00:00:23

00:00:30
Speaker 2: The top and he was like, Yo, man, yo, rest of peace, Big pun I grew up with the Puerto Ricans, which show in Chicago. He was like, Yo, man, I want to do a song with you. Now at this point, I'm still.

00:00:42
Speaker 4: Really street, like really really street like.

00:00:47
Speaker 2: I didn't know no better, right, So I grab all Kelly by the chart said Yo, I'm not the guy you say you want to do it somewhere and then you can just do.

00:00:55
Speaker 3: It zero.

00:00:57
Speaker 2: No yo yo nah nah, Thank god I said it myself because I said, yo, listen, yo Tank, I'm that ghetto that's still street now that Joe be like, oh wow, that'd be a you know, an honor or what you know.

00:01:16
Speaker 3: Then I was like, yo, my man, no, be like, I ain't the one. I ain't the guy you want to talk to like that.

00:01:22
Speaker 2: She's like, nah, I'm gonna be in Orlando. Come down there. We do a song, this this that. Magically DJ bron G hits me up. I never even knew he made beats. He was like, yo, Joe, man, I made a beat for you. So I knew all these producers that made hits, but every time I asked him for beasts, say track Masters or whatever, they had all the hits, but they would send me they hard shit. So like if I would go to Tank, it writes hits, and I'd be like, Yo, Tank, I want to joint. I was so street. Tank would think of his one hardcourt jointing be like, Yo, Joe, I got one for you. No, I want to fucking hit. I want the barge, not sweat. You don't understand what I'm saying, so I'm just saying.

00:02:05
Speaker 3: I try.

00:02:06
Speaker 2: I tell you, I wouldn't know, yo, swearch you you know, I held the bars one of my favorite ever. But you know, I old the bars. That's my guy. But listen, so he go like this, so ron g we go by him. It gives us the beat. We play the ship. We start running away on the fucking truck because it's the beat. Till we dug it, We're like, oh, somebody gave us a hit something at least it sounded like a hit like because everybody else was just giving us shoot him up. They ain't that ship to marb Deeper rap to or m O P or you know, so I'm not because that's what I was coming out the gate. So we dancing. So I do my verses. We drive down to Orlando. Right all Kelly's laying on the couch. I walk up in there. Funny ship is the track Masters was there too. They was doing his music and so when I walked in, I'm like, Yo.

00:02:58
Speaker 3: What's up? Calls Yo up Yo this.

00:03:01
Speaker 2: He was just sitting on the couch and he said, he said, Yo, you got the song? I said, yeah, I got the song. And it's funny because he tried to talk. He talked to you like real light and shit.

00:03:11
Speaker 3: Like Yo's cows. You know what I'm saying. This that you know.

00:03:15
Speaker 2: Actually, I never heard him talk with bass. He always talked like smooth and ship right. So I give him the CD and he plays it and immediately he rolls off the couch and he grabs this.

00:03:28
Speaker 3: Recorder like a like a caller and goes, ooh.

00:03:34
Speaker 2: He does like the inchro like I don't know what he doing, but he thinking of the hook.

00:03:38
Speaker 3: But he's singing the ship right.

00:03:39
Speaker 2: He was like, yo, this ship is hah yo, you the fire whatever it was. Then he started mumbling some ship in the hook. Then he turned the ship off and he was like, and the track Masster is looking at me like, yo, Joe, I ain't know you can rhyme like that. I ain't know you can make hits like that. I was like, y'all've been telling you to give me the ship I have, but y'all y'all keep thinking I'm fat Joe against it, right, So funny shit is he does that? So I'm thinking, you know, all, Kelly's gonna sing the hook, We're gonna do it, and he.

00:04:06
Speaker 3: Goes, yeah, yeah, you know him, I got a two fake.

00:04:11
Speaker 2: I'm like, huh. He's like it was like two in the morning. He was like yoah, I got a two fake, you know what I'm saying. So you gotta, you know, go chill, We'll figure it out. This this that, I'm like, I drove twenty hours at the time. I was kidding you, So I drove down there too, so I'm like, yokels.

00:04:28
Speaker 3: He was like, I got a two fake.

00:04:29
Speaker 2: This this that, so out of nowhere, he disappears and walks out the room to a door through a door. So it's like ten minutes, twenty thirty forty minutes. Like I'm telling you, I'm really impulsive. I'm like, really really street. At this point, I don't know how to explained, so I said, man, fuck that, man, I go to the door.

00:04:46
Speaker 3: I opened the door. I opened the door. He dad ass got a dentist.

00:04:50
Speaker 2: Giving him nover can on a chair and in the fucking studio and like two in the morning.

00:04:56
Speaker 5: I found yo. Yeah, yeah, yes, yo tech.

00:05:01
Speaker 3: I felt so bad.

00:05:02
Speaker 2: I'm sitting there like this, I'm like, oh ship, he really got a tooth figures.

00:05:07
Speaker 3: I go because I noticed one record gonna change my life.

00:05:11
Speaker 2: This is a hit hit you know you got to hit with a Kelly at that time, It's just.

00:05:18
Speaker 5: Right.

00:05:19
Speaker 3: So long story short.

00:05:20
Speaker 2: The man don't call me for like two days, and I'm staying in like a motel and you know, Orlando, I'm writing, I'm working on my album, and then we're about to be I'm like, man, fuck him, man, we're going back up to the boss man. So we in the truck ready and out of no where, the phone ring. He's like, yo, what's up? Scales? Scales said, what's up?

00:05:42
Speaker 3: Kels? You're too good? Everything good?

00:05:45
Speaker 2: He's like, hold up and he pressed playing you hear we dougg and rolling and so off and then and that's why happened, man, And.

00:06:02
Speaker 6: And so that ship and that's your first R and B collaboration, my first hit, like my first R and B hit, I have to go to the record that So this is this is a record that is very special for me because it's one of the first songs that I learned how to sing as.

00:06:22
Speaker 3: That's what's friends are for? Wo.

00:06:24
Speaker 6: Yes, two of the records that I learned how to sing as a child. Where we are the world?

00:06:32
Speaker 5: Wow?

00:06:33
Speaker 7: Yes?

00:06:33
Speaker 8: Wow yes, And that's what friends are for?

00:06:39
Speaker 9: Yeah, two great songs.

00:06:42
Speaker 5: Great.

00:06:43
Speaker 6: How does it feel to have records like that? Like, like I like, I'm ting this is like the world is singing in harmony, in unison, maybe not the right note, it might not be singing.

00:06:59
Speaker 5: And you're gonna tell, how.

00:07:02
Speaker 8: Does it feel to have that?

00:07:04
Speaker 9: You know, when songs like that come along, they far and few between. They really are. Hear those songs or those kind of songs every day, and that's the reason you hear everybody singing, because it's not only words, it's meaning, it's feeling. It has you know. The song was written for a film Night Shift, and Rod Stewart sang thing but recorded it and I found it by watching or television was watching me. But the song at the end of the film woke me up. I said, oh, I like that, and I watched the crawls to see who wrote it. As it turns out, I'm getting ready to record it with Bert and Carol. I just left the house that day. They didn't play this song for me. And the next day when I went back, I said, you know, I heard a song called that's the principle all Why didn't you play that one for me? And Carol? Who is I mean, she's the funniest woman in the world, she said, real hooter. So now four people know that song, I said four.

00:08:46
Speaker 3: He said, now four people.

00:08:47
Speaker 9: Know it now, Rod Stewart, Bert Backrack, Carol Bear Stay your Backrack, and zl Walwick now knows that song. I said, well, this like the world knows the song because it's too good not to be heard. And I said, and I want to call some friends to be a part of this with me, because that's what it's about, friendship. And as it turned out, Elizabeth Taylor was at the session being a friend of Backcracking.

00:09:20
Speaker 8: Carol.

00:09:23
Speaker 9: Yes, you're there, wow, And she pulled me to the side. Dean, can I help you? Yeah, here, you can go. You know, I'm starting this foundation. I said, yeah, I heard, and it's something you need to do. And she said, well, I know how hard you're working within your community to get the people to understand what's going on with age. She would you consider giving me that song? And I looked at it like she had lost our mind. I said, give you a song. Yeah, that's the thing that needs to be heard that would get people to understand what's going on. And I said, well, let's ask those other three people in there, and Stevie, Gladyson Elton all agreed. You know if because we all felt the sting, you know, one way or another. And he said, well, if our time is going to make a difference, yare okay, but you got to cross the board. Writers, publishers, videographers, tapes, studio, everything, every dime made recording. Still to this very day goes sad far Wow. Five Davis called me said, did I hear right? Aid? Wait? Wait wait? Did you hear you gave everything? Yeah? Did you realize the pace record you're going to have in your lifetime? And hmm, yo, that listens the purpose of giving it away and get and I have reaped over and over and over and over. Yeah, ain't about the dollar, it's that feeling. And I feel very good about it, I really do. And I feel that in the long run, GeV Glas and Nelson feels exactly the same way you've done something, then nobody else has.

00:11:46
Speaker 8: Done something bigger than yourself.

00:11:48
Speaker 6: Absolutely congratulates absolutely, and thank you for the song.

00:11:53
Speaker 9: Yes, I'm glad I heard it on the way, heard me raised up in time.

00:12:00
Speaker 10: That's that's a that's a great phone calls to let me Steve Friends, Steve Wondering, Gladys Knight, l j Elton, John and Steve.

00:12:09
Speaker 3: While you at it. You got yourr you got.

00:12:10
Speaker 10: Your hard money, bring that harmony.

00:12:15
Speaker 7: Don't you show up here without it any long?

00:12:16
Speaker 9: He get that one to me, Yeah, he sure did. Yeah, after the session he hands you to me here, what Yeah, sure did. That's my baby.

00:12:28
Speaker 11: That's my baby, Steven, since she's nine years old.

00:12:36
Speaker 9: Yeah, that's my child.

00:12:38
Speaker 10: I want you to take to the camera, the front camera right there, Stevie. Get get here to the R and B Money podcast.

00:12:48
Speaker 7: Come on, No, I got a pet pee.

00:13:07
Speaker 6: If I hear one more nigga mentioned a three sixty that they know nothing about.

00:13:11
Speaker 3: They don't even know that means.

00:13:12
Speaker 7: You don't even know what it means.

00:13:14
Speaker 3: You just heard a nap about it. You you don't take a shot on that.

00:13:19
Speaker 6: You don't hate that ship, bro, They don't even know what it means.

00:13:22
Speaker 5: Listen, three sixty the master's.

00:13:27
Speaker 3: Do you even know how to license your master masters?

00:13:33
Speaker 5: They don't know.

00:13:35
Speaker 6: Talking to talk because they heard somebody said in an interview or rap about it in a song. And the nigga that you probably heard rap about it in the song probably doesn't own his masters because he doesn't know how to license.

00:13:49
Speaker 5: Them at all.

00:13:51
Speaker 4: If we gonna really have a real conversation.

00:13:55
Speaker 8: Like, bro, there's a means to an end.

00:13:59
Speaker 6: When you trying to get somewhere and you're trying to change your life and there are people in front of you that are life changers, you just have to make the decision for yourself.

00:14:12
Speaker 8: If it's worth it or not.

00:14:14
Speaker 6: I've never judged the next person's deal because we all here, we all be into music. But oh, you know they got five million? Okay, well what are the terms? Do you know the terms? Do you know what they signed four to get the five million? Do you know if that deal was in perpetuity? Do you know if they're ever getting anything back? Or did they sign their life away for five minutes? Did I just jump in a deal that maybe I didn't get a whole bunch of money, but I got the opportunity and I can work my way out of it.

00:14:45
Speaker 12: I'm gonna sign for thirty five albums. Nigga like, then he'll know what the buddies are for.

00:14:51
Speaker 10: Hey, my first deal could have been that. I was just like you white guys. Showed me that paperwork. I said, this is good. He said, yeah, that's good. That's cool.

00:15:02
Speaker 12: I'm telling you that's just wasn't even optional. My parents were like, you don't want to get a lawyer. I was like, yep, I'm the lawyer.

00:15:14
Speaker 5: Had nothing resembling a lawyer.

00:15:17
Speaker 3: And we're not saying.

00:15:21
Speaker 10: We're, you know, good lord, the good lord lawyer.

00:15:29
Speaker 3: Don't get a lawyer. Get a lawyer.

00:15:31
Speaker 10: We have good lawyers, don't. Yeah, but I'm just sharing that. I'm just sharing that. We share that.

00:15:39
Speaker 3: Like.

00:15:40
Speaker 5: I just felt like I gotta get to it.

00:15:44
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, forward progress.

00:15:47
Speaker 10: I gotta get to it. And and if if this contract is going to help me get to it, whatever is in it, I'll whatever is in it that needs to be cleaned up, I'll get to that.

00:16:00
Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll figure out.

00:16:01
Speaker 5: But right now I need to get cracking. I need to get off this bench and in the game.

00:16:05
Speaker 6: Right.

00:16:05
Speaker 3: I got make enough money to get somebody else to clean it.

00:16:07
Speaker 5: Come on, come on now, talk to somebody thought me out of this thing.

00:16:15
Speaker 12: Somebody give me out the facts and it worked out.

00:16:20
Speaker 3: Bro.

00:16:22
Speaker 6: I'm looking at this list here, brow, it's it's too many. You've been going crazy. You have been going crazy.

00:16:29
Speaker 5: Bro, Okay, you have.

00:16:32
Speaker 10: You have a few songs listed here, but I kind of want to go in order. What's your first hit record.

00:16:39
Speaker 12: The first song I ever heard in the car on the radio was one by K Camp and Fetty Walk. That's the first one I cracked for you. That's like the first year I signed to QC.

00:16:51
Speaker 3: And that, and they're not even through QC, neither K Camp or wasn't. So how did you land?

00:16:57
Speaker 12: I think he pulled up to work with Cebo and I was just like, let me see some beats.

00:17:00
Speaker 3: He got his number and send them to his phone.

00:17:02
Speaker 5: Still hustling, just hustle. I love that.

00:17:06
Speaker 3: I just to be chilling, you know what I'm saying. I ain't a lot of.

00:17:10
Speaker 5: You look like you be chilling, But nigga, you be plotting.

00:17:14
Speaker 3: Okay, so you okay, back to the money talk though.

00:17:16
Speaker 6: So now this is your first, you know, one of your first runers that crack off. At this point, what are you charging anybody outside of QC because you're signing QC and you got your deal with them, but like, what is your like was you doing the three hundred for the beat? Was you doing the five hundred? Did you jump fifteen off the off the porch?

00:17:33
Speaker 12: Like hell no, I was doing one hundred and fifty dollars leases And then three hundred dollars.

00:17:38
Speaker 7: Exclusive less m nigga.

00:17:40
Speaker 3: Do you remember the first time you heard about that? That shit blew my mind. Yes, it blew my mind. I was like, wait, wait, wait, wait wait.

00:17:47
Speaker 8: So they could sell it a couple of times to a couple of different artis.

00:17:49
Speaker 3: But if they want the exclusive one, yes, a little more.

00:17:52
Speaker 5: Yes, that's how I got to quit nigga.

00:17:56
Speaker 10: Listen ship they dove deeper into to music business. Then we've ever thought to go early early early. You're leasing a beat and you're gonna possibly use it multiple times on multiple artists. It's contracted, but if you want the exclusive, it's.

00:18:17
Speaker 3: Did any of those ever catch heat like the ones you were leasing? Hell?

00:18:20
Speaker 12: No, No, random hood niggas I would come across or like somebody would be like, my boy make beats and like or like niggas at Georgia State. I used to still like pull up to Georgia State and hoop and shit, like and like niggas in gym, you know, saying direct they're still trying to rap and shit. I'll be like, shit, I got some beats for you.

00:18:39
Speaker 10: But they were smart too. With the economics. If I can move one hundred of these one fifties. Yeah, fifteen thousand, thanks.

00:18:48
Speaker 13: But the thing that I felt that I lacked was the experienced one and and just the discipline that everybody else had.

00:18:55
Speaker 3: You know, it was B two K bow. It was so many other artists polished on here. Yeah, so when you.

00:19:02
Speaker 13: Would see their shows, you would see the glitz and the glamour. Like me, I had a DJ booth, just a little DJ booth that I was slide from under with the dancers with the little smoke, and then I had a graffiti background, you know what I'm saying. And they maybe maybe gave me like twelve minutes. I probably had like not even that, it might have been eight minutes. So I had to, you know, figure it out. But seeing these other performers, it kind of like grew my hunger for what I needed to be doing in order to in order to be the person headlining, in order to be the person that I think I can be, you know what I'm saying. So a lot of them, a lot of those guys, and seeing their performance, seeing their their quality and how long they're dancing and then they're just getting off and all the screens like it was really the screen tour like you go, it's no other It's no other experience that I can tell you. At that time was like forget all the festivals and stuff that they got going on right now. Back then your ears were literally you would really go definitely.

00:19:56
Speaker 3: Shut out to Michael Martin.

00:19:58
Speaker 6: I saw him during the Great I mean, got never met him before, and I just told him, I'm like, listen, man, what you did just what I mean, obviously what you've done in the business, pier, but that Scream Tour Jesus with giving that type of spotlight to young artists and putting him on that type of platform.

00:20:18
Speaker 3: I don't know anyone that's done that. I don't.

00:20:20
Speaker 4: I don't.

00:20:21
Speaker 13: I don't think it can be done right now, it's I think that sounds I can't even recreate.

00:20:27
Speaker 4: Like I was just happy to be a part of it, like I was.

00:20:29
Speaker 8: That's a legendary to recreate with these phones.

00:20:32
Speaker 5: Man.

00:20:33
Speaker 10: That's the other part, yeah, yeah, because because because like that stage was like still in that moment, it still was a place where you still felt like this is the only place I'm gonna get to see that.

00:20:47
Speaker 4: I'm only going to see this type of ship here.

00:20:49
Speaker 10: It was still that, but we hadn't gotten to the phone yet to where you could get used to singing that type of ship all the time. It just runs all day. That's them Scream Tour. It was really screams. Yeah, facts like motherfuckers. When you came on stage, it was they was glued from from from from top to bottom.

00:21:09
Speaker 13: And I was nervous because that's like, you know, we were performed before, Like I've performed at different places. I had to perform what is it playing in Hollywood? Different different places? But there's a little venues when you I'm in an arena now and it's even though I go on first, the parents back then they trying to get their kids into the building early. So now if the show starts at let's say nine, some people might not leave their house toil eight thirty, you know what I'm saying.

00:21:34
Speaker 4: So, but back then, everybody's in there, sitting there waiting.

00:21:38
Speaker 13: So whoever the first artist is, they either standing up or booing the shit out of you.

00:21:42
Speaker 6: Did you, like, speaking of booing, did you ever experience a fucked up.

00:21:47
Speaker 8: Show early on? Like early on?

00:21:50
Speaker 13: No, no, no, I'm gonna be real, like I've never got like a boo, like a bad Boo. I don't want to jinx myself, but I've never got like.

00:21:59
Speaker 8: A he's not your nigga, but.

00:22:01
Speaker 4: I've never I never got boot on a.

00:22:03
Speaker 3: Thousand hit records.

00:22:04
Speaker 8: But you're not getting don't worry about that.

00:22:06
Speaker 3: Almost I said, you almost got boo. It started off with this money. That's what fun His playlist was.

00:22:16
Speaker 8: The song wasn't working yeah radio so and he still wanted to sing it.

00:22:21
Speaker 5: Yeah, which we're working.

00:22:22
Speaker 10: It was it was spent seven hundred thousand. I started singing the songs little girls in the front row looking at her friends.

00:22:32
Speaker 7: And oh.

00:22:38
Speaker 11: God, I still got two minutes and it's ada tape. So that that you got, you just gotta live that motherfucking out you started. That's when you start thinking the most.

00:22:50
Speaker 5: So that's when I started sweating. That's when you get caught in the mouth.

00:22:53
Speaker 3: Man.

00:22:54
Speaker 13: Now, I sucked up myself on stage, like did the back flip slipped, But I play it off or like you know what I'm saying.

00:23:00
Speaker 4: Then stepped off the stage before and fell in the crowd.

00:23:04
Speaker 6: But yeah, they still feel bad for because you're just being great.

00:23:11
Speaker 5: Yeah, they still screamed.

00:23:14
Speaker 6: I say, okay, oh my god, Okay, so off the first off the first album, you start to you start to see what this thing is like. You start to see, you know, what fame is like, and how how you're gonna adjust.

00:23:28
Speaker 3: Did you ever have like the can.

00:23:31
Speaker 6: I do it again? Because you know people talk about the sophomore Ye sophomore jing.

00:23:36
Speaker 13: I had that in my in the back of my head probably every day, you know what I'm saying. So like, for me, it was because the first album was like a learning experience.

00:23:45
