Speaker 3: This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.

00:00:34
Speaker 2: Now here's Matt Jones.

00:00:36
Speaker 4: Welcome everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio, Tuesday, October the twenty first time Matt Jones here in Lexington and studio where you can give Shallow Clark's Puppy Shop full live. We will be taking your calls all day. I still think this is a good time to hear what fans think. A five nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven. A Vision Auto glass text machine is seven seven two four five two five for in this edition sponsored by the T. J. Smith Office called Tji'll make them pay. I've got Ryan and Drew here in studio. Shannon is in Louisville, guys. It's a beautiful day outside. Tomorrow and Thursday we'll be at the bar, Friday will be at Don Franklin. But we're here today, and how's everything going well?

00:01:17
Speaker 5: Drama just to get in the building this morning they closed down the parking garage here at the City Center building.

00:01:22
Speaker 4: What is the age where Drew weather and parking becomes the dominant part of your conversation? Because Ryan has reached that age. When I say that what's going on? And the only thing he brings the first thing he brings up is parking. I do think he's reached that age. Yeah, And I was in the elevator. You've mentioned elevator small talk a woman earlier. She just had to say weather, like I said, good morning, but she had to talk about the weather outside.

00:01:46
Speaker 6: So it's those two things.

00:01:47
Speaker 4: It's the worst thing Shannon about coming into this building is the elevator smart small talk because I don't I don't, I don't know what to say to people.

00:01:55
Speaker 2: Don't say anything. Do you know what you're not obligated to say?

00:01:57
Speaker 4: I agree with I wait too long. Then I know what's coming. What how's the basketball team looking this year? Like, I know that's coming.

00:02:06
Speaker 2: You say good, and that's exactly what I say.

00:02:09
Speaker 4: I say, I think we're gonna be really good. But then like the conversation just ends.

00:02:15
Speaker 6: And then you just want those numbers to start calimbing, and.

00:02:17
Speaker 4: Then we're just staring at each other. And I'm kind of with you, Shanon, and I think it would have been less awkward if we had said nothing at all.

00:02:24
Speaker 3: I'm good with an awkward conversation or just an awkward situation in general.

00:02:28
Speaker 2: I don't care.

00:02:28
Speaker 5: It's better to have eight people in the elevator than just two people.

00:02:32
Speaker 4: The two is the two is the worst. When you're just sitting there staring at each other. And people are nice, but I think they feel obligated. They can't stand it to say something.

00:02:43
Speaker 7: You know who.

00:02:44
Speaker 5: Billy's like maybe the worst at it. He says so he can't stand it. He feels like he's got to say something.

00:02:49
Speaker 4: And he'll like say something inappropriate. He'll be like, you have nice feet, woman.

00:02:53
Speaker 6: Billy talks me working out at the gym, so he'll talk to people anywhere.

00:02:55
Speaker 4: Yeah, and I'm like, you can't say you have nice feet woman, Like you can't say that in in an.

00:03:01
Speaker 7: Elevator, you say it to a man.

00:03:03
Speaker 4: No, you can't say it to anybody. You don't. You there's a general rule of thumb you don't talk about people's feet when you see, at least until you know them very well. I can tell you Joe Crawford's got the ugliest feet I've ever seen in my life. But that doesn't mean that you you should bring it up to everybody.

00:03:19
Speaker 6: I stick to the script. Hey, how's it going? Look at my phone? Look at my phone? Look at my phone. Have a good day, though it is you always have up, but look at my phone.

00:03:28
Speaker 4: Got an answer? You wouldn't like it, Like if they were like, well, actually, Drew, you know the the mortgage prayment's gonna be tough to come up with, then you're stuck. My stomach's hurting. Yeah, that's true. You don't want that. If I'm nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven. If you have thoughts, let me know. All right, So here's here's what I thought we would do to start today. You know, we've got uh UK Purdue coming up Friday today are you getting excited about that?

00:03:53
Speaker 6: Very excited, very very very excited. You know, I'd rather have low, but just having the number one team in Ropperena. I know it's not going to count towards the resume, but you don't get that very often.

00:04:03
Speaker 4: Yeah, and Pope was at the what is it the Lexington like talk to the fans event?

00:04:11
Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm not sure what.

00:04:12
Speaker 4: I don't know. It's it's the Lex Louisville Alumni Club. Sorry, lunching Louisville Up, I'm not lunching. I am seen that for many years. I really like it. They get a huge crowd at that thing, like I mean, I don't know what it was yesterday, but having done it a number of times, they get a massive crowd.

00:04:29
Speaker 7: They having a big ballroom and it's always full.

00:04:31
Speaker 4: It's full, and you get the best like flat chicken, string green bean every time.

00:04:39
Speaker 6: I was about to say that, the banquet chicken and the green beans.

00:04:41
Speaker 4: Every time you get the chicken the green bean salad where you could either choose ranch or Italian.

00:04:47
Speaker 6: And you have to awkwardly pass the dressing around the table and you're always like, I don't know what it is.

00:04:51
Speaker 4: It is No that's that's that event. But he spoke at it with his wife. Yeah, it's interesting. He I like that though. Instead of having some goober uh interview, you have your wife interview. He said that Jalen Lowe was doing great, and he said something to the effect of I'm gonna have to hold myself back from playing him, which suggested to me, even though he didn't say officially, probably not playing, but maybe playing when the season starts. Is that kind of how you heard it?

00:05:20
Speaker 6: Kinda my first takeaway if you're watching that video, the moment he says he's okay, someone just shatters the glass plate. They were so excited. It's very loud. You think like Stone Cold is about to come in right as he gives the big news. But between that and people seeing low at the volleyball game without a sling and kind of being mobile and smiling, and then hearing a few people say that the MRI went all right, I'm feeling pretty confident, like you wants.

00:05:43
Speaker 4: Some what would you would you like him just to sit out these two games? Well, there's two before Louisville, right, two real games Nickel stayed and something I would try to get him in one of those I would totally agree with you. That's exactly exhibitions. I wouldn't push him, but you got to play against little you don't have to. I hope he plays against them.

00:06:02
Speaker 5: Yeah, tiptoe in, take baby steps. That maybe that game right before lit was it Valpole?

00:06:06
Speaker 7: The one right.

00:06:06
Speaker 5: Before he knocked the rust off of that game to getting ready for the Louisville game.

00:06:14
Speaker 4: All right, So we'll talk because I do want to talk a little bit about uk Per doing what we expect. But I think we have to start with Mark Stoops. He did his Coaches show last night and he had a quote that I think everyone is is sort of focusing on from last night. Here was his quote. I'll read it to you. He said, I understand how people may feel about me. That's understandable, and that's warranted. And then he went on to kind of thank the fans for how positive they've been with the players. Now, I don't know about you, but when I read that quote, I understand how fans feel about me. That's understandable and that's warranted. First of all, I give him a little bit of a salute for that, because you know he's often been over the year. Is kind of defiant at criticisms. But this goes with what I've been talking about the last few weeks, which is that I think he feels all this and he knows how the fans feel, and he really wants to win the fans over. But when I heard that last night, well I give him credit for saying it, it also sounded a little kind of resignation. Y. I don't mean like he's going to resign, but like resigned to his fate. Do you agree with that?

00:07:28
Speaker 6: I do, And I heard it first in his postgame comments Saturday. I've mentioned a few times we've heard from Pope late Saturday or Pope stoops late Saturday night, his Monday press conference, and then his call in show, and he sounds like a completely different human than he has at any point up until now.

00:07:44
Speaker 4: Do you think he walked off the field Saturday kind of knowing?

00:07:47
Speaker 6: I think it sounds that way.

00:07:49
Speaker 4: Yeah.

00:07:50
Speaker 6: I think for a long time he's either just fully believed he could turn it around, or he's kind of been in denial of how upset people are, and the press conference have kind of been sticking to the script. Honestly, you could play about any of his press conferences and they sound about the same over the last few months because he's just sticking to what he's you know, he's got his message. But Saturday was very apologetic, very much, which is crazy because it was the best they've played.

00:08:13
Speaker 4: I mean, you could make a strong argument that might have been the best game the team has played in two and a half years. And yet it's almost like he when it didn't work, was kind of like, Okay, this is how it's going to be.

00:08:28
Speaker 7: That was the really the fourth time he said it.

00:08:31
Speaker 5: He did it with Tom Leach on the postgame show, he did with the media in the postgame interview, he did it in the media month yesterday afternoon, and he did last night and the Coaches Show.

00:08:39
Speaker 4: But when he said it's understandable how people feel about me, and it's warranted, I mean, that's a level of and he was talking big picture, like he wasn't talking about losing Saturday night. That's just a level of self reflection that you you don't see a lot of coaches do. They don't, you know.

00:09:02
Speaker 5: It's like that it's a defeatist attitude. You already admit your failure, and coaches just do not do that.

00:09:07
Speaker 4: But defeatus, though makes it sound like it's almost lame. I actually think it's kind of positive that he understands, you know what I mean. Yeah, I didn't see it like we're quitting.

00:09:19
Speaker 6: No, no, no, no, I didn't see that either.

00:09:20
Speaker 4: I didn't. I saw it almost as Look, I get it, I get why you feel this way, and to some extent it makes it sad to me. When I watched his postgame comment Saturday night. I didn't watch h muntill after my postgame show, but I remember thinking, this is is kind of sad. So with that mind, like, how do what happens over the next few weeks leave aside the games, whether we win or lose. But we have like this six week march coming up, and there's been so much anger. Do you think we trail off into sadness of a love lost? Like Billy tried to describe to Shannon this morning awkwardly during the pre show. What do you think.

00:10:07
Speaker 6: Maybe if they do some kind of announcement. For the longest time, I've thought Stoops wants to be here, he wants to fight through this. He doesn't care what everybody's saying. He's literally just going back to work, like he says every time you ask. Now, it feels like he sees the end is near. He wants to be loved here a long time. You know, this was a big alumni weekend. Rich Brooks was everywhere. He probably wants to be that one day where people come back and love him and possible.

00:10:31
Speaker 4: Okay, so let's let's assume that's true. Let's assume he wants that because I actually agree with you he wants that. What's the best way to make that happen? Right, Like, if you if you want to have a day where you come back here and you get the rich Brooks receptions, what's the best way for these next six weeks to go.

00:10:51
Speaker 5: They're gonna have to beat somebody and it may have to be the Louive at the end of the season, get one good win and then maybe beat Louisville.

00:10:57
Speaker 4: And I think, okay, well, let's say that happens and they still have to part, right, right, So how do you part in a way that allows him?

00:11:06
Speaker 6: I think it almost has to be Mark, like, this isn't working.

00:11:09
Speaker 4: But I'm gonna have to give up twenty million dollars feel good? I Mean, I've wondered, did he just go and be like, because Shannon's like that, I don't want to feel good.

00:11:19
Speaker 2: No, I'd rather feel bad and have twenty million dollars.

00:11:22
Speaker 6: Yeah, but there's way, like he could say, look the sixty day thing, I'll work with you. There there's ways he could help.

00:11:29
Speaker 4: Is that the way? Yes? What like if he were to come out and say, I want my money, but to keep you all from being in a spot, we can pay it out over the course of the contracts. Do you think fans would say, thank you Mark for doing this a solid and he could have that Rich Brooks role.

00:11:53
Speaker 6: It would definitely help. And I don't know if he do the length of the contract, but any any acknowledgment that I should go. But I don't want to hurt you all anymore than I have these last couple of years. I love this place. I didn't want you to get back, get it get this bad.

00:12:06
Speaker 4: But it is.

00:12:07
Speaker 6: Let me help a little bit. I mean, he's not gonna just would you do that chanting they don't pay me.

00:12:11
Speaker 4: But would you do pay me throughout the contract rather than in sixty days.

00:12:17
Speaker 2: Why did we sign that contract to begin with?

00:12:18
Speaker 8: Then?

00:12:18
Speaker 4: If but we have I mean, that's a different conversation. But if you were him, would you agree to that. No, It's like you would just say, give me the money.

00:12:27
Speaker 2: Give me the money.

00:12:28
Speaker 3: That's why we signed the contract. That's why it's word of the way that it is.

00:12:31
Speaker 4: Even if it makes the fans.

00:12:33
Speaker 2: Fans, fans will be fine, they'll be happy when he's gone.

00:12:37
Speaker 4: Okay, what about you, Right, I think I think you would do.

00:12:40
Speaker 7: It as long as I got my money.

00:12:42
Speaker 5: I think I know I'd be okay with extending the deadline, Like even I like for four or five sixty, as long as I got my money.

00:12:48
Speaker 4: Somehow it might be better for you so you didn't spend it amen, Yeah, you know, because Right would be one of these people who'd be like, immediately need to buy this and that.

00:12:59
Speaker 7: So if that happens, let's say in year three of the buyout, he takes a job with Virginia Tech.

00:13:06
Speaker 4: Then it would I think it would be offset some of it.

00:13:09
Speaker 5: Yeah, So I think that's another way and he can kind of get back in our good graces.

00:13:13
Speaker 4: But then again there's the question. What's interesting to me is I think a lot of coaches don't care about the good grace. A lot of coaches are what Shannon is articulating, give me my money. I mean, Jimbo Fisher didn't care about the good graces. James Franklin didn't care about the good graces. But I kind of think Mark does.

00:13:31
Speaker 6: And all those guys you mentioned have been in a lot of places. This is the place's only been a head coach. It's right over a decade. He doesn't, I mean, other than be an assistant. He doesn't really know what it's like to be the top dog anywhere else. We doesn't have any other connections that could pull him there.

00:13:43
Speaker 4: But he'd also be I mean, he could be our rich Brooks after Rich Brooks. He could, Yes, he could, he could because there are positive things that happen here.

00:13:52
Speaker 7: He's still the wainnest coach ever here.

00:13:54
Speaker 4: So I just think it's interesting when I saw that quote, especially the it's warranted. That is it change of tune from him, because he used to say, like, your criticism in this game is warranted, But then he'd be like, but you know what, we've won a lot here, people like back up. And now he's shifting that it's warranted seemingly to the state of the program. And that is a shift in the way he's talking.

00:14:21
Speaker 7: A big shift. You're right, he alway used to go yeah but yeah.

00:14:23
Speaker 4: He would always be a yeah, but don't you all understand that was kind of his Well that's going away now, and I just find that interesting. I don't think i'd heard him talk like that before until the postgame press conference, and then yesterday he if I'm nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven text machine is seven seven two seven seven four five two five four. We will take a break. We'll be right Backscasar, welcome back. Take you sports radio. I'm gonna reach you. Some of the comments here on the text machine, Well Versus says Matt, I agree with what you and Drew said. If Mark we're a step aside and lew uk to pay the bill out over the time, I would salute him and welcome him back in the future. I think there's a lot of people that feel that way. One person writes Matt. I think it would be good if he would spread the buy out over the remainder of the deal and agree that one million dollars of a year of it will go to nil. I don't think he's gonna do that.

00:15:19
Speaker 2: Why would he?

00:15:19
Speaker 4: Why would he do this.

00:15:20
Speaker 7: That's if he starts coaching somewhere else.

00:15:22
Speaker 4: I'm gonna give you one million dollars of my money for you to get the players that I'm trying to I'm not coaching, and yeah, that maybe I'm trying to recruit against I think Drew. That's probably unlikely.

00:15:32
Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't even think he would agree to the length of the deal. But longer than sixty days could help a little bit. Yeah, person, give me ninety days.

00:15:39
Speaker 4: One person says, Matt, why didn't he do something like Otani with the Dodgers where they pay a lot of it on the back end. Well, Otani did that, but he's on the team. We would be we would be getting rid of him, Shannon, and then paying on the back end. That's a little different than Otani still being on the team.

00:16:00
Speaker 8: Do it.

00:16:00
Speaker 3: Yeah, that doesn't make any sense. And I think he's gonna stick with it. I'm saying, hey, you gotta pay me my money. Yeah, I don't think he's gonna give on that.

00:16:07
Speaker 4: You know he got, Oh, Tony got a seven hundred million dollar contract. I saw a story yesterday that the Dodgers have already made that back.

00:16:12
Speaker 7: Oh, easily.

00:16:13
Speaker 4: Probably we say, easily seven hundred million dollars, a lot of money, but apparently with like in Japan. Yeah, yeah, I mean that's amazing.

00:16:22
Speaker 6: Don't they play a preseason game over there?

00:16:24
Speaker 8: They have?

00:16:24
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean they do so, Yeah, it's pretty Did you watch the baseball.

00:16:28
Speaker 7: Last loved it?

00:16:29
Speaker 4: Yeah?

00:16:29
Speaker 7: I'm into it.

00:16:30
Speaker 4: George Springer hit the three run home run.

00:16:33
Speaker 5: Thirty six years old. Guy limping around the bases, he's hurt and hits the home.

00:16:37
Speaker 4: Run, got his Kurt Gibson moment.

00:16:40
Speaker 7: Kurt Gibson moment.

00:16:41
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, it was. It was exciting in Toronto. You know, all of Canada is happy, like, uh, we hit him with tariffs. They make The World Series used to really drive Max crazy. We call it the World Series. He's like, only two countries play. I don't know how you can say it's a world series when you are not in the rest of the world. But nevertheless, are you excited to watch Dodgers Blue Jays?

00:17:03
Speaker 6: Well, remember I'm banned from the Blue Jays, so I can't watch. Yeah, but my favorite thing is I remember little Chubby Vlad Junior standing by his dad. Then that picture went viral. It was like, this kid's going to the World Series now, so I thought that was pretty cool.

00:17:15
Speaker 4: The I love moments of people celebrating and that video after the home run of the place going insane, that's very cool. Like any sort of thing like that.

00:17:25
Speaker 9: I love.

00:17:26
Speaker 5: Yeah, a friend of mine sent me some video of outside the stadium. Out in the streets outside the stadium, people were, you know, celebrating party and it makes you want to be there.

00:17:34
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a very Candida thing. I feel like they used to do. They did that for the Raptors too. They all stand out. I mean other cities do it too, but they stand out there. It feels like the whole country and watches it. Are you four Shannon, the Blue Jays or the Dodgers.

00:17:45
Speaker 3: Oh, the Dodgers. I've hated the Blue Jays for thirty three years. Remember nineteen ninety two the Braves Carter Well, that was the Phillies.

00:17:52
Speaker 4: Ninety one, nine.

00:17:53
Speaker 3: Three was the Phillies and Blue Jays. Braves were ninety two with the Blue Jays. Blue Jays won it back to back years.

00:17:59
Speaker 4: Yes, but was on that boot that Blue Jays team, Steve Ya, David David Cole, that's right, yes, David.

00:18:09
Speaker 2: Von White in center.

00:18:10
Speaker 4: Field Oh wow, that's.

00:18:13
Speaker 2: John Olde at first base.

00:18:15
Speaker 4: Was he on the team there?

00:18:16
Speaker 9: Yeah?

00:18:16
Speaker 7: He worked a helmet.

00:18:19
Speaker 4: When he played in the field. Yeah. I feel like the Dodgers are going to keep winning forever. We might as well have somebody different.

00:18:26
Speaker 6: We can't let the Dodgers win.

00:18:30
Speaker 3: Candy Maldonado, Oh my goodness, Dave Winfield, right.

00:18:35
Speaker 4: That's playing. Stop, Let's go to bird. What's up? Bird? Stop with ed spray. No one wants to hear ed spray. Go ahead, where's the d.

00:18:44
Speaker 7: Uh?

00:18:45
Speaker 9: So?

00:18:45
Speaker 10: I'm not calling to complain about you cannot having a grass field I can normally do. But what I do want to ask you, guys, was if you saw Shannon Sharp, Chad Ocho Cinco and Johnny Manziel Johnny Manziel's comments post.

00:18:56
Speaker 4: Game I did. Here's the thing. I love o Jo Sko being part of the whole UK thing. He was nice to Mario. I love all that, So I'm pro o Chosenko. I also have learned that you have to be careful when you like break down their analysis totally because o Cho Cinco said all Kentucky does is run draw plays, and then somebody looked up they didn't run one draw play the whole game, so you know, but his point about they don't throw down field is correct. But I saw he basically criticized the play calling the whole game. I have criticisms on the end, but I would also argue, though Bird, the play calling is what I mean. We were in overtime with the team that's got a lot more talent than us. You know, yeah, I would agree.

00:19:40
Speaker 10: And also I wanted to say I was at the game, had a great time at the game. But Chad Johnson, or tocho Cenko, said he heard students and everybody chanting fire stoops.

00:19:51
Speaker 2: I did not see that.

00:19:51
Speaker 10: Maybe that was just a student section thing.

00:19:54
Speaker 4: I did not hear. I appreciate the call. I did not hear it in the crowd where I was sitting, but I was like are away from the students, so I didn't hear it. Did you heard it a lot after the game. Now I'm in the press box, so I don't hear the fans. But I heard it like in the park. You know, we're out there for the rapid reaction. I heard people going to their cars yelling it, not so much during the action. It is interesting to me about stoops it's the exact opposite of what it was with Cal two years ago. The younger fans dislike Stoops the most, which is all yeah, because they were the ones. The younger fans a lot of them that wanted to keep Cal the most, whereas the older fans are kind of now. I think in this case, probably most people are ready to move on. But it does seem like Ryan, it's the younger fans twenty five thirty and under that are the most anti students.

00:20:43
Speaker 7: I hadn't thought about that, but you're right, and we saw the I think it's.

00:20:46
Speaker 4: Just because they were never used to us being bad.

00:20:48
Speaker 7: They don't know UK football.

00:20:50
Speaker 5: They don't know those days we were one in ten and two and ten and those back in those days.

00:20:55
Speaker 4: I mean, I think when you now, there are older people who want him gone a lot too, but the younger fans have just a and I think part of it is the younger fans sided with Cal and the Stoops versus col rivalry a few years ago.

00:21:10
Speaker 6: I see a lot of I think the younger fans are meaner the old people. They can still be mad, but they'll be like he had a good few years. But you know, they at least add a caveat if I have some positive memories. A lot of young people are just like, get them out of here now. The older people are still mad, but they at least throw in a it was good for a little while.

00:21:26
Speaker 4: I mean, we do those of us that are a little older do have the I remember when we were pitt them right, and that's a little different than we should win. But one of my arguments is losing its strength, which is this argument that you can't win at these other places. I just I don't think that's true anymore.

00:21:47
Speaker 6: It's not true.

00:21:48
Speaker 4: I think the landscape has changed, and if you get the right guy, you can. Maybe you can't win a national championship, but you could make a playoff at a lot of these places.

00:21:56
Speaker 7: Right, You're exactly right. You know the student section, I know it was completely full.

00:22:01
Speaker 5: They were loud, and they were there early, Yes they were, they were there very early.

00:22:06
Speaker 7: So yet they still love the program, love the support.

00:22:08
Speaker 5: But yet they're gonna turn on their coach and yeah, Josh, what's up.

00:22:11
Speaker 9: Josh Josham Henderson, Kentucky. I just wanted to call you guys and see if you would give a shout out to my son and his football team. He plays for North Middle School here in Henderson, and he's playing in the state playoffs tonight. So I just want to see if you guys wish them good luck and wish the team luck.

00:22:33
Speaker 4: And I do wish them luck, you know, I wish Henderson North luck. I appreciate the call. I don't like to take sides in these middle school football games. I'm for all Kentucky teams.

00:22:44
Speaker 7: Yeah, we're If they're playing Middlesborough, we don't know who they're playing.

00:22:46
Speaker 6: I'm from Madisonville, so I don't know if I can speak on that one. Yeah, if they're playing Middlesborough, go Jackets. By the way, top two teams in the thirteenth region in football this year, both in Bell County. Bell County won Middlesborough too.

00:23:00
Speaker 8: Three.

00:23:01
Speaker 4: I don't know about them. We'll be right back to SKSR. TJ.

00:23:04
Speaker 2: Smith, personal injury attorney called TJ. He'll make them pay now.

00:23:08
Speaker 3: More of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage.

00:23:11
Speaker 2: Here's Matt Jones.

00:23:13
Speaker 4: Welcome back Tukey Sports Radio. AF. I'm nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven text machine seven seven two seven four five two five four uh Don Mattingley, by the way, is on the Blue Jays. Did you know that it never made a World Series? And he's a bench coach on the Blue Jays. So I feel like you were You were a Don Mattingley guy, weren't you.

00:23:29
Speaker 5: Well he's from Evansville, Indiana, and he when I was working in media in Evansville, he was that was he was in his heyday.

00:23:35
Speaker 7: So he's a big heron.

00:23:36
Speaker 5: I got all Don Minningley autographs, I got one of his bats, I got a bunch of stuff.

00:23:41
Speaker 2: This come up?

00:23:42
Speaker 4: Who Don Mattingley?

00:23:44
Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, he was talking about it last week.

00:23:46
Speaker 4: Who you and Don Mattingley? Yeah, well, I feel like I've heard that story forty five times, but I still like it because he gets excited he's from Evansville, and then he it's almost like he has the Don Magley script in his head and he just hits the button chanded and then it comes out.

00:24:00
Speaker 3: Because you said, like that, what were the big stories when you were there doing the news?

00:24:02
Speaker 2: And he said Don matting Line matting Lee.

00:24:04
Speaker 4: You always say Don Mattingly, that's his was the story.

00:24:07
Speaker 6: Evansville forces Don Mattingly on you when you crossed the bridge they're like, Hey, by the way, did you know Don matting Lee's from here? You should go eat at mating Le's and just mattingly matting the Madian.

00:24:14
Speaker 4: One person writes Matt the you are exactly right about the younger fans. They're not used to losing games like that. We've lost games like we lost Saturday one hundred times in the past. It is true. One of the things Stoops did during his tenure is he got us to kind of forget the oh no house, Kentucky gonna blow this right because he had a number of years where we won games like this. Yes, absolutely, you know, I mean really there was a time though, even in his first couple of years, where you just knew, how was this gonna fall apart and break our hearts? Remember those first few years here. We had that game we played at Mississippi State. We almost beat him. We watched it with the Sklar brothers, if you remember, out at Drake And then like we lost to Florida when they the play clock was at zero and they didn't call it. You remember that, Yeah, And we had the holding call that one year, Like there were all these years and then all of a sudden he turned it around and we started winning those games. But people forget that. For most of my Kentucky football life, we lost games like Saturday all the time. Yeah, every time a game was like that, it's how's it gonna break my heart?

00:25:23
Speaker 6: Kentucky football fans can name one hundred plays where we lost a game. But then something switched and you started getting your lamar fuone boy, you're McGinnis field. God, you're Bud Dupree run back. You're CJ. Conrad in Missouri at South Carolina running back the two point version. It's like Kentucky started making the winning plays in the fourth quarter.

00:25:39
Speaker 5: And those college kids now were eight, nine, ten years old going to these games tailgating and when it was fun, so they remember those glory days.

00:25:47
Speaker 4: All right, So I'm gonna throw out this in between these phone calls, do a couple quick stories. Did you see big z? Visich said, I got contacts and now I can see the rim for the first time in three years. First of all, I should have done that before. Remember the Harrison twins. Oh yes, squints and Andrew Harrison squinting. Then they're like, oh, he got contacts and he actually did play better after he got contacts. Is there a chance there's a big Z revival in Illinois this year because he could actually see.

00:26:20
Speaker 6: If not for that Georgia game. I need him to explain the Georgia game. Was he just aiming at the middle rimuck blind?

00:26:28
Speaker 9: Look, it.

00:26:30
Speaker 6: Is funny that he's played basketball for this long, and you know, especially at Arkansas and Kentucky. When he was here, there's all this technology, all these doctors. At no point, no one's been like, hey man, you can't But.

00:26:39
Speaker 4: Do you think cal teams don't check eyesight? Welling with Andrew Harrison, Yeah, that he was the same way. He was like, I couldn't see last year, and now you don't see.

00:26:50
Speaker 3: He's to have a basic physical I mean, you would think they would check stuff like that.

00:26:53
Speaker 4: I don't think they check your eyesight.

00:26:54
Speaker 2: We need to start.

00:26:56
Speaker 7: I'm gonna be on the side of the fence that his eyesight was.

00:27:00
Speaker 5: Okay when he was here, and he started getting bad at Arkansas and they got the Illinois and it really got bad. Something about the Illinois air messed with these eyesight.

00:27:08
Speaker 9: Man.

00:27:08
Speaker 11: Well, let's say if he has a big year in Illinois, shoots the ball really well, that would be hilarious if it was like, oh, oh this is what I know, this is easy?

00:27:20
Speaker 4: What Yeah, because you're right. If there's three rims and you have to hit.

00:27:23
Speaker 2: One of them, game as the one in the middle.

00:27:26
Speaker 4: Yeah, so uh interesting to see. But yes it was. It was it Andrew Aaron that couldn't see it was Andrew right.

00:27:32
Speaker 7: Well that it's kind of both.

00:27:33
Speaker 6: Of them, honestly. Yeah, they both squinted a lot.

00:27:36
Speaker 4: Do twins have the same eyesight?

00:27:39
Speaker 7: They probably had the same makeup.

00:27:41
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, are you just saying that or do you know?

00:27:45
Speaker 7: Well, I was married to a twin for a long time and they.

00:27:49
Speaker 4: All talked about their eyesight.

00:27:50
Speaker 7: I thought at their sight.

00:27:52
Speaker 4: You took her and her sister and both started shandon. They went and got their eyesight measured.

00:27:57
Speaker 2: All the time. Yeah, together, let me see better. One or two.

00:28:00
Speaker 4: I didn't rise you were married to a twin.

00:28:02
Speaker 7: My first wife is a twin.

00:28:03
Speaker 4: Ever pull any pranks? No, no antics that they did? Did they do they do it with you? Did you ever chanced to see if you knew which one was witch?

00:28:13
Speaker 7: Now with me? But they did it with another guy back in Owensborough.

00:28:16
Speaker 2: So does that mean you were attracted to her sister.

00:28:19
Speaker 7: Let's not get into this.

00:28:22
Speaker 2: It looks exactly.

00:28:23
Speaker 4: This is a fair point. I have, Shane, and I have wondered that exact thing. You date a twin, you attracted to your wife? Are you allowed to say you're attracted the system?

00:28:30
Speaker 2: I mean, I think it's probably implied, right.

00:28:34
Speaker 6: I mean, it's it's something you don't answer because the no could go wrong.

00:28:37
Speaker 4: You can't answer. But yeah, no, oh, you're not attracted to me. If you say yes, you're attracted to her.

00:28:43
Speaker 6: Sist, I think that's when you go I only have eyes for one person there. You don't even know you had a sister.

00:28:47
Speaker 4: Jacob, go ahead, Jacob.

00:28:50
Speaker 8: Hey, Matt, two questions for you. Question number one. I wanted to kind of hear what you think the best the best situation is for Kentucky football looking ahead. I know Van Dy is definitely on the rise. I don't think that game is winnable.

00:29:11
Speaker 4: You mean this year, this year, this year, yes, sir, well, I mean the best situation. If you were to say, okay, what if every single thing went right, then you would say, beat Florida, beat Auburn, steal one of Vandy, Louisville, get to six, I don't think that's going to happen. I think the most likely situation is we'll win one of these games. We'll pull one of these out. We'll finish four and eight. That's what I think is most likely. The worst situation is you go three and nine and after the Auburn or Florida game, the kind of team just quits and you get run out of the stadium by Louisville and you beat Tennessee Tech by three at the buzzers. I mean, like that's the worst scenario. But I think the most likely scenarios we steal one of these and we finished four and eight.

00:29:55
Speaker 8: Yeah. Yeah. Question number two a name that I've kind of been thinking about that I've not really heard a whole lot of people mentioned former offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson.

00:30:07
Speaker 4: Yeah, we can't offensive coordinator. I mean, it didn't work here. Like, that's not gonna make me excited if Yeah. I mean, I just I also think maybe, yeah, I don't want to get into it. I just that's probably not gonna happen. I mean, maybe that'll change, but I doubt it.

00:30:26
Speaker 8: Yeah, Yeah, it's I mean, I just yeah, I know that his uh, his tenure wasn't the best here, but he did come back and beat us with Southern myths, and you know.

00:30:36
Speaker 4: And he's obviously done a good job with Miami. Yeah, I appreciate the call. Let me ask you a question. I don't like to talk about other coaches when you have a coach. But you know what, it's Tuesday. All the names that are out there, what's the one that UK fans would be the most excited about? Okay, the one that if it was announced everybody goes crazy. Let me give and I mean realistic. Okay, So here are the realistic names in theory I could see being that some Rall will Stein, Brian Hartline, Dan Mullen. I don't know if James Franklin's realistic, but let's just throw him in there. I don't think Mitch would hire him for a variety of reasons. Let's throw him in there. Who am I missing that's out there? That could be someone that people would want.

00:31:29
Speaker 6: H I kind of like the Arizona State coach. I don't know if he would come here.

00:31:32
Speaker 4: I don't know if he would come here.

00:31:33
Speaker 7: He got some fire.

00:31:34
Speaker 4: Yeah, I like him too. I'm gonna say he probably wouldn't come but maybe, but he's already been the playoffs, so I don't know why he would do that. So let's just take those five I just said some are all stein hartlined, Mullin Franklin. Which of those gets introduced and fans are the most excited?

00:31:51
Speaker 6: I still think it's some raw by far Stein's popular, but I think a lot of the common fans still don't really know who it is. Some Rall played here, coached here, and that long ago, and it's been in the conversation for a couple of years, where if you've been paying attention at all, you know of who John Sumrall is right now. Then I would go Stein second for me, James frankl James Franklin is one hundred and fiftieth.

00:32:14
Speaker 4: But you'd think the young guys get people more excited than the names people know.

00:32:18
Speaker 6: Yes, And the idea of having, especially with some raw pope leading basketball and some raw leading football, you have two former players who are young and have endless energy. I think that would be fun.

00:32:28
Speaker 5: What about you, Drew's dead on it is John Summer at the top. Then there's a big drop. I think the will Stein just because we've been talking about John summerroll out for over two years.

00:32:36
Speaker 4: What if it was Dan Mohen.

00:32:38
Speaker 6: I don't know if Mitch would do that one, and I wouldn't love it, but it wouldn't be the worst thing.

00:32:43
Speaker 7: I would just wins. Yeah, I wouldn't hate it.

00:32:45
Speaker 4: I mean, he's won his reputation, he's won, he's he won more at Florida. I mean the only thing that got him out fired at Florida was losing to US. So, I mean he was he won like what nine or ten straight games in there at Florida or four years one, nine or ten. It's just they kind of didn't couldn't be a Mississippi state. He just kicked our tail every year. Yeah, and he's under He was undefeated at UNLV until last week. I just I would say that's a name. I mean, I I think the most likely scenarios we get one of these young guys. But I would just say, if it ends up happening, don't dismiss that name. I think we have a ad with some connections to him. Just something to keep in mind. Clayton and Cream was founded on a simple idea, all leather goods should last to life. At ime, they make everything from bags belts, wallets and much more. And the best part, they're doing it right here in Kentucky. You could check them out at Clayton and Croom dot com. That's crum Me dot com. I saw my mom and Larry stated my house last night. My mom's got a little like her little computer bag is Clayton and krom crum Me your yours as well. Look at that the retail stories on Shelby Street in New lou quality leather goods, built to last, Clayton and krewm. We'll take a break, Berry Back, KSR working Back, take sports radio interesting on the text machine. The names are all over the place. It's not all summer like. There are a lot of people whose number one choice seems to be Brian Hartline, and there's a lot of people who are saying will Stein, and there are people who say Mullen. A lot of people say nobody says James Franklin, which is odd because he's the most accomplished cope coach of the group. But I think everybody just hates it.

00:34:21
Speaker 6: And it's a record against in like meaningful games is not good.

00:34:24
Speaker 4: But I mean if our record in meaningful games were that, we'd still be fine with it. I mean we record in non meaningful games. This has not been great.

00:34:33
Speaker 6: Record against James Franklin in meaningful games as well.

00:34:36
Speaker 9: Know.

00:34:36
Speaker 4: Yeah, on Mullen, Now he ran up the score on us in state. Yes, yes, on Mullen.

00:34:44
Speaker 6: Barnhardt has the Florida A D and he had the Mississippi State I d Ad Mullam was there, so he will have his research done.

00:34:52
Speaker 4: Mull Yeah, saying Dillingham, that's not gonna happen because I mean he went to Arizona State too, So you know here, you're gonna leave your alma mater to come to Kentucky. I mean, why would you I forgot he was in alum Why would you do that?

00:35:05
Speaker 8: Right? Yeah?

00:35:06
Speaker 5: Somebody texted me the Vanderbilt coach the same thing. He went to Vanderbilt. He played at Vanderbilt.

00:35:10
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean the Vanderbilt coach didn't leave it either. You have to remember it, like those jobs are now equal or better than our jobs.

00:35:17
Speaker 7: Yes it is now.

00:35:18
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean that's so there might have been a day you could have taken the Vandy coach. I don't know that that day is here right now. It is here now. One person writes Matt, what do we think about Cutter Bowlie's improvement? Is he the quarterback of the future on who the court is on the coach, right, I mean, I think you could say, if Mark Stoops was the coach next year, I would want Cutter Bowie back, wouldn't you? I absolutely would. You know, you're trying to see him start to develop a little bit. And with Willie Wadriguez and Harley Gilmore. Who Willie wad Wigez.

00:35:48
Speaker 6: It is hard to say, I do that too, you said, Willy.

00:35:51
Speaker 7: Yeah, it's hard to say when you're talking fast. Willie Rodriguez, Yeah, har Harley Gilmore.

00:35:56
Speaker 5: They're all sophomores, you know, they're all something like can young and kind of build their office.

00:36:00
Speaker 4: He's doing Elmer Fudd Win Hews we Abb. I mean, I love Cutter bowleye and I we have seen him get better every single game. Yep. But your quarterback next year is going to depend on who your coach is. I think you you don't bring in someone if you bring in another coach, you don't. You don't let them cook the meal unless they can pick the ingredients. Right. So we saw that with h with Levin or with Cohen and Devin Lear Right, Devin Leary may have been perfectly fine, but it wasn't the kind of quarterback Cohen likes. Right, And the same thing might have been true with Bush and Vandergriff last year. Right.

00:36:43
Speaker 6: Yeah, but I would say unless that coach has one to bring, he might see Cutter Bowley Willie right, while we Gus Harley Gilmore, I'll throw in Jason Patterson. There's a lot of second year guys in that offense that you can work with.

00:36:55
Speaker 4: Adam Luckett made a great point on the pregame show. If you didn't hear. Luckett went looked at our and basically said, we had two recruiting classes that stuck that stat he said, blew me away. So think about this, Shannon, the twenty one and twenty was it twenty two and twenty three? The twenty two and twenty three recruiting class. We only have seven dudes left from.

00:37:18
Speaker 7: Those two classes and only come.

00:37:21
Speaker 4: On combined seven and we only have one that plays a lot. Yeah, Ty Bryant, I think was Afari?

00:37:28
Speaker 7: How far.

00:37:31
Speaker 4: That's crazy?

00:37:32
Speaker 6: And those are supposed to be your seniors and juniors, and it's a lot of names we know we could I mean, I think even will Cox, who's one of the seven on the team, is one of those. It doesn't plyly maybe he's not, but uh, regardless, the ones that left, a lot of them were big pieces of your program. Think about when you got like Keyante Goodwin and Grant Bingham as these huge offensive linemen and neither one of em played college football, but those were two of your biggest.

00:37:54
Speaker 4: And his point was you missed on all those. Now in that sophomore class, we hit on a lot of guys, but we don't. We didn't hit on any juniors and seniors, which is a good point. I hadn't really thought about it till he r team. I mean, we only have seven guys from two classes left. Blew my mind when he said, that's amazing. Jerry, go ahead, Jerry, hey man, I don't know how much you've been following us.

00:38:17
Speaker 12: And go with the suits going on Florida because that made effect in Kentucky because uh, you know, Sprader is really close to the athletic director down there, and he's got a he's on a podcast every weekend, he's does a radio show.

00:38:31
Speaker 4: But anyways, former Kentucky s I D Scott strictly so yeah, but go ahead, right right right.

00:38:37
Speaker 12: But but anyway, Sprader's got a office down the hall froom and sit in the box every week for the football games. And the two coaches Sprader talks about all the time are Bram and Drinklets and Bram most of all. And I suspect that if they don't get Kiffing, and everybody kind of thinks it's not gonna happen, but if they'll make Kiffin, say no, if they'll get Kiffin, they don't come out Jeff bom big job and little geting ready to pay back up the breaks charts keating.

00:39:05
Speaker 4: Yeah, but they would, I think, And I appreciate the call. I mean, now he might still want to go because you could win a national championship at Florida. But again, Jeff Brown went the Louisville like. Getting these guys to leave their alma monitors got to be hard, right.

00:39:16
Speaker 6: I agree, But I was surprised to see this. I got an email this morning said, oh, it's to be next Florida's next coach, and Jeff Brown was second under Lane Kiffin. Kiffin was two to one, bron was three to one. So something maybe is brilling me.

00:39:26
Speaker 4: Lane Kiffin has to take that job right, like he's made for that job. Lane Kiffin at.

00:39:32
Speaker 6: Florida seems that way. Ole miss could give him a big payday, but just the talent pool.

00:39:36
Speaker 4: In Gainesville, and I just think, well, you Lane Kiffin is like the spiritual heir to Steve Spurrier, right, like the same sort of brashness. I mean, I feel like, if you wanted to get Florida football back, Lane Kiffin is the way to do it right.

00:39:55
Speaker 7: It's like father son.

00:39:56
Speaker 5: They're like, yeah, the mentor protegee, that is the guy that perfect fit for Florida.

00:40:00
Speaker 4: He would be perfect mentalent Yep, yeah, Charlie, go ahead, Charlie.

00:40:07
Speaker 8: Hey man.

00:40:07
Speaker 13: I've been a huge Mark Steus fan, and I can take the football fans for my entire life. Met Mark coming off the plane at RJ. Corman's, almost had a heart attack at Papa John Stadium when they beating Lamar, and he bought my meal one time whenever I made him at a restaurant. So I've been a huge fan. Yeah, last the last few years has been pretty tough. If I'm Mark, I don't know what the drawback is, but I would take an extended contract to buy out of ten years, just spread my contract without ten years. What's the drawback to that?

00:40:41
Speaker 4: Well, I mean there's a drawback of you know, for people who have a lot of money, if it's the same amount, you'd rather have it up front so you can invest it and so you can make money on your own money. It's the same theory as to why banks want you to put money in so that they can go make the money from your money.

00:41:00
Speaker 2: Ten years of interest.

00:41:02
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's but it's exactly or ten not just interest, ten years of investment. So that's that's why the answer is. But you're exactly right. The core amount is the same and money is worth less over time because of inflation and other things. So that's the that's the counter to.

00:41:18
Speaker 13: I would I would say maybe if it's no strings attacked, he can go coach anywhere he wants to and make more money.

00:41:26
Speaker 4: Well, I mean I appreciate the cause he gonna get a job that he's not gonna get a job pays him this amount of money. No, not this amount of money. I mean he'll get a job, get a job, a lot of job. But I think he'll I honestly think his next job would probably be it like a Pack twelve or not packed. I doesn't exist anymore, but big twelve acc secondary school, right, it'd be it like I don't know, Boston College.

00:41:56
Speaker 6: Yeah, what if Iowa finally opened? I mean but today, I mean, would they if any team loved his style, it's all they know.

00:42:05
Speaker 4: Now, he would be good there. I don't think know any of these jobs. He's not gonna get paid when he gets paid here, not right now. I wouldn't think so.

00:42:13
Speaker 6: I don't think anybody's gonna be paying like what he's getting right now.

00:42:16
Speaker 4: Hey, if I'm nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven, we're gonna take a break, take your calls. Talk about a couple other things as well. It's KOSR
