Breaking Down the Phillies’ Trade Deadline

Speaker 2: Really nice night for the Phillies. Then they make a couple of trades. They had a nice lead against the Yankees.

Speaker 2: It was loud, Austin Hayes, who they picked up on Friday. It's a three run bomb in the in the second inning.

Speaker 1: Right in the right over the flower beds.

Speaker 2: Jim, you said the other day he's gonna love the flower beds and left field. And sure enough, man, he dropped the one right over the flower beds and left field. But then they ran into jazz chishlm and the and the bullpen couldn't hold it, so they lose. It was Tuesday night. They've lost ten out of their last fourteen. Kind of crazy. But they get some reinforcements coming. They've had some reinforcements Carlos Estevez pitch tonight they get Tanner Banks from the White Sox. What do we think of as trade deadline guys overall? Dave Dombrowski spoke a little while ago. Of course, you know he likes what they've they've done, But what's your first reaction to what the Phillies did?

Speaker 4: I think to me, it's not like sexy, certainly not as sexy as I think maybe a lot of fans wanted, because I think so much attention is paid to the trade deadline and people want big headlines. But I still think it was a positive. I think it has a chance to be a real positive. You can't judge a trade overnight. It takes time. I mean, people were up in arms that Hayes hadn't done anything in his first couple of days in the Phillies uniform.

Speaker 3: He had a great game tonight.

Speaker 4: Four RBI is a big catch in left field. So it takes time to evaluate a trade, you know. I I look at what they've done in the bullpen. They shipped out two guys, they brought in two guys. I think it's a rather significant makeover with a chance to be a legitimate upgrade, and you know, they added a right handed bat in the outfield, So I think they accomplished a lot of their goals. But I'm gonna just stick with what I've been saying all along. This thing is gonna be one one or lost. I mean, they're gonna win. They're gonna get to where they want to go with the existing core, the Harpers, the real Mudos, the Turners, Schwarzers, Boom Wheeler, Nola, those guys. This the team, the group that helped them build what is now the best record in the National League. They now only have a share of the best record in baseball because Cleveland has caught up to them. But the unit that has built, you know, the seven and a half game lead in the National League East here on the custop of August is what's gonna take them where they want to go. I think these additions that they've made at the trade deadline certainly can help, and I believe they will help. So all in all, I look at it as a positive trade deadline. Even though I don't think they had that earth shaker. I think they had a pretty good one. But time will ultimately tell.

Speaker 5: I mean, like you said, Jim, It wasn't sexy, but it was functional. I think that they addressed the needs that they needed to address. They wanted to get a right handed bat to add you know, a little of potential thump, you know, versus left handers. And I think Hayes is actually a pretty dark good player. He's been a good player for quite some time, just and wasn't playing very much for Baltimore, as we talked about before, and he did have a nice game day. I was happy for him and happy for David Nebowski and the ball club because you know, you want to see you want to try to see immediate results. A Stevis threw well, had a one two three inning. That was a good positive sign to get his feet wet, so to speak. And I really do believe that he's probably the biggest piece that they got as far as what they really needed. I neither they needed to bolster that bullpen because Alvarado has been leaking oil a little bit. Obviously, Soda was not pitching all that well or consistently, and I think it was a little addition by subtraction, by getting him by moving him, you know. And I think they did a nice job of sort of shifting some of the uh, some of the chairs on the deck. Now, I do believe that, just like Jim said, there's only one way that this team continues to have the kind of season that they're hoping to have, and that's and that's what the big boys at the top of the order doing, doing what they need to do to make this team go. Now, one of the things that they did extremely well during the course of the first part of the season. Two things that they did well where they scored early and they continue to score, they're not doing that. They scored early. Tonight was a perfect night, a typical night. Scored early first, what three runs in the first or so in the first couple of innings, and then they sort of stopped, you know, stop the flow. And the guys in that middle of that lineup, in the first part of the lineup, they just really need to produce. Good day by Hayes, good day bye by j T. Real Muto. That was That was a good thing to see because JT even really struggling. Also, Alec Bowm hit a ball on the screws today could have won the game. Unfortunately it was was snagged at in center field back Grisham but you know, he hasn't had a whole lot of RBIs lately. It's kind of astounding that he's only had like, what three or four RBIs in the last maybe twenty games. So these are all things that will straighten themselves out at some point. Will they be hitting and driving in runs and situationally hitting to the rate that they were prior to this, you know, forty game slide. I don't know. I know it'll be better. I don't know if it'll be at the same rate as they were before. But I mean, you know, again, we talk about it a lot the back of the baseball card. These guys are much better players in this They're in a collect the funk. You have Bryce Harper not swinging the bat well and Trey Turner not swingingly. But they're MVP type talents and they're not swinging the bats well enough to carry this team as they should. And when that starts happening, they'll start playing much better baseball.

Speaker 2: I think Bryce is like one for twenty five or or something like that over the past week. Trey Turner after everybody wants to know, like are they frustrated, are they mad?

Speaker 1: Are they frustrated? And Trey Turner was asked after the game to night, you know, team meeting. Do you believe in team meetings?

Speaker 2: Like, eh, Listen, team meetings are for when like players are just dogging it, not trying hard, and lack of effort isn't there and the focus is there, like we're trying, there's efforts there, the focus is there. We're just not playing really well right now, and you know they think they're going to get out of it. But you guys talked about like the lack of like the sexy move talking into some people in the in the press box tonight. Who was the there wasn't that move? I mean, like, okay, so let's make the argument. Who was the biggest bat moved? Is it Radius, the third baseman from the Rays that got that got sent to the Cubs?

Speaker 1: Was it Randy Rose Arena? Probably Randy Rose Arena? Right, that's hit he's and he's been hot lately. He's been picking up lately. But yeah, a big move.

Speaker 5: That was a big move, and that was a big, big payment, but but.

Speaker 5: Mean, he became a pretty good closer and he's throwing the ball extremely well. But he's doing it in Miami. Man, you just don't know how he's good. I mean, I mean it's a great move because he's throwing the ball well, and he's he's obviously developed, but he has not dominated until really this year and part of last year. He's really picked it up. But you know, you're giving up a lot. I mean, what did they give up? Four or five of their top best proSP five top six prospects. And I believe was he a rental? I think he's a is he a rentals? He under control? I think he's a rental.

Speaker 1: Yeah, I think he is a rental. Yes, And you're giving up Scott four guys like that has under control?

Speaker 5: I believe, Yeah, Yeah, I think that Tanner Scott is actually a rental. But I don't quote me on that because I do not positive. But that said, I mean, that's a huge, huge give to to get him and listen, he'll he'll do well for them because they really bolstered that bullpen. They got held a bullpen now with Adam Suarez and Scott back there, uh there in San Diego. But that said, I just don't know if there is that blockbuster guy that's out there that Cy young Ward. There's no Verlanders being moved, there's no Cliff LEAs, there's no Royal Hallidays, there's no Blake Snells of the world. And you know, those big names Corbyn Birds could have been traded last year wasn't traded. There's a lot of big, big moves that there's no Juan Soto's and so you know, that's you know.

Speaker 2: I think most Phillies fans were hoping for that big sexy move, but there really wasn't one out there.

Speaker 2: The Phillies were, you know, the White Sox were looking for something big from the Phillies. For Gret Crochet, they were it was like starting with Andrew Painter or Aiden Miller. And I don't think the Phillies were interested in.

Speaker 5: That, especially for a guy who doesn't I guess he wanted to dictate how many innings he wanted to pitch and.

Speaker 1: They wanted to protect himself a little bit in the postseason. I don't think that the.

Speaker 4: Fact that the Phillies were, you know, in the Phillies, Dave Nebraska.

Speaker 4: They're smart people. The fact that they were even interested in Crochet and I'm sure had talks, you know, with the White Sox about him, tells me they must have done some due diligence and some homework. Thinking they could have gotten creative and found a way to get him through the remainder of the season and be available in October if they had, you know, been in to consummate a deal.

Speaker 4: Think that, you know, that's probably being a reliever. If they could have could have pulled it off. I do think they you know, we're keeping tabs on him right until the end.

Speaker 2: Ken Rosenthal on the Fair Territory podcast, I was listening on the drive home last night part we are forgot to mention the top we're part of the File Territory network now, But I was listening to Fair Territory last night and he's he made a great point, which is, if this hadn't gotten out publicly that something, whatever team had acquired Garrett Crochet, they would have figured something out because think of it, right, what the asking price for Garrett Crochet would have been astronomical. So you get this guy, and think about it, Rubin, if you had gotten Gret Crochet, You're not gonna go We're gonna run you into the ground. You have to protect that asset as much as you possibly can. So if Garrett's like, hey, I'm concerned, I don't know, I am how, they probably get together and they figure it out. So you take care of the guy so you can pitch in the postseason, so in the next two.

Speaker 2: So I feel like if the Phillies had traded for him, if if they you know, they would have been able to figure it out.

Speaker 1: But you know, the asking price they felt was they felt was too steep.

Speaker 5: Yeah, I gotta believe it was just absolutely enormous. I mean, the Guardians picked up a starter from the Giants who basically is hurt and he's off coming off the I L I mean Alex cop So, I mean, there wasn't a whole ton of guys moved. I know Flarerty ended up moving, uh to the Dodgers. That was, but that to me is not necessarily a blockbuster. Now he's had a kind of kind of a bounce back year, but you know, he just don't. I just don't see those as blockbuster.

Speaker 2: I mean, even like Rosenthal wrote tonight that I think the Yankees were in on flarerty and they had some questions about his medicals, so they kind of backed out of that.

Speaker 1: So that kind of tells you something there as well. What did you guys think about this?

Speaker 2: I thought this was kind of the most interesting thing about the trade today.

Speaker 2: Get the lefty from the White Sox and you trade Gregory to kind of, you know, you move one guy in addition by subtraction, I thought that was you know, Tanner Banks really good against lefties.

Speaker 1: He's kind of he's not maybe as wild as Gregory.

Speaker 2: So I think the Phillies just kind of lost faith in Sodo and they were looking at clearly they were looking to find somebody to replace him with.

Speaker 4: And I also think Soto was unhappy with his role. Yeah, if you have an unhappy camper down there, you know, you add that to the list of reasons why it might be time to say goodbye. You know, on top of the fact he hasn't performed, he wanted a chance to pitch late in the game.

Speaker 3: High leverage. You got one, he didn't. He didn't grab it. I got it.

Speaker 4: Recently, just didn't grab it when Alvarado was having his little mix up there. So yeah, it seems like maybe auditioned by subtraction. The Orioles now are teaming with former Phillies and that both kimberl soo, Sir Anthony. So we'll see what happens down there.

Speaker 5: And we'll see if they comes back to bite them a little bit, because neither one of those guys for me or trust guys like they once were at some point in their careers. And as of late now, you know, the bullpen is awfully volatile, and I guess they're hoping that those guys can bounce back and gain the confidence that they need to have success in the back end. But maybe the change of scenery for them will work out. Who knows, But you know, the Phillies have to operate in their own system. Okay. If if the guys aren't doing their job on their club, then I get it. Then you got to move them on. And and if they're not buying into what especially in Sodo's case, they're not buying into the role, which is be ready to pitch whenever for Rob Thompson, then maybe he's not the right guy to be there. And and you know, we'll see what happens with the next guys.

Speaker 4: I see Banks is kind of the third lefty in this pen behind Strom and Alvarado. It's really imperative that Strom and Alvarado turn it around to start pitching like the Stram and Alvarado we saw, you know, earlier in the season, and we seen you know, at other points, you know, last year. I mean Strom, I know, I know it's tough. He's facing that that lineup he walked to and then gives up a bomb tonight to Jazz Chisholm, who has what four of them in two games against the Phillies.

Speaker 5: And one of the things that's really been that's bothered me is, you know, when you lose leads, it's because you you give free passes. We've talked about this. You cannot walk people out of the bullpen. I don't care how good they are, especially when you have the lead. Make them hit you into the lead them, make them beat you with their bats, not with the walks. And you know, Strom is a guy that typically goes right after guys. You know, he didn't get a couple of calls against him, went had a couple of calls against him with uh, you know, with Aaron Judge hitting. But you just can't walk people out of the bullpen. It doesn't matter whether it's Barry Bonds or whether it's uh, you know, Eric Bolpi or whatever the case may be. You need to make sure you throw st kes and uh and making make him beat you with the bat rather than allowing rallies to start with walks.

Speaker 1: Yeah, that seems to be the point of frustration for Rob Thompson and regarding the team that should be.

Speaker 2: It's like they just got to get back and start pounding the strike zone again, you know Strom and straight You're right, Ruben, like Strom is just he's he doesn't He hasn't walked to anybody all year. Really, he's just been throwing strike after strike after strike and then today comes back to bite him.

Speaker 2: It was if you were it was a great atmosphere, it was. It really was a great game, just the back and forth. You've got Jazz Chisholm, who Phillies fans know all too well. You know, he was rumored to be, you know, a potential candidate for the Phillies. Even I didn't believe that for a second. And then he hits two home runs a night and just just crushes him.

Speaker 4: Mark Lighter starts today Mark Letter junior, old friend with played with the Phillies. Good guy from up by the Jersey Shore. I mean, he starts today in Cincinnati with the Cubs. He's traded to the Yankees, where his father used to pitch. He apparently got a flight into Philadelphia.

Speaker 2: Guys, which I just kind of realized Gregor Risoto had his son at the ballpark today. So what a weird moment that must have been for him. You know, like they call I guess they call him, and they usually call you into the manager's office. I guess, all you've been traded. And he's got to go out and tell his son. All right, let's pack up and go.

Speaker 5: Yeah, a lot of people forget about, you know, who was affected by all this. It's not really just the players. It's the families, it's the wives, it's the parents. I mean, uh, there's there's a lot of people who are affected by, you know, by the moves that are made, and and uh, you tend to forget that. There's there's a whole village out there. The village helped him get to the you know, big leagues, to get to the place where he was, and then you know, that village has to kind of move and be displaced and that and that's a tough thing, but but that's part of the business of the game. It's been like that for many, many years. And it's just unfortunate that, uh, you know, his son happened to be there at the ballpark's that's a that's a tough one. But hey, he maybe finds new life. He goes to a very very good ball club in Baltimore. I mean, that's the club that should be going to the could as very good chance of going to the World Series. One of the best ball clubs in baseball. And so we'll see what happens for him.

Speaker 5: You know, it's interesting that you said that. You know, I think that they do have some real issues in the bullpen. I'm surprised that they didn't make a really heavy run at Tanner Scott With all the talent that they've had, they probably could have done like a one for one. I don't know if they wanted to give up you know, holiday for him, but they probably could have done a one for one for Tanner Scott to get it done. I mean, it's a steep price, and but the San Diego Pott, but they have a lot of talent. I mean, you know, Baltimore's got one of the deeper talent pools. I was just surprised that they didn't make a heavier run because they really do need bullpen help. And I'm wondering if at all, and I would assume that he'll start off in the rotation, if they think that Zach Efflin can pitch in the bullpen, because he did do it for the Phillies and that World Series run they made, and he ended up pitching quite well. He was I think he was closing towards the end, he and well he was, you know.

Speaker 3: Then he pitched the ninth then yeah, yeah, right, so when they you know, they clinched.

Speaker 5: And and and the clincher in Houston, right right, pitched that night. Yeah, And so I don't know if that's going to happen, but he has the ability to do that. I'm not sure if that's the plan for them, But you know, it was obvious that they wanted to make some runs at at some some starters, but they need some bullpen help that I think. I was surprised that they didn't try to really land a closure because they've I think that that that bullpen could leak a little oil.

Speaker 2: Yeah, but you know they got best of bes Now he's going to close for the fields, so they get that. I think that'll kind of settle some things in perhaps, but get Hoffman and Strom and kirk Ring and who am I missing.

Speaker 5: I do I do like the depth. I do like the depth of that that's been created now in that bullpen. I know it's you know, you got two in and two out. But I really do believe in the two guys that they got. I don't know Banks as well, but I really like a Stevens and I think he's going to be an excellent addition. And I think he's gonna give Rob Thompson another option in the ninth.
