, he's looking down upon us. He's proud of you, guys. We know this, he loves you. That would have been cool. But to try to fool everybody, it just it didn't seem right to me. It felt weird. And now that's come out. I'm glad they're honest about it, but it felt weird in the moment, and something I lost in translation. You know, maybe the maybe the social media team thought it was an actual letter and they were posted. I don't know. I feel like, yeah, it just felt a little weird, especially since Antanasio gave Murph the letter and Murph started reading it. Anyway.

But anyway, I regress to the top five baseball movies of all time. I think The Natural is up there. I think Major League because that's a good comedy. My favorite, personally is For the Love of the Game. I know it's Morny and whatever. I think Bull Durham's in there, and then everybody's fourth. You have to you have to try to our fifth one. You have to try to throw one of the other ones in there. From my kid days, I think Rookie of the Year is there. Although The Rookie. The Rookie is a solid movie, but you know, Disney maybe made it a little hokey, like the guy was throwing one hundred from the left side, so it felt like more like nuke l Loos than anything. But there's some good baseball movies out there, but The Natural is the top five for me.

I know, I know, AJ just said Jeremiah Johnson was the only like real Robert Redford movie that he really knew about. But think about I mean Busch Cassidy in the Sundown, I mean, this is certainly before our time. It came out in nineteen sixty nine. But the Sting nineteen seventy three, the way we were, I mean, that's that's a classic. All the President's Men in nineteen seventy six, Three Days of the condor The Natural. Obviously we just talked about that. Sneakers, the Horse Whisper, Spy Game, All is Lost, The Walk in the Woods is pretty good. The Old Man and the Gun, I mean, Robert Redford guys, that's I don't know, just makes me sad. It makes me sad. What do you like about the Yeah, the Natural was it? I think you know Roy Hobbs like he was forty six, by the way when he made that movie, which is insane.

Every every kid had a wonder boy, right, And I was looking for the tree that was struck by lightning. And when he looks at me, looks at the kid and goes, hey, was it Bobby? Pick me out a winter Bobby? I mean, one of the great lines in a baseball movie of all time. And he goes and gets them, you know, the wonder boy, and he hits the home run and that whole thing. I mean, it was just it was just so nostalgia. Again, if you like baseball, just make you like baseball a little bit more. If you're a baseball If you were a baseball player and you were allowed to work on the lathe in shop class, the first thing you would have done is try to make a bat, and they would have been your wonder Boy. As far as my generation, my buddies shop class, we rarely were allowed to go on the lathe, and I get it now as an adult. I'm like, why would you get eighth grader seventh eighth graders on the lathe? But somebody spinning a baseball bat that's going to be way too freaking heavy, terrible wood to do it with. But you did it, and you rode on their wonder Boy.
