“Just bad baseball:” Bryce Harper is frustrated following series finale

Those were Bryce Harper's words following Sunday's four to three loss to the Diamondbacks at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies lost another series. They can't seem to score. Ruben Tomorrow, Junior, Jim Salisbury, Todd Zeleck. It's Monday, April thirteenth, twenty twenty six. Guys, what do we think of Bryce Harper's assessment following Sunday's game. It was a notable. Anytime Bryce talks, it's notable. He's one of the biggest stars in baseball. His words matter, His words resonate good or bad or otherwise. Just bad baseball. Jim, would you, Jim, when you were in the you were in the clubhouse with me, What did you think in the moment?

Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that fourth inning play. It can't happen. It's a base hits, it's a leadoff hit up the middle. It's a chance to get.

Speaker 2: I know it does. And it can't. I've seen it. As soon as he came out of the box. I knew what he was doing because I've seen it. I've seen it for several years. But in a one run game, it's just period. You can't do that. It's reckless. And you had a chance for a lead off base hit down a run, and he said he was trying to get something gone because they hadn't done much. And it reminded me of a hockey player who wants to go out there and drop the gloves, except you know, it really backfired because he's out by five or six feet and if he's on first base, there you're actually starting something because the next batter, I think it was Marsh hits one off Gallon's leg. It rolls toward first base. Now you have one out and a man on second, so possibly something could have gotten going. So that was And he's been swinging the bat pretty well the last five or six games, very well. I think he's got a fifteen hundred ops, so there's a lot of good in there. He's starting to really come around with the bat. That's a big thing. But sometimes you have to be happy with a base hit up the middle. I know, you're trying to get more done, but that backfire. But you know, I do think the thing that he was referring to when he talked about bad baseball was the two first and thirds with no oles, especially the eighth thing that was so killer. Another base running blunder by Marsh that blew up in their face. That can't happen. Then you walk away with a difficult one run loss on a day when you made two pretty bad eras and one run can change everything.

Speaker 5: And I mean, my feeling is just that they haven't played well in any really phase of the game. There's nothing, no part of the phase of the game that's been you know, something that you would consider a plus. They've done some good things at times. They've had some good pitching at times. They've had some good bullpen work at times. It's nice to see that some of the guys are starting to hit the ball a little bit better, but generally an overall, they just I mean, the defense has been great at times and then spotty and shoddy at times, and that's the reason why they have the record they have, and that's the reason why they're losing baseball game. Situational hitting has been a problem for them for a while, and particularly in the playoffs, and that's why people have such great frustrat with this ball club. But in those situations, you have to drive in runs. It doesn't matter who the player is, it doesn't matter where who the situation arises to. Runs need to be scored. And and then you take the pressure off the bullpen, the starters, whoever, the you know, whatever the situation may be. When they don't do that and they don't add on, then it becomes really problematic.

Speaker 2: Yeah, you're right, I mean that that. I mentioned the marsh space running play, but that was only really part of what went wrong in the eighth inning. You know, Stot strikes out two really nasty breaking balls in off the plate from Gang go good pitches nonetheless, and then Garcia pops up and then it's compounded by the base running mistake. So really, for an inning that started off with great promise first and third, it ended with a just an absolute sod. I mean, the life went out of that ballpark, Phillies.

Speaker 1: I just want to run through some stats here just to kind of give you a big picture. Where they are batting average, they're batting two to twenty one as a team, that's twenty fifth in baseball. On base percentage three h seven, that's twenty second in baseball, slugging three sixty seven, sixteenth in baseball. It's hard to believe some teams are slugging worse ops six seventy four nineteenth in baseball runs. As of last night, they had scored fifty three runs all season, third lowest output in all the Major League Baseball. They're five through eight hitters are at MLB worst, have an MLB worst five forty two ops, so just overalls as an entire group, And you know, kind of going back to I was just curious, so I went back and looked at the Harper play and it was actually and follow me here for a second, it was actually one of his fastest home to second runs since the beginning of the twenty twenty five season. But but he doesn't run like he used to three, four, five years ago, as as talented of a hitter, as as Bryce has been and as he remains is we're going to talk about in a little bit. He's not running as well as he did. So maybe four or five years ago, maybe he gets there. But but now he's just not going to get there on a play like that, and so that maybe he needs to kind of recalibrate that aggressiveness on that ball, because, Jim, the explanation after the game was, you know, usually when I hit a ball right there, I've had a lot of success getting the second base. But you know, as you get older, you get slower, you know, so maybe you need to rethink that that theory that I can run on that that type of ball hit to that spot.

Betted five twenty six, ten for nineteen, four doubles, a home run, six RBIs, six walks, one strikeout All week fifteen hundred ops. And I did some nerdy deep diving this morning, guys. I got up early and because I was just curious because there's been so much talk.

Speaker 1: This past week, Chase rate twenty nine point one percent the week's leading up to that thirty nine point five percent, So he's chasing at fewer pitches out of the zone and this one, but this really popped out at me. It's even more impressive because this past week he only got pitches in the zone thirty one percent of the time. Wow, thirty one percent of the time the week's leading up to it forty seven percent. So in a week where he saw fewer pitches in the zone than he had at any point all season by far, he chased fewer pitches in the zone by far. So that is pretty elite.

It shows you that the theory talking to Kevin Long in spring training, you are your own protection, Bryan, you are your own protection. Go out there, don't chase that junk out of the zone. Be your own protection. And he's proving that you could literally have anybody hitting behind him and he can put up all star MVP type numbers. So Bryce Harper Slice of the pie.

Speaker 2: Certainly good numbers. I mean, his ops the last six games is over fifteen hundred. It's sitting five twenty six, so I can't quibble with that. I make give an honorable mention on the Maco Omico Best of the Week to Justin Crawford. He continues to make things happen. You know, he almost ignited a ninth inning rally the other night with two outs. He put some life in that ballpark, hit that ball top of the wall. And then in the only rally they had on Sunday, he started it off. They had four consecutive extra base hits and I think it was a sixth inning and he started it all off with a double Turner home run and swover and Harford double. So very impressive what Justin Crawford has done here. I think he's played fourteen games his first two weeks as a big leaguer.

Speaker 2: And they let that lead get away yesterday too, on top of all the other stuff that happened, he let that lead get away in the top of the eighth inning. The Diamondbacks just totally turned that game around in the with the help of the Phillies in the eighth inning.

Speaker 5: Well, I mean, it's not a great matchup for Alvarado just because he does not hold runners and that puts a lot of pressure on the defense and stuff. So, and it also puts pressure on him to have to throw strikes consistently. And it's been a little bit of a little bit of a slump as of lady needs to throw a little bit more consistent strikes.

Speaker 1: Okay, So the Phillies are going to open up a three game series on Monday night against the Cubs, and there's going to be a new lineup. There has to be a new lineup. Brandon Marsh hit clean up this weekend, and he hit cleanup because the Diamondbacks had no lefties in the bullpen. Well, the Cubs have lefties in the bullpen, and so Alec Bohm last week was dropped from fourth to seventh to eighth in the lineup. He's really struggling, as we all know. He's got a four to fifty six ops this season. And asked Rob Thompson, I think it was Saturday. You know you need a cleanup hitter. It's not going to be Boom. You have JT or Dolas Garcia, and Rob with a wink and the smile, said Dolan. Scarcia is a strong candidate to hit cleanup and maybe a few days ago that would have looked great, but Garcia is now in a slump. He's hitless in his last eleven at bats. You guys, any thoughts on the cleanup spot and he concerns about what's going on and now from four on down in this lineup.

Speaker 2: Yeah, they don't have one. They don't have one. And Garcia, Man, I just look at his hands. They look so tied up at his setup. They look tight and tense and just like rigid at his setup. What do you see when you look at that room.

Speaker 5: Yeah, I think he's just trying to not have as much movement. And you're you make a great observation because you're a great scout.

Speaker 5: The thing that the thing that that I see is that he's trying to concentrate so hard on not waggling his bat and tipping his barrel forward that it almost looks like there's no rhythm or no movement and no relaxation.

Speaker 5: So he's sort of caught in between, it seems, where he's trying to be steady with his barrel and yet still loose with your hands and free. Right, the best way to hit is when you're free your shoulders, your hands. You want to be nice and loose and relaxed. But you know what he might be, you know, thinking about that maybe too much, maybe just a little bit, just like everybody else in the lineup, trying to do too much, pressing to do well. Probably wants to impress and play well, especially in front of the fans. It's hitting season, the weather's coming out, it's going to be warm. Maybe it's time for these guys to start unleashing a little bit. You see some signs of them breaking out with Harper and others, but you know, they just have to be able to put runs on the board when runs are presented to them and when they have base runners on to not And I saw the quote from Trey Turner, maybe we're trying to do too much. And here it is. I think our lineup is great. We've got great players up and down. Sometimes I'm guilty of this too. You're trying to just too harden those situations. You know, it's kind of a freebie. All you have to do is hit a fly ball to center field to move a guy over. Sometimes it doesn't happen. I mean, these are the kinds of quotes that are, you know, cathartic in a lot of ways, like they have to face it and understand that, hey, you know, it's time for them to just go ahead and relax and play baseball and let their abilities take over. And when that starts to happen more consistently, this team will start playing better baseball.

Speaker 1: Yeah, they seem to be pressing. Just listen, in no doubt these little acknowledgments. You know, we don't want to, but you know, sometimes we're probably trying too hard. Well, it sounds like you're pressing, you know. Kyle Schwarber tried to you know, talked about that a little bit on on Saturday. Following Saturday's games. I think it was Tim Kelly said, how badly did you need a big inning like that on Saturday? He's like, well, I don't know if we badly needed because once you start badly needing some things, things basically get really bad on you. But I think they badly needed it, and I think they feel like they badly need it because again we've talked about this. They they know what everybody's saying outside the ballpark, and they also they also look up and see their numbers up on the scoreboard one lie, you know, five fifty ops, six fifty ops. They look and see those numbers on the scoreboard. They know what they're doing so and they know they're losing games that they should be winning, and they know they're not coming through in big spots, so I think it's only natural to kind of feel that pressure to come through. But I think they're also kind of going like, you know, let's trying to We're a talented group. We got to calm down here and try to come you know, just have a good at bat, pitch to pitch.

Speaker 2: And the offense. One of the real troubling things of the offense is the inability to sustain. You know, they'll have that one inning and then it's total shutdown for the rest of the game. Right, you know, you look at the last six games, they've only in four of them, they've only scored runs in one inning each time, and the other two they've been shut out. You know, you just can't throw up eight or nine zeros a night. And for the life of me, I don't think this team is going to do that over the long haul. I do think they're going to hit. But the question remains when.

Eight, they're eighth and Okay, I still remember a postgame quote back in the day when the Phillies were struggling and Chase Utley was asked about all the runners left on base. He said, well, if we're putting runners on base, eventually we're going to knock them in. You know, so you got to think that that is you got to think that that's going to happen. Just the law of averages.

I know that was it for me personally, that when I struggle with guys with runners on base, I started thinking, Hey, this guy's got to come to me, He's got to make a pitch to me to get me out, and not the other way around that I have to get a hit and this guy is going to you know, he's got the upper hand.

But I also think sometimes you got to apply a little stun gun to people, and a real lineup shake up like that where you put the kid one turn a two Harper, three Shore or four might be a little stun gun to wake some people up.
