Cloudy With A Chance Of...BABIES!!
Foaling season is getting close, and the farm is starting to feel a little extra busy š“
In this episode of Katching Up With Katie, Iām sharing what life looks like right before foaling season really kicks off. Weāre checking on pregnant mares, talking through foal watch plans, and getting into some very farm-specific debates about what should be playing in the barn during late nights. Of course, things spiral into games, side conversations, and plenty of laughs along the way.
This episode feels like a snapshot of the calm before the storm, all the planning, anticipation, and randomness that comes with getting ready for baby season on the farm. Itās one of those times where everything feels close but not quite happening yet, and I love bringing yāall along for that part of the journey š
Let me know in the comments what youād play or watch during foal watch, or drop any questions you want answered in an upcoming Q&A.

Welcome 0:03 Wow. Weāre just going to wait on Nate to clean his new Jeffrey Dahmer glasses. 0:08 I know. Whenever he leaves, Iām going to switch these microphones and put that little red thing on this one. Heās not going to know. 0:15 Iām going to tell him six months later. Iāve marked it in other ways. He hasnāt. I have. He hasnāt. Heās not going to know. 0:20 I know. And Iām going to tell him, and itās just going toā Whoās going to know? Youāll know. What would you do if you found out that you were this close to 0:28 something that Mattās mouth had been this close to for so long? 0:34 I would just be disappointed. I would just melt. Heād be like, āOh.ā 0:42 Okay, welcome back to Katching Up With Katie. This is our first Katching Up With Katie that we filmed in the new year, 0:49 in 2026. Weāre super excited for everything to come. We have a lot to talk about. Not really anything important, but we do have a game planned. 0:59 Before we do that, weāre going to go out of the podcast room and into the mini barn. Mini Barn Update 1:06 Weāre in the mini barn for a moment because I need to show you some differences in Coco. 1:12 Honestly, we did not think there would be a race for who would be first to foal in 2026 between Raven and the mini horse. Maybe for second to foal. 1:22 Her due date is February 10th. Minis can actually foal a little earlier than the big horses safely. 1:29 Sheās still kind of early for me, but her udder blew up from yesterday. So, letās take a look at her. 1:36 Sheās 305 days today. I actually just texted my vet because with the minis, there are a lot of females over at the mini 1:45 farm, and we donāt love to handle progesterone if we donāt have to, in the form of Regu-Mate. 1:50 It can cause a lot of issues with human females, with cycles and hormones and stuff like that. 1:56 At the big barn, itās always a male who gives the horses their Regu-Mate. 2:02 We have our mini maresā progesterone levels tested, 2:09 and if theyāre fine, we donāt give them Regu-Mate. I just texted my vet because with her udder blowing up, 2:16 sheās been laying down a lot and acting a lot different. Thatās not necessarily uncommon at this stage of pregnancy, 2:22 but I want to make sure she cooks it a little bit longer. Again, she could probably have a healthy baby at this point, 2:27 but I would love for her to make it another week. So, we might be giving her some Regu-Mate after today. 2:33 She has a nice little clipping. I donāt know if you can tell, but weāve got a nice little clip job going on. 2:40 You can actually see her udder, so if the baby starts nuzzling, itās not getting a mouthful of long hair. 2:46 With miniature horses, because they have such thicker coats than the big horses, itās been known for foals to ingest so much of their momās 2:56 hair while trying to nurse that they colic and get an impaction. We donāt want that. 3:02 Yeah, we did a little trim job. If you want to come see her udder, itās significantly bigger than yesterday. I 3:09 donāt think this is the biggest it will get, but seeing that difference spooked me a little bit. 3:15 But yeah, Coco, I donāt know. We might be having a race between Raven and Coco for whoās going to foal first. 3:21 Hey, yāall. Itās Katie. Did you know that you can bring a little piece of Running Springs into your home? 3:27 And just so you know, if youāre a paid subscriber on TikTok, Facebook, or Instagram, you will always get a 25% off discount with your subscriber code on the merch store. 3:37 Weāve got the cutest merch featuring all the farm favorites, like our mini cows, mares and foals, goats, donkeys, and of course, the mini horses. 3:45 Youāll find t-shirts, cozy hoodies, zip-ups, mugs, and so much more. Some of the designs are limited edition, so when theyāre gone, 3:53 theyāre gone. But donāt worry, a few favorites stick around at least until the end of the year. Weāve also started adding fun new things like diamond art kits, 4:00 paint-by-number sets, shoe charms, and even coloring books. Trust me, thereās a lot more coming later this year, 4:06 so check back often. And donāt forget to join the email list so you donāt miss out on the new drops. So head over to katyvanvslike.net to get all of your favorites before theyāre gone. 4:15 And now, back to the video. Whoa, gang. That was wild. That was crazy. 4:21 Weāre going to keep an eye on that. I really hope that she makes it past day 315, at least. So thatās another 10 days. 4:29 Thatās just kind of how foaling season is going right now. Raven is the only one in her safe zone. Foal Watch Talk 4:35 Sheās at 326 today, so weāre on the cusp of being on foal watch for her. 4:41 But now Coco is being kind of off, and weāre going to 4:46 have three mares due at the exact same time. Itās going to be a little crazy. So, low-key, I kind of want to justā 4:54 I would compare it to⦠I donāt know if I can say this. I guess I would compare it to when my wife and I, before we had Lily, had a breast pump for 5:08 milk. She tried it, and then the very next morning we went to the hospital to deliver. Yeah, they tell you not to do that. 5:14 So, of course, luckily she was huge, so we did. But anyway, I think we should just go ahead and stay tonight and kick off. 5:26 But what if weāre a week away? Because we might be. Thatās okay. 5:32 I didnāt pack my go bag yet. Nateās like, āWhy are you volunteering us for this? 5:37 I donāt want to be here if I donāt have to be.ā Was I in that? I mean, I can just be me. 5:42 Heās like, āYou know what? Why donāt I just move in? Only Matt stays. Iām just going to move in. Iāll be on watch.ā 5:49 Iāll watch. We are really excited, though, because this is our fourth foaling season. 5:56 The first one we ever didāno, 2023 was our first one. Yeah, fourth one. 6:02 So 2023, we didnāt actually get a single foal birth on camera because yāall sucked. 6:12 And the commitment just wasnāt there. Yeah, the commitment wasnāt there, but now it is. Then in 2024, we got almost all of them. 6:20 2025, we got all but one, and I didnāt even see that one. 6:25 And then in 2026, weāve got nine full-grown and then three minis. 6:33 Iām so excited for the minis. I am, too. Weāre kind of on the cusp of all that, so weāll talk about that later. Iāll 6:40 go look at Raven, and weāll see if we need someone to stay over. I think I just want to do it while the excitementās alive, 6:45 because itās not going to be there very long. Why do you say that? Before long, everybody will just be dead. 6:51 Lindsay is going to be helping with foal watch this year. Sheās never been a part of it, so sheās going to be bringing the vibes. 6:58 So funny watching you through this little gap we have, you and I. Oh, hey. We have this tiny little gap between the camera. Youāre split for me. 7:06 Yeah, right with the cord. You think youāll be able to carry the vibes? 7:12 Absolutely huge responsibility. If the responsibility of the vibes is placed 7:18 on your shoulders, you can rise to the occasion. Absolutely. Weāve got the ping pong table set up, which Nate and I have to revisit. Weāve got a duel. 7:29 Weāre going to be doing a lot more live videos. Yeah, thatāll be fun. Thatāll bring up the vibes. 7:35 I think there are a lot of different ways weāre attacking foaling season this year from a content side of things. Nothing that would cause any issue to the actual event of foaling. 7:47 Number one priority is a healthy baby, a calm environment for mom, and making all that okay. 7:54 But we have a lot of ideas to utilize the season, so thatās really exciting. 8:02 But what was it you were talking about right before? Weāre going to put a GoPro inside the horse right before the baby comes out for a POV. 8:12 Yeah, weāre going to attach it basically to the foalās⦠probably the tip of their feet, 8:20 and then as that foot breaks through, itās kind of a POV. Worldās first POV: youāre a horse giving birth. 8:27 I have to tell you guys something. Sheās done that. What? Just kidding. 8:32 I was just about to say, I donāt know if we can put it in the video, but I put my hand up the cowās butt yesterday. 8:38 She palpated a cow. Are you serious? Did you? Yeah. It felt really weird. Nateās done that. Under supervision of a veterinarian. 8:46 So did Nate. Mine was in a controlled environment. More controlled environment. It was more of an educational manner. 8:54 Yeah, I think I got a good education. It was pretty weird. It was very weird. I bet. Well, because we found out Mabel, one of the Blue Roan cows that 9:02 was supposed to have her baby at Christmas, just hasnāt had it yet. 9:09 And so we had the vet out for a different reason, and I was like, āCan you just check her real quick? I know sheās pregnant, but can you see how pregnant?ā 9:17 So her guess is weāre two to three weeks away. She was like, āShe got a cycle later than you think.ā 9:23 Which Iām like, āI donāt know by who.ā So itās a Jerry Springer kind of deal. We donāt know who the daddy is. We donāt know. 9:32 But right before we startedāoh, yeah. What was that? Itās been tossed around that itās going to be 24/7 SpongeBob and The Office, 9:39 because somethingās going to have to be on 24/7. Last foaling season, we had like an eight-season run of SpongeBob in a Foal Watch TV Debates 9:47 row, and then the same thing with The Office. So what is our show going to be? 9:54 Iām thinking⦠no. Iām thinking⦠terrible. What was it? What was it? 10:00 Iron Chef America? No. Food Network is back here. MasterChef. MasterChef. 10:05 All of them are good. Cake Boss. Cake Boss is good. Anything thatās more competition, like Diners, 10:11 Drive-Ins and Dives. Anything Food Network, but more competition. I love it. 10:17 Also, Ink Master. Period. Ink Master, too. Have you seen it? I would watch Ink Master over and over and over. 10:23 Knowing what I know now, though, it kind of stinks to watch, but I can still appreciate it as a viewer. 10:29 Knowing how things are made kind of ruins the lore a little bit. 10:35 What show? Just shows. What are you referring to? Competition shows. Usually, ā10 minutesā isnāt really 10 minutes. 10:44 Okay, but you just said it had to be a competition show. I enjoy them, especially food stuff, 10:50 but I do have to put that in the back of my mind and just watch it and enjoy it. 10:55 You have to suspend your disbelief. Suspend your belief. Itās common with people with extremely high IQs that are overly self-aware. 11:03 So, Great British Baking Show. Yeah, thatās great. Iām still in the Harry Potter one. 11:09 No, itās great. Iām in on SpongeBob. Iām probably out on The Office. 11:14 Really? Yeah. I donāt know. We literally watched all of the seasons like three times. But that was a year ago, and it didnāt stop after foaling season. It kept going. 11:23 What about Hey Arnold? I could be down for Hey Arnold. Little Bear or Big Little Bear household? 11:29 Youāre a big Little Bear household. I could make a deal. I would be down for 24/7 SpongeBob and The Office if, 11:40 in between, we get to select an anime. Well, there is no in between. 24/7. 11:46 I am game to watch that one. What is the one⦠Attack on Titan? I will watch Attack on Titan. I just want yāall 11:52 to watch it with me because I need help comprehending. No, youāre insulting your own intelligence. 12:00 Wait, do you sub it or dub it? We would dub it. Itās a good dub. 12:07 Some dubs are good. We would dub it to make it more watchable for Katie. 12:15 I would just have to really lock in, like you just told me. Hereās the thing: I donāt think Iām passionate enough about learning it to 12:24 use the brain power to watch it fully without someone being like, āThatās because of that.ā You donāt have to be. If you get a couple episodes in, you donātā 12:32 Thatās the thing. I am a couple episodes in. Hereās the wild thing: I was the same way. Literally around this time two years ago, 12:40 or a year ago, I was in your shoes. Sat exactly where you sat, said the exact same thing. 12:46 I watched the first episode, I looked at Nate, he looked at me, and I havenāt watched real TV since. 12:52 He started his Attack on Titan journey last year in foaling season, then decided he was 12:58 going to wear headphones, not talk to anyone, and watch it in the middle of the living room. 13:06 Then we realized he was on the final episode, and we look over and heās sobbing. 13:11 Itās quite the story. Oh, itās so good. Itās so good. In the middle of everybody. 13:16 And itās even better the second time you watch it. What makes us think youāre not going to do that again? 13:21 You should expect that because, unfortunately, he doesnāt like us. There are about six different series with new seasons dropping in January. 13:38 So, Attack on Titanāno. Just about six different shows. Oh, six different shows? Jujutsu Kaisen. I have to watch that one. 13:45 I finished Kaiju No. 8. I love that they have a new season coming, I think. 13:50 So, the reality of the situation is not much fellowship. Itās going to be surrounded by nerds. Yeah, but for that first foaling season, weāre going to have fun. 13:57 Yes. Imagine if you just made the commitment. Can you imagine walking in one day and being like, āDid yāall see the new season of JJK?ā 14:07 Then Katie has it, and we have everything to talk about. Thatād be crazy. Now Katie is a proactive voice for all that horse girl anime. 14:22 There is a horse girl anime. But no, you made a horse girl anime. Weāre getting ahead. And then you voiced a dub. 14:30 Yoā Chat, chat⦠Iāll contact myā 14:36 Weāre getting very ahead of ourselves here. But anyway, Food Network. Iāll find something. Itās going to be the move. 14:41 Also, hereās the thing: I felt very squashed in game play last year. Foal Watch Games 14:47 I felt like no one wanted to play with me. I felt like the vibe was down. 14:52 I am a game player. I like to commit, and I need yāall to fake it, honestly, 14:59 and just play games with me. Okay, what games are you willing to play? 15:07 Will you pull your mic down a little bit? Itās hiding your mouth, so you canāt read your lips. 15:14 So, what games are you willing to play? Iām generally willing to play chess. 15:21 I donāt know how to play that, but weāll teach you. Itās fun. Do I have the brain power for that? 15:28 Yes. To win? Maybe not. 15:33 Thatās fair. Monopoly. Dungeons and Dragons. Why not? 15:42 We could literally have a campaign that ran the entire foaling season. Itās literally anything. Itās the story. 15:49 Hold on. I have a great idea, and I actually think this is a great idea. We play Dungeons and Dragons, and itās everybodyās first time. Everybodyās first time. 15:58 Thatās what we stream. Yeah. We stream us playing Dungeons and Dragons. We set that up, and theyāre like, āIf weāre on foal watch, the campaign goes on.ā 16:08 And itās everybodyās, because this is very popular, by the way. Everybodyās watching our story, our decisions, and what we decide to do. 16:15 The story could be a regular foaling set. It doesnāt have to be so crazy in-depth, you know? 16:22 Now, itās fun because you can be a sexy alien. 16:29 Iām going to print outāif you want, this is right up your alley. You get to create the character. Literally be anything. You get to create what youāre good at, 16:39 write your backstory, and how your character would interact with the world. Weāre doing this. 16:44 Now we have four people as a writer. You would love it. Okay, Iām not saying no. 16:49 What are some games that are like a one-nighter that youād be willing to play? Sorry. 16:55 For what? Thatās the game. Whatās that? Youāve never played Sorry? 17:00 No. I also would love if yāall would have the opportunity of 17:07 Catan a few more times. Iāve never played, and I would love to play. Why do you hate Catan? You liked it before I started playing. 17:14 I like Catan because at least Catan has an end. Maybe if we got a quicker end to Monopoly. Maybe if we got a different version of Catan. 17:23 Why do you not like this version? I like this version, but there are different versions. 17:29 I can get behind it a lot easier if you have committed to Dungeons and Dragons. 17:36 I could get behind anything. Yeah, I mean, Dungeons and Dragons has had a huge resurgence. Itās back. Itās cool. 17:44 Thereās Stranger Things. Thereās a group called Dimension 20, 17:50 and they do it live. There are events. They just sold out Madison Square Garden, and theyāre literally on stage playing 17:57 Dungeons & Dragons. People are watching because the stories just keep going. Itās like going and watching a play, and you decide, āHey, 18:05 somebody bust through that door. What do you do?ā I would encourage it. I would dress up. Iām going to be a sexy bartender. 18:14 Sure. Like, the dream scenario. I do fantasy, and you get likeā I donāt want to do fantasy. 18:20 What? You donāt want to do fantasy? I said youāve got to do fantasy. She said sheās going to be a bartender. Why canāt I be a fairy bartender? 18:26 You can. You can be⦠you can be a regular person. I want to be a regular person. 18:31 But you can. But I donāt want to. You donāt have to. We have books on it. 18:36 You can get a starter game that has a starter story. Medieval. No, Iām going to print outāprint out. 18:42 You can be an orc. You can do anything. You can be a wizard. You can be a Catwoman. You can be a wizard. You can beā 18:48 Let me get some literature. Can we come up with a theme that we stick to if weāre going to play it? Yeah, you do. So, the DMāone of usāwould set it in medieval times, 18:56 for example, and weād have a plot. Thereād be a time period youāre in. Yes. Here we are in medieval times. We are all four knights, for example. 19:08 And hereās the start: you get a letter that you open, 19:14 and itās like, āThe year is 1546. Youāre all sitting around a table at the parlor. 19:27 This is happening in the background. This is going on. The smell in the air is this.ā 19:34 This is where you are. You hear a noise outside the building, and something happens. 19:40 You turn to see the barkeep, who makes a face like this has happened before, 19:48 and suddenly reaches under the table to grab something. What do you do? And then you go, āWhat do you do?ā 19:54 You roll, and whatever you say youāre going to do, you have to roll. Then it works, 20:00 or it doesnāt. There are consequences, and the story changes based on what you did. 20:07 Were you effective? Did it work? It could have 15 different endings. So you say, āI want to go ask the bartender what his problem is,ā to some degree. 20:19 Itās skill and decision-making. You have to make smart decisions. You might make a stupid decision. 20:25 Youāre walking down the road. You see a fork in the road. One goes right, one goes left. 20:30 Down this path you see blank, blank, blank. Down this path you see blank, blank, blank. Which do you choose? Maybe you pass a field full of beautiful flowers and decide to pick some, 20:38 and then I tell you theyāre poisonous, and youāve got three days to live. Or you say, āI want to go right,ā but you roll the wrong number. Or your character wants to go right, but you get outvoted and everybody 20:48 goes left. Now youāre on your own. Are you going to keep going by yourself? 20:55 It gets crazy. And guys who do it like Madison Square Garden, their stories are insane. They have tables with immersive screens underneath. 21:04 If theyāre going through the ocean, youāll see waves moving. The lighting changes. You 21:09 can build a table with a TV underneath it, have a haze machineājust have your character⦠21:14 So who writes it? The DM. The dungeon master. They have all kinds of preloaded stories. You just need a dungeon masterāsomebody. 21:23 So if I did it, I would essentially be the storyteller. So, do you play? Yes. 21:29 No, youāre not a player. Youāre the architect of the story. And the really good ones have binders. They have lore. Because if you have a question, 21:42 I have to have an answer for this made-up thing we have. So whoās going to be our dungeon master? 21:48 Probably one of us. One of us, just because weāll probably put in the effort to make it good. 21:56 I feel like one of us is going to print out some characters. Personally, if itās all of our first time, Iād get an example storyāstarter packs that 22:04 have a starter story and starter characters. I would do that first. Yeah. Then we can branch off. 22:09 Letās do some research. We can branch off. But anyway, weāll get together and weāll order something. 22:14 The first stepāthis is it. Itās happening. All you have to do is print out your character sheet, fill it out, 22:21 make your character, and show up ready. We could be making our character sheets. Be ready to get tossed into a story, 22:27 into situations, and youāve got to figure out what to do. And I think it would be cool if we had a preloaded story that all four of us 22:39 could play since itās preloaded, and we could look and see what the things are. 22:45 But other than that, it would just be one DM. Anyway, I think youāll have fun. 22:51 Okay, so speaking of games, Iāve been dying to know what this is. Okay, so Matt has beenā Game Time 22:56 Itās not that special. So we decided weāre going to play this little game to end todayās episode. I 23:03 donāt even know what this game is called. I saw it on social media. So how you play: there are two players. You each have letters to start off with. 23:12 Each player knows what these letters stand for. Youāre trying to guess what your opponentās letters stand for. 23:21 So letās say the first wordā I donāt want to use mine because I already came up with it. 23:26 So the first word you say⦠donāt give the first word. You might, but weāre not going to. 23:33 You could use ācow.ā Cow. Bell. Bell tower. So, the first letter is C: cow. The next letter is B: bell. 23:40 Yep, thatās correct. And then the next letter down only has to go with the word above it. 23:47 It doesnāt have to go with the whole theme. It can kind of dance around. So if weāre going back and forth and I guess it correctly, I get to keep 23:54 going. If I guess it incorrectly, it goes to her turn to guess mine. 24:01 Got you. And I think you can ask for a hint, and instead of guessing, 24:08 you ask for a letter. Or a hint, or whatever. But youāre giving up your turn. 24:14 Gotcha. And I think thatās about it. So we were going to play rock, paper, scissors for who goes first. So yāall two are going against each other. 24:21 Yeah. Rock, paper, scissors. Shoot. Okay. My first word is camera. 24:29 Whatās your first word? Shark. Shark and camera. Shark. Okay, Iām going to keep mine up. 24:36 Yeah, keep it up. Okay. Rock, paper, scissors. Rock, paper, scissors. Shoot. 24:43 All right, I go first. Okay. The letter is T under shark. So Iām going to say āshark tail.ā 24:54 No. Okay, then I got it wrong. So now itās your turn. What is it? An M. 24:59 Cameraman. Yes. Okay. Man-child. 25:06 I didnāt think you were going to get that one. Okay. I would have. I wouldnāt have. I would have said āman camera file.ā 25:13 Youāre not going to get this one. Are you sure? Yes. Iām thinking of a Vine. 25:19 A child. I can promise you. Youāre so barefooted. You know what Vine Iām thinking of? 25:26 Yes. A child. Thatās what Iām thinking of. 25:32 I thought you meant a type of vine. I was like, āWhat?ā No, itās like a Vine video. No, I know. 25:38 Okay. Can I have a hint? Okay. You get a letter. 25:43 You do a letter. Yeah, because you might give a good hint versus a bad hint, and the letter rulesāso you gave up your chance. 25:51 Thatās fine. Guess now. Okay. Not āshark tail.ā So itās shark⦠26:10 Is it so obvious? Oh, big time. I mean, I could be wrong. Tooth. 26:15 No. See, now that was a good one. I didnāt think of that, but thatās a good one. 26:20 But thatās definitely not it. Clearly, Iām having a hard time. 26:27 Also, I just changed my answer because now Iām thinking itās something different, too. Anyway⦠okay. Iām going to have to ask for a hint on the next one. Or a letter. 26:48 I need another hint. No, another letter. 26:54 Or if you want a hint insteadālike a regular hint. No, a letter. I donāt even know how to getā Itās hard to be fair with hints, because what if you give a bad one? 27:02 Okay, I need a letter. 27:10 No, that doesnāt help me at all, because I already said āshark tail.ā 27:19 I have a hint if you want. It couldnāt be words that are just in the same category. 41:43 They need to go together. It would have to be like a phrase, like āmoonlight.ā 41:49 Iām worried that it might not be the one sheās guessing right now. Yeah. Pause. Let me doubleā 41:59 Youāre still on me, right? Am I on you? I canāt believe youāve done this. Ah. I hate that itās gone this way. 43:43 I mean, youāve won, for sure. I donāt know. Yeah, but it doesnāt feel right. So happy you stumped us. 43:49 It doesnāt feel right. I think Iām going to need another letter instead of just shooting off the hip. Iām going to give you another guess as well. 44:01 Okay, I think I got it. 44:09 Iāll even allow you, because it almost feels wrong to me. No more characters. 46:10 I just thought that was the one I was most excited about: Treebeard. Well, hereās what I thought would happen. I thought you would get through sunshade quickly, 46:19 get to tree, get stumped, have to ask for a couple letters, then be like, āBeard,ā and Iām like, āYep.ā 46:26 Then you would get beard, hair, and net really fast. I thought we would fly through this, maybe a couple turns of being stumped here. 46:34 And I thought Iād probably be stumped on one of yours, which I was. Saber got me. 46:40 I thought you had clocked it immediately, and I couldnāt be likeābecause showtime. 46:49 Thatās where we didnāt get to shade fast enough.
