It's the non tender deadline tomorrow, so you'll see some players cut, some names that we know. You'll see some players traded away, including one that we're going to get to in a moment. Let's charge charge multiple Braves moves. I want to start with friisel Iglesias. The Braves opted to not trade him at the deadline. Instead, they keep him even though they weren't in contention. He pitches very well down the stretch, and now he's back to a team that's contending in twenty twenty six one year, sixteen million bucks. This is a good barometer of approximately where the price will go for a closer like this. There are better ones out there, so they might be pushing twenty plus a year. But Mark Bowman helping us out with the final forty five appearances in twenty twenty five for Rice Ilglacia's Todd Father that is pristine one two five ERA thirty percent K percentage twenty one out of twenty two saves in those final forty five appearances. This was him answering a question from a fan wondering if he would be a setup guy if the Braves land a legit closer. I think this is their closer for twenty twenty six, and they're paying him the same that they paid him in the previous season sixteen million bucks to bring him back. One other thing to add before you comment is some think that he was more prone to signing with Atlanta because they kept him. Do you think that's the that's a thing of players.

He's been a part of a bunch more. I think you're more susceptible of trying to link back with that team. And I say this knowing that won the relationships and too comfort just being comfortable. And I know when I was a free agent, I was a guy that basically said, hey, listen, you know we haven't got much offered these first month, month and a half. Let's go back to the teams that I was with and see maybe there's a connection there. You know, maybe I'll take a little less just to go back to there because I know the place. Yeah, it's just about being comfortable about knowing your surroundings and do you like the people around you, And I think that that was a major cause of this. I think it's a perfect place for him. I love Ross Ayo. He's a really good dude, Scottie. He's fun loving dude. He can pitch. I know he's had some injuries over the years, but this is a guy. I mean, shoot, one year, sixteen million. What happens if he does it again what he did in the back half, You never know. Then he can get a bigger deal. But yes, I think this is a great sign the Braves keep doing this. This is like you know, you know, day Drave all over again with with this. Like last year, they were the first ones. They came out and got the right handed pitcher from the White Sox. I'm just having a little brain fard here of who it was, but they came out and I think it was low Pez right right now, Lopez, and we're like, man, what a great what a great deal for them. So they're they're they're firing right now early and they're gonna be firing offten.

No, Like I've been traded, cut, rehired, fired again, re signed, like I've pretty much gone through every type of transaction. Like I was pissed that the Brewers got rid of me in nineteen. I was pissed that they went and got YASMANI Grandal had the Brewers called me like at the end of nineteen and when I was a minor league free agent in the middle of the season, I'd going back there like I had while I was pissed at him, you still want to be in the big leagues. Rycelle Iglesias doesn't have that issue. If he was, you know, maybe he was mad he didn't get traded because he didn't get to go play in the playoffs. Like sometimes guys would be cool like I'm fine getting traded, like we ain't going nowhere this year. Our team is brutes mcgoots. But so the whole like feeling, ah man, I feel it's different when a guy's been with an organization for six years and then they're like, ah, he left in free agency, no way he comes back, or he gets traded part way through. You don't want your big time free agents, which risell is not to go and test the other waters, to go and see and talk to a team like hey, what's this clubhouse? Like what's your travel? Like? How's that different? Especially you know when you have a guy that has to be resigned for a decent contract. So I just think this case is it's not the same case. But I'm sure there are people who would be like, no, I'm not resigning back there if they traded me. Screw those guys, which, you know, check your feelings a little bit.

There are other teams even throwing anything out there. And the reason I ask that is many teams are kind of softerly on in the offseason and they just dance. They call the agents, they tickle, They say, oh, we like this part about him, we don't like this part about him. This is the range that we think. We talked a lot of free agents right over off seasons and they tell us about the whole little tap dance that they do, and he gets a call, Hey, here's a real offer. Maybe you'll get a few mill more. But if you want to wait and be the last man standing out of the closer carsel, which there are many of them, you might not get the number that looks like this. This is a comfortable spot. They go for it, so I give them credit on that front. You have one more pointcraft and then I want to get to what else the Braves did.

Speaker 2: I love sixteen I mean we'd even hit on it. I love sixteen million for a closer right now at thirty five years old. Chappie signed an extension for thirteen a year last year and he's he's the closer of the year for the American League. Like for him. I like that Alexanthopolis has always done this. There's certain organizations that say we'd love to have you back. Some organizations say we'd love to have you back, but at a little hometown discount. There's other organizations and I know AA Alexanthopolis is that type where he's like, here's what I know you're worth. You go out and pedal that deal, come back to us, and that's what we'll give you. As long as everybody's honest and upfront. That's all they're looking form.

Speaker 1: Hey, with Iglesias, I think you made an adjustment too. You give a lot of homers in the first half of the season. There were quite a few sliders catching a little too much of the plate. You didn't see as much of that in the second half of the year. You look at some of the pitches that missed for him in the first half of the season that led to homers. They had quite a few what Fangrafts calls meltdowns. That's a new stat that we'll have to get to at some point. They pegged him at eleven. That's a lot, but a lot of action on the wrong side came in the beginning of the season, which happened to be bad timing for an Atlanta team that played much better down the stretch. But they kind of lost it early. Okay. So step two for the Braves is the trade they make with the Astros two very good defensive players, moving Nick Allen from the Braves over to Houston right, and he played really good shortstop defense for them last year at one of the weakest bats in the Bigs. Mauricio Dubon goes the other way, super utility guy who can play a number of different spots and play it well. And he's a better offensive player than Nick Allen. Some people online are like, oh see, this is their backup option for shortstop. I think the Braves are going for a little more big game hunting on their every day starting shortstop. But Dubon gives you a ton of insurance. Todd Father, it's not just at short as the Allbeasts dealt with a number of injuries over his career and he's coming off surgery. Austin Riley's dealt with some injuries lately. So this is the guy you can plug in just about anywhere for Atlanta and he kind of what some people will say, ups your floor, right, This is a better hitter than Nick Allen and a guy who should play comparable enough defense at a number of different spots to make you better.

Speaker 4: Yeah, And I think having that one guy that can play different spots is key, especially for a Braves team that has the injuries, that has the guys on the team where you're like, oh, I hope he hope he's healthy all the way through the year, so this guy can step in. He's not afraid to play any position. I love Nick Allen played with him in the USA team when we want a silver medal. But you know, his defense is great. It's got to pick that bat up. I think he will. You know, he's not the home run hitter. He's not the guy who's going to drive in you know, eighty runs a game or a season. Excuse me, but again, you know, I don't know, you know what Houston was kind of thinking around this part. But you know, we never know. We never know what a team's thinking. They're trying to set up room for somebody else. But again, Dubam is a really good athlete. He's a good player. Is he going to wow you with the bat? No, but he is a pretty decent offensive player.

Speaker 1: I know what they were thinking, let's save a good chunk of money so we can spend it elsewhere. Because Houston is actually one of those team sprats that dances around the soft salary cap number. So those that don't think it works, it doesn't work on everyone, right unless you have a super hard cap, which the NBA doesn't even have if you keep your own guys, Houston dances around what is the luxury tax number. Jim Crean does that sometimes over, sometimes under, but that's the game that they play, and he really treats it like a salary cap.

Speaker 2: He does. And I think this move was precipitated by the fact that they got Carlos Korea. They got him earlier, and it's like, well, you know what, if we take this on, we got to dump a little bit salary later. So moving around the cap, or moving around the CBT tax threshold as they want to call it. I hope it doesn't come back to Burnham because Houston's Houston's been there, They've been around that area the whole time, but they're paying some of their stars a little bit more. And when you have injuries and you're not willing to go over that cap, not willing to go over that threshold, sometimes you don't have the backup plans and du Bond's not going to light the world on fire at the plate, but he gives you gold Glove utility defense, which for the Astros it kind of mitigated some of those injuries and able to him to step in and sit through there till their starter came back. But the Braves now have been a team that have dudes that play one fifty five to one sixty two all year maybe they're seeing, Hey, you know what if we bring a guy like this in. Yes, we're still going to go after a shortstop, but now we have a guy who can step in and do bond and give everybody a day off. So instead of our one to fifty five's, we're playing one forty one forty five and we're staying healthy the whole time.

Speaker 1: The one other thing here is Ken wrote about how war wins Abo replacement strength for this position doesn't necessarily have to be super high for you to be a successful team. He pointed to the Mariners, the Yankees, Milwaukee, Cleveland, and Detroit as ranking in the bottom ten in Fangraft's war at the shortstop position, and he added the Toronto Blue Jays, who in September turned to Andre Semenez over at shortstop, who was one of the worst offensive players in the sport this season. I see all of that, but I would still rather have a shortstop that can thump. I think you could say that about almost any position, right, Like you could be a team that's a World Series team and doesn't have a great player offensively at one particular position, but like you'd rather have a dude that can mash and handle the position defensively, so I don't want that to be used as a cop out. I think the Braves are looking for shortstop. I just think that they want Kim. He might want to go somewhere else. There aren't a ton of great options out there this year. Trademarket pending. I mean, Ken mentioned Corey Seger in his in his article, I don't know if that's a feasible spot, and he also mentioned how they're actually on Seegers no trade list. That doesn't mean he wouldn't wave it, but we also don't know if he's necessarily available. That's a whole other world. But can we just agree that if you have the option of a shortstop kit that can match, you rather have that.

And the reason the Blue Jays got to where they were was because Boba Schett was driving in tons of rounds, So I get it. Andre Sementez helped them win throughout that stretch without Bo playing short. But I don't know, not a big fan of that stat there, Ken, but it's a great defensive position. Braves have really struggled there in the last well since they got rid of Dansby.

He had a long power draft, his defense wasn't as sharp eggs of Vila numbers not as good. Right, Almost everything was down across the board, not to mention stolen bases sixty seven, which led baseball in twenty twenty four. Todd Father he totaled thirty seven stolen bags and he played a full season. He didn't look the same, and this does help to explain what the problem was.

He's been rehabbing at the ballpark basically every day in the offseason, and then on Thursday he said it was a left quad strain, which is a partial tear. And he didn't want to make it sound like the injury was too serious. I mean, I'm not a doctor here. We just play that little ding at the top of the segment. But Kratz it does sound like it impacted him definitely.

Todd knows there's dudes that don't play through Jack. They're like, ooh no, no, no, not gonna make it through this one. You know, they look on the mound and it's probably Trek Scubele or Chris Sale. But there's dudes that play through everything. So that's awesome that he wants to play through this that he wanted to be out there and felt like his eighty percent was better than anything else that they were going to put out there. This is where the training staff, the manager, the front office, the coaches need to be able to step in and say, we get it. You could be a franchise player for us. We have other people like Noel Vie Marte used to play shortstop. I don't think he's a shortstop anymore. They pushed him the right field. So a half a eighty percent Ellida Cruz, it's short is probably better than a lot of guys. But is there a chance that they could have gotten him off his feet, that they could have gotten him when he's in the middle of a slump of two hundred and one at bats where he had one home run like that, they could have said, hey, you know what this thing's really We can tell it's really bugging you and you're not one hundred percent, and we'll slot Noel v Marte in for a week. You'll come back, you'll be banger ring. He might fight you, he might say no, I want to play because I play. That's what I do. But you got to be able to make that decision. What's best for the team because the Reds clearly needed every single game to get to where they got to.

Toy eat up innings and pitched decently in Cincinnati, India just didn't work out for the team. Was sub one hundred, was at eighty nine ops plus this year.
