Speaker 1: This weekend Indie's best friend. It was Indie's best friend's birthday, and we did a whole bunch of weekend activities with their family, and so we did like a tour of kids stuff. Uh Saturday Knotsberry Farm Sunday David Busters. Oh yes, I cannot tell you how awesome Knotsberry Farm. Miss It's the best park ever. We went on the ghost Rider, uh roller coaster. It's the greatest roller coaster I've ever been in my life. I went on it three times. It's an old wooden one, so yeah, it's scary in that like like old thing die yes, but it's so fast and it was I just I just have not had that much fun at an amusement park. Like it was just incredible. And then they have the Pony Express, which is a ride where you're straddling like a horse roller coaster like you're and then it has like a thing to hold you in place and it goes like zero to sixty miles per hour in like a second. It's a really short little roller coaster. We wrote it five times. I just have not had that much fun at an amusement park in years. I was just like, yeah, so and now all I want to do is that get a season's past to not Sberry Farm. So you don't hear about it that much. Everyone talks about Disney Legend. Did you eat the Jam? No? Is there actual like notch Berry Jam? That's good? Yes, I gotta go back. Did you pan for Gold? Do they still have that? I think they do, but I did know. But they do have this one ride which is like a mind you take a train through the mine, and it was like the most boring ride ever f o kids. But then our friend's little sister who's through four, she's just turned four, loved it and went and made her mom take her three times. There's a lot for little kids to do there, right, Yeah, Yeah, it's a great park. Yes, I just didn't realize, Like I don't know why I hadn't been there since I was like ten, and I don't remember their legendary Their Halloween Fright Nights are absolutely legendary. The different mazes they do and people jumping out and scaring you. It's like place to go. It's not very farm. Yeah, I guess I thought it was sort of like six Flags, like you know, just kind of like right, big roller coasters. But the reality is it has like little and has an old mining town section that ghost town. It has like a carnival section, like a boardwalk area, it has like atmosphere. It's great. It's a great park. Yeah, shout out to Anotsbury Farm. Well, you've I recently my cousins have passes there and they recently were also saying, my gosh, this park is incredible and it's amazing. So it's made me want to take It's what made me want to take Adler. He was probably still too young, but I want to. I want to go and take Adler and if you guys get passes, then maybe we could go there and have a joint day. Yes, I like. I woke up the next day going I want to ride the ghost Rider again, this feeling. I just want to have the rush of this roller coaster. Yeah, if it's if it's anything like a good old school wooden roller coaster, you wake up the next day saying, man, I want to ride that again and urinating blood. And that's how you know they have Okay, so they have their their version of the Goofy Sky School too, like the exact same rollers. It's clear that Disney like, took the idea from Knotsberry because it's like, you know, right in the same part of town. And Indie made me ride it and it was a nightmare. I was exactly the same way. My eyes closed the entire time. It's all those short turns on the top of the track and I was just sitting there going, no, no, I don't like this, I don't like this. And he was like the drops. I'm like, the drops are fine. It's these backbreaking turns where I swear we're going to fall off the top of the investors the investors. I love that you just shortened knots Berry Farm and knots Berry. I've never heard it. I'm going to start calling at that. There. They took it from knots Berry, took it to the Kaby ticket to the Kaby. Oh God, that's so Funden was a big Nottsbury Farm fan. He was like a big in general, A yeah, our guy. So that's how you spent your weekend. I got to go on the Mash Matters podcast on Saturday and just talk about Mash for two. Get out of your system, you know. Oh, it's just added. If there's a whole questions galore. Now more questions, who who? What is this podcast? This is just a huge fan and ask you to come on. Yes, I wish that was the story. I actually emailed them and invited myself on the podcast. Acast No, I didn't even give im somewhat famous. The phone number is like something something something four oh double seven to get and and they have the email address. So I wrote them. I was like, I'm just on every morning for a double seven the mash the their their place was there, The four double seven was their call sign. Gotcha? So I would listen to this podcast every time I went for a walk. So I just wrote them an email saying I'm a huge fan, I'm a Mash file, I love it. And at the end I finished by going, and you know, when you have me on the podcast, we can talk more about this dot dot dot just kidding, knowing full well I wanted to be invited on this podcast, and so it was. It's hosted by a fan and by Jeff Maxwell. Fans named Ryan Patrick and Jeff Maxwell who played the character Igor Strauminsky on the show, and we just talked about mash for two hours. It was the best. I can't believe you you even came here today like your life is done, just laid down, pulled the blanket up right. Yeah, I said, that's so funny because I said that on the podcast. I said when I did a thing for kimpossible back in the day, I literally got to host a show at the Royal Albert Hall in London to a packed crowd. I did not tell my brothers the Mash Matters podcast. I called, like, guys, I'm gonna be talking to Igor. So it was, yeah, that shows the Fornell family what it's like. So yes, that was myce. That was my knots very farm. It was great. What did you do this weekend, Danielle? Oh, absolutely nothing. I chased around Kiki, who is in my least faith at stage of toddlerhood. It's just I gotta be honest. Adler's in my favorite phase he's ever been in. He's so fun. He's so like full conversations, full like make believe play. He will sit down and watch something and ask me questions about it. And Kiki is literally just like picking things up and throwing it across the room and then running into something and then tripping and falling and then going crying and then me picking him up and then being like bobbles, bobbles, bobbles, like he loves bubbles. He wants to take a bath all the time. I'm just constantly running after him, trying to stop him from killing himself, keep swallowing things or yeah, he's always picking things up, putting things in his mouth. He wants to run with like a like a you know the little drum kit we have that that you guys played with Laddler. He wants to kick. He wants to run with the drumstick in his mouth. I'm like, no, you can't do that. Oh, he's seventeen months. I'm like, when do we get to the this part? This is not my favorite part. I'm ready for this part to be over. Also, it's also because he's a second kid, right, like you're just like all the wonder and novelty of it is like completely worn off. Sae. That's exactly what I said to Jensen last night. I said, I feel bad because whatever stage this was for Adler, I was like, I love this one. It's so fun and out with Keaton. I'm like, ah, when are you gonna grow up? Wait? He said this to who Sorry um producer Jensen Carr, husband of this podcast, thank you. I was like, who are you talking about? You guys? Sorry on producer Jensen husband of this podcast with somebody named Jensen Strange. Oh, welcome to pod Meat's world. I'm Danielle Fishel, I'm writer Strong, and I'm Wilfrede. So today we have season two, episode nine, Fear Strikes Out. It originally aired November eighteenth, nineteen ninety four. The synopsis is that after some bad advice from Eric, Corey makes the mistake of hesitating to kiss Tepanga in front of everyone at a makeout party, leading his peers to ridicule him about his shyness, and mister Turner has a new love interest and several new ties. Yes, oh, the guys, the Turner's Ties. It was directed by David Traynor was written by Susan Astelle Jansen. It guest stars Danny McNulty as Harvey Harley Kiner, Blake Soaper as Joseph Joey the ratt Epstein Ethan Seplie is Frankie Stacchino, Darlene Vogel as Catherine Kat Tompkins who played Spike, a member of Griff's future Gang and Back to the Future too. Really more than that. With Back to the Future, she was also speaking of a perfect, perfect, perfect place to transition on the Back to the Future ride at Universal when you used to get wait in line forever to get that. There was a video that continued to play, and she was the host of the whole Back to the Future ride. You're exactly right, So you would sit there and watch her before, like, hey, welcome to the you know when you enter your DeLorean just she I remember talking to her. I remember that, and I remember she had the coolest eyes. One eye was blue and the their eye was blue and then cut perfectly in half and then solid gray. Why don't we She was the nicest person. Tony and I would sit there and talk to her all day long. Yeah, she was really cool and would tell us all these Back to the Future stories. I had no idea. I never somehow I missed that completely because I would. I loved Back to the Future. I probably would have geeked out if i'd known, but I didn't. He was in the Future Gang where they all attack him in the Yeah, she's awesome. Yeah, so writer, I don't think she was in any scenes with you. Which meant she while she was working, you were always in school, so you wouldn't have had any downtown in the cafeteria together. I feel like we're all in the cafeteria at one point. I don't think, maybe, well we'll get to it, Well, we'll figure it out. And then David Grieco as Donovan and Benny Luciano as John. So to start our recap, we are in the school cafeteria, Corey and Sean sitting down to eat lunch, are talking about seven minutes in Heaven, and Corey is excited and Sean is talking about strategy. But Corey is doing lip upspups, practicing his kissing. So I couldn't believe we were already at this episode. I thought this was a season three episode as we talked about this when we had the previous basement scene. This is when I remember I got confused that we were already there, and I was like, oh, no, that's not till season three. But here we are. Here, we are, yeah, making out for seven minutes. Uh. Eric keeps walking by making fun of Corey's kissing eagerness and saying tick tick dick. Well, do you remember when you crossed by the first time, and you're going to I guess you're going to get a soda? Is that where you're doing over there? Do you remember what your after business was? Yeah, no I don't, but I I there was a lot of my my my line deliveries are getting a lot better. My walking acting is not what I seem to be. Just I'm always because in my head you can see I'm still going like end crossover to there and sit down, not at crossover from here and go sit down. No, you know what I thought about this episode? You are so skinny. Yeah, it was shocking to me. And I don't know what because it's likely be a week or two from the last episode, but for some reason, you look like you dropped like five pounds or something. We looks kind of unhealthy. I was in ultra skinny mode because I still had that whole thing in my head about being too too you know, heavy to it's I don't know, I just noticed it for you look really thin, yeah, super thin. Wait why was that in your head? Is that because you had had someone had a conversation with you? Yeah? That always kind of starts when you're you know, when you're you're younger, and again you know, I always kind of struggled with my weight. I put on weight so quickly that I, um, you know, I think that was in my head about that. So you also lose weight really quickly. I do. I also lose weight quickly as well. Yeah, so it's I mean I was thin. Yeah, I know, I was like, really it's intense. Yeah, I agree. So then a pretty new female teacher walks in and a nearby mister Turner asks mister Feeney, who Dad? Who? Dad? I remember this. I don't know why, because it was so Tony who did I know? I remember him doing all this stuff too, Like I remember, I don't remember this, but I remember the scene with him and Bill later. So I for some reason, I like really fixated on Bill's lines and that I almost knew I knew every line before a game, which I guess was just from watching it run through and loving the two of them being together. I don't know, great, remember I didn't remember this scene. Well, mister Michael Jacobs, that's like she she pretty like he would always do that kind of who pretty? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, that's my best friend. It's kind of similar, you know, Michael. Um, mister Phoeney explains that he hired Miss Tompkins as a replacement, and mister Turner loves that she's a miss, not a miss or a missus. And even though phoene says workplace where romance is frowned upon, he says, well, that's just a facial expression, which a great line. Yeah. Can I ask a quick question and it's it's truly just technical. What's the difference between miss and miss? Well, miss, as far as I'm aware, implies it could be a missus. I just don't want you to know. It's kind of like an in between. It's like it's the I think it also used to be something you would refer to an older woman who you didn't know whether or not she was married, So like you wouldn't like someone on the younger side you would call a miss unless you knew they were married. Then they'd be missus and somebody you're not sure about as a miss. Okay. I think miss was invented by feminists, like in the seventies or eighties as real as a response to, like, you know, taking the bonus off of whether whether a woman is married or not and to just have like a third term that's completely neutral for all women. Yeah, right right, And it's a good day because I learned something new there we go look that it's it's only nine fifteen in the morning. Already learned something. Already learn something. So Turner says he's going to go over and say hi, and then he says, how's my hair? And Phoenix is long? And then we're back at Sean and Corey. Corey is obsessed with the tick tick tick from Eric, so he runs over and sits with him. Eric is sitting alone, has no friends, has no one to talk to, by himself, just pushing food around in his place because he's not eating. I wanted to ask you about that push in the food. You ate one little green bean and they're just doing this with my fork, which bush Tony does as well. You noticed Tony's got the same We're just doing this the whole time, nobody. That's why we're also thin. It's because nobody's actually putting any food in our mouth unless you're a writer. Unless you're a writer. And then you shout exactly exactly. Eric says that Corey isn't ready for the makeout party tonight. What if she has braces or what if the casserole makes you fart, which is basically what he's trying to say. They didn't they didn't want to say it. They didn't want to say it out right, but that that's exactly the Beanie Wheenie cast role. Uh. And now Corey is just very stressed. And then we go to the makeout party where we're in another basement. They readecade. They took out all of the Paul Bunyan stuff and the other thing, because yeah, it was very very much the same set, but the other side. And now, writer, since you mentioned it on one of the other episodes, all I'm seeing is all the different sets that you walk downstairs because there's no I thought the same way. Yeah, when writer pointed that out, even though I know it, like as a director, like, oh great, there's no windows and stuff. But for some reason, writer saying it was like, now I'm going to notice it everywhere. The poetry reading is just chubby. It's chubby, it's Ubi. Yeah I thought it was supposed it's CHUBBIESI it's totally they just and so well redecorated though, because I I honestly was chubbies. I was like, why they think it's so funny. I totally bought it. I was like, just what a gorgeous set. I really loved it. No one, and I bet you no one. But the stairs are the same, though, aren't the exactly? Yes that they change the color of the wood. I probably would have put but they didn't. I think that looks like yeah. But I wonder if anybody gets that or I thought they did add something. I think to penga is holding something long and narrow and gold almost like it made They made it look a little like a spiral staircase. We should watch it again because maybe they I think they just threw like some draperies over it, just like beds, definitely, curtains, definitely beads, definitely all that stuff. But I specifically, I think they changed at least the landing at the bottom of the staircase, at least the landing. I think they may have added something, but because but I honestly thought it was supposed to be chubby. Me too. It looks so much like joy bring him to Chubbies for poetry read Night. Honestly. Producer Jensen Carr, husband of this podcast, said Chubbies. When we walked in and I was like, obviously not looks differently, It's it's a totally different set. So it's possible I'm just so ked into this show I am boring, So maybe everyone else is just not as committed as I am, and that's the problem. But Corey and Sean walk into the makeout party and Corey is stressing out over everything and vest in this scene. Jeez, I was very glad when I made the joke that I changed shirts, and the shirt I changed into it was so much better. But I was just like, this is an ugly, ugly look. You can talk about it with Sarah Markowitz coming up, Yes, I can't wait. So Sean says there were snacks and Corey says he doesn't want to eat the bean dip between the gas and his and his bad breath, he's not gonna want to kiss anybody. And then as soon as he's about to run out, Corey runs into t Pengga. They have a little awkward talk and Corey makes a run for the door again. Sean talks Corey down and says he's with Corey every second until Corey goes into that closet. And then, so how does this game work? Like? How are these names picked names in a hat. It's name in the hat, and you just one boy, one girl. You reach in, you pull out the thing and you there. Yep, you did. You did puck without pulling out anybody's name and without the closet. We just made out in the well. Other people made out in the basement while I went, hey, that looks fun. Um. So yeah, that's pretty much what it was what it was like for us, But there were sometimes some of there's sometimes closets involved or other rooms or that kind of stuff. But seven minutes in Heaven is a famous Yeah, I've heard of it before, but maybe only because of the show. But I don't, you know, I never played seven minutes. I don't know. It's just very famous, like kissing kind of game. I'm pretty sure I had heard of seven Minutes in Heaven before the show, But it is also possible that maybe this episode of Boy Meets World is where he learned about it. But I feel like it's a very famous thing that other people do. They do it in Teen Wolf too, I remember, yeah, yeah, like Style wraps him and pushed him in the her dress gets ripped because he has the close of a wolf before he turns well, Sean gets pulled into the closet with Melanie and Corey is now alone, and then there's a commercial break and we're back at the makeout party. Sean is seen coming out of the closet with Melanie, looking very satisfied and wearing a different shirt, and Sean says, Corey, the closet is your friend. So did she take off your shirt? Did you take off your shirt? I think it's just funny that, like, that's funny. You're just different. I'm just curious, I know, but I'm just curious as to where. Yeah, I don't think there's any I'm just just curious. So she got to second base right and I lost a beast of shirt and exactly then Corey's name gets selected and he's going into the closet with to Panga, and then there's a jump cut the world's largest wilderness store closet. It is a closet of people that just hike and fish and ski and play basketball and tennis. This is an active family. Yeah, well it's in their basement. It's where they keep all the stuff they don't use every weekend, but they need. That is a big basement. Closet, can I also ask? And I know where I'm I'm I'm probably reading too much into this and I this whole storyline, to me, would seem to work a lot better had it not been to Panga. Right, they've already made out twice twice? How is he so scared to kiss her now? Again? That didn't I did like this episode, but it felt kind of redundant to me. It just felt. Yeah, and also because it has so many echoes of the sleeping in the school episode. Wait right, you know, it's the same sort of issues about shame and public you know, publicly. I mean it's inverted, I guess because in this case he's shamed that he didn't do something and the other one he was proud that he But yeah, I just felt it felt like a repetitive episode. But it's Yeah, it's like paring off as the same thing where it's like, Okay, he's not ready to be in a couple. He's not we know, Corey's not ready for the sex stuff yet. Yeah, And again, I think a lot of this has to do with these were shows that were not yet written to Binge. Yeah, so when we're watching over and over and over again, you get the theme of Wow, it's kind of the same episode over and over, but when you have the week long break, absolutely it doesn't matter nearly as much. And a weird way, I think Boy Meets World rewatch would be better, Like if we did it randomly, do you know what I mean? If we just random shuffle for like, although I guess there isn't. I mean, I feel like there's like three or four episodes a season that are really tied together that really like create the art of the season, but in the middle, there's twenty some episode, there's twenty two episodes. They're just riffing on the same ideas and like, yeah, you know, even like the bully storylines, like we're just kind of seeing them repeat over and they're funny and they're good little bits, but they're not progressing, they're not changing. You know, it's not a bad episode, but that's all I was thinking. I was like, he's he's already made out with her and he grabbed her and was the aggressor last time, right, I know, I thought the same thing. I think if we look at it, like every episode is a little bit of a reset and and you know, you have to forget how many times have they kissed before? Because I completely agree with you. I also was like, oh, right, we're seeing this relationship progress a little bit. Like the last episode Band on the Run ended with the two of them about to dance. The episode before that was when he grabbed her and kissed her. So now it's like, oh, there's going to be a little bit of a start of a dating relationship. And yet I suspect that doesn't necessarily continue for the rest of season two, you know, like it's just going to be a brand new reset eventually. So did we skip the Wendy episode? Did I miss something? Wasn't that before? We have not skipped the one. It's gotta come back. I keep waiting for that, Like when is that? When the heck is that one coming out? I was sure it was like the fourth one or whatever, right after the last one she was on. You figured they would have done two in a row. Okay, So I didn't miss something. No, you didn't miss anything. So we're in the dark closet to Panga asks if Corey's okay because he hasn't even said anything, and Corey says, this is ridiculous, it's too dark. How can I kiss you if I can't even see you? So then Tepanga turns on the light and then Corey says, this is ridiculous. How am I supposed to kiss you with this blinding light in my face? Very funny, super cute, very funny. Topanga says Corey doesn't have to do anything he doesn't want to, and Corey says he's just trying to survive this and he can't work under pressure. So Topanga suggests that they just talk. I mean, by the way, yeah, this happened to me. I was absolutely in love, like the first girl I can remember having the most ridiculous crush on. Shout out to Shannon Shipley. Um, that's not her last name. Now she's married. I think it's something else but um and okay, exactly miss um. But she was like the cool girl in school and by seventh grade I got a chance to kind of date her, and I was too scared to kiss her, and she would kind of come and try to kiss me, and I'd kind of kiss her, but I was I was just really nervous. I was a late bloomer with all that kind of stuff. So this full on resonated with me. I mean again, it didn't make sense because it had already happened. Had this happened before the other episodes, it would have made more sense. But I was Corey, I fell on was just too air to kiss a girl. Super relatable episode, Yeah, very relatable episodes. Well that's why they that's why teenagers or kids create these games, right, it's to sort of force the issue, to get it over within a way, right, like you have to spin the bottle seven minutes and ever whatever you can, because because once you get it out of your system, like once you've done the thing, then hopefully there's you know, you can take the pressure off of it and like being forced to do it, like oh I had to kiss them in order to you know, play the game or whatever, and then it takes the onus off of like oh was it was it about really feeling or was it just because the bottle spun that way? You know, like it's it's it's important, it's like a ritual, you know, you sort of have to get it through. Yeah, but there's also this this this idea that all boys are fast, like we just want to do it all the time, do it, and some of us weren't. I mean, I was a very late bloomer. I just didn't have it in me to be that kind of I'm gonna kiss and it's gonna progress. I was scared of all this stuff. So I think I only because of games like this. I'm trying to remember what my first like actual kiss, kiss was, the lan it was, I mean, that's probably like thirteen or but I don't remember it, you know, because I had already done all this kiss friend, what it was probably your first kiss, probably my first girlfriend. Yeah, it must have been, but I don't remember it. You know. It was like I'd already been through all the first kisses, through you know, these kinds of things. Um, so I didn't feel I don't think I felt the pressure. I mean, very similarly, I don't remember my first kiss outside of what my first kiss was after Boy Meets World. Yeah, I can watch my first kiss. We've talked about it. And yet what was my first real life kiss, like real like don't know that one didn't that one did wasn't salient because I had already you know. Yeah, it's very very relatable. Yes, yeah, very relatable. But so they talk about a potential cover up plan for when they leave the closet to make people think that they made out, and Corey says he wants to be a tough man and a good kisser, and Tapenga says, well, the only way to get better at kissing is to practice, which is exactly what writer's points. And right when Corey goes in to kiss Tepanga, the door opens and it is clear that they have not kissed yet. There was a great holcomb. I don't know if you guys. Right when he sits down to talk to to vegas is Holm and I was like, oh my god, it's still there. Well, it wasn't as extreme as first season, but it was still. It's like Ben still saying it was so cute. There's still a hoomb Okay, great, I've missed it, but I'm happy to know it's still there. He missed it well. Then we are in Corey and Eric's bedroom. Amy walks in and slyly asks Corey if he kissed anyone tonight, but Alan tells Amy to leave Corey alone, that if he wants to have grandchildren, she can't talk to him like this, and then as soon as he kicks out Amy, he whispers he wants details later and he follows her out. Eric then comes in and asks what happened, and Corey tells him nothing happened. The only other guy who struck out had an asthma attack, which I thought was a funny Alvin, Poor Alvin, Alvin. I thought that was funny, though, But the answer to her, where are you the only person who didn't kiss? Well, Alvin not a rousing asthma dat, So he left. Uh uh, And despite trying as hard as not to, Eric starts laughing at Corey. That's a terrible, terrible fake laugh. My laughing was really bad in this and again I'm not I'm my delivery of the lines is definitely getting better. But the actually wrote down the same note, dude. I wrote down Will's laughs question mark because I was like, you, there's something. It was just doing it too much. You're you're just leaning into it. It's like before every line in the cafeteria scene, you were like, like, you know, and you just tell us kind of a nervous tickar. It was totally thank you. So I yes, all right, Well you feel vindicated. I can't say I cannot say I noticed. I did notice it a little bit in the kitchen later when they like when they tell you that you know, oh you're not in trouble, and you were like ha ha ied bed But I didn't notice it. I didn't notice it. Here, hokemb, you didn't notice it, poke hookemb, I don't know. We're in the school hallway now. At school, a bunch of guys laugh at Corey calling him the mayor using lipless Corey and Sean assumed that only those few guys know and it won't be a big deal. But then mister Turner with his amazing primary colors two great ties. Hi, Yeah, he comes in and this yeah so great where he just comes like, hey, Matthews, you know if he needs to talk, just it was so great, it so tony. He just took it so real to that melancholy plays. It was great. I know, it's so cute. So he comes over and he comforts Corey if he says, you know, I'm here if you ever need to talk to anybody. Sean tells Corey to deny everything, just like his uncle Ralph says again, oh rider, Yeah, in the background for the first time, your friend who was Spider Man or something had something to do with Spider Man or something Ricky. He just wanted to be Spider Man. Is that what it was, Ricky? I saw Ricky in the background for the first real walks behind you. Yeah, he walks behind you. I was like, Oh, that's the guy, that's my impress. Yeah he was. He was. He's a friend from We had done theater together when we were kids, so he was. He was our DM. He was our dungeon master when we played D and D when we were like Tanner eleven. He was older, and then he moved down to la because he was an actor, and then he moved down to la Um when he graduated high school. So he was Yeah, he was over eighteen. He's in a bunch of episodes. Yeah, tall thin. Oh my god, I have to go back. I didn't totally that was this early, but I guess. Yeah, we would have been living because he moved into it. We had a house in n Sino after I left the second season. Do you guys remember our house? And yeah, he used to commute and then Um and Ricky lived there for like six months or almost maybe the whole year. Did you get him the job as the background at like? Did you get him? That's how he got SAG he got into SAG. We did that a couple of times. It was we helped him get a SAG card. And then um Shiloh's girlfriend Darcy when she when she came in, was an extra for like the last season a boyment towards, so she also got her SAG card. Darcy was an extra on Boy Yeah for a while. Yeah, she's a guy ever knew? Oh my god? Here? Oh wow? Yeah, so he's there. That's reckon fun. So then Tapanga is nearby with her friends telling everyone, telling everyone Corey is not a freak just because he didn't kiss her. He is different and a nice boy. You're not helping, helping, And I couldn't tell if I still have a cold or if I just talk in my nose. And it reminded me that Michael used to tell me all the time to lower my register, lower your register, don't talk up here, lower lower it. And he would tell me like I'll, I'll think of all the famous actresses, none of them have high nasily voices. None of them have high nasly voices. And I couldn't hear it in myself, but boy, when I watch it now, I hear Michael in my head and I think you register, Danielle, lower your register, you're in your nose. Didn't bother me. I think, being like super aggressively protective of him, and I know it is so cute. Yea, it is so cute. He's differ a nice boy. And then we're in the school cafeteria, Harley with his little gangs. It's next to Corey to share an inspirational thought. I cried because I had no shoes until I met a boy who had no lips. And then Blake gets one of his little mini monologues that he was talking about when he's on the show, and he just starts riffing about how funny the joke was, and he's gonna tell his grandchildren, or then if he doesn't have any grandchildren, he's gonna have to tell some strange children. They're gonna be in the park. It's it's so well And the only thing I wrote down was in his own head. Why is he all of a sudden in a raincoat. It's crazy. It's like the creepy guy at the turned himself into the creepy guy at the playout. It's so good. I would I would watch the Joey the Rat Show I would too. They should have given him a spin off. They should have shower absolutely, yes, I agree, Yep, it would have been great. I bet you if our show had been on Disney Channel or Nickelodeon, that would have happened. It would have. But the fact that we were a network show, you know, they just wasn't that kind of opportunity. But like, if we were on a cable show, they would have given them their own spin off because they were that that great out of the gate and all three of them. You just want to watch them do anything. Yeah, so fun. Well, it's it's what they do for the rest of the day when they're not bullying the kids at school. It's because you never see them and they talk about that they're not in class, right, so it's like, what are their days, Like, they're writing poetry, they're doing that. I mean, there's it'd be hysterical. Yeah, man, we've got a lot to do when we build that time machine. Thought to do? First build the time machine, that's right, Yeah, it's always simple, damn it. And then you should see the list after that. After this, So, Corey asks Harley why he even cares about him being able to kiss and Harley says, they're his seventh they're his seventh graders on his little aunt farm. He watches them live their life. I thought that was such a funny little I don't know, it's just such a funny little way of describe how he thinks of them. And it's perfect. Yeah, it's perfect. When I when I hear one of my little aunts is getting his legs ripped off, I have to go watch it. If you don't watch it, Yeah, I mean, this is this is a great example of like there's they have no purpose in this episode, right, Like these guys do not belong here, but they just are funny and they just needed to put them in. And then you have to rationalize why you put them in, So you end up with this really funny yea description that makes perfect sense and like the audience wants it, We're fine with it, but it has no story bearing whatsoever. Yeah, you could easily take them out of this episode and nothing. But then they come back in the poetry reading wonderfully. There's just they add extra flavor there and then they just went away. It was so strange to me. Then they just went away. So there was such an important part of the show. Yeah, very strange. So at a nearby table, mister Feeney asks miss Tompkins if she's feeling welcome her first week, and she wants to know about missed a Turner he asked her out, and she wants to make sure he isn't an ax murderer, and Phoene kind of vouches for him. So I thought it first. It's a little funny scene. I remember so many beats, and it's just I just love watching Bill in different contexts, you know, like whenever he's slightly on edge or stressed out or trying to like cover or lie in this case, like, you know, I just love it. I just love Yeah. Bill is just amazing. He's a what an actor, and like we had a way to be able to like hit these jokes and you clearly know that he wants to, you know, make her not like him by saying good, nice things about it. It's just so clever and it's so great. I know, it's so funny too. And my favor I actually my favorite scene is when he when he's sitting down with Turner and he wants the details and he's like, come on, man, it's so good. The start of that scene made no sense, but the rest of it was amazing, really well, because he says, you know, hey, have a seat and you go get it. Yeah, we'll get get we'll get to it. We're going ahead of you're getting sorry. She has an amazing one of those bullet tie. Yeah, super popular early nineties. I feel like everybody would like rediscover the Southwestern bullet tie. Yeah. She had a little Southwestern flared in her all the way through her out, like somebody went, we're making you from Arizona, Like exactly, sure you've been to Sedona. Yeah, right, let's do that. So it seems the data is on between miss Tompkins and mister Turner. And then we are in the Matthews kitchen. Corey says he's never going back to school again. You could try and stop me if you want, and Amy just says all right, And then they shift their focus. You didn't say Lily's there? Yeah, I know, And then they shift their focus to Lily welcome back. She's there, So she is back on the show. She's not back, she has not gone. This is scene where she's punching her little stuffed animal. Oh yeah, if this is a scene, she's just sitting there. Beauties, she's talking out the paste cup. Do you remember like actively punching her little stuffed animal over and over again? Perception boy not pick up on They did not. I did not even see that. And that is a telltale sign of sociopathy. It's just nervous Habit has just clearly something to do with their heads. But it's pretty I was like, oh, Lily, oh well. Amy and Allen shift their focus to Morgan and another student. She's telling a story about another student taking her paste cup. Corey interrupts and says his entire high school career crashed and burned and they would rather talk about Morgan's paste, So Alan asks if he'd like to talk about it now, and Corey tells them about freezing up at the party. Amy says first parties with girls are always awkward, and he says, no, this wasn't awkward. Losing your gym shorts while climbing the rope. That's awkward and burns and burns. Corey says this was beyond humiliation and calls it a gouba. I remember this. I remember, I remember the word the sound. I remember I spelled it ag o o b wa there's an h oh, there's an h b wa h. I know that because I was watching with the subtitles. Of course, of course, of course. Yeah. Um, Corey says Eric told him he would joke, and then he leaves. Eric then walks in laughing, and Amy asks what he said to Corey before the party, and he admits he told Corey how scary kissing is. This is where I thought the laughter was a little it's all too much. I laughed the whole episode with no friends. I was just by myself laughing. You're kind of you don't have much motivation in this, I mean, yeah, just just to be mean. Yeah, and that's not that interesting. Like the writing kind of didn't bolster you enough. Like it would have been nice if you had a reason, like maybe you had been embarrassed by your first kiss and so you were like overcompensate it in or I don't know, Like it would have been really easy to give it more meaning. But instead it's it's almost like like like we talked about playing angry, you know, you're just kind of playing mean this whole episode, and it's agree you can do that for a scene, but to have to do that for a whole episode is not that interesting. It Also, by the way, would have been much more interesting to have him accidentally freak Corey out to be like, for him to be like, okay, listen, just you know it's gonna be You're gonna feel weird. You're not going to know what to do with your hands. Also, there's a possibility she might have braces. It's for him to almost be trying to help him, but that worse much more to make it worse, that's much more interesting. But whatever, its top step one, build the time machine. Time machine. Also, I definitely think that there are where we think about this from a like a what's more interesting writing wise or production wise and character wise versus what truthfully is most teenage older brother like. And the reality is an older teenage brother is probably constantly trying to poke at and mess with his little brother and a super interested in girls. So you know, we can get we can critique it, but the truth is, this is probably what's probably going on in most households. I agree. Um So Alan and Amy punish Eric by saying he can't go out until Corey is ready to go out again, which is very smart, and Eric says he's so cute to stay home. That would become a meme. Real, Yeah, that's like that's one of those some people will send me that a Jeff. That was Jeff. Yeah, jeez, wow, I thought it was cute. And your hair looks fantastic. Thinks fantastic. Yeah, and then you mean, I mean now too Too's always always looks great. Free by Daniel Fisher, Thank you Will. We're in the school cafeteria. Corey is sitting by himself and tells Eric to join him. Corey says he's planning out his life as a nice boy. Eric says Corey needs to get out and date again real soon, because Corey's pain is his pain. He needs to get back out their man. Eric says he just needs the training wheels on a little longer, so he'll chaperone Cory on his date, but Corey says no one is talking to him but Sean and to Penga. And then even though Eric suggests Sean, Corey brings up to Penga, to which Eric says, you animal, that's great. It was. You also noticed the parallel that they tried to do, which I think they actually did kind of well, which is training when well not just that. But when even when you get older with the older female character, she's still after the bad boy. Oh it's you know, you still got the nice guy. And so it's like, oh, hopefully they'll grow out of this, but it's like, no, she's still over at that table. I didn't think. I didn't think about that. Yes, I actually, yeah, I thought about it when she says that when she's like, is he a nice guy or is he like a rebel? And then she goes yes, But I didn't actually even connect it to the fact that Corey then has that to point too of like not guy whatever. Yeah, it's it's how it is. And it led to a whole conversation with Sue last night about like, why are women attracted to the bad boys? Right right? It's like they wanted It's funny though, I was just having the conversation with my wife that that that isn't true so much anymore, Like I think, okay, like I feel like that is your twenties and thirties maybe, but by the forties women are way not, way uninterested. Yeah exactly, yeah exactly. I mean you would hope. So again, a lot of people don't necessarily ever learn the lesson of their twenties and thirties and keep repeating the same mistakes over and over in the same pattern. But if you are the type of person to go, you know things aren't going the way I want them to, I should reevaluate. Then. Yes, by the time you become very serious about looking for a life partner, you are not looking for the rebel bad boy. You are looking for the nice guy because you will consistently be there for you. Yes, um, but yes, there is that time period where we win in the end, In the end, that's exactly right. So then we are in the coffee shop poetry place that's definitely not Chubby coffee. I even had a name in the script, not Chubbies. It's called not Chubbies Coffee, the not Chubbies coffee House. Yeah, because we never shot for the Jubbies, right, we never say the name of this place. But it's just the coffee. And I was looking for a sign. I didn't see a sign. It's just like the coffee. Can we just take a moment and appreciate places like this that existed in the nineties that don't exist anymore. I loved coffee shops, Yeah, I loved old, dirty couches like this. This was These were my havens. This is where I spent all of my adolescence when I was not shooting. Boy Meets World don't exist anymore. It's not true. Writer, I brought you to a place called Juicy Ladies in the valley. You will and Trina went and had lunch at Juicy Ladies. We sat outside. But if you are like a diner, that's like a restaurant. I want the couches I want. They have that we just didn't. Side around the corner. They've got big couches and and a low table and pillows for sitting on the floor, and and it's got a like an espresso bar. But then it also has outdoor tables poetry readings. They don't. But they have art on the walls that's done by local artists that you can buy. They have genes that have been distressed and painted by local artists. And then it's it is a little too bright for you though it's not. You can see almost. I need my basement. I needed to be a basement. Yeah, I know, I'll work on it for no I you know. Actually I had mentioned coffeecats in Sebastopol, where I grew up, and somebody from Sebastopol emailed us to say it's closed. Oh it's because of all the horrible kids that used to hang out there clientele. Yeah, jeez, all the hacky sacks. By the way, the cap boosey knew where. He says that for the cap we called it that, all of us for like all seven years. A boy, don't you remember that? I don't remember that. Oh yeah, we would. We would go to one of your favorite coffee shops. I guess somebody get a cap booth, no cat bousino, do that forever? Yep. So we're inside the coffee shop. It appears Eric has taken Corey and Topenga to a very cool coffee shop where they read poetry. Here, Corey says they have a cap capnocino, and Topanga orders a double decafelette with skim milk, and then he leaves her. Yeah, I remember that barista. By the way, do you remember that extra barista? No? No, I remember that guy like the with the hair all too. I mean I remember the second he came on the screen. It's like, oh, that guy like he was every time we did anything remotely hippie coffee shop. It was always it was that guy. He worked at every one of those jobs. Yeah, that's awesome. Well, he leaves Topanga to apparently buy her own coffee. He says he's going to go find a place to sit, and then here he is. Frankie gets on stage to read a poem and dedicates to his friends who want to remain anonymous, it's so awesome. And then Joey compliments Frankie on his poem and says it was really good. Corey asks Harley if he goes to poetry readings, and he asks Corey if he thinks he's a sensitive guy, and he says, because I could slap you around for that. So he's upset by the idea that somebody would think he's insensitive. And then Tapengga comes over with two lattes, one for herself and one for Corey, and she says, here, sit here, So she also finds the place to sit. Yea pays for the coffee coffees, brings him over, cryds a place to sit. Corey's a real lump on a log here straight up nineties giant overside coffee, oversized coffee, coffe Oh enormous, huge, just giving a twelve and thirteen year olds nine thousand times the caffeine you're supposed to have in a day in one cup, Oh the nineties coffee. Corey says he likes this place and Topanga asks if it's because it's not a closet, and Corey says, girls have it so easy, but Tepengga says everyone was nervous and girls don't know what they're doing either. Topengga says, well, too bad, we missed our chance. And then Donovan is introduced and does a poem called the Produce Section, and now everyone is making out, which is just a weird time for everyone to get moved. It's so bizarre theaches that his words alone just put everybody in the mood. That is so fun because he's talking about cling peaches. I know, peaches are apparently a sexy fruit. Yeah, very sensual. I have a kind of funny story that relates to this in a lot of ways. Randomly, I I on Instagram or Twitter or both, Like this was like five years ago. I put out a poem about peaches that is awesome and I don't have to look up what it is. But it was an amazing poem that I loved, and I and it's about tasting peaches, like you know, going out to a farm and picking peaches and tasting and how great they were. And Michael Jacobs emailed me and said, geez, just sometimes it's just a peach or he like made fun of me. And then to see this episode, I was like, butt, did you realize you wrote a show where that is exactly what happened? And I don't know if he was self aware about it, like making fun of it, but like, but I didn't remember this, but I literally had to put out a palm but peaches on in the world, and Michael Jakos made fun of before it, so here it was in his own cho jeez. Well, you know, I think that's all based on a Buddhist concept. I think it's the I believe it's a Buddhist concept or Daoist that it's are you eating are you are you truly eating a peach or just merely consuming it, because there's the whole levels of enjoy it's essentially about enjoying life, and you're enjoying the eating of the peach. And I think that's a Buddhist concept I can't remember, but it was all about Peaches, so I wonder if the poem is related to that. So, yeah, Peaches who knew amctual fruit boy boy. I also do think though, that Donovan because we see him later. He comes back in the tag and it's it's like he's purposefully doing it, like he knows that's his stick, because he also turns the lights off so like the lights get dim. I think he's got like a sensual voice. So I don't know. It's like some eighties nineties R and B starts playing and people are just getting it on. I've been really trying. Baby, there you go. Absolutely, So Corey looks over at to Panga and we start to kiss. Boom. But you wonder where I got the idea that stage kissing is just putting your lips together and moving your heads. We just put our lips together and then didn't move. Is that is that what it was? So because you block it out, so my head comes forward and we just I don't even remember what the kiss felt like, but we literally just like our lips touch and then we just just stay there. I know there's no movement. Seven minutes in Uncomfortability, Yeah, at least thirty seconds of I'm just like the end of an episode, at the end of a beat like this. We've seen this so many times now, Like you guys have dancing, looking at each other, kissing each other. It did feel like a little yeah, okay, we're still doing this. Yeah, but I guess it comes work, right. It's like, yeah, they're more like comic strips in a way, they can just sort of exist in their own continuity, where like you repeat similar motifs over and over visuals and yeah, well but that also lends to exactly what you're saying, which is why it's so glaring when there is a three or four episode arc, right, because it's almost like a show within a show. Oh we're we're doing something that matters for three or four episodes, as opposed to just these constant one offs. Yeah right, So yeah, well, we're back in the school cafeteria. Mister Feenie calls over mister Turner to sit down, and he asks how he's doing. He wants the info about his hot date with Miss Tompkins. This is the part that threw me because it starts with him going mister Turner comes sit with me and he says, you really you want me to sit with you. They're sitting together every episode, I know, four seasons, four scenes ago, they were sitting together having lunch. So the fact that he's thrown by, wait a minute, you're inviting me to sit down and talk to you. You were here do Here's what I'll say, is a little different. Usually I do think that we see mister Turner come to sit with mister Feeney, and mister Feenie has a little bit of an air of like, oh you are right, yeah, And this time mister Turner is going to give foene a space, and mister Feeney's like, Jonathan, come here, come here. So it is to me it felt a little different. It felt more like what you want me to stay with you, as opposed to I normally invite myself. I guess I just five. But I see I see your point. I see your point. They're all we always see them together, They're always be at the table. But I do think it's that maybe this is the first time mister Feeney has done it's excitement. I think it's get excitement that you're just like what I found the poem it's called from Blossoms and it's by Lee Young Lee. I'm really good mom. If anybody peaches, if anyone's a good poemp, have your have your significant other with you, because you're gonna want to make out. Oh man. After paget so, Pheny wants the scoop, and then Miss Tompkins interrupts them and comes over to say see you tonight, my guy, which I think is pretty cute, and mister Turner says, I like her, I like her, I like her. At another table, Corey tell Sean he's so into poetry now, poetry now, he may even become a poet himself. Corey is visibly happy that they made out, and Topanga with Friends comes over and says hi to Corey, and they're flirting, and even though it's a short little section of the scene, it's very palpable that they have a little flirting thing going on. I have to tell you, I you know, as we all know, we've said it a million times. I have not seen these episodes since they aired in the nineties, and all this time when people tell me over the years how much they love Corey in t Penga's relationship and how much how cute it is and how much it means to them, and that they call each other Corey and Tepenga when they find their significant other and whatever. There's always been a part of me that has felt like, huh, I wonder why, because so much of what I remember about their relationship are the later seasons where conflict and also a lot of um feeling like Topanga is annoyed with him all the time, like she's nagging him or she's you know that she's like frustrated by him and he's constantly trying to get something from her and she's like a man and so what a lot of what has stuck in my head about their relationship is kind of like not super aspirational. Seeing this and seeing how excited Tapega is by Corey and seeing her be so into him. I was like, this is so cute. It is it's a sweet it's really starting to yeah, and I think what the whole first three seasons are, you know, And I think that we you're forgetting the sort of scaffolding that was built, you know, that the base of like this love that was so you know, idealized and perfect and also just it's I think it's so well established. And I also just I just love that that, you know, we haven't had episodes with like a Wendy or other like it's it's like Topanga's is is more important than other girls? Do you know what I mean? Like Corey's gonna date other girls and whatnot. But there's something about this. It's just you know, that sort of destiny storytelling. It's great. It's great. Yeah, it's really And I love that Eric and sitting with Sewan and Corey like we're all together for the first time in the cafeteria. Yeah, I know, I saw that you were in the death chairs. Yeah, oh god, oh my god, I'd go he's gonna start calling and calling and calling, oh my god on a rotary phone. Well, we're back in the cool coffee shop that's not Chubbies, let's call it Nubbies. And Donovan is back on stage doing a poem called the Canned Foodial and apparently he gets very creative in the market. Uh. And then we panned a reveal that Corey's there with Topanga. Eric is there, Sean is there with a date. Mister Turner and Miss Tompkins are there just staring at each other. Do you guys know what Riz is? Have you heard of Riz non a member of the Wu Tang clan? Oh? Rizza? Wow? Okay, I was close. Thank you, I'm sorry. I'm sorry we stopped down. Unbelievable. Yes can you name the other nine members? Old dirty bastard method man? Oh there is Jizza one of them? Yes, yes, that's I think that's where I am. I'm impressed. I knew that more I'm in four out of nine? Is okay? Real? Good? Okay? Man? I said method Man? Oh you did? Okay? I did? That was when for? I said, an old odb odb You got it? Um, there's the chef the what's is that one? Yeah? Okay okay? Wow uh inspected deck ray Kwanda chef okay? Um? Who else? Um? You god? Oh wow okay ghost face killer, ghost face killer? Okay, you got to be impressed. I got four. I mean, that's what I'm saying to I said, nothing are we talking about? Okay? So what is Riz? Okay? So Riz? It makes sense that we wouldn't know it, guys because we are old. But the youngs are using this word riz. It's kind of short for charisma, but it's like it's really short for real short for charisma. Chrismas a long, long word. It's a long word. No one wants to say it, but it's really like about when someone is like has a lot of pull, like to to get somebody interested in them, like just you know, yeah, but it's too long, writer long. We are the gen of the breeves. Do you remember saying that when we were kids, like come on, guys like bay, Like we couldn't even say the word babe anymore. It was like many bees. Anyway, mister Turner's got the riz in this episode. He's looking for the way they are looking at each other. Yeah. Yeah, it was like just I don't even know, so sexy. And then there's Alan and Amy and even mister Feeney just coffee likes he having no you know, he's critiquing the poem in his head, which is where I went with it. It was brilliant, for sure, and that is the end of our episode. I thought it was a very cute episode. I'm not really sure. A whole lot happens and it and it's a little repetitive, but you know what, if you just assume each episode is going to feel a rest at least for right now, Uh, it was. It's standing on its own merits yeah, huge, almost like these scenes exist better on their own, Like you could just take each little scene and you'll remember it, like you'll remember the seven minutes in Heaven and the good conversation, the quorin to bang. But like as an episode, it doesn't really all come together. Commun artist saying, yeah, it's just kind of like, but fine, good episode, twenty totally fun, twenty two minutes.
