The Best of The Dan Patrick Show
On today's Dan Patrick Show, DP and the Danettes discuss how the 2026 Patriots need to prove that this season wasn't a fluke. Former NFL Defensive Lineman Mike Golic Sr. sees a more difficult schedule looming large for the Patriots and places the Seahawks' defensive performance in the same realm of the '85 Bears. Basketball Hall of Famer Reggie Miller looks back on the Malice at the Palace following yesterday's Pistons-Hornets brawl and discusses potential expansion for the NBA.

00:00:00 Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio. 00:00:05 Speaker 2: It's our one on this Tuesday, Dan and the Dan Edge Dan Patrick Show. My starting lineup, A guy who failed as driving test twice, the Minister of humor. 00:00:15 Speaker 3: That's where we're going to start the show. 00:00:17 Speaker 4: I did not know that about you. 00:00:19 Speaker 3: Seventy five seconds in. 00:00:21 Speaker 2: I know, but I did not know that. And you dropped that on me this morning, and you were kind of recounting what happened, and you blamed the driving instructor. 00:00:29 Speaker 5: Yeah, there was something about a catern and then there was something about not stopping completely for the stop sign. Next thing, I know, all my friends are celebrating passing it on their first time, but on that third one, I got my certificate. 00:00:39 Speaker 3: I was ready to roll. 00:00:41 Speaker 2: Seaton's here, Marvin's here, Paula yours truly in the back room, guys is Well, we'll talk to Reggie Miller a little bit later on the NBA talking about expansion, and it's no surprise this summer they'll talk about Seattle and Las Vegas. Mike Golick Senior will join us. I'm gonna ask him, fifteen years now, what is the one thing we talk about Super Bowl sixty and I don't think it'll be about the football itself. I think it'll be about the halftime show age seven to seven to three. DP Show email address Dpatdanpatrick dot com Twitter handle. We have a play of the day, Poul question stat of the Day Operator Tyler is sitting by. He'll take your phone calls. Those of you who thought that the Patriots were imposters because they had a really easy schedule to make it to the Super Bowl, well you'll be happy to know New England's schedule is out and it's not pretty. It'll be tough if they get back to the Super Bowl. Nobody's going to complay this schedule. But keep in mind they had a last place schedule. They didn't choose their schedule. They had four wins. The NFL wants parody and they give you they I would say reward if you want to use that word. Is a schedule that's a little more user friendly, but that's how the league works. Style points, irrelevant, results are everything, and the beauty of the NFL is there's always a reckoning. There's going to be a new one next year or a couple. But New England has a first place schedule and there's no favors here, no shortcuts. They got the Bills, Lions, Seahawks, Packers, and Chargers. If they're for real, then they're going to prove it next year. But you start to look at the games that are on the road for the Patriots next year. They're at Buffalo, at Chicago, at Detroit, at Kansas City, at the Chargers, at the Dolphins, at the Jets, at the Jags. 00:02:55 Speaker 4: At the Seahawks. This will not be easy. 00:02:58 Speaker 2: And this is a situation where you might even see New England not even make the playoffs next year. Sometimes that rise that fall is just as dramatic. All right, Seaton Pole question. I also have Seattle's schedule here. Now it doesn't tell you which weeks, but it does say that they will be at Arizona at Denver, at the Raiders, at the Rams, at the Eagles, at the Niners, at the Commander's at the Panthers. So it doesn't stand out as Wow, that's going to be some tough sledding for the Patriots. Yes, especially the road games. All Right, whole question for hour one is going to be what seton? 00:03:37 Speaker 6: Plus, you do have that sort of super Bowl hangover effect, you know that is a real thing. You lose the Super Bowl, you usually don't do as well the next year. 00:03:46 Speaker 4: Yeah, and you wonder what the hangover is going to be. 00:03:48 Speaker 2: Sometimes we'll look at a team that wins the Super Bowl and talk about the hangover. I really think the hangover is for the Patriots because you got Drake May. I don't know if he's going to have surgery on his shoulder. You got an offensive line that needs short up, and you've got to get some skilled position players, and you have a tougher schedule now. But you got a great head coach, and you know the fluctuation. If I look at the quarterbacks who were taken when Drake May was taken, and we talked about Jayden Daniels and Caleb Williams and bow Nicks and Michael Pennix and JJ McCarthy. They're like stocks because we're going that guy is way up here, he's Navidia. And then all of a sudden, Jaden Daniels comes back to Earth, and then there's a little bit of Caleb Williams going up there. Hey, bo Nicks is doing something. 00:04:37 Speaker 7: Oh. 00:04:38 Speaker 2: JJ McCarthy got to play in a game. And then you had you know what was going on in New England with Drake May. And if I said let's redraft right now that class, if you were going to redraft that class, Caleb Williams going one. Jaden Daniels, I don't know how healthy he's going to be. I don't know how healthy he's going to be throughout his career because of his size and the way he plays. Drake May almost won the MVP. BO Nicks stays healthy. I think he's playing in the Super Bowl. JJ McCarthy, Jerry's out. Michael Pennix, it's going to be his team. Jerry's still out. But if you said let's draft redraft, I'm probably taking Caleb Williams. But I'm taking Caleb Williams because I think that he has the right person. 00:05:33 Speaker 4: Ben Johnson in his ear. 00:05:36 Speaker 2: Now, if you say I'm gonna end up with Drake mayor Jaden Daniels or bow Nicks, Okay, those are nice consolation prizes. But you start to look at this and we want to go that guy's going to be great. So Jaden Daniels maybe the greatest rookie season we've had for a quarterback, Caleb Williams up and down, Drake May out of nowhere, uh Bo Nicks maybe the most experienced him, and Jayden Daniels, A J. McCarthy not a big fan. Michael Pennix. I like the story, but I wouldn't have gone up in the draft to go get him. So you come down to probably four quarterbacks, and I don't know if it seems like a foregun conclusion. Drake May would be the guy because he came a couple of votes away from winning the MVP. But after the Super Bowl and after the playoffs, I would say that stock is cooled down considerably. I would say it probably be Caleb Williams definitely, then Drake May, Jade and Daniels, Bo Nicks and JJ McCarthy and Michael Pennis. 00:06:36 Speaker 4: Good luck with that. Yeah, it's weird. 00:06:39 Speaker 6: I feel exactly the same way. I don't really have a huge problem with that draft order still today, even if it played out exactly the same and Drake May goes third instead of second or. 00:06:48 Speaker 4: I totally get it. It all steals seems right to me, Yeah, PAULI. 00:06:53 Speaker 8: Yeah, it is. 00:06:54 Speaker 9: Weird though, because if this were doing the show in August, it'd be Jade and Daniels and then to be a big drop to those other. 00:07:01 Speaker 4: Guys, yeah, big drop. 00:07:02 Speaker 2: Yeah, But it's weird to be the runner up for the MVP and having people question you going into next season. Usually it's man, that guy's building on something, and I would say there's probably a lot more doubters than when the postseason started or even the Super Bowl, But that can fade away depending on what kind of season you have next year. But now you have a schedule that's far more demanding, and now we're going to find out maybe who Drake May is and who the Patriots are, at least in the short term. But they do have money, they have you know, draft picks here, and once again you got a great coach. The question is you've got to start to fill in some blanks here that we're very, very wide open in the Super Bowl. 00:07:48 Speaker 4: But I do think we'll look back. 00:07:49 Speaker 2: On this Super Bowl fifteen years from now and it won't be about one particular play, not about one particular person, unless it's about Drake May because I this will be about the uproar of the halftime show Bad Bunny. 00:08:05 Speaker 4: I do. 00:08:05 Speaker 2: I think that's what it's going to be because the game was not transfixing. The game didn't give you something where like even today, normally the Tuesday after the Super Bowl we talk about things that we didn't get too on Monday, but there isn't anything on Tuesday that we didn't get too on Monday. 00:08:24 Speaker 4: Yeah, So are you saying. 00:08:25 Speaker 6: That in ten years from now the question will be who won the Bad Bunny Super Bowl? 00:08:30 Speaker 4: Maybe it might be. 00:08:31 Speaker 2: It might be, but you know, just so much attention to the halftime show, and it almost took away from the super Bowl because we kept waiting for storylines. When we were in San Francisco, It's like, what is the storyline here? You know, the big storyline became Tom Brady. He didn't have a dog in the fight, and all of a sudden, it's like we spent two days on Tom Brady. Now Drake May and the shoulder. Hey, I'm feeling great. See that's one of those where it's tricky and this is something the NFL does not want to talk about. And I talked to somebody yesterday at the NFL Home Office and I said, you know, Drake May told everybody that his shoulder was fine. 00:09:14 Speaker 4: And he goes, I know where you're going with this. 00:09:16 Speaker 2: I said, Hey, there's billions of dollars, billions of dollars gambled on the Super Bowl, legally and illegally. You got to make sure that we know exactly what's going on. You have to be transparent. Now you don't want to tell Seattle, hey, this shoulder is really bad, but you're in business and you've got to be transparent with those how many you know people were betting on the Patriots not knowing if I mean, what if it comes out Drake May has torn out a torn LABORHM or something or you know, something maybe not as serious, but you get shot up before the Super Bowl and uh, you know. The person I spoke to at the Home office said it's not going to be a topic of conversation. 00:10:03 Speaker 4: I said, okay, I'm just saying I'm just. 00:10:04 Speaker 2: Bringing it up because it's billions of dollars that were bet and I don't know if that hampered Drake may at all. But you know, if you're saying your shoulder's fine and you're on the injury list, but then you keep telling everybody you feel great, I know you want to do that, But as a gambler, shouldn't we know as much as maybe the Seahawks know. Maybe they're not going to be that transparent, but I do think this is where we blur the lines with the amount of money that's gambled, and it goes down a really really dark rabbit hole here. 00:10:42 Speaker 9: Yeah, PAULI, one more thing I just found for you. You mentioned how do Super Bowl teams that lost do the following season. In the past ten years, four of the ten Super Bowl losers did not make the playoffs. Historically, sixty eight percent Super Bowl losers do make the playoffs the following season, So it's right on par there about sixty percent in the past ten. 00:11:03 Speaker 4: Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't make the playoffs. 00:11:05 Speaker 9: The past two years, the Chiefs did not make the playoffs, and the Niners the year before they didn't make the playoffs. 00:11:10 Speaker 4: After they lost. 00:11:11 Speaker 2: Yeah, and there'll be three or four teams that come out of nowhere, and there'll be three or four teams that disappeared. Happens every single year. All Right, we'll come up with a poll question and we will get phone calls as well. Each seven to seven three DP show. There was a brawl that broke out with the Pistons Hornets game last night. 00:11:31 Speaker 4: And this is how it sounded. 00:11:34 Speaker 10: Jad on the dribble, right back down on Diabate and a whistle. They're gone, dia Bate. This boy, dia pante is he's facing suspension here, there is no question about it. And now Bridges throws a punch. 00:11:55 Speaker 3: Now just came out. 00:11:57 Speaker 11: Oh man, that's a downy brook. 00:12:00 Speaker 3: There goes. 00:12:00 Speaker 12: After review, fighting files have been assessed to the following players, Diavate and Bridges from Charlotte and Duran and Store from Detroit. 00:12:08 Speaker 3: Those four players have been ejected. 00:12:10 Speaker 4: From the game. 00:12:11 Speaker 2: That's courtesy of the Pistons Radio Network. According to the NBA Rulebook, during fights or altercations, players who aren't subbed in must stay on the sidelines in the immediate vicinity of their bench. The league also stipulates that violators will be subject to an automatic one game suspension without paying and an additional fine of fifty thousand dollars. Because punches were made, contact was made, suspensions will be happening for a couple of these players. I would do the following if I was the NBA, and maybe they do this, I don't know. I would show the Rudy tom Janovich punch that Kermit Washington nearly killed Rudy tom Janovic, and I would show that to every team at the start of the season, just to remind them. You never worry about the person in front of you. It's the person to the side or behind you, and that's when you get some real damage done. You know, most basketball fights are kind of skirmishes, pushing, shoving, But when punches are thrown, man, I'd have no tolerance whatsoever. I'd sit you down for a week and I'd let you think about it, and I'd make you watch that Rudy tom Janovich documentary every day, just so you don't do something stupid and throw away your career. It's gonna cost you a couple hundred thousand dollars, and I know you want to protect your teammates now, I don't know if I would have taken the Duncan Robinson route where he was kind of on the outside and he just kind of turned around and he just what are we doing here? 00:13:44 Speaker 4: You know, you can. 00:13:45 Speaker 2: Act like you're helping, you're you're in in the mix there a little bit, Yes, Marvin. 00:13:51 Speaker 13: You have to even all right, So I've been in a friend group that's got into a fight before. 00:13:55 Speaker 8: You can't come on, guys, no, you had you. 00:13:58 Speaker 4: I know you. 00:13:59 Speaker 11: You're in it. 00:14:00 Speaker 4: I know or any I know you don't want to. 00:14:02 Speaker 8: Be in it, but you are, or at least you have to pretend. 00:14:04 Speaker 4: You have to try to break it up. 00:14:07 Speaker 8: Like, come on, guys, let's not let's not do this. 00:14:09 Speaker 2: Well, I don't know if that's how your voice is gonna sound. Come on, fellows, hey, guys, come. 00:14:13 Speaker 4: On stop it. 00:14:18 Speaker 11: Now. 00:14:18 Speaker 2: That old school basketball that happened a lot. I don't want to go back to old school basketball to see that. I have no problem with an enforcer. You know, it's weird hockey. You fight and you can go to the bench for five minutes and you're good. All right, you're gonna fight. You go over there, all right? Now, come on back out. NBA that ain't the case. And I go back to that San Antonio Spurs Phoenix Suns. 00:14:44 Speaker 4: What was that conference final? And that's when I went toe to. 00:14:48 Speaker 2: Toe with Commissioner Stern because you had some guys from the Phoenix Suns trying to protect Steve Nash when he got, you know, banged into the scorer's table and you had a Mari Stodomiron and players go off the bench, and that costs the Phoenix Sun's chance to go to the NBA Finals. You got to do it. You got to protect the integrity of the game, the players. But when you start throwing haymakers here, man, I never would ever worry about the guy in front of me. It's the guy that I don't see, and that's when things happen. That's when things go south. 00:15:20 Speaker 4: All right. 00:15:21 Speaker 2: Mike Golick Senior in an hour, Reggie Miller a little bit later on as well, Kansas drops number one Arizona, and that was without Kansas' best player, Darren Patterson, who wasn't playing. By all accounts, it feels like the NBA scouts still think he is the number one player in America, but he's been in and out of the lineup he had flu like symptoms. But at Fall Gallon and if you ever get a chance to have that atmosphere. As I went there and saw Jason Kidd and cow play, I flew out on my own dime because I wanted to see a game at Fall Gallon and it did not disappoint this great, great atmosphere. And I go back to when I was listening to Tom Brady do the Seahawks playoff game and when he was talking about Clint Kubiak, and I came in the next morning with these guys. I said, Brady's going to hire the offensive coordinator for Seattle and Fritzy's like, how do you know that? I said, he kept calling, he said my guy, and I go, oh my god. He's right in front of us. He's going to be the head coach of the Raiders, and they officially swore him in. He is Mike Golick Senior. He is co host of Golick and Golick on FANDUE Sports Network and you can listen to him every single day in parting with Right Mike. 00:18:02 Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, that's it. 00:18:03 Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, we'll go with that. 00:18:05 Speaker 2: Okay, fifteen years from now, when I say what do you remember about Super Bowl sixty, you will say what defense? 00:18:15 Speaker 16: Just like I say about when Tampa Bay one years ago, Baltimore one at years ago, the Bears in eighty five, even though they had Walter Payton and Jim McMahon, those teams were led by defense. 00:18:29 Speaker 11: This one was led by defense. 00:18:31 Speaker 4: I'm gonna remember as bad Bunny hah hah. 00:18:37 Speaker 11: So I watched that. I was out there for the week. 00:18:41 Speaker 16: Obviously with my son Michael I do the show with and where he's thirty six, I'm sixty three, so we're obviously have different tastes in music. And as I said, this is not going to make me become a bad Bunny fan. I'm not going to download his music. It's nothing I've ever listened to. But I thought it was entertaining, you know, it's it's we watched it. We were at the stadium pregame, and then we went back to the hotel for the game. Halftimes is a made for TV event. It's not for the people in the in the stadium. And I thought, even though I didn't understand any of the words. I thought it was a was a good show. Again, that's the that's the most I'll ever listen to Bad Bunny. But I thought it was produced well. 00:19:28 Speaker 2: Yeah, but I wonder you know when people say, well, I didn't understand it. 00:19:31 Speaker 4: It's you know, singing in Spanish. 00:19:33 Speaker 2: And if puv Roddy would have been the halftime guest, would people say, hey, can you can you sing in English there? 00:19:41 Speaker 16: Well, well, that's that's what I had said too. People go to opera all the time. They don't understand the language. Even even some of the songs that are in English. 00:19:50 Speaker 11: We don't understand the words. 00:19:51 Speaker 16: We know the chorus to them, but we don't understand the words. So I listen. We know this all got politicized. I for the show value. I get it. From the NFL side. You've conquered the United States. You know, here you have somebody who's one of the biggest entertainers in the world and you're trying to go international with your sport. 00:20:13 Speaker 11: I get it. 00:20:14 Speaker 16: And without getting into the political side of anything, I just looked at it for the sheer entertainment and the reasons the NFL brought him in. 00:20:23 Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, and I'm not really familiar. I'm familiar with you know who he is, not his music like he no, you know he but he's selling out wherever he goes. Yeah, you know, too large stadium crowds. So I have great respect for that. You know, the Drake May fall out Usually after the Super Bowl, you know, one of the two teams seems to have a little bit of a drop the following season. I'm looking at the Patriots schedule. They got a first place schedule. Now they're gonna be on the road, So nobody's gonna say they backed in if they make it back to the playoffs and or the Super Bowl. But what concerns would you have with what we saw with sort of Drake May CJ. Stroud kind of wait a minute, where did this come from? You know, concerns going into next season? 00:21:13 Speaker 16: Well, I mean, listen, Drake May, you have to see what the next set. And you're right to bring up CJ. Stroud, you know, because we saw him have such an excellent rookie year and then struggle for the next couple of years. I still think Drake May will be fine. He's got to hold onto the ball better, for sure. Offensive line remember he had two rookies at left guard and left tackle, and when Will Campbell came back from injury, he just wasn't wasn't the same guy. They have an excellent defense. The defense played well in the Super Bowl without question. And I think there's a reason I think New England, you know how they do the too early prediction for in the odds for next year's Super Bowl. 00:21:55 Speaker 11: I think New England was like tenth. 00:21:57 Speaker 16: Seattle was first, LA was second, the Rams were second, and I think New England was tenth. And I think a lot of that is they're going to have a much harder schedule this year. 00:22:07 Speaker 2: But I was trying to understand what Josh McDaniels was doing or not doing. If I know the left side of my line, Mike is, you know porous, Why don't I have somebody over there just helping out. If I'm gonna throw, let me give Drake May time to throw. 00:22:26 Speaker 16: Listen, I agree, I absolutely agree, and quite honestly, the biggest issue I have with the game plan is they didn't run the ball more. They have a two headed monster on ramondre Stevenson and Traveon Henderson. They combined ran it thirteen times, and this was a nine to nothing game at halftime. It's not like New England was out of this game. I'm surprised they abandoned the run. You keep hammer of the run, hammer of the run. You may gain a yard, two yards, three yards, then you pop one for fifteen, then you gain a couple, then you pop one for twenty. I was somewhat amazed that they gave up on that when they did, knowing you were going to pass more, and then putting your your you know, your left side of the line. The rookies on an island, both Jared Wilson and Will Campbell. 00:23:16 Speaker 2: I thought New England could steal this when it was only nine to nothing, and it should have been twenty one to nothing, just the way Seattle was playing, and I thought, just just get something, get some momentum, and they never got any rhythm whatsoever. Now all of a sudden, I mean, when you think about it, Drake May had the most passing yards in one quarter in the history of the Super Bowl and had a bad game. 00:23:40 Speaker 16: Oh yeah, I mean listen, at that point, Seattle was giving them everything they could underneath, and they were getting some yards after the catch, and that really padded Drake made stats because. 00:23:51 Speaker 11: Neither quarterback was great in this game. 00:23:53 Speaker 16: I mean Sam Donald completed fifty percent of his passes at some point in this game. Dan the New England offense had to be on the sideline in between series going Okay, this Seattle team is showing us things that they hadn't shown. Devin Witherspoon blitz more times in this game than he did in any game all season. As New England was trying to figure out not to get too far into the weeds. You send a guy in motion, or a back in motion, or a receiver in motion to try and figure out is the defense plane zonner playing man. If a guy follows a guy, it's a lot of times it's man blah blah blah blah. Well Seattle would follow a guy, make it look like man, and then play zone. I mean they just did a great job. Mike McDonald did a great great job in disguising defenses bringing blitzers. 00:24:43 Speaker 11: I think Devin Witherspoon should have been the MVP. 00:24:46 Speaker 16: Again, I'm not pounding the table that Walker won it. He had an excellent game, so it's not like I'm losing my mind on it. But I think I would have gone with the defensive player, but New England just had to be sitting on the sidelines going a they're better than us right now, we need to figure something out, and they never figured anything out. 00:25:06 Speaker 2: Talking to my Golig, senior co host of Golick and Golick on FanDuel's Sports Network, give me the fan base that had to be thinking we should be there. 00:25:19 Speaker 16: Oh boy, probably the Rams, even though it was Seattle that beat him. I'm sure Buffalo fans thought this was our chance, right, this is our chance to get here with no Kansas City. 00:25:32 Speaker 2: But doesn't this come down to Zach Charbonnat with that two point conversion that gave them home field advantage, Like if if they lose that game to the Rams, Seattle is then on the road, I believe, for three consecutive games. So that re Membory just picks up the ball and yeah, yes, so, I mean that might be the biggest play of the entire season. 00:25:57 Speaker 16: It is amazing and kind of a kind of a fluky play because there is the Bill Parcells. That's why you run all them sprints and lift all them weights for certain plays to have an effect on the year, and that play did right. It makes you go from being on the road to being at home now. Not saying that Seattle couldn't have won on the road. They did very well on the road this year, extremely well on the road, so they. 00:26:22 Speaker 11: Could have done it as well. 00:26:24 Speaker 16: But I think everybody believes the next team up, and really that NFC Championship game was really kind of the Super Bowl and that had the best two teams in it. 00:26:33 Speaker 4: I would love to have watched the game with Josh Allen. Yeah, yeah, I. 00:26:39 Speaker 16: Mean, you know, their run defense just wasn't good enough this year. That is a glaring, glaring weakness when you're talking about in the playoffs when you can run the ball and play really good defense. Well, they couldn't stop the run very well. And that's gonna hurt you. That's going to get the ball controlled on you. But I think though you asked to out a fan base, I think that fan base was like, man, this was our chance and we blew it. 00:27:05 Speaker 2: Yeah, And it always goes back to and I feel like I'm on repeat when we get to the super Bowl. After the Super Bowl, you play great defense, run the football and don't turn the ball over. 00:27:15 Speaker 4: Right, I mean, that's that's it. I'll take my chances. 00:27:19 Speaker 2: Everybody talks about you know, we're gonna throw the ball and you got to have these big splash plays, and I go, if I can control the clock, keep your defense on the field, my defense is going to put pressure on you, and we don't have turnovers. 00:27:31 Speaker 11: And that's exactly what happened. 00:27:32 Speaker 16: They held the ball for over seven minutes more than New England defense played great, and Sam Darnold had fourteen interceptions and six loss fumbles. I believe in the regular season twenty turnovers and had a goose egg in the postseason zero turnovers. So that plays right into the perfect formula. 00:27:51 Speaker 4: I'll leave you with this. 00:27:52 Speaker 2: If we redrafted that quarterback class with Drake May, Caleb, Jayde and Daniels twenty twenty. 00:27:59 Speaker 16: Four, I I don't think it would be much different, because remember Jayden Daniels had an excellent rookie year and he had an injury filled second year. Caleb Williams, I mean, had a rough first year, but look what he's done his second year. Helped drop the sacks by getting rid of the ball, making hell of plays outside of the of the pocket. 00:28:21 Speaker 11: I don't really think it would have changed much. 00:28:26 Speaker 4: Bo Nicks would have gone ahead of Penix and McCarthy. 00:28:28 Speaker 16: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yes, without question, McCarthy and Penis would have been what it would have would have dropped out, would have dropped lower in the first round, if the first round at all, especially I had my son and I we definitely had question marks about JJ McCarthy coming in from Michigan, but Jes bo Nicks absolutely would have been the fourth quarterback. 00:28:48 Speaker 2: Taken good to talk to you as always got a good off season. If there is an off season for you, we know there isn't. Thank you, Mike, you got it. Mike Golig, senior co host of Golikan with Mike Junior on FanDuel Sports Network. Uh Dave in Ohio, Hey Dave, what's on your mind today? 00:29:08 Speaker 17: Hey? 00:29:08 Speaker 4: Dan? 00:29:08 Speaker 10: You got me? 00:29:09 Speaker 17: Yeah, you're stopping ground Mason, Ohio H five nine, A bit soft nine. The reason I was calling in I know you're all about love and we need your and the Danet's help. I've just come to find out that next year's Super Bowl falls on Valentine's Day. 00:29:34 Speaker 8: Yep. 00:29:36 Speaker 17: And the question I have married forty one years. If my Packers are in the Super Bowl, what. 00:29:43 Speaker 4: Should I do go to the Super Bowl? 00:29:47 Speaker 17: Okay, any impact on my relationship or any advice for your other listeners out there on what to do. 00:29:54 Speaker 2: Well, if she loves you you, then she'll love that you love your packers. I mean, this isn't we feel like Valentine's Day is only for the women. 00:30:03 Speaker 4: That it's for us too, right? If you say so, it is? It is? Yeah, it is? 00:30:13 Speaker 2: It should be should be yes, and is is. You can split that heart right down the middle. 00:30:18 Speaker 6: Our birthdays aren't even for us anymore. 00:30:20 Speaker 8: What are you talking about? 00:30:22 Speaker 5: Yes, it's also a contrived holiday that gives restaurants a chance to do their price fixed menus and all kinds of things are insanely a priced at the different place where you'd go out to eat, and chocolates and everything else. 00:30:33 Speaker 3: You gotta go see your team in the super Bowl. 00:30:34 Speaker 5: You can celebrate Valentine's Day the day before, the week after, whatever it is. 00:30:38 Speaker 2: If she loves you, then you know she'll you know. The lot of got to set them free is staying once saying what was what. 00:30:46 Speaker 9: Were the lyrics that if you love somebody, set them free? 00:30:49 Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, set them free? To go to LA for the Super Bowl. 00:30:54 Speaker 8: Yeah. 00:30:54 Speaker 4: Absolutely. 00:30:56 Speaker 2: Uh, Chad in Salt Lake, Like, Chad, what's on your mind? 00:31:01 Speaker 7: Well, first, my wedding anniversary is February thirteenth, and it starts by being smart and marrying smart. My wife is a diehard sports fan. She's already planning the trip to the super Bowl. 00:31:14 Speaker 8: I like that. 00:31:14 Speaker 7: I like that your coverage boys out take your coverage. 00:31:18 Speaker 4: Thank you, Chad. 00:31:19 Speaker 2: And if you come to Los Angeles, hopefully you'll stop by the show. 00:31:23 Speaker 4: Yes, Paul, I. 00:31:24 Speaker 9: Think it was Vince Lombardi that said years ago, love Come second, didn't you say that? 00:31:28 Speaker 4: I think again you had a lot of you know, great lines there. 00:31:32 Speaker 8: Welcome. 00:31:33 Speaker 2: Yeah, I love Yeah, it's a shared holiday. And if your wife knows that you love the Packer you go to the super Bowl, I mean bring her with you. 00:31:43 Speaker 13: Yes, Smart, And Valentine's Days every year, the Packers going to the super Bowl is not every year. 00:31:47 Speaker 4: That's true, That's true. 00:31:51 Speaker 8: Yeah. 00:31:51 Speaker 2: I think we need to take back Valentine's dage just a little bit here, I mean quietly, quietly, your first quietly, yeah, I mean know how it goes. Yeah, report back to this. What I did say to my wife, I said, what are you getting me? For Valentine's Day. And then she said I hadn't thought about it yet. I said, well, I hadn't thought about you either, even though I have, but I just wanted to let her know. I returned serve and I'm like, okay, yeah, how said feeling. 00:32:18 Speaker 4: Yes time. 00:32:18 Speaker 5: You also don't need all the Valentine's decorations. As soon as the ball goes down, it's already a month and a half. We're already doing all the hearts and all that garbage, not garbage, garbage. 00:32:28 Speaker 8: What do you like? 00:32:30 Speaker 5: A month and a half of Valentine's things all over the pharmacies and the supermarkets and everywhere you go. 00:32:34 Speaker 3: The doctor's office is. 00:32:35 Speaker 2: Like Todd, You'll use anything for love on any day, especially a holiday. You'll be the cheesiest guy out there. 00:32:46 Speaker 5: Get it where you can get if it has to be only on February fourteenth, it's so weird. 00:32:51 Speaker 2: You're very transparent with your endgame. Here, I am you will, Yeah, I'll get. 00:32:57 Speaker 3: The chocolates and the flowers and the jewelry. I'm like everybodybody else. 00:33:00 Speaker 5: You do that thing, and then you keep your fingers crossed and see how the nights. 00:33:04 Speaker 2: And just make sure that you don't put your son and daughter on your text mail. 00:33:10 Speaker 5: Yes, I did have that faux pas in during Super Bowl week. Something that was just meant for my wife was on text. Thankfully it wasn't that inappropriate, but it was something. 00:33:22 Speaker 4: No, it was it. It hinted. 00:33:25 Speaker 3: Thankfully, Mario showed me how quickly had it deleted. 00:33:27 Speaker 14: I don't. 00:33:28 Speaker 11: I wouldn't have. 00:33:28 Speaker 3: No ideatt Like once you said it, I thought it's out there forever. No, you can delete it, you can take it back or something. 00:33:32 Speaker 2: Oh, when Fritzy goes, oh, I can't believe what I did. And you know when he says that, I'm rarely surprised, but this one I was surprised because he sent a sexy message text to his wife that included his son and daughter. 00:33:47 Speaker 3: It was advised. 00:33:47 Speaker 5: It was the kind of thing that I would not want to have on that note for any reason at all. 00:33:53 Speaker 8: Yes, mart I don't know if it was sexy. He was just inappropriate. 00:33:56 Speaker 4: Well, you were there with him. 00:33:57 Speaker 14: I was. 00:33:58 Speaker 13: We were in the car and then he gets a call and it was his wife. 00:34:04 Speaker 4: Didn't go great, Yeah, I. 00:34:06 Speaker 5: Know you're showing off to your friends there in the car, but like that, why did. 00:34:10 Speaker 3: You send that? 00:34:12 Speaker 4: Why did you? 00:34:13 Speaker 3: I shouldn't have. I was in a playful mood. We had the guest book. 00:34:16 Speaker 5: We were at the San Jose Sharks, and I was just feeling myself and I wasn't really picking clearly, and I was just in a silly mood. 00:34:22 Speaker 2: How about we take a break. More phone calls coming up, update the poll results. Reggie Miller will join us next hour. The NBA's talking about expansion and no surprise, they're talking about Vegas and Seattle. Well, talk to Reggie about that. We're back after this Dan Patrick show. 00:34:39 Speaker 1: Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows at foxsports Radio dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to listen live. 00:34:50 Speaker 2: And I'm watching the pregame festivities with the Super Bowl, seeing who's down there hob nobbing there, Good buddy Adam Sandler. Was there a lot of celebrities And I look over and I go, there's a guy in San Francisco who looks just like Reggie Miller. 00:35:08 Speaker 4: What were you doing? 00:35:10 Speaker 18: We were there on the request, which was very honored of the merger because we were promoting All Star Weekend on our legendary February that we are currently in with. As you just mentioned, the Olympics for two weeks, the Super Bowl and All Star Game all on the Peacock and NBC. So we were there, Carmelo Anthony and Jamal Crawford and myself got a chance to do a pregame hit with Maria Taylor and Jason Garrett and the whole studio guys from the football. 00:35:49 Speaker 14: Side of things. 00:35:50 Speaker 18: And it was my first Super Bowl experience. I've never ever been to a super Bowl before. Didn't know what to expect. I have seen you many of times at the Super Bowl and working it, so I wanted. 00:36:03 Speaker 14: To know what it was all about. And I was I was a kid in a candy store. It was. It was a pretty awesome experience. 00:36:10 Speaker 4: Did you walk up to anybody outside the basketball world. 00:36:14 Speaker 18: We did, so we went on the field after our hit and had a chance to actually see the guys because our hit was at about eleven fifty eleven fifty five, so the buses had just gotten to Levi Stadium and the players were just kind of coming out, and where our green room was was in close proximity to the Seattle locker room, so Cooper Cup came out. 00:36:44 Speaker 14: And what's Jackson in Jigba? 00:36:49 Speaker 18: Yeah, you came on out and took pictures with us, and we watched the warm up. We didn't get a chance to see any of the Patriots because they were at the far end of the other side, but again just to see and to see them without pads like you know, they weren't. They were just out there for their pre pre pre warm up, so no pads, just shorts and it was kind of cool. 00:37:11 Speaker 2: All right, let me get to last night. This is how it sounded with the Pistons and the hornets. 00:37:19 Speaker 10: J d on the dribble, right back down on Diabate and a whistle. 00:37:23 Speaker 8: But they're going out. 00:37:26 Speaker 4: Dia Bat. 00:37:28 Speaker 10: This boy Diabat is he's facing suspension here, there is no question about it. 00:37:36 Speaker 4: And now Bridges throves a punch. 00:37:39 Speaker 14: Now just hands out. 00:37:41 Speaker 11: Oh man, that's a bounty brook, Yeah, there go. 00:37:45 Speaker 12: After review, fighting fouls have been assessed to the following players, Diabate and Bridges from Charlotte and durn and Store from Detroit. 00:37:53 Speaker 3: Those four players have been ejected from the game. 00:37:56 Speaker 4: Your thoughts seeing that, reg. 00:38:00 Speaker 18: I'm not condoning violence at all, but it's been a while since we've seen a good. 00:38:06 Speaker 4: Old No, we don't need to see that. We don't know, we don't need to see that. 00:38:12 Speaker 18: But it shows me that, you know, because everyone wants to talk about this generation and everyone's buddy buddy, and can't we all just get along? And there was a little animosity between a team that is arguably one of the hottest in the league right now in the Charlotte Hornets, right winners of ninth straight, I believe, and the number one team in the Eastern Conference in Detroit. And it's funny how something so little, I mean, because the fowl really wasn't anything, in my opinion, which leads me to believe there was a lot of talk that was leading up to that, or there were some elbows before something they don't show. 00:38:51 Speaker 14: But the foul was nothing. It's what happened afterwards. 00:38:57 Speaker 18: I expect multiple games from Star number one. 00:39:00 Speaker 14: He left the bitch and he threw hands. 00:39:04 Speaker 18: I think if you leave the bench automatically, that's three games, two or three games something like that. But on top of you know, throwing your hands, I think he's gonna get a couple more games. 00:39:14 Speaker 14: On top of that. 00:39:16 Speaker 18: Durham, you know, the mush to Diabate's face. Bridges threw some punches. I believe that connected as well, so we'll see multiple suspensions, high fines, and then we move on. 00:39:30 Speaker 2: I just worry about not the guy in front of me. I worry about the guide to the side of me or behind me, who's going to take a cheap shot. 00:39:40 Speaker 18: And it happens right, And that's why you got to have your head on a swivel, because when something like that breaks out and I'll just go back, you know, to the malice in the palace versus the pistons. What made that a little bit more unique and different is because of the fan aspect of it, when the fans started to come onto the court, when we entered it the stands as well, because you didn't know where players where fans were going to come from, and just having your head on a swovel, because you never know where a punch is coming, if a chair is being thrown at you, if you're going to potentially be maced, which Ron and I were almost maced by one of the officers on the floor. You just never knew what was going to happen. When you get into a situation. 00:40:23 Speaker 4: Like that, but you had a suit on, didn't you. You weren't. 00:40:27 Speaker 18: I had broken I had broken my finger in training camp, and this is one of the early games in our season, so I was in a suit. And once everything happened between Ben Wallace and Ron, if you remember, Ron went over to the scorers table and was laying down, and I'm kind of, like, you know, talking to him, trying to calm him down. And I think you and I have discussed this before. Out of the corner of my eye, I see it. I see it traveling and in three D slow motion, the cup and as soon as it hits Ron, he turned into the incredible Hulk. 00:41:04 Speaker 14: And just that's when he went into the stands and I had to go. I had to go after him, because lord knows, I didn't know what he was going to do. And I went in there. Stephen Jackson went over there. 00:41:17 Speaker 18: I believe David Harrison on our team was over there in the stands. Rashid Wallace for the Pistons were over It was just like they say, malice. 00:41:26 Speaker 14: In the palace. It definitely was a malice. 00:41:28 Speaker 4: And did you get fined. 00:41:32 Speaker 14: Fine and suspended? 00:41:33 Speaker 18: Because I left the court of play and went into the stands, even being a peacemaker, I believe I got two games that I think that because I was out that was part of like time served. But yeah, I was suspended because I left the court and went into the stands, even as a peacemaker. 00:41:58 Speaker 14: To get Ron back on the court. 00:41:59 Speaker 18: That was my main thing was to get Rang out of the stands and back on the court. Lobell hol did I know once we were back on the court, things because the fans being on the court now, things got a little bit more escalated, and especially with the police officer running up with about ready to make us on the court, and then my main objective was to get them to the locker room. 00:42:22 Speaker 2: But you know, when we look back on that, I don't think we look at what led up to that, Like didn't Ben Wallace play a role in this that we look at the crowd in Detroit versus the Pacers and really the role that the Pistons played in the malice at the Palace and how. 00:42:40 Speaker 18: Things have changed in terms of fans safety and player safety as well. If you go to games now and you see when the players run out of tunnels now they're running out like shielded now because now they have cover because of what happened to us as we were leaving the court with all the beer, popcorn, everything being thrown at us. And look, at the end of the day, we we as a team probably should never should have went into the stands as the pedestrians or you know, the people watching the game never should have came on to the court. It was just a mess all the way around. What I didn't like was them trying to frame it as we were a bunch of thugs, and I didn't appreciate that that. I don't you know that was coming from the league because if you listen to the game, and I believe Bill Walton was on that call, he was livid by the fan behavior. By the time we had left Detroit and landed back in Indiana, it was all about us, and I knew coming down it was all the player's fault. The player's fault, the player's fault, as opposed to it really being fifty to fifty. But I will say this, we should have known better. 00:43:56 Speaker 14: It cost us. 00:43:58 Speaker 18: I thought that was one of our best chances to win a championship because we had just signed Steven Jackson. He was gone for like twenty five to thirty games, Jermaine was gone for twenty five to thirty games, and ron our Test was lost for the rest of the season. And remember they were the defending champs, and what led up to that was the history in the playoffs the year. 00:44:20 Speaker 14: Before, being that close to moving on to the finals. And remember they beat the Lakers. 00:44:25 Speaker 18: We felt that that could have been us, and then we smacked them in our first matchup. The defending champs versus US and that rivalry, and we were trying to send a message Dan, and we all saw what. 00:44:38 Speaker 14: Happened after that. 00:44:39 Speaker 2: He's Reggie Miller, the Hall of Famer NBC Sports Lead Analyst. NBC has the All Star Game for the first time since two thousand and two. NBA All Star Saturday, five Eastern on NBC and Peacock. The All Star Game tips off Sunday five eastern on NBC Peacock and tell him, Undo, what do you expect with this new format with the All Star Game? 00:45:02 Speaker 18: Before the injuries to Jannie, to SGA and to a certain degree, and this is not a I'm sure not a popular I think a lot of people were leaning towards the World winning this. 00:45:17 Speaker 14: Yeah, with and you know I'll add Luca to that. 00:45:21 Speaker 18: Luca hasn't played the last few games for the Lakers with a lake injury, so we don't know what his availability is. Stephen Curry just recently yesterday is out of the All Star Game because of a knee injury. I like the format because I think we've been kind of trending this way. Just look at the last seven or eight MVPs. They all have been international players. The last American born MVP was James Harden, I believe in twenty nineteen. So I like the format. I'm still leaning towards Team World with Wimby, Shane Goon, Jamal Urry, Jokics. If Yokis plays like Yogics in recent All Star Games, he really hasn't played hard, but if he plays hard, and I like the two teams Stars and Strikes. 00:46:11 Speaker 14: We've got a younger. 00:46:12 Speaker 18: Team of the k cutting Hams of the world Tyrese Maxi, and we have an older team that was Lebron James, Kevin Durant, would have been Stephen Curry, Donovan Mitchell and those players, so it'll be interesting. I like the format, but I also like Team World. 00:46:30 Speaker 14: I know that's not very popular, but we'll see. It'll all be settled. 00:46:36 Speaker 2: On Sunday the off season here with Lebron, you know, there's where there's smoke, there's fire, and it just feels like this Cleveland reunion is not going away. 00:46:48 Speaker 4: Now. 00:46:48 Speaker 2: It might be because we're keeping it in the forefront here, but I'm just trying to add logic to this, and that is, if I'm Lebron and I'm looking at the Lakers, we're not winning anything. I would have a chance to at least get to the NBA Finals if I went to the Cavaliers. 00:47:05 Speaker 4: I'm not going anywhere with the Lakers right now. 00:47:09 Speaker 2: Does how important is it for him to go out at home in Los Angeles or to go back to home home and wrap this up? 00:47:21 Speaker 18: I think if he goes back back to Cleveland where he won that championship, is it going to be taking a hometown discount as well? Because now they just added James Harden and his salary. You've got Donovan Mitchell on a mac salary. Mobley is going to be up. Jared Allen, your best chance to win a championship, especially to go back home to Cleveland and be in the East East, is up for grabs out West, You've got four or five teams led by the champs in OKC that you know are going to be there. Right now, Detroit is leading the East up by five over New York in six, I believe for the Boston Celtics. But the East will be getting some strength back with possibly Tatum coming back this year, but we know he'll be back next year for Boston. 00:48:08 Speaker 14: Halliburton. 00:48:09 Speaker 18: Indiana will be better now that they've gotten Zubach in that big trade, So the Pacers will be better. 00:48:16 Speaker 14: But Cleveland to me. 00:48:17 Speaker 18: I mean, they have the second best record in the league a year ago, and maybe they need that leadership. Maybe it is James Harden, maybe it is Lebron. But the only way this is going to go away if Lebron. James makes it go away. So I think it's staying out there because the hype machine of Lebron is keeping it out there as well. 00:48:39 Speaker 4: Oh you think you think, I don't think. 00:48:42 Speaker 18: No, I don't think him personally, but his camps, well, you know, maybe rich fall May. I mean, there's a lot that comes with being Lebron and maybe that is keeping this. Oh he's going back he possibly possibly could be going back to Cleveland. That hype machine is keeping it out there now Lebron himself, but the height machine behind Lebron could be keeping it out there. 00:49:06 Speaker 14: Yeah. 00:49:06 Speaker 2: See, that's a tough one that you're the third option with Austin Reeves now and Luca You know what. 00:49:12 Speaker 14: Option would you think he would be if he went back to. 00:49:14 Speaker 4: Cleveland, Well, he would be the. 00:49:17 Speaker 14: Third option there too. 00:49:19 Speaker 4: Would he be the third option behind Mitchell. 00:49:22 Speaker 14: And Hardenel and behind James Harden, Yes, he. 00:49:25 Speaker 4: Would loll Harden you know what. 00:49:28 Speaker 18: He might He might be the fourth behind have him Mobley. He would be the fourth option if he went back to Cleveland. But to have that experience in the lineup. And the problem is if you do that, Jalen Tyson, an up and coming player who's in there starting line now, to me, it will probably stunt his growth because he'll move to the bench to make way for Lebron. But again, we're getting ahead of ourselves. Right now, he's on the Lakers. Let's focus on what he could do for the Lakers and what they they can do to you know, maybe upset some teams in the Western Conference. 00:50:04 Speaker 14: But we're getting ahead of ourselles. 00:50:06 Speaker 2: Theodore Nba talking about expansion with Vegas is a foregune conclusion, I think so. 00:50:12 Speaker 14: I think Seattle is a foregone conclusion. Never should allow left Seattle in the first place. 00:50:18 Speaker 18: It is a great fan base, as we just witnessed on Super Bowl Sunday, how they travel and how they've been for their football team. 00:50:26 Speaker 14: Having a chance to play. 00:50:27 Speaker 18: GPH and those great Nate McMillan, Dale Ellis and some of those great Seattle teams, it was unbearable to come into that building and play against those guys, and that fan base is just absolutely they would be on fire to be back in the league. So I think those two teams are it's a foregone conclusion. The owners will vote on that and we'll have two new teams. 00:50:56 Speaker 2: More dangerous city for NBA players Vegas or Miami. 00:51:02 Speaker 14: Depends on what you. 00:51:03 Speaker 18: Like, because I think woh, I mean both have their sinful their sinful advantages. 00:51:15 Speaker 4: Did you ever have the Miami flu? 00:51:17 Speaker 14: I never had the Miami flu? Never ever. 00:51:20 Speaker 2: Okay, you were lucky you were in one of the least dangerous in Indianapolis. 00:51:30 Speaker 14: Yes, that helped. 00:51:32 Speaker 4: That help. But Vegas, oh my goodness. 00:51:36 Speaker 18: Yeah, But you know what, there there's been a body of work of other teams that have been there and that have been a successful. The ace is not the Raider has been successful, but teams that have been there, they've. 00:51:46 Speaker 2: Got a I'm talking about those who visit, not those who live there. It's like the people who live there don't live on the strip. 00:51:54 Speaker 14: So you're more worried about the visiting thing than the whole thing. 00:51:58 Speaker 2: Oh yes, yes, the home team, they'll be out outside the city. 00:52:04 Speaker 18: Look, I think so many people have gone to Las Vegas during the off season during summer League. I think it to me, so now I'll answer your question after thinking about it. 00:52:15 Speaker 14: To me, Miami is much more dangerous. 00:52:18 Speaker 2: Okay, did you ever get in trouble in Utah? 00:52:23 Speaker 14: Never? 00:52:23 Speaker 18: In fact, I think I'm an adopted Mormon. 00:52:26 Speaker 14: I that's all good in Utah. 00:52:32 Speaker 2: Have fun at the All Star Game.
