I dropped my whole lass like cinema camera because I was because I was using
a skateboard as a dolly. Actually it's it's really funny. It's not funny
actually at all that but I have a leafy on skateboard in my room that
I'm never gonna use, and I had a big rug in the room that
allowed me to like basically, I was like, Oh, it'd be really
cool if I tried that, because I love that idea. Just throw the
tripod up, Beau. You see it from my tweet. Um, yeah,
I saw what happened and from the tweet. So you saw my tweet
about how I broke my camera and you were like, this is a good
let me try it. I was like, I won't do that. Can
I say that there's a lot of hair right now. There's a lot kind
of looks like you are the unofficial third member of the podcast you like moping
over the Specifically, you are wear a hat today because I was like,
I have to, I have to match their energy. Yeah I don't,
and I want yeah, I want to. I don't put my hair in
a ponytail on purpose. Sometimes, Oh I'm gonna be wearing a ponytail today
and hated it, so I didn't. It's I have the hardest time trying
to like tie up my hair. I see, like all these pictures on
the internet are like I go to a show or something and I'm like,
dang, I want that, and then I go do it and it's like,
oh, it looks like a two year old did my hay. I
don't think about it. It just goes up and I don't care what people.
Yeah, I do the same. If I have to put it up,
I just like bundle it up. I think. I just don't leave
the house when I do that. Yeah, that's it. Yeah. If
I'm not doing anything that day, I'm not touching this thing. If I'm
walking out and it has to go up, oh, my head's up like
a lot. Yeah. You don't want to like wear a beanie when you're
like head is dripping sweat. I guess because I do that often, like
oh it's a hat day today now instead, but I guess, Uh,
the gym, thank you, take care of it. Conditions. I've I
actually learned some new techniques this week from our writer Austin. She like her
mom is a hairstylist and was like you should do this with your hair in
this and it's like I should be actually taking notes, but I'm not even
kidding. Like she taught me to like flip your hair upside down and like
dry your roots and put this this ointment in your hair. And I just
learned at the ends. Yeah. Yeah, Kim literally told me yesterday.
She's like, when you wash your head, you wash it with hot water
a cold water. I'm like, well, hot water, I'm in the
shower. She's like, no, always do cold. I'm like whipping together
five years. You're now telling me that. I'm well, that's the crazy
thing. You've been washing our hair for at least twenty five years, and
like it's always been hot. I know, well, how many like men
wash their hair with two and one and every single day? You know?
Yeah, I think people just dumb three and one? What's the three?
Oh my? Then what's the two hair shampoo? Body body was just got.
It's like also toothpaste. Sure, oh my god, it looks it.
You're wearing a hat right now, Zion. We didn't like properly introduce
you high that's all right, we just introduce you as another guy with long
hair. I just remember that the cough in the boots and I guess I
just I blanked out. You're what do you do for Nintendo Life. It's
a weird. It's not a weird situation. It's just I'm in a unique
place where so Nintendo Life is based in the UK for the most part.
We have like a video producer in Denmark, and we have um, someone
that lives in Spain as well. And uh and but so I'm like essentially
like the only North American like full time employee that we have. I started
I think in twenty nineteen and I got hired on to just yeah, so
I work full time from home, like I tried at nine to five,
but you know, review and bargos and stuff to keep you up a little
later whatnot. But um, but yeah, that's that's my full time job
now is like adapting our written reviews into into videos, hosting discussions with our
coworkers, which I was terrified about back in the day. Like if you
asked me to do this like two or three years ago, I probably would
have wanted to say yes, but said no because I was too scared.
And um, but I like to go to events for the for the site
as well, and just like meet people and and and just you know,
talk shop and talk about the games that we love. So um yeah,
so so mostly my job is like yeah, adapting reviews, doing discussions,
putting out my own opinion pieces about things and uh, but it's all it's
my like my real job now as well, which is is nice to do
a lot of video essay stuff. Yeah, it's so I don't write a
lot of stuff like I'm I'm. I don't think it's unfair me to say
that I'm a terrible writer because everybody will be like nah, but it's writing
definitely doesn't just come to me. So it's more like sitting in front of
the camera and just talking about something. But but yeah, like having um,
having a focus of it, you know, like notes, I I
need notes or I will it will be a bad video. You do like
bullet points when you script out your videos? Yeah, I think I like
to. Obviously it's different for everybody. I would love to hear actually when
I do, I do like a full script. Yeah, I read chunks
of it at a time. Nice, But a lot of people do the
bullet points. It just flows. I do the chunks as well. Actually,
Um, and like I have a few co workers that, uh like,
bullet points are like absolutely fine for them, but yeah, my brain
like I can't. I'll I'll read a bullet point and then I'll try to
say something in it. Yeah, it just doesn't flow the way I want.
So I'll write it out like an article, and then I'll say it
in my own voice, and sometimes it changes and different. Okay, but
for the most part it's completely written. I think you don't write anything right.
It's a mixed bag. Yeah, I'm really good at just going with
it and just alto. I don't even need bullet points. I can just
do it. But it's never as polished or I think it was. He
laughed at me. I apologize. It's also it's ten o'clock in the morning.
It is the last thing we've all got. Uh yeah, but it's
never as like I don't think it's as entertaining or as like well spoken or
well written, because it's not, you know, I just did on top
of my head. There's there's more moments of improv which I like, but
than other. Half the time what I do is I write bullet points first
and then I turned those into a full script. I just feel like to
forget something if I don't fully see It depends how much I ask you,
It depends much I care about the thing I'm reviewing. Like sometimes you got
to get something out like that, and it's just easier just to But if
I'm like, if I have a point, like I said my Pokemon Scolet
and Violet review, I wanted to really get across why I didn't like it.
I didn't want to try improving that and then being like I should have
mentioned this and that to support my argument, so that all right. I
do a lot of technical stuff, so I feel like I have to,
like you, research it a little bit. I don't want to say that
you're a perfectionist because I don't know you that well, but I think you're
Your output on the Internet is very meticulous, and I so I can see,
Like, then why the bullet point or the actually like wanting to script
everything is important to you because like you you you want it seems like I
shouldn't speak for you guys great, but I guess it's not wrong. I
don't think I'm a perfectionist. I just I think I care about things that
other people usually don't. Sure, so I wouldn't say that the videos like
I wouldn't say. I I'm a perfectionist in the way where I'll like throw
something out if I don't like it, but I will spend a little more
time to make something a little I care more about things than most people wouldn't
necessarily care about. So this is the thing I want to see either of
you guys actually know about or if you ever catch this. But sometimes I'm
watching. Uh so I'm always editing videos like it's even if I'm I'm not
on camera. It's like gameplay at the very least for our video reviews.
Okay, so even if you're not in it, you're still working on it.
And so yeah, yeah, and uh it's it's I'm always working on
it if if I'm in it. Um, but but I might not always
be on camera, That's what I meant to say. But so, like
our video reviews are just always gameplay. No no on camera or anything like
that. But I it drives me bonkers when you see like a single frame
of a different scene like in a video game. I suppose of capture like
like with a trailer, like if you're cutting up a trailer to use for
something like that, and you're you're cutting clips together and you have like this
scene here and then you have the next scene, but then in between that
is just like the tiniest little sliver of like trailer cuts really fast exactly,
yeah, and you put it over the part you where you're talking or something,
and you have to have a cut so you make it fit perfectly,
and there's just a little sliver like slashes. Yeah, yeah, exactly like
that that flash or even like yeah, if if you say, if you
have two bits of yourself talking and you cut out a little bit of the
middle and you don't put the gameplay over that like little seam there. Like
it's those things that I I know that stuff takes time, but I feel
like I don't see you do that. But I also loved like the gent
the genuineness that like you put off as well. Like so I think there's
there's there's two really important factors there with like your content is very distinct,
but like they both have a place, you know, like like the scripting
versus the just going with it on the on the fly is us. They're
different vibes. It's a great start to the podcast. Just yes, yes,
I don't know, I mean this is the first time I've really like
gotten to know we haven't actually like had like a real com I met you
last night for like two right. I put my head on you actually last
night because you remember, Oh yeah, like I I think I hugged you
and then like, I'm a hugger. I just want to do that.
Yeah, okay, so that's good to hear because I didn't even ask.
I went to I'm a hugger too, but I went to shake your hand
when you walked in, and you like pulled me in for a dude.
I was like, I went doing this, Oh my gosh. But we
met at Pack's West for two seconds. Oh you're right, yeah, and
you were by the way you were like I never really talked with you before
online and watched your stuff and you were just the kind I just knew.
We followed each other, so I like took a gamble and I like just
stood from that point he was. That was the thing last night too,
was like I took because Austin, our writer who was with us last night,
we talked about this this morning or something or last night even she was
like, yeah, I saw you hugged him, Like what do you mean
You've never like really chatted with him before in person, like, and I
was like, I don't know, it just felt right and it's weird.
Yeah, yeah, exactly, Like you just get to know people online and
you feel like you have already met him in person, I think, And
yeah, we met him, well, I met Gerard the Completionist when was
that Friday for the first time. Really okay, and uh I hugged him
when he left. Yeah, but we talked him for like two I feel
like, yeah, we like spent the whole so after this, you'll feel
better about hugging me. Was what I'm trying to say. I mean,
I actually I already kissing Yeah, oh, I really am going to become
the third member. We met at Pack's West for the first time. You
do video content at these conventions. Yeah, that's kind of one of the
nice things about about Oh do you want to wait for the siren or does
that not matter? Just don't want to see what it is. I'm always
I always hear like people in podcasts like apologizing for sirens and stuff. So
it's yeah, we we shoot in a basement in Brooklyn and like most of
the time and like that, you'd hear in the in the small town Australian
and me, and every time I hear a siren, I'm like, what
is it? Who's getting gun today? I wanted to heart a gun shot
outside my apartment in Brooklyn and I stuck my whole head out. Who's died?
It was? It was like four in the morning. I was like,
that was definitely a gun shot. You didn't see like Mario or Luigi
in the street or something right, Like the cover just on the ground,
it's like a glove like coming ground. There's like a little number one next
to it or something. The police were super fast, a chalk outline of
cappy. Oh yeah, it's good. So yeah, what do you do
the conventions? Sure? So, I I think I have the benefit of
already loving to come to these things, Like I used to go to anime
conventions all the time before doing nintendal Life. I used to work in retail
too, so I just like love talking to people and obviously some people in
retail can get really burnt out on that. But what did you do?
So? I worked at game Stop from twenty when I was sixteen? Oh
you did do? Yeah? Did you wait? Did you work at a
game store? Actually? Though my wife did. Okay, I think you
right a game store yeah in Australia, did I know? Well, and
maybe I've just seen. I worked to retail my whole life, so I
did work in like a home depot adjacent Okay, but I think I'm thinking
back to you got you did a video where you went to game Stop.
I think at least I've been in the game store okay, and that's that's
probably once. I just that's I think it would. And I think of
game Stop apparently now. But I love game stuff. I often talk about
how much I actually appreciate game Stop people. I'm glad you do because I
think, yeah, some people working at game Stop, yeah yeah, when
were you there actually, uh two thousand and nine to like okay, yeah
maybe nice. I think I was there from O eight to eleven. The
upper management was like horrible, but my Matt direct manager, it was awesome.
So I got to do whatever the hell I wanted. Did you do
you really asking? Did you leave or did you not get fired? Or
so? I mean that happens at game Stop. Yeah. Like my manager
that I loved moved stores and I said, okay, then I quit,
but then she hired me back for like midnight releases and stuff. So I
like, cool, it worked like a little bit, and then I and
then I just stopped going that's nice like that I've I've heard in the through
the grape vine, even like my time there, that yeah, like some
employees get held on like if they if they if the stores really like them
a lot, you know, they'll pull them back for the you know,
the holidays and hiring new people is just always tough anyways, and yeah,
you go abe with them. Yeah, yeah, so that's good. I'm
glad. Like that was what made it really hard for me to leave game
Stop actually was the people, like I actually left in Yeah, I was
like twenty eleven or twelve, and I went to Target for like a week
because they paid more and it was like a I also worked at Target?
Did you really that was my first job? Okay, all right, well
we're just we're just the same person at this but um, but I went
to Target because I thought it would be better. Like I I went there
because I wanted something that was like, yeah, I wanted something where I
like could turn my brain off. Um, and then it was the worst.
Which I'm not saying that those jobs need to be there, but uh,
but it wasn't for me. So then I got lucky, and there's
this game store that it was called Johnny C. Cards. It was just
like this this shop that I used to go to as a kid in trade,
Like I sold an Exodia head there when I was a kid, and
I bought uh man, I guess I don't know any first things. I
bought Super Paper Mario there with the strategy guide like a long time ago.
And uh. But then eventually got to work there, like shortly after that
target stint, which I actually did, I basically got fired from that.
I didn't show up, so I'm happy to admit to that. But uh
but yeah, then I got lucky working at UM at JOHNNYC. Cards,
and I was there for like seven years, and we would do events as
well, Like I remember we did a Breath of the Wild like scavenger hunt
at UM an event when that had just come out. I mean the created
a list of all of Yeah. Yeah, I was there until I left
in like the first half of twenty nineteen, and then just like immediately did
Nintendo Life. But yeah, so I like what long story long. I
would always like to just go to events and and do fun things. So
Nintendo Life lets me do this. Uh and just you know, I still
like demo games and do hands on stuff and I'll try to do interviews like
I interviewed Gerard actually last night about his game Elsie that I did. I
tell us about it. I'm glad. I'm glad that that came up.
But yeah, so that's that's kind of I get to just go out and
um and uh and I like, I it's really taxing to go to events
like you guys have to know that. Um, but I know the fun
of it. You haven't been in a while, right, I've been terrified.
You were acting like this was your first one, but I know it
can't be first packs or first one, first like event with games that you
want to film. I think this was your first bigger one. I went.
I went to E three uh in like twenty before Birth of Wild came
out, because they had the Birth of the Wild Hut. And I made
it to the Birth of the Wild Hut and then I was like, I'm
not doing anything else, oh, because that was the only yeah, like
gaming event you've been to. Yeah, that was wow. And what I
mean by that is like when I went to E three, I did the
Breath of the Wild hut and then I went home because I was like like
that that was the year that it was just just Breath of the Wild booth
basically the Nintendo bro Yeah. Yeah, but yeah, the crowds they there
was too many people. Yeah. I would tried to go in. I
saw like a big mom Afia display. You know, Debela has that big
like retro movie theater. Mafia had like the same thing in twenty seventeen.
It was like a city set almost. Yeah, it was like a fully
it was really good. I remember getting to that, but everything else I
was like, I'm not fighting through these crowds. So I asking me like
about like uh like like like all these people are emailing me, like what
what do I just respond? Dude, I mean that's that's the first time.
That is my first time. Yeah. I had also going as like
somebody I had to like sneak in ether Nintendo sent me to E three.
Oh but back when they did stuff. Yeah, oh we can talk about
that, sure, mister Nintendo. Okay, well, and that's I would
like to sec set the record straight as well. Are you in the same
ambassador right now? No? No, so Nintendo, and we're not even
not owned by Nintendo. Nintendo was nostake in us. We still if they
make a bad game, we're going to tell people that we think that.
Um we do. We have done one or two sponsored videos with them before,
but they're always marked as that there's no there's no money that comes from
like I wish, but uh yeah, so we're not actually connected to Nintendo,
even though my I think my grandpa is the one that still thinks like
I work at Nintendo. He's a very sweet person. He's missing the last
part, the life part, yeah, with Nintendo. Yeah, but but
I mean even people would probably just think that about like I guess Brandon massadors
too, like that there there are stakes or something in there as well.
So yeah, I dropped a lot of the comments where like like a lot
of the comments where finally now he can give us his honest opinions on Nintendo
games. And I was like, yeah, everything's gonna change, guys.
Yeah have you you so you write reviews a lot, I don't actually don't
you just adapt them? Yeah, And it's it's mostly because we already have
like I'm not, like I said earlier, actually I'm glad you touched on
that, because I'm I'm not a great writer, at least I'm not a
quick writer, and so it's a lot more efficient for somebody else to play
it, and because it takes a long time, you know, like I've
heard you like vent about that as well. It's just like you get a
hold a week before, um, and there's better cases than that, but
you don't get a lot of time to play a game and then having to
to script it and then I think it. Um, it depends on the
scenario. So you know, there's what must be nice. Well, sometimes
it's earlier than that. Uh, like I reviewed me well, but it's
uh, it's a tricky situation to be in, you know, because then
you have this responsibility that it has to get done and everything. So um,
so I don't often write the reviews because we just have people that are
already better at that and quicker. So then I'll take that often and yeah,
narrate it. Sometimes at the end I'll put my own reviews because if
we're lucky, we'll get two codes, so then um, then I can
play the game and get specific capture footage, you know, like I'll I'll
take some really nice like panning b roll shots and get the get the things
that are important to the video. And then and then the person reviewing doesn't
actually have to like stress out about like oh crap, like the capture software
shut offers. They're like, well, it didn't work while I was while
I was playing, and they just get to focus on the actual review itself.
So it's a really like I'm it's a very fortunate situation I think to
be in. Does it just it works out? Um? But yeah,
I don't. I reviewed Neo The World Ends with you in like twenty I
don't even know what is time anymore would have been like okay, so I
did that, and I think it took me. It was like a forty
hour game, and I think I had code for two weeks on that and
I like procrastinated, so then I had to play the game like crazy,
like the week week week or the week before, and what I say had
to By the way that, I'm also in a good position where like our
editor or any of our writers are not like, hey man, are you
going to have that review done? It's like that responsibility is kind of what
I think I feel, and probably others in the industry feel too to just
try to have it out on time and um, and also the embargoes make
it so that way, like if you don't have it out on time,
then everybody else maybe does and then they get views instead. So it's like
a it's a I guess that's an important kind of like race top. Yeah.
Yeah, so yeah, So I don't write a lot of reviews just
because of the effort I think or the time commitment. When Zeno Blade three
came out, it's a very long game, and it was very important to
me that I wanted to make a review in that game, and so I
I killed myself finishing that game, like to the point where I was getting
like, yeah, yeah, I'm okay. I was getting like super depressed
like a week or two in because like all I was doing is playing this
game. I wasn't sleeping, I wasn't going outside Like this was during like
I was trying to work on my mental health. But I was also trying
to rush through this game to like finish it as soon as possible. And
it still took me like two or three weeks to get through all of it.
It's such a big game. Yeah, and then a hundred hour over
one hundred hours, and then I started writing the review and that took me
days to finally get down. And then by the time that was all done,
I shot the review even and then I sat down to edit it and
I was like, it's almost been a month, I'm exhausted, and I
just couldn't bring myself to edit it. So I just scrapped it and moved
on to the next thing. We I mean, you have a very outside
looking in like as somebody who has watched your stuff, I feel like you
have a really passionate fan base that because of how genuine you are, I
feel like people just want to hear what they say. Absolutely would have still
gone off if I had made the video of people would have been there,
but I was you know, I got it on launch day. I was
pushing myself to try and beat algorithms, and I probably didn't have to.
I could have taken longer, could have taken a couple months, but I
tried to. I tried to be quick with it, and it just killed
my motivation to even look at me talking about the game, which is a
shame because I loved the game and I was really excited to talk about it.
But even getting like a little bit of a headstart would have been nice
and I wouldn't have felt so stressed. Sure, but in that scenario,
I definitely see what you mean because you knew you were going to do the
review right like that you told yourself that it sounds like and so having that
extra time in the case is important because I think it's it's nice to not
it's nice to not know that you have to do every like like it like
if you get code early, it almost feels like a like we're we're gonna
we're gonna review every Nintendo game, Like that's that's just what we're gonna do
because we're an Inintendo life and like that's that's what we do. But um,
but I think if you were in an individual and you were trying to
like, you know, keep that rapport up or something like maybe uh,
maybe you would like really burn yourself out if you I mean, obviously you've
already, like you said, you already burned yourself. I just know,
if I think if if I was just like doing a solo thing or you
know, or with a bud uh and I had to do a review of
every single like game that came out, essentially and I got quote early.
I would feel that obligation and I would be I think I'd just be very
tired all the time. You actually really care about Yeah, I'm not saying
you're go, but um, there's just always I guess two sides of the
coin. But I'm I'm yeah, that sucks that you like had that scenario.
Okay, it's just like, yeah, yeah, it would have done
well anyway, but there's still a window of hype where it would have done
better. And I was just trying to hit that window, and I messed
up. I don't think I've ever scrapped a video. I don't know if
I could do that. I put things off for like a long time,
but if I start filming it, I feel obligated to finish. I was
was so defeated by it and tired that I knew if I finished it,
I would have had a horrible time and the video would have sucked. I
was sort of rushed it. I think I'm just incredibly stubborn, I think,
but I like part of me, part of me wants to be like,
dang, like you scrapped it, like after all that time, but
like, well does that Kevin Kenson he will start a video, he will
delete a video, he will upload it. If it doesn't do good,
he just immediately do. Another reason why I scrapped it is because by the
time I was done, I can't remember what game it was, but the
next Nintendo game came out, No, because it might it was like Kirby
maybe forgotten, I don't know. Bayonetta was in October and Zena Blade was
that like September or August maybe something something pretty much in October Drop to Night.
Oh yeah, Splatoon was September actually, sat Yeah, that was the
one I moved to that video. I was like, I'm gonna it made
more sense that game had just come out as I was like trying to edit
Zano Blade, and it made more sense for me to make a Splatoon review,
which I could do in a few days, then sit here for another
two weeks making a Zeno Blade video and miss Splatoon. Now I've missed two
games. Yeah, so I just moved on. And then it was end
of the year and the end of the year gets crazy. Yeah, yeah,
exactly. I will say I don't think the like review process with all
these like companies, like with embargoes, is the perfect like it's not the
win, you know. I don't. I don't think it's like you know,
back like when we would read magazines or go on uh, I don't
know, watch TV shows about games or whatever. I don't think, uh,
there were the rules that like everybody had to have this out at that
certain time or anything. I think there's there, you know, there's there's
pros and cons to it, because then you know, maybe they they set
all these rules in place, and then they I think there's people time to
work on the thing. You're right, and then you don't have like a
half baked thing hopefully coming out as well, because then, um, it's
not like a it's not a race to put it out first. Everybody should
be getting I think the embargos there so everyone puts that Nintendo time did they
used to give people a long time to make stuff, you know? And
and when when did they start to just give people games like after release Nintendo?
Yeah, during the three D thirty s kind of ending era. The
last one I got was months to Hunter Stories on three DS. That's when
I got something like a day or two early. And then after that it
was nothing like Minecraft Dungeons. I got the day after the game. That's
interesting because that's even still just like mo I feel like I'm gonna say it
wrong. It's just Mojang, isn't it is that? Yeah, it went
through Gland, though I don't know. That was the last thing I got
through Gallaland, and it was the day after the game. I will,
I will say a lot of bigger come when he's do that. A lot
of bigger companies will give the game or a code the day it releases,
which is useless. Use you can buy it, yeah, yeah, or
after. Not only is it useless, but then there's an obligation when you
can just buy it the same day. Yeah. I can't stand when they
give you like a sheet of like rules and then they give you the game
the day of, or with like with Mind Trap, Minecraft Dungeons, I
had ended up buying it on day one, and then I'd already said yes
to the code weeks beforehand. I got to the day after and I told
them explicitly email, I don't want this anymore, because my obligation then is
to put hashtag free game on every single thing I make. And they would
have made sure I did that, but I bought it. I don't want
this code, take it back. Yeah, which sucks. You know,
Nintendo's given me a code and I'm like, I don't want it. Probably
don't have to put hashtag free product in your reviews. We don't. I
don't know, you know, I'm I'm just a guy who makes videos.
I don't know all the specifics, but I do know on the website,
we uh, we source or we credit rather whoever we got the code from,
and then we try to put that in our videos or video reviews too,
just as well for that transparency. But I definitely forget sometimes because it's
not like templated into our description, you know, right when we start up.
But um, but yeah, I think it's it's a it's we we
do. You know, we get lots of free code too, but we'll
still you know, like buy stuff and then just talk about it ourselves as
well if if we really love it, like yeah, I remember I remember
buying Uh oh my gosh, what's a ever everhood? Have you guys heard
about that game on Switch? It's like this weird like undertail style um RPG
that is like it uses almost like a guitar hero like highway like battle system
where like you're dodging things left and right. Yeah, yeah, it's it's
really not as Guitar Hero as I think I thought in the end, but
that was where my head was first at. But yeah, I bought that
game, and then I loved it so much and wanted people to hear about
it. So then I, um, then I did like in my own
video about it, and I actually reached out to the des too and was
like, hey, I did this video, would you guys send us more
codes so I could just like share them with our team or something like that,
and they actually didn't. It was really really nice. Um but uh
yeah, we try to be transparent with that, but we were not forced
into I don't think, um specifying. But maybe it's because we're like a
news outlet. I don't know. I don't know the specifications with that.
I have the same thing because when I was doing all that stuff, we
would get media stuff, not like content creator stuff. So we used to
get the game like a couple days before. But they never said you have
to put free game or no. There there's no if you just get a
code, there's no obligation to because you're not getting it's not sponsored, you're
not getting paid there's no legality there. Like when I do my shop videos,
most of the time I've bought my games myself, like the ten e
shop games nice, but very often I'll get codes like one or two might
be a code I was given, but like I don't want to be like
I don't I don't tell people in the video this is one I got the
code for, because I don't want them to think that it's in there because
I got a code, or that I'm saying something or promote it differently because
they're in that because I love them and I would have bought them regardless.
So you're probably in a tricky situation too there where like if you if you
reach out to a dev and say like, hey, um, I'm interested
in this game, I would potentially like to cover it. Can you send
me code? And then you maybe you get it, and then maybe you
don't actually want to put it in the video now because that happening or another
and then you feel bad because they they took one code out of their limited
pool codes to send you, and um, it's a yeah, I realized
we just keep I'm so sorry that if we just keep talking about like we're
talking shop stuff on no, I think a lot of people don't know how
this stuff works. Do you ever use sides like keymailer or I might not
have I think is keymailer, so I actually I don't know. I use
keymailer and terminals a lot. There's these sides have before, but I kind
of stuff where there's like a bunch of that put that games up there and
you can request codes. But something I like about it is you can select
how likely you are to review the code, so it's like one very likely
likely, maybe not likely. And no, I don't know why anyone would
hit no when they're trying to get a code, but I always you're just
being completely high. Yes, I always just say maybe because like, I
gotta play it first. And I love that though, because if you then
decide to accept my request and give me a code, you know I've said
maybe. But I only request if I'm looking at something like, oh,
this looks fun. I'm not just like rapid firing codes because I don't want
to take them from indie teams for nothing. I think the disclosure thing is
a little complicated because, like I genuinely just don't care if I get a
free game versus if I have to pay for it because it's just the nature
of the business. It's you know, yeah, I'm the same. That's
why I don't say anything. It doesn't affect me at all. Like I'm
gonna gas someone up for a ten dollars. My job is like, and
I'm gonna make money off of the video, so like it's spending point dollars
on an indie game is fine, Like I appreciate the code so much,
but my integrity versus like fourteen nine, Yeah, yeah, it doesn't change.
Maybe that's part of it too, with like, you know, I'm
always surprised by like because we work with a lot of freelancers on the website
and we have our own like writers that are work full time jobs with us
as well. But but we're just like reviewing stuff all the time. And
so maybe that's part of why we don't have to just close. I don't
know, or maybe we do. It just doesn't legally have to. So
it just depends whether or not you want to, like if it pertains to
your review in any way. Like I've seen people say, like this game
maybe wasn't the most filled with content, but then I it's a six dollar
game, and I didn't pay for I got a review code for it.
So maybe my opinion is a little skewed here. And I've seen that enter
reviews of people trying to justify maybe their experience playing it was different because they
got to review copy. But again in my case, in our case,
probably it's mostly just indies, and it's like a ten dollar difference, and
we wouldn't be talking about it if it wasn't fun. We're not forced to
talk about any game in particular. We're not trying to do everything. Yeah,
Also, like about getting games early, I sometimes maybe someone will offer
me a game, but it'll be like the day of releases, and I
know I can go to like a mom and pop shop like two days before
that, like break Street days. So I've always heard I'm so glad that,
like I shouldn't say, but that's cool that you have done that,
because I remember when like street Fighter five, or maybe it was just even
like an updated Street Fighter four, No, it's five. When street Fighter
five came out, we were playing a lot of fighting games at the game
store that I worked at, and there was a local game store in town
that uh, one of my friends was like so certain that they would break
Street Day for him and they didn't. Okay, but but you know,
I remember hearing about like I think seven eleven so was selling Gears of Wars,
not care about Street Days. Yeah, yeah, seven eleven eleven had
games exactly. I'm so glad no idea how to sell games because they would
just put them out when they got them, so you'd go just a convenience
store of seven eleven, they'd have games. Wow, that's why I can't
imagine that, right, they sound like all the time. Yeah, oh
yeah, they were like in the front. Oh my god. Yeah,
that's just they're only buy the magazines. Yeah, like no glass. Yeah,
it's not like even if they were in like those um you know those
like magnetic locking cases or something like that. Like seven elevens are so tiny,
like the doors are right there, like you just you run out the
door and you're like you're already gone. As I'm not telling nobody should do
that. No one's checking either, because everything they've got is like dollar long
dollars, snakers, like they're not they don't care. Can you imagine like
going to get gas and like I don't know, you're let's say your partner
goes in to get a snack and they come out with like Halo the Master
Chief Collection or something like that, Like, what what is that? Come
down tomorrow? But I got it. You want to go home now and
just play. I want to talk about We wanted to kind of make this
about the three DS, and we ended up spending a half an hour.
Can you move that? Actually, just I'm so sorry. It's like right
in the position of the camera I look over at it's nice perfect. Oh
yeah, So you want to talk about packs? Yeah, packs, And
I want to talk about the whole, the whole. You have this big
campaign that you started earlier this year. It's very sweet of you to call
it that because that makes me feel very I mean very it is I had
my three Yes, ready, I suppose you're right in that sense. You
uploaded was was it January first? Okay? All right, yes, all
right, the kid on the train with the loud music? Uh that happened?
Yes, you uploaded, yeah, in the beginning of the year,
and you said this year you're gonna make a point. You started a fresh
DS. Yeah. Uh, and you're gonna go on a journey to try
to guess you're gonna keep it with you all the time. You're gonna see
how many street pass you get. Yeah, so you're you're one hundred percent
right, All of that is factual. I think last year I went to
London to go visit like some of our co workers, and I got to
meet John Cartwright who used to do videos with us, and he's like one
of my best friends. I love that man so much. And we we
had this idea to like, just, yes, see what it would be
like to try to street pass in the modern age, because you know,
the switches the dominant antendo platform now and and the switch doesn't have street pass
and I don't understand why, but but so we we took ours. I
agree, like that was I haven't tested it, but that was a thought,
right, like what do we want to explain with street passes or is
that redundant? Oh? Probably should Yeah, so because some people probably never
had a three D. Yes, yes, I haven't. I have to
make a street pass. You. I haven't opened this since so when I
first opened it, knowing I was going to do this, Uh, I
saw the Mario maker guy I forgot his name. He came up at promotions
with gold pansy time, because you get one every day. Yeah, oh
really, Yeah, Okay, I haven't gotten you yet, which is what
I don't really want to do that. Okay, I'm gonna have to get
to work. Then I have like a bunch of tags already on. I
have ninety seven tags waiting for me, right, Oh my god. Um,
yeah, I know it's gonna be I'm I'm sorry if I don't play
the fishing mini game in the Garden one yet. I'm just to do the
puzzle pieces in the dungeon. But oh, I got him. I changed
my I put a rupee on my head today to actually instead, I was
wearing the donkey conging out for yesterday. Make sure that camera's in focus too.
Okay, So, so did you want to give this feeling? So
I want to say, when I first opened this up, knowing he was
gonna be doing this, I got the gold pants Mario Maker guy, And
that means I haven't opened this thing since Mario Maker on the three DS,
which is twenty sure. Yeah, so that's how long it's been I've even
touched Yeah, I guess street Pass. I mean I've touched the three DS
since then. I'm glad. Then it was like still there as well,
Yeah, that's he was waiting at the gate for how many years? So
my wait, I think you you DMed me about that. Actually, I
think we basically what I mean, he's been here waiting, ye, just
like I mean, honestly, that's a digital that's an AI in there.
He has feelings. We just don't know. We don't know how much.
He only gets to tell you one sentence and it's if he likes dogs or
cats and then so yeah, what street Pass? Sure? So street Pass
is a feature exclusive to three DS and two DS. As obviously we're we're
showing here where uh there's um, there are different games that can use this
as well. It's not just this street pass me plaza that we've seen,
but it's basically the ability to uh send data within I think like a sixty
foot radius. And so the way the three DS uses that is with street
Pass, and it allows you to trade your like me characters with each other
in this big plaza, right and collect them for for use in different mini
games. I think it's just a really like social element that you know,
we already have different ways to play games and stuff with each other, but
it, uh, it just allowed you to incentivized you to bring out your
system and uh and and and play it with friends and it's all automatic exactly
Like you could just be walking around with you three DS in your pocket,
a little green light goes on. Asleep, Yeah, asleep because you you
could be in the middle of New York City. You walk past someone who
has theirs in their pocket and they'll just without even knowing it. Yeah,
both green lights go off. You go home later and someone knew was on
your three DS. Yeah. When I when I got a three DS,
I was working in the city, so traveling into the city every day,
I had this thing and I was I was freaking ranking up street. That's
really cool. Awesome, that's really cool. And then everyone that comes in
tells you a little something about them because you set it up beforehand, so
you get their name, you get a little you get where they're from,
unlocks as a region. So because my I got this sent to me by
Nintendo. Actually one of the last things I sent in Canada. This is
an that's a more expensive system three it is, but I was pinging everybody's
Canada region last night, unlocking British Columbia for people. That's sweet. Did
you welcome? Did you get how Kaido last night? I did. That's
so cool. I have a Roman place I like to go to. It's
cool hu Kaido or you have been to? Okay, we'll have to talk
Japan, like maybe later or something, because I haven't been to actual Japan
too, but I haven't been. I've been an actual Hakaido, have you?
No? No? No? Still, hey, that's it's good to
have goals, you know, it is good. I just want going in
April, are you really no? Yeah, we're trying to go later in
the year. Well, well good, please do that, please do this?
Um oh yeah, so and so street pass Uh. It's not even
invasive either, right like about the information it gives out, You're You're totally
right like it. It tells a little bit about you, and it just
gives you personality and flavor. So as you're walking around, these people will
come and it goes to your like plaza gate, and they all just line
up. It's clunky because you have to sit through all of them and you
can hold our to like to like speed them up. But the fun is
reading when they're from and what they know. The fun is collecting thousands of
street passes. Give me all you have eleven yeah, from back then.
I haven't touched it in like, guess how many I got last night?
How many did you get? Actually starting fresh, I said guess oh,
and I just said no, tell me um fresh account. I had no
one before the meat up, just the meat oh oh for the meet up
oh um. And we were there for like ten minutes. By the way,
did you get like thirty fifty three? Really that there was one person
we met who had nineties amazing from then from ye last night she got wow
yeah, and she was there for the amount of time we were there.
Yeah. Yeah. So you we we've been jumping all over the place.
You started this whole campaign saying that you're gonna bring the street passion out,
and then here we are at packs and you decided you were gonna have a
little meet up, and the little meet up turned into a kind of a
massive meet up. Yeah. And honestly, the great thing about this too
is like, you know, I'm glad that you touched on the fact that,
yeah, I made this the original video about street pass You're absolutely the
reason that people brought their their ds the three D because I've I remember when
this thing died, like when like somewhere around like twenty sixteen ish, like
going to conventions. Nobody's didn't no green light. It's not like a nice
time. But it's you know, the shop's going down right now as well.
So I think I always tell myself like, oh, it's not that,
it's just it's just people are just nostalgic for it. But it's really
something. It's back around. Yeah, that's true. Yeah, it came
back around. It was dead for a little bit. Now that because the
E shop's dying and because you made the video to bring the three D s
is around, Yeah, you revitalized it. And it's nice because like that
was that was like so I did that video with John in London, you
know, and we we basically didn't I think we we didn't find oh yeah,
we didn't find a single street pass in I think we went to like,
no, not Cambridge, U I'm gonna butcher the locations, but we
were in London itself, and we we went on. We went to a
bunch of different games stores even I think we went to like four or five
game stores and hopes that we would trigger a street pass and we found like
three ds is in the glass case and none of them were turned on,
of course, but we didn't find one until I found one on the train
ride home. Crazy enough, but I found one, and it was like
I remember the days as well of like going to anime conventions and like and
walking around with my buddy arrand we would like go up and down the hallways
of the hotel that we were staying at and hopes that like people would have
the three DS is charging or turned on and we could grind and get those
extra puzzle pieces. And I remember even when I was at game stop and
UM and UH and the local game store I was at, we would bring
our three D s is into just you know, just share that experience with
our customers. And it was such a social thing that, you know,
like I said, you just don't have it on switch that I I think
I wanted to try to. I want to be able to tell people like
what's worth bringing your three DS and two d S two and and how how
can you really get one? Because I was sure that John and I were
gonna, like, I mean, we got each other, you know,
but that was that was for certain. But I was certain that we would
find maybe one or two. And even in airports, I always think like
somebody has to be playing. You were saying that you barely got any until
this pack. You said most of the people you were getting were just friends.
I think you said into how many in total since you started this?
I think that's a good point. I have no um, I think I
was at so yeah, I'll spell it out. So from January to February
and then I think a bit of March, I had gotten eight different street
passes. Um, I think I had fourteen tags total. But since,
like you were saying, you can you can tag people multiple times if it's
different days, and then in the games that you can play, like your
character's level will raise or like they'll be able to do more for you the
more you meet them, which is nice and UM. So yeah, I
think I had eight unique people, but more than half of them were just
friends that I met up with. Like, I flew back to Wisconsin to
visit family in January for the holidays, and I had asked like a couple
of my close friends, like hey, can you bring your three DS out
or and whatnot. One of my friends Zach actually like set up three three
ds is when I got to his house for me. So those eight were,
Um, you know, I was going I went to Super Nintendo World
M for an event. It was like before the grand opening, and I
got two that day. And I'm not saying that that's like that's the grand
opening. There were a billion people there right right, and it was a
lot of like you know, uh, content creators and stuff too. So
I think, like, you know, it's not the diehard Nintendo fan.
I mean it is, but it's you know, they're not the people who
had a lot of press people. Yeah, sure, yeah, yeah,
it's it's it wasn't necessarily like right, like people wearing Mario hats and like,
um and yeah, like playing Mario Maker on three DS still or something
right like uh but um yeah, you get uh. It has its own
mini games that you use the people that come to your plaza and you use
them in the mini games. You get like puzzle pieces from them stuff.
But also certain games on the three DS use the street pass. So if
that person you like, select which game you want to be absolutely right to
your guy, Yeah, like when you when you first boot up a game,
I think it'll ask you if you want street pass functionality turned on if
it has it, So like legend Zelda Link between Worlds I think has a
the ability to fight someone's like shadow Shadow Link or Dark Link, and then
like MARYR three d Land, I think has the ability to like play a
little like a puzzle like a cube room or like a coint a question block
or something and a and you just get like extra items or something from it.
But yeah, a lot of games like had extra things. I think
even Fire Moment Awakening allowed you to battle the party of whoever you Street passed.
Yeah, and you just don't have that at all these days, like
with the Switch, Like I mean you have like a DS download Play was
a massive thing on the system, and I know that's way different than the
Street Pass, but the Switch just doesn't really have a lot of that.
In my opinion, it doesn't have a lot of that community aspect now of
coming together. And I think that's after doing that that thing last year with
John. I really thought about it a lot, and it was just a
random idea that I like, I just missed this and I want to talk
about it. And having these platforms to speak about this stuff that we really
care about is so nice. So I mean, I mean it's a double
edged sword because Nintendo developed a lot of cool unique things with this that involved
the wireless stuff, and with the Switch, they didn't develop anything for their
online service. It's like not like at all. You know, the reasons
and stuff, and you probably Funky has held to like this isn't exactly a
fleshed out online experience, you know. Sure they did all their things in
their own little unique Nintendo. Yeah, so the Switch, I mean the
Switch at least I think they're trying to get a little more towards the modern
age, like having like a friends list. Wow, that's a good point
concept. I wish we could sort our friends list on Switch. That would
be or like add nicknames. Maybe even the one game I really love the
street Pass. It was a game called Bravely Defaults. It's an offshoot of
Final Fantasy UM and in the first beginning moments, the character you playoffs has
like a fun little life in a town and they just nuked the town and
the street pass functionality. Everyone that passes by you is coming to like rebuild
the town and building the town up, and like you see all your like
little villagers. You have to equip them with like auto battling stuff, because
like they'll battle shit well, like they're gone in a way. You'll also
like crossover people if I think if I think this part is only if they've
played the game, like you get to copy their like ultimate move and deal
like insane. Damnag, that's sweet. Street pass people look like Bravely defailt
characters or where they will meet in the game. They I think they were
nondescript, like little PNGs of Final Fantasy Village people. I don't think.
Okay, okay, I don't think they were means, don't I get you
remember it, but I remember always like loving that like aspect of building my
town with like the people I met in high school, and I always gave
the bad jobs to the bullies that like I'm like, you're shoveling. That
was like your instead of like crossing people out in a yearbook, you were
like putting them into jobs like slave labor down. But I'm glad you asked
about the different avatars too, because like, did you ever play Animal Crossing,
New leafund three games either so that had street pass functionality where if I
could be wrong in this, um so correct me please m too. But
isn't it that you when you street pass with somebody you get like a copy
of their house like up above in this kind of area, and you can
go up and why you can like buy it. You see like a full
copy of their house, and you can go and buy items from them,
and you never see their avatar, but you do get that level of personalization
still from that, is the switch not capable of this street pass technology?
Why would maybe I should send an email. I don't know what exactly about
the wireless it's using. It must just be the because this is something that
like kind of makes me. If your friends have a three DS and they're
like street passing each other at the time, you kind of want to get
in on it. It's one of those really simple, easy to implement things
that would make a switch. Just you know, all my friends have a
switch, they keep street passing playing games together. The switch could even do
it through bluetoo. I keep playing Animal Crossing, my friends up playing,
and they're like straight passing each other's home. Like it makes you want to
get a switch. I think it's legitimately the battery, because I mean,
this battery is kind of insane. It lasts a really long time when it's
street passing, not so much like like I got down to I think a
third. But the switch is kind of always asleep, isn't it, because
you never hard tone it off, you know, it's always resting. Yeah,
but then it's gonna be working the wireless like like a lot. I
am always surprised though with like if you, you know, put the switch
aside for like a week and don't use it, you're right, like,
there's always I think it can at least mind, if you have the street
pass on, this will die within a couple of days. Well to sleep,
But if you don't have the street past functionality, it will stay on
for maybe even that years an option not on on, but then that's an
option. When we turned mine on, we were doing all the e shop
stuff. It, I haven't charged this in literally years. Well that was
that wasn't asleep, that was off off. But yeah, the batteries on
on, yes, are insane. They last. I don't know if that
would be that I actually did want to. I think I was probably like
inadvertently inspired by like the fact that you did the you've been doing. Maybe
you still are. I'm stumbling with that, but yeah, yeah, exactly,
And I wanted to like set up two systems side by side and have
one with but I want to use the exact same model systems and have one
with street pass or wireless functionality turned off and one not and see really like
what the what the difference is? But I just keep forgetting or like I
have to be home to like make sure like I'm it's like I'm monitoring a
monitoring a baby because it's like all if it turns off, like I have
to be watching it or I have to turn a camera on or something and
let it roll. I don't know, but are there public spaces we can
plant three ds so people can go like a pocus I sold last night?
I was thinking about like when packs West happens and then when paxsyst happens again,
Like yeah, what if we like just got because I mean, oh
my three my two DS is dying by the way, Actually I think I
have a charger in my back. Do you guys have charges with you?
I actually didn't bring one because I don't have one. We'll figure it out,
don't worry, um, But I do think it'd be so cool too.
Yeah, like grab a couple of our three ds is make like a
really fun me on them and a caption and then like you could even like
make them me say things like this is this is stop one? Oh,
this is stop five. That's a good point. Yeah yeah yeah, and
you gotta go around packs and whoever it hits them all first win something.
Sure, Sure, that would actually be pretty fun. I'm really glad I
would again. I love where your heads at. Oh did you get me?
Okay? Cool? Cool? Good? That means I got you too,
then, which is yeah nice, So like obviously eyed, okay,
that is how it works. You never have to worry aboud. And you
could like because when because Bob's really vain, I got this idea from Bob
just now. When his thing comes up, it says, uh twish dot
TV forward slash wolf down, subscribe today. I mean I did. I
did that exact saying yeah, you as you should. But you could put
you could put like websites and stuff like, and then it would link to
clues for where the next one is, Like if you want a clue for
the next stop, you know, I even I wouldn't be like if people
I don't know how you guys feel about it, but if people just want
to like take this idea and please like do it like, that's the whole
point of the street pass campaign. We'll do it cool, We'll do it
cool y. Yeah, you should do it. Do it at packs next
year. Yeah, okay, you could just you could just talk with you
guys if you want it, we can figure something out. You can get
all the three ds is ready to go beforehand and then just plant them when
you walk up on Thursday and be done. I suppose like we could probably
talk to the people at packs and be like, hey, can you give
me like a really long ladder so I can like go put one like up
on that rafter where no one's going to steal that. Yeah, because then
both people can watch way to like k and then yeah, it could take
you to the indie games too, Yeah, and and they would love to
have it there because you're bringing people to their both. Sure. I do
really like the idea of like they could also hold like stickers or something,
and then you could get like a physical sticker when or pins or something like
this. Maybe this will just as people to start making three ds. Maybe
we should this now mute this whole pot of the podcast. I believe with
content creation, you can tell everyone your exact idea and they're not going to
take it because they're lazy and they're going to do it. They're not as
passionate about nobody's passionate about three D. And there's the time that even the
time commitment, right, Like I've been doing a there's another project that I'm
doing that's like probably really even not that cool, but I'm stoked about it.
And I found it through the idea of I was watching a YouTube video
of this person that, um, you guys probably know who do you know?
John Riggs about Yeah, So he did a video which I won't name
because I don't want other people to get the idea look at me, and
um, I reached he mentioned it in a video and I really liked it
and I wanted to do it, but it was gonna be a lot of
work, and so I actually reached out to him, uh and he was
like, yeah, go for it, like please, And it was so
cool to like get that acceptance from him as well. He's just guy.
Yeah, I like him a lot. And he he actually brought his three
D out to this retro swat meat that I went to last week or the
week before, and I got to meet him and he was like tweeting as
well, like telling people to bring their three DS out. John Reese is
so cool, Like I'm glad you like him to no offense to anybody else,
but he's my favorite person in the Medal Jesus Crew. Like he's just
so nice, so sweet, so humble. Yeah, he's also a thousand
feetle I also, when I first came to the States, stayed with him
for a night in a hotel because I didn't really anybody to go out and
much money, and he was like, you stay with me. We didn't
know each other. We met that day and I don't know how to say
this on my PG family friendly way, but the room next door was very
loud, okay all night long and I'm sat there with John Riggs. You're
trying to when you're trying to sleep, music is playing, like yeah music,
yeah, but you were there with him and like it it was okay,
and like that was like really like the first time we had like seen
each other is when I got to his room and we were just listening to
that all night long. So you competed, right, yep. I imagine
if you would have had your scream, Imagine if you would have had your
three DS is the street pass you wouldn't have even been focusing on. Yeah,
let's go for a walk and get some puzzle pieces and stuff. You
know, what does this mean? What is the badge on me? Mean?
Oh, so you have that and my three DS just died two D
I got you, So that is very important. Um, this is probably
not going out before the h the E shop goes down to oh really,
yeah, is it today or yeah? I just don't know what time you
know that really means? But oh, today's twenty six so a day.
So yeah, the VIP badge is incredibly important. I didn't get it until
recently either, Like I you know, just did all the It was very
tedious to like go through all the street passes back in the day, right,
But but that badge gets you a bunch of different features, Like you
have a VIP room that you can put some of your favorite meason which is
nice. Like I'm actual street passed Reggie when you're ady three, and like
didn't even I even remember or know it. But it's probably because I thought
it was like an yeah, but it turns out it was his real,
real street pass. Um. But so I've thrown some of my favorite some
of my best friends in there. Now you have that room, you get
extra goals like the there's a birthday incentive now as well, so like street
pass every single day of the year's birthdays basically. Uh, and so that
VIP badge gets you a bunch of things like that. But the best part
is that you get the line, which I would I was going to point
to here, Oh, that's part of the thing. It is. Yep,
you only get that with the badge, and it's a five dollar purchase
in the US. But yeah, that that line is critical because uh,
I guess so, hum, I mean it was. It got talked up
a lot when the when the announcement first came out and stuff. I mean
I don't remember getting Reggie, so like it's good memories or whatever. Um.
But yeah, that line at allows you to send extra people into your
into like a queue. So, like you were saying earlier, you can
you can only get ten people on your street pass account at in a moment,
and then you have to like go play with all of them and then
and then they go into your plause and then you can get more people.
But with that line, you can just open your three DS or two DS
and you can click that button that says like send them to the queue or
send them to the line. Yeah, which is useful because yeah, I
don't want to have to especially last night where yeah, like one hundred fifty
people in a room and pass right, And that explains why that person you
were talking about must have gotten ninety one, which is killer in ten minutes.
Yeah, they're just opening and closing and sending to the line, and
it is quick now, but it's that's gonna be like I, you know,
I have ninety seven right now. It's gonna be like a lot of
work on the plane ride home, I suppose. So what are you doing?
You're getting puzzle pieces from these people? Yeah, yeah, so you
yeah, you get puzzle pieces to completely what are you tfically doing? I'm
I want to do everything I bought, like the Street Pass games and there
are uh so you get too right off the bat, just like because this
was like a free it's entire highly free. It comes like if you buy
a three DS and format it Street Pass Plausa is on there yea, um,
but yeah, you get the puzzle swap. I think it's called where
you swap like little puzzle pieces with people and then you can when you complete
them. They're all based on like Nintendo or I think there's like a Master
Hunter Stories one even too. They have a few like third every major Nintendo
game as as a bunch of yeah like like murals, yeah that you unlock.
Yeah, you're right, and then once you once you get all the
pieces, you you end up getting to see this like nice image and on
the three DS you can actually see them often in three D, but then
you can use the the circle pad to like actually kind of move that around
and get like an extra little bit of depth to those images. And it,
um, it wasn't even that like insane, but it just added to
the the like, you know, lots of lots of gamers like to collect
things as well, I think, I think genuinely and anyone really likes to
collect stuff, unless if you're you know, trying to downsize. Really.
The other one was to find Me, Yeah that was or the quest that
Yeah, and you're totally right, it is fine me. Yeah, Like
it's not a dungeon crawler necessarily, but yeah, it's a reviewable. You
end up being captured. Do you ever play this? Nope, You've never
done street as at all. Yesterday you. I'm very excited for you because
I want to I want to hear how this. I just want to hear
your experiences about it. Like Later Find Me is a rudimentary like RPG where
you are a princess that gets trapped in a castle. Okay, they put
a little wig on you and make up. It's very funny. Flip the
script. Why because usually you're saving a princess. Oh yeah, that's a
really good point. So because you don't ever get to fight in the dungeon,
you're absolutely right, And I didn't I don't really consider that. Yeah,
so you use all of the people that you just found through your plaza
game, and they fight like monsters and ghosts and and and go through like
like a couple of tears of of of of turn based fighting and they all
get like one move and they hit them and then they go to the back
of the line. And so it encourages you to collect more people so that
you can get out of Yeah, so you can get out of your your
prison cage. And at the end it gives you like or something. Yeah.
Yeah, once once you beat like, it's not every dungeon battle that
you do, but yeah, You're right, you get like a little treasure
chest and sometimes they're a Nintendo theme things like the rupee. I I didn't
get that from that. Um I was the demon hand at the end of
the question. Yeah. Actually, I'm glad you brought that up too,
because that was a really cool moment to like to get that and then like
see people wearing it because it was like, oh you you played Street Pass
a lot to your street Yeah, just got Street Pass and then somebody had
a whole Wei you on that head last I remember you mentioned that that was
so funny. Uh yeah, Like the street Pass just does a lot of
really simple ways to kind of make you uh want to keep coming back,
and it all rolls back into Nintendo as well. It's it's and they use
their IP in fun ways like the like exactly like putting a we You.
I think. I I think I street past somebody that had a game Boy
on their head as well, and I was somebody had a game Boy.
Somebody had a game Boy. Um, if I find out, I'll let
you know. Somebody had a DS around the neck like actually at the event,
like in real life or no one yeah me, Yeah, his head
was like coming through it's amazing. Okay, okay, that's cool. Oh
it's like three D I get it. Oh my god, Wow, it's
really popping out there. But it's this, Yeah, there's just some way
like fun little little thing. You nailed it right on the head. I
love that find me as well as an RPG because you know, most there's
a good chance that people that play video games have played Pokemon, you know,
Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest or Persona or whatever maybe, but like everybody
for the most part kind of gets how Pokemon works, and that's just kind
of I know, you're not capturing things in this sense, but it's just
as simple as yeah, doing an attack or depending on the color shirt your
character wears as well, like they'll do if they're wearing a red shirt,
they'll deal fire damage. And maybe you maybe there's a ghost that's wearing a
they have a blue shield, and that shield is only defeated by somebody that's
wearing a blue shirt. So it like it kind of incentivizes you to continue
finding people, and it's it's really exciting when you well, it's it's deflating
when you get like twenty people and none of them have the shirtcular but then
when you get that all a waste, you just waste it. All those
people, Yeah you totally wasn't the defail shut color red. So like every
most people read, I feel like most people would you do? I honestly,
we'll have to go do some do some math. Then that's a really
good point. So all the other those are the two free street Pass games,
but all the other ones, by the time people are watching this,
they're not going to be able to get them. It's very, very sad.
So hopefully this whole thing will still How sure are you that this is
all still going to work after tomorrow? I? Oh my, whoa?
I mean I never this whole thing might be done tomorrow. Could you imagine?
Then there's just like down for us, like oh well, this is
a really good way to end in death. If there's even like a like
I don't know, this would never happen, but like there's like a thank
Zion or just like sorry, sorry, sorry Zion. It's just like in
there as well, like in the in the end use or an agreement or
something like that. Sorry the credit your whole video. Yeah, maybe we
turn on our three year system around the credits roll, Like I don't know,
yeah, but you're right. There are tons of other games that you
could everyone stops coming to the date the date and dying one by one drop
it. It's like what happens in um uh in it's in animal crossing,
I think when you kill a cockroach and there's like a yeah, that's what
happened here me. What if each one said something like really sentimental on the
way out. Maybe there's like Team Dogs and Team Cats and it's like total
Like it's like a Mario part party mini game, like how many people did
you have on each side for like who wanted to be a singer? Who
wanted to be a photographer when they grew up? And U that's this is
ridiculous. I would actually not be super mad about that. But then you
get to make the video earlier. Yeah, yeah, that's that's true.
Yeah, it's not as because when I get to the end of the year,
Yeah, I want to make a big video talking about what it was
like where, where are the best places to go? And uh And it's
gonna be intense when I get there, you know, because I'm just filming
things for a year. But so that would be nice. Actually, if
I if I got to end that now, but I don't want to do
you know about the street pass love discord. So I just I just found
this on Yahoo finance. There's like Yahoo finance. Yeah, I don't know
why, but March thirty first through April second, Um, there's a discord
and there's like a bunch of different locations all over the world. Yeah,
so I um, it sounds like geo cashing, remember geokash. So I
just I think I'm I'm glad you brought that up because I I love the
incentive or I love the initiative to like push street pass. I think people
need to do that. Um. But street pass is also like it's an
interesting thing where the internet can be a scary place, right like, and
the three ds allows you it gives you that chance to meet up with people
like you can't street pass on the internet with people right like you you have
to actually be within that radius with them. And I um, and this
is nothing actually to do with like street pass love. Really it's just,
um, I worry having a discord server four street passes is a tricky thing
because you you don't necessarily have that um, not that moderation, but that
like safety barrier. I think and I really you know, I want Street
Pass to come back super bad, but I think people also need to be
careful about like if someone reaches out to you and says like, hey,
I have a three DS, like do you want to meet like at the
at the seven eleven. Yeah, I heard they have Gears of War as
well, by the way, Um, and uh, you know, yeah,
so I think I I I just want to thank you for bringing that
up, because I really want to stress that, like people should be cautious
and use your use your head and um and go go to conventions, but
but be careful about it and because you just you never know, I just
scary stuff happened. No, I agree, definitely, and uh but yeah,
so I love the initiative that like Street Past Love is like putting out
there and everything. Um but uh but I think that's kind of why I
haven't created like a group or something like that, because I don't have the
time to moderate that. And I, um, I just would never want
something bad to happen. Which yeah, this probably feels really random and so
sorry if it. No, No, you're advocating for this thing to come
back and to bring all these people together. This is you at the head
of it. So if other people from that are creating discord, is what
maybe something bad could happened. It's good to get ahead of that and give
people that wanting because one you don't want it to come back to you,
but two you actually do care. Yeah that makes sense, but and you
hit it on the head too, like I, um, there have been
like I don't know, uh, it's really weird, Like I actually have
chills kind of like thinking about it right now. But like multiple people have
come up and like like show me their three DS is this week or like
been like hey, are youseeon, like look I brought I brought my three
DS you know, and it's like that's really surreal, and so um,
yeah, I do feel like I have a sense of ownership for this,
right and so yeah, I want to make sure that everybody has a fun
time and nothing. Yeah yeah, thank you, thanks man um. But
yeah, so I just yeah, I hope everybody just has a has a
good time with street Pass. Just be careful. And I don't know if
any horror stories or anything. It's kind of you gotta meet up in public
places or in event at events like yeah, like this, it's a lot
of Yeah, it's a lot of there's like Evo switching play and is in
New York. I know those guys who do that, they're good, um,
but it's like Nintendo, Nottingham, Paris, manga sci fi show.
It's all like events. Yeah, that's how it should be when actually too
back in the day. So there was a guy that, uh, there
was a person that came up to me at the event really early on.
You might have even seen them talking to me because I think I think you
guys were there still and they actually apparently ran a Boston Street Pass community.
Yeah, I remember, yeah, okay, and I I kind of knew
that things like that existed, but I never went to any like meetups four
Street Pass back in the day. But I think that's I would almost like
to see more communities like in I would like to see individual communities build up
about these things because I like the idea of holding like global events and stuff,
but like you know, you really kind of have to. It's kind
of like, I guess you can tell everyone to take the three d s
out for the weekend or something like that, but I think as well,
maybe it'd be better to like tell everyone to go to a certain place or
or or try to you know, set up a meet up, yeah,
at an event and U or or start in your area. I think too
because it sounds like, Um, I met another person last night that I
don't remember where their community was either, but they were showing me like they
used to run street pass events as well, and just like three d S
meetups and they would make like cakes like out of three ds s and uh
and it like like would bring they made like Parlar beads that they would give
out to people as just like commemorative tokens. And it was like, that's
I think the best part about street passes, um. I mean, it's
great to get the puzzle pieces and all of that, but like last night,
I had, I had my system out. I was hanging out like
a at a bar with a bunch of other like games people, I guess,
and I was looking at my street pass tags and I kid, you
know, I have a picture of him on my phone wherever that I don't
know where that is, but U but he UM, I got a picture
with him in the end because he was I was. He was standing behind
me while I was street passing, and he popped up on my three DS
and he came out to me. I had no idea who he was,
and he was like, hey, that's that's me. And then we ended
up like no, no, no, he um he does. But neither
of us knew each other. And then we ended up talking for like ten
or fifteen minutes at the event. And I think that's the coolest thing about
really street passes, that it gets people to come together. And so I
think out of all of this, I want I want people to be careful,
but I also think that it'd be good if if people try to,
you know, make things in there, you know where they can you know,
So is that the first street pass you got where you didn't ask the
person to give you a street pass? So I at that retro swat meat
that I saw John Riggs at last week, I ended up getting twenty nine
street pass tags at or maybe it was twenty nine or thirty nine. And
uh but Metal Jesus tweeted about it and he John breaks it as well.
Sure, but I I um, because you're asking those people to bring their
their right and even I mean I did kind of like I kind of asked
a lot of people here as well, and just like and there were a
few friends I like reached out to. But then you also, I didn't
even have to ask you. You were like, well, I know I
did it because you post. But you also, like genuinely you said I
want to street pass uzon And I was like, is what the hell is
happening right now? This is so weird party whole well thing. But that
you know, that's it's just kind and so I yeah, I want to
see the community grow, and I want to see people in areas, you
know, because there were a lot of street pass meet up things back when
three DS was popular. Um, I I was close friends with um.
His name is Ryan. He's a Nintendo brand or not brand ambassador, but
a marketing manager at a retail rep rather. So he would like go to
the stores and change out the posters and like make sure all of the games
are displayed properly at like walmarts and um and then he would host like grassroots
events as well. And he had like I think it was a street past
Milwaukee where he would do a thing like once a once a month he would
go to the game stop and set up a table and have like promotional material
for like maybe have like stickers for paper Mario Sticker Star or like a coloring
book for Kirby and the Rainbow Curse on we you. But then you would
always just have a three DS there and I love that, Like I would
love people at like Pokemon leagues to start bringing their their systems or uh yeah,
when you go to a Smash tournament, you know, take it there
and um, because those are those are places that I think, uh,
you know, just yeah, like like you said, having public places and
it all control, you know, still works if you hack your three D
s, right, I'm well, we hope right, and that that that's
is that what you were saying? Earl? Okay, we're good. We
were before we were talking about yeah, before we talking about well, I
think you said just have s. I'm sorry, No, if you hack
your three DS, it should still work, that's right. Yeah. Yeah,
as far as we know, this has been going just fine and you
could and I updated it recently too, and it's been just fine. So
to get even more used out of your three DS if you do that,
yeah, it sounds like there'll be yeah, there'll be ways people can That's
another reason to have this around as you're like a go to gamming device like
a lot of like a lot of people watch me. They have like,
you know, all the portable emulation Ultimate. No, so I got it.
Thing. So I got this one because it was the first special edition
of the New three DS and I wanted I had the original three DS and
it was ugly and stupid looking, and uh, I wanted a new one
by the time they made the new three DS is but I wanted a special
one if I wanted to do that. So I got this and it came
with the game every special Boy, thank you. That's what my parents and
all my teachers said. This came with Monster Hunter for Ultimate. So I
played it and I liked it a little bit. Okay, you know what,
every time I played Monster Hunter, I'm like, every time I'm done
playing it, I'm like, that sucked. I hate this game. But
then I think about it lot. I want to keep playing that when you
want to keep playing get stuck in the loop. Yeah, how did you
play Ahead? Yeah? I played it? Yeah, I played did you?
I played a decent that was good because I played with other people.
Yeah. I think I played the demo for Rise and then it was like
I need people around. Um, Yeah, do you really like Master Hunter.
I didn't until Rice. I love Rice. It's the only one I
like. I tried playing World as well. I couldn't get into that.
Okay, yeah, World World. I did the same thing. I played
for like a few hours, and I was like, that was horrible.
It looked I kept thinking about it, and then I kept jumping back into
it looked pretty, but it's pretty boring. Like a different approach to Monster
Hunter. It was super different. Um it was trying to get more um
like us people into the franchise, and I think it did. I think
it accomplished. I think it did. It was it was very popular.
They like made a lot of things more simpler in my opinion. Uh,
and then Rise is a little bit more return to form, but with a
lot of world the elements back. I do not want to wrap us up,
but they will literally kick us out of this room. Oh yeah,
no, we do. Oh yeah, sorry, guys, it's it's we're
doing a podcast in the morning for a change, and we will have to
be out of this room before. When is it noon? I got a
package. Okay, yeah, you know I'll help too. By the way,
I'm gonna help us back. I'm not just gonna run off. Let's
go. You don't have to. Yeah, I got a bunch of clothes.
You can start falling. I went to pa. I love folding shirts
into square Yeah, heck yeah. So thanks for coming, man, thank
you, thanks for thanks for having me, thanks for letting me talk about
street paths through no, thank you. It was really fun to listen to.
I think this is the podcast I've said. I am very sorry.
I like, wait, just what was saying? What's that The joke is
that would like to talk about himself on the podcast? So now that's it's
a that's a podcast, Bob. Yeah, no, I didn't mean it
being bad by that. I literally have just been here listening to you two
talk and it's been nice. I've had a good conversation. Good. I'm
glad you enjoyed yourself. I really just this was good. I respect you
guys a lot, so like this means a lot to me, and so
thanks, thanks, thanks you so much. I want to like to talk
more about, like, you know, what we did this week we still
haven't talked about. Had a lot. I had a list of things I
wanted to bring up. We talked about what we did like as a job,
and then that and the DS and that's it. You aren't supposed to
be so interesting. Honestly, Oh, come on, Honestly, I love
it because I love talking shop and I'm don't worry. I'm embargo and I'm
