Michigan is favored by one and a half against Arizona. Who needs cinderellas. These were great games. The Michigan Arizona game. You're gonna hear people say, well, that should be for the national title. Well it's not. You know, it's like Seattle against San Francisco or you know, hey, that should be for the Super Bowl, but it's not. Now USA Russia for the Olympic gold medal, but it wasn't. It was the previous game. Illinois is you know, you got to watch them, And this is what happens with some of these schools. You're kind of forced to watch them because they're the ones playing in these big game. Illinois not a fluke. They are a big team, good team, got a really good coach. And you know, watching that game against Iowa, they're relentless. And you know, I look at Yukon. I don't think this is a great Yukon team, not even a really good team. It's just a team and sometimes that's all you need when you get to this point in the season. And Danny Hurtley's done a great job. You know, I don't think they have a go to guy, and they hung in there. You're down fifteen against Duke. You don't lose. Duke doesn't lose those games, right, Yes they do. It was nineteen points at one point in the game. And then you start to look Duke's last four losses. Led by fourteen against Houston in the Final four, lost, led by seventeen against Texas Tech, lost, led by thirteen against North Carolina, lost, led by nineteen against Connecticut yesterday and lost.

You want the ball in your ball handler's hands and they had that. You know, do you panic in a moment like that? Yes? Uh? Do things are?

Uh, you start to look at okay, did you try to go over the top? Could you go over the top? You're trying to If you get it over the top, you get a dunk, the game is over, or worst case scenario, let them foul you, or you know you don't want to get the possession arrow then all of a sudden, Connecticut is going to have more time on the clock. But you can't call time out. And you know, I'm sure John Shire said all of those things to his team in that last time out. But here is the head coach of Duke starting with the question.

Speaker 7: Well, yeah, you just we just have to secure it, right, I mean, we got it, they had to foul. I was ready for a timeout and we just got to hold on. And you know, it's easy to look at that play. You know, I look at every play that happened, especially in the second half. This is not about one play. It's about every play to put us in that position. And that's what you don't want to do, where one play something can happen and so for me, look, it's it's going to be tough, but it's not gonna be on one play.

Speaker 2: And he's right about that. Give Connecticut credit for staying in that moment. You're down fifteen, you're down nineteen, but you're chipping away little things, rebounds, turnovers, points off turnovers. That was the difference. Duke played a perfect first half, perfect and when Charles Barkley said I don't see Connecticut coming back, I go, Connecticut's gonna win this game. Because Charles is never right on his bets. But they hung in there and this is how it sounded. Here is the Duke call on the game winner.

That was just a long jumper for a kid who in high school, made about forty seven percent of his three pointers. He was one of the mister Indiana basketball players. And you know, twenty years ago he doesn't end up at Connecticut, He's at Indiana. But boy, times have changed and you start to look at the list of great players that Connecticut has had and has nothing really to show for it. Duke, I should say Jason Chatum's Ion Williamson, Cooper Flag, Polo Bankaro, Cam Boozer, Khan Kinnipple, RJ. Barrett, cam Reddish, Marvin Bagley. You know, I think it was probably ten years ago when we had coach k On and I said, you know, would you rather have the one and done or have the guy who's staying there three or four years? He said, you can't pass up the one and done. And this isn't necessarily an indictment on the one and done, because you can't pass up Zion or Cooper Flag or the Boozers. But you do need those seasoned guys, you do, and I think you know Yukon's approaches. Let's get one of those guys and then we're gonna have guys who are going to stay two or three years or maybe four years with Red and you do need that. But it was fun to watch, you know, because it was halftime and I thought, I got to find something else to do, and let me watch the golf. And then all of a sudden, flip back and I go, all right, they get it to like seven, and then they got it to seven, and you get it to five, and then all of a sudden, it's three. Now, all of a sudden. That's where you wonder when we talk about comebacks, how much energy do you have once you get back and you're tied or getting really close. It takes a lot of energy to get to that point. You're down fifteen, you're down nineteen, nothing's going your way. You're not shooting well at all. Yukon was five to twenty three from three point range, out rebounded by six, and they still won. But what three of those five came in the last couple of minutes. Those were the big ones. And Braylan Mullins Darren Ravel, who keeps track of these things, said that the basketball from that shot may be worth up the three hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Well, I wonder where that ball is. I don't know how you get it. See it's weird, is it yours? Well, it's just Basketball Hall of Fame, and it's one of those shots that's going to be worth a whole lot more if Duke wins or a Connecticut wins the national championship. By the way, there's so many people who had no interest in either team, probably except for please don't let Duke win. That's it. It's not necessarily Hey, I'm rooting for Connecticut. You're rooting for Connecticut because you're not rooting for Duke. And I started to wonder, is there any other school and it's a tribute to Duke that you know, notre Dame Football Yankees? Who else do you throw in? The Cowboys, the Lakers? Maybe where you just don't want them to win? And it feels like Duke is above all of them. You know that we can't agree on anything as a country, but I think for the most part, people agree. They don't want to see Duke succeed. But this isn't a team you dislike. I mean the Boozers, I mean Shires. You know, there's nothing antagonistic or not wild or crazy like Dan. He's not polarizing. It's just the history and it's a testament to that brand that it still resonates. People don't dislike Notre Dame like this. I mean, you like their head coach, The Lakers, Okay, the Yankees they haven't won, you know, Cowboys, they haven't won.

Speaker 9: Yeah, Paulie, I think it's one hundred percent right. Duke is at a different echelon of people enjoy watching them lose. No matter who it's to. You just take the other side because they really haven't had a long term dip. The past ten years haven't been great, but it's not a dip dip.

Speaker 2: We will talk to Seth Greenberg for the Mothership. He'll stop by watching Michigan. Michigan in Arizona, Man, they don't mess around, even though Arizona wasn't making their threes. But Michigan with Dusty may So in his last four years, he brought Florida Atlantic to a Final four, brought Michigan to the Sweet sixteen in his first year in ann Arbor. Now he has the Wolverines in the Final four. I did reach out to a college source. I said, hey, what are the chances that these two coaches coaching in the Michigan and Arizona game are one of the two is going to go to North Carolina, and I was told that as of late last night, North Carolina doesn't believe that either one will be leaving their schools. North Carolina is still not sure about the Kansas situation. They don't want to lose a great candidate. Billy Donovan is still in focus on their radar North Carolina, and as my source said, he has not said no. And people he listens to won him out of Chicago. Sure, there's probably some others he's not listening to that won him out of there. But yeah, so that's as of late last night, my source. You start to look at the largest blown leads in tournament history. Iona Blew a twenty five point lead in twenty twelve to twenty two point lead in two thousand and one, Cincinnati in twenty eighteen to twenty two point lead West Virginia, five twenty point Tennessee, and seven twenty points North Carolina. This year's tournament nineteen Duke, this year's tournament nineteen stat of your day, sat of the day, that past stat of the day, stat of the day year comes that what stat of the day. But you know, with the advent of the three pointer and you know, the proliferation of three pointers taken in a game, you get that opportunity to come back because if you make them, you can make the comeback, and if you're missing them, you allow for the comeback. All right, see what's poll question for the first hour of the program? Is the classic right here? Mm hmmm, Duke blew that game? Or Yukon won the game? Oh, Duke blew that game. I mean, you can't be up by nineteen and then forget how you got up by nineteen because they played defense. They were so great on the perimeter plan defense, and then all of a sudden they forgotten. I was told yesterday during the game North Carolina is playing not to lose in the second half, and it felt like Yukon and maybe Danny Hurley just said, hey, just keep going, chip away, chip away, chip away, chip away, hang in there, and you know, then they ended up getting those rebounds and points off turnovers were huge for them. And then all of a sudden, doubts starts to creep in when you have a nineteen point lead and all of a sudden it's single digits. Now, all of a sudden, you're going, wait, what's happening? How did we get here? How do we hold on and survive? And it was too late? It felt like now, granted it took a miracle turnover and three pointer, but you allowed Connecticut to have that moment where they could win the game, and they took advantage of it.

Speaker 10: Tay and run the ball to your hands. Be strong with the basketball, catch, turn and face. Let's make sure we have good space, and let's not bring too many guys into the back court. If we get trap, let's have a man behind the ball, and then let's have a man come to the middle of the floor. Catch, turn, face, look up the floor. All right, be strong with the basketball. If you can throw over the top and get a layup, that's fine. If not, just be strong with the ball and work to get open. Right, don't stand, don't post. Work to get open where you want to catch the ball.

Speaker 2: Okay, Now, what is Danny Hurley saying to his players.

Speaker 10: We're gonna try to get one good trap. One good trap. We're gonna try to shoot the gap on the reverse pass. If the ball comes to the middle of the floor, all right, we're probably gonna give a foul. What happened and it's really interesting, and then you know, we want to give a foul early enough when we have a chance to get to the basketball back. Ideally you want to foul Patrick Gamba or we want a foul Sar. They're the two worst free for shooters. The ball came back to sar actually, and they were a little late getting to the trap, and you could see a little push at the end of it. Once you threw the ball, you fish so passed on that. I thought it was interesting that Memory who missed the free throw also got the deflection that created the turnover. But those are the things that you're saying, Like, you know, Dan said, look, we're going to pressure to pass. Let's force it to the corner. Boozer did a good job of catching it what I call him slot. We got to the trap, good job of getting rid of it early. The pass Cayden was right on the money. They had great spacing, they had people behind it. They did everything right.

Speaker 10: You know, I feel for Caden because you know the kids had a monster season with all the injuries that they went through. The one thing, when you catch it, you turn you face before you put the ball on the ground. And what he did was as he turned, he put the ball on the ground. So now to make that pass he had to collect the ball. By that time there was hand pressure on the passer. They get the deflection instead of just catching fighting the pressure waiting for the foul. I mean, it's hard for both of us because with that one play and John Set said it, sixteen old puinto turns. In the second half, the Connectic kid out score dude sixteen oh second half eight to two on the glass. First half, dude get fourteen point second chance points. That's where the game was won. And that's what the relentlessness of Ukon just chipping away, chipping away, trying to make a play, and eventually they make four the last five threes.

And you know, Mullins give him credit. You know, he gave up the ball, but he was ready when he got it back. But I thought Hurley, you know, coaches loved to micro manage, and I thought, you know, he might try to call a time out.

Speaker 10: But it's almost like, you know, you got a broken field, you know in football, I mean like there it's a scramble situation. So basically, the two guys on the deflection, they had two defenders behind the play because the two guys that they were gonna.

Now, Alex Caravan and I go over to watch those guys practice all the time, so I'm there a lot one of the great winners of all time. But how about the poison Alex Carbery, he just knocked down a three, they get the turnover, Moms passes it to him. He could have let that fly, but he had the poise to say, no, I'm gonna throw back.

His release on that shot was picture freaking per I mean, his release looked like it was Rick Mount back in the day. I mean, it was absolutely beautiful, and the poise they had in that moment was really impressive.

Speaker 10: You are your habits, and all coaches are like John Shire, I've been in their film session John Shire before a game where they literally go over NBA late game situations and he quizzes his team on what were you thinking there? What was he thinking there? Why did he make this city? So, I mean they're covering that. But Dan Hurley on the other side, if you've been to his practices, he challenges every single possession every single day, and there's an accountability every.

Speaker 10: Standard that he sets, which is an unrealistic standard. But those guys buy in and absolutely love the guy and they play for him.

Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's got juniors and seniors on that roster and Mullen's being the freshman they're talking to at Greenberg of ESPN. Let me start with Michigan and that's a that's a grown up team, man, that's a great team.

Speaker 10: Yeah, they only played one freshman as well. Their old physical, tough, long athletic, can shoot it, share the ball, excellent passing. I mean, like you think about the short of season, I think they won like fifteen to six.

Speaker 10: They were playing high major games, top twenty, top ten games, and they were treated them like guarantee games, man, I mean they will win them by twenty points.

Speaker 10: They were kicking the people's asses, and I'm surprised that the team that whose asses they were kicking should have gotten like one hundred thousand dollars. Check is a guarantee game. I mean, they were just they were just dominating people that people settle and you get into the league play. You know, obviously Duke got them, but think at the front cart dey Mara seven four wings span, yax, Lenneberg seven four wings span, A three that can shoot, the three, pass, make plays. Morris Johnson carves out space. Kido has been absolutely terrific. You got Gail, you got Burnet, you got me. They've got so many different pieces. But the way the ball moves and the energy the ball has, and then their ability and their length defensively, man, I'll tell you watching them yesterday was like watching a clinic. Look watching a highlight tape. You know, you prepare for a game, you have a highlight tape of plays that you want your team to see. That's what the whole game was like yesterday. It was incredible.

Speaker 2: And I've watched Illinois throughout the year now, not religiously, but I've watched them almost like every seven or ten games, you know, and you know they're big. They got they got the kids from the Balkans. I mean, and I don't know if that's the future. Everybody loves to go, well what is the future? You know? Are you going to get those players and bring them in? And everybody else is going to do this? I don't no, but Illin so many of them. Yeah, Illinois is not one of those Cinderella stories. In Illinois is a really really impressive team.

Speaker 10: Yeah, they got a lot of witches on their team with a v not a beat. I mean like they got a lot of itches. I mean, and those guys know how to play. And they're older. I mean, you know Vich's brothers, they're older, Markovic they're older, Stayakovic they're older. They've been coached hard their whole lives. They're highly skilled, they're about winning, they're about embracing roles. And then you got like bos Wall and Wogler. I mean, like Wigler, the way he just the poise he played. He looks like to me and maybe I'm wrong, Jay Bills thinks he's uh tyreus Halliburton, especially when he set that step back three where he kind of got himself behind the line.

Uh they've got legitimate size, they've got legitimate bet. They can bring Hummerkows and Davis you know times off the bench. They're a really good basketball team and are really well conceived and a really cool story because Brad Underwood.

Speaker 10: You look at Kartchenkov is like for the Michigan game, Like defensively, they they you know that matchup is going to be really really interesting because uh he can guard absolutely anyone. The physicality of the front court and the matchups in the front court in this game is they're going to be absolutely incredible. I mean, it's only way to describe it's gonna be incredible. This is this is a NASWEL championship game. This is a game that both teams are going to get up and down. This is a game that's going to be fiercely competitive. Tommy Lloyd, this is calm when when Caesar rough as anyone I've ever seen. I mean, like we were there when Iowa State went on fourteen oh run. I grabbed them after the game. I said, Tommy, fourteen oh one, you didn't call time out? He said, Uh, I'm not a very smart coach, but they need to sometimes figure stuff out on their own. His poise as a coach is incredible. He deflects everything. It's about the kids. He's a you know, he's a byproduct of of Mark Fu, but he also does it his own way.

But his son is a physical player, Like he's not like his dad and his and Pasia looks like he can still play. It's like he came out of the stands to, you know, hug his son. I'm like, Pasia could probably play for Illinois. Some of those guys on Illinois looked like they're Paysia's age. Yeah, Pauli.

All right, we touched on Tiger Woods just a little bit and he was having a good week because if you go back to Monday, we were talking about, you know, TGL the finals and he's going to show up. He's going to take some swings. Now people talking that maybe he's going to try to play at Augusta, So there was some momentum there. Now, he didn't play well when he took those nine swings, but you know, he's the focal point of TGL. So anytime you can see Tiger play in the ratings, probably quadruple just because Tiger was playing in that. Otherwise we're probably not watching. But Tiger's in it and Rory, you know, those are the headliners here. So he's got this momentum, all right, Tiger getting some swings in. There was a picture of his private jet in Augusta recently that maybe he was going down there, going to walk the course. Maybe he's going to play a little bit there. Maybe Tiger was going to play in Augusta. And then there was Friday afternoon, all of a sudden, you get a report that he's in a car accident. His car rolled over. Well, we know what happened when it rolled over before where he had multiple fractures in his leg. Thought he might lose his leg. We've had moments, we've had incidents. This one felt a little different from the standpoint of It was two in the afternoon going through an area where I think the speed limit may have been twenty five and car rolled over, got out of the car on his own, and he took a breathalyzer. He hadn't been drinking, but wasn't going to take a urine test or a blood test, and so they take to the jail. Sew, you have to be there for eight hours. And then you start to look in the mug shop and you go, that doesn't look like somebody who Okay, you haven't been drinking, but you don't have anything else in your body. So this has been a pattern, and this happens. It's weird to say, in fairness to Tiger, but you have all these surgeries. They give you all these meds. I've had many, many, many surgeries, probably ten, and I do my damnest. Knowing my personality, I can't take those things because I know boy'd be easy, you know, with my personality addictive behavior, I could grab that. And I understand that I have had friends who have had back surgeries and all of a sudden, you know they're crunching percoset. But that his body can look like it's ready to go and play in the NFL. But that face that looks like there's a lot of things going on with Tiger. This has been going on for quite some time. You're driving and you know, once again, when you drink or when you do drugs, you don't think that you're impaired or that somebody's gonna notice some of the great liars are drinkers, drug addicts. At least they try to lie to you. But Tiger can't lie to himself anymore. People can only say so much or do so much. Maybe his new girlfriend can help him, but you know she's got children. Can you imagine if Tiger's driving her children and it's in the afternoon in a neighborhood, that's what was. It's sad, But you know he's lucky he hasn't killed somebody himself included. And you're just you're watching this and he's such a powerful brand. Everybody wants to tell Tiger what Tiger wants to hear. You surround yourself with people who are yes people. But when he was going leaving the jail and they have that picture in the suv, he is just a sad, sad person. But he's got to want to help himself. I mean, that's the first you can say something to somebody having you know, had a father went to AA. It took a long, long, long time, and I'm proud that he went, but he went at the end of his life, but he did go. You know, you're just trying to get somebody who can connect with him or go with him because it's tough to do it alone. But you're watching this unfold and this is not the way it's supposed to be. But man, addiction will touch anybody. It does not discriminate. I don't care how much money. People will say, well, why aren't you driving? Got a driver? Well, sometimes you're hiding stuff that you don't want your driver to know. And that appears to be what's going on. But yes, should he have a driver? Yes, yeah, Paulin.
