Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio.

00:00:04
Speaker 2: There's a lot of things that happened over the weekend. By the way, Pittsburgh, take a bow. You did a wonderful job. I think there's over three hundred thousand people who live in Proper Pittsburgh, Proper or in the surrounding area. They had over seven hundred thousand for the draft all three days. Now, the weather certainly helped out, but that's a football crazy town. The weather was great, the atmosphere was wonderful, and Washington, d C. You're now on the clock for next year's draft. We focus on quarterbacks and it's the most important position in all the sports. And then you start to think about it's one thing to be a starter in the NFL, but it's another thing to be a backup quarterback. And we've talked about this before. There are certain backup quarterbacks that you say not worth it. You know, I go back to Colin Kaepernick, if he was going to be backup quarterback, wasn't worth it. Tim Tebow not worth it as a backup quarterback. Too much coverage for my backup quarterback. Even Cam Newton if he was going to come back and he was going to be a backup quarterback. Johnny Manziel. You got to have a backup quarterback who you probably don't see very much. And that's a good thing. If you're one of the McCown brothers and you're just there for fifteen years, Chase Daniel, you know, nice college career. You just want to make sure that guy is just there. In case, Colet McCoy, Diego Pavilla was a Heisman Trophy finalist. He did not get drafted. Now there's a few reasons why he was very, very good in the SEC. That should stand out and that should make that should make you draft eligible. You should get drafted just based off what you did. You did it for Vandy in the SEC. You know, you can have personality at other positions. It can be absorbed, it can be embraced, but not a backup quarterback because quarterback is evaluated differently. You can be an elite talent and get away with that wide receiver. You can be an elite talent and get away with that or a great defensive alignment edge rusher. The message from the NFL is really clear. If you're not a can't miss prospect, professionalism is not just valued, it's required, and that hurt Diego Pavia. Also that he's not a tall guy. Most of your backup quarterbacks, if you check, are not short quarterbacks. Diego Pavia might be five to ten. But you start to look at what you did in your pre draft meetings with team. Surete Sanders fell to the fifth round. It wasn't anything that he was doing on the football field, it was just personality. Fifth round. Pavilla goes undrafted. He didn't have an agent, but you have t Newton Kaepernick. Other examples of your backup quarterback being too much of a headline or potential for a headline. Pavia is being invited a tryout with the Ravens. He wasn't signed as an undrafted free agent. He gets to try out now. He's also friends with Johnny Manziel. That doesn't help, and you start to be little Indiana football Fernando Mendoza, Heisman Knight. Football moves on quickly, Yeah, you can be just ask Johnny Manziel. It moves quickly. It's like, oh, yeah, what are you doing now?

00:03:43
Speaker 3: Nothing?

00:03:44
Speaker 2: Okay, check back in five years from now, probably not doing nothing again. But Diego Pavilla has a personality, but he does not have a personality that I want as my backup quarterback. I don't think he's good enough to be a starter in the NFL. You know, he's not Doug Flutey. Like Doug Flutey was five nine Heisman Trophy Trophy winner, but he was the ideal personality to be a backup quarterback and ready to come in when need be. In fact, Flutey was ahead of his time. Flutey. Now Fluty would be able to play and play at a pretty high level. But diego Pavilla. The personality, that's who you are. You're selling that personality, but I'm not buying that. Teams are not buying that. Teams didn't buy Shud or Sanders. He came in, he didn't interview well. He seemed entitled, and teams were like, you're not a can't miss prospect. If you are, we can we can absorb that, we can try to smooth that over, or we can sell that as Hey, come out and see this guy. He's a lot of fun. Like Manzell in college was wonderful, and then I realized just how great Mike Evans was, and that's where you go. He certainly helped out Johnny Manziel be Johnny Manziel, But that personality, then your commitment is questioned. You want to party, you want to be a star. I have no interest in that. It's a tough enough position to play. It's tough enough as a coach to try to survive, to try to win. You're going to bring him in to Baltimore. You do have Lamar Jackson, and you have a new head coach and Todd Munkin. I don't want that. You know, maybe if it's Andy Reid with Patrick Mahomes, maybe, but you've got to be really good. Are you going to be able to break down defenses? Are you going to put in the extra time to make the starter look better? Well, these guys have been catered to, pampered all their life because they've been the star. Now you're going to be a backup. I don't get to play. That's the life of a backup quarterback. You don't want to see me, you don't want to hear it from me. You just want me to help the starting quarterback. And that was the brutal reality that Diego Pavia was handed over the weekend. He did not get drafted yeah, Pone, He's one.

00:06:18
Speaker 4: Of those guys who probably should have stayed in college another year if he could have scammed some eligibility. He had two years in New Mexico State, two years of Vandy. If he could have somehow bought another year, No, pun, you could have got paid on al money, he'd be attractive.

00:06:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, but still, if this is who he is, I mean, you gotta be really, really good if I'm going to take this on. And Kaepernick was a great starter, but I don't want what comes with that. Cam Newton great, I don't want him as a backup Tim Tebow. You want your daughter to marry him. I don't want him as my backup quarterback because now I get all that attention and I don't want that kind of a yes dealing.

00:07:02
Speaker 5: It is surprising, though, that a team didn't take a flyer on him in the later rounds when you see some of the other quarterbacks who got taken lately. Nuss Meyer obviously went at the very end. He's got health concerns and if you look at the tape last year, I mean hard to argue with that season.

00:07:18
Speaker 6: No.

00:07:18
Speaker 2: I know he's really talented, but you've got to be great how much baggage do you have that you know, whenever I see somebody falling and all you want to do. It's like wide receivers like Antonio Brown was unbelievable for five years, then all of a sudden, Antonio Brown's baggage didn't fit in the overhead bin. Now we have an issue here. A lot of these wide receivers, they'd be like, Okay, he's a personality, your quarterback, that's the face of your franchise. But maybe gets an opportunity somewhere. Kind of feels like he's going to be Arena League or UFL or whatever it's called now. Maybe gets an opportunity there, maybe CFL.

00:08:08
Speaker 4: Yeah, Paul, Yeah, the UFL is going on currently. If they could snag him, they get some people tuning in me.

00:08:15
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I guess. Actually I tuned in this weekend accidentally. I think Columbus was playing your Columbus av Yeah, I'm going what am I doing? I mean, I'm not Jonesan for football. After the weekend with the draft, like I'm okay, I'm okay. And you know what was interesting If you have kids Christmas morning and they just start opening up gifts and you're like wait, wait, wait, hold on, hold on, hold on, let let just have some order here. That was round one of the NFL Draft. It was your kids are just opening up gifts. You're like, wait, wait, hold on, and the pick is in, and here's the commissioner and the brown select and then all of a sudden, it's like and the pick is in.

00:09:00
Speaker 3: It was quick.

00:09:01
Speaker 2: Might have been a little too quick for me, And that sounds hypocritical because I probably was like, man, it takes forever in the first round. Roger Goodell's first year as commissioner, first round was six hours. I think we were just under three hours this first round. It moved quick. I like it everything nowadays with sports, it's gotta move, gotta move, gotta move. You're competing with somebody's phone. It just felt like it was a little too fast that everybody was opening up their Christmas gifts and you weren't able to follow what was going on, like all right, okay, wait, hold on, hold on at your sister's turn. But the hugs were really powerful and passionate. Do you think Roger Goodell's wife says, why don't you hug me like that?

00:09:52
Speaker 3: She get hurt.

00:09:54
Speaker 4: He goes in for the big guy.

00:09:55
Speaker 2: Oh, I know, yes, Barbon.

00:09:57
Speaker 7: But was it Roger Goodell's wife's dream to hug him? These kids that get drafted, their dream is to get their name called in the hug Roger Goodell, I'm not sure if that's his wife's dream. Okay, So their dreams being realized by hugging this man.

00:10:10
Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, I'm just saying, you know, yes, bo.

00:10:15
Speaker 4: Did you guys find the first round on TV almost too fast where you didn't get enough breakdown of the last draft pick?

00:10:22
Speaker 8: Yeah?

00:10:23
Speaker 2: A touch, Yeah, it was just a little bit. But I'd rather be faster than slower. And I know Mike Greenberg, who hosted for the Mothership, said, you know, maybe we should let the host call a time out. And there's other draft picks that you want to talk a little bit more about. Well, the problem with that is ESPN's not the only game in town. There's other networks, other shows that are carrying the draft. So if Greeney goes, hey, I'd like to call a time out.

00:10:52
Speaker 3: I want to.

00:10:53
Speaker 2: Explore a little bit more about why this happened. Well, then all the other shows got to go uh w w green call a timeout. Can't do that.

00:11:02
Speaker 9: Yes, Ton, that seems more like that the A team website should offer, Like, if you want more extended information about picks in the later rounds, go to our website and there's an analyst there live chatting about it. Nothing more than that.

00:11:14
Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that there should be something adjacent to the draft picks if you want to explore a little bit more with your team, and maybe you have somebody who will be there to give you maybe a little bit more of a synopsis on your player. Still feels like Sean McVay is answering questions about ty Simpson and he's tired of answering questions about ty Simpson. But Sean, you can't convince me that you were grumpy about something else that was going on in your life. If it is, tell me what it was. Because you want to win now. You can't be excited because Ty Simpson's coming in and you of course have Matthew Stafford. I can't be excited we got the quarterback because I got a quarterback who's a Hall of Famer and you might have been the best team in football last year. And if you're gonna convince me ty Simpson that's a good pick. He might be the right guy, but at the wrong time. He's not gonna help you this year, and if he does, that means Matthew Stafford's hurt. But if you are going to tell me that Kenyon Sadik or Mackay Lemon couldn't have helped you more, if you're Sean McVay, maybe there's a defender there. But if I can add a tight end who runs a four three forty, or I got Lemon who's a usc kid who is a tough runner after the catch, that to me felt like that would have made Sean McVay a little happier.

00:12:44
Speaker 3: But he kept.

00:12:45
Speaker 2: Saying no, no, no, no, no, you know we're lockstep me and Les Sneid the g I'm gonna go, okay, I'm not buying it because I would have been like, you gotta be kidding me, and we're going to take We're gonna use the thirteenth pick. Can't we trade down? Can't we get if we trade down? It sounds better like if we got him at the twenty sixth pick, and then you go okay, which is what I thought they were gonna do. I thought that they would go at the very end of the first round and they would try to get Ty Simpson, but I would not be happy. If I'm Sean McVay. Now, I would have been probably better at showing that I'm a team guy. But the fact that he was noticeably upset angry, I liked it because it was an honest moment there. Yeah, so that that seemed to just hang over the draft and it still is going to and even in the offseason. And then I hear the Rams aren't out on Jimmy Garoppolo yet, like I think they're trying to get Jimmy garoppolow du still want to be with the team as a backup. So it was fun. But once again, Pittsburgh, you did a wonderful job. The audiences that came out all three days spirited into it, and I would think per capita, I don't think anybody. Maybe Green Bay buys more gear than those fans in Pittsburgh. Wow.

Speaker 2: Let's bring in Chris Sims, Pro Football Talk Live co host. You can also listen to his podcast Unbuttoned. Former NFL and Texas quarterback Why wasn't Diego Pavia drafted?

00:15:47
Speaker 6: Well, there's a lot of reasons to that one. You know, smaller quarterback. I think the league is a little down on smaller quarterbacks right now. Two when he got to play in the pocket, it's underwhelming to watch him in those scenarios. He's not a high level thrower of the football. You know, he plays a style and is most successful when it's backyard type football. But yet he's not very fast either, and then he plays small. And then also on top of that, Dan, nobody wants to bring in their practice squad third string quarterback who likes.

00:16:25
Speaker 3: To make headlines for the wrong reasons at times.

00:16:28
Speaker 6: And I think all those situations are why you know he wasn't drafted, yes or this weekend.

00:16:34
Speaker 2: I know I spent a lot of time Thursday and Friday on this story. And that's ty Simpson going to the Rams. Yeah, And I'm trying to understand the strategy of taking a guy for a team that might be the best team in football. With apologies to Seattle, but you're taking a guy who best case scenario doesn't help you this year and maybe not next year. So why tak him that high? Given that I had a couple of offensive weapons. Sadiq was there, Lemon there, DeVante Adams is thirty four exactly, So help me understand the philosophy there.

00:17:12
Speaker 6: Well, I don't think I'm gonna because I can't understand it either. I mean, I certainly wouldn't have done it.

00:17:17
Speaker 3: That was not what I was for.

00:17:18
Speaker 6: I mean again, I listen, you can still hear you hear it. Those are the Seahawks and then forty nine ers. They're still cheering that they did. The Rams took Ty Simpson. I mean yes, I mean because you said it. They're the second best team in football last year. If I all do accounts, if they go to the Super Bowl, they're gonna beat the Patriots.

00:17:35
Speaker 3: So they were a better football team, you know.

00:17:38
Speaker 6: So yeah, you looked at that pick thirteen, and I know the whole league, in the NFC West especially, it was like, oh my gosh, the Rams got picked thirteen. I think there were some thoughts there that they were like, oh gosh, I'm scared they're going to trade into the top ten and really get some splash type player to add to their awesome football team on top of that.

00:17:57
Speaker 3: So yeah, I listen.

00:17:58
Speaker 6: I know it was a an extra pick they had from the Atlanta Falcons trade, and they probably feel like they're playing with house money. But man, you're in a super Bowl window right now. It's Matthew Stafford's playing phenomenal football. Like you said, Ty Simpson's a guy again smaller. I don't think he was anybody viewed him as a top twenty pick in the NFL draft, and the league's a little down on those type of guys like I'm telling you about. And he hasn't played a lot of football to where now he's gonna sit on the bench and not play football for a little bit while longer. That's to me the part that doesn't quite make sense. And I'll throw this out there too, Dan, I mean, for a guy like Matthew Stafford, this is only going to motivate him to play it one more year extra. Oh you think you're gonna tell me when I'm gonna retire? And oh damn, you didn't want to waste a pick, like you said, mackay Lemon. I mean, Devontae Adams is not what he used to be and he's thirty four and he gets injured. So yeah, that was not my favorite pick, and it's certainly it's still a head scratcher to me, and by all DODU account Sean mcvay's reaction on Thursday night as.

00:19:02
Speaker 2: Well, I'm trying to understand the Cardinals philosophy with Jeremiah Love that.

00:19:06
Speaker 3: I get it.

00:19:07
Speaker 2: You gotta have a face for the franchise. McBride is great. We're still waiting for Harrison to be something. You don't have a quarterback. He's too talented to pass up. I just don't know if that's the right team for him at the right time. And then you go out and you get Carson Beck later, who is probably going to see the field aside from Mendoza, Carson Beck is probably the next quarterback who's going to be playing this season.

00:19:38
Speaker 6: It wouldn't shock me. Jacoby Pressett, I expect them to be there be the quarterback. I think Arizona went like the route of like, we're not gonna make this all about the quarterback. Just because we need one doesn't mean we're just gonna pick one and one that we don't necessarily like high in the draft, like a ty Simpson. I never got the sense they would do that again. They were a team that was kind of burned by the smaller type quarterback. I worked in New England with Monty asin for it. I mean, the philosophical thought at the quarterback position in New England, and I believe Monty believes in that is that bigger quarterbacks, So that's traditionally what they had. I think that's what he believes in. Now where it's good Dan is this. This is Michael Lafleur. He's a run game expert, and he knows how to use the running back, being from Shanahan, being from McVeigh, his brother up in Green Bay. Trading for Josh Jacobs adding him to the offense, They're gonna know how to use him, not only in the run game and the pass game. And then they got a decent o line. They got something forming here. So I think what they're kind of doing is just building the team and then hopefully next year they can strike while the iron's hot and finally get their quarterback of the future.

00:20:47
Speaker 3: But for now, that wasn't there, and they went.

00:20:49
Speaker 6: With the best offensive player on the board and the guy that has a chance to be Marshall Fauk if they can support him the right way with the team around him.

00:20:56
Speaker 2: Chris Sim's Pro Football Talk Live co host, in his podcast entitled Unbuttoned, it's rare when we say this, but the Jets seemed to have a good draft, But who had a better draft. The Giants to the Jets.

00:21:11
Speaker 6: Oh, I mean they both to me are at the top. Okay, they're at the top. Blank if you gave me stars. And I'm gonna do this on my podcast a little bit later. I'm gonna tell you the New York Giants and the New York Jets were two of the best drafts there is. Now, let me just say this right off the bat, because the Jets was phenomenal. Three first round picks. I like them all, I really and they're gonna help their football team. And it stays consistent with what the Jets have done all offseason, which was signing veteran players that can make them good right now. Because if they're not good right now, their butts are hot on the hot seat there. They got to make it work. And I think the guys they draft that can help them out right away now. The Giants, of course, I love that draft. And this is where people are missing out on this R Bell Reese conversation. Okay, so R Bell Reese, yes, he has a chance to be Michael Parsons. But as we know, Michael Parson since played a lot of middle linebackers. First year with the Dallas Cowboys, I know everybody's looking at it right now, going wait, they have pass rushers.

00:22:07
Speaker 3: I get it. Okay, Well, here's the first thing.

00:22:10
Speaker 6: The best everybody talks about sunny styles, and I tried to emphasize this on my Christims on Button podcast, the best middle linebacker in the draft is rvel Rees all right. So as freaky as everybody told you about sunny styles, he was the second best linebacker on his football team. Rvel Reese is the best middle linebacker to come out in football in quite some time. So you have that right off the bat, and that's where I think some giant fans are missing. So he's there, he's starting, He's gonna be phenomenal there, and then they can slowly work him in. Cave On Thibodeau has one year left playing there, so he'll be the third rotational guy. It'll be Abdul Carter, it'll be Brian Burns, rvel Reese in the middle, Cavon Thibodeau subbing in for the guys on the edge. Next year, rvel Reese will play a little bit more edge and they'll continue to infuse that to where two or three years from now, it'll be rvel recent abdual Carter on the edge, and we'll see where Brian Burns is.

00:23:04
Speaker 3: As you know, two or three years for a guy like that, it's a long time.

00:23:07
Speaker 6: So I love the Giants draft, but I love the Jets too, and I'd probably give the Giants the edge, honestly.

00:23:13
Speaker 2: Dan, Yeah, I think the Jets did a great job in drafting for next year that they didn't reach for anybody exactly. They're like, right, we'll figure out the quarterbacking situation. Let's just make the team better. And I go back to Bill Cowers quote when he was with me last week in Pittsburgh. He said, when we were getting ready to draft Ben Roethlisberger, we had already made ourselves a really good team. So the quarterback came into a good team instead of let's build around the quarterback and have him try to make like Fernando Mendoza. Yeah, I mean, hopefully they're building the team it's a good enough team that he comes in instead of saying, hey, you're the number one pick, go out there and be a savior.

00:23:57
Speaker 3: Yeah, And that's the way it should be.

00:23:59
Speaker 6: And see, that's the way I was tring to kind of explain to Arizona and you said it a better way there. I don't think they weren't gonna The Jets weren't gonna be oh, we're gonna reach and take a quarterback we don't like just because everybody says we need a quarterback. No, they're going, wait, we got Gino. He Gino's damn good if you can help them out a little bit. Same with the Cardinals, and Jacoby said, let's build the team and then if arch Manning's there next year, boom, he's ours. And he could come in and be really good right away because we got the supporter around him. And you know, we've had too many times in history where you just said it like we get the quarterback and you go, okay, but the rest of the team stinks. What it doesn't matter if it's Superman or whoever, John Elway, they're not gonna be very good with this team. And I think we've seen this Detroit. Detroit took the let's build the team and we'll grow. Jared Goff behind that. The Seattle Seahawks, what did they do They It wasn't like, oh, Sam, save us Sammy. It was like, our team's good, let's bring in Sam. He'll help us out all right. The Philadelphia Eagles, they never made it like, oh, it's Jalen Hurts and then we're gonna figure out. They were like, damn, our team's good and now we got Jalen Hurts and he'll fit into it. So I think that's the right approach. And I think too many organizations do quarterback before the team, and you're seeing one here where it's team first, like you're pointing out and.

00:25:12
Speaker 2: I keep mentioning this probably ad nauseum. That is, these are the kind of drafts that you look back in two or three years and you say, how did that team get so good? It's because you're drafting players that aren't making headlines. They're not you know, sexy names exactly. You know, you're just like, all of a sudden, you know it's a Pukin, a Kua in the fifth round, and you're like, man, was he a first round pick? Like these are the things that I try to tell people you can win later with drafts like this, totally, totally, you know, That's what I think the value of this is. Like, like the Chiefs quietly went out and I think had a good draft. They got defensive players, like they revamped their defense in one draft. Now you can say, did they go up maybe too high to get the defensive back? Yeah?

00:26:07
Speaker 3: Right, yeah.

00:26:08
Speaker 2: But you know, if I'm Steve Spagnola, I'm like, man, thank you Christmas, Christmas in April here that we got. So those are the little things that happened with some of these teams where you go quietly, they tapped you on the shoulder and they go keep an eye on us this year, next year.

00:26:24
Speaker 3: That's right. You build you know, I mean, you build teams.

00:26:28
Speaker 6: Really again, the success rate of the second and third round picks is greater than the success state of the first round picks. And with your chiefs thing, that was a calculated chance. And Dad, I'll sit here and tell you they I don't you got somebody's got to prove me wrong. I don't think they were trading up for Monsieur de Laine. They didn't think the Giants were gonna take rvel Reech. So they were going, oh my gosh, we're gonna get rvel Resa number six. The Giants aren't going to do that. They have enough pass rushers, right, But yet they knew if the Giants took it, and wait, there's another guy we really love there that we need.

00:26:59
Speaker 3: So that's smart team building.

00:27:01
Speaker 6: And they made a move at a calculated chance and risk there, right, So but yeah, the success rate of the second and third round picks is greater than the first round picks. We've seen the rams with f them picks, but yet still build their team with great third and fourth and fifth round picks. To your point there and the other thing we're seeing and you kind of hit on this just a little. The first round has become less about oh, this guy is awesome at this one thing, but he've got some other questions.

00:27:29
Speaker 3: We're not sure.

00:27:30
Speaker 6: We're seeing guys like I will say, like guys like Makai Lemon and Omar Cooper I think ten years ago. They're not first round picks. They're not they're not really explosive or sexy that way, but they're good there. They make you feel warm and cozy because they came from a good school with a good emblem, and they played in some big games and you just go, wait, the floor's high. The ceiling might not that be high, but there's not a bust factor. And gms have realized like if I draft bust, I get fired. If I draft guy that nobody can call her Bush I might be able to stick around a little longer. And I think the NFL's taking that approach in the first round.

00:28:06
Speaker 2: More here, Now, what's next on the football schedule here?

00:28:10
Speaker 6: Well, for me personally, I mean, I'm just happy I don't have to watch film and make lists and do you know, rank this position and watch the twenty seventh ranked defensive tackle in the draft. But now I just get to sit back and enjoy the news and kind of just react. So it's just OTA's and mini camps from here now.

00:28:29
Speaker 2: Dan and Aaron Rodgers.

00:28:32
Speaker 3: What's that?

00:28:33
Speaker 2: And Aaron Rodgers?

00:28:34
Speaker 6: Well, and Aaron Rodgers that that's the story that never dies. It just what it's been going on for eight years now to never dies. I've hit my life limit with talking with Aaron Rodgers.

00:28:46
Speaker 3: All right, thank you, Chris. All right, man, good seeing you.

00:28:49
Speaker 8: Dan.

00:28:49
Speaker 2: Tell those jerks I said, hi, all right, hey, jerks, Chris says, hie Chris Sims.

00:28:53
Speaker 1: Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows at Fox Sports Video dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to listen live poll question for the final hour of the program, Dylan.

00:29:08
Speaker 5: Is what Well, Dan, we can recap last hour, which was the NFL Draft this year was too short, too long, or just the right length? Fifty eight percent of people think it was just the right length.

00:29:19
Speaker 2: Okay.

00:29:20
Speaker 5: And for the final hour, we got a couple options. How much stock do you put in a team's draft grade right after the draft?

00:29:27
Speaker 10: You know, there's what's the difference between an A minus and a B plus? Really, Dan?

00:29:31
Speaker 2: Yeah?

00:29:32
Speaker 8: Or a C or a D.

00:29:33
Speaker 2: Yeah. I didn't get A minuses B pluses. I was kind of hanging in the BC D Canador and look how you turned out. Yeah, but you know, my kids always say that when I say, when they were in college, I said, come on, you know, bring home some good grades. Well you didn't, I said, I know, I know, but I'm I'm not the normal here. Don't follow me. Well you're successful, I know what. Talk to your mom, you know, just get good grades. Yeah, like she did. Yeah, you know when they sass back a little bit there, but they do have, you know, some ground to stand on. And I said, I never should have shared that with you. Yes, yes, uh, Martin.

00:30:21
Speaker 7: You live by to motto do as I say, not as I do. Yeah, you want your kids to be better, especially academically. That's my one regret.

00:30:28
Speaker 2: I won a good student. I wish that I I don't have the attention span. I was trying to think. My wife brought this up. When's the last time, not in a movie theater, that I actually saw a movie all the way through in one sitting? And I said, I can't. I can't recall. I don't know when that was because I will chop it up and usually a two hour movie is going to take me four days.

00:30:54
Speaker 3: It does? It does?

00:30:56
Speaker 2: Yes, Yes, Dylan, did.

00:30:57
Speaker 10: You watch The Irishman by a chance? Because I would have taken like a year and a half.

00:31:01
Speaker 2: I haven't finished it yet. Yeah, but I just don't have the attention span. And it's either you get me early or you lose me. And that was the way it was in school. Not good. How about we go around the room see if we got some good, best and worst of the weekend, Todd, you went to see the Michael Jackson bio pick I did.

00:31:23
Speaker 9: That was my best of the weekend. I thought the casting was great and I don't know if there's a golden globe for the gentleman that played Michael it was part of the Michael Jackson family, but I thought he was very believable as Michael. So if you're on the fence, I would say go check it out. Worst we mentioned it earlier in the show. Timber Wolves go up three one of the Nuggets Saday night, but the Vincenzo season's over during his achilles early in the game, very early in the game, and ant Man out for weeks. Hyperk that had left me and a bone bruise.

00:31:45
Speaker 2: Saturday night, the Rockets had thirty points off twenty four Laker turnovers. They avoided the sweep. There no Kevin Durant. Wemby went for twenty seven to twelve, seven blocks, four steals as this Spurs beat the Blazers take a three to one.

00:32:02
Speaker 12: Seriously, Dylan, Yeah, Dan, My best Michigan State offensive lineman, Matt Golden taken two oh ninth overall by the Commanders, who happens to hail from my hometown of Wilton, Connecticut, which is not exactly a football.

00:32:19
Speaker 10: Hotbed, so that's pretty cool to see.

00:32:21
Speaker 5: My worst of the weekend was my flight from Pittsburgh to Baltimore, one of the bumpier ones I've had recently. And an aborted landing about to touch down, go back up and circle around, and there's actually a group of deaf people in front of me who are like, you know, communicating with sign language. Side my headphones on, so I can't hear anything, but I see the tone of the sign language get more and more aggressive as we're going back up, and I was like, this can't be good.

00:32:49
Speaker 2: Even if you didn't have your headphones on, you wouldn't have heard. Though, Yeah, you're right, I.

00:32:53
Speaker 10: Didn't think about that.

00:32:55
Speaker 2: I'm just saying touche sir. Yeah, yes, Pauli Dylan.

00:33:00
Speaker 4: When you say a boarded landing, how physically close are you to the ground when you go back up like this?

00:33:05
Speaker 10: I think it varies. This one. It's happening before this one was like we.

00:33:09
Speaker 5: Were about to touch down on the runway like it's you know, matter of you know whatever, one hundred feet or something, and then right back up.

00:33:19
Speaker 2: I last year, during wintertime, I had a flight slide off the runway on landing.

00:33:25
Speaker 10: That's terrifying.

00:33:26
Speaker 2: Yes, it was because you keep going, Uh we're not stopping, but you know, the brakes are on and you landed and you just keep going and then all of a sudden that it's just like this jolt and then you stop, but nobody says anything, and I keep thinking, that's not a normal landing. That was a long, long landing. Yeah, Pauline, So the pilot just jumps on says what Orlando? I mean, just well, no, it wouldn't have affected Orlando in the winter. Maybe coming back from Orlando to New York.

00:34:00
Speaker 4: To ever be applaud at the end when he nailed little stuck the landing or no, I.

00:34:04
Speaker 2: Don't remember that. I think I was probably trying to get my breath back. Yes, Ton, what is the.

00:34:10
Speaker 9: Worst reason you ever heard while you were waiting for a flight that was delayed as to what the explanation was to why this is the door?

00:34:16
Speaker 2: How about we start with you because you probably have a story.

00:34:18
Speaker 9: I have a story.

00:34:19
Speaker 2: Okay, thank you.

00:34:20
Speaker 9: I was trying to connect from DC to Pittsburgh, another one of those weird ways of getting to our destination, and they said there was a squishy wheel, and I would have rather them say something far worse, like we can't find the engine or the wing fell off and we're trying to glue it.

00:34:32
Speaker 10: Background.

00:34:32
Speaker 9: A squishy wheel was the reason why I was delayed an hour and a half, couldn't make my connection. Then I got to stay for four and a half hours in the DC airport for a ten to twelve pm departure to Pittsburgh, getting in like eleven thirty.

00:34:43
Speaker 2: Yes, sometimes it's like too much information. When you're at the dinner table and you always have this relative who wants to tell you about surgery, and you don't need to tell me everything about it. Like a squishy wheel, you don't need to tell me that. You can just say we got something mechanical that we have to tend to and then I'm okay with that. But you don't want to say, you know what, we found a wrench and it was tucked inside one of the engines. Here, man, we're in trouble. I don't want to hear anything. We can't get the cargo door closed. Bang bang bang.

00:35:17
Speaker 4: Yeah, Paul, my honeymoon New York to Hawaii.

00:35:20
Speaker 2: We're flying.

00:35:21
Speaker 4: We're a couple hours away from Hawaii. You know, it's maybe eleven hour flight. And the pilot, ladies and gentlemen, he says there's an issue with one of the four engines. But he said, he goes if we were ten minutes ago found this issue. We were turning back and going to Los Angeles Lax to land and deal with it. But since we're past the midway point, we're going all the way to Hawaii. But he told everybody, and everyone started kind of freaking out because one engine is down and you have two more hours until Hawaii. No turnaround.

00:35:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, but you get to the point of no return, right, It's like, well, it'll take two hours to get back or two hours to get there.

00:35:57
Speaker 8: I was.

00:35:59
Speaker 2: I did a short center interview with Sean Bradley, the former BYU player. He was on a Mormon mission in Sydney, Australia, and I went over and did this feature on Sean Bradley going door to door prostolytizing, you know, talking about his religion. So coming back, we are two hours out of Sydney and I'm on the wing. I'm seated the window right on the wing with a woman who'd never flown before, and all of a sudden, I just see this black plume of smoke, and she'd already been gripping my hand like she was pat you know, just terrified.

00:36:44
Speaker 3: She goes, what was that?

00:36:46
Speaker 2: And I casually said, we just blew an engine. What does that mean? I said, we're gonna have to go back. So we were two hours coming back from Australia. We had to fly back, change planes. We were like two or three hours waiting and then we have to go back. And then the woman was sitting next to me on the way back, she stayed awake the entire time, gripping the uh the kind of the railings there on your on your seats. Oh my god. But I just remember boom, and I said, we just blew our engine. Yeah, Jo, It is.

00:37:26
Speaker 5: Funny too, because like you're you're over the open ocean. You're like, this feels worse somehow the result will be the exact same thing if they go south. But like, yeah, it's just a little weather.

00:37:36
Speaker 2: But can't you touch down on the water like Sully did, as opposed to trying to touch down in a field somewhere?

00:37:44
Speaker 3: You can?

00:37:44
Speaker 10: I'm guessing these success rate is fairly loud.

00:37:47
Speaker 2: Okay, What's like I did a hot air balloon one time, bad idea intentions were great, and I thought, you know what, I'm gonna take my wife be like a sun set hot air balloon. And it's okay. First of all the thing that blower where they go and you could singe your eyebrows. And so it's my wife, me and then the pilot and I just remember it was so hot in there, and all you could do is think when you're up there is God, this is gonna hurt if we fall. And you know, my wife said stop looking down, and I go, okay, all right. Then we get ready to land. Well I see where we're trying to land. All of a sudden there's like this fence that was right there, and the guy goes, hey, this might hurt. I go what So we hit the ground, we go over the fence, and so the baskets upside down. Now you know, we had brought like wine and cheese and all that stupid lovey dovey stuff everywhere, like stuff all over the place. We were the crackers. We're like all over the place. And then I go and then we get out of the hot air balloon, and I think, I'm thinking, you know, this's a nice little sunset. This is great. And it turned out to be just one of those that we see hot air balloons and we both got not going to do that again.

00:39:22
Speaker 4: Yeah, Pauline, and you probably prepaid right, Oh yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, can you ask for your money backup? You have a rough landing like that.

00:39:29
Speaker 8: I don't.

00:39:30
Speaker 2: I didn't think of it. I just was happy. And then you're away from your car, so they have cars, they're vans that are following you. And then you know, we get out and then other people who were in their hot air balloons probably had beautiful landings, and then they see us and we're still shaking. We got you know, cheese, I got you know, monster cheese in my ear. Yes, yes, time. You can't live your.

00:39:56
Speaker 9: Life in fear as I do, but you know there's a lovely romantic you from the sky that important. My wife to this day was very upset. We went to Hawaii for our honeymoon. I wouldn't want to go in one of these little helicopter or prop planes that you know goes over the volcanoes and everything, because I just didn't feel safe doing that. So I don't know, like, you know, there's got to be a way where you can enjoy a beautiful view without being in like a big picnic basket and a hot air balloon with some people. That's my tick.

00:40:23
Speaker 2: Thank you, Todd. I did the helicopter above the volcano.

00:40:27
Speaker 9: Oh yeah, seems to have made it out, Okay, Yeah.

00:40:30
Speaker 2: I survived, Todd. It was pretty spectacular. Although one of my kids threw up all over the place in a helicopter. Yeah yeah, yeah, kind of hot. Hard to hide from, you know, vomit in the helicopter, yes, yes, stealing.

00:40:45
Speaker 5: I think that's my thing with like hot air balloons and the helicopters is there's no backup plan like a plane can glide. Those just kind of if something goes wrong, you're just dropping like a stone's I know.

00:41:00
Speaker 2: Thank you, Deil, You're welcome. Marvin Best and worst of the weekend.

00:41:04
Speaker 7: Best of the weekend. I hated Coleman Domingo as Joe Jackson. That's how good of an actor he was. I like, I hated Joe Jackson because Coleman Domingo was so good as Joe Jackson. Boy, he was not nice to Michael. Worst of the weekend the Atlanta Hawks home crowd. That sounded like Madison Square Garden, Atlanta, where's your home crowd? But you know what, the flight, the hotel, the seats in Atlanta were probably cheaper than just those bleed seats at Madison Square Garden. So I can see why.

00:41:33
Speaker 2: Paulie Best and Worst of the week, Best of the weekend.

00:41:36
Speaker 4: The Celtics win, but I think to see Jason Tatum back at full speed in under a year with his achilles injury, it feels like medicine is making a turn in sports. Like Shoho Tani didn't really miss much with his elbow procedure and they didn't use a phrase Tommy john.

00:41:51
Speaker 2: And but I wonder about Dante di Vincenzo if he's having that surgery like right now, because Jason Tatum, yeah, said he had it right away and that helped him come back. Your Worst of the weekend.

00:42:03
Speaker 4: My other best is the Jets draft. And I'm not an analyst, but base on off what the analysts say, they may have gotten five starters. I'm kind of done with the Jets stinking. I don't really like or hate them in any way, but I think it'd be kind of cool to see them go on a run of relevancy and be a good team. It'd been bad for too long. It's important, it's a boring storyline.

00:42:21
Speaker 2: Okay, Adam in La Hi, Adam, Best and Worst of the Weekend.

00:42:26
Speaker 8: Good morning, Dan, Dennett's my best and worst of the weekend. My best was the Dodgers taking two out of three from those hot Cubs. Also a second best, which was Lebron late game heroics willing the Lakers to overtime win in the series three to zero lead, which I know they lost last night Game four.

00:42:44
Speaker 3: But you know, Lakers and five.

00:42:46
Speaker 8: And then my worst was I looked just as surprised as Sean McVay looked with the selection of Ty Simpson. I mean, really, which could have been a long term plan. What's fine? But I agreed with you, Dan, like why not mackay Lemon or another immediate impactful player, Like you said, we're right there on the cuss and winning the Super Bowl. It's not going to help right now unless unfortunately Matthew Stafford goes down injured. But just seem awkwards as less snee and general manager and Sean mcbear are always seemingly on the same page. So that was a little odd. But again, I have a great week, appreciate your time. You're the best, DP.

00:43:18
Speaker 2: Thank you, Buden. That's Adam in Los Angeles. Yeah, I don't care what Sean McVay says. He I think he was surprised disappointed, salting, but I get it. I would be because I'm already hearing from Seahawk fans. I know you won the Super Bowl. I'm just saying I thought the Rams were the best team last year that I saw, and talent wise, you won the Super Bowl and you did it in convincing fashion. Congratulations. The Rams. According to DraftKings, are the favorite to win the Super Bowl this year. So that's why I was bringing up, you're that close. You got Stafford for this year, maybe another year. DeVante Adams thirty four, Puka Nakua. Hopefully you know, he stops doing stupid things. You know, this is the thirteenth pick in the draft and he's not going to do anything for a couple of years. Probably. I just man, I could get I can get the best tight end. I could get the best wide receiver. They're both available, man, maybe maybe. First of all, Ty Simpson, I did see him play games, even the Florida State game. I thought he really handled himself pretty well because he was under fire the entire game. He does have talent, but man, fifteen starts no go, no go. Can't do that, So that bothers me. The fact that Alabama was moving on from him. It was either he was going to Miami and he was going to get six and a half million dollars nil, or he's going pro. But when less Snead reportedly tells Ty Simpson's dad that Ty is going to be a first round pick, will the Rams have a first round pick? It just felt like his dad may have made that decision because based off less Snead saying, your son is a first round town. And look, I know I brought up you know that my friend who was a scout said he didn't have a first round grade, but he said somebody will draft him in the first round. I just wouldn't take somebody who doesn't have that many starts.
