I don't know about you, but I've always wondered Ryan. You know, we have a Kentucky has a deal with Nike. I've always wondered, like, how much do we make from that? Because we've been in Nike school forever? Well, the Harold Leader big shout out to John Hale. He got the information and UK has extended their deal with Nike for ten years, and we have the specifics and so if you read the article yet I have not. All right, So I think this would be a good chance for you to guess. I want you to guess. In the new deal with Nike, how much does Kentucky get paid a year to wear the swoop and to have all of its gear made by Nike?

Now, under the new deal, we get seven million dollars a year, So they ended up adding it five million dollars more seven million dollars a year, and instead of that one point seven million dollar bonus, Kentucky gets fifteen percent of everything you buy that has that Nike that has the Wildcats logo on it. Fifteen percent. Now I don't know how much that is drew because we've apparently not gotten that in the past, but that would strike me as being more than one point seven million dollars a year. That's just a gas But I just look at it this crowd. All of you pretty much have something on the gear that says Kentucky on it. So fifteen percent of everything that hasn on I'm just this is a complete ballpark. But I'm going to gus, what eleven ten eleven when all that gets added up? Would you what do you think? Sure?

So you get Shannon two hundred and fifty thousand dollars for winning the national championship in football, Okay, one of the chances we get that during this ten year deal zero. Okay, But this should tell you how much football is what drives it. How much do we get for winning a national championship in basketball? Fifty thousand dollars? So Nike values in national championship in basketball one fifth as much as football. That kind of surprises me because while football gets huge ratings, he doesn't get five times the ratings for like a national championship game women every other sport, so women's volleyball, women's softball, baseball, whatever, you win a national championship in that twenty five thousand dollars. So they basically value those sports half. So that's the that's the big picture. Now, I'm I'm Drew has always been. He's convinced me on the it ain't my money, it doesn't matter. But I do think it's interesting to compare it to other schools. Okay, so we've we have, I've sort of come up. I think Kentucky's probably looking eleven or twelve million dollars a year. Guess who gets the most? Do you know who gets the most? No Ohio State. Would you like to tell how much Ohio State gets a year from Nike? Remember we get I'm guessing eleven let's say eleven million dollars Ohio State twenty five million? Goodness?

Speaker 2: Here's the thing that frustrates me, Drew. Adidas, as you know, paid the most of any school in the country. Their biggest one they pay the most is Louisville. Guess how much louis gets from Adidas. Sixteen million dollars a year, which means Louisville is getting five million dollars a year more to wear Adidas. Then we're getting, at least, by my guesses, to wear Nike.

Speaker 2: Okay, Well, so the people that would make the case for Nike would say, first of all, Adidas gear sucks. If you've ever worn it, like, it's the worst. I mean, I have a couple things of Adidas. They always fall apart and they're not as cool. Secondly, there are players Drew you know this that the Nike thing, the Adidas thing for Louisville keeps them from going. I mean, Louisville fans think if they lose this Tyron Stokes, Tyron Stokes the number one player in the country, he'll be because he's a Nike kid. Is there any argument that you should take a company like Adidas. It could be New Balance, it could be whatever in order to make that extra money. Or do you say, look, we may get less, but we're part of the Nike bread and not a Kentucky. You're Nike's best basketball school, even Duke maybe one A and one B.

Speaker 6: I feel like going the other brands is something you do if you're a little more desperate and farther down the total pole, like a Maryland with under arm or even though that's local, you're just trying to reach and build a different brand. But when you're Nike and you're the Kentucky and you're the gold standard, you need to wear the gold standard. And I think most kids consider Nike that in athletic wear.

That's the other side of this argument. Will you lose players because of that?

I don't really know what they get out of that, but maybe just to say, because you know they have Kansas and Louisville, that's that's kind of what they had.

Which, by the way, I think a lot of that stuff's better. But the reason Jay and I got our media rights is Kentucky did that with media. Everybody was with IMG and everybody was kind of getting paid on a formula, and Kentucky went and there's this new company called JMI that said, we will blow these people out of the park. Just go with us, and so they did it, so Drew, They've shown they would do it on something else.

Speaker 6: Yeah, I just don't think you can give up what you have now. I mean, Kentucky's the first to get the new Kobe. I mean, there's so many things that Kentucky benefits from Nike, and that's what the kids want. Stokes is a great example. If he doesn't pick a Louisville, it's probably gonna be Kentucky or god forbid, Arkansas, both because of a Nike connection over Adidas.

Speaker 2: Yeah, well I found it interesting. I also think it interesting shows you how much more money's in college sports. Ten years ago, our total payment from Nike was three and a half million dollars. Ten years later, we're looking at eleven to twelve million dollars. So in ten years, the cost or the worth of college sports, at least in the eye of this publicly traded corporation that has to answer to shareholders. The cost is four times what it was ten years ago ran which you know, if we all think man tickets cost more, everything costs more, you're right. And here's an example. It costs four times more in ten years than it did before.

Speaker 7: You know, old guys like me probably think it doesn't matter that she doesn't matter. The logo, the brand, it one hundred percent absolutely matters. And that's a perfect example what has happened to it. The brand you the wear makes a huge difference, especially the players you have now and the players you're recruiting.

Speaker 6: I think it matters now more than ever two because their son and these deals in high school. Like DJ Wagner was on the cover of Nike stuff before he even got to Kentucky Stokes. In the same way, there's other examples. It's gonna be big in recruiting moving forward, but then so now, so that's going to go forward with Kentucky. Also, we got to see a little bit more on the basketball thing. I was looking at the schedule, Shannon in terms of the home sec schedule, and it is the most balanced I've ever seen in terms of so as a restaurant owner, here's a little secret. I look when the schedule comes out and I'm rooting for Saturday home games and I'm rooting for midweek road games. Right, I want Saturday home games because that gets a huge day of stuff Midweek Roman road and home doesn't make a huge difference in years past, like we have had an imbalance, maybe we would have six Saturday home games games only three year road or whatever. This year and the SEC put out an announcement yesterday they said they tried to balance it where every coaches have complained every team has five Saturday home games, five road games. Every team will have the same amount of nine o'clock games this year. I like that, remember, because we sometimes it's felt like because we were in that prime slot, we'd get all these nine o'clock games.

Speaker 3: Shit, yeah, I like that they're making a concerted effort to do that and not put Kentucky on these nine o'clock primetime games because they draw better ratings. But it's tough on the fans a lot of times. You know, a mid week game at nine o'clock's not over to eleven o'clock. If you're driving outside of Lexington, you may not be home till midnight. So I like the balance of.

Speaker 2: This A midwek I mean, again, completely on a selfish level, a midweek road nine o'clock game is like a desert from the bar. Sometimes for a seven o'clock it's okay, but for a nine o'clock you can forget it. But I also think if you look at our schedule, right, it is the most balanced. But I continue to think, man, we have all of our hard games on the road and all of our easy games at home, which I think makes it hard to hit the ceiling of a record we want, Like, I think it's gonna be impossible to go like sixteen and two. But I also think, right it means our floor. You remember last year we were flirting with five hundred a lot of the year. I don't think that's gonna be the case this year because our home games outside of Florida and Tennessee are actually pretty easy in SEC play.

Speaker 7: Yeah, maybe balanced in time slot, in day of the week, it ain't balancing an opponent. And every year Kentucky's gonna play twice Tennessee, Vanderbilt and whoever, probably the best team is in the league.

And then Tennessee's gonna be good most years. So one of the teams we play is gonna be good. This is the price you drew to get every game on it. Remember, I mean our non conference games. You all will be able to watch all of our non conference games on a network except maybe one. These other teams, they have like eight or nine games that are on the app in the non conference. The price you pay for that is you have to play the best team in the league twice.

We had almost no regulations on what people had to do with cemeteries until like nineteen eighty four, so if you were born before nineteen eighty four, they kind of could have done whatever they wanted. Now. I had another person write me though, and say that after those regulations, it made cemeteries more difficult to maintain, so that's why nobody builds any more cemeteries now. It's funny because he seems like a really nice guy, and Mark Pope, if you remember earlier, essentially said it's Louisll's fault. At games November eleventh. Pat Kelsey was like, yeah, it might be our fault. We screwed this up. But we're playing at November eleventh, and he kind of insinuated it would never be that early again in the year. So I was glad to see that.

So that's that's why, and so we have to go to Louisville for both of them this year.

We don't have the star power like we had in the past, but we do have depth in it's all around, so that's gonna aid us. Coincidentally, that applies to my second point with the basketball team. Could you imagine, with Colt and his staff, with the coaching acumen, if they employed like a platoon system where each team with reserves no, you could play different defenses and spress and just.

But we have to get out of our mindset, Drew that that is something we can continue to do. I want you to just take a step back and think about who was on that team Okay, you had Carl Town's and Devin Book two of the twenty five best players in the NBA were on that team. Tyler Yulss, arguably one of the best college point guards we have ever had, was on that team. The Harrison Twins, two of the most clutch players we have ever had, were on that team. I just named you five guys, and I didn't even name our first team All American from that team, which was Willie Cauley Stine. Trey Lyles is still in the NBA from that team. So I just named seven dudes that are on most teams they'd be on at Kentucky, Ryan the best player that would be on it. And there were seven of them on one team. And by the way, the eighth, nineth, and tenth were guys like Dakari Johnson, Alex Poythus, and Marcus Lee, not exactly like terrible players. I love this group, but this ain't the same thing. This isn't the same thing. This is a group of dudes where I think the first team is gonna be the best team, and I think they're gonna be a lot better than the second team. And hopefully members of the second team can get in but Ryan, you can't act like twenty fifteen is something that's replicable.
