Speaker 1: We're actually going to start with the Colorado Rockies and this story from Dennis Lynn, which he replugged here. The Rockies have been suggesting pitches from the dug out this season, as Colorado attempts its first four game series win against the Dodgers since twenty eighteen. Here's more in a practice some baseball people think will eventually sweep the league. Now this came out yesterday morning. The Rockies lost to the Dodgers. They end up splitting the series. But still that's a huge success for a franchise that was brutal last year. And I'm not saying this particular pitch calling has anything to do with them winning or not in a four game set. The point is we want to bring this up as it's starting to grow in the league. Kratz did a great segment on It weeks back with Alana when those two were on the show. Aj I wasn't on that show. You guys are smart catchers that host a show every day. So let's dive into this. We now have the Marlins involved. The guy who does this for the Rockies was with the Marlins. They bring them over. Now the Rockies are in. The Rockies are suggesting pitches. Take that for what it is, this college baseball.

You want to call the pitches from the dugout. Don't get maud of the catcher, and don't get out of the pitcher when they give up hits or runs. It's not their fault. It's your fault, whoever's calling the pitches. And the biggest thing I'll never get is Don Cooper are all pitching coach of the White Sox. We call, you know, let me call the game. We hang a slider and the guy to get a hit, he say, why'd you throw the slider? I go, Coop, you want to call the pitches, we can go fastball, in, fastball, away, curveball, slider, change up. You call them all first signed, last time, whatever sign you want go for it. He goes, I don't want that pressure exactly. Shut up, he goes. Listen, if you're calling from the dugout, you can't give out anybody but yourself, and you can't give out anybody but the computer. And by the way, the guys don't always have the same stuff every day, and that's hard to see from the side when you're not back there kitchen, that's my thing like and plus guys move in the box. Guy, you gotta read swings. It's hard to read that stuff from the dugout.

Part is alone Leashman, Leishman getting fired if this doesn't go well. No, he's getting fired either way because the team didn't bring in the best pitcher, so they're trying something new. I get that they're trying something that could be innovative, but really they're a half a year behind the Marlins, a year behind the Marlins, whatever it is, and they're doing it because exactly what who said it?

He was the minor league pitching coordinator that created these relationships with these guys and created that Well, this guy was helping with the Marlins, and now he gets to create a spreadsheet, create a PowerPoint to get a job and says, you know what, I think this could work. What do the Rockies have to lose? The Rockies say, oh, it's so tough to pitch in Colorado. And if he would have said no, no, no, well we're calling that's what we're throwing out there, that's what you guys are throwing. And you go out in the media and say it's.

Well, the pictures can do with they want to do. And so okay, so are we charting every time that the pitcher shook off? And are you only bringing up the the good times or the bad times when the pitcher gives up a hit and you're not bringing up the bad times when the computer gives up a hit. It's just like Coop said, don your pitching coach. He was he was just he never was like, hey day, why did you call that slider that the guy swung and missed at? No, it's just all results based and if you're not willing to stand up and be like I called it, this is why, then your team doesn't get better. All you're doing is just check we threw pitch number sixty three. Check we threw pitch number sixty four. Hey, you know what the numbers said. This is what we should have done, because teams are going to sit there and start going, oh, well, I hit fifty six on two to two sliders, so we're facing the rockies. They're definitely throwing me at two to two slider because that's the like, that's what the computer says it'll be. It'll be very predictable, and it's not going to forge winning winning a world series. To me is those little things that create playoff teams, that create world series winning teams.

Let's say he goes arbitration and he goes let's say the free agent and he goes to I don't know, I'm throwing a random team out there. The Cubs and Craig Council's like, hey, call the game. I talked to our catchers. We have two freshman catchers, and you know what we learn from each situation. But you can read, Okay, that guy just fouled a ball straight into our dugout. He's late as all get out, don't throw a breaking ball. And then in high school they throw a breaking ball and he swings and misses at it. So it's completely different.

Speaker 3: I mean, I remember catching and watching games from the dugout. When I would games, I wasn't playing in the backup catcher. Whoever it was, would they give up a hit or something, They come over and say, what do you think about that pitch selection. I'm like, you're in the game. I'm sitting over here watching from the side. I don't know what that guy has that day. And in the end of the day, listen, I'm gonna say this about scouting reports, and I'm going to say this about anything you want to say about baseball. If you make a good pitch, most of the time. It doesn't matter what pitch it is. Krats, tell me if I'm wrong, you're gonna get the dude out. Okay, if you make a crappy pitch, most of the time, that's when they put their a swing and they get a ball, hit a ball hard. Right. So, if I have a guy who throws a lot of sliders, and there's a guy who comes up and he's hitting six fifty off sliders. But I got a guy out there that is best pitch of a slider, I'm still gonna throw a slider. I just don't want him to hang it. Because nobody hits a good slider. No one hits a good curveball. No one hits a well located, down in a way fastball. They might shank one the other way, but they're not doing damage. Most of the damage doesn't happen every once in a while, but not more that times than not. Right, the pitches that get hit are mistakes most of the time, So it doesn't it's not the pitch selection all the time. It's the pitch execution and until and listen, so you can sit over there and do beep it. He got pity boopity boop over here all you want, but if it doesn't, if that guy doesn't have that pitch that day, then he doesn't have that pitch that day. And sometimes I mean, how many times krats did you catch? And you're like, oh, you have whoever you're catching. I'll use Tanaka right, because he had a split and he had a little cutter and all that he comes out of the first thing, he can't find his split, right, so you're like, okay, how can we figure out counts? Even though it might not be the right situation to throw a split to maybe get his feelback, Like O two, he jumps ahead of a guy. Oh two, You're like, okay, let's throw a split, and you're like, point at the dirt, like throw it in the dirt so he feels it out front. Right, That stuff from the dugout they can't do. That's the stuff for me. Like you can call a pitch you want, but at the end of the day, it's about feel.

Speaker 4: Certain guys, certain guys finish their cutter more out front they finish it, or some guys had to get on top of their cutter. They had to think about that. Well, if every fastball they're throwing is up. Okay, maybe that cutter will help them finish down on the next fastball. Get that next feel there was guys I played with that if they would throw their sinker one pitch, they couldn't throw the cutter the very next pitch. It would almost have to be like a sink or four steamer to the cutter, slider slider to the cutter. Just because pictures don't like and you read that kind of stuff. But go to AJ screen. Just AJ's single here and I went over right AJ's right shoulder. I want you to just point to what's behind there so people who are watching can see that mask was in a Perfect Game from phil Umber. You think phil Umber has any You look at one of those You look at one of these sheets that they're using, and phil Umber's sheet wouldn't look all green, meaning this is not good. Like we're not we're not going in these areas. You have to walk a guy through nine innings to be able to catch a complete game of perfect game. You have to be able to walk some guys through five innings to be able to only give up three runs. What's on the numbers is probably ninety two percent of the time in AJ's head unless AJ does zero work pregame and all he's worried about is hitting. Like, if you're not doing your work, then yeah, you know what you need somebody else telling you. But they've even admitted in all of these interviews, well, you know, it's just really a lot of the stuff that we already talk about, and we're just there for suggestions.

If it's freaking Clayton Kershaw, if it's Max Schurz, are sitting on the bench, the pitcher on the mound that is prepared as prepared as Michael King knows more than what's somebody in the dug out holding a sheet knows.
