That's the real concern here, AJS. How do you get yourself to a place where they can use their best weapons in the quarters, the semis and the finals.

I know, you got to win to get there. But then they also have Matthew Boyd who can start for you. Listen, they have Logan Webb who said he's pitching too, So Skeen's Web and Boyd. That's three pretty good options for any team, especially the USA, and you match them up who you think could be the best one in each situation and go from there. But I mean, can you imagine if it gets a semi final again and it's Skeens versus the Japan or Skeens versus dr or something like that. That'd be electric.

There's a ton of just really good energy around the clubhouse right now, and a lot of it is because all these guys are kind of in the same oh when it comes to their careers. They know they're going to be together for a long time, and to be able to step into that room and stand in front of them and know that you are the one that's going to help them grow, grow with them, but help them get to the point where we feel really good about showing up every day and what the vision is here is important, man. So like getting that done and communicating it to the players and staff was important for me, it was important for him, and I'm glad we were able to to get it to execute that.

It's a really unique situation because really doesn't work out this way, right Like new president comes in, manager gets fired, they bring in their own guy, and you go from there. What was a benefit was that he was with the organization for two years and we got to kind of build that relationship because at the end of the day, man, it all comes down to trust, and that's the most important thing for me, it's the most important thing for him, and we were able to build that over the last two years. So we've had some very direct and honest conversations and got to a point where we both were super aligned on kind of the vision, how we see player development, how we see the game, how we see the staff. It was just it all started to line up really, really well. So I'm glad that I get to stay here and be a part of actually building this to where we wanted to get to.

That's what I feel really strong about is the depth of our pitching. When you look at the rotation, there's something to get excpt about every day. You got bringing in May, there's real stuff coming out of that hand. You got Libby who's taken a real good step in the right direction in his career with Greevy Polante fits. You go down the list man of guys that have done a really nice job and then lay getting that opportunity to step into the starter rule and just show what he's capable of doing. We did that with Libby last year and it worked out really, really well. This guy has the pitches to do it, the demeanor to do at the confidence. So I'm looking forward to continuing to evaluate that. But there's there's more options, which is a good place to be.

Because I know for hitters it's like, whoa this dude four hundred, Well he was ripping you know, some first pitch heaters out of the ballpark. What do you need to see for pitchers or have you already seen like majority of what you need to see? And then it's just like I'll just wake make sure everybody's healthy and then make the decision.

Speaker 5: A lot of it is just coming down to health, making sure you can get close to the end and feel good about everybody's health. You're really evaluating how they come into spring. And the reality is, man, we've seen there's no surprises. We have a good idea of what we have and and kind of where this is uh gonna shape up. But I would like to get a couple of weeks further into camp before before we make those decisions or at least announced.

He's been like, for example, this guy's been working on his backhand and he comes into camp and baseball does what baseball does, it'll test you, and he makes two errors going to his backhand, and then talking to him, he's not sped up, just the way he's able to communicate what he was thinking, why it happened, what he's doing to correct it is above what you would normally have for his age. So I love his mentality, his competitive nature, the way he's going about camp, and the way he's responding to things not going his way at times, so and impressive. He's gonna help us win a lot of games for years to come, for sure.

Speaker 5: See when it comes to yeah, I'll say this about Vic and Mason. I think those two guys there's a big gap between where they're at and what the ceiling is, and I think both of them are going to close that gap pretty quickly. Even here and Mason talked through his approach this spring compared to a year ago is night and day man like, and he had he articulated it really well. He's like, man, I was just trying to hit homers and see how many I can hit. I need to be a guy that I can hit three hundred every year. I could drive the baseball when I picked my spots to leave the yard, but I can spray the ball over the field and find different ways to help us win. When you hear that coming out of his mouth, it gets you excited. So he's in the right mindset right now to be able to help us there. I think Vic is making some really good strides. And then Walker. This was the first offseason I felt like Walker was able to communicate with the level of maturity where it was I don't feel good doing this. Is there a different way of getting to the same end game and truly communicating with our hitting staff in order to get on the other side of this. There's a ton of talent there. I'm nowhere close to giving up on this kid. Is He is going to figure it out, and I'm committed to that. But we do feel good. I mean, Burley, you go down the list, we feel pretty good about where some of these guys are at.

Speaker 1: Hey, so do you feel as if there's going to be time for guys like that to really let it eat this year? And what I mean is they've got the lane right if they struggle for a few weeks or whatever it is, there's a lane here to say we're trying to put a fresh brand of Cardinal baseball together. There aren't as many veterans here. I don't want to say it's like depending on what spot you are in the season, but do you know what I'm saying where it's like, hey, I don't I don't see make or break either, but you need to just give some guys full pt as much as you can, right and be like, do we have something here?

Speaker 5: I think that's exactly what this is all about. And even if you think to last year, there were still some roadblocks there and you weren't able to fully do it. I think this year there is the ability and opportunity for these guys to take it and run with it, but also work through some struggles in real time and hopefully get on the other side of it. But when you look at our roster, there's definitely opportunity for everything that you just kind of describe.

Speaker 4: Are there enough veterans in a room? I mean, because it's a lot for coaches. You have a lot of coaches who have a lot of But are there enough veterans in the room in your opinion your experience through your cardinal's.

I think if you would ask me a year ago if you would have removed the veterans last year and had this group, I would have said no, I don't think some of these guys were ready to take that next step and be able to hold a clubhouse and hold people accountable and do it in a way that's actually impactful. I do feel much better about where that group's at. And I think by not having that big name, big voice that everyone looks to for everything in the clubhouse, it allows each and every one of them to kind of step into that role, some more than others. But I like the mix right now. A year ago, absolutely not, but I feel really good. I think even bringing in someone like Stanic Man, he does a really nice job of bringing that clubhouse together. And sometimes it's hard for a picture to do it for the position position players, but he does a really nice job of including everybody. So the mix is where I would want it to be right now. It really is.

And he's done a really nice job of being more vocal but when he speaks saying things that matter, like that are actually impactful and that hold the room to a higher standard. Stanic has done that as well. Libby is Stefin into that some girlson does it in his own way where he can have more one on one conversations. His personality lends himself well to that. So it's gonna be a collective of them kind of coming together and being able to do that. But because of where we're at and we're so like, I don't mind that. I don't mind a core of being able to kind of bring that whole room up rather than just one big veteran name. I'm okay with it.

But how do you how do you evaluate that based on the fact that you know he worked hard, but he still has to perform on the field.

He works so hard and if you sit him down and have a conversation with him and say, hey, here's where we're at, here's where we need to be, Like, this is a guy that's going to do everything possible to get there and from a movement standpoint, being able to do a combination of things of catch DH potentially play a little bit of first. We wanted to make sure that yes, the bats there, but that you could have a little bit more agility and be able to move. And he came in in really, really good shape. Man, He put in a ton of work. We love having him in that clubhouse for a lot of reasons, but this was a big part of his off season and he delivered.

AJ The Kansas City Royals signed up Starling Marte to a deal and it just happened this past weekend, last day of February, and Joel Sherman said he was a player they inquired a lot about last year when he was a Met Mets didn't end up trading him. But now he does land with the KC team that will maybe give him some playing time. I will say this, I mean I think he had three ind or something played appearances last year. He put together some decent at bats. I mean he was still an above average bat by ops plus you can get on base for give you a little pop. I know he's getting up there in age, but still can contribute here.

Speaker 2: Yeah. The worry with Marte has always been injuries, right the last few years has been injuries. Can he stay on the field. But if you look at their team, he's a nice He's a nice addition to the outfield that they need. You have Caglion probably in center and then the rest is kind of know where we at. But I think for the most part it's a nice edition of veteran presidents that'll give you solid right handed at bats.

You know, we don't know how what the numbers are here for money wise, but it gives a little bit of a veteran presence and he can pop you a few dingers every once in a while.

So they need a right handed bat somewhere to fill in and play wherever. Dh' mixing a DH every once in a while, and they's all be's catching and playing first or whatever, Vinny, you know. So they're they're left hand heavy. Him and Lane Thomas are going to be their probably right handed options off the bench.

So I've played a ton of second base in my past, but getting back to it might take a little bit of time, just from the game scenarios, just remembering how the ball looks over there.

But this is their first round pick, who's supposed to be a big deal for them, Remember, and the draft ended up dropping from one to seven, but the Cardinals felt like they got an absolute steal at that.

Find a shortstop, second basement, then you find your catcher, your center fielder. Boom you're cooking with. You're cooking with fire there, boys, and then you can get started on the pitching staff.
