<v Speaker 1>to talk to you about movies of the eighties that
<v Speaker 1>you watched during Halloween.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah. These are much more in our wheelhouse right here.
<v Speaker 1>Yes, because we were not five.
<v Speaker 2>We actually could watch these right right. I feel like
<v Speaker 2>there's like the sliding scale, like a double sliding scale
<v Speaker 2>of these type of movies. Yeah, there's there's like the
<v Speaker 2>scary scale, and then there's the fun scale. Yes, I
<v Speaker 2>feel like the seventies movies were really high on the
<v Speaker 2>scary scale, but not very high on the fun scale.
<v Speaker 1>I would agree with that for the most part. Yes,
<v Speaker 1>it was the introduction of horror in a whole new
<v Speaker 1>kind of way, and then they took it in the eighties.
<v Speaker 1>They took it and ran with it in a whole
<v Speaker 1>lot of different directions.
<v Speaker 2>I really feel like a lot of these movies are
<v Speaker 2>just tons of fun.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, and just you know, we mentioned in our first episode,
<v Speaker 1>neither Jason nor I are horror movie guys. There are
<v Speaker 1>entire podcasts devoted to the horror movie world, and we
<v Speaker 1>encourage everybody to go listen to those if that's your thing.

<v Speaker 1>there will definitely be some slasher movies on here, and

<v Speaker 1>It is gonna be fun. Now. I will tell you this.
<v Speaker 1>Whenever I was composing my seventies list, I mean, we
<v Speaker 1>talked about how young we were at the time. I
<v Speaker 1>struggled to get five movies that I had actually seen
<v Speaker 1>my honorable mentions were just movies that I wanted to
<v Speaker 1>go see because hey, they look like they were good movies.
<v Speaker 1>I couldn't even come up with seven movies that were
<v Speaker 1>Halloween ish movies that I had seen this go round.
<v Speaker 1>I struggled. There are a lot of movies that are
<v Speaker 1>Halloween ish movies that I had to had to kill
<v Speaker 1>some babies.
<v Speaker 2>As you say, when you said you struggled, I was like, man,
<v Speaker 2>surely you've seen a lot of movies in the eighties
<v Speaker 2>that were scary. Fun.
<v Speaker 1>I have seen a lot of movies in the eighties
<v Speaker 1>that were fun. And don't call me shirty. That's gonna
<v Speaker 1>come up later. That joke is gonna come up later.
<v Speaker 1>I'm so excited. Okay, Jason, Before we go on, I
<v Speaker 1>just wanted to tell you we've got some friends who
<v Speaker 1>have a podcast. I was on their Facebook page today

<v Speaker 1>about Halloween movies. We mentioned in our last episode that
<v Speaker 1>we didn't really feel like Alien, even though it's a
<v Speaker 1>horror in space, we didn't really feel like it was
<v Speaker 1>a Halloween movie. It's more like a sci fi movie.
<v Speaker 1>And Jaws, we thought this is a summer blockbuster, beach movie.
<v Speaker 1>This is not a you watch it around Halloween movie.
<v Speaker 1>You may feel differently, and that's cool, that's okay, that's right.
<v Speaker 1>You can have your opinion. We're going to give you ours.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, that's right. You know, there's a case to be
<v Speaker 2>made that the Terminator from nineteen eighty four, the original
<v Speaker 2>Terminator movie, is formulaically a horror movie, absolutely unstoppable, killing machine.
<v Speaker 1>Throw a predator into the mix too. Oh yeah, maybe, okay,
<v Speaker 1>it's a monster It's true. Yeah, it's a monster movie.
<v Speaker 2>Not really killing babysitters. But it is the same idea.
<v Speaker 1>Right. Well, with that, let us begin our top five countdown. Five.

<v Speaker 2>Recall okay, and wasn't really fast tracking, and so he
<v Speaker 2>needed a project, and so he attacked this movie, which
<v Speaker 2>is actually a sort of reimagining of a nineteen fifties movie.
<v Speaker 1>Okay, I think I know, I think I know what
<v Speaker 1>the movie is, but you go ahead and give me
<v Speaker 1>a couple more clues.
<v Speaker 2>The lead actor and lead actress were a real life couple.
<v Speaker 1>I know what the movie is, and let's punt that
<v Speaker 1>one down the road, that one down the road. Yep, okay,
<v Speaker 1>all right, you ready for my number five? Yes, aam
<v Speaker 1>all right number five. The director of this movie would
<v Speaker 1>go on to direct Spring Break and Deep Star six. Okay,
<v Speaker 1>you don't know it right off the bat from that one,

<v Speaker 2>Deep Star six and spring Break.

<v Speaker 1>Okay, all right? So Lou Reid owned a farm next
<v Speaker 1>to the filming location of this movie, and he would
<v Speaker 1>come by the set, hang out, play and sing for
<v Speaker 1>the cast and crew, and according to everyone there was
<v Speaker 1>the coolest guy.
<v Speaker 2>Lou read, Lou read Okay, nothing, still nothing, Okay, I'm.
<v Speaker 1>Gonna keep going, all right. The most prolific actor in
<v Speaker 1>this movie took the part because she needed money for
<v Speaker 1>a new car. She read the script and thought it
<v Speaker 1>was quote a piece of shit that no one would see. Okay,

<v Speaker 1>have gotten it from that clue. But I'm gonna keep going, okay.
<v Speaker 1>Another star in this movie is Harry Crosby, son of
<v Speaker 1>Bing Crosby. It had a five hundred and fifty thousand budget,
<v Speaker 1>but grossed almost thirty nine million domestic and fifty nine
<v Speaker 1>million worldwide.
<v Speaker 2>I'm gonna take a guess none of this is ringing
<v Speaker 2>like my major bells here. But low budget, yes, very successful. Yes,
<v Speaker 2>a lot of people I've semi tangentally heard of. I'm
<v Speaker 2>gonna say, Friday the thirteenth.

<v Speaker 1>stayed at the shooting location. That camp that they were at,
<v Speaker 1>huh where they watched either Barbarilla or Marathon Man on

<v Speaker 2>Great man, Hey, you know this took place at Camp
<v Speaker 2>Crystal Lake, a fictional place. I believe the actual location
<v Speaker 2>of the camp is in New Jersey, and our buddy
<v Speaker 2>Jeff Johnson and David Burns have been there, and you
<v Speaker 2>can like tour the you can lay in the bed
<v Speaker 2>where Kevin Bacon was killed.
<v Speaker 1>Fantastic, I know right. I think you get the line
<v Speaker 1>out the door for that.
<v Speaker 2>Excellent choice at number five. So we're on to my

<v Speaker 2>Charlie Sheen was originally cast in this movie, but was
<v Speaker 2>rejected because he was too good looking.
<v Speaker 1>I know this one, Okay, I know it already. You

<v Speaker 2>One of the most famous scenes in the movie was
<v Speaker 2>inspired by the elevator scene from The Shining Okay. The
<v Speaker 2>sleep doctor who treats the main character in this movie
<v Speaker 2>is played by Charles Flesher, who also is the voice
<v Speaker 2>of Roger Rabbit and the main girl in this movie
<v Speaker 2>is of course Tulsa's own Heather Landing Camp.
<v Speaker 1>This has to be Nima and Elm Street.
<v Speaker 3>The kids of Elm Street. I don't know it yet,

<v Speaker 1>good looking for this part. We needed a more Yeah,

<v Speaker 2>Yeah, I love it. By the way, Johnny Depp, this
<v Speaker 2>is his acting debut. And I mean I kind of
<v Speaker 2>got mixed signals on this because Charlie Sheen was rejected.
<v Speaker 2>Johnny Depp was hired because Wes Craven's daughter thought he
<v Speaker 2>was cute.
<v Speaker 1>There you go, you know.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah.
<v Speaker 1>I mean the story behind that movie is incredible because
<v Speaker 1>Heather Langencamp and Robert England had a conversation about this
<v Speaker 1>movie and talked about how it was almost Shakespearean in nature,
<v Speaker 1>like they really dove into the deep on this movie,
<v Speaker 1>and Wes Craven was inspired to write the movie from
<v Speaker 1>actual stories that he had read of people dying in
<v Speaker 1>their sleep, right, Like I remember I still bugs me
<v Speaker 1>to this day because he described in detail about this
<v Speaker 1>kid who just wouldn't go to sleep. His parents were
<v Speaker 1>trying to make him go to sleep, but he tried
<v Speaker 1>to explain to him that someone was going to murder
<v Speaker 1>him while he was sleeping, and he didn't want to
<v Speaker 1>go and he knew the killer would be in his dreams,
<v Speaker 1>and they were like given him sleeping pills and he
<v Speaker 1>would spit the sleeping pills out. But eventually the body
<v Speaker 1>just wears out. He eventually falls asleep and dies in
<v Speaker 1>his sleep. When they come into his room after obviously
<v Speaker 1>they've taken the body out, they discover that he has
<v Speaker 1>got a coffee machine inside of his closet. He's doing
<v Speaker 1>everything he can to stay awake.
<v Speaker 2>You know, one of the most tense things about watching
<v Speaker 2>these movies. Now we can talk about the sequels. Some
<v Speaker 2>are some are not good. Mostly it's just kind of
<v Speaker 2>police academy like crap, right, right, But the most tense
<v Speaker 2>thing about watching the first movie is that they're dying
<v Speaker 2>to not go to sleep, and you're watching and going
<v Speaker 2>you have to sleep. You know, you've got to face this. Yeah,
<v Speaker 2>and Nancy's like, I've gone four days without sleep. Every
<v Speaker 2>time I watch I'm like, oh my gosh, that would
<v Speaker 2>be the worst.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah.
<v Speaker 2>And then there's that one I know as kids, the
<v Speaker 2>scene that freaked us out the most is when you
<v Speaker 2>know Freddy can kind of alter his appearance and do
<v Speaker 2>these weird things because he's in your dreams. He has
<v Speaker 2>these like extended arms like this one scene's this one
<v Speaker 2>weird effect where he has like ten foot arms.
<v Speaker 1>Oh yeah, and never that.
<v Speaker 2>As thirteen year olds, we were like, whoa, that is scary.
<v Speaker 1>The most vivid memory for me very much like the
<v Speaker 1>end of Friday of the thirteenth, but you know, spoiler
<v Speaker 1>alert for everybody out there, Jason doesn't make his appearance
<v Speaker 1>until the last second of Friday of the thirteenth, right,
<v Speaker 1>and it's not what you're expecting, right, and Nightmare on
<v Speaker 1>Elm Street. You think everything's good and everything's over, just
<v Speaker 1>like at the end of f Right of the third teenth,
<v Speaker 1>Then all of a sudden, the monster pops out again
<v Speaker 1>in that very last second, and that was I was like, oh,
<v Speaker 1>oh my gosh. Yeah, that was intense.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, great movie. A top notch eighties horror movie.
<v Speaker 1>Very good. Okay, so we're to my number, you're number

<v Speaker 1>creator and designer of The Brindle. Fly the audience, cheered
<v Speaker 1>and the producer turned to him and, said you're going
<v Speaker 1>to win The oscar this, year and he, Did.
<v Speaker 2>Wow, Yeah i'll tell you. What you, know we talk

<v Speaker 2>and the gore level, rises and the horror rises when
<v Speaker 2>he barks on that guy's leg and his face like tears.
<v Speaker 2>Apart you still are. Heartbroken when he puts the shotgun
<v Speaker 2>on his. Head it's still, heartbreaking but you're absolutely horrified
