Hour 1 – Belichick Hall of Fame fallout continues, Sam Darnold doesn’t play with a chip

The Dan Patrick Show

The outrage over Belichick’s apparent Hall of Fame snub continues. Dan examines the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s statement, Tom Brady weighing in, and how this has all tarnished a celebratory moment for the NFL. Sam Darnold is the first USC quarterback in the Super Bowl, and with plenty of missteps along the way it’d be easy to say he’s looking to shut doubters up.

Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio.

00:00:05
Speaker 2: Our one on this Thursday, Dan and the Dan EDGs Dan Patrick Show. Charles Barklay will join us a little later on Mike Florio from NBC Sports Football Night in America on the fervor that continues with Bill Belichick. We're into day three, the Hall of Fame issuing a statement on voting policy. We'll have that for you coming up eight seven seven three DP Show operator Tyler doing nothing but sitting by ready to take your phone calls. We say, good morning, NBC Sports Network and also Peacock, our streaming partner, and we'll come up with the play of the day, poll question, stat of the day, all of that forthcoming. Well, let me start with the Belichick situation. Nothing is changed, going to change except for the Hall of Fame issued a press release a statement on media reports related to Hall of Fame's Class of twenty twenty six. This is what it says on their official stationery. Pro Football Hall of Fame understands and respects the passionate reaction of many fans, media members, and enshrinement of the Hall itself in light of published reports regarding the voting results. For the class at twenty twenty six. This is a reminder from the Hall, because the Hall goes on to say each year, the Hall reviews the selection process and the composition of the fifty person selection committee. If it's determined that any member or members violated the selection process bylaws, they understand action will be taken that includes the possibility of such selectors they would not remain a member of the committee moving forward. The selection of a new class is the most important duty the Hall of Fame oversees each year, and the integrity of that process cannot be in question. So why did the Hall of Fame put this out? Is that just for public you know, the public consumption of okay, all right, there's integrity to this process, reminding the voters there's integrity to this process. Let's not give information who leaked the Bill Belichick information like hold that get out because to me, it seems simple. If Bill Belichick was told last Friday, he's not going to be in the Hall of Fame, Bill probably told a couple of his friends, who probably then told a couple of their friends, and that eventually that news gets out. That would be the logic that I would apply to this that Bill, you know, reportedly was quoted as saying he was disappointed. Now Seth Wickersham has written books about the Patriots, probably has a connection contact with Bill. Now, once again, this is just applying logic to this. Don Van Natta very good NFL reporter, and you know it doesn't take long to find somebody who finds somebody body who knows the information and who has spoken to Bill Belichick. Now you do have some writers columnists who are coming out and saying, hey, I didn't vote for Bill Belichick. Now if I'm the Hall of Fame, I don't want to hear this. Now nothing's been made official yet, they're supposed to be waiting. So now you're telling me. I for years, I would tell you who I voted for for the Heisman, the Hall of Fame or the Heisman. Folks said, hey, let's wait until the voting is over. And so I complied with that because they didn't want me to say, you know, who I did or didn't vote for. They didn't want to spoil, you know, the ceremony. And this isn't the same as the Hall of Fame, but it is in one regard, and that is you have a vote, you're told not to, you know, reveal your votes, wait until the process, you know, goes to fruition. So I complied with that. But now you have a columnist and Kansas City, a USA Today columnist who were talking about if they did or didn't vote for Bill Belichick. Now, while I applaud you for telling me if you didn't vote for Bill, and that's why I'm okay with that, I mean, it's your vote. I'm okay. I might not like your logic, but it's your vote and I respect whatever you say. However, you came to that conclusion you're not voting for Bill Belichick. And as I told you, somebody who votes talked to me. That was Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. We talked twice, and there were people who just assume Bill Belichick was going in and didn't speak up on his behalf. So there's a lot to factor in here. But the Hall of Fame wants the voters to make sure that they don't reveal their votes until these people are informed. Look the and I mentioned this because the voter said to me, Look, it's flawed with what we did. You narrow it down to five candidates. Now you ask the selection committee. Now we narrow it down to three, Well, you got to get eighty percent. Well if you get to five, why don't we let five in? Or if you get to five, how about the top three vote getters get in? And it has nothing to do with eighty percent, like have something to show for this process, and I don't know if they're going to. All we know is Bill Belichick is not getting in. Tom Brady was on a Seattle radio station and he had this to say about the snub with his former coach.

00:05:40
Speaker 3: I don't understand it. I mean I was with them every day. If he's not a first bout of Hall of Famer, there's really no coach that should ever be a first bout of Hall of Famer, which is completely ridiculous because people deserve it and he's incredible. There's no coach I'd ever want to play. I'd rather play for it. If I'm taking one coach to go out there to win a Super Bowl, give me one season, I'm taking Bill Belichick. So that's enough set. There's nothing outside of that. You know, again, when he comes down the votes and popularity and all that, like, you know, then welcome to the world of voting and you may as well go, you know, try out for the Oscars or whatever, and you know, get a big panel to tell you if you're good or not.

00:06:18
Speaker 2: That's Tom Brady on Seattle Sports seven ten. And this logic, I don't like this logic. Well, Bill's going to get in. I want to get these other people in. If you're going to tell me that Ken Anderson's getting in and else Greenwood they're getting in, and Roger Craig's getting in, great, then we accomplish something here. Now it's at the expense of Bill Belichick, but you can't kind of brush off Belichick, where then you have a candidate like Eli Manning. And Eli reportedly is not going to be in the Hall of Fame again this year. But the reason why Eli is going to get into the Hall of Fame he beat Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. So you beat the best quarterback the best coach, but the best coach is not getting in on the first ballot. It's just tricky. But there's so much attached to this because if I said, who got into the Hall of Fame last year, we move on, right, I don't know if we go, oh, of course such and such and such, and we move on, and we'll move on after this to the next class. The guys who will get in if it's Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, who else is getting in? But this is tricky because Belichick doesn't get in. And if he got in, now those other coaches who are waiting to go into the Hall of Fame, now they got to wait another year at least. And you know that's where I hate seeing that this is supposed to be a celebratory moment for the NFL, and it's a misstep. But the voters voted. I don't like the process of it. You have every right if you don't want to vote Bill Belichick. You think he's a cheater and he's gonna I'm gonna get you know, my pound of flesh here. Okay, if you tell me that there should be transparency with this, just tell me you did or you didn't. I don't like the witch hunt, but there are people who and I want to apologize to Bill Pollian because he wasn't sure if he voted for Bill Belichick, which sounded a little suspicious coming from a former Colt's front office member and a Hall of Famer. I don't know how you forget who you voted for. There's only five candidates there. It was a while ago to be fair. Yeah, well, and if he voted for Bill, then I apologize because I thought he would be one of the eleven in there. Because these grudges they don't die. But it's day three. I thought Belichick's had pretty good week, all things considered. He's kind of unified everybody, and all of a sudden he becomes a sympathetic figure. I told you that, you know. One of the voters told me there was a sense, is Bill going to come back and coach again? Can we vote somebody in who's coming back to coach again? I mean you, you just can't view it that way. Man, he might come back, he not coming back to the NFL. Okay, And then I don't know if it was by coincidence or not, but then there was an article talking about Bill's not going to be able to get back into the NFL. He's too toxic. Someone just comes out now that he's too toxic. This should have nothing to do with North Carolina. This should have nothing to do with his girlfriend. There should have nothing to do with his record at North Carolina. This is about Belichick and what he did. I want to know somebody says, you know, I just didn't like him. He was mean to me. If that's your reason, then tell me tell us now nobody's going to say that. Man, he hurt my feelings. Man, if that's the case, I got my feelings hurt a few times. Buy some by Bob Knight and Don Shula and Bill Parcells and pat Riley. They're still Hall of famers to me, Yes, Marvin.

00:10:24
Speaker 4: Bill Belichich should get in the Hall of Fame. He's the coach. He's one and one as the Browns head coach in the playoffs. He's got that should get you way in period.

00:10:36
Speaker 2: Yeah, five hundred record, huh okay, thank you Marvin. Yes, Tom.

00:10:40
Speaker 5: It's hard to quantify, but what is the exact level of backlash that would cause the Hall of Fame to have to put out a statement or writers to have to explain their point yes or no?

00:10:48
Speaker 6: Like what is the i'd left to know behind closed doors?

00:10:50
Speaker 5: What was the moment kid who or what happened where we got to put out a statement or I got to let people know and write a column that I did or didn't pick Belichick.

00:10:58
Speaker 2: It just happened. That's why they had put out a statements.

00:11:01
Speaker 6: At the conversations.

00:11:02
Speaker 5: But you know why did the Hall of Fame? What made them decide we got to put out a press.

00:11:07
Speaker 2: Release because Bill Belichick didn't get in on the first ballot. And now there are you know, people behind the scenes talking about this. This got revealed, this got leaked. Now all of a sudden, people are writing columns. Now, all of a sudden, you know who did and didn't vote for Belichick. So this doesn't happen with the Hall of Fame. When's the last time you went, man, there's a leak in the Hall of Fame. But you have one now, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame wants to stop this because, hey, the integrity of the Hall of Fame, and really, you got to look at the families involved in that. There's so many people. It's not just one person, it's a family, it's teammates, front office. I mean, so many people can be attached to one candidate. And that's where you have to be fair to everybody here.

00:11:56
Speaker 7: Yeah, Paulie, when I saw the press release by the Hall of Fame, it made me wonder if this story is not over. And that was the Hall of Fame saying we're onto something here and this is step one of the cleanup.

00:12:10
Speaker 2: I have a text into somebody I trust with the Hall of Fame and I'm trying to find out. I know the system is flawed the last two years, and they were going to change it before this year. From what I'm told, more than likely it's going to change now. I don't know what that means because I was told that Wednesday morning. Is it going to change where we get five candidates? Is there going to be one coaching candidate, and then there's going to be a contributor and then there's going to be three players. How about we just have five people go in that you know a coach is going to go in, You're going to have your contributor, and then you're going to have three players who retired a long, long time ago. That's how it should be. Celebrate this, and they're not going to. That's a sad part of it.

00:13:01
Speaker 8: Yeah, And there's something that really cracks me up about the NFL and that it.

00:13:07
Speaker 2: Is there any sport that is more unsure of what it's doing day to day.

00:13:12
Speaker 8: Than the I mean, the voting process in the Hall of Fame keeps changing because it can't figure out we got this backlog, so now we only let in five people, then we got to vote this way.

00:13:21
Speaker 2: No, we got to change it to do that way.

00:13:22
Speaker 8: That's just to figure out who they're honoring in the Hall of Fame. That's not even getting into what is a catch and why can you do this? But you can't do that. This year we're focusing on holding. Next year we're going to focus on past interference. And they still prosper and they do. Is that this like odd chaos sort of part of the success where you never really know what it's going to be that year.

00:13:43
Speaker 2: What would we be talking about this week? Probably the match up here, maybe Lebron going back to Cleveland for the final time. Yannis being traded. The NFL is in the news. That's why when you know, we were talking about college football and what's going on. Big Ten college football loved that they got attention we were talking about college football instead of them being buried with the NFL playoffs. I don't know if the NFL now you know, we've talked about this before. Any publicity is good publicity. I've never subscribed to that This is not a good week, I think for the NFL. But you're talking about the process, you're bringing back candidates. Nobody's talking about Else Greenwood or Kenny Anderson or Roger Craig if you don't have this. But because of this, now all of a sudden, somebody goes, was Kenny Anderson good?

00:14:39
Speaker 8: Who's Else Greenwood? Well that's finny because nobody really is talking about them. They're just talking about Bill Belichick and like, why who did they let in instead of these guys?

00:14:47
Speaker 2: Yeah? What they let these guys in for. I'm trying to fight the good fight for Kenny Anderson to get in or Else Greenwood or Roger Craig. Yeah, Pully.

00:14:57
Speaker 7: I don't know if the Hall of Fame in the NFL had the work week. I think the NFL media and the people that the NFL media had the rough week. They think it's a bunch of old guy reporters that are upset with Bill Belichick with how they treated him. That's how the casual person think.

00:15:13
Speaker 2: Once again, if you say I didn't vote for him because he's a cheater, Okay? Is Tom Brady a cheater? And are you going to hold him to the same standard, and what about Robert Kraft? And if not, then why as long as you have logic behind this, this is your vote. Great, I'm not voting for Craft, I'm not voting for Brady and not voting for Belichick. I think they cheated. If that's how you feel and you're transparent, I got no argument. It's your opinion, it's your vote. It's not hey, you got to agree with everybody else.

00:15:51
Speaker 4: Yeah, Marvin, is this going away before we go to San Francisco?

00:15:55
Speaker 2: No, because all the media will be in San Francisco and then we're going to bring up Seattle against New England and Malcolm Butler in the rematch, And no, it's not going to go away.

00:16:08
Speaker 9: Yeah.

00:16:09
Speaker 2: Well, that's one of the things that I think.

00:16:10
Speaker 8: The reason that it won't go away is because there isn't necessarily a massive hook to the super Bowl.

00:16:17
Speaker 2: The rematch is cool, but nobody that was.

00:16:20
Speaker 8: There in that first game is still here in this one, so it's not really a rematch.

00:16:24
Speaker 2: Let's I'll take a break. I'm going to talk about the storylines. Sam Darnold's going to join us on the program tomorrow, but and he's the first USC quarterback to play in the Super Bowl about it's crazy. Really yeah, that's crazy. Yeah yeah.

00:16:41
Speaker 7: Paul Sanchez two AFC title.

00:16:43
Speaker 8: Games, Yeah close, yeah yeah, man, Carson Palmer, Nope, never got there.

00:16:48
Speaker 2: No that's a shame. No, No, how about we take a break. We'll get phone calls. Settle on our pole question game of Booty.

00:16:57
Speaker 4: Wow, I was gonna say, Mitch Mustang, but go ahead.

00:17:00

Tried at rkzero proof dot com. I'm demanding that all of these Sports Emmy voters who didn't vote for us must tell us why they didn't vote for us all these years. We may not want to hear what they have to say.

00:18:24
Speaker 8: Yeah, I'd appreciate the clarity. Oh you would transparency, Okay, all right.

00:18:31
Speaker 2: There might be a lot of people who have a lot of opinions why they didn't vote for us.

00:18:35
Speaker 4: Yes, Tom, what if they.

00:18:36
Speaker 5: Singled one of us out and the overwhelming reason was because of a particular daan net and for me, and if there was one change, then you probably would have won.

00:18:44
Speaker 2: Multiple Sports Emmers. Yeah, yeah, I'd rather not know, It's okay, I'd rather have the mystery of why they didn't vote for us. I look at it this way. It's not that they didn't vote for us. They voted for other people who may have had better years. And that's fine. I'm okay with that, Yes, Paul.

00:19:04
Speaker 7: They didn't vote for ust on the first ballot, second ballot, third ballot, fourth ballot.

00:19:09
Speaker 2: I mentioned Sam Darnold on the program tomorrow, and he will be the first USC quarterback to play in a Super Bowl. A couple of people tweeted Pat Hayden would have been the starter in Super Bowl fourteen instead of Vince Farrogamo. But Pat Hayden got injured in the regular season, so he couldn't be the first USC quarterback to play any Super Bowl. All right, well, thank you.

00:19:32
Speaker 6: He fractured a finger in week ten. Did any of the specifics?

00:19:35
Speaker 2: I bet it? Okay, okay, and.

00:19:37
Speaker 6: That's why Fara guy might have come in starting in the middle of the season.

00:19:39
Speaker 2: There, all right, thank you, Todd Seeton. What's pole question today?

00:19:42
Speaker 8: I mean, I think if Carson Palmer didn't get hurt, he might have made it too.

00:19:45
Speaker 2: But didn't really work out that way.

00:19:47
Speaker 4: I guess.

00:19:51
Speaker 2: Have a pole question? Didn't really work out? Yes, that means no, no, no. Do you have a poll question today?

00:19:58
Speaker 9: Yeah?

00:19:59
Speaker 8: You know I'm trying to go off of the Hall of Fame again. We have a couple of questions here, Eli Manning. First ballot Hall of Famer, yes or no? Oh, he can't be right. Second ballot hall of Famer.

00:20:14
Speaker 2: Yeah, sorry, Yeah, I think he eventually gets in. He's not a first ballot Hall of Famer?

00:20:21
Speaker 8: Is he a Hall of Famer? He's he's going to be. Do I think he's Hall of Fame quarterback?

00:20:30
Speaker 4: I do not.

00:20:33
Speaker 2: Keep in mind in one of those Super Bowl years, I think they lost like six of seven, six of eight, and he was going to be benched.

00:20:41
Speaker 8: There was a year that they I think it was the year, the almost perfect season for the Patriots. Tom Coughlin was going to be fired that year and Eli Manning was supposed to be benched about halfway through the season. And that's one of the that's one of the seasons that's going to get him in the Hall of Fame.

00:20:56
Speaker 2: And part of his resume is attached to, hey, he beat Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. Yeah, pauling.

00:21:03
Speaker 7: Eli Manning had two unbelievable months in his career.

00:21:08
Speaker 2: No offense.

00:21:09
Speaker 7: I'm a fan. He was four and zero in the playoffs in two thousand and seven, sixth but touchdowns one pick, twenty eleven nine touchdowns, one pick. He never won a playoff game before before or after those two runs.

00:21:23
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I don't think he is, but he's going to get in. And a large part has to do with he beat like he beat Belichick and he beat Tom Brady. It's not like and he beat Mike Holmgren. Yeah, he beat Belichick and Brady, and you know the cachet that comes along with that. And you know your brother is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time as well. You can't leave that out. Dispute that.

00:21:49
Speaker 7: Yeah, pauling Eli Manning made about three Pro Bowls. He actually made it like he wasn't, you know, alternate fifth alternate. He never led the league in touchdown passes thrice time led the league in interceptions. If you compare his regular season to someone like Russell Wilson's regular season, it's not even close. Like Russell's is way better, but Russell is Eli didn't stick around at the end to play his way out of anything.

00:22:17
Speaker 2: Yeah, well, if Russ wins the other Super Bowl, then it's not even you know, like he went to the Pro Bowl ten times.

00:22:23
Speaker 8: ELI front loaded playing his way out of it. He didn't do it at the end, No fan just joking. That would be Seton who said that. Seton said that, not me. Eli frontloaded him with all those years that he wasn't very good.

00:22:38
Speaker 2: And then, yes, Marvin, do.

00:22:42
Speaker 4: We put too much emphasis on the Hall of Fame or the Super Bowl when it comes to getting into the Hall of Fame? Like that one pass from Russell Wilson to Malcolm Butler changes whether or not Russell Wilson and Richard Sherman and those guys getting to the Hall of Fame or not.

00:22:56
Speaker 2: If David Tyree doesn't come up with that catch, I don't think ELA's getting into the Hall of Fame with one Super Bowl. I don't think so. Yes, at that position we attach a lot more emphasis. We do. If Dan Marino had three Super Bowls, if he won three, he would be probably the second greatest quarterback of all time. But he went to one and he lost to Montana. Yes, we do attach a whole lot more emphasis to that. It's the most important position in all the sports, and even coaches. You know, if you're Tom Flores and you're winning a couple of Super Bowls go into the Hall of Fame.

00:23:41
Speaker 11: You know.

00:23:42
Speaker 2: With coaches it's tricky too. I mean we talked about Don Coriel, Air Coriel and what he did for those great Charger teams, but he wasn't successful in the postseason. I think he won what one hundred and ten games in his career, you know, but here heed something he created, Eric Coriel a system.

00:24:05
Speaker 7: Yeah, Pauline, And that's probably why there's not a bunch of anger today and yesterday around Eli, because, like you said, he's going to get in. He's likable, media friendly, and he'll have his day. So no one's gonna, you know, go crazy this morning.

00:24:18
Speaker 2: But are we asking for accountability with well, why aren't you voting for Eli? You should like we're yes, you should go. Scorts turn sick of this, We're moving out for Bell. Yeah, I don't care why you didn't vote for Belichick. Tell me why you didn't vote for Eli?

00:24:32
Speaker 4: Yes, Morgan, No, if Drew Brees doesn't get in, we'll be asking for accountability.

00:24:36
Speaker 2: Yeah, he's going to get in. Drew Brees will get in, Larry Fitzgerald will get in. Yeah. See, here's a new poll question for you. If you want.

00:24:43
Speaker 8: Okay, the biggest storyline heading into this the Big Game? Okay, a rematch of the Big Game forty nine, Sam Darnold's redemption, the Patriots turn around, other neither neither. What is the main storyline heading into this game? Well, I don't want to read or hear that.

00:25:04
Speaker 2: Oh, it's a rematch redemption for Seattle against New England. Nobody who's playing in this super Bowl was involved in that Super Bowl. I don't think Josh McDaniels maybe, but Cam Chancellor's not playing. Sherman Richard Sherman's not playing. Malcolm Butler is not playing. But we tend to do that man or rematch here. No one's around.

00:25:34
Speaker 7: Yeah, PAULI, this Super Bowl feels like a big movie without stars. Sam Donald not a household name, but a great story. There's also two underdogs in this game. You're not supposed to have two underdogs. The team that won four games last year and then Sam Darnald, the career underdog. And if you look at the last ten years, every super Bowl had a household name, Mahomes, Manning, et cetera, et cetera, Brady, they all had household names.

00:26:00
Speaker 2: Is that long stretch where he either had what mahomes or Brady playing in a Super Bowl. That's star power. You don't have that. But and I'll talk to Sam Darnold about that tomorrow of you know, everybody wants to hear that he, you know, kept receipts and he is journeying. And if I'm Sam, I don't I don't care what happened before. I mean, I gotta live in today. And I don't think Sam Donald plays with a chip on his shoulder. He's pretty even keel, But you know, does he want to shut up everybody? I mean this, this removes the bust label forever. If he would win this Super Bowl, you know, he plays more emphasis on the Jets. Mike Rabel kicked to the curb by Tennessee. I mean, these these are storylines, and you know, this is what NBC is gonna do. You're gonna have to have all your you're filling eight hours pregame. What are the storylines you're gonna tell? You know, Mike Rabel, former Patriot, great Tennessee coach, and here he is going to the Super Bowl with Drake May. Drake May, you know the other quarterbacks who were taken before him, oh, you can't get a quarterback from North Carolina's going to be good and then all of a sudden he's good. Oh. By the way, remember I said yesterday if the Patriots are going to win the Super Bowl, Drake May is going to have to do it with his legs. I really believe.

00:27:26
Speaker 8: So.

00:27:26
Speaker 2: I didn't know what the over under was, and I think Dylan, our resident gambler, said you're over under rushing. Okay, who wants to guess over under rushing total for Drake May? Todd? I'll start with you.

00:27:43
Speaker 6: Twenty six and a half year Marvin.

00:27:46
Speaker 4: Sixty eight and a half yards.

00:27:48
Speaker 2: Satan, I mean, I guess probably something like fifty nine, Pauley thirty eight and a half. Forty and a half, wow, forty in a have there's yards to get. He's gonna have to get him, yes, Todd.

00:28:07
Speaker 5: By the way, the back room guys have been studying tape on sim Donald. No chip has been found on his shoulder. They REWI and they went through every week of the season and the player.

00:28:17
Speaker 2: I think they found a chip in bow Nix's ankle.

00:28:20
Speaker 6: By the way, don't get me started.

00:28:22
Speaker 2: Okay, Oh, brother man, this is this is wild. You had exit interview with Sean Payton and he talked about bo Nix's ankle and then it was kind of a pre existing injury. Marvin, do you have it okay?

00:28:41
Speaker 4: Is there any concern that bo has had several ankle surgeries?

00:28:46
Speaker 12: And what was found though? What was a condition that was like predisposed right at that where they always find a little bit more when they go in, and it wasn't a matter of if, it was a matter of when. So because when you look at the player and you're trying to evaluate it, he said. The doctor operating surgeon said that though this was this was going to happen sooner than later.

00:29:12
Speaker 2: Why are you revealing this? Because as it turned out yesterday, bo Nix was not happy with his head coach.

00:29:21
Speaker 13: Didn't have any predisposed issues, and my uncles were feeling really good. I don't think he really should share how many surgeries I've had in the past, to be honest with you, But because I don't, you know, he doesn't really even know that.

00:29:34
Speaker 2: So that's bo Nicks. Bonix doesn't sound happy already, a pretty tough week for him. But I mean that that's pretty direct to your head coach. Basically, what like, what are you doing? Who does his help? Yes, Todd.

00:29:50
Speaker 6: So we lose the AFC title game at home. So this is where things are right now.

00:29:53
Speaker 5: After this wonderful season and a couple of miscues and bad decisions, we would be in the Super Bowl right now. And now we got to worry about the room relationship between quarterback and coach going into next year.

00:30:03
Speaker 2: Or how healthy is that ankle going to be moving on? And how many surgeries have you had? And this doctor telling is the doctor allowed to tell Sean Payton this? I guess the team doctor can tell the coach. I don't know what laws or rules, what his protocol? Yeah seton?

00:30:23
Speaker 8: What is just like out of like genuine curiosity. What is the problem with saying what Sean Payton said? Well, this might affect bo Nix getting a long term contract. We might look at this and say that he is injuring. You know, go back to Steph Curry. When Steph Curry had his ankle issues, they thought, you know what, he's going to be a role player that they didn't know if he could stay healthy or not. But still that's that's bo Nix's information. That's not Sean Payton's information.

00:30:51
Speaker 2: I think you got to be fair to bo Nicks, and I don't think Sean Payton was because he's.

00:30:57
Speaker 8: Saying they went in there and then found that, oh, this was probably gonna happen sooner or later.

00:31:04
Speaker 2: But bo Nicks should be able to tell that story, not Sean Payton in my opinion, Yeah, Pauli, if you go back.

00:31:11
Speaker 7: To twenty twenty one, it was reported and everyone knew about it. While at Auburn, bo Nicks injured his ankle against Mississippi State. It ended his junior season, and he did have an ankle surgery that was five years ago. I think you're completely right. This is a guy who's not gotten his big payday yet, but he and his agent don't love this storyline.

00:31:28
Speaker 2: All right, we'll take a break. Yeah, Paulie says, this is a movie that's coming up without stars in Super Bowl sixty.

00:31:36
Speaker 8: Yes, So if moving forward with Bownix's contract situation, he had ankle surgery when he was in college, and he had ankle surgery now.

00:31:47
Speaker 2: But they said this was going to happen, It wasn't and it did if but it it did, but it's still bo Nix's information. I don't think that should be on Sean to be telling people. I just thought that that that I don't think he's had a good week. No he's not had a good week. No, he's had worse moments though, this guy. I was also wondering if in some way he was he's the only one who had a worse week than Belichick. I think, yes.

00:32:15
Speaker 5: I was wondering if coach Payton was somehow protecting himself a little bit. As I was watching the Bills game, there was a number of designed runs.

00:32:21
Speaker 6: I felt like early on they were running him too much.

00:32:23
Speaker 5: He wasn't running because he was trying to get away from a sack. He was running in plays that they called and did he run him one too many times and he got hurt. And I was kind of protecting that decision a little bit that he, you know, instigated an injurious I hear him feels guilty about it.

00:32:35
Speaker 2: I don't know, now, you tad coach, Did you call him coach Peyton? I did, Yeah, you did.

00:32:41
Speaker 6: We're not that close. I can call him Sewan just yet.

00:32:43
Speaker 2: No, all right, take a break play the day next.

00:33:56
Speaker 4: Correct and named Jalen Thompson Jalen to Jalen Tyson makes his way over to the interview.

00:34:01
Speaker 14: Okay, obviously there's a different energy in this building when the James families here. We saw how the fans reacted to Bronni and certainly this could be potentially Lebron's last game in this building. How would you characterize his impact on this city and franchise.

00:34:16
Speaker 4: Well, you could say.

00:34:17
Speaker 15: Something, there's a Donald Mitchell city.

00:34:19
Speaker 6: Now there's Donald Mitchell CeON now where he.

00:34:21
Speaker 1: Come back here. We're gonna make sure that everybody rose for him.

00:34:23
Speaker 4: Like that they did for him.

00:34:24
Speaker 2: But this is something, this is city.

00:34:26
Speaker 14: Yes, Sir, Jalen Donovan, you have any thoughts.

00:34:28
Speaker 5: On both, as much as I appreciate that, you know, at the end of the day, he's laid the foundation, right, you know, obviously you want to replicate that.

00:34:36
Speaker 2: Okay, it's a Jalen Jalen Tyson who's twenty three years of age. You know, maybe he's not old enough to remember what Lebron meant to the city of Cleveland. And then Jalen Tyson, the Cabs guard, later apologized for his comments right after the game.

00:34:54
Speaker 15: There was no disrespect there. I didn't want to dispeg or step on the buy his tolls like as one of the greatest players ever played a game. Obviously, I was a cas fan growing up because of him, Right, I didn't want to take away him, but I just wanted to get down his flowers. That was my biggest goal in it.

00:35:09
Speaker 4: And if I.

00:35:10
Speaker 15: Offended anybody or anybody got mad about it, I'm sorry. I take your personal responsibility, but I just want to give the managed flowers because we want to do the same thing that Bond and them did here.

00:35:19
Speaker 2: We want to do that with him as our as our leader.

00:35:24
Speaker 8: Back back back back back back, all right, and you're gonna stick up for your guy. It was just awkward the way you were sticking up for him to say, it's you know, Donovan Mitchell City, Uh, it's not still Lebron's And even Charles Barkley and Shacking Company, they were chopping it up last night of if Lebron leaves the Lakers, going back to Cleveland would probably be that final year, you know, you'd bookend your career. So they were talking about it and you know, everybody showed up from the Lebron James's family.

00:35:59
Speaker 2: It was a big night. But going in as a Laker, maybe the next time he'll be at Cleveland Cavalier. Yeah pulling.

00:36:06
Speaker 7: Jalen Tyson twenty three years old born December second, two thousand and two. On that date, Lebron James was making his debut of his last year of high school. It was his first game of his last year of high school.

00:36:19
Speaker 2: A couple of phone calls in here Chris and Syracuse leads us off. Hi Chris Barkley will join us later on the final hour of the show. Hi Chris, Hey, Thanks Dan Hey.

00:36:27
Speaker 16: I have a comment and a quick stroll down Dan Patrick's show Memory Lane. He recent prop betting scandals has brought in a question the integrity of games, so cheating has kind of been a hot topic. So I think the timing of Belichick's candidacy may have worked against him a little. And yesterday Hudson called in again. He reminds me of Jake in la from many years ago. And Dan, remember when you called Jake out on a take that he had. In his response to you was I'm just giving my opinion, like I'm supposed.

00:36:58
Speaker 9: To a poor little guy.

00:37:01
Speaker 2: It still haunts me what I did to Jake in La.

00:37:05
Speaker 15: Ah.

00:37:07
Speaker 2: It's like, Jake, You're better than this. I'm just trying to give it. And then you run into Jake. Now he's like twenty four, twenty five years of age and graduated from Syracuse. Uh in the sports world, is he working for the Pelicans?

00:37:25
Speaker 6: He is working with the Pelicans. My son was in some of his classes at Syracuse.

00:37:28
Speaker 4: Thank you.

00:37:29
Speaker 8: He he's the CFO at this surprised he's got a five percent stake at this point.

00:37:34
Speaker 2: Well, I saw Jake in LA at the Super Bowl New Orleans and he's about six or four, you know, handsome kid coming up, mister Patrick. I go, hey, he goes Jake in LA and I said the oracle. Yes, Paulie.

00:37:49
Speaker 7: It's too bad we don't have the audio of that incident.

00:37:51
Speaker 4: Wait, wait, we do.

00:37:53
Speaker 12: I think the Celtics could really be the year.

00:37:57
Speaker 2: I mean they just look like I'm not Wait wait, Jake, don't overreact like this. You're You're better than that, right, I know I'm kidding. Oh no, no, no, I take I'm kidding with you. Okay, you know I love you.

00:38:13
Speaker 4: Right?

00:38:15
Speaker 2: That was painful. It's still painful. Hey, Dan, you big bully like Steven A. Smith.

00:38:22
Speaker 8: Yeah, you're better than that.

00:38:27
Speaker 2: The colonel in Tampa, Hey, colonel.

00:38:31
Speaker 11: Hey damn, hey, guys, how are we doing? So let's look at the Stope Belichick thing. You know, I guess I missed that. Is there a morals character clause in the induction? You know, by laws of the Hall of Fame. No, there is and character counts. Dan, character counts, then who are the voting members that are you know, qualified to be the character moral.

00:38:55
Speaker 2: I don't think there is a moral compass that you have with your voting. It's your own moral compass. And whether they keep Michael Irvan out for a couple of years or they did that the terall Owens and they're doing that to Belichick, and you have your it's your vote, it's your opinion. All I want is just tell me why you came to this conclusion. That's all. Clyde in North Carolina. Hi, Clyde, hy Dan, How are you great, Clyde.

00:39:26
Speaker 9: I've got a couple of comments and a question. My comments are I really appreciate your experience based advice you give to young parents, and I think you're the best interviewer I have ever heard.

00:39:40
Speaker 2: Thank you, Clyde.

00:39:42
Speaker 9: And my question, I just heard you a few minutes ago say Bill Belichick would never coach again. I guess I felt the same. But after hearing Tom Brady's just glowing recommendation, do you think there would possibly be a chance since Tom Brady's on board with the writers that Belichick could be a Writers coach one day.

00:40:05
Speaker 2: I mean, it feels like Tom would already have asked, right, they still don't have a coach, I said, after listening to the NFC title game. As much as you know, Tom Brady was talking about Clint Kubiak an awful lot, and it feels like Clint Kubiak probably is going to be the raiders next head coach. I mean, Bill is turning seventy four, that's a young team. The Falcons passed on him. I thought that he was going to go to the Falcons, and as soon as they turned him down, I said, he will not coach in the NFL again. And I firmly believe that, Yes, Mark.

00:40:44
Speaker 4: They just fired an older coach. They're going to try to hire another one.

00:40:47
Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, Belichick's younger than Pete Carroll, I believe, isn't he by a like a month or so. Mike Floria will have more on the Belichick situation. Charles Barkley will stop by as well. One Hour in the Books on this Thursday with Fritzie Seat and Marv Paula, Yours truly and the back room guys. We're back after this Dan Patrick's show
