Creating a lead magnet that actually brings in leads shouldn’t feel like a guessing game. If you’ve poured time into designing a freebie only to watch it flop, chances are the missing piece is strategy. Many entrepreneurs in the service-based business space struggle to connect the dots between a great idea and real lead generation.
In this episode, you’ll get a clear path to creating digital downloads that work as more than just freebies, they become a powerful step in your online marketing plan. You’ll learn how to choose one urgent problem to solve, why simplicity leads to more audience engagement, and how to set up a call to action that guides people naturally toward your offer.
We’re talking real strategies that fit your goals for business growth and don’t overwhelm your audience. You’ll hear how to design a lead magnet that meets people at the top of funnel, gives them a quick win, and sets the stage for meaningful client connection.
You’ll also learn how to craft a simple email sequence that keeps the momentum going, while your content strategy leads them to your offer with confidence and clarity. These are the same steps I’ve used inside our small business marketing agency to turn passive followers into paying clients using content that converts.
Let’s simplify your freebie, sharpen your focus, and start building something that actually works.

Just like when you meet someone for the first time, whether it's a romantic interest or just kind of striking up a conversation with someone that may end up becoming your friend, you don't want to dump on them all so much at once, right? So if that helps you visualize, like, what is a good way to start with a freebie, just think about a first conversation that you had with a loved one, that you had with your partner, that you had with a friend, right? So the key in business when you have that first handshake or that first combo is to solve one problem, and I have to tell you, it has to be an urgent problem. Tired of showing up online, posting your heart out and still hearing crickets. Are you doing all the right things but wondering why your content isn't converting? Your DMs are dry and your audience isn't buying? You're not alone, and this podcast is exactly for you. Welcome to Social Media Marketing for Small Businesses where strategy meets soul and connection. Well, that's the secret sauce. Hi. I'm Cheyanne Cleyman, a wife, proud mama of three, former actress and fitness trainer turned serial entrepreneur and online relationship expert. Over the last decade, I've built my own brands, helped dozens of others grow theirs, and discovered one powerful truth: connection is the real currency. If you're a service-based business or high-ticket brand that wants more leads, trust, and sales from social media without the burnout or fake hype, you're in the right place. Each week, I'm bringing you short, powerful, and packed episodes that feel like a coffee date with a best friend and biz coach all in one. Let's turn your followers into clients and content into connection. This is Social Media Marketing for Small Businesses, and it's about to change how you show up online. Let's dive in, boss. So we're about to have a little fun with this one. Today, I want you to raise your hand if you've ever poured hours into creating a freebie, and then all you get is actually cue the crickets. Right? I mean, maybe it's a few downloads, but nothing actually came of it. Or maybe people did download it, but then nothing. Or is that just me, like you can just get past this episode now? No, right? The fact that you clicked on this episode probably shows that you have created a freebie with no replies, no sales, and no engagement. And this is my full permission slip to tell you it's okay to have been there, because you're not alone. Most lead magnets fail because they're either one or the other. They're either way too fluffy, so no really good practical value, or on the other side, they're way too pushy, or too much information, or only a condensed version of the person's sales page. So today I'm going to show you how to cut through the fluff. I'm going to show you how to create a lead magnet that your audience actually wants. And ultimately, what it is all about at the end of the day is one that leads them naturally into becoming a client. So if you've leaned in just a little bit, this is the time that if you're a note-taker, bust out that pen and paper, if you're old school, or if you want to just open up the notes section on your phone, go ahead and do so, because we're about to get real. Let's dig it. So one of the biggest mistakes I see is that lead magnets, they try to solve everything at once, right? I'm talking like the 40-page ebook, the giant workbook, or the 40 different videos, you know, mini master class. And the problem is just that no one ends up finishing it. And the struggle there is that you may give someone so much value, but if they're not ready to receive that right then and there, then they're just not going to actually get the value that you're giving. Now, I've been an entrepreneur for most my life, but specifically like an online, active entrepreneur for at least the past ten years, and I've invested in some business coaching and mentoring, and some of it good, not all of it great. But I'll tell you, just like with anything in life, and maybe even this podcast, right, you take something from each experience. And something I've taken away from some of my business coaches is that you want to make sure when your ideal audience first comes into, we'll call it a funnel, right, when they meet you, top of funnel. Basically, imagine it if you're a visual person like me: it's kind of like if your business was a brick-and-mortar, your front door or that first handshake is the top of funnel, right? And so often we want to serve people, right? We want to help people, especially if you're a service-based business owner, so if you're a consultant, if you're a realtor, if you're a coach, if you are a transformation specialist or a therapist, right? You're in the business that you're doing because you're passionate about it. But when you're meeting people, if you try to give them too much in the beginning before they even have learned to trust you, it's probably going to go in one ear and out the other. I so often on my podcast relate business to relationship. I really feel like this is like 46 episodes in, 47 episodes, and I feel a little bit like a relationship coach. So whether you apply this to your personal life or business, that's your choice. But I really feel like it can go both ways. It's just like when you meet someone for the first time, whether it's a romantic interest or just kind of striking up a conversation with someone that may end up becoming your friend, you don't want to dump on them all so much at once, right? So if that helps you visualize, like, what is a good way to start with a freebie, just think about a first conversation that you had with a loved one, that you had with your partner, that you had with a friend, right? So the key in business when you have that first handshake or that first combo is to solve one problem, and I have to tell you, it has to be an urgent problem, right? Or either someone's not going to click and download or they're just not going to use it. If it's not urgent enough, chances are your freebie is just going to sit in their inbox and it's just going to become another email that they delete at the end of the day. So it's very important to choose one problem, but then make sure it's hurting them enough. Make sure you've helped fix the urgent problem first. You want to give your audience a quick win, so something that's helpful and that they immediately think, "Okay, wait a second. If her free stuff is this good, imagine what her paid offer is like." So I'm talking, you know, making it real practical. It can be something like a checklist, a five-minute video (yes, not 50, not 15, a five-minute video), or say, think a one-page cheat sheet. Something that's small but mighty. Something that I know—I'm going to add a little caveat here—something I know that is hard for us as entrepreneurs: when we get into the space of opening up a business and taking something that's whether our skillset, something we've studied, or something we've gone through, right, our own transformational journey, we often don't realize how basic and simple it was for us that we needed help in the beginning, right? So something like a checklist is super valuable for people who have no idea where to start. Say you're somebody who helps, you have a business where you help people organize their life or systemize their business or their family routine, right? A checklist may feel like, "well, that's not really serving them. They need so much more." But if you're someone in the midst of the chaos of not having any strategy or systems whatsoever in your house or your business, a checklist can really just help center you and give you that momentum that you need. Say you're a fitness instructor or a holistic dietitian. I may be just name-dropping some of the professions that our clients do, but imagine like giving someone a one-page cheat sheet of like, "Hey, these ten things never put in your grocery cart," or "Always make sure you put these ten things in your grocery cart." You're not solving their entire problem. You're not solving their gut issues. You're not teaching them all the things they need to know to lose the 40 pounds that they want to lose, but that's okay. You're getting them started on their journey. So ultimately, you want to think more small but mighty. Now the next step is say already you've got some ideas from this first little segment that I talked about, right? So maybe you've jotted down some ideas. I really encourage you when you listen to my episodes, please push the pause button. Or if you have an entrepreneur friend, or if you're like me, you are a couple-preneur, and you run a business with your spouse, like, take the time to chat these things through. You know, I am not about making podcasts that you just power through. You get to the end, and then you just feel empty, and you're like, "Well, what do I do with this information?" or "What was that she said again?" So use the power of the pause button and take a moment, sometimes just to reflect on some of the things that I'm sharing. And of course, I really love to make this a conversation. And so you may not be in my room right now, but I would love for you to jump in my DMs or my emails and let me know, like if you figure out ideas, or you're struggling to figure out ideas of how to make this actual practical for you. I would love to hear from you, and you can find information on how to contact me in the show notes below. But so now that we have that understanding of what a freebie should be, I want to make sure that we break it down and we make it practical and not preachy, right? So, I mean, no one wants another long PDF that's just going to gather dust on their desktop, or, you know, going to end up in their trash bin. Your lead magnet should feel like a tool they can actually use. So that's why something like checklists or templates or trackers or even some short videos, convert so much better overall, because the moment your email hits their inbox, if they can click it and they can get, boom, some great immediate value, especially something they don't have to flip through, or they don't need to literally put an appointment on their calendar just to listen to what you've sent them, that is what is going to convert better. They're digestible in that way, right? They give people a result in a few minutes, not days, not weeks. So the easier your content is, your value is, to consume, the more likely it is to convert, even if it just means converting a follower at that point, meaning someone who's buying into what you're doing. You don't want someone to immediately put you off their email list, or just push you to the side, or, maybe worse, go look for the answers that they're looking for with a competitor, because you tried to throw too much at them too soon. So you've got an idea maybe rolling around in your head. You now like are starting to get some words to it, that you're realizing you don't want to be so preachy. What I will say, though, is another mistake I often see people make, and I saw myself make for a very long time, is not connecting your freebie to your paid offer, right? People need some help sometimes. I mean, we are all so inundated with so many messages all the time. We really need to spell it out and kind of be told what to do, not in a bad way, but you've heard this in a way better, nicer way, as in a CTA, a call to action, right? So ultimately, a lead magnet that doesn't point anywhere ultimately becomes just content, right? Like, that's ultimately what it is. It's just like, content on social. You know, my husband and I, when we've had our own social media agency, we used to talk with our clients all the time when we would discuss strategy and discuss, like, how can we plan out these great strategies that are going to lead people to becoming basically, your clients? Is that you need something that converts, and you need content that's going to point them somewhere. So you want to make sure your lead magnet does the same thing, and then it points directly to your offer. So I'm going to throw out an example for you so you can actually see this. One of our clients, as I mentioned, we have a nutritionist that is one of our clients, and so for her, it's like, okay, if she's giving away a checklist on Instagram content ideas, right, like for nutrition, it should naturally flow into your paid content calendar service, right? So for a dietitian, if she's offering, say, free top five nutrition swaps guide, it should naturally lead into her meal plan or her coaching, right? And so meaning you can in your email delivery when you deliver these nutrition swaps, or if it is on content, ultimately, your content should always lead to a freebie, something downloadable, something someone can take home with them in your email inbox, and then in that email, or hopefully an email sequence that you would create, that's where you would lead people and let them know, kind of like, "Hey, and where this was great, you, if you loved this, you're going to love my meal plan even more. Or if you need even more hands-on, high-touch help, hey, I also do this monthly coaching," yadda yadda yadda. So basically, you want to look at this as like the bridge between your freebie and your offer should feel very obvious, but not forced, right? So that's why it's great to do so in the email sequence, because by that point, they've already given you their email and they're already trusting you and saying, "Yes, I want more value from you." And this is exactly how my team and I actually designed our freebies. We have one that maybe that's how you found our podcast. You know, we have one that's called Five Quiet Reasons Your Content Isn't Converting. And we also recently debuted our lead tracker that we use to track clients and ideal clients for our own customers, and we are giving it to you and anyone who listens to this podcast for free. So we know how much value these things have, and they are also short. They're practical, they're actionable, and they directly connect to what we do and how we help clients do inside of Kuleana Connect, right? So for example, our lead tracker is how we track leads and we find leads for our clients, right? So it lists out their name, where we found them, the post that we found them on. So it's so easy for our clients to jump in, join the conversation and follow up with their leads. Now it naturally points to our services, because what are our services? Well, hey, we can give you this lead tracker, and you can invest your own time and energy trying to find your ideal leads online and track them here. Or we can do this for you, and you can just get this lead tracker completely filled out by us every week in our team. And all you've got to do is just start talking with these warm leads that we've already warmed up for you. Do so see how it's something that's free and very valuable. Because if you're trying to track leads online, it can get really overwhelming trying to figure out, "Who did I talk to here? When? What were their kids' names? What was their challenge they were trying to figure out?" Our lead tracker, boom, helps organize it for you. But if you want that next step of freeing up your time and energy, and again, allowing someone else to take care of that for you, then boom, that's how it naturally connects to what we do with our monthly clients. So if you're interested in either one of our freebies, you can go ahead and grab both in the show notes below and use them as an inspiration to design your own highly converting lead magnet. And again, like I said, my contact information is also in the show notes, and I respond to every DM. I respond to every email personally. And I really, really want to hear how I can help you move your business forward. So here we go. If you've been listening to my podcast for some time, you know that at the end of every episode, I always leave you with an action step. Okay, that's very important to me, and I want to make sure you guys get value from every episode, and that I want to make sure you guys move your business forward when listening to this podcast. So this week's Action Step is to look at your current freebie or sketch out a new one. So again, look at your current one, even if it hasn't had a download in weeks, or sketch out a new one from all the tips and tricks that I share with you above. But then, no matter which one you choose, ask yourself two questions: Does this solve one, uno, urgent problem, quickly? That's your first question. Does this solve one urgent problem quickly? Does it naturally lead into my paid offer? It's very simple. If the answer is no, it's time for a revamp, right? And if the answer is yes, and you're still not getting downloads, hey, let's strategize, because maybe there's something I could see that could help point you in the right direction. You ultimately want to just make sure that you start small, make it practical and make sure it points to where you want people to go next. And where I want you to go next? Well, I would love it if you would bless me and my team and leave me a quick review about what you feel about this podcast. I read every review, and it really helps boost this podcast up so more people, more small business owners and entrepreneurs like yourself can get these tactical, tangible help and steps to move their business forward. Until the next episode. I so look forward to connecting with each and every one of you. Go out there. Go ahead, bust out those freebies today. Sketch a new one, and know that you are one step closer to making your business dreams come true. Good connecting with you, boss, and I'll see you on the next episode of Social Media Marketing for Small Businesses. This is Cheyanne Cleyman. Have a blessed day. All right, my friend, that's it for today. But let me leave you with this. If your content's not converting, it's not your fault. Chances are you've been taught to prioritize the algorithm instead of the actual humans reading your words. And that ends right here. Go ahead and grab my free guide, Five Quiet Reasons Your Content Isn't Converting, and what to do instead. It's packed with real talk, practical shifts, and quick, immediate wins. Link is in the show notes below. And if you're ready to stop guessing and start connecting with ideal clients who actually buy from you, book a free connection call with our team at Kuleana Connect. We don't do content. We do connection that converts. Because at the end of the day, it's not about going viral, it's about being valuable. Thanks for hanging out with me again. I'm Cheyanne Cleyman, and I'll see you on next week's episode. See you later, boss.
