Episode 90 - Warp Travel in the 40K Universe for the Imperium

The 40k Lorecast

On Today’s cast we cover how warp travel is performed by the imperium in the 40K universe. We open with how a warp travel functions, as opposed to FTL drives. We then get into the addition of Navigators and Astropaths to the experience of travel, and some canon conflicts therein. After that we move into the Gellar fields, so as to avoid being in the movie Event Horizon. We then dive into warp travel itself, the experience of those doing it. Then we close out with coverage of how the galaxy is segmented, and the great Nexus Automatica

[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the Forty K-Lorecast.
[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome to Forty K-Lorecast with me, John Barside and Brad Chester.
[SPEAKER_03]: This guy.
[SPEAKER_03]: On today's cast, we're going to cover the movie event horizon, basically.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're some people, well, things went really well for a little while and then we went, hey, we're going to do some warp travel and then yeah, just watch if that horizon.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, there's this gap between warp travel and Geller field.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's not a great gap.
[SPEAKER_03]: So we're going to be talking space travel in the Forty Kay universe today.
[SPEAKER_03]: Super fun topic for those of you who've played either road trader, comes up in that.
[SPEAKER_03]: I played in Piero Fleet Gothic, which is actually doesn't call it the lot in it, but it's covered.
[SPEAKER_03]: There's a few different games.
[SPEAKER_03]: This is covered up in, but most of this is covered actually in the novels in a little bit in the code X's.
[SPEAKER_03]: I find it super cool though.
[SPEAKER_03]: So this would be a really fun cast.
[SPEAKER_00]: But we can get some really good background for it too.
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, because they had the original game, I'm actually talking the video game.
[SPEAKER_03]: The one on the game.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, the one on the one on steam.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's good game.
[SPEAKER_03]: I get to a little repetitive at a certain point, but it's still it's fun.
[SPEAKER_03]: I was talking about the actual the miniature table top.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, the vision of the school and then it became X-wing cough cough.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, the Forty-Klorcast is a weekly podcast focused in the lore of the Warhammer Forty-K universe releasing every Monday at seven PM Eastern time.
[SPEAKER_03]: As always, please follow and comment in the cast.
[SPEAKER_03]: It does help our algorithm out a lot, reaching a lot more people.
[SPEAKER_03]: Thanks to all of you are doing it.
[SPEAKER_03]: I do see the comments again every single day.
[SPEAKER_03]: I have to go in there and read the comments or some really good ones in there.
[SPEAKER_03]: Lot of like me feeling good about myself because someone said something I said was funny and also a lot of little moments of like, hey, you can't pronounce this word.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: In the show notes below, you'll see links to our Patreon, our YouTube, our Discord, and our merchandise site.
[SPEAKER_03]: Patreon is there for people who want to support the show.
[SPEAKER_03]: We have a tier.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's four dollars in nine, nine cents a month or whatever that translates to in your currency.
[SPEAKER_03]: If you do that tier, you get the show ad free, but you can still listen to it on Spotify and everywhere else.
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, we added in, we know some of you don't love the ads.
[SPEAKER_03]: Sorry, so if you want to do that,
[SPEAKER_03]: add free for you.
[SPEAKER_03]: We also now have a YouTube for now.
[SPEAKER_03]: The YouTube is just our old episode that I have gone through very painfully and added content to images, subtitles, etc.
[SPEAKER_03]: Those release every Friday at seven a.m.
[SPEAKER_03]: but we have a new show coming out in June where we'll also be talking with the history of the Warhammer Forty K game table top, which I think will be really exciting.
[SPEAKER_03]: We're expecting at first release near the end of June.
[SPEAKER_03]: Probably shouldn't announce things before I recorded them, but screw it.
[SPEAKER_03]: We're doing this.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was just gonna say that's never stopped this before, John.
[SPEAKER_03]: Right now the pressure's on.
[SPEAKER_03]: So now I'll actually get it done.
[SPEAKER_03]: Lastly, of course, link to our Discord.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's completely free server, design for our listeners in mind, gave you guys a place to interact around the cast itself.
[SPEAKER_03]: But more importantly, about the kind of the overarching, forty-k universe, literature, gameplay, video games, memes, random nerd stuff, et cetera.
[SPEAKER_03]: We were over eight thousand members a time of recording.
[SPEAKER_03]: So, please, if you like what we're doing and you're looking for a place to interact around it more, join the discord.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about the fact that space has a lot of ready for it space.
[SPEAKER_00]: There we go.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, the Milky Way.
[SPEAKER_03]: I haven't checked my math here, but I'm pretty confident.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's ninety nine point nine nine nine nine nine percent open space.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is great in the movies because there's always so much stuff going on.
[SPEAKER_00]: And in actuality, there's so much distance between everything.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, even in like the asteroid fields and stuff like that, the asteroid field, you can accidentally stumble through and hit absolutely nothing.
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah, it just goes straight.
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah, it worked.
[SPEAKER_03]: They're not flying asteroids all over the place.
[SPEAKER_03]: We didn't just blow up all the wrong.
[SPEAKER_03]: So the majority of the action in the game, though, obviously it carries these tiny little specks in the universe that are the planets, but the universe itself is all open space.
[SPEAKER_03]: And we don't talk about that a lot, so that's what we want to talk about today.
[SPEAKER_03]: Today, we're going to focus kind of on how the imperium travels and moves around the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_03]: but specifically the imperium because the elder obviously have the web way which we've covered the tyrannids use their narwhal system that kind of gravity well them across the galaxy the necrons have phase shifting which is also their own thing the orcs have a combo a bunch of different things basically they just
[SPEAKER_03]: Believe, baby.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they put their thumb out and they just hitchhike wherever they have to.
[SPEAKER_03]: The towel don't travel their stuck because they tried traveling and it did go well.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think didn't go well might be a slight understatement.
[SPEAKER_03]: Everyone likes to lose.
[SPEAKER_03]: I think it was a third or half of the entire force.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was the, it was their next sphere.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they look like a tiger thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: They be a person.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they took the champagne bottle and hit the ship and went, we'll see you guys soon or never.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then the vote, and the other one too, I do want to talk about the vote, and we do have, we do know how they travel.
[SPEAKER_03]: But as we said before, we're not going to cover the vote, and until GW goes as a second codex.
[SPEAKER_03]: And we're doing for the codex.
[SPEAKER_03]: I drop in everything else right now.
[SPEAKER_03]: My guess is the vote, and it'll be up for the summer.
[SPEAKER_00]: And what do the travel before we just get into healthy and period travel?
[SPEAKER_00]: You have to remember in the forty-k universe, being able to get places is the main way to be powerful.
[SPEAKER_00]: The only reason that warp travel made the imperium, the imperium.
[SPEAKER_00]: other people.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the elder dominated for until they crashed themselves because they had the best means of transportation.
[SPEAKER_00]: They could they could go anywhere they needed to right now take care of any threat before it was a threat.
[SPEAKER_00]: And anybody that hasn't, we've looked, and we did a cast about a lot of these other alien races that had really, really powerful technology, but they didn't have the same ability to travel, effectively, move around the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_00]: So we were able to just isolate them and eventually beat them down.
[SPEAKER_03]: The last group I should also mention is chaos.
[SPEAKER_03]: So chaos does a combo of both.
[SPEAKER_03]: Chaos travels in a variation of the way the Imperium does, but also chaos theme is news to peer anywhere.
[SPEAKER_03]: So again, today's time.
[SPEAKER_00]: Still, it's still warp travel and still warp air quotes.
[SPEAKER_00]: Did you know I'm in particular?
[SPEAKER_03]: But they've got a little loophole.
[SPEAKER_03]: So today's actually in next week's cast is going to be about the Imperium.
[SPEAKER_03]: So let's go through this.
[SPEAKER_03]: So the real reason the age of strife was just so bad for humanity was actually not the cybernetic rebellion or the rise of psychers.
[SPEAKER_03]: It was the fact that the war became impossible.
[SPEAKER_03]: And it just cut them off completely from themselves.
[SPEAKER_03]: So no travel means no trade, no support, no reinforcements, et cetera.
[SPEAKER_03]: We don't have numbers, obviously, but millions of worlds and systems collapse.
[SPEAKER_03]: We do know it's not, isn't that?
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they get isolated.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because a lot of the worlds, they didn't do it as bad as we do now.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, sorry.
[SPEAKER_00]: And now, when I say now, is now, you're, you know, modern, modern, modern, okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm saying, these worlds were still not complete insanity where they, you produce one widget.
[SPEAKER_00]: But like, they, they did start to specialize and they had, because they knew that they could get there with whatever you need.
[SPEAKER_00]: The other thing, it's not just travel in this.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was travel in communication because you were sending through.
[SPEAKER_03]: Although we're going to come.
[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to cover that in a bit because I'm actually not a hundred percent if that's accurate because the... There's partly because it depends on how you travel.
[SPEAKER_00]: During the age of, let's say, the dark age of technology, they had, if you've go with everybody in the straight-enders game, they basically have an answer for that.
[SPEAKER_00]: instantaneously.
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, he heard that was a really good movie.
[SPEAKER_00]: I swear to God, if we were at his house right now, I would call him for kick-downs.
[SPEAKER_03]: For those who don't know, like, there's things that everyone has that's burned them in life.
[SPEAKER_03]: The Ender's game movie has done has shortened Brad's life not as much as his own heart and brain have, but he definitely did take a chunk out of it.
[SPEAKER_00]: My favorite book.
[SPEAKER_03]: ever.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: All right.
[SPEAKER_03]: But let's dive into space travel.
[SPEAKER_03]: So we've covered this before.
[SPEAKER_03]: So so let's be a little bit quick.
[SPEAKER_03]: Man kind started out with just sublight travel.
[SPEAKER_03]: Massive vessels loaded with cryogenically frozen people and all the resources you could ever need just heading off to colonized world.
[SPEAKER_03]: And they would take multiple year could even decades.
[SPEAKER_00]: These real century trips sometimes.
[SPEAKER_00]: But really, because they were called.
[SPEAKER_00]: They had a couple that were the century shit.
[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then those ships never came back.
[SPEAKER_03]: And they went, yeah, it's not, but not a best work.
[SPEAKER_03]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: Because this is a galaxy that is where like the average distance between stars is five light years.
[SPEAKER_03]: So this became Sicifi and pretty quick.
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, just because the closer the closer systems five light years away,
[SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't mean there's a planet there.
[SPEAKER_03]: You can colonize.
[SPEAKER_03]: It might be ten light years, fifteen light years.
[SPEAKER_03]: And we say sublight travel.
[SPEAKER_03]: We don't mean just off the speed of light.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's fast and twenty knots.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're popping the sale.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's do this.
[SPEAKER_03]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not growing fairly quickly, though.
[SPEAKER_00]: God, FTLs, which is fast on the light travel.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but they weren't.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's the big thing on this.
[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't.
[SPEAKER_00]: Star Trek travel.
[SPEAKER_00]: They weren't going to warp twelve.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
[SPEAKER_00]: They were going, this isn't forever to travel, but it's still a pretty hefty travel.
[SPEAKER_00]: Also, these ships had to be ready.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's just a lot that can happen.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's very, very open.
[SPEAKER_00]: You've got a lot of things that can go down.
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, and then let's talk about where we're really here for, so the movie event horizon.
[SPEAKER_03]: So the warp drive is invented.
[SPEAKER_03]: And for instance, those who don't know, the movie event horizon is not an official GW movie by any stretch, but everyone who sets, yeah, I'm surprised it and gets sued.
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it's that level.
[SPEAKER_03]: The event horizon is probably one of the best examples of what happens when you jump through the warp without a gather field.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they're trying to fold space.
[SPEAKER_00]: And because what they did is they went with instead of doing good Necron fold space travel.
[SPEAKER_00]: They went, hey, we're going through the warp.
[SPEAKER_00]: And what they didn't know is the warp isn't a super friendly place.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they also did not have any defenses against what they were going to find there.
[SPEAKER_00]: So we had some
[SPEAKER_00]: proves that showed up with some bonus, some bonus when I got done with the job.
[SPEAKER_03]: There were some issues.
[SPEAKER_03]: So let's talk about the work kind of in itself.
[SPEAKER_03]: So the warp is the inverse of our reality, but it's not a one to one flip.
[SPEAKER_03]: So because the warp has a different shape structure and there's no laws of physics there.
[SPEAKER_03]: So the reason, and this is where it differs from event horizon, when you can you can enter the warp at one point.
[SPEAKER_03]: drive a very short distance and exit the warp and you could move a thousand light years in that time.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's not clean and it was because this is designed to exist outside of the laws of physics.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's not all that easy as a way to explain because it's not linear.
[SPEAKER_03]: The way they did it into that horizon was it basically drew a dot on two sides of the paper.
[SPEAKER_03]: They did it.
[SPEAKER_03]: Then they folded it and they went, hey, what if we went right through it?
[SPEAKER_03]: That's close-ish, but still that's far enough off that, you know, again, it's not a forty-came movie.
[SPEAKER_03]: The way I like to think about it is that every point in the warp corresponds with a point in the, in the material, but there are chaotic relationship.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's sometimes they're super close to something.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's not because they were doing the Einstein Rosenbridge and have an horizon.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's more of, I'm jumping into a different reality.
[SPEAKER_00]: Steward, you're going to the upside down.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, just some stranger things, Mojo.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the thing is, is that it's not just distance that you can, as you can just show up someplace, but also because laws of physics don't apply.
[SPEAKER_00]: Time also doesn't apply in this.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you can have a wildly different trip each time.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now we've kind of figured it out.
[SPEAKER_00]: Ish.
[SPEAKER_03]: Not really.
[SPEAKER_03]: No, honestly.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, we've kind of because they jump.
[SPEAKER_00]: They do this that they continue to use work travel.
[SPEAKER_00]: So we've kind of show you.
[SPEAKER_03]: We laughed a little bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's most of the time.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's two to three weeks and we'll talk about this in a little bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes it's not.
[SPEAKER_03]: You're like hey.
[SPEAKER_03]: Sometimes it gets pretty ugly.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, sometimes, hey, man, I made the, I made the castle run and super fast.
[SPEAKER_00]: And other times, you're like, hey, man, it's a thousand years later, which we have two stories of that.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's actually a twelve hundred years later.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so what I based it off is in the writing is a relationship between the material and the immatarium and the Brad's point where you can enter at certain points and you know you exit at this other point, but to Brad's comment,
[SPEAKER_03]: The time that takes will vary, sometimes a little bit, sometimes a lot, and a lot of this depends on the movement in the warp.
[SPEAKER_03]: The warp itself can shift, but the main thing there's about warp travel is it can reduce travel times by upwards of seventy five percent.
[SPEAKER_03]: Or more, really, in addition.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a big deal with the warp because they have warp routes is basically
[SPEAKER_00]: We went through this semi-direct path, and you could cut more time off, but then you would be going on something that no one else has gone.
[SPEAKER_00]: And when they say warp routes, they don't mean, like, hey, this is a road we're traveling.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, hey, we've had multiple ships go this way, and they came out again.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
[SPEAKER_00]: We have a real low bar for success.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're traveling more than ever.
[SPEAKER_00]: Did everyone die?
[SPEAKER_03]: No, cool.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's it.
[SPEAKER_03]: But call that a success today.
[SPEAKER_03]: But travel on the warp is blind for regular humans.
[SPEAKER_03]: And this is because the warp has no real form.
[SPEAKER_03]: So when you're in it, you can't see out of it.
[SPEAKER_03]: There's nothing there.
[SPEAKER_03]: And there's no landmarks that base it off of.
[SPEAKER_03]: So this is effectively for those anyone who knows how to sail.
[SPEAKER_03]: This is sailing at night under full cloud cover with no moon.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and no compass.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so you have no idea which direction you're going.
[SPEAKER_03]: And where I like the ceiling reference, because I like to think the warp also has, it's sort of, they do don't have winds.
[SPEAKER_03]: What really happens in the warp is the better examples I saw is when you enter the warp, it's more like you're actually under the water.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so as the water shifts you shift.
[SPEAKER_03]: So you don't feel the push or the pull, you just go with it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Again, through all one of the things on this though, because you actually can affect your trip in the warp by your heavy emotions, which is one of the biggest things, because, oh, no, this is this broiling crazy thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody on the ships terrified.
[SPEAKER_00]: And all of a sudden it gets way worse because you actually affect the warp again with your, the warp.
[SPEAKER_03]: It gets excited.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yep.
[SPEAKER_03]: to that point, the original warp travel becomes tough because you go into the warp and the warp is shifting.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's moving around you.
[SPEAKER_03]: And as it shifts and moves you, you don't realize this.
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, just like the example I use is that if you're standing on a planet that's a spinning at a thousand miles an hour or a sixteen hundred kilometers per hour of people who have a logical measuring system, they don't realize this ridiculous legacy.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you don't realize it.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so what happens to a lot of ships is they would enter the warp and then they would just get turned completely off course, but they have no way of knowing that's happening.
[SPEAKER_03]: In addition to that, there's also the gods of chaos and demons everywhere, which is probably a bigger deal than just being turned off course, but you know, it's a bigger deal.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's kind of a bigger deal.
[SPEAKER_00]: If getting turned on course makes you go to the Garden of Nurgle, you're going to want to be back on course.
[SPEAKER_03]: So let's go through the history of this.
[SPEAKER_03]: So the first warp drive is invented around N-A-Teen and it's going with Ish.
[SPEAKER_03]: And it's possible, by the way, that this may have actually been what led to the dark age of technology, because mankind for the first time now is entering the warp.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's never, they've never done it in their history.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, let's just say now they're doing it.
[SPEAKER_00]: The warp is, if the cascads are starting to go up and that you jumped in there and went, hey guys, what's going in here?
[SPEAKER_00]: You're just poking the bear going.
[SPEAKER_03]: When I just pointed out, you're sailing by.
[SPEAKER_03]: We'll get to more of this in America's life.
[SPEAKER_03]: So the first work drives allow for what are called blind jobs.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so the ship would affect the aim itself in a direction, it engages the work drive.
[SPEAKER_03]: As the work drive, all it does is it, I like to term translates.
[SPEAKER_03]: It takes you out of the material and puts you in the material at that point.
[SPEAKER_03]: Kind of like it, what's the legend of Zelda on Super Nintendo where you would go to certain points you flipped to the other world?
[SPEAKER_03]: Is that or a kind of time that was on at sixty four.
[SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, that's how I think it would translate there.
[SPEAKER_03]: Once you're there, you then have to engage your regular engines and then you would drive for a little bit, but you're blind.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so it's the example I used here is like submarines.
[SPEAKER_03]: So this is how early submarines would navigate.
[SPEAKER_03]: It might still do it by the way.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, when I first read this, would you send it over to me?
[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, we're going to get some some same end that are going to just roll you for this, but continue.
[SPEAKER_03]: All the terms you could have used, that's the one you went with.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yep.
[SPEAKER_03]: They're called.
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, really Uranus.
[SPEAKER_03]: is that I'm sure there's Uranus, there's a bunch of Uranus, there's absolutely, I'm sure we have people who are in the Navy who want to correct me on this and I will sing that song back at you when you do, but the submarines are the same thing, a submarine can't see out the front, so they have to follow tectonic maps and they just ping the whole time, then the other submarines go, I'll just shoot torpedo at that noise.
[SPEAKER_03]: So they actually have to navigate based off time and distance and speed.
[SPEAKER_03]: And that's how they calculate.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's effectively how these only work drives function once they were in the warp.
[SPEAKER_03]: They would get in the warp and they would turn the engines to a set amount, they would clock it.
[SPEAKER_03]: And at the end of that clock, they would translate back out of the warp.
[SPEAKER_03]: The issue with this is it was insanely dangerous.
[SPEAKER_00]: These guys were just maverick cowboy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, man, what are we doing?
[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to go into hell effectively.
[SPEAKER_00]: They did no idea and try to cut some time off this and hope for the best you're like.
[SPEAKER_03]: Wow.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so it was done and what we call a leap frog pattern.
[SPEAKER_03]: So all the jumps would go in and all the jumps were less than four light ears was the distance.
[SPEAKER_03]: You jump in, you come out and then what you're out, you can actually see, you figure out where you are in the galaxy, move a little bit, make an adjustment, go back in.
[SPEAKER_00]: One of the reasons they did this is because it was very inefficient for a work travel, but
[SPEAKER_00]: because of the fact with no Gellerfield and they didn't know anything about the work at the time, really.
[SPEAKER_00]: It did limit their time in the warps, so they had less time for terrible shit to happen, which made it so they didn't lose everyone every time.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's not that they would let it get so far off course.
[SPEAKER_03]: They could buy themselves ten thousand lighters.
[SPEAKER_00]: Cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm just saying they at least in messing up.
[SPEAKER_00]: They at least didn't get everyone murdered by defense effectively.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's true.
[SPEAKER_03]: Because we're at a point where there's only three of the four chaos gods and the ones who do exist, they're grasping the immatarium is still growing.
[SPEAKER_03]: Today, you enter the warp.
[SPEAKER_03]: You are instantly bombarded by chaos.
[SPEAKER_03]: At this time, they didn't.
[SPEAKER_03]: And I have my own theory on that, which I just don't think anything in the warp thought something from outside the warp could enter the warp and kind of vice versa.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's part of the new and exist though.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you, right now I'm pretty sure I'd be pretty surprised if something from another dimension showed up.
[SPEAKER_03]: This came, yeah, roll and pass.
[SPEAKER_00]: Roll by my house.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, man, Kathulu just showed up for a second, driving a drop-down car like what?
[SPEAKER_03]: Now we're getting to navigate this.
[SPEAKER_03]: And this is an important moment I talk about how you translate into the work.
[SPEAKER_03]: What happens is,
[SPEAKER_03]: Warp travel is not like Star Wars and Star Trek, where you punch in your calculation and then you jump.
[SPEAKER_03]: You have to use something called a mandival point.
[SPEAKER_03]: And the reason you have to use a mandival point is that the translation of the warp creates an ebb and flow.
[SPEAKER_03]: It basically creates a gravity well for lack of a better phrase, not that the similar from the tyrannid like Narhal.
[SPEAKER_03]: This distortion of gravity can have catastrophic events if not done with precautions.
[SPEAKER_03]: For example, if you were to translate into the work and you've got a bunch of static objects around you like satellites, asteroids and other types of things, they would get pulled in and they could either just destroy you as they kind of come into you or you could translate into the warp with them as part of you.
[SPEAKER_03]: In which case, you break apart inside the warp.
[SPEAKER_03]: I look at kind of like a warp transition like a replicator from Star Trek, where it's just, it's going to take something break it out of an atomic level and then reform it, right?
[SPEAKER_03]: It's more of a teleport from Star Trek.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so if a foreign body is present when you translate into the warp, that foreign body is going to be part of your body when you come when you're on the other side of it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it is a replicator as much as I like the fact that these two things exist in the same
[SPEAKER_00]: at the same time, they almost overlap.
[SPEAKER_00]: I like the upside down reference quite a bit because they exist in the same space almost because the warp has its own topography, but it's supposed to be a reflection, but it's this chaos infused and reflection that just makes everything crazy.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so, there are to avoid this, but we use some of called mandival points.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so the mandival point is usually on the edge of the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_03]: For example, it's only past Pluto in our solar system.
[SPEAKER_03]: And it's not even just a specific spot.
[SPEAKER_03]: Work, that's a work date.
[SPEAKER_03]: Those are different.
[SPEAKER_03]: This is something where your far enough out is nothing there and you can jump to it.
[SPEAKER_03]: So on almost every system, once you get out beyond the furthest ring of a planet, that would be the mandival point.
[SPEAKER_03]: The exception being when you build a giant gate inside Uranus, that damn it.
[SPEAKER_03]: I knew we were going there immediately.
[SPEAKER_03]: There's no way I'm skipping this.
[SPEAKER_03]: But it can put a giant entrance and eggs in Uranus.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, these are set gates and things.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's why, for instance, let's do a lot of people would have asked in the cast, though.
[SPEAKER_00]: Why didn't Horace just jump right on top of Tara during the Horace, seriously?
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because you may or may not end up in the middle of Mars or just destroy yourself instantaneously in your entire fleet.
[SPEAKER_00]: going through the work isn't precision science.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's around here.
[SPEAKER_00]: Also, like John was saying with the manifold points, you go through these points that other people have used and you know that they work otherwise you're just hoping for the best and you could.
[SPEAKER_03]: Because the other thing too is with the mandival points, if I enter the work at point X,
[SPEAKER_03]: But instead of doing that, I drive an extra, I don't know, a thousand miles, and then enter.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's not linear into the work.
[SPEAKER_03]: I could mentor in a whole different part of the war.
[SPEAKER_03]: So you also do have the mandival points are preset things.
[SPEAKER_03]: From a strategic standpoint, the mandival points are very helpful because
[SPEAKER_03]: First off, you can organize planetary defenses around them, because you know where everything's coming in and out of your galaxy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Which is the tale of the Imperium, though, with every place that we know people come out of.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is also why the demonic incursions sometimes are so lethal is because all of the regular chaos ships and anybody else traveling the warp.
[SPEAKER_00]: We semi know where everybody else is going through.
[SPEAKER_00]: And these are the exist of the highway.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then we just put it on and guns around it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And we say, hey, if you come out here, be prepared to be pupued.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it also works well because usually the planets closer to the sun or the warmer ones.
[SPEAKER_03]: So the other ones are going to settle.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then if you have a nice system, like what we have in Seoul, we're going to have a junk on the exterior.
[SPEAKER_03]: Keyes people outside.
[SPEAKER_03]: although I do have to point one little thing out that the distance between mercury and Pluto is three billion miles or five billion kilometers.
[SPEAKER_03]: So there was a moment where like we've opened the system and then apparently drive for six weeks and then you get to solve.
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think get out the highway and then drive for weeks on side roads?
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, if you're going a million miles an hour, it would, let's do that mathematically.
[SPEAKER_03]: It would take you, yeah, it would take you five million hours to get from Pluto to Mercury.
[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm not a hunt, no surprise the GW math here isn't perfect, but I bring it up.
[SPEAKER_03]: The flip side though is that the mandival points are also pretty dangerous and they're very dangerous because all the pirate fleets also know where they are and the jukari fleets and really anyone who wants to hit you what they'll do is they're going to hide on the dark side of a planet or moon and asteroid whatever it is near a mandival point.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then when you come out, they're going to jump up before you're ready.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so the translation out of the warp into the material is super dangerous because it's usually because you don't know exactly where you're going to show up.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're not ready at all.
[SPEAKER_00]: Also, everything's kind of like batting down the hatches when you're in the warp.
[SPEAKER_00]: You've shut down everything except for your astronaut path as far as
[SPEAKER_00]: what you're looking for your sensors and everything else.
[SPEAKER_03]: And on our next cast, we're going to talk about the Imperial Navy.
[SPEAKER_03]: And this is one of their main jobs is to clean this kind of stuff up because you do get ships jump in and they get immediately assaulted.
[SPEAKER_03]: The jucari love this, by the way.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's one of the best ways to get that they want you a good slave run.
[SPEAKER_03]: They'll just because they'll have a web way near a mandival point.
[SPEAKER_03]: And that's just a bad combo for not the jucari.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: So we get lightning precision and you get groggy.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know where I am.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sounds good.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: So I said, we're just going to rate that ship.
[SPEAKER_03]: Take all the people back and no one's ready to know we were here.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, basically.
[SPEAKER_03]: The whole thing we were talking about before, though, is blind job.
[SPEAKER_03]: So people are coming in and coming out, not really knowing where they are.
[SPEAKER_03]: So they're kind of jumping in at a man to the point, readjusting possibly driving for a while in the material, going next man to the point and jumping.
[SPEAKER_03]: around it.
[SPEAKER_03]: This is funny between M ten and M twenty two.
[SPEAKER_03]: We're discussing earlier about how much this swings, but it's more close to M eighteen and twenty.
[SPEAKER_03]: The first navigators appear.
[SPEAKER_03]: They basically came right after the invention of the warp drive or two thousand three thousand years after it's injured will Robinson.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, basically the emperor made them.
[SPEAKER_03]: We said the prior cast my viewpoint is like the entirety of forty K advancement in travel feels like the emperor going like hey I made you guys this thing going oh crap I forgot about this one piece then making that one goes oh crap for about that piece and making another piece.
[SPEAKER_03]: All right now you guys are good Alex is worst dad still Yeah, so the navigators quick
[SPEAKER_03]: refresher their humans, but they have a mutation where there's a third eye in the middle of their forehead.
[SPEAKER_03]: But the third eye doesn't see the world around them at all.
[SPEAKER_03]: It actually pears into the immatarium all day every day.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, well, you're not even doing that justice.
[SPEAKER_00]: So their third eye can see into the nightmare realm.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, when they close their third eye, good to hear, still can see into the night rail realm at all times.
[SPEAKER_03]: I would sub navigators as being, yeah, they're not the most mentally stable group because the constant looking into the immatarium, even when they're sleeping, isn't fun.
[SPEAKER_03]: And I also believe the Emperor whipped them up in the lab real quick while cooking other things.
[SPEAKER_03]: I think he was working on his, like, brilliant.
[SPEAKER_00]: And by buying the emperor's cooking, navigators are on the back burner, just trying to chill while he's making everything else.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's just like, oh, yeah, they're on the back burner.
[SPEAKER_03]: He's making dinner with Hayes.
[SPEAKER_03]: Are we gonna have a salad?
[SPEAKER_03]: He was up.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, sure.
[SPEAKER_03]: Top up some lettuce.
[SPEAKER_03]: Here you go.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's the navigators.
[SPEAKER_03]: They look like such an afterthought.
[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm assuming it's because he was annoyed when he realized no one else could see into the warp like he can.
[SPEAKER_03]: And when I'll find, I'll make another human.
[SPEAKER_00]: I do love on the side down to this.
[SPEAKER_00]: We said it before, but it just cracks me up that I feel half the problems that the Emperor found was he was always kind of annoyed that everybody else wasn't a all-powerful psycho in a mortal.
[SPEAKER_03]: You're like fine.
[SPEAKER_03]: We'll get the Geller feels in a second where he was like, I don't care if there's a demon next to me.
[SPEAKER_03]: I just obliterated with my mind and it's like, oh, you all get eaten by them.
[SPEAKER_03]: All right, now I don't mind.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'll fix those two.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now you're just destroying it.
[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, why wouldn't you also just project the power that you have so no one actually comes to you?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Which is effectively what he did when he rolled in there when just went, anybody want a piece of this and they all went, not really.
[SPEAKER_02]: No, I'm just trying to terrifying actually for all of us will be right back after a quick break.
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's talk about navigators.
[SPEAKER_03]: Navigators barely look human.
[SPEAKER_03]: And this is, well, that's not fair.
[SPEAKER_03]: They can look anything from a human with a third eye to, is it toxic Avengers?
[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe that.
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, that's how far we're going to go into what they can look like.
[SPEAKER_03]: Or something created by a miraculous comment they look like.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to give this one a little bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think we did this.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they were already messed up, but to make them better navigators, we kept tinkering with them.
[SPEAKER_00]: in not a great way.
[SPEAKER_00]: But like, as time has gone on, we haven't exactly treated the navigators super awesome.
[SPEAKER_03]: We'd hide them to a ship and say, look out the window and tell me where to go.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's the thing is they also go, hey, I noticed that you have a hard time between the warp and the reality.
[SPEAKER_00]: How about if I just put you in this chair at a box?
[SPEAKER_03]: So you don't have to worry about what's in reality.
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, let's talk about that.
[SPEAKER_03]: Share in the box is kind of funny.
[SPEAKER_03]: So once as I said before, when a regular ship translates into the warp, the entire human crew just see nothing but like colors and darkness, kind of a combo of both.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's all I got.
[SPEAKER_03]: The navigator can see almost everything in there.
[SPEAKER_03]: Which means that they may be sitting there looking at slenetious palace and basing travel off.
[SPEAKER_03]: Alright, don't go that way.
[SPEAKER_03]: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
[SPEAKER_03]: Turn left.
[SPEAKER_03]: Anyone seen rally racing left?
[SPEAKER_03]: The third degree's left now.
[SPEAKER_03]: This is massive because the navigators can actually also see the movements of the warp.
[SPEAKER_03]: So it's not just, oh, hey, we're about to drive into Nurgle's garden.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's not going to be fun for anybody.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's even more, we're caught in a stream.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's moving us about seven to ten degrees.
[SPEAKER_03]: Of course, of course, correct back this way.
[SPEAKER_03]: This means the ship does stay the course within the warp allowing it to actually exit at the point in that to exit.
[SPEAKER_00]: I like it a lot because the best of the navigators actually know how to use the Evan flow of the warp to make it so they're traveling fast quicker.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's why the best navigators are, it's why you have those navigator houses we talked about that in a couple.
[SPEAKER_00]: like the best navigator house is producing the best navigators are just gold and super powerful.
[SPEAKER_00]: The difference between navigators.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not, these guys aren't all the same.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, just plug and plug.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: You have varying navigators and we'll talk more in the next cast about like much of having navigators, what ships don't.
[SPEAKER_03]: The main piece that if I say about the additional navigators is that we went from warp jumps of five light years or less to jumps of dozens, few, I think, hundred or thousand year warp jumps.
[SPEAKER_03]: This changes everything because now you actually can expand out into the galaxy rapidly.
[SPEAKER_03]: And remember, translating into the warp and translating out wasn't that dangerous at this point.
[SPEAKER_03]: There are no tear in it.
[SPEAKER_03]: There's really no orcs unless you go pretty far.
[SPEAKER_03]: Necrons are all asleep.
[SPEAKER_03]: Drew Carrier is still part of the elder art.
[SPEAKER_03]: The elder I do in their thing.
[SPEAKER_03]: There's no vote, and yet there's literally no towel, and most importantly, there's no chaos.
[SPEAKER_03]: You do have random Zenos as we've covered, but that's a random thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're so small and comparison though, because they can't see so big and there's such pockets.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: But when the emperor rose to power, they took this transportation and they exploded.
[SPEAKER_03]: Where the navigators are a little bit more convoluted is the navigators can see into the warp.
[SPEAKER_03]: They're probably going to see out of the warps a little bit goofy.
[SPEAKER_03]: And when I say goofy, it's because over four years of GW writing, there's been a little bit of a back and forth on this.
[SPEAKER_03]: All beings with a psychic presence can be seen from the work.
[SPEAKER_03]: Psychic presence manifests itself in the material, and all warp entities are aware of psychically powered non-warp entities.
[SPEAKER_03]: They may not be able to track them at all times, but they're aware of their presence.
[SPEAKER_03]: And the greater the manifestation, the greater it is.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so we have this with like Eldar.
[SPEAKER_03]: We talk about, you know, a slenish can find Eldar really easily, because she can sense where they are.
[SPEAKER_03]: She just can't manifest herself in a way to grab them.
[SPEAKER_03]: Navigators are a bit of a weird one because I don't think Navigators can do that.
[SPEAKER_03]: But if you put a lot of psychic energy into one area, the Navigators can see that area like a psychic beacon.
[SPEAKER_03]: And you also by the way can obscure it with blanks.
[SPEAKER_03]: which is what the Astronomicon was, which is invented around M-thirty, which is worth funny about this, the Astronomicon.
[SPEAKER_03]: This is where this whole thing gets a little bit convoluted.
[SPEAKER_03]: We have the Golden Age of Technology, so the Golden Age of Technology, we have navigator traveling throughout the work, all this stuff.
[SPEAKER_03]: There is no Astronomicon.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, uh, by the way, starting period fans on this, I think the Astro NamaCon is bananas overblown because you had these guests already doing it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe the warp is we got more and more convoluted because of the presence and active interference of the cast gods.
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe that's why it's needed now because the cast gods are actively trying
[SPEAKER_00]: to make it difficult and destroy people and have their ways basically.
[SPEAKER_00]: But, I mean, there's two other things you could say, but like one of the arguments is that the Ternan saw that, like, go up like a flare.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's also the other.
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, the other one is the other.
[SPEAKER_03]: The other means started it.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: The ultramarine started this.
[SPEAKER_03]: And now the Ternanids are rushing into the galaxy, staring at the astronomical.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going, that looks delicious.
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's go there.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I can see that pretty clearly.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: One of their piece I do have to crap on with the astronomical of that it before I'm doing it again now is this is in the writing GW refers to the navigators using the astronomical to triangulate their position in the warp.
[SPEAKER_03]: The thing with the word triangulate is the first part is try as in three points, not one.
[SPEAKER_03]: According to GW, you can triangulate your position off of one point.
[SPEAKER_03]: And I'll be honest, you might be able to do
[SPEAKER_03]: Distance because you could tell a light but not degree unless the astronomical in every micro degree around it.
[SPEAKER_03]: It makes a different color.
[SPEAKER_03]: You'd never be able to do this.
[SPEAKER_03]: And there's no compasses in the work, which is why any of us listen to cast lungs up.
[SPEAKER_03]: I refuse to call it North because there isn't one.
[SPEAKER_03]: There's North.
[SPEAKER_03]: There's South East West, baby.
[SPEAKER_03]: There's just up.
[SPEAKER_03]: So that's the thing about the astronomical that I won't let go.
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's go into what happens next.
[SPEAKER_03]: On set of great crusade, the Imperium outfitted their ships with navigators and turned the astronomical up to an eleven.
[SPEAKER_03]: At this point, these are doing routinely doing work jumps of five thousand light years.
[SPEAKER_03]: Even some longer have been done, but those were all emergencies.
[SPEAKER_03]: There's more to this than just getting in and out of the work at the same time.
[SPEAKER_03]: This is about I mentioned earlier I wanted to get to astrapats.
[SPEAKER_03]: So
[SPEAKER_03]: with humanity spreading across the galaxy into tens, hundreds, thousands and more of light years apart.
[SPEAKER_03]: We have a new kit.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's not just we're not just spreading out.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're on a military crusade to conquer the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_00]: You need to know what's happening with your forces that are now all across the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_03]: So what's interesting about this is that we have no idea how this was done before M-thirty.
[SPEAKER_03]: We know the colonies communicate right regularly because they had the Federation, but the Astropath is an Astropath is created by taking a cycle and then lobotomizing them effectively and then they turned into an Astropath.
[SPEAKER_03]: That is a business structure done by the Imperium that they call out came and do existence after the Emperor Unified Terra.
[SPEAKER_03]: So, I like an assume is that, you know, prior to M-thirty, they had some sort of technology that allowed them to communicate through the warp.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's about because they'd have to, because if you tried to build relays around the galaxy, the delays would be incredible.
[SPEAKER_03]: And you'd be looking at, you know,
[SPEAKER_00]: It wouldn't help in weeks, especially militarily, you know, I mean, so.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: What are the bad parts of the Astropaths?
[SPEAKER_00]: You remember the Astropaths are all the people that had psychics, but basically failed.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a pretty big deal.
[SPEAKER_00]: You don't want to fail a test when it's a psychic test given by the Imperial.
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, there's a worse fail.
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, the Astropaths always get to be alive.
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, do you call that alive?
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I think the Astronomic on ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they're, it's quick.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's true.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you have your soul sucked out and fed it into the emperor.
[SPEAKER_00]: It seems, probably, you're gonna not, that's, you're not gonna be able to walk that one off.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm just, I'm sure there's all, and there's also the ones you'll probably use as practice for sisters of silence.
[SPEAKER_00]: I just don't like the idea of that I'm on walking email server.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's fair point.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, fair point.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're also kind of aware of that.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the big, you know what, I'm going on a Brad rant.
[SPEAKER_00]: The appearing, let's everybody be aware of the horrible shit that they do to him.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just making them not aware of it.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's more effective.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just so crazy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Amen.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to completely take away every free will.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to be a walk, a Talboton, but I want to let you know that we're going to make sure that you're still aware of all of that happening.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're like, why?
[SPEAKER_03]: That's not fun for me.
[SPEAKER_03]: That gives me the sadness.
[SPEAKER_03]: With the invention of the Astropath now, they can communicate through the work, which means that, and this is also, by the way, isn't just, like, from one planet to one planet, ships that are in the work can talk out of the work.
[SPEAKER_03]: So this becomes all of a sudden this incredible sea of communication of a travel trade, every new explodes.
[SPEAKER_03]: But another problem arose in the early travel.
[SPEAKER_03]: And that was event horizon.
[SPEAKER_03]: My theory is that the first bunch of ships that went into the warp had no problem.
[SPEAKER_03]: There were no issues whatsoever because all the beings in the warp had never seen a ship.
[SPEAKER_03]: from the material.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so they're basically looking at something and they're like, well, I don't know that is not messing with it.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then one of them went over there and ate some of the people inside of it and went, hey, you guys got to check this out.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's awesome.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they're just cruising buffet's out here.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they're bringing us lunch and just thrown it out there.
[SPEAKER_03]: And the demons of the warp just start descending on these things.
[SPEAKER_03]: We have no records of the time, but I'm pretty convinced.
[SPEAKER_03]: And this is where again, watch event horizon because now that's exactly what was happening to these ships.
[SPEAKER_00]: It has to be crazy for the denizens of the warp because a lot of them, you get to figure they probably don't even know, especially the smaller ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: At this point in time, they might not even know that the material exists.
[SPEAKER_03]: But you probably at this point would have had a blood thirst or fighting with a Lord of change.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then they both looked up at just a ship.
[SPEAKER_03]: with windows on it, going past going.
[SPEAKER_03]: Should we just pause this fight and go see what that's about real quick?
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really know what the hell just happened, but I feel like we're going to go check this out for me too.
[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like that was something that we should do something about.
[SPEAKER_03]: So this is where it gets goofy.
[SPEAKER_03]: Now we're going to get into what humanity I do to protect itself, cough, cough, the Emperor did it all.
[SPEAKER_03]: And that is the Geller Field.
[SPEAKER_03]: Now, what's fun about the Geller Field is that it's invented again around M.A.T.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's pretty quick.
[SPEAKER_03]: We get the warp drive, and then we get the Geller Field, then we get navigators.
[SPEAKER_03]: So that's the actual order, but I did him in this order because the Geller Field's a lot more fun to talk about when you know everything else.
[SPEAKER_03]: So first off, what a Geller Field is.
[SPEAKER_03]: A geeler field is not just a force field generator on a ship.
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, kind of is, but what it really is is it's a force field generator whose battery is a cycle that's been jammed in it and drugged up.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the geeler field is just jacking this guy's life force to power our force field against
[SPEAKER_00]: to get a yellow field.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, a yellow field is a psychic force for that's actually a dream.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's the the cycle is dreaming and that his dream creates a force field bubble in the that is effectively the material, but it projects inside the in material.
[SPEAKER_03]: So anything inside the bubble, nothing from the in material can cross it.
[SPEAKER_03]: So you're effectively bringing the material with you into the material.
[SPEAKER_03]: Now, the issue is that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sorry, I just have, I can't say a laugh at this.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love that most everything's written from, you know, humanities aspect, but man, we are a nightmare.
[SPEAKER_00]: The Imperium of Man, every time we make something, it should be powered by nightmares.
[SPEAKER_03]: Every single time.
[SPEAKER_03]: Without a moment's break.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so this is, again, we're capturing a Cycars.
[SPEAKER_03]: Cycars are new to the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_03]: At this point, fun story.
[SPEAKER_03]: This actually technically predates Cycars.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's the fun part of the gallery field when I was reading this.
[SPEAKER_03]: I was like, well, Cycars, it actually came in M-twenty, too.
[SPEAKER_03]: But now we have it M-A-T.
[SPEAKER_03]: So I can't figure that one out.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's just what it is.
[SPEAKER_03]: But you're capturing psychors shoving them in a machine and then dropping them up and making them dream.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then those dreams do allow them to travel in the work safely.
[SPEAKER_03]: Now, the force field though that they create is dependent on a couple things, namely the power of the cycle, you know, the stronger the cycle of the stronger the gallery field, but also, we don't see you need the bigger the bigger chips, the bigger ships and also the more tumultuousness of the warp.
[SPEAKER_03]: Then what I like about this, the Brad's point about other being a nightmare, they've got little readouts all over the ship showing like what's our current Gellerfield status hatch and they're watching it go up and down.
[SPEAKER_03]: That means the guy in the thing is dying and if it gets low enough, they have to translate as an emergency out of the warp because it will fail.
[SPEAKER_03]: When they do so, they've kind of got to hope that one of two things is going to happen.
[SPEAKER_03]: A, they don't translate out of the warp into a sun, and also B, they translate out of the warp somewhere where they can get another replacement gallery field.
[SPEAKER_03]: Otherwise, we're on for a very long journey.
[SPEAKER_00]: For the most ships have multiple nightmare fields.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, well, they should have backups, but even the other percentage.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, that is one of the one of my favorites, and they did it in a road trader play that game.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's very, very cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: But one of the things that can't, when they try to get in, they want to screw you over is they go and try to kill your navigate and they try to kill your astropath.
[SPEAKER_00]: They try to kill your
[SPEAKER_03]: It'll trap you.
[SPEAKER_03]: So with all that established, let's talk about warp travel itself.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so I wanted to shift here and talk about what the experience of warp travel actually is like in Forty Kay.
[SPEAKER_03]: They do this very well in the Eisenhorn novel.
[SPEAKER_03]: Actually, talk about some of the travel he does.
[SPEAKER_03]: But effectively, warp travel is better.
[SPEAKER_03]: then because you're, as I'm doing a long cryostasis trip, you actually can do it, but it's still long.
[SPEAKER_03]: The warp travel to me is very similar to like sailboat travel in like the, I don't know, like, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen century.
[SPEAKER_03]: And part of this is that, so one of the key things that warp travel is the warp is very similar to the oceans of Earth.
[SPEAKER_03]: Some of them are pretty smooth and reliable, whereas some are bad.
[SPEAKER_03]: So for example, the sargassoc, which is just about the eastern coast of the Atlantic Ocean, is famously smooth.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's actually why there was so much trade out of Europe into the Caribbean.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's because there's a chunk called the sargassoc there that is almost as a hurricane, you can navigate it.
[SPEAKER_03]: So it's also a really great for current that flows there and so on the flip side is Drake's passage, which is the very tip of South America, which is a nightmare field where we decided it was better to drink to dig a giant trench through a country than have to go through that nightmare field.
[SPEAKER_03]: Thanks, Pandora.
[SPEAKER_03]: We appreciate it.
[SPEAKER_03]: The warp is very similar.
[SPEAKER_03]: Some parts of the warp are pretty smooth sailing.
[SPEAKER_03]: You jump in here, you jump out over there.
[SPEAKER_03]: You're pretty reliable.
[SPEAKER_03]: Just like Oceanic travel, we monitor them.
[SPEAKER_03]: Pilots report back, well, they would report back.
[SPEAKER_03]: We see them jump in and then jump out and go, oh, that one only took a week.
[SPEAKER_03]: Other times they jump in and never jump out.
[SPEAKER_03]: And we say, hey, that journey sends six more guys on, but then cross it off.
[SPEAKER_03]: And even the warp storms themselves are recorded because, and they're added to the calculations for all the blind jumps that are occurring.
[SPEAKER_03]: And spoiler from the next cast, ninety-nine percent of jumps are blind jumps.
[SPEAKER_03]: So you guys know what I'm saying.
[SPEAKER_03]: But, a lucky part is that warp travel isn't a linear path.
[SPEAKER_03]: The routes, they have curves and turns.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so you have to kind of like,
[SPEAKER_03]: jump in and then jump out and do all this stuff.
[SPEAKER_03]: But it's still a lot faster than FTL travel.
[SPEAKER_03]: So a lot is an understanding and it's, yeah, bananas faster.
[SPEAKER_03]: But the problem is that because of how dangerous the warp is, we only have, we have a lot of set routes, which means that those routes can get congested.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so that, and if you're going to have that situation, you need someone to manage the congestion.
[SPEAKER_03]: So Forty Cape bureaucracy,
[SPEAKER_03]: The, the, the right guy.
[SPEAKER_00]: We, period of it does that right.
[SPEAKER_00]: bureaucracy.
[SPEAKER_03]: We are the most powerful paperware to ever travel in the Forty First millennia is heavily regulated and heavily limited.
[SPEAKER_03]: And there's two things reason for this.
[SPEAKER_03]: One navigators, astronauts, Geller fields, warp drives, they're not cheap.
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, again, this is not Star Wars.
[SPEAKER_03]: Whereas in Star Wars, we constantly have like, oh, I'm going to translate to warp.
[SPEAKER_03]: You don't have that power.
[SPEAKER_03]: There aren't millennium falcons rolling around.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's just, instead, everything is built, and these are much more expensive, much larger ships.
[SPEAKER_03]: But the bigger, so what you, what you bet, basically, is large transport vessels, ultra-rich, military, et cetera.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's who is going.
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's take a break in this talk about who does warp travel in the forty-first millennium, how it's achieved.
[SPEAKER_03]: Some of them are pretty obvious, space marines.
[SPEAKER_03]: space marines have their own fleets.
[SPEAKER_03]: They have to travel around around.
[SPEAKER_03]: Same with the admeck.
[SPEAKER_03]: The admeck have massive fleets.
[SPEAKER_03]: How they build the fleets.
[SPEAKER_03]: So they're allowed to travel as much as they want.
[SPEAKER_03]: The attack about the fun ships.
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, the attempt is telepathica.
[SPEAKER_03]: These are the great ships.
[SPEAKER_03]: These are the ones who come through and collect all of your psychers and turn less than one percent of them into assassins.
[SPEAKER_03]: And it's worse for everyone else.
[SPEAKER_00]: You forgot the entire ride.
[SPEAKER_00]: You don't want to be the first person.
[SPEAKER_00]: The black ship takes up.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, remember they nightmare you the entire way if you sit there you guys want to listen to that past it it was fun, but yeah, jam you in a box and turn the lights off and turn the music up and not good music, and that's your life until you get to your found destination.
[SPEAKER_03]: Next you have the Adaptive Ministerum this the Ecclesiarchy they again, they're allowed to travel they have their own fleets.
[SPEAKER_03]: The inquisition obviously have their own fleets because they have to move around.
[SPEAKER_03]: Much smaller ones though.
[SPEAKER_03]: Then you get some of the more interesting ones.
[SPEAKER_03]: You have the rogue traders obviously who can travel around.
[SPEAKER_03]: Then you actually get the arvites and the arvites are someone that we're going to probably do a cast on the future because I like the arvites aside for like my own.
[SPEAKER_03]: I think sixty of them now or whatever.
[SPEAKER_03]: So let's build weird armies.
[SPEAKER_03]: The arvites of those don't remember the arvites are the police force.
[SPEAKER_03]: They're allowed to travel around because they're oftentimes sent to a planet where the planetary governor is showing non-compliance.
[SPEAKER_03]: But it hasn't necessarily warranted a full-scale invasion, but the robots have to have a way of getting there.
[SPEAKER_03]: Because otherwise, if they're relying on the planetary travel, that planetary governor would say, yeah, man, I'm a lot of ships.
[SPEAKER_03]: Can't get you guys here this week.
[SPEAKER_03]: But all of those, everything we just listed,
[SPEAKER_03]: is about one percent of the entirety of the bulk of ships.
[SPEAKER_03]: Everything else falls into the imperial navy, the merchant fleets, and then the very small after that are the civilian fleets.
[SPEAKER_00]: I want to add to the civilian fleet, but they believe he considered under the civilian fleet.
[SPEAKER_00]: Larger crime networks have worked travel by the fact that they've taken ships from and or after pathway routes.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, those ones are goofy because the technically the impure him can see them.
[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's always we have the nexus.
[SPEAKER_03]: They're aware of everything.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's my funny thing is, it's like you've got these small, you get a couple of villains in the books that have work travel.
[SPEAKER_00]: But for the most part, the bad guys that the bad guys, they're all bad guys.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: The bad guys that have ships are actually large crime syndicate type things when they have control over a planet's worth of resources kind of thing.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and there's an element where the the Imperium either knows about them.
[SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't care or they're just on the list of murder later.
[SPEAKER_03]: But let's go real quick.
[SPEAKER_03]: The civilian fleet is a term used for people of wealth who want to move around the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_03]: These are private crafts mostly on people of, I've either high standing or power.
[SPEAKER_03]: So you're navigator houses.
[SPEAKER_03]: planetary governors, lords of terror, assorted high-ranking bureaucrats and people like, you wanted the audits.
[SPEAKER_03]: They're going to have their own ships are going to fly in inspection of supplies, et cetera.
[SPEAKER_03]: The next largest one, though, is the Imperial Navy.
[SPEAKER_03]: When I say the next largest, the Imperial Navy is a fraction of the last one we'll talk about here.
[SPEAKER_03]: The Imperial Navy is so big, though.
[SPEAKER_03]: I know, the Imperial Navy is larger than everyone we've talked about up to this point combined.
[SPEAKER_03]: And by a power of power.
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, incredibly large and real quick on the Imperial Navy.
[SPEAKER_03]: This is the spaceship arm of the Imperium.
[SPEAKER_03]: After the events of the Horace Heresy as part of an effort to prevent that ever happening again, the Imperial Army was split up.
[SPEAKER_03]: We've talked about Gillen breaking up the space marine legions, but he also broke these guys up.
[SPEAKER_03]: They did it because the idea was we can have a ground force called now called the Imperial Guard and we'll have a space force now called the Imperial Navy, even though space force would have been a better name.
[SPEAKER_03]: And this way, you can't shut up for billions, because I can either have the sky or I can have the ground.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and have the sky is probably better.
[SPEAKER_03]: Don't get me wrong.
[SPEAKER_03]: You can orbital bombard, but you still can't take land.
[SPEAKER_03]: So eventually you will starve to death.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then standing here if you're on the ground, you can conquer a whole planet.
[SPEAKER_03]: But then we can either orbital bombard you or again just starve you out.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's obviously completely redo that as soon as you came back.
[SPEAKER_03]: But it'll be because he got back and realized, look, you guys took this in a weird direction.
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to defend Bobby G. His ideas were good, but it required a very good bureaucrat to run it.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then he went and got himself stabbed by full grums.
[SPEAKER_03]: So we lost our bureaucrat.
[SPEAKER_03]: And now we got our bureaucrat back.
[SPEAKER_03]: So let's get this going.
[SPEAKER_03]: Now, the imperial navy is, I mean, this is every starship.
[SPEAKER_03]: And I just thought this is all of the battleships, the cruisers, the transports, that's all the imperial navy.
[SPEAKER_03]: And they are a meniscal fraction compared to the merchant fleet.
[SPEAKER_03]: And by the way, next week, we're going to be covering these guys more in depth.
[SPEAKER_03]: But just so you understand, the merchant fleet itself is ninety percent of the entire imperial spacecraft.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, let's throw that real quick.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to talk about more about it.
[SPEAKER_00]: But like the reason one of the reasons this is because we specialize worlds.
[SPEAKER_00]: We said, hey, these guys make hubcaps and you're like, hey, is there any vegetation on the entire world?
[SPEAKER_00]: You're like, that seems dumb.
[SPEAKER_00]: I said hubcaps.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they're like, we'll send you food and we have to send everything to certain planets.
[SPEAKER_00]: And we do that over again, the Imperium of Man is a million planet strong.
[SPEAKER_00]: And all of these are transporting goods and everything, two, all of these just so they survive.
[SPEAKER_00]: So this is a gigantic amount of ships.
[SPEAKER_03]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_03]: The imperonavy moving around, these civilian fleet, space marine, ad mech, all of this.
[SPEAKER_03]: Someone has to watch all of this.
[SPEAKER_03]: And we learned about this in a book.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's called The Nexus Axiomatic.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's back on terror.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's a, yeah, this is this.
[SPEAKER_03]: Normally, I wouldn't ruin a book guys on this one, but this is actually a small portion inside of another book.
[SPEAKER_03]: So I don't feel as bad doing this.
[SPEAKER_03]: So there's a book came out in two thousand nineteen called vaults of terror.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's about an inquisitor hunting down a, what he believes to be a, like what you're calling it.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's just a spine.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's a spine.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's already a spine.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a point.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's a point.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's a point.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's a point.
[SPEAKER_03]: really cool and while the inquisitor's hunting down, he encounters something called the nexus axiomatic.
[SPEAKER_03]: The nexus axiomatic, which I'm going to start calling nexus, because it makes my life a lot easier, is not a secret cabal.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's just an incredibly well kept secret within
[SPEAKER_03]: Tara.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, I think you're doing it in justice to say incredibly.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is a secret that was kept for how many years?
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's I'm more than three.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but it's also one of these things.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's kind of near the golden thrones or how do you get access to it.
[SPEAKER_03]: When we say secret, there's a lot of secrets in forty games.
[SPEAKER_03]: This one's more like good luck getting there.
[SPEAKER_03]: You have to get through a lot of crap.
[SPEAKER_03]: But this guy did and we get a little bit of description.
[SPEAKER_03]: So
[SPEAKER_03]: The next is this ancient structure, but it's kind of cool because when inside of it, you've got information, you've got images, you've got structures that all date back to the age of technology.
[SPEAKER_03]: And you don't know from the writing, if this is something where
[SPEAKER_03]: this building actually predates it.
[SPEAKER_03]: But there was a Nexus built in like M-fifteen or did the emperor find all these pieces and then jam them in the Nexus during his unification.
[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is effectively air traffic control.
[SPEAKER_03]: or the war?
[SPEAKER_03]: Or the galaxy, yeah, quadrillions of ships.
[SPEAKER_03]: This is the place where the ID code of every single ship is stored in check.
[SPEAKER_03]: So in the phrase, it's an old code, sir, but it checks out, and that would have gone through the nexus.
[SPEAKER_03]: Within the nexus, though.
[SPEAKER_00]: Pump the brakes, John.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's tell everyone, as with all things in Perium,
[SPEAKER_00]: This place is a nightmare.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is a horseshoe.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: So the Imperium doesn't use AI.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so they have to be able to collate track this much data.
[SPEAKER_03]: No regular human could do it.
[SPEAKER_03]: So they have something else.
[SPEAKER_03]: We don't know what these things really are.
[SPEAKER_03]: All we know is that there are these giant liquid vats.
[SPEAKER_03]: And inside of them is a living being with a bunch of tubes and electronics plugged into it.
[SPEAKER_00]: like you said living being because saying human would be question.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, from a description, you can't tell that this used to be a human and it's mutated or is this something that was created for this, is it an ab human that was created for this?
[SPEAKER_00]: Is that guy been in there for twenty thousand years?
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you don't know.
[SPEAKER_03]: We don't know.
[SPEAKER_03]: All we know is that they are in there and all of the data of the entire universe is flowing through them.
[SPEAKER_03]: Every space marine fleet, every inquisition fleet, the black ships, everything.
[SPEAKER_03]: The nexus could pinpoint the exact location of every inquisitorial agent, every gray night ship, everything in the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_03]: So by the Brad thing earlier, but the crime syndicates.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they can find every single one of them.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's just a matter of, do they bother?
[SPEAKER_03]: Because there's other crap going on.
[SPEAKER_03]: One of my favorite parts of the book, though, when we talk about the history, is there are four pictures inside the nexus.
[SPEAKER_03]: And they kind of hint towards the origin of space to our mankind.
[SPEAKER_03]: So the first two have a cloaked figure in it.
[SPEAKER_03]: You can't see his face, but it's clear to the same figure.
[SPEAKER_03]: And the first one is the figure standing in front of the first ever warp engine.
[SPEAKER_03]: And the second one is the figure standing in front of the first ever Geller field.
[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's Melcador.
[SPEAKER_03]: Personally, I don't get to the emperor.
[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's Melcador, but you can't see it.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just one of the two.
[SPEAKER_00]: How about this for sure?
[SPEAKER_00]: I actually took it as the emperor, but I could see Melcador also.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I just think it's Melcode.
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't see the emperor posing in front of it.
[SPEAKER_03]: I could see the emperor's one taking the photo.
[SPEAKER_03]: All right, stand there.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, stand there for scale.
[SPEAKER_03]: Someone's got to see with this crap.
[SPEAKER_03]: The third one, though, is the original designs of the Golden Throne.
[SPEAKER_03]: Mr. Picture of the actually the Blue Prince.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a big deal, though, because the Golden Throne then it shows the Golden Throne leaking to the galaxy, though.
[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't just the Golden Throne on Terra.
[SPEAKER_03]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, it's supposed to be the whole, because, remember, with the web way project, the plan was to build this throne.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's going to give me, I'm going to link every system, every planet back to me, but also I'm going to link back into them.
[SPEAKER_03]: I believe the Golden Pearl is meant to originally be a multi-way communication to where he could just sit on it and rule the galaxy forever.
[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you very much.
[SPEAKER_00]: On that, because he had instantaneous communication and travel to everywhere in his empire.
[SPEAKER_03]: Now the fourth one is the one people who've read the book have a lot more debate around.
[SPEAKER_03]: The fourth one is a curled up fetus inside of that with a flame logo on its head.
[SPEAKER_03]: And some people think it's magnets.
[SPEAKER_03]: Other people think it's an early cycle.
[SPEAKER_03]: There's a ton of ideas of what this could have been.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's been so much fan theory on this.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_03]: And no one knows what it's because it's not that well described because the truth is the flame logo sounds cool, but I'm far as I know there's no flame logo on magnets.
[SPEAKER_03]: He's got red hair.
[SPEAKER_03]: So we don't know what they are.
[SPEAKER_03]: But to me, what this implies is that the Nexus is one of the most important structures in the empiric.
[SPEAKER_03]: The Emperor hid this thing away, hard with a lot of his most vital projects.
[SPEAKER_03]: I would assume that Nexus was at least at some point close to the Primark project.
[SPEAKER_03]: I think a lot of the stuff he did was all built in one area, and now he's moved them around to keep him safe from crying eyes.
[SPEAKER_03]: And funny story on prying eyes, by the way, one of those prying eyes is the inquisition.
[SPEAKER_03]: Who, except for this one inquisitor, were not aware of this thing existed.
[SPEAKER_03]: And I am sure they would love nothing more than the gain access to where every ship and the galaxy is.
[SPEAKER_03]: That would be fun for them.
[SPEAKER_03]: Also the space marines would probably try to destroy it.
[SPEAKER_03]: The lords of terror would destroy it.
[SPEAKER_03]: The ad mech, the ad mech would just, they'd make it bigger.
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, they would try to relocate it.
[SPEAKER_00]: It moved as the Mars.
[SPEAKER_00]: I also of the fact that the upper in my mind is kept all these like Dr. Evil later someplace.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but all times.
[SPEAKER_03]: But one of the really cool things with the nexus though is getting much the great mystery of it is what it tracks.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so when we talk about work travel, the imperial tracks that the distance between points to map out more efficient travel.
[SPEAKER_03]: And these small changes can have really big effects.
[SPEAKER_03]: And since work travels one of the most critical elements, having a safe and reliable passage is paramount.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so one of the stories I like about this is that this is eighth edition codex is how wild work travel is.
[SPEAKER_03]: You have a high world called Prox and a mining world called Hedithason.
[SPEAKER_03]: tens of thousands of ships make this journey.
[SPEAKER_00]: Somebody make it every single day the same.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, really.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's probably multiple times a day.
[SPEAKER_03]: And these two planets are separated by twelve light years.
[SPEAKER_03]: All right.
[SPEAKER_03]: The average journey takes one to six weeks.
[SPEAKER_03]: So the average is even that type.
[SPEAKER_03]: There have been a couple ships that took twelve hundred years.
[SPEAKER_03]: And another, the couple have taken five minutes.
[SPEAKER_03]: But my favorite part is that twenty-two percent of the ships that have done the journey have yet to arrive.
[SPEAKER_03]: So that's the answer.
[SPEAKER_03]: I use like this one of the most travel routes in the entire Imperium still has that much variability to it.
[SPEAKER_03]: Now, for we close out this cast because we're going to set this up for the next one.
[SPEAKER_03]: We talk about the work, travel and all these things.
[SPEAKER_03]: There's one more piece that's important.
[SPEAKER_03]: The Imperium itself is segmented into segmentums.
[SPEAKER_03]: Sorry, GW does this stuff.
[SPEAKER_03]: It breaks the galaxy into five parts.
[SPEAKER_03]: because the galaxy is huge.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so you actually don't travel all the way across the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_03]: You tend to travel and do almost everything within your segment.
[SPEAKER_03]: And this is just more of a logistics and everything I'll stand point.
[SPEAKER_03]: Some ships obviously black ships that go all the way across the galaxy, but like ninety nine percent plus percent of the galaxy stays within its segments.
[SPEAKER_03]: This is also where stuff like the death watch have separated throughout the galaxy, even space marine fleets will not, they'll collect their home, but they'll tend to set up.
[SPEAKER_00]: They stay in our segment almost all the time.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's big deal because it's messaging.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's travel one.
[SPEAKER_00]: They figured out that if you stay within your segment most of the time, you can travel faster within those segments.
[SPEAKER_00]: They follow the basically the pathways through the warp in these particular ways, go quickly.
[SPEAKER_00]: But it's also the fact that you have to send messages.
[SPEAKER_00]: You have to communicate and it takes time.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you can't have your forces on one side of the galaxy and the other side and hope to
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, if you're out all at like cow space, you can't be relaying your message all the back to soul.
[SPEAKER_03]: It will just take too long.
[SPEAKER_03]: So it goes more segmented.
[SPEAKER_03]: The other thing too is also response sounds like we just said this to a twelve-light your journey could be five minutes.
[SPEAKER_03]: It could be five hundred years.
[SPEAKER_03]: So the closer you are to the area, the better.
[SPEAKER_03]: Everything tends to structure themselves out that way.
[SPEAKER_03]: So much so that we'll cover some more in the next cast the merchant fleet.
[SPEAKER_03]: Actually, only is approved to operate and it's a science segment for sure.
[SPEAKER_03]: It moves outside of it is completely separate.
[SPEAKER_00]: And we are kind of crazy about that, too.
[SPEAKER_00]: If one of those merchant ships goes outside of the segment, you can just get blown up because they just assume you're an owl.
[SPEAKER_03]: But let's talk about the segments real quick, just because I wanted to make sure we call them out of form.
[SPEAKER_03]: So not all are equal.
[SPEAKER_03]: So some like soul are very well developed and very well defended and others like Ultima are a bit more wild west.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just because there's two segmentas that have ninety percent of all of the conflicts in the galaxy right now.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, what?
[SPEAKER_03]: Where's the problem?
[SPEAKER_03]: So real quick hitter here.
[SPEAKER_03]: Soul system to made one geographically.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's a smallest, but it's the highest density of colonized planets.
[SPEAKER_03]: And it's just like center left in the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's where the soul system sits.
[SPEAKER_03]: And then next to them, the left of Saul, you have the segment and pacificus.
[SPEAKER_03]: This is the home of Colchis, which is the word bears, and teneth the former those ghosts.
[SPEAKER_03]: Pacificus is one of those areas that now there's been some tyrannic activity there, but for the most part it was marked, it would appear in a novel as a world in a thing, but it was never much in the codexes.
[SPEAKER_03]: Then you have segmentum obscurus, which is just above soul, that's where the eye of terror is.
[SPEAKER_03]: segmentum obscurus, that one's a bit more critical.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's also Callivan, obviously, Bolial, Vigilus, Medusa, a lot of the primarcs ended up in obscurus.
[SPEAKER_03]: Obscurus kind of sucks.
[SPEAKER_03]: But Obscurus is very heavy part of a forticated lore.
[SPEAKER_03]: Underneath Sol, you have the segmentum tempestus.
[SPEAKER_03]: When you say underneath, you say to the south, I mean, look at Sol and then look down and then you'll see Obscurus.
[SPEAKER_03]: And obscure is where Erborris is, if on Creeg, a few others, but the main thing about obscure is that they've been like chaos encursion down there, randomly.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's more of obscure is as known for.
[SPEAKER_03]: But the real party is the ultimate segment.
[SPEAKER_03]: Ultimate segmentum is to the right of soul.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's two to three times the size of every other segment.
[SPEAKER_03]: It might be five times the size of soul.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's a trash fire.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is where you don't move.
[SPEAKER_00]: The property values are really crappy right there.
[SPEAKER_03]: It is yet, ultimate segmentum is the worst part of the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_03]: So you've got, this is where the orcs basically come from, the tower there, not that big of a deal, but you know, whatever.
[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, you also have like, cough, you've got, believe the ghoul stars are out there.
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, everything bashing at the galaxy is one of the other.
[SPEAKER_00]: What are the tearned fleets?
[SPEAKER_03]: one like five.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_03]: This is the worst part of the galaxy, but it's the largest.
[SPEAKER_03]: And so what we're going to discuss next time is a bit more of the merchant and some of those things.
[SPEAKER_03]: So that's where you make the most money because, you know, being a merchant in Seoul isn't that hard.
[SPEAKER_03]: It's, you know, it's paid, but fine.
[SPEAKER_03]: If you want to go out there and you want to like see with road traders, you want to go out into the ultimate segmentum.
[SPEAKER_03]: That's where that's where you can make your fortune.
[SPEAKER_00]: I just want to imagine if it's baby.
[SPEAKER_03]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_03]: Also murder murder murder death.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, well, let's start.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's keep with the cash money judgments.
[SPEAKER_00]: Don't look at that bad side here.
[SPEAKER_03]: But think let's break there because next week we're going to dive into a bit more of the function in life of space travel.
[SPEAKER_03]: We do the merchant fleets, naval fleets, the void borne, some of the actual vessels themselves, a bunch of this stuff because this is things that I want to cover because it comes about when you're reading the game.
[SPEAKER_03]: You're whatever you're novel or you're playing rogue trader or you're playing some of your things comes up a time.
[SPEAKER_00]: I like talking about this after I played a road trader and I have to actually with back to road trader a couple times.
[SPEAKER_03]: So this is where I think the next cast we're talking a bit more of just the logistics and business behind a lot of this stuff.
[SPEAKER_03]: So we hope you guys like this cast.
[SPEAKER_03]: I did if you didn't.
[SPEAKER_03]: Sorry, there's more stuff coming that you will like, but until next week, this has been John Barsati and Brad Jester.
