<v Speaker 1>This is a podcast from Minute Media. <v Speaker 2>Hello everybody, and welcome back to the Shirley You Can't <v Speaker 2>Be Serious Podcast. We are back again with our friends <v Speaker 2>Brad and Jeff from the Film By Podcast, ready to <v Speaker 2>sync our teeth into some nasty, nasty sharky goo called <v Speaker 2>Jaws The Revenge. <v Speaker 3>I'm gonna go ahead and say it. Merry Christmas. Yes, yes, <v Speaker 3>thank you, it's another Christmas movie. <v Speaker 4>Hey, before we move on, this is sort of completing <v Speaker 4>our series on the summer of nineteen eighty seven. These <v Speaker 4>movies and albums are thirty five years old. So we've <v Speaker 4>gone through White Snake nineteen eighty seven, We've gone through <v Speaker 4>Motley Crue, Girls, Girls Girls, we did RoboCop and Predator, <v Speaker 4>and now today we are comparing two of the worst <v Speaker 4>movies of the nineteen eighties just happened to be released <v Speaker 4>within a month of each other. Can eighty seven Superman <v Speaker 4>for the Question for Piece and Jaws don't call it <v Speaker 4>for the Revenge. <v Speaker 2>It's very questionable as to whether they even consider Jaws <v Speaker 2>three like is do they just disregard it for this <v Speaker 2>movie or do we think that there's been a massive change. <v Speaker 5>I think they disregard it and it's Quaid was older <v Speaker 5>than he was. <v Speaker 3>And he was also an engineer for Sea World. He <v Speaker 3>was not a marine biologist, so I can always do <v Speaker 3>a career change. Yeah, I guess. <v Speaker 4>Now. <v Speaker 3>My understanding is that this is one of those situations, <v Speaker 3>and we have this happening all the time in Hollywood <v Speaker 3>now where we just ignore several sequels and we do <v Speaker 3>the true quote unquote sequel to an original. This is <v Speaker 3>considered Jaws three as far as the you know, the <v Speaker 3>studio is concerned. <v Speaker 4>Okay, before we move on to Jaws four, tell me <v Speaker 4>your opinions on Jaws three. <v Speaker 5>I enjoy Jaws three if you take away the fact <v Speaker 5>that they're Brodie's I think you just have a good <v Speaker 5>shark movie. There's no you know, it's just a story <v Speaker 5>about a shark, you know, attacking SeaWorld, and it's it's <v Speaker 5>really kind of cool. The acting in and is so <v Speaker 5>over the top because apparently everybody was coked out of <v Speaker 5>their mind, especially that is Quaite. The acting is so <v Speaker 5>over the top, but you do get some good scenes <v Speaker 5>with actors working with like killer whales, dolphins and stuff <v Speaker 5>like that. There's a lot of scenes where I'm like, wow, <v Speaker 5>that's best Armstrong on the Killer well, and so I <v Speaker 5>actually like Jaws three a lot more than Jaws The Revenge. <v Speaker 5>But I think it's a fun movie. I mean because <v Speaker 5>it it's almost not that they play back into it <v Speaker 5>a little bit of the Brodi's being like, oh, well, <v Speaker 5>I know sharks they're killers, but they don't reflect on <v Speaker 5>it as much as The Revenge of Oh They're coming <v Speaker 5>after me. It just more is so of coincidence. <v Speaker 3>I think the Moderator and Billy Madison would have a <v Speaker 3>field day with what you just said. I'm gonna I'm <v Speaker 3>gonna say this, Y'all's three D is a dumpster fire <v Speaker 3>of a movie. And if the Shirley listeners have not <v Speaker 3>seen it, save your time. If you want to see <v Speaker 3>Lewis Gosset Junior in the water, go go rent the <v Speaker 3>deep because you're gonna be way happier with him and <v Speaker 3>Jack lambissit. And as far as Leah Thompson, watch her <v Speaker 3>and I don't know anything else her end in his <v Speaker 3>quaid because. <v Speaker 2>What about Howard the Duck? <v Speaker 3>Yes, absolutely worst film of nineteen eighty six or tied. <v Speaker 3>I guess we could say Jason Yes for worst film <v Speaker 3>of nineteen six I'll take her in that every day <v Speaker 3>of the week and twice on Sunday over over Jall's <v Speaker 3>three D. <v Speaker 2>Whoao wow? <v Speaker 5>Tell me that a story based on a theme park <v Speaker 5>that builds a lagoon that leans out to the ocean <v Speaker 5>and a shark accidentally gets in could maybe happen as <v Speaker 5>opposed to a descendant from nineteen seventy five of a <v Speaker 5>shark that his target it did. A family is a <v Speaker 5>better film than just the Sea World Adventure. <v Speaker 3>I'm not going to discuss the biology of sharks and <v Speaker 3>and how many eggs they lay or how Yeah, I'm <v Speaker 3>not gonna do that, or their motivations. What I am <v Speaker 3>going to say, I don't know what they. <v Speaker 5>Do do They swim, They eat, and make baby shirts. <v Speaker 5>That's all they do. That's all they do. They don't <v Speaker 5>take things personally. <v Speaker 3>They say what you will about Jaws Revenge, but I <v Speaker 3>will take any frame from Jaws Revenge and happily watch <v Speaker 3>that over the terrible three D special effects of stuff <v Speaker 3>floating at us in Jaws three D. It's kind of <v Speaker 3>leading with our final judgment. Huh, I'm sorry, Yeah, this <v Speaker 3>is Jaws three D versus Jaws Revenge. You know, I'll <v Speaker 3>save my my thoughts for Jaws against against soups. But <v Speaker 3>I just I can't believe Brad's saying, how amazing Jaws <v Speaker 3>three D. <v Speaker 5>Well, Well, here one last thing about Jaws three. Like <v Speaker 5>I said, if you take away the Jaws title, if <v Speaker 5>you would have called it something else, it's kind of <v Speaker 5>like a horror film. There's a lot deep bluesy no <v Speaker 5>but no, but Jaws three they show a lot of blood. <v Speaker 5>Have you guys watched it very recently, yes, But it's <v Speaker 5>very like a sigh. <v Speaker 3>It's actually at. <v Speaker 5>The beginning like a horror film, not more of like <v Speaker 5>a C terror adventure. They set it up like a <v Speaker 5>horror film, and I think, I don't know, it stands <v Speaker 5>a little bit different for it. <v Speaker 2>But the last time that I saw Jaws three D <v Speaker 2>was twenty nine years ago, almost exactly up until my <v Speaker 2>dad said, get up, we're not watching the rest of <v Speaker 2>this movie. I walked out. <v Speaker 3>You walked out of the theater on Jaws three D. <v Speaker 2>The first time I was that was a like a <v Speaker 2>revelatory moment, like I'm I mean in nineteen eighty three, <v Speaker 2>I was eight seven. Maybe it was like you're allowed <v Speaker 2>to just walk out of them? Is that something you <v Speaker 2>can do. But sure enough we did it, and he <v Speaker 2>was just he was appalled, not so appalled that he <v Speaker 2>didn't Maybe I can't remember he took me to Jaws <v Speaker 2>Revenge or not. But so just I'll throw I'll throw <v Speaker 2>my two cents in on these, on these measurements. And <v Speaker 2>by the way, I'll start off with Superman three, just <v Speaker 2>because it's come in. It's come in a couple times. Here, <v Speaker 2>Superman three on IMDb gets a five point zero. You <v Speaker 2>mentioned that Supergirl is really the next in the series <v Speaker 2>and probably the worst movie. It got a four point four, <v Speaker 2>and then Superman four got a three point seven. Jaws <v Speaker 2>three D also got a three point seven. Jaws the <v Speaker 2>Revenge three point zero. <v Speaker 4>Nobody cans zero. <v Speaker 2>I am not saying that I agree with that, but <v Speaker 2>let the record show that as far as the fan <v Speaker 2>vote is concerned, there is no question that Jaws the <v Speaker 2>Revenge is the worst of these sequence of movies. <v Speaker 3>Okay, take this to the town council, Larry Vaughan, and <v Speaker 3>I will demand a recount. <v Speaker 5>I can accept that a three point seven over a <v Speaker 5>three point zero. I can accept that as far as <v Speaker 5>the ratings are concerned. <v Speaker 3>Oh and it's. <v Speaker 5>Just saying it's just a little bit better than Jaws <v Speaker 5>the event, just a little bit. <v Speaker 4>I'm calling may Or Murray Hamilton and raising Kine about that. <v Speaker 2>Just for a little bit of perspective. The director of <v Speaker 2>Jaws three D is the guy who designed the shark <v Speaker 2>that wouldn't work for Jaws one. <v Speaker 3>But we started our list, we started. <v Speaker 2>Our last episode with how did this movie get made? Right? Like, <v Speaker 2>how did this steamy pilot crap end up in theaters <v Speaker 2>in front of the public who was anxious for something <v Speaker 2>not what we got right? And so we talked about <v Speaker 2>what happened with Superman four. It was a huge budget slash. <v Speaker 2>It was the sal Kinds basically had to give away <v Speaker 2>the rights for five million dollars because they were out <v Speaker 2>of money. Then the Cannon group who took the movie <v Speaker 2>had to slice the budget from thirty six million down <v Speaker 2>to seventeen million, which is a gigantic cut, and then <v Speaker 2>cut twenty five percent of the movie that they filmed. <v Speaker 2>These are all reasons for a bad movie, But as <v Speaker 2>Jason pointed out, with Jaws four, you've still got universal money, <v Speaker 2>like you've got major studio money. It was a very <v Speaker 2>expensive movie. You got the director of the taking a <v Speaker 2>pelllem one two three, which is I mean an Emmy <v Speaker 2>winning director, right, Yeah, You've got Michael Caine, You've got <v Speaker 2>Lance Guest, who was super hot at the time. I <v Speaker 2>don't mean like in an attractive way. I mean like <v Speaker 2>he was a hot commodity. <v Speaker 3>Aman. <v Speaker 2>He's a good looking guy too. <v Speaker 3>I'll say it with the Lance Guest with the beard. <v Speaker 3>Come on, yeah, no, that's the look he needed. <v Speaker 5>He was the last we knew him as the last Starfighter. <v Speaker 2>That's yah, it was the last Starfighter. So how with <v Speaker 2>all of that do you get Jaws the Revenge? And <v Speaker 2>it's three point zero nastiness. <v Speaker 4>Here's the one thing you're also forgetting is that the <v Speaker 4>star the leading lady, was married to the studio head. <v Speaker 2>Sid Sheinberg, who is responsible for the first Jows. He <v Speaker 2>is responsible for getting Steven Spielberg to make the first Jaws. <v Speaker 2>He was president back then, still president in nineteen eighty <v Speaker 2>six when he makes a call and says we need <v Speaker 2>to make Jaws four. How does that happen? <v Speaker 5>He said, I want my wife out of the house <v Speaker 5>twitter in the Bahamas for like six months as sick <v Speaker 5>of her. Is the only thing I could think of <v Speaker 5>He's just like, gave her something. <v Speaker 3>To do, he hung her out to dry. <v Speaker 2>So I don't think that he anticipated obviously that this <v Speaker 2>was going to be the train wreck that it was, right, <v Speaker 2>but why did they decide to do it? So I'm <v Speaker 2>going to take you guys back to nineteen eighty six. <v Speaker 2>Everybody excited about that. You guys are super familiar with <v Speaker 2>that year. <v Speaker 3>We know a little bit about nineteen twelve. <v Speaker 2>Bets, just just in case our listeners don't know, the <v Speaker 2>film by guys have a running series dedicated to the <v Speaker 2>movies of nineteen eighty six. Jason just got off of <v Speaker 2>an episode that he did with them on what movie I've. <v Speaker 4>Done Legal Eagles, We've done the Hitcher. <v Speaker 3>Kind of poetic since we're talking about these two movies <v Speaker 3>for eighty seven, but we're doing like the worst week ever. <v Speaker 3>We're gonna be talking about Howard the Duck and Under <v Speaker 3>the Cherry Moon. So and Jason's coming back for that one. <v Speaker 2>I'm so glad you said it, because you've named both <v Speaker 2>of the movies. Now. So for nineteen eighty six, Universal <v Speaker 2>had two major investments. One was Legal Eagles. They spent <v Speaker 2>like forty million dollars, which I mean that's a lot <v Speaker 2>of money for a courtroom drama, right, courtroom comedy, Yeah, drama. <v Speaker 2>That's a whole lot, and it's largely because of salaries <v Speaker 2>and stuff. They made some money on it, but not <v Speaker 2>nearly enough to justify a budget that big. And then <v Speaker 2>they followed it right up with an even bigger budget <v Speaker 2>for Howard the Duck, which was the biggest stinker potentially <v Speaker 2>of the eighties, if not nineteen eighty six. <v Speaker 4>Be sure to listen to your podcast to determine how <v Speaker 4>those shake out as the worst of eighty six. <v Speaker 2>So here it is, they've just finished the summer of <v Speaker 2>nineteen eighty six. Sid Sheinberg is sitting in his office thinking, <v Speaker 2>how the heck do I come back from this dismal <v Speaker 2>summer that I've just had. It's September or October, and <v Speaker 2>he thinks, I think that I can make another Jaws movie. <v Speaker 4>That's not a bad idea, it's not a great idea. <v Speaker 4>It is a great idea. <v Speaker 2>So there's Sid Sheinberg and he's thinking to himself, we've <v Speaker 2>just laid a couple of eggs here. What do we <v Speaker 2>do to come back from it? Let's look at somebody <v Speaker 2>who's been super successful in the summer of nineteen eighty six, Jason, <v Speaker 2>what do you think the best movie of nineteen eighty <v Speaker 2>six was this movie. <v Speaker 4>Of nineteen eighty six, Spike The Football is Aliens, without <v Speaker 4>a doubt, unquestionably James Cameron's masterpiece. <v Speaker 2>And so Sid Sheinberg is looking at that same storyline. <v Speaker 2>He's thinking, huh, a woman hero fights a terrible, sharp <v Speaker 2>toothed monster. I wonder if I can do something it's <v Speaker 2>got to be I mean, i'm it makes sense. I'm <v Speaker 2>there's conjecture here. There's no question. There's some conjects, but <v Speaker 2>I mean, it's pretty easy to make those mental jumps, <v Speaker 2>isn't it. <v Speaker 4>So he calls Sigourney Weaver. <v Speaker 2>Yeah, no, he now this is interesting. He went home <v Speaker 2>and told his wife, Hey, I think I'm going to <v Speaker 2>do another Jaws movie, and she didn't believe him. And <v Speaker 2>then she really didn't believe that he was going to <v Speaker 2>cast her in the movie because she hadn't acted in <v Speaker 2>eight years. Movie that she was in before this movie <v Speaker 2>was nineteen forty one, the Big Spielberg Egg. <v Speaker 3>Seventy. <v Speaker 5>We ripped that apart on a film by There you go. <v Speaker 3>Hated to do it, but we did. <v Speaker 5>But do you think it's she's actually not bad in <v Speaker 5>the movie. I mean, she's a pretty good actress. <v Speaker 3>No, she's not. <v Speaker 4>And you know what I texted you, guys, she's forty <v Speaker 4>nine in nineteen eighty six when she films this movie, <v Speaker 4>she looks seventy five. And I'm sorry, I hate to <v Speaker 4>be the one who says that I'm forty nine years old. <v Speaker 4>I hope I don't look that old. <v Speaker 2>Ye, well, she looked like she was in her sixties <v Speaker 2>back in seventy five. <v Speaker 3>Let me let me ask this, because we know we <v Speaker 3>got universal money here. Is there any hope that maybe <v Speaker 3>they wanted to kind of age her to get a <v Speaker 3>little bit closer to Michael Caine and and also be <v Speaker 3>believable as as Lance Guest's mom because he's twenty seven. <v Speaker 3>And when this movie comes out and the math holds up, <v Speaker 3>you know, you know, if Ellen Brody has her first <v Speaker 3>kid when she's twenty two. But you're right, she life <v Speaker 3>on the island has been tough for her. <v Speaker 2>She's a little too much fun, a little too much <v Speaker 2>beach done, little too much. Yeah, and let me just <v Speaker 2>I'm gonna throw this in on my on my theory <v Speaker 2>on aliens. The tagline for Aliens was this time it's war. <v Speaker 2>The tagline for Josh the Revenges this time it's personal. <v Speaker 2>That's a wonderful difference, guys, one word different, I think. Man. <v Speaker 3>By the way, you could almost switch those taglines for <v Speaker 3>the movies and it still makes sense, right, yeah, right, wow. <v Speaker 2>By the way, this is another just a sidebar. There <v Speaker 2>were rumors back then that suggested that Sid Sheinberg and <v Speaker 2>Universal president Frank Price had started a heat argument on <v Speaker 2>the fifteenth floor of the studio building because they each <v Speaker 2>blamed the other one for giving Howard the Duck the <v Speaker 2>green light that actually ended up in a full on fistfight. <v Speaker 3>I believe that. <v Speaker 5>I believe that. <v Speaker 2>Yeah, well, Sid Sheinberg denies it, says it's not true, <v Speaker 2>But I like that story. <v Speaker 4>Oh front of them green light to jows of revenge. <v Speaker 4>It's got to be Sid Scheinberg. I mean, there's no question, <v Speaker 4>that's no. <v Speaker 2>Question that Sid Sheinberg. So here's what happened. Sid Sheinberg <v Speaker 2>gets what he believes to be a brilliant idea. We're <v Speaker 2>gon we're gonna steal the thunder of Aliens, and we're <v Speaker 2>gonna make it in the Bahamas. I mean, it's like <v Speaker 2>we're taking a James Bond movie, right, and we're gonna <v Speaker 2>get some quality actors and put in it. We got <v Speaker 2>this guy from Heartbreak Ridge. By the way, Heartbreak Ridge <v Speaker 2>one of the first episodes that I listened to that <v Speaker 2>you guys did, loved it, Thank you. But you've got <v Speaker 2>mister Mario Van Peeples who was like, no, I'm not <v Speaker 2>gonna do I saw Jows three D. You know I'm <v Speaker 2>not gonna do that. And they're like, we'll give you <v Speaker 2>a lot of money and you can have complete control <v Speaker 2>of the character and how it's played. It's like, Okay, <v Speaker 2>I'll do it. <v Speaker 4>I'm gonna do it Jamaican the entire time. <v Speaker 5>Yea, not the entire time. Just not the entire time, <v Speaker 5>not the entire time, just some times when to say, Mike, <v Speaker 5>get those conks men stuff. <v Speaker 2>Can you live? <v Speaker 3>I almost feel like the casting that can you can you? Oh, <v Speaker 3>you can do it? You make an accent. Yeah, I'm <v Speaker 3>just gonna use the word mon a lot and people people. <v Speaker 2>Go for it. <v Speaker 4>No, but I stayed a holiday and express. <v Speaker 2>The other key ingredient. You've got aliens, You've got we've <v Speaker 2>got to recover from Howard the duck. And you've got <v Speaker 2>my wife. I can pay her a lot of money <v Speaker 2>to do this movie and get her out of my <v Speaker 2>hair maybe. <v Speaker 3>And then my mistress is in town. <v Speaker 2>But what sealed the deal for him were the high <v Speaker 2>TV ratings that Jaws one and Josh two were getting <v Speaker 2>at the time. They were blown away. They're like, wow, <v Speaker 2>these these movies are still popular. Let's give it another <v Speaker 2>try while it's still got gas in the tank, right, <v Speaker 2>he sends to me. So he calls the director, Joseph Sargent, <v Speaker 2>and he's like, Okay, I don't really think I can <v Speaker 2>do a Jaws movie. I'm that's not my style at all. <v Speaker 2>And he's like, no, no, no, no, I want this <v Speaker 2>to be like a relationship, character driven movie. This needs <v Speaker 2>to be a throwback to the original, but more about <v Speaker 2>the characters and the relationships between them, and you again <v Speaker 2>have control. He's like, wow, okay, well, I guess I <v Speaker 2>can give that a try. He's like, okay, great, I <v Speaker 2>need it by July of next year. This was September <v Speaker 2>or October. That's nine months. Again. This is why we <v Speaker 2>have the stinker that we have is because they've forced <v Speaker 2>them to do a movie. This time. They have a <v Speaker 2>bunch of sharks, a bunch of bruss if you will. <v Speaker 2>And what was the thing that everybody kept saying during <v Speaker 2>the original Jaws? They announced it over the innercarm. <v Speaker 5>The shark is not working. The shark is not working. <v Speaker 2>You got it? And they had those same issues despite <v Speaker 2>the fact that they took like ten different sharks down there. <v Speaker 2>They repeatedly did not work. Lance Guest said, I was <v Speaker 2>routinely sent home for the day because the shark was <v Speaker 2>not working. <v Speaker 5>Wow. <v Speaker 4>They really did not learn any of the lessons from Joss, right, No, <v Speaker 4>I mean one of the great things about Joss We've <v Speaker 4>talked about this. You sense the shark, you see the <v Speaker 4>fin the music tells you where it is. And this <v Speaker 4>it's like rah, just right across the screen. You're like, <v Speaker 4>what is that plastic piece of crap that we're looking at? <v Speaker 3>So they somehow got Michael Caine. <v Speaker 5>Michael Caine had a reputation for taking some stinkers but <v Speaker 5>doing it very smartly, like buying a house, sending his <v Speaker 5>kids to college, things like that. That started with Beyond <v Speaker 5>the Sign of the Adventure the Hand in nineteen eighty <v Speaker 5>one and this. You know a lot of movies you're like, <v Speaker 5>why is Michael Cain in this, But he always says, hey, <v Speaker 5>bought me my summer house, got my foot kids through college, <v Speaker 5>got me this vacation, fixed my roof. So I mean <v Speaker 5>he did them and I can say that in none <v Speaker 5>of those films does they look like he's just like <v Speaker 5>I'm just gonna walk. He does go full on Michael Kanish, <v Speaker 5>which is always fun to watch. <v Speaker 3>I know this about Michael Kane. Also, he's a huge <v Speaker 3>fan of Jaws and decided, hey, I just want to <v Speaker 3>be a part of that pop culture piece of film <v Speaker 3>to say that I'm in the Jaws world. Count me <v Speaker 3>in and it shows, like when he plays Hoky, he's <v Speaker 3>having a fun time Doug. To Brad's point, he's not <v Speaker 3>phoning it in. He's having a good time down there. <v Speaker 3>He's one of the things that works in this movie. Yeah, <v Speaker 3>absolutely he is. <v Speaker 2>When he was asked in interviews about it later, they said, <v Speaker 2>have you seen the movie and he says, no, but <v Speaker 2>I've been in the house that it bought and it's <v Speaker 2>very lovely. <v Speaker 3>Here you go, here's the exact quote. <v Speaker 4>Okay, listen to this, soak this in because it's marvelous. <v Speaker 2>Right. <v Speaker 4>I have never seen it, but by all accounts it's terrible. However, <v Speaker 4>I have seen the house that it built and it <v Speaker 4>is terrific. He also said, kind of, Brad, what you <v Speaker 4>were saying, I want an Oscar. I built a house, <v Speaker 4>had a great holiday. Not bad for a flop movie. <v Speaker 2>He won the Oscar that year for the the movie <v Speaker 2>that he had done the year before, Hannah and her Sisters, <v Speaker 2>and this movie. Because they were trying to squeeze it <v Speaker 2>in such an impossible time frame. He said, can I have, <v Speaker 2>you know, just a couple of days off to go <v Speaker 2>up and be at the Oscars? And they said, no, no, <v Speaker 2>you can't, And so he won the Oscar but was <v Speaker 2>not able to be there because of this movie. <v Speaker 4>Jaws the Revenge was released July seventeenth, nineteen eighty seven. <v Speaker 4>It finished third at the box office. Number one was Rocop, <v Speaker 4>Number two was a Disney re release of Snow White Yep. <v Speaker 3>Three was jos The Revenge. <v Speaker 5>Did any of you guys see this in the theater? <v Speaker 2>No? I saw it in the theater. Wow, I did. <v Speaker 5>My brother took me to see it. He had just <v Speaker 5>turned thirteen. So this movie was PG thirteen, even though <v Speaker 5>I think three is a lot more goorier, but he <v Speaker 5>took me to see it, and there are two different <v Speaker 5>endings to this film. We will cover that, Okay, yeah <v Speaker 5>for sure. But yeah, I actually did see this in <v Speaker 5>the theater. <v Speaker 2>I don't mind. I mean, we could talk about that <v Speaker 2>now because I told I told Jason because we're talking <v Speaker 2>about it, and he's like, how long has it been <v Speaker 2>since you've seen it? And I said, I think I <v Speaker 2>saw it in the theater and that's the only time <v Speaker 2>I saw it. And he's like, so the end and <v Speaker 2>I'm like, yeah, the shark gets impaled. He goes yeah, <v Speaker 2>and then it explodes and I'm like what. He's like, yeah, <v Speaker 2>the shark explodes for literally no reason at all, and <v Speaker 2>I'm like, man, I don't remember that far. And so <v Speaker 2>we keep on talking and he mentions that, you know, <v Speaker 2>Jake gets eaten by the shark and then miraculously, even <v Speaker 2>though he's obviously drowned and gored to death, just appears <v Speaker 2>back at the end and it's completely fine. <v Speaker 3>I'm like, he did, I don't remember that fight either. <v Speaker 2>Yeah, well that's because in the theatrical cut, neither one <v Speaker 2>of those things happened. There was no shark exploding, and <v Speaker 2>he was dead. He was dead dead, and it went <v Speaker 2>from impaled shark and you know, the ship getting taken <v Speaker 2>down cut to they're leaving in the plane. He's saying, <v Speaker 2>get on, you know, hurry and get on Ellen Brody <v Speaker 2>because you're going to miss flight. That was it. There <v Speaker 2>was no swimming, there was no none of that, and <v Speaker 2>definitely no exploding shark. What happened was they showed the <v Speaker 2>theatrical cut, everybody hated it, and they thought the way <v Speaker 2>to fix it was to put an exploding shark at <v Speaker 2>the end and then save Mario. <v Speaker 5>People's I recently watched it. It is on to be. <v Speaker 5>It is streaming on to be, So that's the version <v Speaker 5>I watched, and I was like, Okay, where's the impairment <v Speaker 5>and is this going to be I remember like, is <v Speaker 5>this going to be the version where Mario van Peebles <v Speaker 5>lives or not? And I remember the impairment was kind <v Speaker 5>of unique, you know, because it does bring down the <v Speaker 5>entire ship. But I believe these are clips from the <v Speaker 5>very first film. <v Speaker 2>This makes as much sense as a great white shark <v Speaker 2>swimming five thousand miles at the same speed that a <v Speaker 2>plane flash. <v Speaker 3>Yeah, yeah, real quick, just because I'm starting to feel <v Speaker 3>like an impostor, and I don't want you guys to <v Speaker 3>drop me like a chum marker. Oh I'm gonna go <v Speaker 3>hot take. I love Jaws of Revenge. I've got plenty, <v Speaker 3>I got plenty to say about what's wrong with it, <v Speaker 3>but I I freaking love Jaws the Revenge. <v Speaker 4>Brad knows this for years and years because. <v Speaker 3>We've debated the rage debate over this, But I love <v Speaker 3>the film, so I'll have lots of good to say. <v Speaker 2>Let me let me say this because this is a <v Speaker 2>This is a good segue into talking about what the <v Speaker 2>what the movie did right? But phone conversation with Jason <v Speaker 2>this morning, as I'm driving over here today, I was <v Speaker 2>actually really surprised at how much I liked Draws the <v Speaker 2>Revenge right, because again, I hadn't seen it since nineteen <v Speaker 2>eighty seven, and I remembered it being horrible, and when <v Speaker 2>I watched it again, I was like, well, it's really <v Speaker 2>horrible in certain areas, which are really big areas, but <v Speaker 2>it's not horrible as a whole. There are some decent parts, <v Speaker 2>so we can. <v Speaker 5>I'm waiting to hear this, Chris. <v Speaker 2>I'm giving death stare, arms crossed. <v Speaker 3>Yeah, Okay, so. <v Speaker 2>I think then that probably the appropriate thing to do <v Speaker 2>at this moment is to have Brad tell us, Brad, <v Speaker 2>what did this movie get right? What they do right? <v Speaker 5>I think the Bahamas works. Using Using the Bahamas works, <v Speaker 5>It's very beautiful. You get a lot of clear shots, <v Speaker 5>like the shot of them looking for Ellen and the <v Speaker 5>shark coming out of the water, the aerial view with <v Speaker 5>the ship. I'm like, that's a really good shot, and <v Speaker 5>that's the whole ocean. So I think a lot of <v Speaker 5>that stuff they got right. I think the casting was <v Speaker 5>obviously very good, but using the Brodie's and the personal stuff, <v Speaker 5>so it just it just gotta I'm trying to think <v Speaker 5>if there's anything. <v Speaker 3>Else good, come on, man, in it. <v Speaker 5>I don't. I mean no, I can't think of anything <v Speaker 5>else that's really that good in it. <v Speaker 4>Jason, Okay, I don't want to get in front of <v Speaker 4>Jeff on this stuff, but. <v Speaker 2>Jeff is we're saving Jeff with the end. <v Speaker 5>OKAE got some good stuff. <v Speaker 4>So just to kind of expand on what Brad said, <v Speaker 4>I think that the cast is really good. <v Speaker 3>Right. <v Speaker 4>You've got Michael Caine, who is an Oscar winner. You <v Speaker 4>bring back Lorrangary, who you know played Ellen, brody and <v Speaker 4>and she was solid. I thought she did a good jake. <v Speaker 4>You know, Mari Van Peebles, I liked him. He was fun. <v Speaker 4>The accent was a little bit here and there, but <v Speaker 4>still good character, a lot of fun. Lance Guest, Last Starfighter, <v Speaker 4>sign me up right. My favorite character in the entire <v Speaker 4>movie is Carla, the girl who plays Michael's wife. Really, <v Speaker 4>she was sweet and lovely. Karen Young when she is <v Speaker 4>helping Michael snap out of his depression by you know, <v Speaker 4>inviting him to climb under the sheets, I was like, <v Speaker 4>this girl's awesome, right, ye rubber banding her panties at <v Speaker 4>his face, panties. Fact that Roy Schard didn't come back, <v Speaker 4>I thought that was a good move. <v Speaker 3>Smart. <v Speaker 4>You know. The fact that he of fear is one <v Speaker 4>of the things that did not work for me, and <v Speaker 4>we can talk about that here in a second. Listen, <v Speaker 4>the return of missus Kintner was yes, gold. <v Speaker 5>I didn't notice that until this wat It. <v Speaker 3>Didn't do a very good job. <v Speaker 4>Of making you see that, but she's there, She's at <v Speaker 4>the post funeral lunch, and I'm with you. I think <v Speaker 4>the Bahamas were beautiful to look at. Unfortunately, when you <v Speaker 4>pair those Bahama scenes up with the backlot at Universal. <v Speaker 3>It becomes so clear and I'm gonna give one. <v Speaker 4>More thing, and then on Jeff, I'm gonna get out <v Speaker 4>of your way. This is the eighties lover in me okay, <v Speaker 4>when they break into You've Got It All by the <v Speaker 4>Jets at that dance party number three hit in nineteen <v Speaker 4>eighty six. It was on the Makeout List of eighty six. <v Speaker 4>It just brought back a lot of nostalgic memories. Now <v Speaker 4>listen before I get out, before I turn it over <v Speaker 4>to you, we are doing a bonus Patreon episode where <v Speaker 4>we deep dive on that particular song. Yay. So there <v Speaker 4>is a very interesting story behind this song. It's gonna <v Speaker 4>be a bonus episode. Follow us on Patreon. <v Speaker 5>Check it out over there. <v Speaker 3>All right, Jeff, it's all the floors yours bro way, Jeff, <v Speaker 3>before you go, yeah, yeah, let's hear from you. <v Speaker 2>I know that's all right. I want to save you <v Speaker 2>for last. But just another shameless plug. Jason and I <v Speaker 2>have covered Jaws of the original movie versus Jurassic Park, <v Speaker 2>and we were talking about Lee Fierro. Missus Kittener thirty <v Speaker 2>years later, goes to a restaurant somewhere in Martha's vineyard <v Speaker 2>area and looks at the menu and sees that there's <v Speaker 2>an Alex Kittner berger, and she says to the waitress. <v Speaker 2>She's like, oh my gosh, I can't believe this is <v Speaker 2>on here. She goes, I actually played the part of <v Speaker 2>Missus Kittner in the original Jaws movie. And the waitress <v Speaker 2>is like, oh my gosh, hold on, she leaves, She <v Speaker 2>comes back and brings the restaurant owner with her. The <v Speaker 2>restaurant owner is the kid who played Alex Kittner, and <v Speaker 2>that's why they have that burger love Man. <v Speaker 3>What a great story. <v Speaker 2>So I will just say for my part, they came <v Speaker 2>into this movie with the idea of doing character development <v Speaker 2>and relationship development. I think they did a really good <v Speaker 2>job with that. I mean, the interaction between the characters <v Speaker 2>is really good, and it's actually really well shot for <v Speaker 2>like a drama. If you could only take out the <v Speaker 2>shark scenes and change the storyline, you might have a <v Speaker 2>good movie. The problem is the shark and the storyline <v Speaker 2>are the two biggest pieces of the movie. So despite <v Speaker 2>the fact that you've got what appears to be some <v Speaker 2>really great acting, great character writing, great relationship writing and <v Speaker 2>great directing in the non special effects area. It's just <v Speaker 2>not enough to say this movie, but those parts where <v Speaker 2>I thought very well done. And that was why I <v Speaker 2>said to Jason, I really find myself enjoying this a <v Speaker 2>lot more than I thought I was going to. <v Speaker 3>Well, listen, all three of you actually did a lot <v Speaker 3>of the heavy lifting for me just then. And I <v Speaker 3>don't want to retread the same water too much, but <v Speaker 3>I will say sensational cast. <v Speaker 2>Nice. <v Speaker 3>I love the cast, you know. I enjoy seeing Michael <v Speaker 3>Kaine in anything, even the smaller roles like the little <v Speaker 3>girl Judith Barci. <v Speaker 2>I think your name is, you know. <v Speaker 3>Fantastic, and she has some tough dialogue if you think <v Speaker 3>about some of the conversations that she has. I know, <v Speaker 3>I know she's ten playing five, but but she does <v Speaker 3>it really well. I think I absolutely love Lance Guest <v Speaker 3>in this Sorry brad Leagues above Dennis Quaid. And I'm <v Speaker 3>not saying they're filmographies. I'm just saying, as Brodie's I'm <v Speaker 3>always gonna go with Lance Guest over Dennisquaid. I definitely <v Speaker 3>love the idea that a lot of this movie is <v Speaker 3>about personal relationships. I totally buy the whole thing between <v Speaker 3>Ellen and Michael. It feels real. And if you took <v Speaker 3>if you took the whole shark attack out of this <v Speaker 3>and made this a drama, I'd watch another another hour <v Speaker 3>of just them dealing with the loss of a relative <v Speaker 3>because they both sell it so well. Another thing I <v Speaker 3>really like about this and we we kind of we've <v Speaker 3>kind of talked a little bit about this on our <v Speaker 3>on our podcast, but movies like this from the eighties <v Speaker 3>and the seventies and even like the early nineties, I <v Speaker 3>was a lot younger, so there's there's things I didn't <v Speaker 3>pay attention to that as an adult, I do pay <v Speaker 3>attention to this movie and the way it deals with <v Speaker 3>PTSD and and trauma for people. I think has done <v Speaker 3>really well, especially with Lance Guest. I mean, he is <v Speaker 3>absolutely just destroyed when the shark comes to town because <v Speaker 3>he's holding it pretty he's holding himself together pretty well <v Speaker 3>for his mom and the family. But when the shark <v Speaker 3>shows up, you know, the sleepless nights, the drenched sweat, <v Speaker 3>I mean, he's waking up like Ellen Ripley in Aliens, <v Speaker 3>I mean, he is not okay with with what's going on. <v Speaker 3>And I love the fact that even after his first <v Speaker 3>encounter with the shark, he wants to jump right back <v Speaker 3>in the water just to deal with his demons. So <v Speaker 3>a lot of good stuff going on here. I love <v Speaker 3>the production values. Shooting in the Bahamas, shooting at Martha's vineyard. <v Speaker 3>They have no issues just destroying a small I don't <v Speaker 3>think it's like a cessna. When HOGI just lands it, <v Speaker 3>that was a great scene. <v Speaker 2>I was like, are they really going to land that thing? <v Speaker 2>And by golly, they did it. I thought that he's <v Speaker 2>a full on cowboy. <v Speaker 3>It's like, hey, we got to get to her, all right, <v Speaker 3>we're taking it down. <v Speaker 2>I'm not real sure why you wouldn't cut the props <v Speaker 2>and like glide In. Maybe glide In it's supposed to <v Speaker 2>destroying the propellers when you come in. But you know whatever, <v Speaker 2>it was real. <v Speaker 3>It's a ballsy move too, because yeah, it's a ballsy <v Speaker 3>move because you've got to crash the plane near the boat, <v Speaker 3>and then you've got like a thirty yard swim to <v Speaker 3>the boat and oh, by the way, there's a great <v Speaker 3>white shark right there. Love when he's doing the hide <v Speaker 3>and seek in the sunken ship with the shark. I <v Speaker 3>feel the claustrophobia in that scene, and I think to myself, <v Speaker 3>you know, wow, what would you even do? How do <v Speaker 3>you how far can you go? And again the effects <v Speaker 3>and I know this movie gets the Razzie for for <v Speaker 3>worst effects, which I don't know how that happens when <v Speaker 3>Superman four is also out there, but when Jaws bust <v Speaker 3>through like and when it can't, when it can't reach him, <v Speaker 3>and it busts through and the only thing saving him <v Speaker 3>is that rusty ladder. Love that scene. That's a that's <v Speaker 3>a clutch, the arm of the couch moment, you know <v Speaker 3>where you're just like, get out of there, find a <v Speaker 3>way out. So I went a little too far, but hey, <v Speaker 3>I'm this is what I love about the movie. <v Speaker 2>So just talking about that scene, I mentioned in our <v Speaker 2>last episode that Superman had some parts that could have <v Speaker 2>been great, and we ended up seeing him great and <v Speaker 2>mega mind And as far as that particular scene goes, <v Speaker 2>where you got him, where you got Bruce chasing the <v Speaker 2>guy through the sunken ship, they took it up a <v Speaker 2>notch when they did finding Nemo. <v Speaker 4>They did. <v Speaker 5>Yeah, yeah, they did that's right. <v Speaker 3>Scope. <v Speaker 2>Hey, well look this works spelled just like the escape is. <v Speaker 3>All friends not food. <v Speaker 4>Hey, one more thing that's positive in the in the <v Speaker 4>positive column for jas Revenge, No Cindy and Sandy, the <v Speaker 4>ridiculous dolphins from just three. <v Speaker 3>So yeah, thank you. <v Speaker 5>I will agree, did Jane? There's all three? The Cindy <v Speaker 5>and Sandy thing does hurt, And yes, I will agree <v Speaker 5>with you that Lance Guest's performance is brody because apparently <v Speaker 5>Dennis Quaid was so coked up you could see it. <v Speaker 5>He is, he overacts so much, him and Best Armstrong <v Speaker 5>and Lewis Cassa Junior. But I don't understand how I <v Speaker 5>won the Razzie for Worse Effects because I'm trying to <v Speaker 5>figure out when there was a bad effect, because Jeff, <v Speaker 5>you were right that that scene where the latter stucks. <v Speaker 3>We're gonna talk about those. <v Speaker 5>Trying to remember like some of the bad special effects, <v Speaker 5>but there are some good special effects that at least <v Speaker 5>counter the bad ones. <v Speaker 3>Okay, Okay, and I'll be fair. <v Speaker 4>I know right, he's defend I like it. <v Speaker 3>Okay. <v Speaker 4>Before we get into the fun part of the podcast, <v Speaker 4>I got to bring it down for just a second. Okay, <v Speaker 4>the tragic story of Judith Barci. We've got to at <v Speaker 4>least touch on that. Okay, she's a girl and Jaws <v Speaker 4>the Revenge. Her father was a psychopath who kept her <v Speaker 4>mother and her constant fear, threatened to kill them, threatened <v Speaker 4>to kill them. When they went to the Bahamas to <v Speaker 4>shoot Jaws the Revenge, she said, if you don't come back, <v Speaker 4>I'm gonna hunt you down and kill you. Well a <v Speaker 4>year later, in nineteen eighty eight, he did that very thing. <v Speaker 4>He killed his wife, killed the little girl. Her name <v Speaker 4>is Judith, and then killed himself. <v Speaker 2>She had, I mean, she was a quick rising star. <v Speaker 2>She had been in quite a few things. This obviously <v Speaker 2>was a big movie that she was in. But if <v Speaker 2>you guys remember A Land Before Time, she was a <v Speaker 2>little duck billed dinosaur that would go yep, yep, yep, yep. <v Speaker 2>And that's what they actually put on her tombstone marker. <v Speaker 2>Is that quote yep yep yep? <v Speaker 4>Right is kucky yep? One is what it is? Yet <v Speaker 4>lap blood? <v Speaker 2>Yeah, she was. She was a little girl with some <v Speaker 2>acting chops she pulled. I mean, she took a part <v Speaker 2>that had a lot of potential to be super annoying <v Speaker 2>and she delivered it really well. It is a true tragedy. <v Speaker 2>I've heard that that house that people who have resided <v Speaker 2>in the house believe it to be haunted by the <v Speaker 2>her spirit. <v Speaker 3>Last guest was one of the pall bearers at the funeral. <v Speaker 3>No oh wow, all right, So enough of that. <v Speaker 4>Let's get into the stuff that does not work in <v Speaker 4>this movie. <v Speaker 2>Can we talk about Maverick for just a second? Top <v Speaker 2>Gun Maverick? <v Speaker 3>Sure? What was ways? <v Speaker 2>So we all have done our own podcast on Top <v Speaker 2>Gun Maverick. And when you guys saw that first scene <v Speaker 2>where it absolutely mimicked the first scene of the original <v Speaker 2>Top Gun, did everybody else do the same thing in <v Speaker 2>their head in their head that I did where you went? <v Speaker 4>Yeah, of course, so chills. <v Speaker 2>So what we got at the beginning of Jaws the <v Speaker 2>Revenge is we've got the shark's point of view swimming <v Speaker 2>through the water, and I'm like, okay, I could see it. <v Speaker 2>That's the right move to make very good you guys <v Speaker 2>would do it. WHOA what? Why is his head above <v Speaker 2>the water? Yep? What is happening? Apparently that was foreshadowing <v Speaker 2>because a majority of the movie when you see the shark, <v Speaker 2>he's above the water. <v Speaker 5>He is out of the water a lot. <v Speaker 2>Yeah, gosh, it was like get Nope, almost good and <v Speaker 2>then not good. <v Speaker 4>But here we go with the bad effects, right, so <v Speaker 4>we need to be reminded of the bad effects here. Yeah, <v Speaker 4>when Sean gets his arm eating off and you can <v Speaker 4>see his other. <v Speaker 2>So I knew a piano player was just one arm. <v Speaker 2>Took her two minutes to play the minute walls, let <v Speaker 2>me tell that to him other and just Son just <v Speaker 2>got his arm. <v Speaker 5>Son got his arm rapped. <v Speaker 2>Yeah, told that joke to her. H Again, I thought <v Speaker 2>the acting was good. You got Mitchell Anderson as the <v Speaker 2>young Sean or the I guess the old Sean Brody, right, <v Speaker 2>the kid who little over the top, who in the <v Speaker 2>first who in the first Jaws does the imitation game <v Speaker 2>with that? Right? That was that was what he was <v Speaker 2>supposed to do there. Mitchell Anderson is the guy playing it, <v Speaker 2>and I and I'm watching, I'm like, I know that guy? <v Speaker 2>How do I know that guy? Don't? Do you guys <v Speaker 2>know where you know him from? <v Speaker 3>I don't. I don't know. <v Speaker 2>He was the other like the pretty doctor in Doogie Hazard. <v Speaker 2>Oh okay, yeah, I again I thought it was a <v Speaker 2>good I thought everything was well directed and set up <v Speaker 2>wealth to have him out there and then you have <v Speaker 2>that absurd I can see your arm inside your shirt moment, <v Speaker 2>and then him just screaming, and of course the shark again. <v Speaker 2>They violate the cardinal rule of the good horror movies, <v Speaker 2>the rule that Jaws put in place by pure accident, <v Speaker 2>which is you don't show the shark. You don't show <v Speaker 2>the shark until you're like three quarters into the movie. <v Speaker 2>They showed it within the first five minutes and it <v Speaker 2>was terrible. It was not believable. It was an ugly shark. <v Speaker 2>And then you've got this weird look like he had <v Speaker 2>his arm caught in a paper shredder. <v Speaker 3>Yeah, and then. <v Speaker 2>Somehow he ends back up in the water. <v Speaker 3>Jeff, care to defend that one. I cannot defend that <v Speaker 3>that moment because listen, you are a Amityville deputy, and <v Speaker 3>I understand you're in shock. You just got your arm <v Speaker 3>bit off and it's it looks like a site gag <v Speaker 3>from a Pink Panther film. However, you have two choices. <v Speaker 3>You can crawl over to the CB and and and <v Speaker 3>scream for help, or you can hang yourself over the <v Speaker 3>side of the half chewed boat and scream for help <v Speaker 3>to the the choir that's singing about a mile away. <v Speaker 3>I hate that scene just because of the ignorance that <v Speaker 3>it that it has him showing. <v Speaker 2>Hey, it was really important for him to go get <v Speaker 2>that log off of that booy because it was gonna stop. <v Speaker 3>All of those fishes, all the fishermen who even saw <v Speaker 3>that in that pitch black moment. <v Speaker 2>Yeah, all right, So once she flies, Okay, so we've <v Speaker 2>got the funeral, right, yep, she got She's telling her son, <v Speaker 2>who's just about to get his doctorate in marine biology, <v Speaker 2>that she doesn't want him to work in the water anymore. <v Speaker 2>I actually appreciated that, as I can see, I can <v Speaker 2>see the irrational mom that that that's believable. Right. But <v Speaker 2>then Mike is talking to his wife as they walk <v Speaker 2>along the beach, and mid sentence, he takes off running <v Speaker 2>down the beach. What the heck? <v Speaker 3>What was that? D I wrote a note here that <v Speaker 3>and I'm reading it. It says, uh, Michael's run before <v Speaker 3>the funeral question mark. All I can say is we <v Speaker 3>all deal with grief in our own ways. Some of <v Speaker 3>us cry, some of us shout, some of us run <v Speaker 3>run the beach like Rocky Balboa or or kind of <v Speaker 3>McLoud and Highlander. <v Speaker 2>And then after telling her son that she doesn't want <v Speaker 2>him anywhere near the water anymore. The next scene, they're <v Speaker 2>on the ferry and ugly crying on the ferry. <v Speaker 3>Oh yeah, not a good cry for her. <v Speaker 4>Now, then, what I want to talk about. I think <v Speaker 4>we're kind of there is, you know, Hogy taking them <v Speaker 4>on the airplane and then dive bombing the rich residence <v Speaker 4>of the Bahamas and scaring. <v Speaker 3>The crap out of people who have. <v Speaker 4>PTSD as it is, right right, Yeah, hey, let's just <v Speaker 4>havething really fun. <v Speaker 2>Yeah, talk about my gambling problem. <v Speaker 5>Hey. <v Speaker 4>By the way, Hogy's profession clearly is drug smuggler. <v Speaker 3>Yes, with that, Yeah, I don't think he's smuggling drugs. <v Speaker 3>I think he's smuggling drug money because he does tell <v Speaker 3>Michael when Michael's like what do you what do you <v Speaker 3>do Hogy, He's like laundry. Yeah, So I see him <v Speaker 3>more like a Glen Fry smugglers lose on device. Nice, <v Speaker 3>that's that's you know, This is Glenn Fry's dad, is <v Speaker 3>what we're what we're saying, or his older brother. <v Speaker 4>If you will be cool for twenty hours and I'll <v Speaker 4>pay you twenty grand, yes, we'll cut there. <v Speaker 3>I love it. <v Speaker 5>I have a question about Jake. When did he see <v Speaker 5>the original Jaws, because he apparently knows the Jaws theme <v Speaker 5>when he's down to Michael Blue, Oh he must have <v Speaker 5>saw the first Jaws. No, no, he didn't. <v Speaker 3>I'm going to defend that one. Okay, so if you listen, <v Speaker 3>you know he's not going dud dud, He's going dun <v Speaker 3>blum blum. I can test that he's he's a Friday <v Speaker 3>thirteenth fan and he's just doing the opening. Uh you know, <v Speaker 3>bit Harry Manfredini's Friday thirteenth score dent d d d <v Speaker 3>d d dent du Yeah, oh my god, he knock <v Speaker 3>it off. Jake should know that. Jay, you know that <v Speaker 3>Michael's not a fan of Friday thirteenth. And I'm gonna <v Speaker 3>leave it at that. <v Speaker 5>Jake's kind of a kind of a jerk to really <v Speaker 5>make Michael do It's like, dude, your brother just got <v Speaker 5>eaten by a shark. Your family has a past history <v Speaker 5>with sharks. But I'm gonna make you google help me <v Speaker 5>look for one. Come on, I mean, come on, I <v Speaker 5>mean he has a small thing. Oh sorry about your brother, man. <v Speaker 3>You're right, he is a jerk. If if I'll just <v Speaker 3>I'll point this out because I loved your your Jamaican <v Speaker 3>accent there. But that's one of the moments where Mario <v Speaker 3>slips into regular angler. <v Speaker 5>Yeah that's right. <v Speaker 3>You know, that's one big Fischman and they goes, hey, <v Speaker 3>I'm sorry about your brother man. <v Speaker 5>Well, well, cracks me up about this shark is not <v Speaker 5>only does it have on revenge scenario type of situation <v Speaker 5>working on, but apparently has vocal cords too. It can scream, <v Speaker 5>you know, when her. <v Speaker 2>Even if sharks had vocal cords, they don't have lungs, yeah, cords. <v Speaker 4>And even if they did have vocal cords and lungs, <v Speaker 4>they wouldn't scream out a sound effect from a Tom <v Speaker 4>and Jerry cartoon? <v Speaker 2>What's the cartoon? <v Speaker 3>Tom and Jerry? <v Speaker 2>So Tom Jerry? What makes that noise? <v Speaker 4>In Tom and Jerry, Jerry has a little mouse friend <v Speaker 4>and Tom wax his butt with a fly swatter and <v Speaker 4>he gets red ass from it, and Jerry goes like berserk, <v Speaker 4>and he's like and he gives that big giant roar <v Speaker 4>and he goes he pulls Tom through a not hoole <v Speaker 4>and beats scrap out of it. <v Speaker 2>So you're telling me that the impossible shark roar is <v Speaker 2>not even a lion's roar. It's a cartoon mouse's rule. <v Speaker 4>It's Jerry Mouse's roar from a Tom and Jerry cartoon. <v Speaker 3>Did you guys know that? No? No, no, I didn't <v Speaker 3>know it. But it makes perfect sense. <v Speaker 4>Oh indeed, yes, absolutely wow. <v Speaker 2>We touched on it a bit ago, but I just did. <v Speaker 2>I just did the math here, so just so that <v Speaker 2>you know, top speed for a shark is about thirty <v Speaker 2>one miles per hour. So round Christmas time, if that <v Speaker 2>shark was in Martha's vineyard, if it left right after <v Speaker 2>it bit the arm off the other guy, before the <v Speaker 2>people even flew away, it would have gotten to the Bahamas, <v Speaker 2>oh sometime around Saint Patrick's Day. <v Speaker 5>Okay. And I know you guys talked about like the <v Speaker 5>personal stuff in there, but I think some of the stuff, <v Speaker 5>like Carla getting mad at Michael for like not taking <v Speaker 5>out the garbage and your whole thing with her sculpture <v Speaker 5>and stuff, I was just bored. I was just bored <v Speaker 5>with their whole kind of you know, I want to <v Speaker 5>make love to an angry welder, and just I thought <v Speaker 5>it was I thought it was filler that I didn't <v Speaker 5>care about Ellen and HOGI okay. <v Speaker 2>Right, because they're different types of movies. A character driven, <v Speaker 2>relationship driven movie is not what you want to go <v Speaker 2>see when you pick Jaws in the title, right, I <v Speaker 2>want to go see people chasing a shark and being <v Speaker 2>chased by a shark. That's it. <v Speaker 3>You gotta take the good with the bad. <v Speaker 4>She did sling shot the panties at him them. Yeah, <v Speaker 4>she uses sex a lot. She refers to it during Christmas, <v Speaker 4>she refers to it at New Year's Eve. She does <v Speaker 4>it in the bedroom when he's all, you know, like <v Speaker 4>in his head and stuff. <v Speaker 5>And then she does it at the welding thing. <v Speaker 3>Let me say it again, Lance guest with a beard. <v Speaker 5>That's all it takes. <v Speaker 2>Okay, you brought something up just about you know, he's <v Speaker 2>upset about he's seen the shark and he's having a dream. <v Speaker 2>Before that, we have Ellen Brody having the dream where <v Speaker 2>she's swimming. Right, They've arrived at in Nassau and she's <v Speaker 2>swimming and she gets tacked by a shark and all <v Speaker 2>of a sudden it's a dream. And can I just say, <v Speaker 2>don't do that. I think they thought it would work <v Speaker 2>because of aliens. Again that you know that that brief <v Speaker 2>dream sequence that Ripley had where the alien seems to <v Speaker 2>be coming out of her. That one was allowable, this one, <v Speaker 2>these two not. <v Speaker 4>And you know what we failed to talk about that, <v Speaker 4>really we should have been. Our starting point is the <v Speaker 4>script meeting where somebody stood up and said, how about <v Speaker 4>a shark targeting the Brody family for revenge and he <v Speaker 4>has like a psychic connection with them. Yeah, somebody should <v Speaker 4>have fired that. Dude right then said dude, who get <v Speaker 4>out of here? <v Speaker 2>Yeah, you're firing here. <v Speaker 5>But this is the this is the premise that puts <v Speaker 5>in Jeff's opinion, Jaw's four over Jaws three. <v Speaker 3>Look talking about things that that that don't work or <v Speaker 3>that they got wrong. Yeah, I've got Ellen's shark esp <v Speaker 3>written down. Here's the thing, though, if you if you <v Speaker 3>want to throw the blame at someone, I think you <v Speaker 3>have to throw it at sergeant. Because as d was <v Speaker 3>pointing out like the behind the scenes on this and <v Speaker 3>talking how we get this movie to begin with, he says, <v Speaker 3>I don't know if I could do this, And they <v Speaker 3>said no, no, no, we're gonna do something different to <v Speaker 3>see what you can do. You're gonna you're gonna produce <v Speaker 3>it you're gonna direct it, and he there's a quote <v Speaker 3>I can't remember where I saw, but here's a quote <v Speaker 3>where he talks about how he thought maybe bringing a <v Speaker 3>little bit of magic, which I think that's the wrong word, <v Speaker 3>but he said he uses the word magic, and he says, <v Speaker 3>let's put a little magic into this story and really <v Speaker 3>give the audience something they haven't seen before. So that's <v Speaker 3>where you get this whole supernatural The sharks after the family, <v Speaker 3>and you know Ellen, since when a Brody's in danger, <v Speaker 3>you know, she's she's at the Junkanoo festival with Hogi <v Speaker 3>and then Michael gets attacked and she stops like, oh <v Speaker 3>my god, wait, something's wrong, like right right, mother's instinct. <v Speaker 3>So I can't even fault Lorraine Gary for the role <v Speaker 3>that she had to play. I think she does a <v Speaker 3>great job with this, But that's not on her that <v Speaker 3>she has to have, like, you know, esp and the <v Speaker 3>shark has to have some kind of psychic connection with her. <v Speaker 3>That's that's on that's on the makers of the film. <v Speaker 4>So the novelization, the original script had a little bit <v Speaker 4>of voodoo curse into it, right, Oh wow. So they <v Speaker 4>ran into each other at that festival, in the Bahamas <v Speaker 4>and they actually, you know, they bump into what's his <v Speaker 4>name from Live and Let Die and he drops a <v Speaker 4>cur codo. <v Speaker 2>Yeah, yes, it's a vengeful witch doctor. That's the early <v Speaker 2>draft and the novelization. The shark is controlled by a <v Speaker 2>vengeful witch doctor. I don't know how it makes him <v Speaker 2>swim past her, but yeah, that's what it is. <v Speaker 5>Okay. <v Speaker 3>I can buy that a heck of a lot more <v Speaker 3>than I can SeaWorld's. <v Speaker 5>Really you guess by that more than just a coincidence <v Speaker 5>at a theme park. <v Speaker 2>Here's the god, here's the biggest problem. I mean, here's <v Speaker 2>the biggest problem here. How can the shark have revenge <v Speaker 2>if the shark in the past two to three movies <v Speaker 2>has been killed, that doesn't I mean, there's no that's <v Speaker 2>nothing left alive to have revenge. I told Jason I <v Speaker 2>was because he was like, bring that up. I'm like, well, <v Speaker 2>isn't it supposed to be like the mother of the <v Speaker 2>other sharks or something. He's like, no, that's not in there. <v Speaker 2>And I realized I made that up in my head <v Speaker 2>to try to give it some sort of rink, but <v Speaker 2>there is none. There is no explanation. She says. He <v Speaker 2>was trying to get Sean. He came down here for us. <v Speaker 2>That's psychotic, that is crazy. That doesn't make any sense <v Speaker 2>because the sharks are dead. They can't come get you. <v Speaker 3>They're dead. <v Speaker 5>I think the thing with this film and many, many, <v Speaker 5>many films of the eighties is you really only needed <v Speaker 5>a title in the movie for people to go see it. Right, <v Speaker 5>the Thirteenth Nightmare and Elm Street Superman, Jaws, you really <v Speaker 5>only needed that. You can kind of get ridiculous because <v Speaker 5>they knew their actual target audience were us at ten <v Speaker 5>twelve years old. Like you said, the Cannon Group, make <v Speaker 5>a poster, put the title on the thing, and that's <v Speaker 5>really all they needed. <v Speaker 3>I think I have an answer to the Shark. You <v Speaker 3>know how it keeps coming back? Flashback to the hit <v Speaker 3>your episode that Jason and I did. We talked about <v Speaker 3>this phenomenon called the Mandela effect, where you have a <v Speaker 3>false memory that, for reasons that you don't understand, is <v Speaker 3>just planted in your brain and you know it happened <v Speaker 3>for real. I seem to remember the whole idea from <v Speaker 3>the Peter Benchley's novel Jaws were at the end after <v Speaker 3>the shark explodes, you kind of fade down the depths <v Speaker 3>of the ocean, and that's where you see a bunch <v Speaker 3>of baby sharks, and that's where the idea is, like <v Speaker 3>they just killed the mother. Maybe I'm remembering that it's <v Speaker 3>a false memory, but I think that explains how you <v Speaker 3>get Jaws two and Jael's three, how the shark keeps <v Speaker 3>coming back. <v Speaker 5>I can definitely say a movie that actually surpassed the novel. <v Speaker 5>I did read the novel years ago, and it was <v Speaker 5>it was kind of depressing the original Jaws. Yeah, the <v Speaker 5>original Jaws novel is the characters are very unlikable. <v Speaker 4>Well Hooper sleeps with freaking Ellen. <v Speaker 5>Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was. It was just very likable <v Speaker 5>at all. <v Speaker 2>It was just like your Jeff said about Part three, <v Speaker 2>is that you wanted the shark to eat them. You're like, <v Speaker 2>people are horrible, You're rooting for the shark. Jumping back <v Speaker 2>into the bad of the movie, when when Jake is <v Speaker 2>there and he figures out that there's now a great <v Speaker 2>white shark in the Bahamas, which never happens his words, <v Speaker 2>never happens, and that they've got to study it. He <v Speaker 2>develops this thing that's going to track its heartbeat, right, <v Speaker 2>I mean, we've already got music that makes the heartbeat sound, <v Speaker 2>but okay, we'll put a little heartbeat tracker on there. <v Speaker 2>It kind of takes the place of the yellow floaters <v Speaker 2>that they had from Jaws one. Right, But I just want <v Speaker 2>to talk about the scene where they're going to implant <v Speaker 2>that thing into the side of the shark. They have <v Speaker 2>a gun like Shark one like Jaws one. Right, they're <v Speaker 2>just gonna they're gonna harpoon it. No, they lead him <v Speaker 2>out on a precarious rope. Yeah right, and he's got it. <v Speaker 2>He's going to hand spirit into the side of the shark. <v Speaker 2>No guns, no distance. We're gonna get up close and <v Speaker 2>personal and just ram it in there. But they've got <v Speaker 2>to lure the shark in, right, So how do they <v Speaker 2>lure the shark in? They dangle meet over the water, <v Speaker 2>not in the water, over the water, and it's only <v Speaker 2>once they see the shark already plowing through the water <v Speaker 2>towards them because it works. Why, I don't know, but <v Speaker 2>it works, and the shark's coming from it's at that <v Speaker 2>point that then they go ahead and decided to lower <v Speaker 2>the meat in and start humming along. And still even <v Speaker 2>though it's got the meat, it jumps up out of <v Speaker 2>the water to pose itself out just in time for <v Speaker 2>Jake to stab him in the side. Absurdity upon absurdity. <v Speaker 5>Yes, and when he did it, I just like, you <v Speaker 5>get that little needle through his skin. Yeah, here's the harpoon, <v Speaker 5>for God's sake. <v Speaker 4>Speaking of absurdities, What in the bleep is Ellen's plan <v Speaker 4>when she hijacks the boat to go take on the <v Speaker 4>fish out in the middle of the ocean. <v Speaker 3>I mean, what's the plan. <v Speaker 5>I think to kill her. I think to kill herself. <v Speaker 2>To appease She's the sacrificial sacrificial lamb? <v Speaker 3>Is that? Is that the idea? <v Speaker 2>She didn't explain it. He even says, what were you thinking? <v Speaker 2>And she's like, yeah, yeah, this is crazy. <v Speaker 3>Why did you do this? She's like, it was the <v Speaker 3>only thing I could do. <v Speaker 2>The exact opposite of Ellen, right, I mean, if you're <v Speaker 2>gonna pick a movie that you're gonna cheat off of <v Speaker 2>for the next summer season, do it right. Don't make <v Speaker 2>her a crazy lady who goes out with no plan <v Speaker 2>whatsoever by herself. Yeah. <v Speaker 4>Yeah, well, and then what's Hogy's plan. I'm going to <v Speaker 4>crash the plane into the water. Yeah, well, all together, <v Speaker 4>and it was ballsy, but it was also stupid. They'll <v Speaker 4>all be together, the big boat sink and the plane sink. <v Speaker 2>So there was actually a decent jump scare in this movie. <v Speaker 2>There were a whole lot there enough, there was one <v Speaker 2>decent jump scaleel. It was the eel. The eel was <v Speaker 2>the scariest part in the movie because they did it right. <v Speaker 2>It was you didn't see it coming and then all <v Speaker 2>of a sudden, there it was. It wasn't a we're <v Speaker 2>gonna let you lead in and see the shark as <v Speaker 2>it swims along. I mean, shark was swimming like a <v Speaker 2>whale shark. It was like slow motion and we watched <v Speaker 2>it all in bright sunlight. That's not scary. That's you <v Speaker 2>showing me all of the imperfections of your mechanical shark. <v Speaker 2>So I think the second scariest scene is the banana boat. <v Speaker 3>Yeah, I agree, Yes, I agree. <v Speaker 4>Fia is in peril at that moment, right. <v Speaker 2>And and the and the shark coming up and getting her. <v Speaker 2>I think that's the best shark attack scene in the movie. <v Speaker 5>I've ridden a banana boat once, and that movie was <v Speaker 5>in my mind the entire time. <v Speaker 3>I never have and I never will because of this movie. <v Speaker 6>It was close to the shore though, so it was <v Speaker 6>I was okay, hey, by the way, I sent you <v Speaker 6>a picture last night. Ellen gets mad at thea her <v Speaker 6>granddaughter for swinging over the water. Yes, get away from <v Speaker 6>there and cut that out. She's still dealing with her, <v Speaker 6>you know, the Lost person. I took a picture of <v Speaker 6>the video from that movie. <v Speaker 3>That water is what eight inches deep. <v Speaker 2>It's dangerous because you're gonna break your neck, You're. <v Speaker 3>Gonna hit the rocks. <v Speaker 5>S Yeah, there's a couple scenes at the end where <v Speaker 5>I don't know if the water looks like they're in <v Speaker 5>very shallow water. Yeah, Like I'm like, wait a minute, <v Speaker 5>the water's kind of green right there that you can <v Speaker 5>really see the algae. It was like, I think they're <v Speaker 5>kind of close to the shore. Hey, back on the <v Speaker 5>back on the defensive, low tide. Man draw drawn shot <v Speaker 5>of water, going to draw him in gonna I'm reaching. <v Speaker 3>At this point, He's like this, this is not going <v Speaker 3>to hold up in court Johnson. <v Speaker 2>So so we have the the esp premonition. She sees <v Speaker 2>banana boat happening, and her solution is to steal Neptune's Folly. <v Speaker 2>That's the name of the ship that's right. Steel Neptune's <v Speaker 2>folly go out by herself to try to track down <v Speaker 2>the shark with no other plan than that. <v Speaker 3>No tools, no way of no no nothing. <v Speaker 2>So then he shows back up, has to admit that <v Speaker 2>he knew about the shark the whole time. The the <v Speaker 2>big plan that he gets when he realizes his large <v Speaker 2>boat has been taken is he's going to take what <v Speaker 2>I can only describe as a flat bottom outboard motor. <v Speaker 2>You're never going to get there, and if you do, <v Speaker 2>the shark is going to eat it in one bite. <v Speaker 3>You got a better idea, Yeah, let's fly the I'm <v Speaker 3>going to try and be again to defend some behaviors here. <v Speaker 3>But I'll ask you guys, because I'm I'm looking at <v Speaker 3>three fathers here. He comes home, thea's in shock, you know, <v Speaker 3>shark attack, and he's like, ah, we should have known, <v Speaker 3>and the astor reveal, yeah, we knew about this. You <v Speaker 3>guys are dad's Is this one of those situations where <v Speaker 3>you're not lying to your wife, You're just trying to <v Speaker 3>keep the family from freaking out? Or do you do <v Speaker 3>you disclose this immediately? Like, hey, I got attacked by <v Speaker 3>a shark today at work, and you should know, like, <v Speaker 3>what's the what's the call there? <v Speaker 7>Oh? <v Speaker 2>I thought you meant do you lie at that point? <v Speaker 2>Whenever that whenever your daughter's been attacked by the shark <v Speaker 2>and your wife is there consoling her. If I had lied, <v Speaker 2>if I had not mentioned the shark before, I would <v Speaker 2>have been like, there was a shark? What? <v Speaker 3>Okay? <v Speaker 5>I had no idea. He's not He's not lying this <v Speaker 5>type of thing. I wonder if Jake has any stuff on. <v Speaker 3>The boat, we'll go find out, because he doesn't reveal <v Speaker 3>it immediately to his mom when they when they make <v Speaker 3>the daring plane crash and swim to the Neptune's folly, <v Speaker 3>He's more like, what are you doing? What were you thinking? <v Speaker 3>It's ludicrous? <v Speaker 5>And then you have that overacting by Karla. <v Speaker 3>I would say this, you know, as far as her <v Speaker 3>motivation for taking the boat out there, at this point <v Speaker 3>in the movie, she has got into her head that <v Speaker 3>this shark has killed her husband, her son, and it <v Speaker 3>just attacked her granddaughter. <v Speaker 2>He wonder of a heart attack. <v Speaker 3>He died from fear of fear. So I'm wondering if <v Speaker 3>her motivation stems from maybe she thinks if I just <v Speaker 3>give the shark. What at once, if I just sacrifice myself, <v Speaker 3>it'll leave my family alone. Maybe is that her motivation? <v Speaker 4>Possibly if she would have said that, like I'm good <v Speaker 4>with it, just make that pronouncement, you know, yeah, this <v Speaker 4>is where I'm going, this is what I'm doing instead <v Speaker 4>of like just take the boat and just ride out there. <v Speaker 3>Yeah, because she has that not as good as Ripley <v Speaker 3>line where she's like get me. <v Speaker 2>That would have that would have put her in kind <v Speaker 2>of that tougher category, like Ellen Ripley going out to <v Speaker 2>be the arcrificial lamb. I told you, it's just real <v Speaker 2>hard to buy that when she's got shoulder. <v Speaker 5>Pads and that hair cut. <v Speaker 2>Yeah, I mean she takes off her I thought the jacket. <v Speaker 2>I was like, oh man, that's jacket's got some big <v Speaker 2>shoulder play. No, it's her shirt. <v Speaker 3>That's the shirt. <v Speaker 5>She took that and she takes off it. <v Speaker 2>Was like where those shoulder pads are sewn in. <v Speaker 3>She's right at home with Hawking Animal from the Road Warriors, <v Speaker 3>like you know, she's just missing the spikes. Hey, one <v Speaker 3>quick adjustment to that scene. <v Speaker 4>If she would have grabbed like a massive harpoon gun <v Speaker 4>or like stole it from Jake's warehouse or something like that. <v Speaker 3>A giant Wiley coyote, T and T box. <v Speaker 4>I mean, just something showing she had a plan would <v Speaker 4>have been better than what we got in that scene. <v Speaker 5>I almost feel I'll have to look at the cover <v Speaker 5>art again. I feel that there was a cover art <v Speaker 5>had a harpoon. <v Speaker 4>She's got it, like a yeah she. <v Speaker 3>Does right spear thing. <v Speaker 5>Okay, okay, I thought so, like you said, one of <v Speaker 5>those things we remember something that maybe didn't exist. But yeah, <v Speaker 5>I could have sworn she's got Yes, I knew it. <v Speaker 5>I knew it. <v Speaker 3>Where's that scene? <v Speaker 2>Yeah, that would have been a movie worth watching. <v Speaker 4>That shark is less out of the water than what happens. <v Speaker 2>In the movie. Yeah, oh my gosh, I didn't even <v Speaker 2>realize that the shark it's the same image, listeners, Dear, listeners, <v Speaker 2>it is the same nose up image that is in <v Speaker 2>the original Jaws poster, except that the shark is out <v Speaker 2>of the water. Because in this movie the shark is <v Speaker 2>out of the water. <v Speaker 5>Maybe that should have been the tagline instead of it's personal. <v Speaker 5>It should have been Jaws of revenge. Fish out of <v Speaker 5>the water. <v Speaker 3>It Jaws the revenge. <v Speaker 4>It's airborne yes, and air jaws. <v Speaker 2>What's interesting if you guys have seen Planet Earth, like <v Speaker 2>my this was my son and I favorite part of <v Speaker 2>Planet Earth is where they have the great white sharks <v Speaker 2>jump out of the water and they will they total <v Speaker 2>like they toe a little seal behind them, and those <v Speaker 2>guys will blast full body out of the water and <v Speaker 2>it looks incredible. It's not the shark being out of <v Speaker 2>the water that's the weirdness about it. It's this random <v Speaker 2>device that Jake shoves down the shark's throat just before <v Speaker 2>he gets eaten, but not eating himself. <v Speaker 5>Depending on which version you see. <v Speaker 2>Yeah, something that nobody's ever heard of, but that we <v Speaker 2>know will cause the shark to go crazy and jump <v Speaker 2>out of the water. <v Speaker 3>Yeah. And those are I mean those are more or less. <v Speaker 3>Those are like d battery flashlights. <v Speaker 5>He my girdn't crap a man. <v Speaker 4>He yanked it out of his nineteen eighties boot make. <v Speaker 5>Says it's gonna work. Then it's gonna work. <v Speaker 2>So as there as the movie is climaxing as they <v Speaker 2>are headed nose first towards the shark and the shark <v Speaker 2>is roaring and Hogy is like turn about and she's <v Speaker 2>slapping his hand away from her steering wheel as she <v Speaker 2>steers towards it with Again, we have no idea what plan. <v Speaker 4>By the way, the continuity in the scene is absolutely amazing. <v Speaker 2>She's had memories of things that she wasn't there for. <v Speaker 2>She's had a memory of Roy Scheider shooting the shark. <v Speaker 2>She wasn't there. She's having memories of Sean getting eaten <v Speaker 2>by the shark. She wasn't there. She's having memories of <v Speaker 2>the banana boat scene. I guess she was there, but <v Speaker 2>she wasn't from the shark's perspective. <v Speaker 4>It's the Mandela effects again. <v Speaker 2>Oh and then when you have the attack. When you <v Speaker 2>have the attack and all of this happening, another terrible <v Speaker 2>direction is you get a reaction shot from all three <v Speaker 2>other people on the boat. It's like Mike's reaction, duh <v Speaker 2>Ellen's reaction, duh Hogy's reaction, dun duh. Then we're back <v Speaker 2>to Jake and he's still getting to eat in. And <v Speaker 2>then it's Mike's reaction, dun duh Ellen's reaction, dun du <v Speaker 2>Hogy's reaction. I'm like, guys, do one at a time. <v Speaker 2>Let's speed this up. It's called a jump cut. Let's <v Speaker 2>make it, move it along. This is supposed to be action, <v Speaker 2>not let's see what everybody thinks. Yeah, all right, a <v Speaker 2>little a little excited there, apologist came down down. It's <v Speaker 2>a little frustrated. <v Speaker 3>It's it's a pacing issue. It does kind of They're like, <v Speaker 3>come on. <v Speaker 4>It should have sped it up, just like they did <v Speaker 4>the refrigerator scene. <v Speaker 5>Well, if if I'm ever to do some kind of <v Speaker 5>art project where you know, the city or you know <v Speaker 5>is going to dedicate this and use this as a <v Speaker 5>landmark on a thing, my daughter is not gonna go <v Speaker 5>banana boating while I'm getting my thing done. I'm like, no, <v Speaker 5>you're gonna wait until I'm done with this thing. Your <v Speaker 5>father didn't show up, Jake didn't show up. You're gonna <v Speaker 5>stay here. You watch me accept this award for this. <v Speaker 3>It's good, you know. <v Speaker 5>I'm just like, can I go banana button? <v Speaker 4>No? <v Speaker 5>We're in the middle of something right this. Yeah, can <v Speaker 5>we even know we're at the beach. This isn't a <v Speaker 5>day at the beach. Everyone's dressed up and everything. <v Speaker 2>Oh we go banana bu. <v Speaker 4>Wherever? <v Speaker 3>Can Can I just say something about, uh, this terrific <v Speaker 3>art piece? Tourist on the loose, Yes, because that's what <v Speaker 3>it's called. This is this is something I don't like, <v Speaker 3>and I get it. Sometimes you have to do a <v Speaker 3>little bit exposition for the audience, but but don't treat <v Speaker 3>us like we're idiots. So it is clearly a sculpture <v Speaker 3>of a great white shark. Clearly it is not tourists <v Speaker 3>on the loose. The last time I was insulted like <v Speaker 3>this was was Bob Kilmer looking at clearly at a <v Speaker 3>portrait of a bat and going, what do you have? <v Speaker 3>What's your thing with bats? And Chase Murden and going, uh, <v Speaker 3>that's a rorshack. What question is what do you have <v Speaker 3>with bats? It's that's that's a bat. Okay, this is <v Speaker 3>a shark. Don't call it tourists on loose. It's clearly <v Speaker 3>a shark. <v Speaker 5>I think it looks like female genitalia. It just looks <v Speaker 5>like anatomy. I'm just like, I was like, she just <v Speaker 5>I was like, I think this is what are you <v Speaker 5>talking about? That sculpture is just hideous. <v Speaker 2>People work is strongly vaginal. <v Speaker 5>Yeah, it was just like, what is this. <v Speaker 2>To say that some people vagina? <v Speaker 3>I didn't. I'll watch it listen. I love this, but <v Speaker 3>like I said, I love the movie. I'll watch it <v Speaker 3>plenty more times. I'll be looking for that take on <v Speaker 3>the sculpture next time I watch it. <v Speaker 5>Now, not that I would ever buy this film, but <v Speaker 5>if I were to buy this film, which version am <v Speaker 5>I going to get? <v Speaker 2>Then that's the thing you will get, the exploding shark version. <v Speaker 2>You have to do YouTube the theatrical version to get it. <v Speaker 2>They they believed that they could fix all of their <v Speaker 2>problems on the DVD by changing the ending having the <v Speaker 2>shark explode, which, of course they didn't actually have the <v Speaker 2>shark explode. They just cut in scenes from the original <v Speaker 2>Jaws with the exploding shark and having that tank down <v Speaker 2>to the bottom. And they thought they that they could <v Speaker 2>fix the other problem by bringing Jake back, Yeah, unharmed. <v Speaker 3>The mega terrific happy ending. Yeah yeah, that's right. Yeah, <v Speaker 3>And I was happy to see Jake Beck. <v Speaker 4>But I'm still like, huh, that is ludicrous, man, he <v Speaker 4>was in the job. <v Speaker 2>It's not him. <v Speaker 3>It was very obviously not him. It was just double Well. <v Speaker 3>If you watch it, here's I don't even have to say. <v Speaker 2>If you watch carefully, if you are myopic, you can <v Speaker 2>tell that that is not people's in that shark's mouth. <v Speaker 3>That is very true. Look, you know, if you want <v Speaker 3>to recut it, that's fine, but do us the service <v Speaker 3>at least of seeing him fall in the water and <v Speaker 3>not watching him go for the thrill ride underwater where <v Speaker 3>blood is hemorrhaging from the fox's mouth, him in it, <v Speaker 3>his lifeless body, right, and Jaws, you know, Quin cranks <v Speaker 3>up the portable shower of the monkey cage, you know, <v Speaker 3>anti shark cage, and we see it's been torn apart. <v Speaker 3>If it's your first time, you assume Hooper is dead, <v Speaker 3>so it's refreshing exactly exactly. Let Jake go underwater, and <v Speaker 3>it's like, we just let's just assume. Okay, Yeah, that's fine. <v Speaker 3>I would have been okay with that. But there's no <v Speaker 3>you know, Jason, you sent that photo earlier this week. <v Speaker 3>There's no way he's surviving that. And even if even <v Speaker 3>if he's conscious in the water, he's dying within minutes <v Speaker 3>once they pull him all because he's bleeding out. He <v Speaker 3>just is. <v Speaker 2>I mean, if they're going to re edit it anyway, <v Speaker 2>just remove the scenes where it's so obvious that he <v Speaker 2>would be dead, right, that's all you gotta do. But <v Speaker 2>what happened was they put him coming back in and <v Speaker 2>somebody I know that, somebody said, look, there's no way <v Speaker 2>he could survive this. We got to take these scenes out. <v Speaker 2>And somebody with higher power said no, no, no, no, those <v Speaker 2>are great effects. We don't want to lose that. <v Speaker 3>Yeah. <v Speaker 4>Yeah, genies only slightly less ridiculous than that would be <v Speaker 4>if Sean popped up and be. <v Speaker 6>Like, hey, guys, have no arm. <v Speaker 3>Arm it's feeling much better. <v Speaker 2>Okay. So that brings us brings me to the question <v Speaker 2>that I posed on our last episode, which is, do <v Speaker 2>you think that you could re edit this movie and <v Speaker 2>make it a good movie or someone with you know <v Speaker 2>editing shops good? <v Speaker 5>Absolutely, yes, yes, because we know there is footage that <v Speaker 5>we could use. <v Speaker 4>Yes, well, the parts in between the effects shots are good. Yeah, <v Speaker 4>unlike Superman four. <v Speaker 2>Right, but you have to but you still have story <v Speaker 2>fixing that you have to do. It is no matter <v Speaker 2>no matter what you do, you cannot say that the <v Speaker 2>shark swims from Martha's vineyard, Emity Island, whatever, down to <v Speaker 2>the Bahamas. That's not reasonable, that's not possible. So you <v Speaker 2>have to you have to make some adjustment says to <v Speaker 2>where things occur. So that's a pretty easy fix. Mike <v Speaker 2>is down in the Bahamas right right when he gets <v Speaker 2>attacked by a shark, and it's not the same shark. <v Speaker 2>Let's just say that. Let's just change it from a <v Speaker 2>great white into I don't know, a bull shark, the <v Speaker 2>most dangerous shark as far as human attacks go. Anyway, <v Speaker 2>change the shark. What's wrong with that? Nothing? <v Speaker 3>Nothing wrong with that. <v Speaker 2>But I told Jason, I thought that this story, if <v Speaker 2>you took the shark parts out, which are the absolute <v Speaker 2>worst parts, if you took it out, it could be <v Speaker 2>very interesting as a is this woman crazy or is <v Speaker 2>she right? I think that you could have had a <v Speaker 2>great storyline where she thinks that the shark has followed <v Speaker 2>them and they're like trying to They're like, that's not reasonable. <v Speaker 2>It would take two months for the shark to swim here. <v Speaker 2>Sharks don't take things personally and do all of that. <v Speaker 2>But then also have the storyline of, well, but there <v Speaker 2>is actually a shark out there that's costing it. It <v Speaker 2>just it's not the same. <v Speaker 5>It's not the same one. <v Speaker 4>Hey, before we do our final judgment, I have to <v Speaker 4>ask you, yes something, how many of you guys played <v Speaker 4>the Jaws game? <v Speaker 3>This was one of my favorite games on the Nintendo <v Speaker 3>Entertainment System. It took me several months to beat it <v Speaker 3>because if you have played it, then you know you're, <v Speaker 3>you know, moving the boat around. Jaws pops up. It <v Speaker 3>immediately drops you into the ocean and you got to <v Speaker 3>fight crabs and you know other fish, but you keep <v Speaker 3>wounding Jaws with your harpoon gun and then once Jaws <v Speaker 3>is hurt enough, then you have to try and stab <v Speaker 3>it with the boat like like Ellen does. And it's <v Speaker 3>all a matter of perfect timing. It's like it's like <v Speaker 3>beating Tyson and Mike Tyson's punch out. It all comes <v Speaker 3>down to his split second timing. It took me three <v Speaker 3>months to beat that game. But the day I stabbed <v Speaker 3>the shark and it got it, I it was. It <v Speaker 3>was a great day in the Johnson Household. <v Speaker 4>Game Final judgment. We are down now to our final judgment. <v Speaker 7>Hey Dan, Jason John Reid from the thirty something movie <v Speaker 7>podcast and podcast Full of Kryptonite, which I joyfully host <v Speaker 7>with you guys. Super excited that you asked me to <v Speaker 7>pop in for a surely showcase for your showdown between <v Speaker 7>Jaws The Revenge and Superman four so pitting these two <v Speaker 7>movies against each other is really like taking a couple <v Speaker 7>of rock and sock them robots that are both half broken. <v Speaker 7>The springs are not really working so well anymore, the <v Speaker 7>punches don't seem to land, and we're going to make <v Speaker 7>them duke it out until one of them dies. So <v Speaker 7>I'm looking first at Jaws the Revenge, which admittedly I <v Speaker 7>have not seen quite as much as Superman Four. Being <v Speaker 7>a huge Superman fan, I have watched Superman four an <v Speaker 7>outrageous number of times. But Jaws the Revenge, how far <v Speaker 7>the Mighty had fallen. When I think of Jaws the Revenge, <v Speaker 7>I think of a few different things. I think of <v Speaker 7>some kind of weird mental telepathy that you can have <v Speaker 7>with sharks to know when they are about to strike <v Speaker 7>a member of your family. I think of the fact <v Speaker 7>that we have a shark explode when no explosive element <v Speaker 7>has really been introduced. How we have Michael Kine. There's <v Speaker 7>another thing. You're pitting Michael Caine against Christopher Reeve, which <v Speaker 7>not since the likes of Death Trap or Noises Off, <v Speaker 7>have we have such a Michael Kane Christopher Reeve one <v Speaker 7>two punch here Unfortunately not in the same movie this <v Speaker 7>time around. When I think of Jaws the Revenge, I <v Speaker 7>think of the idea of a shark getting revenge on <v Speaker 7>the family of the person that killed it and the <v Speaker 7>rest of its family, and I don't know where to <v Speaker 7>go with that. It makes me think of what a <v Speaker 7>wise man once said, ah Dan Jason, my old friends, <v Speaker 7>the great White proverb that tells us revenge is a <v Speaker 7>dish that is best served cold. It is very cold <v Speaker 7>in the ocean, and I am very cold on Jaws <v Speaker 7>the Revenge. So Superman four has a very special place <v Speaker 7>in my heart. <v Speaker 1>Now. <v Speaker 7>It's probably the part of my heart that has the <v Speaker 7>most cholesterol built up in it. But Superman four, I <v Speaker 7>remember loving it as a kid. As I have grown <v Speaker 7>up and then watched it again, I recognize it for <v Speaker 7>the dumpster fire that it is. And it's kind of <v Speaker 7>funny to go back and watch it now and see <v Speaker 7>when the Cannon Film Group got the rights to this, <v Speaker 7>took it over and just did not provide Christopher Reeve, <v Speaker 7>I think, is quoted in some of his own biographies <v Speaker 7>as saying that the budget was yanked out from underneath them, <v Speaker 7>and they didn't have the money to be able to <v Speaker 7>do what they needed to do, which to me is <v Speaker 7>a shame because this was kind of a passion project <v Speaker 7>of his, like he wanted to talk about the idea <v Speaker 7>of a nuclear disarmament, and it really comes across as <v Speaker 7>an unfinished movie, and it probably actually was. It kind <v Speaker 7>of seems to negate the whole Superman lois amnesia kiss, <v Speaker 7>which he uses here just for kicks, just to have <v Speaker 7>somebody to talk to for a minute. And then there's <v Speaker 7>kind of a scene where she's like, now I remember everything. <v Speaker 7>So does the kiss not work? I don't know, I'm <v Speaker 7>not sure. We also learned that you can re constitute <v Speaker 7>the Great Wall of China with a point of your finger, <v Speaker 7>superpower that has never been displayed before or since Nuclear Man. <v Speaker 7>I love Nuclear Man as a villain. So I mean, <v Speaker 7>is it a stupid movie, Yes, it's a stupid movie. <v Speaker 7>Is it a poorly put together movie? Yes, it's a <v Speaker 7>poorly put together movie. But knowing that this is something <v Speaker 7>that Christopher Reeve was passionate about, knowing that it had <v Speaker 7>so much potential, I am between the two. I'm gonna <v Speaker 7>have to go with Superman four because it is of <v Speaker 7>the two, it is it is the most craptastic, and <v Speaker 7>that's gonna be my final thought. <v Speaker 5>Again. <v Speaker 7>Thank you guys so much for letting me jump in <v Speaker 7>here on the Shirley show Case. Love your show, Love <v Speaker 7>what you guys are doing. Can't wait to hear what <v Speaker 7>is coming up next, and we'll be talking to you soon. <v Speaker 4>Brad, why don't you go first give us your final <v Speaker 4>judgment between Superman four The Quest for Piece Jaws the <v Speaker 4>Revenge two stinkers from nineteen eighty seven, Ready said dot. <v Speaker 5>I can't believe I'm gonna do this because I'm such <v Speaker 5>a big Superman fan. Jaws four is more watchable. Both <v Speaker 5>of them are ridiculous, but I found myself cringing at <v Speaker 5>parts of Superman four from It's a cringing at parts <v Speaker 5>of Jaws as well. But it was also, I think <v Speaker 5>right now, like as it was watching Shark Week, I <v Speaker 5>watched Yawn. You know it's it's summer. Maybe the atmosphere <v Speaker 5>of the Bahamas made it a little bit more fun. <v Speaker 5>It felt summer movie esque. So Jaws The Revenge awesome, <v Speaker 5>even though I preferred Jaws three. <v Speaker 3>All right, Jeff, you're up, Bud, all right? So final judgment, <v Speaker 3>Superman The Quest for Peace versus Jaws Revenge. To all <v Speaker 3>you thinking Superman is the better film and my worst <v Speaker 3>HOGI impression, impression, give it a kick in the offs, <v Speaker 3>Jawls with a Revenge is by far the better film. <v Speaker 3>When you rack these two up, wow, it just is. <v Speaker 3>It's not even close. And I am a I've been <v Speaker 3>a I've been a diehard Superman fan since my mom <v Speaker 3>introduced me to the character when I was six years old. <v Speaker 3>And I love Superman. I've loved all the iterations good <v Speaker 3>and bad, but I cannot defend the Quest for Peace, <v Speaker 3>especially when it's going up against the Revenge. <v Speaker 2>Y're up, Okay, yes, this is the easy one for me, <v Speaker 2>and it's the same as you guys. Jaws The Revenge <v Speaker 2>is a much more watchable movie than Superman Question Piece. <v Speaker 2>And I think about the fact that we are all <v Speaker 2>diehard Superman fans, and I think that is probably why <v Speaker 2>Superman Question Piece is so offensive to us. It's like, <v Speaker 2>if you hear someone singing extremely off key but singing <v Speaker 2>your favorite song, You're like, you're ruining it. You are <v Speaker 2>ruining it, and then that's the last time you get <v Speaker 2>to hear that song. Yeah, well said, that makes it murderous. <v Speaker 2>But even if I didn't have that, even if I <v Speaker 2>didn't have that strong connection, I mean, the fact is <v Speaker 2>is that Jaws the Revenge has some very watchable moments, <v Speaker 2>very well acted, directed and put together moments. It's just <v Speaker 2>overall very very poor. Yeah, yeah, so definitely picking Jaws <v Speaker 2>Revenge as the better of those two. <v Speaker 3>Okay, so I guess it's down to me. <v Speaker 4>Yep, yep, I'm going to make this a four some <v Speaker 4>across the board. Jaws the Revenge is clearly the better <v Speaker 4>of these two movies. It's way more fun, it's way <v Speaker 4>better to look at. Superman four is like your parents <v Speaker 4>getting divorced, Like everyone has hard feelings, everyone's sad, it <v Speaker 4>didn't work out, and it just it's just a big <v Speaker 4>dumpster far Jaws the Revenge is like having a fling <v Speaker 4>on vacation. It didn't really work out, but you're you're <v Speaker 4>having fun. You're on vacation. You know, you're you're having <v Speaker 4>a good time or whatever, and it just didn't quite <v Speaker 4>work out. And that's the way I feel about these <v Speaker 4>two movies. <v Speaker 3>I love it. <v Speaker 2>I will let you know that you can come sleep <v Speaker 2>at my house.
