[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the Forty K-Lorecast. [SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to Forty K-Lorecast with me, John Barside and Brett Chester. [SPEAKER_00]: This guy. [SPEAKER_00]: On today's cast, we're going to dive deep into a topic that will dominate a lot of our future cast, the Crusades of the Imperium, with the breakdown of what they're meant to be, what they really are. [SPEAKER_00]: Today, we're not going to dive, for example, deep into the Damikli's Crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: The idea here is to give you guys an idea of what the Crusades are and a lot of the kind of way GW talks about them. [SPEAKER_00]: But as always, the Forty-K-Lorecasts, a weekly show, focused on the lower the Forty-K universe, releasing every Monday at seven p.m. [SPEAKER_00]: Eastern. [SPEAKER_00]: Please follow and comment in the cast. [SPEAKER_00]: It really helps the algorithm. [SPEAKER_00]: It's pushing us out even more listeners. [SPEAKER_00]: We're currently the number one lower cast globally. [SPEAKER_00]: And that's thanks to all of you making the comments and sharing. [SPEAKER_00]: So thank you so much. [SPEAKER_00]: If you like the cast, I'm going to hear more of a Brad and I click on the notes and you'll see a link to our YouTube page, the Forty-K-Lurcast. [SPEAKER_00]: There you'll find old versions of the show converted to imagery with subtitles, our live Q&A sessions, and our two other shows, the history of Forty-K with Brad myself and a guest, and Brad's other show, two old men in their handler, discussing where the competitive side of Warhammer. [SPEAKER_00]: We also have a link in our notes to our Patreon. [SPEAKER_00]: Massive, thank you to everyone who's contributed already. [SPEAKER_00]: As you can see, we've done a lot with it by improving our audio, expanding into YouTube, and some more projects coming down the pipe. [SPEAKER_00]: For those who want to support us, you can actually get the show ad free by signing up for our Patreon. [SPEAKER_00]: It's four dollars and nine nine cents US, or eight hundred and eighty six point eight two jibooten francs for all of our listeners in jibooty. [SPEAKER_00]: Like you know, just want to be global. [SPEAKER_00]: Lastly, in this show notes is a link to our discord. [SPEAKER_00]: For people who want to interact around Forty Kay, it's really the best option. [SPEAKER_00]: I think out there, it's got lore, it's got show discussion, fan theories, video games, tabletop play, really anything and everything around the game, pictures of Brad's high school milit. [SPEAKER_00]: That's also in there. [SPEAKER_00]: Also, people's pets and workouts. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a bunch of stuff. [SPEAKER_00]: Big thank you to our moderators. [SPEAKER_00]: You're doing a great job of making the discord easy to navigate despite they're being almost nine thousand members and lots of channels. [SPEAKER_00]: It's very easy to get through. [SPEAKER_00]: Finally, you're looking for ask questions and get them answered. [SPEAKER_00]: So, huge thank you to them for that. [SPEAKER_00]: With that, onto the cast. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's start today with what is a crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: So a crusade in Forty Kays, any large-scale military maneuver that the Imperium takes part in. [SPEAKER_00]: It's obviously rooted in terms with the emperor, because all the crusades are drawn back in kind of influence to the great crusade of the emperor of mankind. [SPEAKER_00]: They're all designed and theory to further the reaches of mankind, by bringing one portion or another of the galaxy to heal. [SPEAKER_01]: Let me bounce on this real quick. [SPEAKER_01]: Say that one more time and let me jump on it. [SPEAKER_00]: But all the Crusades are designed to further the reaches of mankind by bringing one portion or another at the galaxy to heal. [SPEAKER_00]: The Crusades can target an ever-wider reach of needs. [SPEAKER_00]: It could be something as simple as conquering new planets and systems. [SPEAKER_00]: It can be reclaiming lost worlds and systems to rebellion, reclaiming lost worlds and to heresy. [SPEAKER_00]: Purging Zenos really anything. [SPEAKER_00]: And that kind of is the problem for the main subject of our cast because on their face, the crusades are all in noble endeavor. [SPEAKER_00]: The Imperium come together to fight the foe and improve the lot of mankind. [SPEAKER_01]: But there also, some of the reason that they can be bad is sometimes there's just a chapter reclaiming. [SPEAKER_01]: It's on it reclaiming vengeance on someone. [SPEAKER_01]: But basically, sometimes it's just retribution. [SPEAKER_01]: They're, we're going to get back. [SPEAKER_01]: Think about it. [SPEAKER_01]: We had Crusades right after the Horace, Heresy, and they did kind of just be awful because it was just us striking back at Cape Osер instance. [SPEAKER_01]: We did a whole thing on the Black Templars on it. [SPEAKER_01]: Black Templars had some good Crusades. [SPEAKER_01]: They have some bad Crusades. [SPEAKER_01]: But all those Crusades were drawn from regaining lost honor. [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's the main [SPEAKER_00]: kind of overarching of this episode is the Crusades, like the Crusades of the Middle Ages, the truth behind them is a lot darker than the stories told about them. [SPEAKER_00]: So let's get into this, the good, the bad, and some of the downright awful about it. [SPEAKER_00]: So first things first, we talk about the bureaucracades, is how one comes to pass. [SPEAKER_00]: As with all things in Perium, there are rules. [SPEAKER_00]: They don't always get followed, but there are rules. [SPEAKER_00]: According to the Imperium, a crusade can only be called for an authorized by the Lords of Terror. [SPEAKER_00]: And this is because the crusades traditionally will involve the interworking of numerous branches of the Imperium, Navy, Guard, Adnex, Basement, Sisters, and more. [SPEAKER_00]: And in order to get these groups to work, they also need the forces of the navigators, they've been destroyed, the Ecclesiarchy, and more. [SPEAKER_00]: So the act of declaring a crusade will impact numerous factions. [SPEAKER_00]: And without orders coming from the Lords of Terra, a lot of those factions would just say no. [SPEAKER_00]: And so the crusade will never start. [SPEAKER_00]: You're going to get, don't forget, anytime you declare a crusade, it's not a, hey, let's go over here and occupy this planet that has nothing on it and there's no resistance. [SPEAKER_00]: Every crusade is going to result in a lot of death. [SPEAKER_00]: And so every group has to go to it, has to either agree to it, or have it agreed that they're going. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, the same way they were saying, did not bother to ask the learns of terror, Bobby J. [SPEAKER_00]: Also, space wolves a bunch of times. [SPEAKER_01]: Actually, all of the imperial, every imperial fifth successor. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: That's why I would laugh at it. [SPEAKER_00]: That was the rule, but all the time, these things just happen without them. [SPEAKER_00]: We have numerous stories of heck, even the Ecclesiarchy will declare a crusade and just go and everyone goes, oh, okay. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, I do, I have an opinion on this though, and I view it as more of a scenario. [SPEAKER_00]: I think what happens more often is groups like, for example, the crimson fists. [SPEAKER_00]: will decide to go on a crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: And the lords of terror will find out about this, and they're left with kind of an awkward choice. [SPEAKER_00]: They can either oppose the crusade and say, no, you know, not to go, but then they can end up like the lords of terror we discussed during the war of the beast when the crimson vists come back to Terran and say, why did you say no? [SPEAKER_00]: or more likely what I think they do is they agree with them tacitly. [SPEAKER_00]: And so this way, the words of Terracite, oh yeah, you could have your crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: And if the crusade's successful, the lords of Terracate all the glory of like, hey, look at me. [SPEAKER_00]: We reclaim more of the galaxy under my watch. [SPEAKER_00]: But if it fails, they just say, it was a terrible idea. [SPEAKER_00]: The crimson festival had it on their own. [SPEAKER_00]: Whatever. [SPEAKER_00]: In classic politics. [SPEAKER_01]: If they go back into the Ecclesiarchy, Declan Crusades, there's super enough, and they can do about that. [SPEAKER_01]: Because, and what we will talk about in a future cast, is how much bigger and more powerful the Ecclesiarchy has gotten in modern forty-k. [SPEAKER_01]: because if they try to say something bad about the Ecclesiarchy, you know, the thing that's basically keeping the entire imperial together right now, you're exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: You're like, hey, what's the most popular thing? [SPEAKER_01]: Worship of the Emperor? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, let's just not touch that with a thousand foot ball. [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, once Crusade has been declared, it will continue on until one of really three things occurs. [SPEAKER_00]: One, they achieve the goal and they set up for initially, so all the Xenos are dead, the systems are reclaimed, the rebellious governors are all executed very publicly, whatever needs to be done. [SPEAKER_00]: second option, which does come up quite often is the lords of terror just declare that the crusade is completed. [SPEAKER_00]: This one comes up a lot. [SPEAKER_01]: I was just about to say this comes up a lot. [SPEAKER_01]: The one, I hate saying good things about the lords of terror, they are pretty good at stopping your crusade by just declaring that they won. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's the best way. [SPEAKER_01]: That's, they can't stop Crusades because, well, they can, but it always leads badly. [SPEAKER_01]: But this is the best way they do. [SPEAKER_01]: Stop a Crusade is just go, congratulations, John. [SPEAKER_01]: You've achieved everything that you need to do achieve. [SPEAKER_01]: We're throwing a party for you and you're like, but I was gonna do other stuff and they kind of lose momentum. [SPEAKER_01]: They lose their rides a lot of times. [SPEAKER_01]: Everything else. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, yeah, I kind of compare it to if you have ever gone to the gym and you've set out to do an hour in the treadmill. [SPEAKER_00]: And then at minute forty, you convince yourself, that's as close to, and that's effectively as good as an hour and just get off the treadmill. [SPEAKER_00]: That's what the lords of terror do. [SPEAKER_00]: They either get bored of the crusade or they see it bogging down and see a potential problem where this is just going to, the efforts not going to be worth the reward. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, there are some funny stories around that. [SPEAKER_00]: Like we covered during the Black Templar cast that been a dickding crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: where the Kleezyarchy halfway through said, oh, we've succeeded in our goal. [SPEAKER_00]: And the Black Templars went, we haven't and finished the job killing every Zeno in the sector. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't. [SPEAKER_01]: Is anyone ever want an argument with the Black Templars? [SPEAKER_01]: Because they're pretty set. [SPEAKER_01]: Even if they're wildly wrong. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, Corland did when he punched what's his nuts in the face, knocked him into the ground. [SPEAKER_01]: Sorry. [SPEAKER_01]: He wasn't giving you. [SPEAKER_00]: I feel very confident that's the only way to win an argument with the Black Templars. [SPEAKER_00]: It's just what if I just physically stop you? [SPEAKER_00]: Speaking of, that is the one other way that Crusades end is, they fail. [SPEAKER_00]: Everyone dies. [SPEAKER_00]: This do happen, and this is always the fault of the local commander, never the fault of the lords of terror. [SPEAKER_00]: A key part though, the last key part I want to cover though, is when a Crusade is declared, it comes with a full authority of the Imperium and the Emperor himself. [SPEAKER_00]: This is important we talk about these things, because refusing to take part in a Crusade is tantamount to heresy. [SPEAKER_01]: It's a tantamount to her seat. [SPEAKER_01]: It is heresy. [SPEAKER_01]: You can. [SPEAKER_01]: You can't even talk bad about it. [SPEAKER_01]: Better fact, if you get a full crusade, and you say that you haven't achieved objectives that are supposedly already achieved, they'll also show you on that. [SPEAKER_01]: That's one percent heresy. [SPEAKER_00]: And this is where the lords of terror can use a crusade for some pretty nefarious purposes. [SPEAKER_00]: They can declare a crusade and then declare that you are part of the crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: And he says that. [SPEAKER_00]: What makes this even nastier is the crusades are a really fervent disposition in general. [SPEAKER_00]: They're viewed by the populace of the imperium as a critical and holy thing. [SPEAKER_00]: So to a regular citizen, every crusade must be well thought out planned and meticulously executed event. [SPEAKER_00]: Not this random whim that they often go off on. [SPEAKER_00]: And what makes us worse is the power and authority behind them means that this can be used really nefariously because the citizen read themselves and talking more specifically here guard regiments. [SPEAKER_00]: don't know that they're being sent off to a wood shipper. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, also to either be killed because you're one of the lords of tears, enemy, or being sent to kill a lords of terror enemy. [SPEAKER_01]: And this has happened multiple times in these crusades. [SPEAKER_01]: They suck. [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, but let's talk before we get into the crusade that I do want to talk, I think a little left turn here back to what we were covering a few casts to go, the fists. [SPEAKER_00]: Because as we discussed in our coverage of the fists, and then the Black Templar, all of the fist chapters are on crusades, but it's not really the same term. [SPEAKER_00]: Because a Black Templar, for example, had been raging the great crusade, part two, electric boogaloo. [SPEAKER_00]: for, yes, for nine thousand years. [SPEAKER_00]: But it's not really a crusade that they've taken part of. [SPEAKER_00]: They've just been crusading for nine thousand years. [SPEAKER_01]: Although you this though, because they're, they are crusading, but the crusade is their purpose in existing as chapters a chapter. [SPEAKER_01]: period. [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I just my point is I think when we just use a term crusade for the Imperium, it usually is a set thing. [SPEAKER_00]: We're going to go, this is we're doing in the Macarious Crusade, the Adomeness Crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: They have a purpose, whereas the Black Templars Crusade is we will conquer the galaxy. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a little bit broad. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think when I look read the black template and the fists, it makes me think more about the fictional writing about the Crusades in the Middle Ages where knights were, it wasn't true by the way. [SPEAKER_00]: But the idea was that knights were completely obsessed with reclaiming the Holylands and they would never stop fighting or crusading till it was done. [SPEAKER_00]: Except for Sir Robin, because he wasn't really an individual, and then Sir Gallahad. [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you, meant to say, the brave Sir Robin, thank you very much. [SPEAKER_00]: No, the not so brave, and not so pure Sir Robin. [SPEAKER_00]: Sir Gallahad ran you a little bit of a distraction, but Lancelot was all in. [SPEAKER_00]: Bed of ear was a bit mad, and Arthur eventually realized the whole thing was silly. [SPEAKER_00]: black to the back Templars. [SPEAKER_00]: The black Templar wants different because they're just never resting after success. [SPEAKER_00]: And so they just hurled themselves into the next engagement. [SPEAKER_00]: And their viewpoints were not going to stop until a galaxy's tamed. [SPEAKER_00]: So in this end, black Templars effectively take part in dozens, maybe over a hundred crusades all across the galaxy against any and every type of foe of humanity. [SPEAKER_01]: There's a reason that they have entire units that are called crusaders. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, because they should be what they do. [SPEAKER_00]: They should be called Lee Roy Jenkins, because that's really more what they do. [SPEAKER_00]: The Black Templar in the middle of a crusade, and then someone says, hey, we've got a crusade over here, and then the Black Templar yell, Lee Roy Jenkins, and go across the galaxy and fight that one too. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, of course, our long should be one of their chapter masters with absolutely. [SPEAKER_00]: But the other, this chapters are not dissimilar from this. [SPEAKER_00]: They tend to be a bit more judicious about their selection of Crusades. [SPEAKER_00]: They still do it. [SPEAKER_00]: More importantly, for the fist in the Black Templar, though, is the era of authority that they carry with them around the Crusades. [SPEAKER_00]: Because, as I said before, I think that the fists, and thereby the Black Templar, are the most famous of all the space marine legends to the regular citizens of the Imperium. [SPEAKER_00]: Because they're the number one ones for propaganda because they're always crusading. [SPEAKER_00]: They're always killing heretics, killing Zeno's, purging rebellions. [SPEAKER_00]: This is what they are. [SPEAKER_00]: So they are probably the most known factions within the regular citizenry. [SPEAKER_00]: Because the nineteen forties newsreels, a lot of fists. [SPEAKER_01]: I should like the fist more because they've killed the lords of terror multiple times now. [SPEAKER_00]: He had that's like the funny thing. [SPEAKER_00]: There are only people I'm aware of who led Crusades on to terror have been the fists. [SPEAKER_00]: They purged Van Gork and then many, many years later they're part of the group that purged Goes Van Deer. [SPEAKER_00]: That's kind of badass not being honest. [SPEAKER_00]: They're the ones who invade terror the most. [SPEAKER_00]: But for today's cast, we're not going to really talk about those crusades of the fists, and they should have endless, I'm going to conquer the galaxy. [SPEAKER_00]: Instead, we're going to focus on the Crusades that do effectively run through the lords of Terra and are carried out by the variable forces of the Imperium. [SPEAKER_00]: GW does a really cool thing when they write about the Crusades in this setting. [SPEAKER_00]: They are either part of multiple novels, allowing for really deep character development in the storylines. [SPEAKER_00]: That's going to be like all the Gaunt's ghosts, those are Crusades, a chifus cane, Crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: I think Eisenhower bounces in and out of a couple. [SPEAKER_00]: They're always a background story there. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's something he usually ends up doing a story inside of a story. [SPEAKER_01]: And I do like this one because they give structure to when we're pushing out. [SPEAKER_01]: We're not just fighting to fight. [SPEAKER_01]: They're fighting to accomplish goals. [SPEAKER_01]: And that is one of the biggest things about the Crusades is they're giving focus to a galaxy that's completely at war. [SPEAKER_01]: You're going to get [SPEAKER_01]: You're going to get that reveal just of this is the same thing all the time. [SPEAKER_01]: If you give a name and a purpose to a piece of this war, then you get people behind it, you get people excited, you get people fighting with fervor as opposed to just fighting because that's what we do every day. [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, at the same time, GW will also do something that we all know I love, is putting things in code X's. [SPEAKER_00]: Little multi-paragraph stories that show the truth that of the nightmare, that is the grim dark future. [SPEAKER_00]: So it's really cool how the crusades are a very nice narrative tool that GW uses. [SPEAKER_00]: And we're going to steal from GW here a little bit, and I'm going to do the same thing. [SPEAKER_00]: We're going to discuss what the crusades are, and then we're going to use some of these crusades themselves to explain how to explain my point. [SPEAKER_00]: First off, you have the crusades of expansion. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, a crusade of expansion is exactly that. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's increase the size of the Imperium. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's spread it into parts of the galaxy that have resisted the Imperium. [SPEAKER_00]: Oftentimes, these are mainly human worlds that were never returned after the age of strife, but sometimes they were part of the great crusade and got separated by a warp storm, and since a baited being part of the Imperium, not necessarily in rebellion, by the way. [SPEAKER_00]: Just may have been a, hey, we haven't talked to that planet in three thousand years. [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe we should go check on them. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, then there's one of my favorites, which is the Oops of Daisy. [SPEAKER_01]: We have to go get this planet back because we settled it. [SPEAKER_01]: And then one of the Xenos races went, yeah, this was always our planet. [SPEAKER_01]: Didn't you see the Xenos sign that you can't read and or communicate with? [SPEAKER_00]: Or the last one, which is the same thing. [SPEAKER_00]: Hey, they find Xenos and gay, hey, nice planet you got here. [SPEAKER_00]: Be a shame or something happened to you all and we didn't became a human one. [SPEAKER_00]: After that, those kind of lead us into the next chunk, which is the Crusades of Conquest. [SPEAKER_00]: This is one where there has been conflict, and to Brad's point of view, more all of them is kind of of revenge. [SPEAKER_00]: These are less about conquering a system or a planet as much as killing an enemy. [SPEAKER_00]: So these are done when the Imperium always has when they conquer new land, but the motivation is different. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's say we have worlds in rebellion. [SPEAKER_00]: Those are crusades of conquest. [SPEAKER_00]: We are going to go there, kill every planetary governor, kill most of the citizenry, too, and re-populate, or we'll have stuff like the Cytherphines where the Black Templar went, hey, we're going to go just eliminate every single one of them, and remove them from the galaxy. [SPEAKER_00]: And if some of the planets that are on turn out to be nice for us, we'll colonize those, too. [SPEAKER_00]: But that's more of a side note. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but there's a lot more punching than there is taking back. [SPEAKER_00]: And a lot of this obviously has happened and that's we get to the latter part of Forty Kay history with the heretics going in and saying, okay, these worlds are run by world leaders. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, we're gonna go there and kill every single world leader because it's more a matter from moving the world leaders. [SPEAKER_00]: And again, do they even colonize these planets or this exterminate us all of them? [SPEAKER_00]: The third one though, which is the dark one. [SPEAKER_00]: And these are crusades of penance. [SPEAKER_00]: And I am actually only aware of these being part of space Marines, but my, the back of my brain is tingling and telling me that they have these for guard regiments as well. [SPEAKER_01]: Their Ecclesiarchy runs these also because they, yeah, they put together anybody that's repentant or supposed to be repentant and send them on their way. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but what I'm saying, but they don't send to their own troops. [SPEAKER_00]: The Ecclesiarchy, the sisters have their repent job, obviously. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about their efforts. [SPEAKER_00]: So what these are is this is when a space marine chapter primarily it may have been a guard, but I'd push into which killed the guardsmen, but they've decided a space marine chapter in some way has betrayed the emperor or is showing some sort of signs of disloyalty. [SPEAKER_00]: They will, yeah, they will then send that chapter on a crusade of penance, which is effectively and almost, well, Sissa Thien would be a step up and is an impossible task, usually, knowing that they will all die, but should they survive, they'll be forgiven for their sins and welcome back into the Imperium. [SPEAKER_00]: The sisters cast we covered this pretty well. [SPEAKER_00]: The repentia just are a small portion of the sisters who do this in a battle. [SPEAKER_00]: When we talk about these crusades of penance, what we're, this is much grander. [SPEAKER_00]: We're talking about hundreds, potentially thousands being deployed to an area. [SPEAKER_00]: And the goal is die in service the emperor or succeed in service the emperor. [SPEAKER_00]: But those are the only two things you're going to be able to do here. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, I think it's going to be easier with all those broken up to give you examples of them. [SPEAKER_00]: And the reason I'm going to do it that way is, hey, some of these stories are pretty cool and they're not really long enough for us to a full cast on, but also be they do all tend to have a dark turn at the end, which GW, I give GW a lot of grief for their writing. [SPEAKER_00]: And so when they do writing well, I like to give them rewards for doing it correctly. [SPEAKER_01]: This is where John tells you. [SPEAKER_01]: He's not, he's cheating you by not doing the endominus crusade immediately or delicately. [SPEAKER_01]: So, however, you did completely placate me by starting a soft with the McCary crusade, which is the story of the baddest dude ever in Imperial Guard, and I will die on this hill. [SPEAKER_01]: That is a fight you're going to have to deal with because you just you have a bunch of kifus came novel readers who were just tell you go pound same individually he was a super cool he's the funnest in stories for the well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well-well- [SPEAKER_00]: one of the most successful crusades ever since the great crusade yes let's talk about lord solar macarious lord solar macarious is not the current lord solar that's leonus who is on a horse which we all know i hate so much [SPEAKER_00]: This McCarris, who I wish I could use instead because, you know, no horse. [SPEAKER_01]: Because he was also on a tank. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, where he should have been. [SPEAKER_00]: He's probably honest with you to take. [SPEAKER_00]: I will take it if you just give me this model and it'll scribe behind him, bang and coconuts together. [SPEAKER_00]: I will play that. [SPEAKER_00]: I think it might be modeling for advantage, but if someone who has CAD skills wants to design that for me, I will print it and I will paint it and play with it. [SPEAKER_00]: I love the idea of my Lord Solar having a scribe behind him banging coconuts together, making horse snap noises. [SPEAKER_00]: But anyway. [SPEAKER_00]: Maccarious is like any guardsman rose through the ranks from a lowly beginning. [SPEAKER_00]: He became Lord Solar, mostly by fighting in the protracted campaign, mostly by fighting in the protracted campaign within segment and solar in the earlier part of the Forty First millennia. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't really know the full details around this. [SPEAKER_00]: It's covered in the books, but not even well, that there was just a budget human colonies started falling to civil war within segment and solar. [SPEAKER_00]: It's mostly over the lords of terror, obviously. [SPEAKER_00]: It's higher than too much. [SPEAKER_01]: They taxed them and didn't give much stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: I love this because Mark Harris, who's supposed to be placed after Alexander the Great, and one of the things he does is when he takes back over these places, not only is he so successful tactically, but also his diplomatic skills were insane, because a lot of these early guys became his generals, these warlords that were sitting in the Civil War, [SPEAKER_01]: came over to his side. [SPEAKER_01]: He became one of his most loyal followers and generals in his crusade, pushing on him. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And that's the key thing is that with McCarris, he is a cult of personality. [SPEAKER_00]: And we're talking more about that as we get into it. [SPEAKER_00]: where the McCarris crusade comes from is in three ninety two of them forty one he goes to the lords of terror and tells them. [SPEAKER_00]: It's right and asks them he really more tells them to help him launch the greatest crusade. [SPEAKER_01]: super popular at this point in time. [SPEAKER_01]: It's not like Ted showed up and's like, yeah, I want to leave it crusade. [SPEAKER_01]: He basically showed up with bright lights and the news on him going, hey, I'm going to do this. [SPEAKER_01]: It's cool, right? [SPEAKER_00]: Of course it's cool. [SPEAKER_00]: Why wouldn't it be cool? [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: One thing I want to point out in GW writing is this is considered the largest crusade since the great crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: That phrase you will hear a lot over the course of our Lord cast over the coming years. [SPEAKER_00]: GW to their credit. [SPEAKER_00]: does do this chronologically. [SPEAKER_00]: At this stage of three ninety two m forty one this was the largest crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: There were about three hundred not that many. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, maybe prior largest crusades since the great crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: Each of them gets bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger. [SPEAKER_00]: Damocles and endominus are obviously bigger than this one, et cetera. [SPEAKER_00]: It's at a certain point starts to feel like when a car manufacturer says we made the fastest production car ever because that's five horsepower more than the last one. [SPEAKER_00]: And then three years later, they do it again. [SPEAKER_00]: Here you go. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, and over this, guys. [SPEAKER_00]: But let's talk about this crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: This crusade was, again, a crusade of conquest, which is the first group that we talked about, focusing on getting more worlds for the impure, increasing the imperium logistic capabilities and everything. [SPEAKER_00]: And they focused on the segmentum pacificus, which is the left side of the galaxy. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, the segmentant pacificus is a little bit of an oddity. [SPEAKER_00]: And I call it that because it's not a very large segmentum, especially if it compared to the other parts of the galaxy. [SPEAKER_00]: But it has been rocked by chaos. [SPEAKER_01]: Specifically by chaos. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And so you have there. [SPEAKER_00]: This is where cold cheeses, which is the plant that lorgar. [SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's cooler. [SPEAKER_01]: It's cooler. [SPEAKER_01]: It's also taneth, which is where Gonsgo's is from. [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: And that if you haven't read Gonskosts, you should be doing that. [SPEAKER_00]: It's really, really good. [SPEAKER_00]: But what makes it interesting is that the light of the astronomical doesn't project very well into it. [SPEAKER_00]: If you look at a map on the far edge of the segment and because is about as far that all the way left edge is about as far away from Terra as nocturn. [SPEAKER_00]: which is where Vulcan was from. [SPEAKER_00]: It's less than half the distance to where the Tao Empire is. [SPEAKER_00]: And we know the astronaut can reach out into those areas because we routinely do work travel into those areas. [SPEAKER_00]: So it no one understands fully why the astronaut can't reach in a segment in Pacificus. [SPEAKER_00]: But what we do know is the imperium didn't really focus on the region because everyone was afraid of going there. [SPEAKER_00]: Because the viewpoint within the imperium is if you can't see the astronomical you are not under the protection of the Emperor. [SPEAKER_01]: The United of the Light of the Emperor also known as the protection of the Emperor. [SPEAKER_00]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: But Maccarious was born and raised in this system and he was determined to bring it into the fold for the Imperium. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, much of this system had fallen away from the Imperium in M. Thirty-six. [SPEAKER_00]: It's when one of the major Ecclesiarchy conflicts with the Imperium occurred. [SPEAKER_01]: Also, one of Abadans crusades was in here too. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And so during this period of time, a lot of these systems just left the Imperium. [SPEAKER_00]: Some of it was self-preservation. [SPEAKER_00]: Some of it was influence of chaos. [SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't really known, but Larry thousands of years went past. [SPEAKER_00]: And these systems just sat independent and either resisting any imperial outreach or just ignore. [SPEAKER_01]: I was gonna say there was actually more than we're just ignoring context. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, there was so much new phone who this that would get going back into the mess and just like, I don't know, you guys. [SPEAKER_00]: Imperial time, spell it, you know. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'll get back to you. [SPEAKER_01]: Just as glad you played Tuesday. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I got a bad connection with this and I'm hearing you're just breaking up. [SPEAKER_00]: Can you try again tomorrow? [SPEAKER_00]: Click. [SPEAKER_00]: And the cool thing about the Macarious Crusade is it is massively successful. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, for it's banana pants successful. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: In seven years, Macarious brought back a thousand worlds. [SPEAKER_01]: Again, a thousand worlds. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's all these worlds. [SPEAKER_00]: And also in these worlds, we're not little cute ones. [SPEAKER_00]: Like some of the worlds you went to in Mass Effect One where you drove around for fifteen minutes and found everything. [SPEAKER_00]: He found high worlds, like Persepolis is one of the largest high worlds in the galaxy. [SPEAKER_00]: He reclaimed that the resource boost that the Imperium got was insane. [SPEAKER_00]: And as the campaign continued, more and more worlds were brought into compliance. [SPEAKER_00]: further increasing not only the resources in pairing, but more importantly, at this era, increasing morale amongst the Imperium. [SPEAKER_00]: During this, Macarious, this is where they start to get a little bit sad, is Macarious fought everybody in this campaign. [SPEAKER_00]: Chaos, Zinos, Rebellion Humans, some of the stories are he fought an orc-wa that had twenty-three billion orcs and he killed them all. [SPEAKER_00]: He also made a bunch of Zinos species extinct, including one that was basically a jungle triant. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the last march of the ends. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, what an cool. [SPEAKER_00]: It's the one, I want that model anyway. [SPEAKER_00]: But as Bible saying earlier, he was written more like Alexander the Great, but she's not more like he was written exactly like that. [SPEAKER_01]: He's supposed to be space Alexander the Great, but one of the biggest things is people, worlds he reclaim just completely embraced him and the Imperium, but mainly him as they got reconquered. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and this is important because these worlds didn't feel like they're being conquered, they feel like they're being liberated. [SPEAKER_00]: From the dark, in some case they're being liberated from chaos, but at times it was, even the worlds who were independent were doing fine, they still felt having met Maccarious that, oh, this Imperium is something I want to be part of, and I need to be part of, and so he's liberated them from the darkness. [SPEAKER_00]: and Macarious. [SPEAKER_00]: Also, like the Imperial Fests and Black Templars, just kept going. [SPEAKER_00]: Every world he conquered, he fortified and then moved. [SPEAKER_01]: I was just want to say, however, he was really good at having a system of as soon as I'm leaving. [SPEAKER_01]: All of these people are showing up to start fixing stuff, propagating stuff, setting back up trade. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, you get another tie. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm glad you're back. [SPEAKER_01]: Also, by tomorrow, you should have X amount of widgets ready to go. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it is cool because in the stories you have, like the mission areas show up to help make sure that it doesn't really understand what being part of the imperium is. [SPEAKER_00]: agents, the inquisition come in to make sure that they did eliminate all of the bad actors. [SPEAKER_00]: Adeptors have been a stratum show up to Brad's point of the, hey, here's what you owe us. [SPEAKER_00]: Here's when we're showing up to collect it. [SPEAKER_00]: Here's how you make it so we can collect it. [SPEAKER_00]: And also, because there's a lot, some of his worlds were in rebellion, a bunch of new colonists were showing up and, and some people to fix the stuff that felt the orbital bombardment. [SPEAKER_00]: But overall, pretty massive net win. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, this is about the part as it got further in, it's our stick a dark turn. [SPEAKER_00]: And this is because, as we were just discussing, the world of the segment to Pacificists were heavily corrupted by chaos. [SPEAKER_00]: Makarius consistently found himself leading troops in battle against cultists, even a few greater demons, one of which, by the way, picked him up and he looked it in the eye and screamed in its face. [SPEAKER_00]: Makarius is a boss. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Makarius. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's not the fight. [SPEAKER_01]: Things started to go, but as all things in Forty K. Go, dark and evil, because Maccarious went from the most popular liberator in, what, ten thousand years, two kind of a, but as everything is in Forty K, the grim dark because it keeps more and more chaos. [SPEAKER_01]: And cast us crazy stuff and they taint and they corrupt and they make it. [SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like it was a lot of small betrayals from the people he was trying to take over. [SPEAKER_01]: He becomes me more ruthless at the end of this campaign. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, McCarris, as the campaign continues and gets to basically the end, he reaches something called the Halo Stars. [SPEAKER_00]: And we discussed in episode ninety ninety one world travel, but the Halo Stars are what they call everything that rims the imperial galaxy where the astronomical cannot be seen. [SPEAKER_00]: So, for example, the imperial reaches pretty far into the Milky Way, but it stops before dark space. [SPEAKER_00]: And it's because the astronomical can't get that far. [SPEAKER_00]: Humans don't go into the halo stars because you can't. [SPEAKER_00]: You're now doing blind warp jumps in an area that especially segmented pacificus has a lot of chaos in it. [SPEAKER_00]: And where this story comes to a sad conclusion is McCarris had to stop when he got there, because all of his troops just refused to go when he further. [SPEAKER_00]: They conquered a thousand worlds for the Imperium, and most of the troops felt they'd done this via Miracle. [SPEAKER_00]: McCarris himself had been elevated to a living saint, because the viewpoint was no one could have done this without being having the Emperor. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and the halo stars are beyond the light of the emperor. [SPEAKER_00]: So the troops were terrified that if they crossed this kind of line that all the power that the emperor was putting through them would go away and they would die. [SPEAKER_00]: And so they were wrong. [SPEAKER_00]: No, they were not wrong at all. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, this is dead accurate. [SPEAKER_00]: And so it happens is Macarious has to turn around. [SPEAKER_00]: And this leaves the death of Maccarious is in imperial records. [SPEAKER_00]: And what's publicly known is that after reaching the far side of the galaxy, his crusade concluded, and that without purpose, [SPEAKER_00]: of this crusade, Maccarious did fall into a bit of a malaise, which is normal. [SPEAKER_00]: All generals do this. [SPEAKER_00]: You're a warring general, you're a warring general, and when you stop warring, they get kind of tired. [SPEAKER_00]: And he got over it and began leading his troops back, but then he died. [SPEAKER_00]: And he died because while fighting in some random place, he contracted jungle fever, having contracted jungle fever during his campaign. [SPEAKER_00]: And the lack of purpose, he [SPEAKER_00]: his body was able to fight as it was while he was campaigning at overtook him and he died. [SPEAKER_00]: He died a hero of the appearance. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to give you the Brad theory on this because they talk about it a little bit. [SPEAKER_01]: I actually think that he's just his soul was injured from all of the chaos that he was [SPEAKER_01]: had to find. [SPEAKER_01]: He was taking part. [SPEAKER_01]: He was so close in chaos. [SPEAKER_01]: And he just took damage. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, sexual soul damage, which the Imperium, not really great at healing. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'll go ahead and give you some credit here. [SPEAKER_00]: Your Brad theory is correct. [SPEAKER_00]: That's literally what they wrote. [SPEAKER_00]: It was infected by a miracle, but by a normal place. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's what we think. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, he was the nirgot play, but I actually think that he, the reason he couldn't fight them off was because of the fact that his soul was damaged. [SPEAKER_01]: And during the times when he was fighting and everything else, he was powered by the light in the Emperor. [SPEAKER_01]: He was had the Emperor's protection against it. [SPEAKER_01]: And then when he wasn't fighting, [SPEAKER_01]: because his own soul has been his light had been diminished so much. [SPEAKER_01]: He couldn't fight. [SPEAKER_01]: I know that's what they wrote, but I'm saying by theory goes into the, he doesn't fight it because he's no longer getting that direct Emperor Mojo, but also he just took a lot of damage himself and he was no longer able to fight that off. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and the example I would use of what you just said there is during the horse during the siege of Tara when my favorite primar of jagged icon gets wounded and poisoned by Mortarian as soon as he's brought his body's brought back onto like, basically. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, she goes away. [SPEAKER_00]: September of the emperor. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, all the infection goes away. [SPEAKER_00]: And so it's possible the emperor, and we've talked about this also in the sister's cast that the saints tend to burn really hot and hard, and then they suddenly burn out. [SPEAKER_00]: The emperor probably was infusing Maccarious with energy, and then when Maccarious is crusade ended, the emperor went, well, that's taken care of and looked somewhere else. [SPEAKER_00]: And now all the nirgot plague that was inside him started rising. [SPEAKER_00]: The part we're getting to is what really happened to Macarious is he was killed by the FSUSS enormous. [SPEAKER_00]: And they don't necessarily say why, but the belief why is that he was becoming overwhelmed by this Nargal plague. [SPEAKER_00]: And this is the ultimate hero for the Imperium. [SPEAKER_00]: He is a [SPEAKER_00]: propaganda just could have brought and they could not have any video on that of him becoming corrupted by chaos, speaking out against the imperium. [SPEAKER_00]: So they killed him and they killed him and died at natural causes. [SPEAKER_01]: Also, I think that they probably would have killed him anyways because he was pretty vocal about [SPEAKER_01]: mankind, not being, basically being cowards. [SPEAKER_01]: He was pissed. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: That they did. [SPEAKER_00]: He was furious at the end. [SPEAKER_00]: And all of his troops said no, he just couldn't shoot them all. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: But one important piece is that after Macarious died, more than half the world's he conquered, fell into rebellion. [SPEAKER_00]: because they don't join the Imperium to be part of Macarious. [SPEAKER_00]: And then when he died, they discovered what the real Imperium was, and they all went, yeah, no. [SPEAKER_00]: So within about a century, most all of the games from Macarious were undone. [SPEAKER_00]: And this is a common story in Crusades. [SPEAKER_00]: In the short term, they're successful, but in the long term, they have wings, because a lot of times, we're conquering parts of the galaxy that just don't want to be conquered. [SPEAKER_00]: And unless you want to put consistent effort and do it, it just doesn't go. [SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't really do much. [SPEAKER_01]: You want to end even the Maccarious Crusade with a bread theory that people will throw back at me. [SPEAKER_01]: I think Maccarious used, it was a psycher that no one knew was a psycher. [SPEAKER_01]: He didn't even know he's a psycher. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that comes a lot up in the Imperium, rather just like I can channel the Emperor and whatever I believe in. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_00]: He was just magically putting people to his side. [SPEAKER_00]: But another one I want to talk about, we cover this a bit in the Black Templar cast is the Gerolas Crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: We'll be right back after a quick break. [SPEAKER_00]: So the Gerolas system predates the Imperium. [SPEAKER_00]: It was founded back when mankind first stretched into the stars, and it survived the age of strife. [SPEAKER_00]: No, it survived. [SPEAKER_00]: Actually, he didn't survive. [SPEAKER_01]: They showed up and they were like, hey man, you want a cup of tea and anything because we're totally doing great here. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and also situated in segment and pacificus, it really went unnoticed by the Imperium for a long time, even during the Great Crusade because of just it was an area that was kind of hard to get to and wasn't seen as all that valuable. [SPEAKER_00]: But eventually the Imperium did take notice of the system and sent missionaries there to explain to them the glory that is the Imperium. [SPEAKER_00]: which the journalist system killed all his missionaries. [SPEAKER_00]: So then the impairing went, well, you know, shame next verse. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you're the first. [SPEAKER_00]: The executive killed them. [SPEAKER_00]: That's more missionaries and they murdered those ones. [SPEAKER_00]: So the third missionaries came with the Black Templars. [SPEAKER_00]: And what I find interesting about this crusade, though, and it really is how I'm going to bring it up is, the Jerala system is all human. [SPEAKER_00]: A lot of these crusades we talk about conquering a system, it is because they're doing stuff with Zenos. [SPEAKER_00]: They part of Zenos, not the Jerala's, or chaos. [SPEAKER_00]: Also, no chaos take any furniture. [SPEAKER_01]: It's tated. [SPEAKER_01]: There was no Zenos. [SPEAKER_01]: They just had information about how the Imperium was working and went [SPEAKER_01]: You guys are awful. [SPEAKER_01]: They weren't wrong at all. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And so the Black Templar killed all of them and they reselt it. [SPEAKER_00]: But I just want to bring them up because this is someone who were not enemies of mankind in any way, shape or form. [SPEAKER_00]: They were not repelling against the imperium. [SPEAKER_00]: The only time they fought the imperium is when the imperium told them to come join them. [SPEAKER_00]: Yet still, [SPEAKER_00]: they took at the full brunt of the imperial forces. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, the opposite was the second, not the first, agesyncrasay. [SPEAKER_00]: in which this is this one's a much rougher crusade because in this one yet entire system that had been isolated by workstorms and when the warped storms abated they discovered all the worlds had fallen to a heretical mechanic so this is basically the dark the dark mechanic and are gone but in the same way humans can become artyx so can add back so in this case it all came out of one forge world and it's main uh... [SPEAKER_00]: Whatever, the leader of that was, became horrifically corrupted, turning all of the people in the system into servitors, skittari, mutants, and abominable machinery. [SPEAKER_01]: We had basically demonic engines before demonic engines were a thing. [SPEAKER_00]: And so the Red Scorpions, who are a chapter of unknown origin, so we don't know who there was successor of, [SPEAKER_00]: We'll cover them more in the future. [SPEAKER_00]: Guys, we're going to go a bunch of casts and something random. [SPEAKER_00]: Super awesome, actually. [SPEAKER_00]: Red scorpions are, but there's a problem. [SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of them are awesome. [SPEAKER_00]: They were deployed in force with titan legions, nighthouses, and even imperial regiments, and they just scoured the entire world completely. [SPEAKER_00]: Removed every single piece of evidence that anything had ever even been there. [SPEAKER_01]: which sucked for the Imperium because of the fact that these worlds were unbelievably valuable and they had to destroy effectively all of the everything that was there. [SPEAKER_01]: This was all corrupted. [SPEAKER_00]: And there have been a number of these types of genocidal campaigns, which, as Crusades, the Abonian genocide where an entire subsector was declared deoblous in calculus, whatever the hell that means, and perched every single living being in a subsector was perched. [SPEAKER_00]: This square wrap crusade where the space walls were purging a system. [SPEAKER_00]: This one's almost used as storage for one really cool piece of the space walls doing something clever. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, not just clever. [SPEAKER_00]: Really awesome. [SPEAKER_00]: The space walls were purging a system next to the eye of terror. [SPEAKER_00]: Surprise surprise. [SPEAKER_00]: It was a trap. [SPEAKER_00]: Good job space. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's a trapper and it's something. [SPEAKER_00]: But what I love about this is that while they were trapped, they realized the auto-camp, their predator tanks couldn't pound through the enemy dreadnoughts and tanks. [SPEAKER_00]: So all the long fangs walked over with their last cannons, they strapped the last cannons onto the predator tanks. [SPEAKER_00]: You're welcome for the predator annihilator. [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_00]: The predator annihilator is a space-wolf invention, but I've never seen a space-wolf player run. [SPEAKER_00]: A predator annihilator, if I'm being honest. [SPEAKER_01]: Why, you know, I'm going to run two in my next space will find me just to make DC. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and the GW will point them into oblivion, because every time you play Spacewall, it's GW points into oblivion. [SPEAKER_01]: You're welcome to Spacewall players. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: One of my favorite ones, though, was the Leppis Crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: This was when the Knights of the Round found themselves faced with a like a mutated beast. [SPEAKER_00]: And the beast was guarding a cave that had a data slate, depending on the location of a holy relic. [SPEAKER_00]: And despite being surrounded by the remains of prior crusaders, the Knights underestimate. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's, by the way, you take a peek. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's all the signs that is written there that they saw all the fallen comrades and they still underestimate these are like there's so many dead people wearing exactly what I'm wearing. [SPEAKER_01]: It's probably an easy kill. [SPEAKER_00]: The beast eventually arrives, it's got huge teeth, and the vicious streak of mile-wide, and it can leap. [SPEAKER_00]: So the initial losses of the campaign were pretty significant, and they had to force the campaign to retreat. [SPEAKER_00]: But luckily, they had a sacred weapon. [SPEAKER_00]: The holy hangrate of Antioch was then discovered, and they were able to destroy the beast once and for all. [SPEAKER_01]: Look, if they would have just looked at the signs that were written. [SPEAKER_01]: I warned you. [SPEAKER_00]: I warned you. [SPEAKER_00]: Did you listen? [SPEAKER_00]: I warned you. [SPEAKER_00]: No. [SPEAKER_00]: If you don't know what I'm referring to guys, I'm sorry, but a bunch of you do. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think you're welcome. [SPEAKER_00]: There's no scenario. [SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't going to cause they quote that movie while talking about crusades. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, let's talk about one that's actually is in Forty Kay, the Gulstar Crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: And this is the one where the Black Templars under Helbrook decided to just rid the galaxy of the cythorphines. [SPEAKER_00]: And this was a true genocide campaign. [SPEAKER_00]: They conquered and destroyed every single planet that the cythore that they could find till they got the cythore homeworld, which they found abandoned and the no evidence of the presence anywhere. [SPEAKER_00]: And Helbrook [SPEAKER_00]: because he's just awesome. [SPEAKER_00]: His solution is was, what if we just start burning all of these worlds? [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe that'll make them come out of hiding so I can stab them with my sword. [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm still mad that GW didn't follow through with that, because as they were about to start burning the worlds, gas reappeared, and Helbert had to run over there. [SPEAKER_00]: But I'm still upset about that, because that's one of those storylines I would have loved have heard of, like, Helbert is burning systems until the site doors reappeared, and he gets to kill them all. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about how some crusades are not as successful. [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, say, I'm not that doll. [SPEAKER_01]: Some of these were not successful. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: The first one is the Dune campaign where Arthur and his crusade went to capture a holy relic and they ran to fierce resistance. [SPEAKER_00]: So the walls of the fortress were just all but unassailable. [SPEAKER_00]: And the defenders literally sat on top and mocked them. [SPEAKER_00]: They had one of their mother, told him about what Halle smelled, and despite an attempt to sneak into the fortress using what was akin to a Trojan horse, but shaped like a rabbit, they were rebuffed and had to move on to other targets elsewhere. [SPEAKER_00]: Told you, I'm not going to stop. [SPEAKER_00]: Can't stop, won't stop. [SPEAKER_00]: Hell yeah man, it smells like it's smell of elder berries. [SPEAKER_00]: Mother was a hamster. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, but more complicated was the agivian crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: And the agivian crusade was launched to reclaim an area called the collage expanse, Calex. [SPEAKER_00]: If they have a wine and axe together, I'm not going to get the differentiation right. [SPEAKER_00]: This is in the segment to obscure us and write up by the Halo Stars. [SPEAKER_00]: And this was an incredible force was joining other, seventeen million human troops, five chapters of space marines, including Black Templars, Howling Griffins, Tigers Argent, just a good name. [SPEAKER_00]: Leisure Titanic obviously went along with AdMec. [SPEAKER_00]: And the first year the campaign was a massive success. [SPEAKER_00]: Two major things. [SPEAKER_01]: We also crushed three Zeno's races. [SPEAKER_01]: And we took pretty much for all practical purposes. [SPEAKER_01]: No real casualties. [SPEAKER_00]: Yep. [SPEAKER_00]: And so what happens is this is, of course, where it starts to take the bad turn. [SPEAKER_00]: This incredible speed and success gets the eye of the lords of Terra, who now want to double down on it. [SPEAKER_00]: So they just say, all the troops you need go get us more. [SPEAKER_00]: And the Crusade continues. [SPEAKER_00]: For next twelve years, it goes very well. [SPEAKER_00]: About two hundred worlds are added to the Imperium. [SPEAKER_00]: A lot of them were exterminatists, and then reclaimed that still counts. [SPEAKER_00]: And the successes were so great at this point that several guard regiments were actually given worlds to settle, which is something we hear about in this promised every guard regiment, but there's not a lot of examples in the lore of it actually happening. [SPEAKER_00]: More hope than they're not, they just all die. [SPEAKER_00]: So that's how successful this was being the key word. [SPEAKER_00]: Because in the sixteenth year, the lords of Tara once again wanted more. [SPEAKER_00]: And the third times I'd always said, sure, a couple things happen. [SPEAKER_00]: First off, they're running out of places to conquer that are easily conquered. [SPEAKER_00]: They're now pushing right to the edge of the galaxy where, remember, when you get to the halo stars, humanity has never gone this far. [SPEAKER_00]: And if they did, it was during the age of technology. [SPEAKER_00]: So there's a lot more resistance when you get up to the halo stars than you do in what's called the astronomical part of the galaxy. [SPEAKER_00]: to make matters worse, all of a sudden, a massive warp storm engulfs the region. [SPEAKER_00]: This storm rips apart ships that are in transit and they don't give you it's an actual number, but it's from implication, I'd say close to fifty percent of the fleet. [SPEAKER_01]: I was going to say, with use words like devastated, it's probably pretty big. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's more than two percent. [SPEAKER_00]: I feel confident. [SPEAKER_00]: It's higher than two percent. [SPEAKER_00]: In response to this, the current Lord militant over the crusade orders the whole crusade to halt and the fallback. [SPEAKER_00]: and they fall back just in time for an org wall to show up and the you've off to appear. [SPEAKER_01]: Now, I don't think this was a bigger deal on this because the you've off are a chaos and a few Xenos race. [SPEAKER_01]: And I got the feeling that they had the ability to mess with some of the planets that were taken. [SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't really sad, but yes. [SPEAKER_00]: behind them a bunch of the colonies world started to rebel and they started to rebel when the you have to go not yet so just to set it the problem with this is crusades go forward they go forward for it now they fell back okay we're going to fall back and we're going to go again but we can't because all of a sudden one side of us is getting slapped by works [SPEAKER_00]: The other side of us can slide by the Yuvav, and then to Brad's exact point there, all the worlds behind us that we were relying on for support and logistics are falling into civil war. [SPEAKER_00]: Chaos is all over the system now, and to make matters worse, the great spiritual leader of the whole campaign gets assassinated. [SPEAKER_00]: Not by the official, but by, like, actually, the chaos or someone, one of them kills him off. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, this crusade is effectively collapsing in itself. [SPEAKER_00]: Luckily, the upside of it is that there was a leader amongst the Imperial Forces named General Drusus. [SPEAKER_00]: And Drusus is very similar to McCarris, because GW doesn't write things that differently. [SPEAKER_00]: He leads his troops from the front, the world that he's on all love him. [SPEAKER_00]: And he sees the campaign not only stalling, but on the verge of collapse. [SPEAKER_00]: And he begins making just a bunch of noise. [SPEAKER_00]: The good news for the Imperium is that the Inquisition also notices this. [SPEAKER_00]: And they take all of Jerusalem's kind of like noise and all of his grandeur and all something is projecting it out. [SPEAKER_00]: And pretty soon he becomes a folk hero amongst the groups in this region. [SPEAKER_01]: And a completely random event though. [SPEAKER_01]: He was offered an upgrade to a new position because the old Lord militant apparently slipped on a banana peel and fell down the steps. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he had a million dollar baby moment where he just fell funny or weird thing. [SPEAKER_00]: In truth, he was assassinated by the fist U.S. [SPEAKER_00]: Department of Defense, because he sucked. [SPEAKER_00]: And so, Drew Cis is then promoted to Lord Melaton. [SPEAKER_00]: Drew Cis does reset the footing of the campaign and ends up purging to you from and all the rebellious worlds. [SPEAKER_00]: So in the end, the Egyptian crusade is a victory, but it's a peric victory because the Imperium lost a ton of troops in this whole process and the net gain of the worlds that they achieved probably won't pay dividends because by the time they make up for all the losses it took to reclaim them. [SPEAKER_00]: Those roles are probably all faulted chaos anyway. [SPEAKER_01]: And you have to have a huge force here of probably inquisition and ecclesiarchy because of the forces of chaos are very strong and very firm in this area. [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly, but now I want to get to the end of our cast by talking about some really messed up crusades. [SPEAKER_00]: And this is a stuff where you really discover the true darkness behind them. [SPEAKER_00]: So the first one is the Ophidium Gulf. [SPEAKER_00]: And this is one where the Black Templar led a crusade into the veiled region. [SPEAKER_00]: And they went there to kill off a primitive Zeno species, who somehow felt a worship of something of a God called the voice of the Emperor. [SPEAKER_01]: This is a really cool story. [SPEAKER_01]: It's really cool story. [SPEAKER_00]: It's worth reading on this one. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's not much of a read by the way. [SPEAKER_00]: It's not like it's, I think it's two pages. [SPEAKER_01]: It's not there's an entire, there's a, uh, due to a whole animated fanfiction of this. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, he did, yeah, I'm sorry. [SPEAKER_00]: What he would have based out of is I think it's the pages and a codex. [SPEAKER_01]: It's the same thing of the fan thing. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, of course. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, the Black Templar want to know the reason behind this and they start progressing into it. [SPEAKER_00]: And as they reach the system and they start moving towards the core and they notice something odd, all the worlds that they find are devastated. [SPEAKER_00]: They've all actually what appears to have been orbiterly bombarded, but they are still have the core of the system has this transmissions. [SPEAKER_00]: So heading towards it, heading towards it. [SPEAKER_00]: They eventually reach the core of the system and the main planet there, and they discover a dark angel's fleet. [SPEAKER_00]: Just hang it out, right by it. [SPEAKER_00]: And the Black Templar, we try to look dark angels and say, hey, we're looking for this voice to the embers. [SPEAKER_00]: That way you guys are doing, and the dark angels give them a maybe. [SPEAKER_00]: And the Black Templar said, look, why don't work here? [SPEAKER_00]: You're here. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's work together because we're both space marines, right? [SPEAKER_00]: And we'll work on this as one. [SPEAKER_01]: However, if you can see this right now, I'm doing a lot of air quotes for also a space raid while I'm sure. [SPEAKER_00]: Why not? [SPEAKER_00]: I guess we're related. [SPEAKER_00]: The Black Templar and the Dark Angels deploy down. [SPEAKER_00]: And while fighting on the main capital, it's actually the Black Templar that come across the voice of the Emperor, which is just a being clad in all Black power armor, who does not speak. [SPEAKER_00]: They capture him, all proud of themselves, and jump back to their ship. [SPEAKER_00]: When they get back to their ship, there's a message waiting for them from the Dark Angels saying, we would like that prisoner, please, can you hand him over? [SPEAKER_00]: And as the Black Templar leader goes to reach out to the Dark Angels saying, well, no, we captured him. [SPEAKER_00]: We would like to do the interview. [SPEAKER_00]: They discover the entire Dark Angels fleet are powering up their weapons. [SPEAKER_00]: And which point they say, you know what? [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe we don't need this guy. [SPEAKER_00]: You guys seem to want him more than we do. [SPEAKER_00]: And they transfer the prisoner at which point all the dark angel ships leave the system. [SPEAKER_00]: Fun story, though, is no one has seen those Black Templar ever since. [SPEAKER_00]: They sent the message that they were translating into the warp and they've never come back out of the warp. [SPEAKER_00]: Is it a complete coincidence? [SPEAKER_00]: No, the Dark Angels, one hundred was at murder. [SPEAKER_00]: Probably in the warp, by the way. [SPEAKER_00]: The Dark people, I assumption we're waiting for them in the warp and when they translate in, that's where they killed them all. [SPEAKER_00]: It is still the Dark Angels, guys. [SPEAKER_00]: They're sketch. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, I'm even more messed up one though, is the margin crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: This is, ugh. [SPEAKER_00]: So, the minestorm decides to declare their own crusade to claim an area called the KaleiExector C-A-L-I-X-I-S. [SPEAKER_00]: This was declared by the minestorm both as a crusade and as a war of faith. [SPEAKER_00]: which means this one cannot be ignored. [SPEAKER_00]: All the attention of the imperium goes to this. [SPEAKER_00]: Millions of troops are converted into a crazy. [SPEAKER_01]: But it's crazy because we have no sisters. [SPEAKER_01]: There's just nobody in power over there's no marines. [SPEAKER_01]: No. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's that crazy. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they launched the campaign with they do have capital shifts, but yeah, no adnec, no sisters, no space permits, nothing. [SPEAKER_00]: Just pure human troops. [SPEAKER_00]: It was an all human campaign. [SPEAKER_00]: And unfortunately, the Ecclesiarchy are not known for their battle acumen or tactics, and this campaign is into one of the most difficult reaches of space. [SPEAKER_00]: And it was led by cause a high confessor, which is effectively a priest. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And not a priest, by the way, who had graduated from some like esteemed military academy, or a guy who's set next to a major general through numerous campaigns. [SPEAKER_00]: No, you got Ted from the bar down the street. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to make our Irish friends a bit. [SPEAKER_00]: We got Father Ted actually. [SPEAKER_00]: Father Ted. [SPEAKER_00]: That would have been a lot better if it was Father Ted, but it was not. [SPEAKER_01]: But the father Ted couldn't have led worse if he was drunk from the pub down the street. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: because this thing goes to shit immediately. [SPEAKER_01]: They didn't even get zero wins. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they actually began perishing before they even got there because the part of the galaxy they were going to has not good for warp travel. [SPEAKER_00]: Massive chunks of the fleet just die in the warp travel. [SPEAKER_00]: Never re-entering the material at all. [SPEAKER_00]: And those that do ran to the material, a lot of them are horrifically ravaged because their geiler fields didn't hold them. [SPEAKER_00]: It really drive home how bad this goes. [SPEAKER_00]: There is no organized Zeno threat in this part of the galaxy and the Zeno's, the random Zeno's out there slaughtered. [SPEAKER_00]: This is true. [SPEAKER_01]: There's six dudes with sticks that beat up this crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And within four years, the crusade is ended. [SPEAKER_00]: The high priest is dead. [SPEAKER_00]: Everything has gone wrong. [SPEAKER_00]: Except [SPEAKER_00]: The Ecclesiarchy couldn't afford such a pathetic failure. [SPEAKER_00]: Remember, when the ecclesiarchy does to me, they declare it. [SPEAKER_00]: So the whole galaxy, including the lords of Terra, even some space, everyone's aware of this incredible crusade that they were waging. [SPEAKER_00]: They can't come back and say, yeah, we didn't claim a single world and down of thirty million people are dead. [SPEAKER_01]: So instead, I love that this is so great because they keep the crus... I can't even do enough air cords. [SPEAKER_01]: I need multiple people to throw up the grunts for me. [SPEAKER_01]: They just keep grabbing people and saying, this crusade's going on. [SPEAKER_01]: And they just ship them to actual real things that are going on. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: The Ecclesiarchy just fires up the old propaganda machine and goes full on Potemkin village on the situation. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: This crusade still worth three hundred years in. [SPEAKER_00]: Crusade still growing strong. [SPEAKER_00]: But what's fun about it is what they do. [SPEAKER_00]: Because the problem is the crusade still going. [SPEAKER_00]: So if the crusade is still going, that means we still have to raise regimens. [SPEAKER_00]: We still have to make equipment. [SPEAKER_00]: We have to do all this stuff. [SPEAKER_00]: So what do you do with all that stuff? [SPEAKER_00]: The cool thing is that when you put someone on a ship and fire them into the warp, unless they're a navigator, they don't know where that ship is. [SPEAKER_00]: So you have millions, potentially more troops, equipment, all this stuff that loads onto a ship. [SPEAKER_00]: Translates into the warp to go out to the colexus sector and actually find themselves on the exact other side of the galaxy taking part in a different crusade in campaign. [SPEAKER_01]: Because that crusade's doing very well, by the way. [SPEAKER_00]: The, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, [SPEAKER_00]: But I want to close the cast out with really what I think is the darkest crusade I can find, which is the abyssal crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh God, nothing happens, good here. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so the abyssal crusade occurs in M-Thirty Seven. [SPEAKER_00]: And this is when the Ecclesiarchy had a massive later named St. [SPEAKER_00]: Basilius. [SPEAKER_00]: St. [SPEAKER_00]: Basilius rose very quickly through the ranks of the ecclesiarchy, and he was known for performing miracles, miracles of faith. [SPEAKER_00]: And as a result, he was granted the title of Living St. [SPEAKER_00]: because the fervor with which he worshiped the Emperor and the success in the truly grandioseness of the actions he performed. [SPEAKER_00]: everyone just assumed that the power of the Emperor flowed through him. [SPEAKER_01]: Except for the fact that Old Basilius was pretty crazy hardcore. [SPEAKER_01]: He was a hard, hard, hard, wait for it. [SPEAKER_01]: Hardcore, pure it in. [SPEAKER_01]: And he decided, everybody was a heretic in a traitor. [SPEAKER_01]: You're like, I don't like the way you cut the crust off your sandwich, heretic. [SPEAKER_01]: He was heading about this, too. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and when it's up happening, he gets so strong. [SPEAKER_00]: He actually has space certain space marine chapters that work effectively just for him. [SPEAKER_00]: They're not part of the Ecclesiarchy, but every time he says, hey, go punch that guy, they go punch that guy. [SPEAKER_00]: working closely with the the arbytes, which I'm not pronouncing, arbytes, despite rogue trader telling it, as both we pronounced, nope. [SPEAKER_00]: And the inquisition, he begins to change the imperium for the works. [SPEAKER_00]: He starts demanding, for example, that all the citizens turn on anyone, they suspect of heresy. [SPEAKER_00]: And if they don't suspect enough people of heresy, then it must be because they are the heretics themselves. [SPEAKER_00]: GW has this weird obsession with Stalinist Russia. [SPEAKER_00]: I cannot figure out where it came from, but it is a deep obsession with it when they do their writing. [SPEAKER_00]: All this takes a turn for the dirty when a major warped storm appears and covers about a dozen systems. [SPEAKER_00]: Once the warped storm abates, those systems are discovered to be horrifically corrupted, that all the citizens have turned to chaos, it's all chaos, cults, etc. [SPEAKER_00]: where the story is interesting, is that some of those worlds that were then sent to be purged, is worth thirty. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there were, yeah, there were thirty of them were homeworld space marine chapters. [SPEAKER_01]: We can chapters are involved in this. [SPEAKER_01]: This guy probably got more Marines killed. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's up there. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: And so the silliest declares that these thirty chapters are corrupted because their gene seed is on these planets and these planets are corrupted. [SPEAKER_00]: I want to point out, the people he set are corrupted weren't there in the warp storm. [SPEAKER_00]: It is because their homeworld was covered by a warp storm. [SPEAKER_00]: Their homeworld was corrupted, therefore they are corrupted. [SPEAKER_00]: And he gives them all a choice. [SPEAKER_00]: The choice is die, right now, or go on a crusade and prove your loyalty to us, probably die in the process. [SPEAKER_00]: But all thirty legions agree, yep, I am not a heretic. [SPEAKER_00]: I am going to prove it by doing this. [SPEAKER_00]: Where do I have to go? [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, into the eye of terror, to purge systems inside the eye of terror. [SPEAKER_00]: All thirty are lost. [SPEAKER_00]: The stories of what happens to them today all get slaughtered. [SPEAKER_00]: except eight hundred years later. [SPEAKER_00]: So everyone's dead at this point, you know, who was alive at this point, some of this late legions start coming out of the warp. [SPEAKER_00]: And one such is a chapter called the Varpal Swords, and I love that name so much. [SPEAKER_00]: Come out of it and decide to start their own crusade. [SPEAKER_00]: And there's start their own crusade because while they were stuck in the warp, the Varpal Swords learned that Basilius was not a living saint, but was actually an agent of chaos. [SPEAKER_00]: all the powers that he was displaying, those were granted by the chaos gods. [SPEAKER_00]: I assume it was zinch, and an effort to deceive humanity and weaken it, which makes sense. [SPEAKER_00]: It's a great job. [SPEAKER_01]: He's making this a lot of them. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_00]: He's basically killed thirty space marine chapters and billions, probably trillions of imperial citizens. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: In the ultimate act of petty revenge, though, this is so fantastic, because they go about their crusade, and they go in fine. [SPEAKER_01]: This thing is his burial spot and legitimately dig up his bones and launch them into a storm. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was help. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the verbal sorts wanted to remove bacilia from history and a panic apparently. [SPEAKER_00]: Remember history also included grave robbery. [SPEAKER_00]: Who's a good move? [SPEAKER_00]: Fantastic. [SPEAKER_00]: It was a good move. [SPEAKER_00]: But that's, I like this one because it does. [SPEAKER_00]: It shows these crusades, how dark these crusades are. [SPEAKER_00]: Thirty chapters had no option, but to go be sacrificed because one person declared that they were heretics with no evidence by the way. [SPEAKER_00]: And that's how these Crusades are. [SPEAKER_00]: So with that, I want to break it and call it. [SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, there's a lot of Crusades. [SPEAKER_00]: We are going to cover it and much like we did the War of the Beast. [SPEAKER_00]: We'll be doing them in that session. [SPEAKER_00]: We'll be going through them really deeply and talking through all the key players and how it happened. [SPEAKER_00]: The goal of today was to use some of this smaller Crusades that are very short-writes the book to explain what a Crusade is. [SPEAKER_00]: And that helps us with some of the other. [SPEAKER_00]: We tell the stories later. [SPEAKER_00]: Next week, we've spent a lot of time on Imperium now, because between war, the beast, the fists, all that stuff, we're going to flip back to chaos. [SPEAKER_01]: And I want to do, Brad's photography, baby. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I want to get, we're going to do world leaders. [SPEAKER_00]: They've got a codex is now. [SPEAKER_00]: They actually had a new codex that came out not that long ago. [SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to be doing the origins of the world leaders, the tragedy that really is anger on. [SPEAKER_00]: And Grons of probably, I think one of the saddest stories of the [SPEAKER_00]: and obviously we'll also cover Karn at some of the devolution of their Legion and now the real, the more the kind of, I was a revolution, not a word, but the rebirth of the Legion. [SPEAKER_00]: It's more recently now that Angron is back and all this stuff's kind of going. [SPEAKER_01]: So we're just broken up at that point time. [SPEAKER_01]: We're going to that. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the world is we're effectively war bands for seven eight nine thousand years and now they are not. [SPEAKER_00]: So this has been John Barsati and Brad Chester. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's see you guys next week.
