Speaker 1: So Phillis win today when Sunday we're recording this on Sunday, this is running on Monday. Phillies wins Sunday. They they're now ten and three under Don Mattingly. Jim, as you pointed out, they played, had thirteen straight days of unscheduled days off, they had that rain out last week, and then they played a double adder. And I was reading your story and I like this quote here from Don Maddingly. Let me pull this up.

We're throwing the ball better starters in bullpen, we've caught the ball better, we've overcome mistakes, we've come won some close games. Right now at this point, we're in a pretty good space. Now we're hoping we've hit a stride and can and can maintain this pace.

In that quote, he said, starting to get the feeling that we're never out of any game, which is completely the opposite of the way things felt in the first twenty nine games, where at least nineteen times it felt like they were out of those games. There was a sense that, you know, get behind game over, a sense of dread, and you know they have righted the ship. And though there are three games under five hundred, not where you want to be. There's still a ton of season left, and they headed to me in a positive direction. You know, ten and three over the last thirteen games, that thirteen game stretch with no off days. Four series wins in a row, and that's to me, what it's always been about over the long haul. Take those series and the way they're doing it. Get a lot of good starts. Another good one on Sunday with Christopher Sanchez, Actually another great one. He's on one of his heaters. Three really really good ones in a row. Schwarber's hitting bombs, Harper's had a terrific season, and Brandon marsh remains maybe the best story on the team now leading the Majors with a three fifty three batting average, hitting seven three seventeen since last May third of twenty twenty five. So that's a nice that ain't no small sample size. This guy is one of the most improved players in baseball.

Speaker 3: Yeah, a lot of really positive things happening, boys, and that's it's still confounding as to why the pitching starting pitching was so bad in the early part of the season, sort of across the board, you know, he didn't know what you're going to get out of Taiwan and and but I thought you were going to get in a much more improved Nola. Not as good as last outing here against Colorado. Still some issues with Lozardo not that's a little confounding too, where he gets into those innings where he just can't get out of it. But it's cool to see that these guys are not so much out of it that their offense, which has picked up, gets them back into it. And so they're getting contributions from a lot of different people. I mean, you know, I like to talk about Justin Crawford kudos to his first home run. I mean, he's done some things. There's a bunch of guys who are contributing something that we thought would happen during the course of the year. That's why I dropped, like the hundred wins season on these guys, because I thought that they would get off to a little bit better start.

Speaker 2: But now they've sort of righted the ship in a lot of ways.

Speaker 3: And it's a long season. And as they talked about before, you'd rather do it now than do it later. You'd rather be improving on and uh, and they're certainly doing that on a bunch of different levels. I still think they only have like maybe one or two errors since Don Manningley has taken over. I don't think that that's directly related to Don Manningley. I just think the guys have just locked in a little bit better. I think that the shock of no longer having Topper is part of that. That these guys need to start, you know, uh, you know, focusing better. And I think that's what's happening, and you're seeing that on both sides of the baseball.

Speaker 1: Tom, you had another quote in your story from Brandon Marsh and marsh Mars Marsh is a great quote. You know, after he says something good, he's just so energetic and he says such says such like, I don't want to say crazy stuff, but he's very colorful in the way he speaks. And he said, you know, we knew what we had in house. We knew what type of team we were. We're an explosive team with good pitching. We just didn't show that at the beginning of the year. That's nobody's fault but ours. So it's on us to turn it around and get where we want to go. It's a long hill we've got a climb, but We're built for it. Starts with their arms. We've got the best in the league in here, and the best bats too. We've just got to keep clicking on all cylinders. And then he did he do any barking? Did he do any And afterwards he does that every once in a while.

Speaker 4: He didn't do any barking, but he was very upat that. That happens when he swinging the bat, like everything, everything feels good. I want to make an observation about marsh He's a very good teammate. Man does that guy share the credit and praise others? And you know he's kind of I mean, justin Craufford is that home run the other night and it was kind of an electric moment and he's he's like wanting to jump over the railing and give him a hug. And you can see why people in that room really like him because he's a good teammate. It goes both ways, you know, he he's good to his teammates, they're good to him because being called a good teammate is such an amazing compliment in this game. Because you're in each other's face for seven months, it's easy to get sick and tired of people on eight on people and say get the hell away from me. But when that doesn't happen, and people really respect for the kind of teammate that says something.

It was like a spring of twenty three and it was getting down towards the end of spring training, and I was looking for something to do. Speaker 1: Like like just like whatever, you however, you wanted to find baseball player who enjoys the most? Every single person said Brendan Marsh. Brenda Marsh. And you know there were some other guys that were mentioned as well, Marsh and Ranger Marsh and Hoskins, Marsh and Schwarber, but Brandon Marsh got mentioned by everybody because he's so positive, so upbeat, such a good teammates, such a good guy, you know. I then I told him about that, I said, you know, everybody mentioned. He's like, Wow, that's pretty cool, man. You know, that's pretty cool.

Bryce Harper batting four twenty nine double, four home runs, five RBIs, four walks, one strikeout all week for Bryce Harper, one strikeout all week, a fifteen hundred ops over four hundred points higher than Brandon marsh who, uh, we just talked about how insanely hot he's been, so Bryce Harper has been great. I mean, you know, we didn't even mention Kyle Schwarber.

You know, It's like, should have watched the first twenty eight games. It's not like that all the time.

Of course, Harper, marsh Schwarber and we touched earlier on Alec Bohm and Trey Turner and those both of those guys had huge games on Saturday, and I thought it was just so interesting because of course Alec Bohm sits on the bench for two straight days. Don manningly tells him on Wednesday, I guess you know you're not going to play Thursday in frin do me a favor. I don't want you to pick up the bat, not once on Thursday. Just don't pick up the bat, don't come out fielding ground balls. I just want you to take a real mental break. He comes out on Friday, take some early BP, take some early infield like he normally does, like a normal game. And you know, I talked to him coming off the field on on Saturday before, Yeah, no, it was Friday. Talked to him on Friday before he went out there and asked him a lot of questions about some of the kind of what's going on. Is you think the reset will work? And I also asked him about the off the field pressures, free agency, and of course the family stuff. And he said, for me, I leave all that stuff at the door. I show up and it's just like I'm at the baseball field. It's baseball. I obviously want the results to be better. It feels like it's been a lot longer than hat really has. In the grand scheme of things, it feels like it's been halfway through the season. For all the other stuff, free agency, whatever, I don't feel it don't feel like it affects six forty, meaning first pitch at six forty and then he goes out on Saturday, Homer's in his first at bat, Homer's in his second at bat, doubles in his fourth a bat. Teammates are going crazy. They absolutely love it, and I mean, you can't help but conclude that that two day break helped him a little bit.

Speaker 1: And then and then also to kind of dovetail off that Trey Turner has been on the field every day. I mean, I don't know if it's every day this week, but he was on the field earlier this week. Take an extra hitting on the field. And for that, again, people that don't know because they're not the ballpark every day. Trey usually hits indoors. He usually does not come on the field and hit. So when you see him out in the field hitting for an extended period of time, you know that something's not going right. And I saw him in Miami on Saturday night. He was hitting in the cage after the game, and he then he goes out on Saturday and picks up four hits. He goes four for five, and then after the game he says, I didn't pick up a bat once today. I didn't take one swing until I stepped in the batter's box and I said, well, can you kind of you know, what do you usually do? He's like, well, yesterday I probably took three hundred and fifty swings. I usually take about one hundred down average on a daily basis, And I don't know how common that is. I don't know what number that is, where that ranks. But he said, probably in the four days before I probably took about thousand swings, and then Saturday I took seven and they were the only seven they were all coming in the game. So hey, sometimes maybe less is more. Sometimes maybe clearing your your mind can help a little bit.

And you know, when they start banging, some of these other managers across Major League Baseball? But there may be something in the back of his mind, in his soul, in the deep part of his wherever where you know, he's being affected by whatever's happening with him, whether he's had this slow start thinking about that or his family issues or whatever. But I think just sometimes taking that albatross off your neck. Look at you know, we've talked about, you know, Brandon marsh doing the same thing in Triple A last year and then coming back and he's going like gangbusters since then.

Speaker 3: And that's when who was it, who was the second basement that we had for a couple of years, who was with the Cleveland Indians for a little while Mark Lewis when Louis turns over to Jim Tomy at that time and goes, boy, Jimmy, you're gonna hit a lot.

Speaker 4: It's gotta go empty mind. I guess right, Yeah, that's right. Charlie's the empty head full bet. You know. It's all the same quote. It's like think wrong, think wrong, paralysis by analysis. There these are elite athletes. They've risen to the top of their profession. Any professional athlete in the major league level is an elite athlete at the top of his at the top of his profession, even the ones who aren't very good at the top of their profession. Sometimes you're just gonna let the talent work for it for you, and you can grind and grind and grind, but sometimes you need to just step on the field and let the talent that got you there take over. I think in a lot of cases, especially in baseball, we have over engineered players. They think too much, they have too much information, creates paralysis by analysis, and they're in the cages because they have all these resources. Now, you know, back in the day Ruben at the VET, you have to walk way down the hallway to go on the batting cage. I'm not even sure the visiting team was allowed in there, except maybe when it's raining and you couldn't grind the whole game of the batting kids. You had to actually watch the game, be in the fight with your teammates. And sometimes I think they take too many swings and they grind too much. You know, we all hear the stories about. You know, there was this player in the PGA tour who misread his tea time. And it was a big name a few years ago, and usually he's at the course three hours early and hitting all the shots and getting stretched and everything. He misread his tea time. He shows up like eight minutes before his tea time, and if he missed it, he would have been just qualified. And he goes out there and plays like the round of his life because it just talent took over. You know, Yeah he was and he wasn't thinking too much. He wasn't stewing in how am I going to approach this? How am I going to approach that? Just call and do it sometimes.

Speaker 3: And there's something for routine, There's no question you have to have routine, But at some point that the monotony of the routine can take you out of what you need to do on the field when it's time to play. And and you know, there's that fine line between being routine and being and and and as.

He actually spent some time with the Phillies, but he told me a great story about this guy who was pitching for him. And Frank Cone's out at the yard three four hours before the game.
