00:00:00 Speaker 1: You are listening to The Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio. 00:00:05 Speaker 2: Isaiah Callier played all forty eight minutes last night, had seventeen points in twenty two assists, and Utah ended up winning. Caller went to USC for one year. Marvin Raight, Yeah, he was on. He played the same year as Bronnie James. Okay, you could tell which one was the NBA player, So Bronni played with him? Not he played with Bronnie correct, Yes, but we thought there was a big difference when you watch those two plays, like, well, that guy's an NBA player, that guy has a dad who plays in the NBA. Sure. 00:00:36 Speaker 1: Getting a text from you at eleven thirty eight at night. 00:00:39 Speaker 2: Yeah, we're watching the USC game. Was like, who's that texting? It's Dan twenty two assists, most in the NBA this season, most by a jazz player since John Stockton had twenty two in nineteen ninety two. Got you by Panini America, the official trading cards of The Dan Patrick Show. Did we come up with an answer, Paul, of most NBA teams by a Hall of Famer? 00:01:10 Speaker 3: Yeah, and these are guys either in or going in. So there's a bunch of sixers uh six times. Tracy McGrady had six, Shack six, Wu Tumbo six, Carmelo Anthony six. Now the sevens, Moses Malone, Dwight Howard, Chauncey Billups still in the hall, Bob McAdoo, Adrian Dantley's seven teams, Dan and one guy had eight. Here's the hint. One of us, I think everybody loves this guy. Well, one of us on the staff really loves this guy. Okay, that's the hint. Probably his favorite basketball player. It's not me Marvin or Seaton, all right, his Seaton. Oh there's a hint. 00:01:50 Speaker 2: The hint is it's me your favorite basketball player. 00:01:55 Speaker 4: I think so. 00:01:55 Speaker 2: One of the guys that I talk about a lot, Marvin, Vince Carter Okay, Vin fan half amazing. 00:02:03 Speaker 4: Yes, Vincent Lamark Harter Junior eighteams. 00:02:07 Speaker 2: The third Cooper flag at thirty six, nine and six. They lost. MAVs lost to the Celtics and the Warriors had just two free throws in the loss to the seventy six ers. We talked to Steve Kerr prior to the game yesterday and my first question was are you a football fan? 00:02:27 Speaker 5: I do, yeah, yeah, big fan. I watch everything and who do you root for? Well, I root for the Niners. I was a Rams fan growing up, and then when they moved to Saint Louis, I discarded them, And so I've become a Niners fan living up here in the last twelve years. 00:02:44 Speaker 2: But then when the Rams came back, you didn't go back. 00:02:46 Speaker 6: Yeah, it's too late. 00:02:48 Speaker 5: It's like you know, your ex girlfriend, you know, runs off with someone and then comes back. 00:02:53 Speaker 6: It's not the same thing. 00:02:54 Speaker 2: So how much blame do you take for the proliferation of the three point shot? 00:03:04 Speaker 5: Yeah, I take I take zero responsibility for that, just so you know. 00:03:09 Speaker 2: Well, so it's all on Steph. 00:03:12 Speaker 6: I blame Steph for all of it, every bit of it. 00:03:15 Speaker 2: Yeah, But when did you come to the grips of I'm going to let him shoot wherever whenever. 00:03:22 Speaker 5: Mid midway through my first season coaching him, there's there's actually a clip that's probably right when it happened. It's a famous clip where he dribbles around his back, through his legs around four different guys on the Clippers with a light blue short sleeve jerseys on. Yeah, and he shoots like a fade away twenty six footer and they show me on the sidelines. 00:03:46 Speaker 6: I'm holding it. So I don't know if. 00:03:50 Speaker 5: It was that moment, but there there definitely was a moment that season, my first year coaching him, where everything I'd ever been taught, all of my coaches and pretty much all of whom were in the Hall of Fame. And by the way, everything I was ever taught was, you know, these are terrible shots. 00:04:10 Speaker 6: You can't shoot that. You can always get a better shot later. 00:04:14 Speaker 5: And then about halfway through my first year coaching staff, I realized that's part of his power, and you just let him rip and he's going to take some bad ones, but in the end he's going to shoot over forty percent, and there's something about his swashbuckling approach that is really powerful for the team. 00:04:33 Speaker 2: Can you teach it? 00:04:36 Speaker 6: I don't think so. 00:04:37 Speaker 5: I don't think you can teach it. I think players have to have that. But the tricky part is you can sorry about my dog in the background. 00:04:48 Speaker 6: You can get you. 00:04:50 Speaker 5: Can get players who have it, but they shouldn't have it, you know what I mean. Like the opposite can be true too, Like a guy who has that attitude which you know you kind of admire, but the person shooting percentages don't go hand in hand. 00:05:09 Speaker 2: Could you imagine, though, Larry Bird with today's philosophy or you know, throw out whoever, like, what kind of numbers are they putting up shooting from the three point range? 00:05:21 Speaker 5: Well, I think I think we're going to see it with Konk Nipple doing what he's doing in his rookie year. You know, this is you know, probably the first generation of rookies who have really grown up and learned basketball, you know, watching Steph Curry and watching the style of play these days with the pace and the three point shots, and you know, for most most of the young players over the past half decade or so, it's it's felt more like, all right, this is kind of where it's all heading. And with with Canipple, it's more like this is already where I am right way, and you can see what a great shooter is the volume. 00:06:04 Speaker 6: I think you're going to start seeing more and more players. 00:06:06 Speaker 5: Who come in with that approach because analytically and stylistically the game has really evolved over the last decade. 00:06:15 Speaker 2: Tour it is now and Caitlyn Clark doesn't happen without Steph Curry, right. 00:06:20 Speaker 6: Totally agree, totally agree, and it really. 00:06:23 Speaker 5: Is remarkable when you think about how Steph has impacted the game beyond just the records and the championships and everything else. It's it really is an art form with him, and there's there's only you know, certain athletes who can really emulate him. 00:06:42 Speaker 6: But this this you know. 00:06:45 Speaker 5: In terms of the fluidity and the movement and the grace, but stylistically, analytically, everything has kind of led to this point I think in the league, and Steph is at the forefront of that. 00:06:59 Speaker 6: Obviously. 00:07:00 Speaker 2: Talking to Steve Kerr, the Warriors head coach, I'm curious that you played for Pop, you played for Phil, you played for lut Olson. If I said, give me the one thing, if there's one thing you took from those three Hall of Fame coaches, yeah. 00:07:16 Speaker 6: It's a great question. 00:07:17 Speaker 5: I mean, I've definitely taken a lot from all of them. I played for Lenny Wilkins in Cleveland for three years, brilliant Hall of Fame coach. I think what I would say ties them all together is their authenticity just to who they are, what they believe in, what they stand for. I think you have to have conviction as head coach. You can believe in anything. You can come from any kind of background, but the players need to feel that conviction, that authenticity, that compassion for what your players are going through, what they're dealing with day after day. All of those things, you know, I felt from all four of those Hall of Fame coaches. 00:08:03 Speaker 2: But do you believe that everybody is individual? Used to be the old school style is you're all the same, it's a team, but there's so many personalities and demands on a game and time and you know, stardom, and so do you subscribe more to what Phil Jackson was doing with the Bulls, Well, I. 00:08:23 Speaker 6: Think Phil was ahead of his time. 00:08:25 Speaker 5: He was probably at the forefront of what you're seeing with a lot of modern coaches, which is very much being in tune on the emotional side with your players. I thought Phil came around right at the end of the my ware of the Highway type, you know style coaching, and he helped us. You're in this modern era that we're in where yes, there's there's more empowerment for the players, but it's also just society. How different we are, you know, the way we live, the way we see things, and so I think coaches today are much more like like Phil than they would have been, you know during Phil's time, just being really aware of everything that's happening. 00:09:13 Speaker 6: But what made. 00:09:14 Speaker 5: Phil really unique was his background and his interest in his love for Native American spirituality. And you know a lot of people made fun of all that stuff, calling him Chief Triangle or. 00:09:26 Speaker 6: Whatever, but it was real. 00:09:28 Speaker 5: You know, he was so brilliant and so authentic, and we felt, we genuinely felt like part of his tribe. You know, he would say that and we've felt it, and that was what made him so great. 00:09:42 Speaker 2: Are you and Steph a package deal? Is this? Are you going to coach until Steph leaves? 00:09:48 Speaker 6: Well? I would never leave him. I can tell you that I love Steph. 00:09:52 Speaker 5: I'm so incredibly lucky to have coached him for twelve years. I think every coach kind of dreams of, you know, coaching somebody like Steph, who is arguably the greatest faith of the franchise of any player who's ever lived. 00:10:10 Speaker 6: And I will never leave him. 00:10:12 Speaker 5: I can tell you I'm not going to become a free agent and go sign with another team to coach. But it all has to play out, you know, with the organization, and but yeah, hopefully that that's how it ends up. 00:10:26 Speaker 6: But you never know. 00:10:28 Speaker 2: Trade deadline comes and goes. You were traded five times, yes, five times. How tough is that? You go home and you tell your wife and I don't know if you had little ones at home. 00:10:40 Speaker 5: Really hard, really hard. It's a lot easier if you get traded in the off season. 00:10:46 Speaker 2: Was there a city where you said to your wife, Hey, I got traded, where are we going. 00:10:55 Speaker 5: There was only one time when I lived away from my family, and that was when I got traded from San Antonio to Portland. 00:11:03 Speaker 6: But it wasn't because of the city. 00:11:04 Speaker 5: It was because I was traded during the school year and it was just before camp. 00:11:10 Speaker 6: It would have been probably mid to late September. 00:11:13 Speaker 5: Kids are already in school and we just decided, you know, to leave them there and I went up to Portland on my own. And that's a really difficult thing to do, but something that a lot of a lot of NBA players end up having to do. 00:11:27 Speaker 2: You talked about Steph. I maintained that he has changed the game, probably more than any other basketball player. From this standpoint of you know, be like Mike. Nobody could be like Mike, but you feel like you can be like Steph. And I don't know if we're getting into Victor wimben Yama. Is he going to change the game. Are we going to look back and you know, fifteen years and say, oh my gosh, he started this. But then, I mean, I don't know. Steph's so unique that we've seen big men who are athletic, and you know, Dirk could shoot from the perimeter when be Yama, the fact that he is so good at both ends of the floor. I don't know if he reminds you of anybody else. 00:12:09 Speaker 5: No, I mean, if if you think it would be hard to be like Mike, imagine telling your kid be like Victor, be taller, just be taller, keep eating those carrots. 00:12:21 Speaker 6: Son. I don't know. 00:12:23 Speaker 5: I just think he is more of a unicorn than anybody I've ever seen. Just the size and the skill, but also the awareness, the desire to be great. You can see it, you know, I've never even talked to him or met him, but you can see it, you know, just in the way he carries himself. 00:12:45 Speaker 6: But there's so few people. 00:12:47 Speaker 5: Who are ever born to look like that, And I think that's what Steph's appeal is, you know, to so many people, boys and girls. I mean he is He's someone who at least you can imagine and. 00:13:01 Speaker 6: Being like for real. Now that's not. 00:13:04 Speaker 5: Really true either, because he has the greatest hand eye coordination of anybody on earth. But he's inspiring so many people and it's really fun to watch. 00:13:14 Speaker 2: I think you had thirty career starts. That sound about right. 00:13:19 Speaker 6: That sounds like a lot. Actually, yeah, I looked it up. 00:13:22 Speaker 2: I think one year you had you know, like twenty starts. Yeah, and you might have the fewest starts. You might be the most famous person in NBA history with the fewest starts rings per start ratio. I mean it's pretty good. 00:13:40 Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm very proud of that. 00:13:42 Speaker 2: I'm sure you are, sure, sure you are. I'm curious if your kids know the feeling of when you yell at Draymond. Did they ever know that rap that you know when you yell at him? 00:13:57 Speaker 6: To be fair, my kids have never yelled at me like Draymond. 00:14:06 Speaker 2: Fair enough, Uh, that you've never run him? You you probably set your kids basically to you know, the showers, Yeah. 00:14:16 Speaker 5: Send him, send him to an early shower and early early bedtime. 00:14:19 Speaker 6: That might have happened a couple of times back in the day. 00:14:22 Speaker 2: But you and Draymond are going to be friends for life, right. 00:14:26 Speaker 5: He is the best I I You know, he's so emotional and passionate and we've been connected for twelve years in this quest to win. 00:14:36 Speaker 6: And he's the. 00:14:39 Speaker 5: First to tell you he's flawed, uh and uh he goes overboard at times, but you know he's he's such a competitor and his will to win is kind of what's not only gotten him this far, but also gotten him into trouble over the years. And he knows that, and so it's it's been something that he and I I have really tried to work on together and you know, kind of embrace because you can't win without competitive desire like that on your team. 00:15:12 Speaker 2: Thanks for taking time. I know you're busy, and good luck. 00:15:16 Speaker 6: Always good to see it. Dan Steve. 00:15:23 Speaker 2: His dog started attacking him, and I'm like, somebody loves you, you know. But yeah, I've known Steve a long long time, go back to the Arizona days. But he played for lud Olsen, place for Phil Jackson, place for Greg Papa bitch. If you're looking at careers, where you go, Okay, that guy had thirty career starts, but he ends up being part of what nine NBA titles as player and coach, assistant coach, playing on the Bulls, playing with Mike. Pretty amazing career and he's going to go into the Hall of Fame and go back to when remember when Phil Jackson left the Knicks or stepped down, and we thought Steve Kerr was going to go to the Knicks and then he eventually replaces Mark Jackson with Golden State, and that's when we didn't know how good Golden State was. They were curiosity and then all of a sudden, Steve said, you know, I can unlock the potential of this team. But they almost traded Klay Thompson for Kevin Love. And I think Mark Jackson was still the head coach and I asked him about that and he said, I'll I'd never give up Klay Thompson and Kevin Love was a big deal. I mean he was giving you, you know, thirty twenty He gave you a thirty thirty game. Yeah, Paulie. 00:16:44 Speaker 3: This was in twenty fourteen, right before the run started. They almost traded Kevin Love for Klay Thompson. Tons of stories about it. 00:16:53 Speaker 1: Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am PACIFICO Sports Radio in the iHeartRadio app. 00:17:04 Speaker 7: Steve gotts Here. WHOA look at that he is? He is NASCAR already. Let's that looks like a Jeff Gordon jacket Rainbow Warrior jacket. Yes, sir, shout out to Jeff. 00:18:40 Speaker 6: That is nice. 00:18:41 Speaker 2: Is that where you got it from? 00:18:42 Speaker 8: Yeah, he said it to me a few years ago. Phil, I gotta bust it out out here on the bay, you know. 00:18:46 Speaker 2: Okay, looks nice. I appreciate you guys. 00:18:49 Speaker 9: How you guys doing. 00:18:49 Speaker 6: You guys are not cold? 00:18:51 Speaker 2: Oh, it's not bad. Can we raise up RG three's microphone a little bit? Yeah, let the pros do it. You got Yeah, we're just saying, just saying, no one missed the mic up. We've been talking about this eighteen games. The commissioner says that he hadn't been no formal informal talks about an eighteen game schedule. Yeah, and then the Players Association say, you know, we don't want it, we don't need it. Now. This is the last leverage play that these players in the Player Association are going to have for a long time. I'm gonna guess, yeah, should we go to eighteen games? And if so, what, No, we shouldn't. 00:19:32 Speaker 8: I don't think the players ever wanted to go to Thursday night games either. You know, you look at it from a health and safety standpoint, you know, getting three days off, four days off and then getting right back out there and playing and going to getting like seventy car accidents again is never a good thing for the players. The one thing I would say is that if the NFL does want to go to eighteen and the players want to make more money, this would be the time for them to claw back the rookies being capped. You know, they cap the rookies, and because of that, it created shorter careers because now the rookies are cheaper. So if you're a ten year vet and they can go get a running back for less than a million. 00:20:11 Speaker 2: Bucks, wasn't Sam Bradford the last yes. 00:20:13 Speaker 8: He was, I was like seventy or eighty million, right. So then Drew Brees is sitting there and he's like, there's no. 00:20:19 Speaker 4: Way this guy should be making more money than me. 00:20:21 Speaker 2: I'm like, I agree, but don't tell your agent and you can make more money. 00:20:26 Speaker 8: And I always thought that that was a mistake by the veterans at that time, so they could use this eighteenth game to uncap the rookies and I promise you salaries with Skyrocket. 00:20:35 Speaker 2: But also, if you look at eighteen games, people are gonna watch, Yeah, I don't think people are concerned about player safety. Only if your quarterback, right, yeah, only if my quarterback is not going to be able to play correct because everybody else feels like interchangeable, even though that's not true. But if Mahomes is out there or his backup is out there, that's a big difference. But I don't know if somebody is gonna say I'm not gonna watch, or I'm not going to gamble or you know, fantasy, all of the things that are attached to this just too much money. 00:21:06 Speaker 8: I think the players are more worried about player safety than maybe the league and or the fans. But when you look at you know, the seventeenth game right now, teams that are in the playoffs, they're not playing their starters anyway. And we've seen so many backup quarterbacks play over the years, and I think if we looked at the numbers, there's probably been more backup quarterbacks that have played because of that extra game and because of those Thursday night games and the rise of injuries. 00:21:30 Speaker 2: I keep seeing this story it's not going away, and it's Drake May's shoulder. Oh like it's oh, you know, he's full participant now, or he's able to throw now. I don't know if it's just because it's Super Bowl, we can we're looking for something, right it. Do you think it's something. 00:21:48 Speaker 8: I think it's Mike Rabel just you know, playing coy a little bit. You look at Sam Donald's injury with the oblique right, A lot of people were saying, oh, he's trying to find excuses as to why he's he's not gonna play. 00:22:00 Speaker 2: Well, I think y'all know what I'm talking about. I thought that was ridiculous. 00:22:04 Speaker 8: But when you look at Drake May, there's an opportunity there for them to say, hey, maybe maybe he can't throw it as well. Maybe they're trying to lull the Seahawks to sleep knowing that he's gonna come out there and be able to toss it around with the best of them. But I don't think it's necessarily an issue. But the issue for me with Drake May, right, now is the fifteen sacks in the three games. They haven't been able to protect him, and I think there's been a mandate from very Able to tell him, do not hurt us, do not throw interceptions, protect the football. We have a good enough defense to get it done. In Our running game is good enough. I don't think that itself is going to be good enough in the Super Bowl though. 00:22:39 Speaker 10: Yeah. 00:22:39 Speaker 2: I think his legs have to win this game. I really do. Of everything that they need, I think they need Drake May to be rushing for like sixty yards something like that, make them pay, because I thought he could have done that the last game. I thought there were openings there against Denver and he didn't. Now I know the conditions, but I'd rather have that than just and off to the running back and he's gonna get two or three yards there. 00:23:03 Speaker 8: Yeah, And it's it's what he did on that that last play to kind of seal it. I've been saying for two weeks that Drake May needs to get it, needs to get out in the open field and getjiggy with it. 00:23:11 Speaker 2: Right. 00:23:12 Speaker 8: He has to use his legs. It's just it's the bottom line. And when I look back and look at the numbers and I'm like, you know, he actually has been getting jiggy with it out in the open field. I think he's got nine scrambles, you know, in the postseason. I think only person that's run for more yards and in recent postseasons has been Patrick Mahomes. So I just want to see him instead of having I'd like to see him have nine scrambles in this game. Yeah, the Seahawks are not great at stopping quarterbacks who scramble, giving up over five yards per scramble, but they're great at stopping traditional running backs. So, for from Drake May's standpoint, get out in the open field when they when they pressure you, because they are going to pressure you, make them pay with your feet so that they can kind of sit back a little bit and now you can go pick him apart, even if your shoulders hurting a little bit. 00:23:57 Speaker 2: Like you, Okay, you seem cold. I'm not cold. I'm not cold at all. You're just acting cold. I'm not I'm acting cold cold. Yeah, you're kind of squirming around. You want a heater over there? 00:24:06 Speaker 8: No, No, I'm just trying to make sure I look at everybody in the eyes and. 00:24:10 Speaker 2: Oh, you're going to your like fourth and fifth read here? 00:24:13 Speaker 5: Is that? 00:24:13 Speaker 2: What it's good is Sam Donald? Has he removed that bust guy like he got to the Super Bowl? Does he still have to win the Super Bowl? You know for you to you know, co sign on this for me? Yeah? 00:24:32 Speaker 8: No, no, I'm I'm all in. I'm all in on Sam Donald. I think for the public. Yeah, he has to. This could really be a Jared Goff situation if if he does not play well in the super Bowl. Hell, I forgot Jared Goff played in the Super Bowl a couple of weeks ago when I was tweeting about this because he played so Yeah, he played so bad that the fans kind of and the coach kind of, yeah, kicked him to Detroit. 00:25:00 Speaker 2: Right. 00:25:00 Speaker 8: So when I look at if. 00:25:01 Speaker 2: They win that Super Bowl, do they make that trade for Matthew Stafford? No, not even close. Yeah they don't. But Stafford's an upgrade anyway, Oh he is. But would it be the loyalty if you won a Super Bowl for us? 00:25:14 Speaker 8: Has anyone anyone ever traded the quarterback that they won a Super Bowl with the next year? 00:25:20 Speaker 2: I don't know. Paul check what Marvin the Ravens got rid of Trent Dilfer after they won the Super Bowl. 00:25:26 Speaker 8: Okay, but is Sam Donald Trent Dilfer? No respect to Trent dilferd No, you won a super Bowl. I did not want to Super all respect my guy. 00:25:37 Speaker 5: Does anybody get dragged more for winning a Super Bowl than Trent Delt No one does. 00:25:41 Speaker 2: But you won a super Bowl? No, you can't. Can't get mad that. 00:25:44 Speaker 8: So I think Sam Donald to answer your question, I think it's one of the greatest comeback stories in NFL history because he was drafted so high, went from seeing ghosts to now. 00:25:56 Speaker 2: What does it mean? Did you see ghosts in the pocket? You just never admitted it. No, I never saw ghosts in the pocket. 00:26:02 Speaker 8: But I think he He's a super honest dude, and the one thing I've been really fond of Sam for Actually, I coached Sam at the All American Game when he's in high school. 00:26:11 Speaker 2: So I've got a picture of me and him. 00:26:12 Speaker 8: Maybe I'll post it after they won Super Bowl, but I coached him at that point, and he's always been a humble young man. 00:26:18 Speaker 2: He doesn't win the Super Bowl, you're not gonna post. I'll definitely post. I'm rooting for you still, I got your back. 00:26:26 Speaker 8: But he's never taken a shot at the Jets. 00:26:29 Speaker 2: He never had him and he just said, hey, I learned, Yeah, I learned, And. 00:26:35 Speaker 8: That's what that's what that's what I saw. That's a clip that I saw from your show with him. You are done a great job. But I just think he's playing so well these last two games, protecting the football. You talked about the interception like the prop bet. Yeah, yeah, he's more likely to do that. But he's protected the football so far in the playoffs, and he's got all the fixings at the dinner table right now, starting with Jackson Smith and Gibba at Gibba, and then you got you know, Rashid Shaheed, Cooper Cup, they got Kenneth Walker in there in the backfield. I just the Seahawks team seems like they're ready to go get their bike back from this Patriots can. 00:27:04 Speaker 2: He used a RG three football and I get your bike back is to get your bike back game baby out of pocket with RG three. 00:27:13 Speaker 6: You like that one. 00:27:15 Speaker 2: I haven't heard the getting your bike from the movie Friday Friday. Let me say you got to reach your bike back. I'll give you another one. 00:27:22 Speaker 6: Uh. 00:27:24 Speaker 8: Bruce Lee Roy is Shownough's the Master? 00:27:27 Speaker 2: Who's the Master? 00:27:28 Speaker 8: So right now it feels like the Patriots are show enough. 00:27:31 Speaker 2: Wait is that the name of the movie, The Last Last Dragon? 00:27:34 Speaker 8: You ever seen The Last Dragon? 00:27:35 Speaker 2: It's the Black Bruce Lee story. Basically his name is Bruce Lee Roy. 00:27:39 Speaker 8: Bruce Lee Roy showing up, Yes, basically showing up, Basically showing up as the Patriots. They've been bullying the Seahawks for a while, and now Bruce Lee Roy is coming up and he's like, you know what, I got the glow? 00:27:54 Speaker 2: Now you know what I'm saying? 00:27:55 Speaker 4: Yes, t was that with kissing my Converse and de Barge I don't remember, Fitty more Converse. 00:28:06 Speaker 2: My man got the Cultured. 00:28:08 Speaker 4: And must see your baby. 00:28:11 Speaker 10: The Morning Light. 00:28:15 Speaker 4: Forget about the words on your mind. 00:28:17 Speaker 2: You can leave them all behind. 00:28:19 Speaker 1: To the beat. 00:28:25 Speaker 2: We are a musical. 00:28:26 Speaker 6: Now, this is notable. 00:28:28 Speaker 2: You probably didn't think you were going to be doing this. 00:28:30 Speaker 4: And it's always an adventure on the show. 00:28:34 Speaker 2: It's still painful for me to watch the play at the goal line with Seattle against New England, with Marshawn and with RG three if if you were in that situation, Oh yeah, and Darryl Bebbell calls the play? Is there a check down? I mean, can you change the play? Do you think if you're r G three in that moment? Yeah, you can. 00:29:00 Speaker 8: You know what you really do is you listen to the play and then you act like your headset went out. 00:29:06 Speaker 6: What I can't hear you huh? 00:29:09 Speaker 8: And you hand the ball off to Marshaun Lynch and listen. I've done it before in my career when I heard a play come in and I didn't love the play call in that moment, in that situation, and I changed it. 00:29:20 Speaker 2: But not with the super Bowl on the line. 00:29:22 Speaker 4: You have to you have to. 00:29:25 Speaker 8: There's some truth to what Marshawn Richard Sherman, Cam Chancellor have alluded to that that was a glory moment. 00:29:36 Speaker 2: That makes sense. They wanted Rush to be the MVP. 00:29:38 Speaker 8: I thought, I don't didn't necessarily disagree with that because I know coaches in my own career when we've gotten into the red zone, they have made calls because they want a guy to get the numbers, they want a guy to have more rushing touchdowns or whatever it may be. So I think it was a glory moment and they gave him the option to throw that slant, and if you're the quarterback in that moment, you have to say to yourself, what's the smartest play I can make? Here we're dominating them on the ground. I'm handing the ball off to Marshawn Lynch. 00:30:09 Speaker 2: I bet if he gets stopped now the clock time out. And then because Belichick knew that, Yeah, but just the fact that the most unsung part of that is Browner jams the receiver right so he can't have a pick, and the fact that they practice that on Wednesday. You know, mccordy told us, he said, you know that's the key. You jam the guy who's gonna pick, and Malcolm has free reign. You gotta go straight ahead. And I mean, it's the greatest play in Super Bowl history. And he's coming from depth. 00:30:41 Speaker 8: So if they don't run this land they turn it into a corner out or something. He's just in a collision the receiver and then kind of go with him. 00:30:47 Speaker 2: I thought a run pass option. I don't allowed you to Russ could run or if you're gonna throw it, nobody's around it, you can throw it away. 00:30:56 Speaker 8: I don't blame Russell Wilson for making the throw I blame the coaches for making it an option that that to me is the is the key there, because you are asking what a second year quarterback to say, you know, screw the coach, I'm gonna do. 00:31:11 Speaker 2: I'm gonna do what I want to do. 00:31:12 Speaker 8: I'm gonna hand the ball off to Marshawn because that's what the right thing to do is. I don't blame the quarterback in that moment, but if you you. 00:31:18 Speaker 2: See Pete Carroll and there's an ISO camera on him and he is he's brought to his knees like he is devastated. And you see Marshawn Lynch walking over to the sidelines and Pete Carroll's standing there and he knows Marshaun's not even make an eye contact though. 00:31:34 Speaker 8: Yeah, it's the kind of play that makes the player hate you forever. And I think we've we've we've heard over the years that there's there's some of those defensive guys and including marsha On that that hate that staff despite the fact that they want a Super Bowl together. 00:31:47 Speaker 2: But did they turn on Russ after that? 00:31:50 Speaker 6: Oh? 00:31:50 Speaker 2: Yeah? But why? 00:31:54 Speaker 8: Because when you when when losing happens, especially at the highest level, they're all looking for someone to point the finger at. Now, say they handed off to Marshawn and Marshan doesn't get in. Do you think Marshaan's is hated as as Russell has become over the years. No, not at all, because that was the obvious play to make. And of course Marshawn's like, you know, he's like soup dog. He can he can smoke weed and do what ever he wants to do. And they're like, yeah, yeah, but Russell can go to you know, children's hospitals and give back to the community. 00:32:28 Speaker 2: And they're like, yeah, screw that guy. 00:32:30 Speaker 8: I don't I don't agree with that. But at the same time, when you lose at that level and everyone's like this is the obvious decision to make, they're gonna point that finger. And I think they continually pointed at Russ more than they pointed at Pete or or anyone else in the side. 00:32:46 Speaker 2: And he was the best player on the field that night. In my opinion, I thought Russ was better than Tom. He was and man, you just have that one, that one play, and what that does you know? Pete would have two Super Bowls. Russ would have tuaranteed Hall of Famer and he's still be in Seattle. You think so one hundred percent. 00:33:05 Speaker 8: I think that single moment deteriorated the entire dynasty that was building in Seattle because it pitted them against each other at that point. 00:33:14 Speaker 2: It's always great to see you. We love when you come on and thank you for all the contributions during the season. No, I appreciate you, guys. Maney the best he is. RG three is out of pocket with RG three podcast. Beautiful weather, Sun's coming up here with the ballpark and this is going to be a Although I said, check the weather, Paul, do we have rain in the four cast on Super Bowl Sunday. 00:34:01 Speaker 4: It doesn't look like it it's gonna be. 00:34:03 Speaker 3: I would say high fifties and overcast with only a fifteen percent chance of humidity and rain. 00:34:07 Speaker 2: Okay, all right, Dan Or Lomsky of the Mothership, you can see him on NFL Live every weekday at four Eastern and a former NFL and of course a legend at the University of Connecticut, where he lied about his forty yard dash time when he was in high school and he ran like a thirty eight yard forty yard dash and had a better time. But I love the ingenuity here. Let's make way for dan or Lomsky. Go hi, buddy, how you doing. He's and I liked to calling the standing the standing. 00:34:42 Speaker 9: Oh yeah, I'm never gonna I'm never gonna like let some of the things of my past go huh. 00:34:48 Speaker 6: That's that story. 00:34:50 Speaker 4: The end zone. 00:34:51 Speaker 2: No, that's that one's great. I don't like bringing up the end zone because that's easy to make fun. 00:34:57 Speaker 4: Thank you. 00:34:57 Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, But if you want to re tell that story, you can. 00:35:01 Speaker 4: Dam This is the forty story, the forty yard dash story. 00:35:04 Speaker 2: No, no, the end zone one. I'm kidding. 00:35:08 Speaker 4: Okay, that's not sure serious. 00:35:09 Speaker 2: I was like, there, ever, go no, because the forty yard dash showed ingenuity. 00:35:15 Speaker 4: I had no other choice. 00:35:16 Speaker 9: I realized I was such an unathletic person that if I wanted to go to college, I was going to have to Because that was back in the day, if you didn't cross a barrier in the forty yard or they were like just. 00:35:29 Speaker 4: Going to push you aside. 00:35:31 Speaker 9: And so I knew that if I didn't get the forty yard number, at least in their eye, to the bare minimum, that I wasn't going to go to at least the college that I certainly like wanted to are the level. So I just kicked a cone forward and went from there and somehow I stumbled into college football. 00:35:49 Speaker 4: And what was your time when I ran the forty that day? It was four to eight. Realistically, it was like five eight. 00:35:56 Speaker 9: I was telling I was telling Marcus so Marcus Spears, we were, we were yesterday, just I don't know what the story was, the genesis of it. 00:36:04 Speaker 4: We were talking about. 00:36:05 Speaker 9: It was me, Marcus, Ryan Clark, Kelsey were sitting there and we were talking about just how being on the field for the Pro Bowl, everybody's like six', four two hundred and ten plus and a freakazoid. Athlete and we were telling the stories back in the day Of Walter. Camp, obviously you know The Walter Camp All American. Team there's An All american team and Then Walter. Camp since it originated In connecticut always picks a player of The year From, connecticut and So marcus AND i came out of school the same. Year So marcus is telling the story of, Man i'm In connecticut And i'm at This Walter Camp award And i'm there with like, Me Larry, Johnson Larry, fitzgerald all these stars back in the. Day And he's, LIKE i watched this dude walk. In AND i go To Larry. Johnson i'm, like who is? That And Larry johnson's, LIKE i don't. 00:36:56 Speaker 4: Know and someone leans. Over he's, like That's dan R lovski And Larry larry, GOES i have never heard of that. 00:37:01 Speaker 9: Person And marcus looks at me and it looks At larry and he, Goes i'm a play in THE nfl for twenty. 00:37:07 Speaker 4: Years and So. 00:37:08 Speaker 9: Marcus was like telling the story of my, speech and in my, SPEECH i was, like, Listen i'm a kid From, Shelton. CONNECTICUT i ran sixty two in the forty my junior year of high. SCHOOL i was one hundred and sixty five pounds twenty one inch. Vertical And marcus spits out in his drink and he was, like your vertical was twenty one INCHES i, said, yeah. 00:37:29 Speaker 2: Yeah so damn, it you fooled. Him. 00:37:33 Speaker 9: Yeah, now my kids are, fourteen and one of them is just like, me And i'm just sitting there and he looks at. Me he's like five foot, five maybe ninety, pounds he's got no muscle on. Him he can, throw and he looks And i'm, like, DUDE i don't know what to tell. 00:37:47 Speaker 2: You, Man, sorry do you want your kids to play? 00:37:52 Speaker 9: Quarterback the only one of my kids THAT i truly in my gut think could play quarterback is my. 00:37:57 Speaker 2: Daughter my daughter is. 00:38:00 Speaker 4: The one who's like the crazy gifted. 00:38:02 Speaker 9: Athlete she's and she's got the right, mentality and she can throw it from here to the baseball. Park my, boys one boy can, throw BUT i don't think he's got the right. Mentality but they both they both play. Football BUT i KNOW i. 00:38:17 Speaker 4: Have no desire for right now for them to be the. 00:38:19 Speaker 2: Quarterback it's kind of crushing correct THAT i would go and watch my son play. Baseball he, tried BUT i would stand in the outfield because you, know they, think, oh, man you know your son must be really good at. Baseball he. Wasn't and it's and it's you can't help. Him there's only so much you can. 00:38:42 Speaker 4: DO i mean at the end of the. 00:38:43 Speaker 2: Day but it's crushing and you'd be out there and it'd be last, inning winning run at third and my son would come to the. 00:38:52 Speaker 10: Plate please, Walk just hit, him get hit by a, head anything To, God yeah You're. God, Okay So Dan orlovski joining us on loan for The. Mothership when you see Ghost we just HAD rg three on and he said he never saw. GHOSTS i don't know if quarterbacks everybody is going to say they never saw. Them But Sam darnold did admit that he saw Ghost what does that mean to? You and why would he admit to. 00:39:19 Speaker 9: THAT i think the admission is just his. REALITY i think he's comfortable and who he is and. Whatnot so even back, THEN i still believe That sam had a great comfort in his. SKIN i think seeing ghosts is when you start to chase things that aren't. There you, know from you, start when you're a quarterback and you get the, play the play call in your. Helmet the things that come into your, mind the thoughts that happened are in the. Hundreds what's the, play where's this person? 00:39:48 Speaker 4: Aligned what? Motion what? 00:39:49 Speaker 9: Shift what's the down and, distance how much time is on the, clock what's the? Situation who are they? Defensively what are they? In is this a blitz? Situation is that person the? Blitzer what's their? Coverage you have this trail of thoughts that start to go into your mind and you can start to chase things that aren't necessarily. There you have to Imagine, dan like you spend six days getting ready for a, game, right so you're just ingesting this information of game, plan your game, plan their game, plan your tape, study their tape, study and so you have This it's not one or two things that go into the, thoughts it's it's this run on sentence of hundreds of nuggets of. Information and then you can see one snap and the defense does one, thing and then you can see a snap or about to be a, snap and it looks the. Same but then you might think that another thing is going to happen when it, doesn't and so then it's just this rat. 00:40:44 Speaker 4: Race this if you imagine the rat on. 00:40:46 Speaker 9: The, wheel it's just this wheel of information that starts going through your head and you start to chase things that aren't necessarily. THERE i remember doing the breakdown, honestly after that. Morning it was one of my first times on get up AND i still to this day am adamant that. 00:41:03 Speaker 4: That wasn't a same darnold. 00:41:04 Speaker 9: THING i think a lot of quarterbacks would have done that Because New england showed the same thing all the time and brought something, different and so a lot of. 00:41:12 Speaker 4: QUARTERBACKS i think we're gonna struggle with. That certainly young. 00:41:15 Speaker 9: Kids the first time you're ever, experiencing you're, LIKE i have no idea what's going? 00:41:19 Speaker 4: On and SO i think once. 00:41:21 Speaker 2: The but Here's Drake may in his second. 00:41:23 Speaker 9: Year But drake hasn't really seen stuff like that on a consistent. Basis and, also you have to Remember josh McDaniel's twenty four postseason. GAMES i think he's been in THE nfl for twenty plus. Years the way That josh cuts out the fat on plays for him By, Okay i'll take a running back and motion them out. There, Hey, drake if there's a linebacker out, there you know it's. Man if there's not a linebacker out, there you know its. 00:41:53 Speaker 4: Zone all. 00:41:53 Speaker 9: Right i've just taken out fifty percent of the THINGS i have to think about motion the running back In, hey if the guy comes with, them you know it's probably not a. Blitz if the guy doesn't go back with, him you know that it's probably going to be a. Blitz, OKAY i again cut off all the information that you have to think about Where sam didn't have that. 00:42:10 Speaker 2: Experience but if you look at offensive, minds IF i said you could learn Under josh, McDaniels, McVeigh shanahan McVay Or shannan, oh not even. 00:42:22 Speaker 9: CLOSE i mean, This josh McDaniels is one of the, best no. Question but McVeigh And SHANAHAN i think HAVE i ever told you the golf story the first day THAT i was With sean And jared so One i've played Under. KYLE i was With kyle in like twenty ten and maybe two thousand and nine twenty ten In houston when he was quarterback. Coach offensive Coordinator Gary kubak was the head coach and Just kyle and his ability to install in the way that he talked about. 00:42:53 Speaker 4: Football kyle was his install. Meetings it was like speed. 00:42:57 Speaker 9: DATING i mean he would take ten seconds thence all play throw the paper on the, ground, install, play throw the paper on the, ground install play. THRILL i mean the way that he forced you to pay attention with his urgency was, different and just you could see the way that he talked about football from a defensive. 00:43:14 Speaker 4: Perspective he understood. 00:43:16 Speaker 9: It But sean McVeigh in two thousand and, seventeen it's the spring of twenty. SEVENTEEN i had just gotten done In. DETROIT i was In philly with my. Wife we were down in the city with our, family AND i had known McVeigh a little bit just in post. Games sean called me and he, Said, HEY i got this young, Kid, Jared jared go was going into a second. Season he's, LIKE i need you to come out. 00:43:39 Speaker 4: Here just be a. Coach you'll be our third. 00:43:41 Speaker 9: Quarterback you're not going to take a single snap in the post or the. Preseason you'll be our third QUARTER i just need you to teach him. Football he doesn't have a great understanding of. Football so all, Right SO i go out there for training camp AND i remember it's the very first. Meeting we're sitting in the front. Row it's the situation see in between me And. Jared it's the first team meeting of training. 00:44:00 Speaker 4: Camp hand To. 00:44:01 Speaker 9: God three minutes into the, MEETING i lean OVER i Tapped garrett on the knees AND i, Said you're gonna be, fine. Dude you could just Tell sean had a great understanding the way he could, communicate he understood, football his leadership, skills the way that he could control the room with his. 00:44:18 Speaker 4: Voice so just being. 00:44:19 Speaker 9: Around those two, guys not only their football, perspective but just their ability to. Communicate one of those two guys would be my clear. 00:44:29 Speaker 2: Favorite Tom, brady who has had a rapid rise in improving as an. ANALYST i think he got rid of the. CLUTTER i think he's doing what he did as a, quarterback get rid of the clutter and just talk. Football but he said something ABOUT jsn where he set his shoulder pads never like they don't, change, Correct so what's, that? Dude to what defensive bat. 00:44:53 Speaker 4: Everything looks the. 00:44:54 Speaker 9: Same it's Very Tory holt back in the day was the great at. This Marvin harrison is, well where you know when defensive backs study, receivers there's. Tails there's always tails in, football no matter if it's a big picture scheme thing or an individual scheme. 00:45:11 Speaker 4: Thing remember the Movie, invincible. 00:45:13 Speaker 9: When he's, like, hey white knuckles the, rusher there's always those. Tails there's always those individual tells as, players and so as a receiver your, alignment are you closer to the offensive tackle or the tight? End why are you moving down because you're trying to create space or are you further away because you're trying to go attack the middle of the. 00:45:33 Speaker 4: Field and then there's route tells where, hey if this. 00:45:36 Speaker 9: Guy comes off the line of scrimmage and he's standing, up he's probably going to be stopping on his route sometime. Soon if he's got his shoulders, down that he's probably trying to accelerate vertical and maybe going. Deeper and so these GUYS i have all these. Tails and WHEN jsn has everything looked the. SAME i mean we're across the street from the baseball, park, right and so when these pictures everything looks the same from a where's my, glove where's my wind? Up where's the ball coming out of the every so now you have such a smaller time frame to figure out. 00:46:08 Speaker 4: What the pitch. 00:46:09 Speaker 9: Is it's like that WITH jsn when he comes off the line and everything looks the same from his, stride his, tempo his. Shoulders as a defensive, back now you're guessing the four or five different routes that he could run six different routes he could run rather than. 00:46:25 Speaker 4: He could only do one of two. 00:46:27 Speaker 9: Things and as a great defensive, back then you could take away one of those. 00:46:30 Speaker 4: Things So, roddy that's his. 00:46:32 Speaker 2: Strength Rodney harrison was kind of auditioning to be On Football night In america and he was talking about because we wanted to, know, like what do you? See what are you looking? For he, said all, right, well look at this play With Tony. Gonzalez he, said you see where he's lined. Up and then he, said look at this other. Play you see where he's lined. Up, now it looked like the same exact. Formation he, says he's about three inches, wider he's going out for a. Pass. 00:46:58 Speaker 9: Correct just little things like there's always a tell, yeah if you put in the time to study. It and that's where we talk about the conversation of watching film versus studying. Film and that's why you see a lot of young quarterbacks it just takes time to. Develop is as a young, quarterback you more often than not you watch. Film they're playing cover. 00:47:23 Speaker 2: Three. 00:47:24 Speaker 9: Okay, now then you as you develop and evolve and be around and repetition your studying. Tape all, right they're in cover, Three but where's the weakness of the cover? 00:47:33 Speaker 4: Three or who is the weakness of the cover? Three or how DO i know. 00:47:36 Speaker 9: That they're not going to be In cover three and they're gonna go to A cover two or A cover. One that guy's outside, shoulder he's inside, shoulder his inside foot is up rather than his outside foot is. Up it's there's always. Tails the more you, study how did The patriots? Win great? QUESTION i think number, one they have to be phenomenal on early down on the interior of their offensive. Line every someone talks About seattle's defense and talks about their, front their defensive, front and they only correlate it to third. 00:48:05 Speaker 4: Down and it's great on third. 00:48:06 Speaker 9: Down but if you don't Handle murphy And Leonard williams early, downs you you can't have success against this. Defense and it's not just in the pass game you got. You you have to hit him on some quick hitting runs early downs to try. 00:48:20 Speaker 4: To get those two to play. 00:48:21 Speaker 9: SLOWER i think the second thing is you gotta handle the edges of their pass rush on third. 00:48:26 Speaker 4: Downs that's gonna be. 00:48:28 Speaker 9: HUGE i Think STEP's gotta have the biggest game of the postseason for, him not even. Close if you were gonna ask me the one person on their offense In New england that has to have a big, game It's STEPH nicki min worry is gonna Play. Nickel who's that interior pass game defender For. 00:48:44 Speaker 4: Seattle he's. 00:48:45 Speaker 9: Phenomenal he's gonna be defensive ricidier in my. Opinion he's six foot, three two hundred and thirty. Pounds, wait they already gave it to the guy In. Cleveland that's already been. ANNOUNCED i thought they. DID i thought it's Tomorrow Night. Honors, no, oh maybe he's a. Finalist he's a final. Sweassenger, yeah he's he should be a. Finalist, okay, okay BUT i believe it's announced to mon oh, okay all. Right for a, SECOND i was, like Oh, god that's gonna go. 00:49:10 Speaker 2: Viral, No, no you only go viral when you fawn all over these. 00:49:15 Speaker 9: QUARTERBACKS i don't understand What why do people want everybody to just say quarterbacks? 00:49:21 Speaker 4: Suck you know this quarterback. Sucks it's, like oh my, god do you. 00:49:24 Speaker 2: Have do you fall in love a little too soon with? 00:49:28 Speaker 11: QUARTERBACKS i always GO i always think THAT i go from the mindset of understanding how hard it is to play that, position and there's so many good players that Aren't. 00:49:43 Speaker 2: Patrick but if you were sending Out Valentine's day, CARDS i probably give. 00:49:47 Speaker 4: Him to eighteen to twenty. 00:49:51 Speaker 5: At a. 00:49:51 Speaker 4: Minimum, okay atam. Minimum all. 00:49:53 Speaker 9: RIGHT i don't, Know LIKE i always, Say, DANIEL i Think i've said, this And i'm, like this is just my. REALITY i think it would be so dumb and disrespectful and ignorant of, me who is a backup ninety nine percent of my career to just go on the probably the BIGGEST i guess on a day to day basis network and she's, like this quarterback. Sucks you wouldn't have any, respect you. Know that would Be how COULD i then go into A monday night football meeting and sit with that quarterback and be, like, so what's your game? 00:50:27 Speaker 4: Plan he'd be, Like you're an. IDIOT i don't have any respect for. 00:50:29 Speaker 9: You, so, yes there's a part of me that probably has a little bit of a find the positive, Perspective BUT i do think it comes from a level of just appreciation. 00:50:39 Speaker 2: Respect good to see, you great to see, You thank you for stopping.
