I think there's over three hundred thousand people who live in Proper Pittsburgh, Proper or in the surrounding area. They had over seven hundred thousand for the draft all three days. Now, the weather certainly helped out, but that's a football crazy town. The weather was great, the atmosphere was wonderful, and Washington, d C.

Speaker 3: You're now on the clock for next year's draft.

Speaker 2: We focus on quarterbacks and it's the most important position in all the sports, and then you start to think about it's one thing to be a starter in the NFL, but it's another thing to be a backup quarterback. And we've talked about this before. There are certain backup quarterbacks that you say not worth it. You know, I go back to Colin Kaepernick, if he was going to be a backup quarterback, wasn't worth it. Tim Tebow not worth it as a backup quarterback. Too much coverage for my backup quarterback. Even Cam Newton if he was going to come back and he was going to be a backup quarterback, Johnny Manziel. You got to have a backup quarterback who you probably don't see very much. And that's a good thing. If you're one one of the McCown brothers and you're just there for fifteen years, Chase Daniel, you know, nice college career. You just want to make sure that guy is just there. In case, Colet McCoy, Diego Pavilla was a Heisman Trophy finalist. He did not get drafted. Now there's a few reasons why. He was very, very good in the SEC. That should stand out and that should make that should make you draft eligible. You should get drafted just based off what you did. You did it for Vandy in the SEC. You know, you could have personality at other positions. It can be absorbed, it can be embraced, but not a backup quarterback because quarterback is evaluated differently. You can be an elite talent and get away with that. A wide receiver you can be an elite talent and get away with that. Or a great defensive you know, alignment edge rusher. The message from the NFL is really clear. If not a can't miss prospect, professionalism is not just valued, it's required, and that hurt Diego pavia Also that he's not a tall guy. Most of your backup quarterbacks, if you check, are not short quarterbacks. Diego Pavilla might be five to ten, but you start to look at what you did in your pre draft meetings with team. Shudeort Sanders fell to the fifth round. It wasn't anything that he was doing on the football field, it was just personality. Fifth round Pavilla goes undrafted. He didn't have an agent, but you have Tbo, Cam Newton, Kaepernick, other examples of your backup quarterback being too much of a headline or potential for a headline. Pavilla is being invited a tryout with the Ravens. He wasn't signed as an undrafted free agent. He gets to try out. Now he's also friends with Johnny manzel That doesn't help, and you start to be little Indiana football Fernando Mendoza Heisman Knight Football moves on quickly, Yeah, you can be. Just ask Johnny Manziel. It moves quickly. It's like, oh, yeah, what are you doing now?

Speaker 2: Okay, check back in five years from now, probably not doing nothing again. But Diego Pavilla has a personality, but he does not have a personality that I want as my backup quarterback. I don't think he's good enough to be a starter in the NFL. You know, he's not Doug Flutey. Like Doug Flutey was five to nine Heisman Trophy Trophy winner, but he was the ideal personality to be a backup quarterback and ready to come in when need be. In fact, Flutey was ahead of his time. Flutey now Fluty would be able to play and play at a pretty high level but Diego Pavilla. The personality, that's who you are. You're selling that personality, but I'm not buying that. Teams are not buying that. Teams didn't buy shud Or Sanders. He came in, he didn't interview well. He seemed entitled, and teams were like, you're not a can't miss prospect. If you are, we can absorb that, we can try to smooth that over, or we can sell that as a come out and see this guy.

Speaker 2: Like Manziel in college was wonderful, and then I realized just how great Mike Evans was, and that's where you go. He certainly helped out Johnny Manziel be Johnny Manziel. But that personality, then your commitment is questioned. You want to party, you want to be a star. I have no interest in that. It's a tough enough position to play. It's tough enough as a coach to try to survive, to try to win. You're going to bring him into Baltimore. You do have Lamar Jackson and you have a new head coach and Todd Munkin.

Speaker 2: You know, maybe if it's Andy Reid with Patrick Mahomes. Maybe, but you've got to be really good. Are you going to be able to break down defenses? Are you going to put in the extra time to make the starter look better? Well, these guys have been catered to, pampered all their life because they've been the star. Now you're going to be a backup. I don't get to play. That's the life of a backup quarterback. You don't want to see me, you don't want to hear from me. You just want me to help the starting quarterback. And that was the brutal reality that Diego Pavia was handed over the weekend. He did not get drafted.

Speaker 4: Yeah, bone, he's one of those guys who probably should have stayed in college another year. If he could have scammed some eligibile He had two years of New Mexico State, two years of Vandy. If he could have somehow bought another year, no pun you could have got paid on al money. He'd be attractive.

Speaker 2: Yeah, but still, if this is who he is, I mean, you gotta be really really good if I'm going to take this on. And Kaepernick was a great starter, but I don't want what comes with that. Cam Newton great I don't want him as a backup Tim Tebow.

Speaker 5: Yes, doing It is surprising though, that a team didn't take a flyer on him in the later rounds when he sees some of the other quarterbacks who got taken lately. Nuss Meyer obviously went at the very end. He's got health concerns and if you look at the tape last year, I mean hard to argue with that season.

Speaker 2: No. I know, he's really talented, but you've got to be great. How much wich baggage do you have? That you know, whenever I see somebody falling and all you want to do. It's like wide receivers like Antonio Brown was unbelievable for five years, then all of a sudden, Antonio Brown's baggage didn't fit in the overhead bin. Now we have an issue here. A lot of these wide receivers, they'd be like, Okay, he's a personality, your quarterback, that's the face of your franchise, but maybe gets an opportunity somewhere kind of feels like he's going to be Arena League or UFL or whatever it's called. Now, maybe he gets an opportunity there, maybe CFL.

After the weekend with the draft, like, I'm okay, I'm okay. And you know what was interesting. If you have kids Christmas morning and they just start opening up gifts and you're like, wait, wait, wait, hold on, hold on, hold on, let just have some order here. That was Round one of the NFL Draft. It was your kids are just opening up gifts. You're like, wait, wait, hold on, and the pick is in, and here's the commissioner and the Brown select and then all of a sudden, it's like and the pick is in.

Speaker 2: Might have been a little too quick for me, And that sounds hypocritical because I probably was like, man, it takes forever. In the first round, Roger Goodell's first year as commissioner, first round was six hours. I think we were just under three hours this first round.

Speaker 2: I like it everything nowadays with sports, it's it's gotta move, gotta move, gotta move. You're competing with somebody's phone. It just felt like it was a little too fast, that everybody was opening up their Christmas gifts and you weren't able to follow what was going on, Like, all right, okay, wait, hold on, hold on at your sister's turn. But the hugs were really powerful and passionate. Do you think Roger Goodell's wife says, why don't you hug me?

Speaker 4: Did you guys find the first round on TV almost too fast where you didn't get enough breakdown of the last draft pick?

Speaker 2: Yeah, it was just a little bit, but I'd rather be faster than slower. And I know Mike Greenberg, who hosted for the Mothership, said, you know, maybe we should let the host call a timeout. And there's other draft picks that you want to talk a little bit more about. Well, the problem with that is ESPN's not the only game in town. There's other networks, other shows that are carrying the draft. So if Greeney goes, hey, I'd like to call a timeout. I want to explore a little bit more about why this happened. Well, then all the other shows got to go Wait, Greeney called a timeout.

Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that there should be something adjacent to the draft picks if you want to explore a little bit more with your team, and maybe you have somebody who will be there to give you maybe a little bit more of a synopsis on your player. Still feels like Sean McVay is answering questions about ty Simpson, and he's tired of answering questions about ty Simpson. But Sean, you can't convince me that you were grumpy about something else that was going on in your life.

Speaker 2: You can't be excited because ty Simpson's coming in and you of course have Matthew Stafford. I can't be excited we got this quarterback because I got a quarterback who's a Hall of Famer, and you might have been the best team in football last year. And if you're going to convince me ty Simpson that's a good pick. He might be the right guy, but at the wrong time, he's not going to help you this year. And if he does, that means Matthew Stafford's hurt. But if you are going to tell me that Kenyon Sedik or Mackay couldn't have helped you more, if you're Sean McVay, maybe there's a defender there. But if I can add a tight end who runs a four three forty, or I got Lemon who's a USC kid who was a tough runner after the catch, that to me felt like that would have made Sean McVay a little happier, but he kept saying no, no, no, no, no, you know we're lockstep me and Les Snead the g I'm gonna go okay, I'm not buying it because I would have been like, you gotta be kidding me, and we're you gonna take We're gonna use the thirteenth pick.

Speaker 2: It sounds better like if we got him at the twenty sixth pick, and then you go okay, which is what I thought they were gonna do. I thought that they would go at the very end of the first round and they would try to get Ty Simpson. But I would not be happy if I'm Sean McVay. Now, I would have been probably better at showing that I'm a team guy. But the fact that he was noticeably upset angry, I liked it because it was an honest moment there. Yeah, So that seemed to just hang over the draft and it still is going to and even in the offseason. And then I hear the Rams aren't out on Jimmy Garoppolo yet, Like I think they're trying to get Jimmy Glow dude still want to be with the team as a backup. So it was fun. But once again, Pittsburgh, you did a wonderful job. The audiences that came out all three days spirited into it, and I would think per capita, I don't think anybody. Maybe Green Bay buys more gear than those fans in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 11: Well, there's a lot of reasons to that. One, you know, smaller quarterback. I think the league is a little down on smaller quarterbacks right now. Two, when he had to play within the pocket, it's underwhelming to watch him in those those scenarios. He's not a high level thrower of the football. You know, he plays a style and is most successful when it's backyard type football. But yet he's not very fast either. And then he plays small and then also so on top of that, Dan, nobody wants to bring in their practice squad third string quarterback who likes to make headlines for the wrong reasons at times. And I think all those situations are why you know he wasn't drafted, Yes, or this weekend.

Speaker 2: I know I spent a lot of time Thursday and Friday on this story. And that's ty Simpson going to the Rams. Yeah, and I'm trying to understand the strategy of taking a guy for a team that might be the best team in football. With apologies to Seattle, but you're taking a guy who best case scenario doesn't help you this year and maybe not next year. So why taking that high given that I had a couple of offensive weapons. Sadiq was there, Lemon there, DeVante Adams is thirty four exactly, So help me understand the philosophy there.

Speaker 11: Those are the Seahawks and then forty nine ers. They're still cheering that they did. The Rams took Ty Simpson. I mean yes, I mean because you said it. They're the second best team in football last year. If I all do accounts, if they go to the Super Bowl, they're going to beat the Patriots. So they were a better football team, you know. So yeah, you looked at that pick thirteen, and I know the whole league, in the NFC West especially, it was like, oh my gosh, the Rams got picked thirteen. I think there was some thoughts there that they were like, oh gosh, I'm scared they're going to trade into the top ten and really get some splash type player to add to their awesome football team on top of that.

Speaker 11: I know it was an extra pick they had from the Atlanta Falcons trade, and they probably feel like they're playing with house money. But man, you're in a super Bowl window right now. Matthew Stafford's playing phenomenal football. Like you said, ty Simpson's a guy again, smaller.

Speaker 11: Anybody viewed him as a twenty pick in the NFL draft, And the league's a little down on those type of guys like I'm telling you about. And he hasn't played a lot of football to where now he's gonna sit on the bench and not play football for a little bit while longer. That's to me the part that doesn't quite make sense. And I'll throw this out there too, Dan, I mean, for a guy like Matthew Stafford, this is only going to motivate him to play it one more year extra. Oh you think you're gonna tell me when I'm gonna retire? And oh damn, you didn't want to waste a pick, like you said, mackay Lemon. I mean, Devonte Adams is not what he used to be and he's thirty four and he gets injured.

Speaker 2: You gotta have a face for the franchise. McBride is great. We're still waiting for Harrison to be something. You don't have a quarterback. He's too talented to pass up. I just don't know if that's the right team for him at the right time. And then you go out and you get Carson Beck later, who is probably going to see the field aside from Mendoza, Carson Beck is probably the next quarterback who's going to be playing this season.

Speaker 11: They wouldn't shock me, Jacoby Pressett, I expect them to be there be the quarterback. I think Arizona went like the route of like, we're not gonna make this all about the quarterback. Just because we need one doesn't mean we're just gonna pick one and one that we don't necessarily like high in the draft, like a Ty Simpson. I never got the sense they would do that again. They were a team that was kind of burned by the smaller type quarterback. I worked in New England with Monty asin for it. I mean the philosophical thought at the quarterback position in New England, and I believe Monty believes in that is that bigger quarterbacks that's traditionally what they had. I think that's what he believes in. Now where it's good Dan is this. This is Michae Lafleur. He's a run game expert, and he knows how to use them running back. Being from Shanahan, being from McVeigh, his brother up in Green Bay, trading for Josh Jacobs, adding him to the offense, They're gonna know how to use him, not only in the run game and the pass game. And then they got a decent O line. They got something forming here. So I think what they're kind of doing is just building the team and then hopefully next year they can strike while the iron's hot and finally get their quarterback of the future, but for now that wasn't there, and they went with the best offensive player on the board and the guy that has a chance to be Marshall Fauk if they can support them the right way with the team around him.

Speaker 11: Let me just say this right off the bat, because the Jets was phenomenal. Three first round picks. I like them all, I really and they're gonna help their football team. And it stays consistent with what the Jets have done all off season, which was signing veteran players that can make them good right now, because if they're not good right now, their butts are hot on the hot seat. There they got to make it work, and I think the guys they draft that can help them out right away. Now the Giants, of course, I love that draft. And this is where people are missing out on this Rbell Reese conversation. Okay, so r Bell Reese, yes, he has a chance to be Michael Parsons. But as we know, Michael Parsons played a lot of middle linebackers first year with the Dallas Cowboys. I know everybody's looking at it right now, going wait, they have pass rushers.

Speaker 9: I get it. Okay, Well, here's the first thing.

Speaker 11: The best everybody talks about Sonny Styles, and I tried to emphasize this on my christims On Button podcast, the best middle linebacker in the draft was all Rvel Reese. All right, So as freaky as everybody told you about Sunny Styles, he was the second best linebacker on his football team. Rvel Reese is the best middle linebacker to come out in football in quite some time. So you have that right off the bat, and that's where I think some giant fans are missing. So he's there, he's starting, He's gonna be phenomenal there and then they can slowly work him in cave On Thibodeau has one year left playing there, so he'll be the third rotational guy. It'll be Abdual Carter, it'll be Brian Burns, rvel Reese in the middle, cave on Thibodeau subbing in for the guys on the edge. Next year, rvel Reese will play a little bit more edge and they'll continue to infuse that to where two or three years from now, it'll be rvel Reese an Abdual Carter on the edge and we'll see where Brian Burns is. As you know, two or three years for a guy like that, it's a long time. So I love the Giants draft, but I love the Jets too, and I'd probably give the Giants the edge, honestly, Dan.

Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the Jets did a great job in drafting for next year that they didn't reach for anybody exactly. They're like, right, we'll figure out the quarterbacking situation. Let's just make the team better. And I go back to Bill Cowers quote when he was with me last week in Pittsburgh. He said, when we were getting ready to draft Ben Roethlisberger, we had already made ourselves a really good team. So the quarterback came into a good team instead of let's build around the quarterback and have him try to make like Fernando Mendoza. Yeah, I mean, hopefully they're building the team it's a good enough team that he comes in instead of saying, hey, you're the number one pick, go out there and be a savior.

Speaker 11: And see, that's the way I was trying to kind of explain to Arizona, and you said it a better way there. I don't think they weren't gonna the Jets weren't gonna be Oh, we're gonna reach and take a quarterback we don't like just because everybody says we need a quarterback. No, they're going way, we got Gino. Gino's damn good if you can help them out a little bit. Same with the Cardinals and Jacoby said, let's build the team and that arch Manning's there next year. Boom, he's ours, and he could come in and be really good right away because we got the supporter around him.

Speaker 11: History where you just said it, like we get the quarterback and you go, okay, but the rest of the team stinks. What. It doesn't matter if it's Superman or whoever, John Elway, they're not gonna be very.

Speaker 9: Good with this team. And I think we've seen this Detroit.

Speaker 11: Detroit took the let's build the team and we'll grow Jared Goff behind that. The Seattle Seahawks, what did they do. They It wasn't like, oh, Sam, save us Sammy. It was like, our team's good, let's bring in Sam. He'll help us out, all right. The Philadelphia Eagles they never made it like oh, it's Jalen Hurts and then we're gonna figure it out. They were like, damn, our team's good, and now we got Jalen Hurts and he'll fit into it. So I think that's the right approach. And I think too many organizations do quarterback before the team, and you're seeing one here where it's team first, like your point now.

Speaker 2: And I keep mentioning this probably ad nauseum, that is, these are the kind of drafts that you look back in two or three years and you say, how did that team get so good? It's because you're drafting players that aren't making headlines. They're not you know, sexy names exactly. You know, you're just like all of a sudden, you know, it's a puka akua in the fifth round and you're like, man, was he a first round pick? Like these are the things that I try to tell people. You can win later with drafts like this, totally, totally, you know, that's what I think the value of this is. Like, like the Chiefs quietly went out and I think had a good draft. They got defensive players, like they revamped their defense in one draft. Now you can say, did they go up maybe too high to get the defensive back?

The first round has become less about oh, this guy is awesome at this one thing, but he've got some other questions.

Chris Collinsworth was a student at the high school where I was the athletic director, and he graduated from here, the school on the east coast of Florida, and Chris, I'm so involved in our Hall of Fame induction and ceremonies and sat you. We do it every two years, and Chris is in our sports Hall of Fame, and his dad, who used to be our principal, is in the Hall of Fame. And last weekend we inducted Chris's brother, Greg into the Sports Hall of Fame, and Chris came and accepted on his brother's behalf who sadly passed away from cancer. And Greg was being inducted for being a standout player in basketball, way before the three point line was ever recognized. Greg was just truly amazing, and Chris was just so humbled and touched and so proud to accept this award for his brother Greg.
