Speaker 1: At some point Nick Shook, this went from a game that I thought Jackson Dart had taken a really good step forward to a game where Jackson Dart is gonna get Jeremy Lynn levels of hype over the next ten days. And he might because that performance really was incredible by the young Giants quarterback.

Speaker 5: You know, we talked about this before the season that Russell Wilson was going to lose his job with Jackson Dart, the riding was on the wall, and we saw why in the preseason and even in his first game with the Giants. He led them to a victory, but it wasn't overly impressive. He had a nightmarish game in New Orleans last week. This is the exact opposite. He did everything that makes him special and makes him a great fit for Brian Dable as he's trying to save his job. He scrambled, he threw a number of dimes, He passed confidently all night. He shook off a trip to the blue tent in which Brian Dable was in rage that it wasn't moving quickly enough, and came back and helped them finish this game. I'm not going to go so far as to say that the Giants at their franchise quarterback, but they should feel very very good about what they saw from Jackson Dart tonight, a huge step forward and leading them to an upset victory.

Speaker 1: Well, they certainly believe they have their franchise quarterback, that is for sure, and it is a game that was good enough to change the expectations I believe for Dart for this giant season, not like they're going to the playoffs or anything like that, but it was special because of everything that you said in terms of what he added to the running game, and that it's not just him running thirteen times for fifty eight yards in a key early touchdown where he saved what looked like a dead play, but it's Cam Skataboo going nineteen for ninety eight on the ground like just an electric player to watch run through the face of these Philadelphia Eagles on the way to three touchdowns, and the way that those two have just energized an entire team with a big time assist from Andrew Thomas, an All Pro left tackle who returned a few weeks ago and gets better and better every week. But the reason why for me it changes the expectations shook is the diversity of what Dart did. You mentioned in the first two games. I thought, yeah, he looked like a rookie, like he's had some fun moments and everything.

Speaker 1: The scrambles that he had were electric, but some of the touch passes that he had three of his best throws I actually wrote down, I thought were not complete. There was the seambal, the Theo Johnson that he couldn't haul in. There was a really nice touch pass on the goal line to Little Jordan Humphrey that he couldn't finish the play. And then he had a great throw in the red zone that was called pass interference late that set up the third Cam Skataboo touchdown. And between those throws and the shots down the field, he's gonna give his guys chances, and he doesn't have a great receiver group right now. There was no Darius Slayton tonight, so they're one and two wide receivers were Wandale Robinson and Little Jordan Humphrey and Jalen Hyatt was out there making a key third down catch. Between that and the ability to just make something happen with his legs, that's enough to build an offense around. And you can see how excited Dabel is to build that offense.

Speaker 5: Yeah, and you can see how frantic he was when Dart was there was a chance of Dart not coming back in the game. Like I tweeted it, it was like Davie would rather walk barefoot over broken glass than play one more series with Russell Wilson because he knows that the difference is just so significant and guy, and yes he did, Yes, he yelled at the guy in the in the suit or in the sport code.

Speaker 5: We can probably get the details on that later, but it just goes to show how much he believes in Jackson Dart and the beauty of Jackson Dart and why he fits with New York so well is because he made those throws that you just listed with no fear, with complete confidence, and that's the quarterback he's been throughout the course of most of his collegiate career. Now that rubbed some people the wrong way, as if he was overly confident, but it works perfectly in New York, where you have to be built to deal with the scrutiny of the New York media and also the fact that you're playing for the giants who haven't taste success in forever.

But Zach Bond's had a couple rough games. And we're gonna get to the Eagles side of this, because if you thought the Eagles fans were panicking at four and oh, and then panicking a little more at four and one, the sky is going to be falling tonight in Philadelphia as the Phillies fly back to the East Coast and our producer Chris Babona and Eric Roberts and heck me, the Dodger faithful celebrate a bizarre, lucky win for the baseball team. We're also, by the way, going to have Jon Robinson on the show. Oh, by the way, Big Time Show. But first we're going to talk about this game. We have an interview with Bajon coming up a little later. So that touchdown drive was part of a couple sequences Nick that I thought were really good by the offense. Responding Eagles have a great opening drive where Saquon Barkley rips off his longest run of the year, on the very first play eighteen yards thirteen yards the next play for Saquon Barkley and you're thinking, oh, it's gonna be one of those nights. But Jalen Hurts makes a bad decision on an RPO where he keeps the ball lose a few yards. They end up settling for three and the Giants go down the field on that first touchdown drive. They build what was a thirteen to three lead to start the game, and you're thinking, okay, it's off and running. Meanwhile, Eagles offense, like they have all year, had one great half of football in him and that half was the first half. They respond, they get a couple touchdowns. Back, let's actually listen to one of the most comical seasquences of the year. The Eagles have a third and like a long two maybe even three inside the five, they decide to go for the tush push there get it close. It was a two play to tushbush sequence to get the first down, Like that was the plan. They got the first down, and then they just ran it two more times for their touchdown as in line.

Speaker 1: Haven't heard from him all year on Westwood One with Devon mccorty. Was listening to that on my way back. Actually, Shuk, I didn't know that it was Devon. I thought it was Jason mccordy. Sometimes it's tough to tell. At that point, you know they established the Hertz played. I thought a near perfect first half until the last sequence. We'll get to that, but looked great. I think in the first half of this game, and the Eagles storm back and you think, Okay, the better team now has the lead. Like I just figured they're going to take over the game. That is not what happened. And I thought the next drive from the Giants was really telling in important in this game.

Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely, And the way that they capped it, I mean a fifteen play, sixty seven yard march finished off with camp Scadbu's first of three touchdown runs. And I think that that is when the game shifted because you know, the Eagles, they probably encountered a lot of teams over the last year or so in the run of success that would kind of get tired and kind of wilt in the face of, you know, constant pressure from these this Eagles offense, like, oh, every time we find success, suddenly you're just gonna match us.

Speaker 5: They did not blink in the face of adversity against the Eagles tonight, and that drive right there capital I mean, it basically captured their mindset going into this entire game, which is that we're going to fight four quarters. Turns out they only needed like three quarters to fight because.

Speaker 5: It was the Eagles who decided we're gonna pack it up and go home tonight and figure things out because like you said, they put together one good half, they didn't put together two good halves.

And that drive that you mentioned, the fifteen play drive ends with a minute in nineteen seconds on the clock, and I was I was looking back, like for some key plays in that drive, but it it was actually just four plays at a time, like a third and four to Higatt, but he's wide open on the sideline for a first down. It's skataboo picking up chunks. It was just a very workman like drive the Eagles for me, and pass rush tonight was absent, and it really is striking to me to think a little big picture before we get back into the game flow that so much focus has been on aj Brown and Jalen Hurts and it got quiet in the second half of this game again, but I think Jalen Hurts in the passing game on some level is it's pretty similar to where it was on average in the regular season last year. Like it's not a top ten group. It wasn't last year either, but it's not a bottom ten group either. It's efficient enough, it's in the middle. What's different Nick to me is there's no four man pass rush that's consistent, and there was no Jalen Carter tonight. We should point out he was inactive for the game. There's no Landon Dickerson either, so that's important for the Eagles. But there's no foreman pass rush like they've always had, and there's not a good running game and Saquon after that opening spurt was shut down and it's like, that's what's different about these Eagles, and that's what's been good about the Eagles for a decade, and that's really not there for them right now.

Speaker 5: Yeah, and you're kind of teeing me up to get bashed by Eagles fans who've been in my mentions for a year saying I've ranked Jalen Hurts too low in the QB indext But that's fine because what really matters more than anything is that it starts in the trenches, Like you know where I'm gonna go with this, and tonight proved it. I mean, you lose Jalen Carter, he's not able to play. That's your most important defensive interior player. He's he's a game wrecking type of player. You take him out, all you have left there is Jordan Davis. I felt like I was watching a cast of anonymous rushers on the front four for the Eagles, like the teeth had been taken from their defense. Not to mention they lost Quiny and Mitchell during this game, They're already down, like their cornerback situation is rough. At one point, it's keiey Ringo and a Dori Jackson out there, which both of them are a liability, so their defense is banged up, like they're missing key contributors on that side of the ball, and that's why they couldn't get stopped and why they gave up thirty four points to the Giants. But also on the offensive side, just like you said, there's no running game. There's been no running game all year, and you come to learn how valuable a player like Landon Dickerson is to this group. But that alone is not enough for me, because like losing one lineman can hurt any team, especially a player of Dickerson's caliber.

Speaker 5: And obviously the easy conclusion is all the passing games, you know, disjointed. They're stuck in a run. Well, yeah, because that's all they can do. Like, we go back to the Rams game, they couldn't stop a nosebleed in the first half. They had to air it out, and luckily they did enough to come back and beat the Rams with a couple of block fielgals as well. But like, this has been a concerning sign for now three games, and I don't know if it gets any better anytime soon.

Speaker 1: No, because Dickerson needs to get healthy. There are a couple of weeks away from their bye week. Their schedule is very interesting by the way. They go at Minnesota next week and then they have the Giants again at home. I hate when teams play twice in three weeks, yep, especially if it's late in the year. There is something about this particular situation that we're going to get a replay of this game in two weeks that I do find interesting because you better win that game, Philadelphia. You get swept by the Giants at home, losing twice in three weeks, that that puts the stakes at.

Speaker 1: But I think it was really well said about the line. They just can't run block this year, and three interior guys. It's Steen, it's Jurgens, and it's Dickerson when he's out there. And then you know the group they had today just wasn't good enough because you know who also didn't really get much pressure today like the Giants. The Eagles offensive line played great. And that's I mean in terms of pass protection, that's where maybe you can criticize Hurts and Patulo because Jalen hurts his time to throw. I'm so glad to four to three tonight, at least when I last checked, I don't know if that was the final.

And early in this game it was where they were running they ran a Mills concept where he waited for the drag, the crosser on the drag to get open.

Speaker 5: He waited again and kind of improvised found another guy wide open at the sticks for a first down. It was fine, But in the second half, once the Giants really gained the lead Number one built a ten point lead, they didn't have to play against the run.

Speaker 5: At that point, there was nowhere for Hurts to go, and it just undercut this entire offense, which kind of typifies where this entire unit has.

Yeah, at one point he's totally unaware of the clock, trying to get the last playoff. He's like jumping back into shotgun. He is not good in the two minute drill. I feel like I'm comfortable in saying that that's the weakest part of his game. He's really bad at the clock management. Part of it, and that's that could be blamed on coaching a little bit. I kind of blame that more on Jalen Hurts, so he's bad at that, and then there's been a player two each week where you're just man that would have changed the game. And that play tonight was when DeVante Smith beat Yeah, was it flat?

Speaker 1: By about eight yards. I mean, you cannot be more open. Hurts is on his own goal line. When he throws that ball, it's his best throw. Usually he misses it by so much and if he hits DeVante Smith there, I think it's like a ninety six yard touchdown. Instead, they punted away to the Giants who are on a short field and then they end up taking a big lead.

Speaker 5: Yeah, it was a game changing myths. But you know, I when I watched him, I'm watching on prime visions. You're getting that behind the line, you know, film angle, and you can see what Jalen was trying to do. Like, I don't blame this entirely on him. He just sent it too deep, but like there's a safety there, and the way that DeVante Smith was running that route, he had to throw it away from the safety. So he tries to put it over his outside shoulder and it kind of gets devanted, like like turned around, and he kind of can't track the ball.

And then the other one that I hate to bring up because I hate to be the guy who sits back and just looks at when guys are open in certain spots in film. But I watched this live and I thought, oh, it worked, and he didn't go to the guy that I thought he was going to go.

Speaker 5: Jalen's dropping back and he's eyeing his outside target the entire time out of the corner of his eye, waiting for him to break sleek and throw it. First off, he puts the ball on the wrong side of his receiver. He leaves it too far inside, which is why Flatt was able to jump the route. Secondly, they run this concept where they run Godard up to about the sticks and he sits down and it brings the safety down and AJ Brown's running a crosser right behind him and he's open, And I'm like, man, Jalen, if you didn't decide so quickly that you were going to throw the out as if you're trying to make the safe play, you had a touchdown there.

Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, it's tough to kill a guy for his first interception and three hundred regular season snaps or whatever the crazy stat was, But tonight that interception killed their chances, killed the game. It was a bad throw, it was a bad decision. It was a great play by Flott who won that battle in training camp, so that helped put the game away. But we were talking about that sequence, you know, when the Eagles are punting out of their own end zone and it sets up what is really the touchdown that made me think, oh wow, I guess the Giants might just win this game. And this was I believe on a drive where again third down Dart was absolute money. The variety of the throws that he had were really impressive to me tonight. But he had a nice, you know, quick like slant up the seam on that drive on the third down that kept it going. There was a lot of like just little plays by Dart. There was the one that he just scrambled forever before making a play to the Wandel Robinson long long touchdown. There was another you know scramble where he avoids having a big negative and he just gets a couple of yards in the play. He keeps them in a good down and distance. But let's actually go back and listen to the second cam Skataboo touchdown that really started to put this game.

But I'm just looking all the Eagles players in the field that there were multiple times tonight speaking to their how thin they are defensively right now where I'm like, who is ninety five, who's ninety four? I even had a double check what number a door Jackson was wearing there, like that's not a play that Eagles teams of the past get bullied in on the goal line, Like Scataboo is an absolute rhino of a running back, like he's Peyton Hillis blended with a more athletic and quicker running back, Like that's who if.

Like that speaks to the fact that Jalen Carter's not out there and just some of the concerns I have with their defensive personnel overall right now. But that's not to take anything away from the Giants. Like the Giants earned this victory. It was a victory built on desire, passion, and love for the game, as exemplified by their quarterback.

Well, I think there are some real personnel takeaways for the Eagles. So you mentioned adri Jackson's weak tackle attempt on the goal line. There was also kiey ring kiey Ringo not only giving up a you know, thirty four yard passed to little Jordan Humphrey on that first touchdown drive where he kind of mossed him, but giving up a longer pass to Wandel Robinson later in that drive where then he just doesn't have any effort and he doesn't touch him down. He just he just watches him and Wandale then gets up and runs for another seventy yards. And even in that moment, like he didn't even be like, oh why did I do that? I just was watching him. He just he just kind of watched it. And the touchdown to Wandell Robinson where Jackson Dart scrambles around and just kind of makes a play. Makuba comes in and just kind of flies after him.

And what I mean by that is we started the recap show last week talking about like all these one in four teams or even a couple of two and three teams that feel a little dead, that if you got them in primetime, it's gonna be less exciting. You know, when we're previewing their games, it doesn't feel like a good game just because they're involved. And you know what, with the Giants, even if they lose next week in Denver, which you know that's a very tough game, and they go to two and five, they're just alive. They're just gonna be more interesting to watch. Between Dart Skataboo and the pass rushers they have who even tonight they didn't even have a good night. They didn't even a great night, but they didn't they didn't need to. Maybe maybe the strategy was to contain Hurts as a runner, and they did it. Burns did have a couple sacks. I'm just glad they're back in the mix. Okay, that's it for Eagles Giants. I think we're good unless you have anything really big to say. I did want to get your thoughts on the Greg Newsom for Tyson Campbell trade, just because we're here and we didn't hit it. You know, it happened after we taped, and you're a Browns fan and I just watched Greg Newsom be targeted quite a bit by Carson Wentz. It did okay in that game, but also gave up some plays. But I think's had a good season so far for the Browns. What a surprising trade that Greg Newsom goes to the Jaguars, who are in you know, contention here for the AFC South title, and they trade a guy who's under a long term contract, Tyson Campbell, for Greg Newson, A rare challenge trade. Newsom is going to be a free agent after this year, whereas the Browns get a guy in Campbell who's cost controlled maybe about fifteen million the year for the next few years. What did you think of a very surprising trade. A couple of late round picks were exchanged in it that that the Browns get to go higher in the draft. But to me that was a less important part of the deal.

Speaker 5: One, the Jaguars are very much interested in capitalizing on their hot start, on the fact that they're four and one and coming off of a win over the Chiefs, and they believe the time is now to I guess go all in to a degree by Trady for a guy in Newsom who's always played the opposite corner of Denzel Ward and done a pretty good job, he was not a guy I think the Browns were interested in paying long term at the market rate that he was probably going to command.

Speaker 5: Of where the Browns are as a team right now, which is that A they are very much open for business, and B they'd rather get somebody under team control with a.

Speaker 5: That that contract kind of bumps up in cap number a couple of years from now, but it's a low enough number next year that they can get through the end of the Watson contract and it's affordable, and they have a player that they can line up opposite ward before they have to start, you know, reallocating some of that money elsewhere, including to that contract. So it's an example of two teams in very different places that picked up the phone and said, look, yeah, we'll send you Greg newsoon as long as you give us a replacement who's like somewhat comparable. And I think that they both got that deal. They both achieved that in this deal. But it was a bit of a surprise given that I thought the most shocking news from the Browns this week would be the Joe Flacco trade.

Speaker 1: You know, I really liked Tyson Campbell a couple of years ago, and as it was explained by John Shipley on SI dot Com, they just didn't see Tyson Campblell as a scheme fit and he wasn't playing well in this system that happened. He's a good man coverage corner. That's how he wins. He's not a huge cornerback, but he plays tough. That's the type of football that the Browns play a lot of man coverage. Relatively, they had Newsom playing in the slot quite a bit just because that's where they needed him.

Speaker 1: The Jaguars c Newsom as a guy who's more of a player, who's going to be good in zone with his eyes on the quarterback and looking to be more of a playmaker. That makes total sense to me, And I think from the Browns perspective, if you could sign Tyson Campbell to a contract and free agency, it would cost a lot more than they're going to pay him. So now they have a guy at what could be a pretty thin position for them next year.

Speaker 1: What I really like about is that the Jaguars especially are just going to be rams like whereas like they if they think they can improve their team, they're just going to go do it, like forget about convention. I know, Like they're in the mix and it's kind of unconventional to trade a starter for a starter in the middle of the season like this, Like who cares. They're just trying to get better for now and the future. And if they really love Greg Newsom. They can put the franchise tag on him or figure out a contract with him in the future.

And at the zone versus man thing, I think is good because if you look at what they did against the Chiefs, seventy three point nine percent zone coverage on Monday. So you're absolutely right about the scheme fit. There is one adjustment that Greg Newsom is going to have to make. Jim Schwartz encourages his players to celebrate every success. Yes, Greg news Some built a reputation in Cleveland for dancing rather expressively after the smallest of victories in which a throw might have been five yards over the head of the guy that he was covering. But he's still gonna celebrate seat belt. He had this like guitar strumming celebration. Jags fans, you're either going to see a lot of Greg news Some celebrating on some big or small plays, or he's gonna have to tone it down.

But because it's been gradual, I don't think maybe like the average fan has seen like, oh, this is his breakout season, because it's been so steady. What do you think you've improved the most at since you entered the league.

You guys run a lot of stuff out a pistol. I know Zach Robinson well from from back here in LA and I know he really appreciates you being able to see everything laying out and unfolding in front of you, almost like how a quarterback would in the gun, right, So can you kind of explain what that is to you to be able to kind of see the portrait unfold and then pick your spots accordingly when you can see everything in front of you like that.

Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, well, first off, like it's sto line that that that helps me do all that. You know, those guys up there are are tremendous when it comes to communication, when it comes to you know, finding those slips and passing off blocks and getting to the second level and making those cuts happen. Like it's it's all those guys when it when it at the end of the day and when it comes down to it, and for me, it's just you know, using using my vision and just anticipating with what's coming before it even happens, before the play even starts.

Speaker 7: To use my eyes at a very high level and to manipulate linebackers, safeties, uh D, linemen just just every every one of them because when I do that and when I'm controlling the pace of the game, then then everything else is taking care of yourself. So you know, it's it's a it's a really big, you know thing in my game that I that I really take pride in and obviously I want to continue to you know, up that level.

And I guess I wonder what that shift feels like and can can your teammates feel it when you're feeling it?

Then when the past game gets going and the run game opens up. So we just played complimentary ball with each other on this offense, and like you said, with Zrab, you know, he's so big into playing complimentary football and make sure that we're affecting the game, in both run game and pass game, and that's just that's just our identity, and for us to continue to be consistent with that, like knowing the details, knowing the little things that we're supposed to do, and even when me being in the past game as well, like me knowing those kind of details as well, is very important for us to be the team we want to be, but they'd be the offense we want to become too.

This is something I've been dying to ask you because I heard Leonard Floyd talking about in training camp how Michael Pennix talks a little smack And you would think, you know, interviewing him in the past and all that he's quiet and and all of that, but you keep hearing these things coming out of Atlanta that he's he's chattering, he's talking to to the defense. Can you kind of peel the curtain back on that a little bit, Like what's he really like when he's when he's feeling it when he gets going, Yeah.

Speaker 7: I mean he's super super calm and collected. Like that's that's Mike, that's his game, that's who he is as a person. And for him, I mean, yeah, when the when the moment presents itself and when when the like maybe he might say a couple of things, might say a couple of words, but in all aspects of it, he's so locked into what he has to do. He's so locked into his his process. Like you know, you might not get that a lot out of him, but if you get it out of him, that means he's just on a different level, ready to gang, ready to go. And you know, it's been fun to watch. It's it's fun to see. It's been fun to just be a part of because you know, he's so talented, but not only that, he's so smart in his process and how he goes about it.

Speaker 1: I look at this team and think how you've already in such a short season, had a little bit of everything. Like you had you had a dominant prime time win, you had a like a heartbreaking loss in Week one which was back and forth division rivalry game. You had a rough game in Carolina where you guys got shut out, and then you had an offensive explosion, and your defense has been pretty consistently good, I would say for the most part throughout. So make the case, uh, John of like where this team is going to go and you know why, you you know, can can accomplish some of the goals that I know you guys have set out for yourself.

Speaker 7: Yeah, I think the biggest thing for us, as you just said, is for us to be consistent, you know West for this season. We have to take every take everything one game at a time, like not look ahead. You know, we have to make sure that we're in the moment of of this game, of this week, of every single day, because I feel when we start looking ahead and we start going in the games complacent, and that's when we lose.

Speaker 7: So it's very important for us to play with continue to play with that edge, continue to play for each other as a team, play for God, like play for play for everything that we're supposed to do. So that's that's the most important thing. Rest as a team as individuals and you know, we really came together during that loss against the Panthers and it really changed the direct you know how we just look at the rest of these games, how we look at each other as the team, and it just really brought us closer together so we can be at our best.
